Hello, good morning, welcome.
It's good to see you. I hope you are well.
This vlog will be about action cams and it will be a lot of talking, actually just talking.
So if this topic doesn't interest you, then I invite you to the next film.
For those interested, a small background first.
I have a GoPro Hero 4 for some time,
and sporadically I use them in my films, very sporadically
but when I use it, I come to the conclusion that one or two cameras more would be handful.
But since the camera lies in the drawer for most of the time,
I didn't see the point in buying another GoPro, which costs a lot.
For now I am using friends' cameras,
but I was thinking to buy a budget cameras like $ 150 - $ 180.
Luckily, I didn't buy it. Why luckily?
Because for the last trip to the Dolomites I borrowed two such cameras
it turned out that they aren't very useful to me and cause more problems than profits.
Let me explain it to you.
Of course, it's all from my point of view, how I use these cameras and how I edit footages.
And it turned out that there are a few trivialities that turned out to be very important to me. First things first.
The first is related to post-production, the editting. So Pro Tune.
GoPro, generally every action cam has a very strong contrast and very saturated colors.
And it looks nice, but there are problems when we try to connect it
with footages from other cameras, just like I do. Where I mix shots from GoPro, from G7X and from DSLR.
And for these shots to be similar, you need to work a little.
But GoPro has Pro Tune, which is a mode that allows you to set a flat image recording.
What does a flat image mean? Generally low contrast, unsaturated colors
thanks to that we have a much greater possibility in colorgrading for
color correction and matching of recordings to each other.
Unfortunately, there is no such thing in these cheaper cameras.
Everything was more or less okay when I combined shots from nice, sunny days.
It looked like this, for example.
They look very similar after colorgrading
because my style of color correction is similar to those from sports cameras, quite a contrast, saturated colors.
However, when the shots were taken on cloudy days, as here.
Problems started.
I have changed the colorgrading of these cheaper cameras several times
so that the colors are more or less consistent
with footage from GoPro and G7X. To snow looks similar.
And it turned out that the shots from this cheaper camera look as if they were black and white
because these Christmas trees are so dark it's almost black, but at least the snow in the shots is similar.
It pissed me a lot. And it turned out
it added more work to me, and I'm not completely satisfied with the final effect.
The second element is Quick Capture.
So the option in GoPro, which I have somewhere here.
The option in GoPro that when I press the shutter button, the camera will start itself and start recording.
You will say that this is a solution for lazy people.
After all, just pres power button and wait a moment, press the shutter button and it's after the problem.
Imagine that this camera is mounted on a ski helmet somewhere here.
It's ok. All in all, I can hold this button down and press it, but when it's mounted in the back...
The problem is starting to happen, especially since I'm right-handed.
I'll reach out with my left hand, but it's not very comfortable.
It can be done, but let's take longboard, for example.
When the camera is mounted here, having Quick Capture, I am able to bend down,
push this button quickly and start recording while riding.
I go short on longboard and I'm not good at it, so I can not imagine going in a squat
to be able turn on camera and push shutter speed button.
Probably I would drive into something or fall down.
A trifle, but if you often turn the camera on and off, because during skiing
When skiing, you ski down, then you ride for a few minutes on the lift,
it makes no sense for the camera to be on and record
so you finish recording and turn it off completely.
If you do it many times, it is not very handy.
Especially, as the camera is mounted in strange places. On the boot, somewhere in the back on the ski,
to reach this camera you have to bend very much.
And it is very impractical.
The third element is beeping when switching on and off.
What Michał, something doesn't suit you with a beeping?
Oh yes. In GoPro, it pissed me off at the beginning. Why it beeps so many times and is loud.
I reduced it to 70%, it was the time it was off, but now it is 70%.
Why is this beeping important? Because it's not about that cheap cameras are beeping.
The point is, they don't beep, they actually beep but so quietly that it's no matter.
Holding them so I barely heard that they are turning on or start recording.
When the camera is on the helmet and I do'nt see blinking diodes or the screen
and I am not able to say whether the camera is recording or not,
these sound signals are the only information for me, whether the recording started.
So with GoPro there is no problem. At 70% loudness, I can hear everything clearly whe it is here.
Those cameras, loudness to the max and having them mounted on the back of the helmet, I heard nothing.
The only sure way was to take off the helmet, launch the camera and check if it was recording.
Setting up the helmet and I could go.
It turned out that one of the cameras didn't record any shots for 1.5 days.
I don't know if I pushed the shutter too early or it stopped recording for some reason.
I don't know. But I didn't hear any sound messages so I rode the whole 1.5 days
and got nothing.
Now you can see the GoPro raid that is sucked, ismeaningless.
In fact, they are in poor shape, you can accuse them of various things, certainly that their cameras are too expensive.
But the comfort of using them is completely different. Last year, I borrowed from Kamil GoPro Hero.
It was such a basic version, released probably along with Hero4.
No screen, no wifi, built-in battery, 30 fps in 1080 was max.
But I rode with it for a few days and didn't have any impression that it didn't start recording.
There wasn't a situation that I was connecting to a PC and there were no recordings.
There was no lack of confidence that this camera records when I am going, I just knew that it all works.
And with these $ 150- $ 180 cameras, I didn't have such feelings.
Either I missed the recordings or I wasn't sure if the camera was recording.
So what do you say, Go Pro god?
Not that Go Pro god. It''s one of the options. The second option, apparently Sony has very good cameras.
I didn't have any contact with them, apparently quite good, but they also have other mountings.
So I dont know how it looks here with that.
I looked at Xiaomi too or however you pronounce it.
And these cameras have a flat profile and look pretty good.
But when we talk about budget cameras, we can not talk about Sony or Xiaomi.
How is it? Xiaomi expensive? Like Go Pro?
Look at the prices.
Cheaper model Xiaomi, which has all the necessary things for me
costs $390 with waterproof housing.
What is the point in buying a camera without waterproof housing?
So it's $390. So it's a level of Hero 5.
Xiaomi in top version it's about $480.
Maybe it's a bit cheaper than the Hero 6, but that's a $ 40 difference.
Not $250 or more.
This isn't budget option.
Apparently, Xiaomi is quite cool, but I have not used them either.
So what? Are you saying that these cameras for $ 150 are sucked?
They are not sucked. If you use the camera twice a year on vacation to shoot a movie and show off your family and friends.
They are pretty cool. The quality is acceptable.
Of course, do not expect that the camera for 1/3 of the price of Xiaomi, GoPro or Sony will have the same quality.
The quality differs, even from 4 Hero. But image is nice to watch.
If you don'ot mix shots with footage from other cameras, then lack of a flat profile don't bother you.
And these colors are juicy, it looks nice. Especially on sunny days.
And that's ok. You don't spend much. You use sporadically. You have something to show off. And it's cool.
But if you plan to use it, let say, more ambitiously, this isn't the best choice.
And what would you do if you had to buy a new action cam?
I would probably buy used Hero 4.
Not to spend too much, but to have what meets my expectations.
Uh, I talked a lot. That's probably all from me.
What is your opinion? Maybe you agree with me, maybe not. If you want to speak go and comment.
If you used Xiaomi or Sony cameras, you can write about it in the comments.
It may be useful to me if I will buy another camera one day.
You can share your knowledge with me and with others.
In the meantime, I wish you a nice day.
See you.
