LONDON
ROBERTS LONDON
LOCATION LONDON BRIDGE
OK ladies and gentlemen boys and girls welcome to London
welcome to London Bridge its September that's what I'am going to share with you a little of life
here in town this month
OK September is very much a time of change here in town it's the start of
autumn which is a transition itself from summer to Winter
kids go back to school summer festival seasons just a memory and its a time to
plan look forward to winter its actually been quite a
warm September so far the trees have still got green leaves on
the one place you can definitely see seasonality is London's markets
especially food markets so I've come to London's most famous food market today
Borough market to take a look around get some coffee and get something to eat
(Music)
OK no trip to the market would be complete without a trip to Monmouth coffee
get things started at Monmouth coffee
lets get in line and get a coffee
Monmouth coffee was founded in 1978 on Monmouth Street in Covent Garden where
they used to also roast the beans in the basement they later open this store and
cafe and it's become a bit of a borough market institution Monmouth coffee do one
thing very well source and roast coffee beans everything else is a bit
old-fashioned they don't do social media and they still print newsletters believe
it or not which is not really the best way to tell people's or product stories
anymore the stores both have an old-fashioned charm about them the
stores are great places to come and buy Monmouth's coffee beans the staff seem
knowledgeable and helpful if you want help and recommendations both here and
in Covent garden both stores have seating areas the Covent Garden one is
minimalist and the borough store has a rustic feel that people clearly love
it's perfect for the market I don't know why people sit in either of them to be
honest not in a bad way they're just both in such interesting parts of London
I would and do always get a cup of coffee to go and then walk and talk with
it so a cup of Monmouth coffee is a great way to start any visit to Borough Market
and the place to come to buy coffee beans whole or ground for use at home
okay no better way to start a trip to Borough market than a visit to Monmouth coffee the queue is
always pretty long it goes pretty quickly
lets try the coffee
delicious coffee I'm going to enjoy my coffee and we'll go and take a look around market
but yeah I would definitely recommend a trip to Monmouth coffee
if your coming to the market they're a bit camera shy they don't really do that much social
media I don't think but yeah word of mouth
queues don't lie
(music)
okay what I really need to do is find something to eat for lunch
I'll see what looks good see if I can try something new probably try an
old favourite too
(music)
okay just here is the Kappacasien Dairy I've got a toasted
sandwich from here it used to be a market stall they started off as a market stall
on the other side of the market its so popular they've now got a store the queue is normally
alot longer for these amazing toasted cheese sandwiches toasted cheese sandwiches
but its raining so only the brave are in the queue
its a blend of cheeses they do a raclette as well so you can have grilled
cheese on top of potatoes lets try
toasted cheese sandwich perfect day for it its cold raining
that's delicious it's a blend of cheeses it's hard to describe the blend of flavors
a mix of Swiss style cheeses right I'am going to carry on having a look around
enjoying my first snack of the day toasted cheese sandwich
I think there is a little bit of onion in there as well getting a hint of red onion delicious
the queue or the line for this pasta restaurant here Padella is always long
all week especially on Saturdays I've never been I've never fancied queuing that long for pasta
but it must be incredible
(music)
okay Bread Ahead here is a bakery and bakery school some amazing bread and baked goods one of my
favourite spots there's no point of me walking around recommending places I
can point out my favourites but there's nowhere bad everything's good it's just
a matter of your personal preference and what you fancy eating on the day what I have
noticed over the last year or two is a big increase in Asian visitors and
big queues for fresh seafood I would imagine moving forward in the future that will
have a an influence on whats for sale at the market hello Asia
(Music)
okay I got in line got myself five oysters
five rock oysters
lets give these a go
pretty good
not the quietest spot for a food review
delicious
I've got the oysters no naked lemon no Tabasco no seasoning
just the sea water
pretty good
(Music)
okay Saturday lunchtime here at Borough Market is the busiest time so the crowds getting
pretty big and its starting to rain pretty heavy I know the perfect place to
hide from both the crowds and the rain the pub
(music)
okay ladies and gentleman I hope you enjoyed this trip to Borough market its Saturday lunchtime the
coffee at Monmouth good it's always good the toasted cheese
sandwiches from Kappacasein I'd definitely recommend them an old favourite the sea
food stall seemed very popular at the minute the oysters were good so I can
see why they're popular and obviously the globe pubs always worth a visit those of
you that have watched the Bridget Jones movies will know that's where Bridget Jones's lives
I'll head back to the station I'll see you guys a little later in the month
still raining
(Music)
CHARING CROSS
okay welcome to London's Charing Cross that is Charing Cross station behind me we're
very much in the centre of London not necessarily on a map but certainly if you see
London on a sign post anywhere in the UK the point of London its referring to
is just in front of me by Trafalgar Square were also very much in the heart
of London's entertainment district both historically and today here if you're
looking for something fun to do you'll find somewhere to do it near here most
of London's most popular and renowned theatres within a short walking distance
cinemas hotels restaurants bars so why am i here I'am heading up to London's
Chinatown it's also a short walk from here
yesterday was the autumn equinox now I'am no astrologer I'm not even sure
that's the right word for it however I do know that earth was
