Thousands Of Google Employees Protest Trump Order; Top Tech Companies To Join Legal Action

The US tech industry "resistance" to Trump is growing louder, and on Tuesday a group

of top technology companies including Google, AirBnB and Netflix, plan to meet on Tuesday

to discuss filing an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit challenging President Trump's

order restricting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, said a spokesperson for a company

organizing the gathering cited by Reuters.

The meeting is being called together by GitHub, which makes software development tools.

For those unfamiliar, amicus, or "friend of the court", briefs are filed by parties who

are not litigants in a case but want to offer arguments or information to the judge.

In other words, tech companies do not want to burn all bridges with the president, but

they don't want to lose their liberal clients either by being perceived as doing nothing,

something which impacted Uber adversely over the weekend, leading to the #DeleteUber social

media meme.

As Reuters adds, some of the companis invited to the meeting are Alphabet's Google, Airbnb

and Netflix.

As reported yesterday, the technology sector has become the clearest corporate opponent

to the ban announced last week, however not due to a genuinely altruistic reason, but

because Trump's crackdown on H1-B visas threatens to cutoff a key labor supply.

The industry depends on talent from around the world, and companies have been considering

the best way to muster their resources, with efforts so far including statements condemning

the move and financial support for organizations backing immigrants, such as the American Civil

Liberties Union.

According to Michal Rosenn, general counsel for fundraising company Kickstarter, which

will be involved in a filing, the "effort" - which at places like Bloomberg has already

been dubbed the "resistance" - began on Monday.

"We're all very shaken.

We're shaken to see our neighbors and our families and our friends targeted in this

way," Rosenn said.

"All of us are trying to think about what we can do."

The discussions among the tech companies come after Amazon.com and Expedia filed declarations

in court on Monday supporting a lawsuit filed by the Washington state attorney general.

Amazon and Expedia said Trump's order adversely impacts their business.

A separate lawsuit challenging Trump's order as unconstitutional was filed on Monday by

the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Additionally, Microsoft said it would aid the Washington AG lawsuit against the Trump

executive order.

If the tech companies decide to file an amicus brief as a group, it is unclear which case

they would weigh in on.

Other companies invited to meet, according to Reuters, include Adobe Systems Inc, AdRoll,

Automattic Inc, Box Inc, Cloudera Inc, Cloudflare Inc, Docusign, Dropbox, Etsy Inc, Evernote

Corp, Glu Mobile Inc, Lithium, Medium, Mozilla, Pinterest, reddit, Salesforce.com Inc, SpaceX,

Stripe, Twilio, Yelp Inc, and Zynga Inc, the source said.

Meanwhile, as Bloomberg adds, thousands of Google employees staged protests on Monday

over Trump's executive order on immigration.

More than two thousand employees of Google parent Alphabet Inc. participated across several

offices.

At Google's Mountain View, California, headquarters, Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai and

co-Founder Sergey Brin -- both immigrants -- spoke to the crowd, voicing concerns over

Trump's order that limits travel to the U.S. from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Many tech companies criticized the order, which was signed late Friday.

Pichai sent a note to Google staff that day, saying 187 employees were potentially affected.

Google asked those employees overseas to return immediately, pledging to help with the logistics

and handle the costs.

Pichai told the assembled employees on Monday that the issue is "at the core of the founding

of this company," according to a Google employee there.

"We spent two hours this morning talking about all of this.

There is large work that remains to be done."

Brin talked about his refugee past.

Part of a Russian Jewish family, he emigrated to the U.S. because of anti-Semitism in that

country.

Some of the Google employees affected by the immigration order also addressed the crowd.

Soufi Esmaeilzadeh, a Google product manager, was one of them.

An Iranian-born Canadian who has lived in the U.S. for 15 years, she was preparing to

travel from Switzerland to the U.S. when news of the coming executive order first arrived.

Edmonia Lewis: Google Doodle salutes pioneering sculptor to kick off Black History Month - Duration: 7:38.

TO KICK OFF its celebration of Black History Month, Google turns today to a 19th century artist who burned so bright that her twin gifts of blazing talent and steely determination could not be denied even in the face of her era's discrimination.

Time and again, sculptor Edmonia Lewis — nicknamed "Wildfire" — faced obstacles and setbacks, yet she persevered as if her greatness were already cast. Lewis was orphaned at age 9, when she was adopted by maternal aunts and joined their Mississauga tribe.

She endured bitter racial bias at Oberlin College, which she began attending at age 15; she was falsely accused of poisoning classmates and was beaten, and was ultimately denied the chance to graduate.

