LANGUAGE: a MOTOR skill or a COGNITIVE skill? - Duration: 10:04.
Hi there, Vladimir here with another video about how to learn English
We've all heard the expression:
practice makes perfect
And I believe we all agree with the validity of that statement
Practice does make perfect,
we need a lot of practice in order to perfect
the skill or knowledge we are trying to acquire
it takes time and repetition
my question to you is:
What does
I need to practice my English
mean?
What does it mean to practice one's English?
What do we need to do to learn the piano?
We need to practice
What do we mean by practice?
We mean: play the piano
hit the piano keys.
To learn the piano we need to practice playing the piano
from day 1
What do we need to do to learn to swim?
We need to practice
To learn to swim we need to go to the pool
practice swimming
jump into the water
You can't stay home and learn how to swim by watching videos or reading books
You need to get wet,
from day 1
What do we need to do to learn tennis?
To learn tennis, we need practice
we need to play tennis from day 1
grab a racket and hit the courts
What do we need to do to learn the moonwalk?
To learn the moonwalk we need to dance
We can't just stay home, read books and watch videos
and expect to learn the piano, swimming, tennis, dancing
We need practice from day 1
We all agree with those statements 100%
the question today:
What does it mean to practice one's English?
People say
to learn English we need to practice our English
What does it mean to practice one's English?
What do you mean when you say I need to practice my English?
And the answer is
But before you tell me your answer I wanna ask you 1 more question
What do we need to do to become a medical doctor?
Practice?
Treat people from day 1?
What do we need to do to become a civil engineer?
Build bridges from day 1?
What do we need to do to become a nuclear physicist
an accountant, a programmer,
a pilot?
Fly a plane from day 1?
Would you fly on that plane?
My last question is
Is language:
Tennis or Medicine
Swimming or Programming
Dancing or Piloting
Is language a motor skill or a cognitive skill?
Is language about
using your muscles or
your brain
What does
I need to practice my English
mean?
What does it mean to practice one's English?
Let me spell it out for you
First thing first
There is no such thing as practice speaking English
There is no such thing as practice your speaking
You don't practice your speaking,
you practice giving your opinion on a certain topic in English
And for you to give your opinion on a certain topic
the stock market,
you need to read about that topic in English
You can't read about the stock market in your native language
and expect to have a fluent conversation about it in English
Language is not a motor skill
Yes, language has a motor component,
namely accent
but that's less than 1%
that's why people have non-native accents.
There is a limit on pronunciation.
Language is a cognitive skill
Language is first and foremost about acquiring knowledge / information
Language is not a motor skill Language is a cognitive skill
Language is knowledge / information
Information about your thoughts and feelings
about the stock market,
about the weather,
flight schedules
Language is information, knowledge
And how do we acquire knowledge?
Medical knowledge,
accounting, knowledge,
engineering knowledge
Through practice?
What kind of practice?
through speaking?
We acquire knowledge through reading and listening
but primarily though reading
It is how people become medical doctors
accountants, civil engineers, pilot
many books
And of course, treating patients
auditing firms,
flying airplanes
building bridges
But only after you have the knowledge
Input before output
Input is what we mean by practice English
We don't learn by speaking
Let me take that back
We do learn by speaking,
what we call: pick up a few words
but that is an extremely inefficient way of learning vocabulary and grammar
Inefficient and expensive
People asking their language teachers
What does this and that word mean?
How to pronounce this and that word?
There are free dictionaries for that
Stop wasting your time and money
There is a complete lack of critical thinking especially on YouTube
It boggles the mind how undiscerning YouTube audience is
You deserve your teachers,
you deserve to have your money taken away from you
People paying crazy money to practice their speaking
Membership sites,
fearless speakers,
extraordinary speakers
English speaking club
What is it that you do?
Speak English?
Pronounce words,
talk about the English language
Do you have any idea how crazy this is?
You can have a debate club,
where you debate various topics in English
English is not a topic
You join science groups to discuss science,
business groups to discuss business,
art groups to discuss art,
or if you want to discuss movies, you can join my movie group
Movie through English
where we talk about movies in English
We don't focus on the language,
we focus on the movie and we talk about it in English
movie is first, language is second
Discuss movie scenes, special effects dialogues, performances
through English
It is not English through Movies but Movies through English
but before you talk you need to watch scenes and read scripts and transcripts,
you need to prepare
Input before output
Reading and listening before speaking
Stop wasting your time and money and read my book Virtually Native
and then join my Movies through English group
My book is available on Amazon and virtuallynative.com

Should I invest in Content or Advertising? | Truly Social with Tara - Duration: 6:14.
