Takayama is a pleasant mountain town in the northern Japan Alps famous for its well preserved

old district, woodworking, and its festival.

Located in the mountainous Hida Region in the northern part of Gifu Prefecture, Takayama

(which is often called Hida Takayama to distinguish it from other places of the same name) can

be reached in just under two and a half hours from Nagoya via the JR Hida Limited Express

train and in about 5 and half hours from Tokyo by direct highway bus.

Here are a few other options to access Takayama, which may be helpful depending on your location.

Takayama has been renowned for many centuries for its high-quality timber and the skill

of its carpenters; aspects that are still prominently displayed through the town's architecture.

In the feudal days of the Edo period, when Japan was ruled by dozens of regional lords

(called daimyo), the shogun in Edo had direct control over a few strategically important

locations (such as Sado Island for its gold & silver mines, and Nagasaki for its port).

Takayama used to be one such location due to its excellent wood and talented craftsmen,

which were highly valuable commodities in those days.

This brought significant wealth to the town and its merchants.

Even today Hida lumber, wood crafts, and furniture remain famous nation-wide.

Takayama is also an excellent base from which you can reach many nearby worthwhile locations

such as the beautiful nature of Okuhida as well as Shirakawago's massive farmhouses.

With this in mind, here are our Top 5 Recommendations for Takayama and the nearby areas.

Number Five: Takayama Jinya

As mentioned earlier, because of its valuable timber resources, in the late 1600s

Takayama was put under direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Staffed by officials sent from Edo (or Tokyo), the Takayama Jinya building complex in the

middle of town served as the local government office until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

Today the buildings still stand and have been turned into a well-maintained museum where

visitors can walk through the large tatami rooms which were once offices, conference

rooms, and there is even an interesting "interrogation room".

Also, next to the main building is the largest traditional rice storehouse in Japan which

now showcases many historical items and documents.

Number Four: Takayama Festival

Alongside the Kyoto Gion Matsuri and also Chichibu Night Festival, the Takayama Festival

is ranked as one of Japan's three most beautiful festivals.

Occurring twice each year this is not only a fun event to witness but also showcases

the town's incredible woodworking abilities.

The main attractions of the event are the parade of heavily decorated yatai, or festival floats,

performances with highly sophisticated wooden karakuri dolls decorating the floats,

and the procession of the ornate mikoshi through the town's streets which contain the shinto

deities of the main shrine.

Perhaps the highlight of the whole festival is on the evening of the first day when the

floats are pulled through the streets of Takayama's old town for several hours.

These two festivals which take place each Spring on April 14th and 15th as well as in

Autumn on October 9th and 10th.

During these dates, Takayama becomes extremely crowded with visitors.

If you hope to see one of the festivals, we highly recommend arranging accommodations

well in advance since lodging throughout the city gets booked many months beforehand.

Number Three: Okuhida Onsen

In our opinion, the Okuhida Region is one of the best places in Japan for experiencing

large outdoor hot spring baths in beautiful natural surroundings.

From central Takayama it's an easy side trip to any of the five onsen towns in the

Okuhida Region.

Each town has its own character and offers public bathhouses or ryokan with luxurious

open-air baths (called rotemburo) from which bathers can admire the surrounding Northern

Japan Alps while they soak.

We highly recommend staying overnight at one of the many onsen ryokan in the Okuhida region,

especially one with a rustic, local atmosphere and includes meals around a fireplace.

Guests of these Japanese style inns are given unlimited access to the pools at the inn where

they are staying.

Most ryokan will also welcome daytime visitors, but will charge an admission fee.

A prime example being the Suimeikan Karukaya.

If you end up the Shin-Hotaka onsen town, also be sure to ride the Shin-Hotaka ropeway

which features Japan's first double decker gondola and also has incredible views of the

Northern Japan Alps from the top.

Number Two: Shirakawago

Shirakawago is a formerly remote area where unique, massive gassho-zukuri farmhouses have

survived and can be viewed.

It can be reached in an hour by bus from the Takayama bus center located

just next to the JR Takayama train station.

Although only a few decades ago this farming village was relatively unknown, in 1995 the

area achieved UNESCO Cultural Heritage Status, only the fourth location to do so in Japan,

and has since become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire country.

The main attraction of Shirakawago is Ogimachi, which is the section of town with the highest

concentration of gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.

"Gassho-zukuri" means "constructed like hands in prayer" because it's said the

steep thatched-roofs look like the praying hands of a Buddhist monk.

Impressively, these extremely solid houses are constructed without using any nails

yet have withstood the large amounts of snow the valley receives each winter for centuries.