She then was refused apprenticeships in Civil War-era Boston, until she encountered the well-connected sculptor Edward Brackett, whose clients included well-known abolitionists.

And she would then run a small art studio in Rome (a space formerly used by neoclassicist Antonio Canova), eschewing assistants because she was often without the means of fellow expat artists in Italy.

Yet she would shine as the first woman of American Indian and African American descent to discover international renown in the arts. [Winning Google Doodle invoking Black Lives Matter was designed by a high school sophomore]

Today's Google Doodle, by artist Sophie Diao, salutes Lewis and her great work "The Death of Cleopatra," which rests today in Washington at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. (Her work "Forever Free" resides nearby, with the Howard University Gallery of Art.) And the ribboned "Google" wording shines bright, befitting Lewis's nickname.

Lewis is also freshly represented in Google's "Arts & Culture" section, which spotlights some of her most iconic marble works, including "Anna Quincy Waterston," "Old Arrow Maker," "Poor Cupid" and "Young Octavian," as well as sculptures inspired by the words of Longfellow, whom she met in Rome.

[Google Doodle honors Fred Korematsu, who fought president's executive order on Japanese internment] Mary Edmonia Lewis was born near Greenbush, New York, circa 1844, and died in 1907.

Her great "Death of Cleopatra," carved in 1876, was believed lost to history till more than a century later, when it resurfaced like a Phoenix, fittingly rediscovered by a fire inspector. It was donated to the Smithsonian in 1994.

How to Organize Your Business Files Using Google Drive - Duration: 7:40.

- In this video, I'm gonna show you the best way to organize

all of your digital business files.

Hey, everyone.

Megan here from meganminns.com,

where I help busy entrepreneurs like you

save time while running their business.

As business owners, it can be very easy

to let all of your digital and electronic files pile up.

But by taking a few minutes to set up

a filing structure that works for you,

it will not only be easy to maintain,

but you'll know where to find everything

the moment you need it.

So let's get started.

I use Google Drive to store and organize all of my files.

And if you haven't signed up for Google Drive yet,

I do have a link below this video

that you can go ahead and sign up right now.

You get 15 gigabytes for free to start off,

if you sign up for the Google Apps for Work,

which is now called G Suite.

You can actually get unlimited storage,

which is what I have, and you can see I definitely need it.

In my Google Drive, I have five folders.

Archived, which is where I store outdated files

and folders that are no longer relevant.

Education, which is where I save e-books, PDFs,

and any resources that I am using

to continue to learn and educate myself.

Megan Minns, this is my home base for my business files,

so I'll dig a little bit more into this in a minute.

Personal, which is where I store all of my personal files.

And Website in a Box.

Now, Website in a Box has its own folder

because it is a separate co-created product

between Mariah Coz and I,

so that's why it's not underneath my business folder.

Since we're going to be talking

about how to organize your business files,

I'm gonna focus on this business folder.

So, if we open it up you can see

that I have six folders within here

and I have found that this arrangement works really well.

I actually got the foundation for this structure

from a blog post from a friend of mine named Maya Elias

so I'll link to her original blog post beneath this video

so you can check it out

and you'll also see how I have customized it

and modified it to work for me.

So the first folder is called Brand Elements,

then we have Content and Products,

Finances and Accounting, Internal Communication,

Legal Documents, and Miscellaneous.

So, if you open up the Brand Elements folder

you'll see that I have all the different

types of brand elements you might need,

whether that's b-roll, so background video,

background footage for videos, my bio,

my business cards, fonts, headshots,

intro videos, music, styled stock photos,

photos for my website and all that good stuff.

This is really helpful because I'm not only

keeping files organized, but when I added a VA

and a video editor to my team

it was so easy to share the exact brand elements

that they needed to use to help me run my business,

plus it's so nice to always know where these things are.

The Content and Products folder

is definitely the biggest folder

and this is every type of content or product

that might exist in my business,

so that can go from affiliate promotions

to challenges or courses, e-books, free downloads I offer,

my newsletter, any random tech tutorials,

webinars, and, of course, my YouTube videos

so whatever kind of content

and products that you're creating in your business,

it would be great to go ahead

and create a folder for each of them

and some of these folders, just as a little tip,

are actually empty, but they're great reminders for me

that I want to do these things

so I don't have an e-book or an email course yet,

but I want to so just by having the folder there,

it really motivates me and reminds me

that this is something I do want to create for my business.

Next is the Finances and Accounting folder.

I am actually not going to go into that in detail,

but you can see at a high level that I have

a place for budget, invoices, goals, income trackers,

and receipts, so whatever kind of financial

and accounting documentation you need for your business,

go ahead and give it its own folder.