- Several times over the past couple of months,
I've encountered conversations with current
and potential clients where they bring up a false dichotomy.
I keep hearing things like, we don't have the budget to
spend on content, it's all ear-marked for Facebook ads, or
I'm trying to figure out whether we should spend our
marketing budget on content or advertising, to which I reply
- Whatchu talkin' about, Willis?
- You're spending your entire budget on Facebook ads?
What's in those ads and, what are the results?
The worst part is that the answer to my question
about results ranges from well, not really sure yet
to enormous cost per acquisition.
Digging deeper I find out that at some point they were
also this bill of goods from an ad agency that said they
would get x amount results from y amount of spend, and that
they wouldn't need to pay for strategy or content at all.
- I'm sorry what?
- So I'm here to tell you that you've been sold
a false dichotomy, spending y amount won't result in x
results automatically, paid and content with a strategy
can actually help you spend less of y to achieve more of x.
- Put um together and what do you got, Biddidi-Bobbidi-Boo
x plus y equals y.
- Let me tell you how, my name is
Tara and this is Truly Social.
(upbeat music)
- I think that the best way to explain this is to present
a case study where names and a few other details
have been changed in order to protect the anonymity
of a client but I reassure you that the data is real.
- I believe you too, see the quotations I'm making with
my claw hand, it means I don't believe you.
- As per my opening, I had a conversation with this client
where they told me that they were spending pretty much
all of their social media budget on Facebook ads it was a
pretty healthy budget too for their market size, they were
spending around $75,000 per month on Facebook ads alone.
The "content" of these ads, a video that they had
professionally produced, now it was a lovely video
and had a great clear message but that was it.
One video with five different messages introducing it.
So at first they got lots of click-throughs and
Facebook even recorded a pretty decent number of
"conversions" which was equivalent to someone filling in a
form for more information on their website.
- More preaching to the converted.
- Their cost per conversion was around $400 which may
sound high but I calculate that their customer lifetime
value is around $50,000 so it's actually pretty good.
The question though that I had was,
are those qualified leads, are the people that filled
out the form actually gonna become customers?
Now deeper investigations into the results show that
the answer to that question was no.
- NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- There were three qualified leads as a result of
three months of running this campaign which made
the actual cost of acquisition $75,000 per person.
- Yikes.
- Meanwhile, less expensive tactics, traditional ones like
one to one and sales teams and going to conferences well
they were bringing in fewer leads but more qualified leads.
Now meanwhile, this ad agency they hired was reporting
amazing results and not really taking responsibility
for the fact that their leads well they weren't
qualified or actually converting.
They actually said we did our job, we can drive a horse
to water but we can't make them drink.
- I could drink.
- That's horse *beep*, this is where a strategy
and better content come into play.
Nobody even asked if Facebook was the right platform.
- Spoiler alert, they do not add up.
- So, we researched the audience, created a content
strategy that was relevant to that audience,
found the right platforms and the right means to pay,
which actually included search.
Then we made sure we worked with our clients
to track in-ad metrics so we could hone
and tweet the mix until we got it right.
At the end of the day, they took $15,000 of that $75,000
spend and put it into strategy content and active listening
which created better results for a smaller paid budget.
- Wow, it's much better than finding a nickel.
- In another case, we were working independently
from an ad agency where we worked on a content strategy
where we boosted each post for about $200 across multiple
platforms to increase the reach of those posts.
And they created a pure ad strategy, so there wasn't
the dichotomy there but we weren't exactly working together.
- I need to stop being a frenemy.
- However, an analysis about four months into our
publishing strategy, showed that our content was
converting 70 percent better than the ads.
So our content which was just meant to create
relationships and trust and grow brand
was actually driving more leads in the ads itself.
- Have a gold star.
- So the point of all of this is that, you should not
be asking whether you should be spending your money
on content or advertising, instead you should be asking
how they can work really effectively together.
- So instead we should settle our differences and live
together in harmony for the rest of our days.
- With the right content targeted at the right audience
and the right platforms mixed with the smart ads strategy
that goes way beyond Facebook, seriously what is it
about Facebook that makes everybody froth at the mouth at
this moment, there is more to the internet than Facebook.
- Who would deliberately use Facebook
in such a horribly reckless way?
- It is a false dichotomy to pit content against
advertising, any one of these without the other
will result in an inefficient spend of your money.
Without great content, your ads will cost you way more than
they should, without ads, your content may not
find its way in front of the right audience.
But together they make the other great.
- Working together in harmony.
- So you think you can't afford content, well think again,
I can almost guarantee you that the combination of the two,
content and ads will cost you no more than just advertising
on its own and well, most likely less.