Several of these farmhouses, such as the Wada house, are open to the public and many also

offer overnight stays which (in our opinion) is the best way to experience Shirakawago.

Usually these stays are fully booked several months in advance, so we recommend making

reservations well ahead of time if you are hoping to spend a night in a farmhouse.

Shirakawago is extremely picturesque in any season.

In spring there are cherry blossoms, in summer the town is green and lush, fall brings beautiful

colors, and in winter the areas is covered in a blanket of snow and there are night illuminations.

If you are unable to make it all the way to Shirakawa-go from Takayama, an excellent alternative

is Hida no Sato.

This well-done open air museum features over 30 traditional buildings from the Hida region

and is located right in Takayama.

Number One: Takayama Old Town

Featuring buildings dating back as far the 1600s, Takayama's Old Town district is one

of the best preserved historic districts in the entire country and definitely a must-see destination.

Walking these atmospheric streets, visitors experience a first-hand glimpse of what it

was like to visit Takayama during the Edo period.

The Old Town can be reached in an easy ten minute walk from Takayama Station.

There are also local buses which can be boarded at the station as well.

The Old Town area of Takayama is made up primarily of three streets,

IchinoMachi, Ninomachi, and Sannomachi.

Particularly worthwhile is Sannomachi Street which has many old homes, shops, cafes, and

sake breweries, some of which have been in business since the 17th century.

Also nearby is the Hachiman Shrine to which the autumn Takayama Festival is dedicated,

and several historic houses of local merchant families that have been opened to the public.

In the Northern part of the Old Town is where one of Takayama's two daily morning markets is held.

Here vendors sell local produce and crafts.

We hope this top five list gives you a good place to start when planning your trip to Takayama.

Why Do Bad Things Happen To Me! - Duration: 2:12.

There's no question that there is pain and intense suffering in this world.

Every day in the news you'll see another school shooting, terroist attacks, racism, one can't

help to ask God, "why does He allow bad things to happen?"

For most people, its not until a tragedy occurs when they remember God, even if its to curse

his name.

For some a tragedy can be an eye opener, for others it can be more reasons to attack him,

but no matter whether you believe or not, one thing is true, the world is the way it

is because it is, if you think about it, the world we asked for.

I think one of the biggest problems we have is that we think we can handle everything

on our own.

We hate being told what to do.

When problems arise we immediately try to resolve it in our own way and sometimes without

realizing it, we tend to push God aside.

We try to make life work without him.

I know it can be hard for a lot of people, especially if you been a victim of someone

else action and you blame God for that, remember that Jesus endured so much pain as well by

the people He died for over the free-will He gave them.

Listen we're living in scary times where things are only expected to get worse.

This world is not getting any better.

Life is going to get rough, Satan will do everything in his power to win your soul because

he knows the end is near.

And is sad to say he is winning a lot of people over by planting all these lies and doubts

into there heads.

Fight!

Don't give up!

Don't fall into the lies of the enemy!

Demonstrate to the world that you're a child of God and that your faith is stronger then

anything Satan can throw at you.

Even if you're struggling financially, even if you're going through a sickness, even if

you're feeling alone, even if you just lost a loved one, remind Satan who you belong to

and there's nothing in this world that can keep you from worshiping your father in heaven.

Remember you're not of this world and you have a God that loves you and is just waiting

for you to come back home.

Never stop worshiping God, never stop trusting in God because I promise you your faith will

be rewarded if not in this world then in the next.

May the Gospel give you life.

How Do Deaf People Make Music Videos? | ft. Jules Dameron - Duration: 13:48.

Jules: We just had a whole film--setup, with the lights, everything. Rogan: A good 10, 15 minutes.

Jules: He put up with my filmmaker requirements.

Rogan: Okay. That's our intro, that's fine.

Rogan: Hello, I'm Rogan and welcome. I have a special guest with me today.

Her name is Jules (Dameron). What do you do?

Jules: I make films. And everything else. Writing, acting, just started to do more theater stuff.

R: Exciting! So obviously, as you see from the title of this video today, I want to talk about

deaf people making music videos, how that works.

If you've been watching my channel for a while, you will know I made one kind of recently.

I thought we would want to discuss my process, how I made that, and her discuss her process.

She's made several music videos in her time.

So, see and compare the differences of that, and how we came up with the process.

J: It's really complicated.

I... Basically, the point of a music video is to understand the song itself. Like, okay.

How do you start to understand the song itself? You need to find everything about it.

Not just the lyrics, you also have to learn about the music, and the beat, timing.