Again, this is also great to keep separate

because when you do start to grow a team,

there's gonna be certain folders you want to share

with your team and other folders that you won't,

so it kinda helps keep the separation there.

Internal Communication, for me this means anything

that's just about the actual team

and things that the team needs,

but don't really see the light of day

outside of our business.

So maybe this is some strategy,

customer service templates, goals and planning,

meeting notes, interviews, operations is a general folder

that I share with my virtual assistant

so we can share processes and time sheets

and all that good stuff,

so internal communication will continue to grow

as I expand my team and get better

about documenting things that we do as a team.

Now, Legal Documents.

This is where I store all of my templates,

so any legal templates I have

as well as signed contracts,

any licenses and website policies.

So, again, highly recommend that you have

a legal documents folder.

It just really helps things stay where they need to be

and you know where to find the important stuff

when you need it.

Now, the Miscellaneous folder is kind of a catch all

so when I was rebranding, I had a folder for it in here

where I kept all of that, you know, the questionnaire,

inspiration, I could actually probably go ahead

and archive this now that I have rebranded,

but for now it's still sitting in Miscellaneous.

Research and inspiration is a big catch all folder

for all those screen grabs that I capture

when I see an inspiring sales page

or a great thank you page

or I love how someone did a welcome sequence.

I'll capture all of that inspiration

and store it all here

so I can always go back and see it

and I don't have to dig around in my computer.

Then I recently added this catch all folder called To File.

This is not an ideal system,

but if you want to just be realistic,

sometimes you need to go ahead and upload things

to Google Drive so they're off your computer,

but maybe you don't have time

to necessarily organize them

so I created this little catch all To File folder

that is just at temporary placeholder

when I want to go ahead and backup something,

but I don't have time to actually go ahead and organize it.

So, hopefully this'll be something I eliminate

but for now it's there and it does work to ensure

that everything is still backed up.

So, that is the inside of my business folder.

I have found this structure to be really successful.

I have used it on a team of one

up to a team of six or more

and it's very, very effective,

easy to use, easy to stay organized,

and something that I hope you

will implement in your business.

Now you know how to organize your files,

but I understand if you didn't have a few minutes

to work through this alongside me,

so that's why I created a free file organizing cheat sheet

when you do have a few minutes to tackle this project.

Enhance! Super Resolution From Google | Two Minute Papers - Duration: 4:19.

Dear Fellow Scholars, this is Two Minute Papers with Károly Zsolnai-Fehér.

What is super resolution?

Super resolution is process where our input is a coarse, low resolution image, and the

output is the same image, but now with more details and in high resolution.

We'll also refer to this process as image upscaling.

And in this piece of work, we are interested in performing single image super resolution,

which means that no additional data is presented to the algorithm that could help the process.

Despite the incredible results seen in practically any of the crime solving television shows

out there, our intuition would perhaps say that this problem, for the first sight, sounds

impossible.

How could one mathematically fill in the details when these details are completely unknown?

Well, that's only kind of true.

Let's not confuse super resolution with image inpainting, where we essentially cut an entire

part out of an image and try to replace it leaning on our knowledge of the surroundings

of the missing part.

That's a different problem.

Here, the entirety of the image is known, and the details require some enhancing.

This particular method is not based on neural networks, but is still a learning-based technique.

The cool thing here, is that we can use a training dataset, that is, for all intents

and purposes, arbitrarily large.

We can just grab a high resolution image, convert it to a lower resolution and we immediately

have our hands on a training example for the learning algorithm.

These would be the before and after images, if you will.

And here, during learning, the image is subdivided into small image patches, and buckets are

created to aggregate the information between patches that share similar features.

These features include brightness, textures, and the orientation of the edges.

The technique looks at how the small and large resolution images relate to each other when

viewed through the lens of these features.

Two remarkably interesting things arose from this experiment:

- one, it outperforms existing neural network-based techniques,

- two, it only uses 10 thousand images, and one hour of training time, which is in the

world of deep neural networks, is so little, it's completely unheard of.

Insanity.

Really, really well done.

Some tricks are involved to keep the memory consumption low, the paper discusses how it

is done, and there are also plenty of other details within, make sure to have a look,

as always, it is linked in the video description.

It can either be run directly on the low resolution image, or alternatively we can first run a

cheap and naive decade-old upscaling algorithm, and run this technique on this upscaled output

to improve it.

Note that super resolution is a remarkably competitive field of research, there are hundreds

and hundreds of papers appearing on this every year, and almost every single one of them

seems to be miles ahead of the previous ones.