My name is Tara and this has been Truly Social.

Should You Install Wall Plastic or Floor Plastic First? | Vapor Barrier | Crawl Space Encapsulation - Duration: 8:27.
Hey, there.
Michael Church with Crawl Space Ninja.
I'm going to talk to Jason on our Ask A Ninja page, which, by the way, I'm going to put
a link down below, so he's got a great question about, "How should he install plastic in his
crawl space when there's already floor plastic installed?"
So stay tuned.
Jason, I appreciate you getting on the Ask A Ninja call with us.
Please feel free to share with us a little bit about yourself, and then, what's your
first question?
Sure.
My name is Jason and I'm from Tallahassee, Florida.
Actually, I just recently moved to Tallahassee and bought a house.
During the home inspection process, it was pointed out that there was some mold in the
crawl space and that it needed to be addressed.
The home was built in the 70s and where, from the research that I've done, the idea was,
they would have a vented crawl space.
Well, basically, based on a lot of the videos that I've watched that you've created, that's
kind of a big no-no.
It's actually against code right now.
I went through the process of going into the crawl space.
The previous owners did lay down recently a vapor barrier on the ground, but they only
went ... they attached it, they taped it maybe about six inches up the wall.
Okay, so they actually
used tape to attach it to the wall, is that correct?
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, I guess it's tape, but it almost looks like that there's like, roofing shingles or
something like that to the wall, that it's a then almost like tarred to the wall.
It's, I don't know, it looked different from everything that I was able to research.
Okay.
But it is connected to the wall.
And so, I guess the question is, I want to now go ahead and finish putting vapor barrier
on the wall.
Okay.
And so, so what I'm wondering is, I think normally, what you would do is, you would
put the vapor barrier on the wall and then come through and put the floor vapor barrier
on and then secure the floor piece to the wall tape piece.
I guess my question is, "Is it okay, in this situation, given that I'm going to leave the
floor vapor barrier, that I just put the wall piece on and then over top of the floor piece
tape it, tape that part down?"
Got you.
Okay, so with us, if we were to do it from scratch, without there being a vapor barrier
down, we would actually put the wall plastic on first and then bring it six, seven feet
away from the wall, one piece, and then put the floor over the wall plastic.
That's typically how we would install it.
What you're wanting to do is, basically put the wall plastic on and then drape it down
over the floor, that the floor plastic that's already there.
Is that correct?
Yes.
Okay.
Is that floor plastic really dirty or is it pretty clean?
It's pretty clean-
As I said, it's, I don't think it's very old.
I don't know, I think they just recently did it.
Okay-
All right, so yeah.
I think as long ... The only thing about an older vapor barrier or plastic is that, it
might be really dirty and obviously, it may not tape really well.
But if yours is pretty clean, I think it would be okay to do that, as long as you weren't
getting water in above the original plastic.
Because the problem is is that, once you start getting water, if your foundation wall starts
allowing water through.
You may not have this issue, I'm just speaking hypothetically, but if you've got a wall that
water's coming through the block or the concrete or whatever it is, over the original plastic,
it's eventually going to get on top of that original plastic and then work its way out.
So that's why we do the floor over the wall vs. the wall over the floor.
Does that make sense?
Okay.
I got you.
So then the water will be sandwiched in between the two layers there?
That is correct and-
Eventually, that water could wear out the adhesive of the tape or whatever it is that
you use to join those two pieces together.
Okay, okay.
Okay.
Great.
All right, so okay.
And then, you said they come out about six feet from the corner along the floor?
Right.
There's really no magic number, but the further, the better.
Yeah.
I mean, if you buy-
If you buyed a piece that's 10 feet wide and your wall's four feet tall, then yeah, go
six feet out.
If you got a 20-foot-wide piece, go 16 feet out, you know what I mean?
Because the-
Yeah-
The weak point is going to be where the wall meets the ground.
All right?
Because that's where the water's going to pool, in most cases.
The further you can get that piece of plastic, that wall plastic away from the wall, the
less likely it's going to mess it up.
Everything's working great so far.
As I said, I got the dehumidifier running now, and I just got to get running a little
bit early, because I knew I wasn't going to get to the wall piece until this weekend.
But I wanted to get things started-
And that's a good point-
Get that hooked up.
That's a really good point I think the viewers should know is that, the dehu, you just go
and stick it in there and get it started.
Whether you got the plastic right or not, the de, controlling humidity and the dew point,
those dehus are powerful enough to where they can at least get things started and get things
drying out, even if you don't have the plastic perfect.