R: What I did for the music video, I watched the karaoke video, with the words.

It has a moving bar that shows the beat, how long--if it's saying one word, like meeeee, it'll move slowly.

Then I know how long, how to sign it, that. I used that pretty much, I didn't even rely on sound, nothing.

I just watched the karaoke only. Then after I finished filming, I used in editing the same video,

I used that to cut and figure out how to match signs and words.

J: Also, music has its own properties. What's the feeling, what's the mood? That kind of thing.

So... And so to even assimilate that into the filmmaker, I'm deaf, so I'm like, okay.

And actually, doing the lyric karaoke videos are a good start. That's actually perfect, I do that sometimes.

But what I find most beneficial, I can't help myself. Every time I do a song, it's usually a famous song, usually.

They often already have ASL covers of those songs.

Understand, there's always someone who pronounces the words perfectly. Like... "Let it go, let it go."

You know, whatever, that pronouncing, then I lipread and see that's the exact timing.

Sometimes they mouth it to fit the energy.

Really, I tend to look for the singer, actual singer themselves if they filmed themselves,

then I can see how they emotionally deliver.

Basically, a song is like a puzzle for me. I hear it every time, I actually hear a little bit, but...

It's constantly, it's always different every time.

I listen to it, watch the video, stimulate myself, then I build and build a puzzle.

Every time I get a new piece of information, I add that and then by the end of it,

I finally have the full picture of the song. And that is a long process in itself.

R: Yes. J: But I don't mind doing it, because it's fun, but it's like...

R: I did look for the original music video, and that was not at all what I expected from the lyrics.

It was completely different.

I pictured it like, almost a love song saying don't worry about--a relationship song, and it is.

But the original music video is in a hospital. I didn't expect that from the lyrics.

Oh, that changes the mood, how to deliver that.

Examples of songs you've translated into music videos?

J: I've done a lot. R: Yes, a lot!

J: Each project is different, because... It depends on which one.

For "Let It Go" specifically, Amber (Zion) and Jason Listman and... Me.

We figured out the translation together, because we had to separate--we had to work together because there

were two characters playing that song, so we had to separate it into their respective parts.

Plus, I have a very specific idea myself too.

I think the key, really, is to understand what that song makes people feel. Like, take a famous song.

Deaf people don't know about that song, then we ask hearing people "what does this song make you feel?"

The goal is to make everything in the deaf lens to serve that feeling. Rather than literally.

Because if you do it literally, everything breaks down because we have a different culture. R: Right.

I'm very, very picky about HOW to translate anything, especially music because... It doesn't make sense--

For me, what makes a good translation is when the signed phrase fits perfectly with the sound, like butter.

It's like a beautiful relationship between the singing and the signing.

I like to think I make sure that it makes complete sense in a deaf perspective.

R: That is one problem I've noticed with some music video translations. They will go too far with the ASL.

It becomes abstract ASL, it loses all meaning, and you can't understand it at all. Like...

How are you supposed to understand that? Yeah. If it's separate, like ASL poetry or something, that's different.

Translation is key in all ASL music covers. Because translation takes everything the song's about,

and translates it to another language, another culture, carrying that over.

And many ASL music videos fail at that. Many will--I'm being honest, I'm being honest.

J: Unfortunately! I don't want that to be true, but it does. R: Unfortunately, yes.

A large majority of these are made by hearing ASL students. That, I don't consider those music videos.

I don't. I consider those... Practice...

J: I have to say that watching some of those videos are like nails on a chalkboard. R: Visual nails. Yes.

I'm fine if the ASL student makes it CLEAR that this is practice, just playing with the sign, learning sign.

Clear right there, I'm fine.

I have no problem with that, but if you try to call it an ASL cover or an ASL music video, no. Don't do that.

Even Spanish to English, English to Spanish, whatever, that is "easier" to translate...

But would you still do that if you were a student? No. You wouldn't.

So why is it okay to do that with ASL? J: Yeah!

R: Why? Is it because it's "not a real language?" No, it is.

It brings a lot of disappointment for us when we go, "oh!" and click on it... "Oh. Never mind."

People can't shake the fact that signing is beautiful with music.

R: It is. J: And, and yeah, that is good. That's why I think the deaf community should own that, you know.

R: It takes work! It takes work. J: Speaking from experience.

R: So what are examples of your favorite music videos that you've made?

I know, it's hard to pick, really I enjoy all of them.

J: I love many, I love every one like my baby. But the truth is, some of my most favorite...

"The Lazy Song," one of my favorites.