Where in reality, the truth is that most of these methods have different weaknesses and

strengths, and so far I haven't seen any technique that would be viable for universal use.

To make sure that a large number of cases is covered, the authors posted a sizeable

supplementary document with comparisons.

This gives so much more credence to the results.

I am hoping to see a more widespread adoption of this in future papers in this area.

For now, when viewing websites, I feel that we are close to the point where we could choose

to transmit only the lower resolution images through the network and perform super resolution

on them locally on our phones and computers.

This will lead to significant savings on network bandwidth.

select your business name when it popped

up if you don't find it means that it

isn't listed and you'll have to add your

business at this point number two when

you enter your business information go

over it carefully be sure that there are

address or phone number number three the

final step is the verification process

don't forget it this is when your Center

code which will have to enter in order

to verify that you are the current owner

of the business

what if you find that your business has

been claimed by another owner take these

steps number one first be sure that you

haven't already claimed the business

using a different email address once

you checked with all your email

addresses you can move on or just

glanced at the listing the phone number

listed should tell you right away

whether you're the one who claims it

number two if someone else has claimed

your listing click report a problem

you'll have the option of including a

message to the person currently claiming

the business you should tell them who

you are and that you are the business

owner and that you need to have them

relinquish ownership to you

number three allow seven full days for a

response

it's a full week passes without your

message being acknowledged contact

support google by replying to the confirmation

message that you have received

How to Charcoal Grill Steaks // Grill Steaks - Duration: 1:14.

Ingredients USDA Prime or Choice Steaks - e.g. boneless strips Olive oil Salt Pepper

Set the steak out of the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature. Make sure it is completely thawed out.

Blot steak with paper towel.

Lightly oil steak with olive oil.

Rub steak with salt and pepper.

Ensure that grill is hot and ready. Clean with wire brush if needed.

Place steak on grill for approximately 4 minutes per side. Do not overcook, steak is best served medium rare for optimum tenderness.

Allow steak to rest for 5-10 minutes off the grill before serving.

Hello, I have created this video to introduce you to the process of using Google Art Project.

Google Art Project is an amazing way to access works of art in numerous world renowned collections

electronically.

The first thing to do is to navigate to www.googleartproject.com . You can also type �Google Art Project�

into the search bar.

If you have a Google account, your log in information will appear in the upper right

hand corner.

If you do not have a Google account, you will need to create one.

You will notice as you scroll down the page that there are many options for searching

images.

If you simply want to browse, there are daily digest images, a selection of virtual tours,

and a number of other featured collections.

On the left hand menu bar, you�ll see that there are also options to search for images

by Artist�s name, medium, art movement and various other search categories.

You�ll notice one category labeled �Partners.� Selecting this option will take you to a page

where all of the museums and galleries who have shared their collections with Google

can be accessed.

You can search for a museum by name, or browse the alphabetical list.

Some of the institutions even give you the option to go on a virtual tour.

Of course, at any time, you can also search for exactly the collection, artist, or artwork

that you want to find.

I would encourage you to spend some time exploring your many options for looking at works of

art.

When you find a work of art that you want to save as part of your own personal collection,

you can select the heart icon at the upper right hand side of your screen.

This will save the image to your �favorites� section.

In your favorites, you can also create a collection of images.

For your group project, you�ll be creating a collection of images that relates to your

sub-heading from the theme chapter.

Each time you save an image, you can select that image from your favorites and then add

it to the collection.

Give your collection a title that corresponds to the chapter your group is working on, and

in the description explain the particular sub-heading that you personally are responsible

for.

The collection will be saved in your Favorites profile, and you can add to it later on.

The first step in your group project is to create a collection of images, and then share

this with your group.

Once your collection is complete, you will provide a link to the collection in your group

blog.

This will be the blog assignment for Week 9.

This way, your group members can visit your collection and see the images you have saved.

To share your collection with your group, simply copy the URL for your Google Art Project

Collection.

In your group blog, create an entry.

Insert a hyperlink by selecting the attachment tool.

It looks like a paperclip.

When the dialog box opens and asks you to �Select Content Link,� choose �Source

URL.� The box to �Specify Source URL� will open.

Paste your URL into this box, and submit.

Now, your group members should have a link to your collection where they can view your

images.

As you look through your group mates� collections, be thinking about the images that will be

best to represent your theme chapter in the final project.

As a group, you will decide to select two images from each student collection to include

in your group wiki.

This group conversation, and the final list of images, is your blog assignment for week

12.