I think you brought up a good point there-
Yeah-
Because most people want it, they want the plastic installed and getting all that done.
Well, just go and start drying the crawl space out.
That's the most important part.
That's good that you did that.
Yeah.
I mean, right now, I have it, the thermostat set at 59, but well, just to get it started,
that's basically what the instructions told me to do.
But I guess, I eventually want to set that to like, 50, right?
Fifty's kind of the magic number that I want to set that to, right?
Yeah, that's where we set it at.
Yes.
And the reason why we set the dehus at 50 is, just in case the dehu is not measuring
accurately.
In other words, if it's off three or four points, I'd rather err on the side of it being
a little lower than 55 or 60 percent.
It also gives you the opportunity to catch it a little faster if something happens or
if the power goes off, it's already lower.
But if it's borderline 60 and you lose power for a day or so, it's going to creep up really
fast on you.
We like it-
Got you-
At about 50 percent.
Okay.
Then, again, that's what I'll follow, then.
Okay, all right, Jason.
Well, thanks again for calling.
Thanks for getting the Aprilaire from us.
We really appreciate your business, too.
Thank you so much.

Çağatay Ulusoy or Aras Bulut İynemli - who better manage his career? - Duration: 3:17.
Çağatay Ulusoy or Aras Bulut İynemli - who better manage his career?
Turkish bloggers lifted the veil of secrecy behind the scenes
of the series Insider and Çukur.
At the same time praising Çağatay Ulusoy for his cleverness.
As it turns out, the actor had a contract to shoot for two TV series of Ay Yapim company
and he fulfilled all his obligations under the contract.
However, he immediately warned the producers that he was not going to do the second season
of the Insider series.
This did not stop CEO of Ay Yapim company Kerem Çatay,
who promised Show TV channel several seasons
of Içerde, if things go well, ignoring the warning of the actor
(don't worry we'll convince him).
In May 2017, Çağatay signed an agreement with Netflix, warning once again that in any
case he was leaving and there will be no continuation of Sarp Yilmaz's story for him.
TV channel demanded that the TV company "continue the show" as agreed.
The producers of Ay Yapim had a problem - either to kill Sarp and continue without him,
which would most likely kill the ratings, or come up with something new.
The compromise was found - Kerem Çatay offered Show TV the new series Çukur
practically with the same team, assuring that the same audience will watch the new show.
According to bloggers, Çağatay did the right thing.
After seeing the first series of the second season of çukur they realized that
Aras Bulut İynemli is the leading character only nominally,
as the action develops in several directions at once.
Being an actor is not so difficult, but to become a superstar is difficult, it depends
on a well-formed career and, of course, smart managers who need to tell the actor when he
becomes a " stock character"

THE CHAOS! IS THIS A RACE OR A DEMOLITION DERBY? 😂 [Sub ENG] - Duration: 8:06.
Ciao everyone, here it's Marchettino and let's start another racing weekend with the Smart cars!
Here we are at another racing weekend in the Smart E-Cup championship,
this time I'm in the circuit of Vallelunga and I'm very excited because it's my second time driving in this fun track
I know my car pretty well and after a morning spent between practice laps and qualify I'm very satisfied of my results because
in practice I did P7 with room of improvement, I still had to learn the track lines,
whereas in qualify I did P4, very happy the podium is close and now let's watch the highlights of Race1!
P4 has been my best start so far and my opponents defended very well the podium, in fact I started P4 and ended P4!
Sadly no podium in Race1 but I did my best to defend P4 that is a great result with the points for the championship
And now let's show the highlights of Race2, with the rule of inverted starting grid I started P5 this time!
WTF!
You see, Race2 has been madness! I think it's been the funniest race of the championship so far,
we fought in the race, collisions did not miss, lots of action, lots of fun,
I started P5 and ended P4, so close to the podium again but
before the end of the championship I'm hopeful, I'll keep fightin' to hit the podium at least once!
Some of the strongest drivers of the championship are based in Rome so I raced at their home
and I defended very nicely, I kept behind me talented drivers that have been tough.
I'm 4th in the championship with 4 points far from the 3rd so the championship is still open for me and guys
I see you in the next race the 27th-28th October in the circuit of Magione.
Here comes the end another race of the elctric Smart championship and
make sure to Like the video if you enjoy it, subscribe to my YouTube if you haven't yet and as always thanks for watching, ciao!

6 men Trump has defended amid assault accusations of assault or misconduct - Duration: 9:26.
