- So it's week two of the show,
and my mom has flown across the country
from Virginia to watch tonight's show,
and to help us out behind the scenes,
setting up and selling tickets.
I think this is the second,
second time, is that accurate?
(beeping)
Okay, so this is the third that my mom has come to visit.
My dad has come the other times,
but he just started a new job,
so he couldn't come out, but my mom,
it was very generous.
- I had thought about coming this summer anyway,
to visit you.
Then when I found out about the show,
I thought, oh, that's when I wanna go.
I wanna make sure I'm there on at least one Friday night.
- I tried to tell her the show is not that much different
than videos you've already seen of me on Instagram.
I'm very glad to have you here,
but don't feel any obligation, whatsoever, to come,
but you know how moms are.
- And so I'm gonna be there
for two Friday nights, two shows.
(upbeat music)
- So we're backstage in the other space
where I'm performing my show.
My show, obviously, is a one man show.
For shows that have a lot of people,
I feel like this area would get very crowded very fast.
But for one person, it's totally adequate.
We have a bunch of hooks here,
presumably for our costume changes.
We have a table, a mirror,
for doing your makeup and stuff.
I don't have any makeup, but it's good to know
that we got a mirror here,
so I can check my hair before walking on stage.
I will do that.
I could walk onto the stage right here.
I could walk onto the stage from this space.
(upbeat music)
This looks like this is the real place
where costume changes would happen.
Got a bunch of mirrors,
there's a ton of costume kind of pieces over here.
So presumably during shows, in between scenes,
people are running up that tiny spiral staircase,
switching out costumes, checking their makeup,
checking the hair, putting back down,
and walking onto stage.
All right, so if we keep walking
through this costume room,
we end up on the balcony that overlooks the theater itself.
Got the stage right there,
the audience will be sitting here.
(upbeat music)
Yeah, so these are the Craigslist posters that we got,
that we are covering with my Halloween costume posters.
(upbeat music)
Last week, right before the show
was when I realized that I didn't have the IHOP costume,
so I got it this week.
- [Mom] Are we gonna measure, so we make sure it's even?
- [Josh] It's one cellphone length.
So this is my cellphone, is the measuring device.
- [Mom] Okay.
(upbeat music)
- Yeah, I don't know.
Like what is this movie?
Is it some kind of stand up movie?
Last week, we had a little more time,
and so we covered the back of the posters with paper.
This one, we'll clearly have to angle this,
so the easel is facing away from where people are walking.
I feel like it's a little off brand,
a little unrelated, to We Should Hang Out Sometime,
and my Halloween costumes.
(upbeat music)
I'll show you, there's actually
kind of a backstage hallway on this side.
But back here is kind of where storage happens.
Not a lot of storage space here,
but as you come through, you'll see,
this is a theater.
This is where props and such happen
for long term shows that are here,
but you can see they're super organized.
Sometimes, a backstage area like this,
like a prop area, it's just disaster,
and this wraps around, basically,
the back of the seats.
So we just walked around the back of the seats,
and we're coming full circle to the front door,
the entrance and the exit,
or it can curve back into the theater this way.
(upbeat music)
This looks to me like the kind of movie
that we would not have been allowed to watch as children.
- Well, you could watch PG movies when you turned 12.
- No. - Yes.
- No, no.
Only Star Wars.
We weren't allowed to watch PG movies.
I feel like there was never,
it was never clear if we were allowed to watch them.
- Hmm.
I don't think so.
I think you could watch more PG movies.
- Well, if that was the case,
I would've kept watching.
(upbeat music)
This week is different than last week.
Last week, we had the whole theater complex to ourselves.
This week, there's another production
going on in The Main Stage,
which is the theater right there,
which means that we will be sharing this courtyard space,
and keep everything that we have,
which is a lot of stuff,
all kind of compressed in here.
(upbeat music)
Yeah, good thing you've been doing
those high intensity interval trainings.
She goes to the gym every morning, at like 6:00 AM,
and pays to do that.
Tonight, it's free.
It's a free workout.
Its' a great deal.
(upbeat music)
- I'm pretty excited about seeing Joshua
do stand up comedy.
This'll be my first time seeing this.
I have seen him tell jokes,
and funny stores in his speeches,
but never comedy like this.
I know he's been working really hard
and practicing for a year,
so I'm excited to see it.
- [Josh] George.
- Hey, guys.
- [Josh] How's it going?
So I know we have another show this week, right?
- There's gonna be a lot of people out here,
so I wouldn't use these.
There's gonna be at least a hundred people down here.
- Yeah.
- I put those around.
It's just gonna, limit a lot of space.
Now you can use one or two of them,
but I would suggest, put most of them against the fence.
You know, I can give you something to hang them with.
We need you to think of the safety first.
- Okay.
(upbeat music)
My original concept for decorating the courtyard
was actually, I was gonna get a 25 foot long,
by eight foot high banner
of all my costumes, so it'll just create a solid wall here,
but I talked to a couple of people about the idea,
and the consensus seemed to be,
Josh, your idea is not good.
You're not good at decorating.
That looks awesome, George.
Thank you so much.
That's a really cool look.
What do you think, babe?
- George.
What are we, at the Louvre now?
- Hmm.
Good thing they're very cheap plastic,
instead of real glass.
(upbeat music)
(audience applauding)
Last year, I got asked to audition
for America's Got Talent.
Wait, did someone just laugh at that?
They're like, no, that would never work.
Oh man.
(audience laughing)
Wait, tell me the name of the fungus again,
because to be honest,
it actually sounds like a piece of Ikea furniture.
(audience laughing)
I don't know her.
Like any of you can actually make suggestions.
(audience laughing)
She's not a character in my show.
(audience laughing)
- Well, I thought it was really great.
Joshua's funny, and I know that he had practiced
a lot of things, but also, with comedy,
I think people are maybe expecting some spontaneity,
and so he was able to do spontaneous things
from what happened with interacting with the audience, too.
- How do you guys feel about puns?
Where are you on the pun scale.
(audience cheering and applauding)
Okay, good, cool.
Thank you, thank you for that.
This is a very nerdy crowd.
I can tell tonight.
(audience laughing)
- When I sat down, the lady next to me said,
"Oh, why did you come to this show?"
And I said, "Oh, I came to see Joshua,"
and she said, "Oh, how do you know him?"
'Cause she knew I was from Virginia.
I said, "He's my son."
She said, "Oh, wow, this'll be fun."
(audience applauding)
(upbeat music)
- All right, so we've just finished the second show.
We decided that the mannequins are too big,
and impossible to take back and forth
to our house every week,
and there's not space to store them here,
so we are going to have to throw away the mannequins.
It's very sad.
(upbeat music)
- Wow.
It's the second show,
and it was a sold out show.
We were kind of shocked.
I even had to tell a friend that it was sold out,
and they probably wouldn't be able to see it.
I feel like this week, it just flew by.
All of a sudden, we were toward the end,
and I was like, whoa.
That really flew by this time.