"Rolling in the Deep."

"Somebody I Used to Know."

And "Different Colors." R: Yes! J: I'm so proud of that one. I love that one.

R: I will go ahead and leave links to all of those down below so you can find them and watch. J: Thank you.

"The Lazy Song" is impressive, it's one take. All the way through, one take. No editing, so that's, wow.

That takes more work to actually memorize everything and not depend on editing.

J: That was fun. Oh my god, I'm so proud of that team.

R: So for music videos, you film and direct, but what about the performers?

How do you work with them for their work, signing and so on.

J: Oh my god, it's so much fun actually. Again, another challenging process. I myself as a film director--

I feel like it's different for me, because I have to memorize and study it, know it.

Then when I work with the deaf actor, I literally memorize the song to the point where I memorize the timings too.

Because... When I work with a deaf actor in front of the camera...

We do have music, but we also have someone cueing sometimes, it depends.

But if there's nothing, just the deaf person and me, I will just watch them

to make sure their translation fits the timing.

R: And the performer won't always be able to hear the music too. They don't know the song too.

So it helps to have someone else who knows it too to support them and make sure

they're hitting all the right times. J: Right. Right. Really, when I worked with Amber for "Rolling in the Deep"...

She hears nothing. Nothing.

Which means what? I basically just memorize the song with that, then I will talk with her a lot

about the translation, and sometimes the translation naturally falls into natural timing.

If you breathe and then sign, it matches timing. And I will watch, sing in my head while I watch her, Amber, sign.

That was interesting. I will just stare. I admit, it wore me out a little bit.

R: A lot of mental work! J: But the results! Oh my god. R: Yes!

J: And some can feel vibrations, so some sets, sometimes we have loud speakers to help

them know the count of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, you know, that kind of thing.

We did that with "The Lazy Song." The whole team for "The Lazy Song" was deaf. All of us.

And we had one deaf choreographer who understands the relationship to music with deaf people,

so that was cool using them for that. And really, we had that team of...

Six people, six or seven, that rough number of people all in the same shot.

So we had cues from all over, natural cues. They just went through it. It's really nice how it worked out.

A whole team helps! A team helps, and Spring Awakening.

It's full of timings for deaf people, and really, that's epic!

But you don't realize that we can do it, it's just figuring out timings, that's it.

R: It requires little adjustments of how things are done to make it work.

J: What I find naturally interesting is that music is like a heartbeat. And we have a heartbeat.

Deaf people have that, so we have that natural rhythm.

And I have one friend, Amelia (Hensley), an actor, and she hears nothing too.

But she can sign music so beautifully. Because she literally takes a breath and signs.

Like she breathes, breathing helps the beat with the music. It's cool.

Many people have asked me when's my next music video. I'm like... *sigh*

Do you realize how much work it is? It's not like I just film it, *snaps fingers* No.

I'm like yes, I mean, I want to do more. But it's just... Money, that. I have really high expectations,

and I want good quality, so it takes time. And I don't earn enough to keep that up.

I have to admit, it's hard for me to accept hearing people doing it.

I do accept it if it's done well, right, and respects deaf culture.

Let's be real here. If you are an ASL student, you've probably fantasized about doing an ASL music video

with your own signing, because you think signing is beautiful with music, and that's true!

That's fine. R: Yeah, that's fine.

R: If you make a music video, you have to be willing to play with the translations, play with how you sign things,

how you edit too. You have to play. Don't try to set in stone your first go. No, you have to adjust it.

It's a process. J: It depends on what you're willing to commit to.

But you gotta commit! You have to commit to this. It's a lot of work, and it requires a lot of thought.

And bottom line, include deaf people in your process.

Give them the opportunity first if possible.

It's a hard conversation, really. Do it right, do it better, do high quality, then I will stop complaining.

R: Okay, thank you for joining me today and discussing about our process for making music videos.

I hope you learned something from this video.

Let us know what your most interesting thing you learned from us today.

J: I want to know! R: Or what you want to see from us, what more you want to know about this.

Whatever. Leave them below.

What TOO MUCH EXERCISE Does To The Body (Especially For People OVER 40) - Duration: 7:11.

Hey, hey hey everybody, what is up?

My name is Sean Hadsall.

I'm a 46-year-old stubborn fat expert.

I'm also the creator of an innovative system called

the Over 40 Ab Solution and Inside Today Short Rapid Fat

Loss video.

I'm talking to people who are over 35 years old.

So if you're in your 40s, 50s, or 60s

and you want to quickly lose more belly

fat in only 12 minutes per day, stop by, pay close attention,

say hello, drop a comment below.