President Donald Trump is defending Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh against allegations of sexual assault when he was in high school, questioning why the accuser or her parents didn't take the matter to law enforcement when it allegedly occurred and praising Kavanaugh as having "an impeccable reputation
" Kavanaugh is only the latest man whom the president has defended amid allegations of sexual misconduct or physical or sexual assault
Others include former White House aide Rob Porter, former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, Fox News' late CEO Roger Ailes and former host Bill O'Reilly, and former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski
Trump himself has faced repeated allegations of sexual misconduct or assault, which he has dismissed by calling the women who have accused him "liars
" Brett Kavanaugh Trump appeared for several days to hold back on calling out Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, who says that he sexually assaulted her when the two were in high school in the Washington, D
C., suburbs in the 1980s. But on Friday, a week after the allegations against Kavanaugh become public, the president appeared to question the veracity of Ford's account, tweeting that he has "no doubt" that if the attack "was as bad as she says," she or her parents would have complained to police
Similarly, in an apparent response to Ford's lawyers' request to the Senate Judiciary Committee that the FBI investigate her allegations, Trump tweeted, "Why didn't someone call the FBI 36 years ago?" Kavanaugh has strongly denied what he called the "completely false allegation
" The nominee said, "I have never done anything like what the accuser describes — to her or to anyone
This never happened." Trump has continued to be lavish in his praise of Kavanaugh since the accusation surfaced, telling a crowd at a rally in Las Vegas on Friday night, "Brett Kavanaugh is one of the finest human beings you will ever have the privilege of knowing or meeting
" Trump continued that Kavanaugh is "a great intellect, a great gentleman, [with] an impeccable reputation, went to Yale Law School, top student
" Rob Porter Rob Porter resigned as White House staff secretary in February amid allegations of domestic abuse by his two ex-wives
Porter denied the allegations in a statement in the wake of his resignation, CNN reported Feb
7. "These outrageous allegations are simply false," he said in his statement, CNN reported
"I have been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign
" Trump responded to Porter's departure by praising his work performance and wishing him well
The president in his Feb. 9 remarks didn't mention the women alleging the abuse. "He says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that," the president said
"It's obviously a tough time for him. He did a very good job when he was in the White House, and we hope he has a wonderful career, and hopefully he will have a great career ahead of him
" Trump said news of the allegations was "very sad." "It was very sad when we heard about it," the president said
"And certainly, he's also very sad." Five days later after his initial remarks about Porter, Trump made another statement, saying he is "totally opposed" to domestic violence
He did not specifically tie his comment to the accusations against Porter. "I am totally opposed to domestic violence and everybody here knows that," Trump said on Feb
14. "I am totally opposed to domestic violence of any kind. Everyone knows that." Roy Moore Back in November, ahead of the special election to fill the Senate spot in Alabama vacated by Jeff Sessions, Trump publicly weighed in on the embattled Republican candidate Roy Moore
Trump spoke of the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against Moore and sided with him
"You have to listen to him also" and "he totally denies it," Trump said. Moore was accused by eight women of sexual misconduct or impropriety
He denied those claims. Bill O'Reilly Trump defended former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly after an April 1 New York Times report that described settlements he reached with five women who accused him of harassment
O'Reilly denied the misconduct claims. Trump, who has known O'Reilly for years, told the Times O'Reilly is "a person I know well" and "a good person" and that he didn't think "Bill did anything wrong
" "Personally, I think he shouldn't have settled," Trump said. Roger Ailes After Roger Ailes stepped down as Fox News Chairman and CEO, Trump praised him and said: "He's been a friend of mine for a long time
" Ailes' resignation came after former anchor Gretchen Carlson left Fox News on June 23 and shortly afterward filed a lawsuit against her former boss
Fox News and Ailes, who died in May 2017, had denied Carlson's allegations. Carlson settled the lawsuit for a reported $20 million
Carlson was one of several women, including Megyn Kelly, who came forward with allegations of impropriety against Ailes during his tenure at Fox
Then-candidate Trump came to his defense. "Some of the women that are complaining, I know how much he's helped them
now all of a sudden, they are saying these horrible things about him, it's very sad because he's a very good person
I've always found him to be just a very, very good person," Trump said during an appearance on "Meet the Press" in July 2016
Corey Lewandowski In March 2016, Trump's then-campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was accused of grabbing a female reporter after a campaign event, and Trump's campaign responded with a statement from then-campaign press secretary Hope Hicks saying the accusation was "entirely false
" Trump himself weighed in two days later, after the March 10 Republican primary debate
"Everybody said nothing happened. Perhaps she made the story up," Trump said. Weeks later, when charges were filed against Lewandowski, Trump tweeted and called Lewandowski "a very decent man" and said that the footage of the incident showed "nothing there!"