orbiting around the Sun at it's equator yesterday which means at that point days
are as long as the nights and it also means here in the northern hemisphere
it marks the start off Autumn and in the southern hemisphere the start of spring
so I guess in practical terms it means its just gonna be getting darker and
colder probably wetter here we don't really celebrate that in any major way
here however they do in China with something called mid-autumn festival or
new moon festival its got a number of names the moon tonight should be if its visible
visibly its biggest and brightest
it's also called mooncake festival because the way to celebrate is to eat moon cakes
so I'm gonna head up to Chinatown and try and get some moon cake hopefully it's
been decorate its the second biggest festival in China after New Year's so I'm
hoping Chinatown has been decorated and they're celebrateing it's the great thing
about living in a diverse and multicultural City you get to pickand choose
what you celebrate let's head up to Chinatown
(Music)
okay welcome to Chinatown
just behind me there is Leicester square tube station one of the entrances to it
and as you can see this is one of the streets that leads to the main street
of Chinatown ans its decorated with lanterns which they usually
put up twice a year as I was saying for Chinese New Year which is the
biggest celebration for the Chinese and then for Mid Autumn festival now so
first of all some of the bakeries shut quite early especially my favourite one so let's
go and try and get some moon cake I think from memory my favourite one is the
lotus paste version there are a number of different versions I think I prefer the
lotus paste to red bean maybe I'll try both
(Music)
Okay so this is the main street of London's Chinatown Gerrard Street always looks phenomenal
and atmospheric at night it looks especially cool at this time of year and at New Year's
when it's decorated with all the Chinese style lanterns
(Background music and crowd)
okay these two restaurants here the four seasons
I've never eaten in either of them but the queues the lines
I remember them like that for Chinese New Year so it's obviously
good queues generally don't lie its been there quite a while so its not hype right just up here Macclefield
Street is the Golden Gate bakery I'm hoping there still open they
shut quite early earlier than the others most places in Chinatown are cash only
considering
Chinese tourists Asian tourists love of cameras everywhere is remarkably camera
shy
right lets hope they've got some moon cake
so there are many variations of mooncake and they're all available in a number of
different sizes from tiny little ones to cakes big enough to feed a whole family
if you haven't had it before moon cake is incredibly filling so I'm just going to
get the smallest ones they have
okay success
moon cake from
the Golden Gate cake shop I got one of each red bean and lotus
i'm pretty sure lotus is the one I prefer
it's real filling
the round one I remember was lotus
that's the one I prefer it because its sweeter I think the red bean is a little more
savoury sweet but more balanced sweet and savory
to describe the red bean one the closest thing we have here is
like fig rolls very similar the pastry is kind of similar I haven't had one of them for years
the lotus paste is quite its like a sugar paste
I'm gonna go with fig roll again
yeah it's hard to describe you'll just have to come and try them the Golden Gate cake shop is one
my favourite cake shops its one of the best value for money there's also
the Kowloon down here there is new ones at either end
taiyaki shop down there as well right walk around the corner have a look at some more of
the decorations maybe get some more food something to drink
the Kowloon bakery here another great bakery they've even got a little stall out front selling
moon cakes
(Music)
CHINATOWN
(MUSIC)
Okay just here at this end of Chinatown opposite to the entrance of the W Hotel is
this bakery here Bake which is one of Chinatown here in
London's newest bakeries probably doing a roaring trade in
moon cakes this evening
got a taiyaki machine as well
no taiyaki tonight I've had enough cake
let's go and find something savory to eat
(Music)
okay here are my two favourite spots Baozi Inn for dumplings no well yeah Baozi inn
you can get Bao at Baozi inn Jen cafe for dumplings Jen cafe look pretty full up
it's also quite a nice night some I might get some skewers from Baozi inn and
go and take a look decorations and celebration
so this is one of my favourite dishes in the whole of Chinatown being handmade the Beijing
dumplings at Jen calf super simple delicious great value for money I
definitely recommend them but I'm gonna get something a little different tonight I eat
these all the time
(Music)
okay kind of successful from Baozi inn got a little
they call it a pork sandwich its like a fluffy Bao bun
pastry and then pulled pork within it and some cucumber but I got the last of the pork meat
in the slow cooker so hopefully it's good its been cooking all day so it's normally a
portion of two I've got a portion of one I've had them before they're delicious
lets find somewhere to
sit kind of and try tonight's pork bun
okay let's try the
lets try the bao from Baozi inn
there is quite a lot of pork in this one as it was the last one
that is delicious its probably the best one I've ever had from Baozi Inn
because it was the last one they pilled all the pork in one bao definitely recommend
that place
(music)
okay finishing off this evenings visit to London's Chinatown with a bubble tea
from char time
okay let's try the tea there is so many flavor combinations I'm struggling to remember what
I ordered that is a regular milk tea regular size
their standard milk tea less ice regular sugar of which there are dozens
of combinations dozens of different types of tea and what they
call toppings which all sink to the bottom apart from maybe the pudding I think
even pudding sinks I just got pearls today
pretty good right I'am going to enjoy my tea and head back down to Charing Cross I hope you enjoyed
this look at London's Chinatown mid-autumn festival here in Chinatown
and a little look at London during the month of September
so from Chinatown I'll see you guys next time toodles
(background music and street crowd noise)
The End