Let us know where you're from because inside this video

I'm going to introduce you to a 12-minute metabolic protocol

that is specifically designed to reactivate

declining hormones for people over 35 years old.

Now I personally use this 12-minute metabolic protocol

for the last 10 years to maintain six-pack abs.

Now I don't share that with you to impress you,

just to impress upon you how powerful this can be.

Here I am at 37 years old.

These are progress pictures.

For 10 years in a row all the way up to when I was 46.

This was just taken in June of this year.

Again not to impress you, but to impress upon you

how powerful this can be.

Now when you click or tap the link that's somewhere

around this video, you're going to go learn

all about my over 40 Ab Solution system,

that the backbone of these is this 12-minute metabolic

protocol.

So you read about my wife's inspiring story

as well, and how this helped her get rid of what

we called her menopause belly.

It's an inspiring story, to say the least.

It was a cancer journey that forced her

into her early menopause.

And this 12-minute metabolic protocol

practically saved her life.

And you can learn all about her story over at our website.

Now, what makes this so powerful?

The first thing is it uses compound movements.

So if you're out there doing crunches or sit-ups,

remember it takes 22,000 crunches

to burn one pound of fat.

Doing crunches or sit-ups does not burn belly fat.

It works stomach muscles.

It works your abdominal region, doesn't burn belly fat.

DVD workouts, cross fit, Insanity, P90X,

amazing workouts, but they use ballistic movements

that can be very hard on the body for people over 35 years

old.

And they're so long in duration.

Usually 60 to 90 minutes, that can wreak havoc

on the hormones and the metabolism of anybody who's

over 40.

So instead, we use compound movements

that use hundreds of muscle groups at once.

They're easy on the joints, but they activate all the muscles

in your body so that you get a double effect.

You get the effect of building lean muscle at the same time

you're going to quickly lose more belly fat

using these compound movements.

Now the second reason that this 12-minute metabolic protocol

is so powerful is the hormonal aspect.

See I'm going to share two easy tips that you

can use to potentially double the effectiveness

of these 12-minute metabolic protocols in just a second,

but it all has to do with the hormonal effect.

When you perform these specific movement patterns,

and you use the intensity levels and the rest periods

that I prescribe, your body will release adrenaline and growth

hormone, which are both catalysts to help you quickly

lose more belly fat.

In fact, research shows that it can potentially

increase your growth hormone levels 400% to 700%

from just one 12-minute protocol.

Now I'll post scientific references in the comments

below, and you'll see tons of research over at our website

as well.

So I always back up any claims that I

make with scientific published research.

So the second thing is adrenaline.

When you perform these movement patterns with the intensity

levels, and rest periods that I give you,

you release adrenaline.

Adrenaline then converts into several other hormones

that are responsible for releasing

fatty acids from your fat cells into the bloodstream where

they can be burned off.

AKA shrinking a stubborn fat cells or more fat loss.

So adrenaline and growth hormone combined together

at the same time, you get this one, two punch

with this 12-minute protocol.

Now the third thing is, is the afterburn.

You see research shows that when this is done properly,

like I show you inside my system,

that you can elevate your metabolic rate

for up to 48 hours afterwards.

Now, remember if you do an hour of cardio, just regular cardio,

you're going to burn a fair amount of calories

in that workout.

But when you're done, your metabolic rate

is going to be back to baseline or normal within 60 minutes

afterwards.

Well, think about this.

In only 12 minutes, you can potentially

elevate your metabolic rate for up to 48 hours afterwards.

Your body continues to burn fat and calories.

It's pretty powerful.

Now there's a couple different ways

that you can potentially double the effectiveness

of these 12-minute metabolic protocols.

The first way is to simply do it in a fasting state

or don't eat before.

So either wake up in the morning on an empty stomach

or wait three to five hours after a meal to do it.

This is what will allow your body

to release adequate amounts of adrenaline and growth hormone.

If you eat before exercise, it might be a healthy choice,

it might even provide your body with energy,

but it's common sense if you think about this,

do you want to be burning the food you just ate or do you

want to be burning belly fat?

So also when you eat beforehand, you raise insulin.

Now insulin is very anabolic, so it helps with building muscle.

But insulin is a storage hormone,

and when it's elevated, it prevents adrenaline and growth

hormone from being released because their antagonist.

So by fasting beforehand or waking up

in the morning on an empty stomach

and doing these 12-minute protocols,

now your body's insulin levels are very, very low.

And this is what allows the body to release

adrenaline and growth hormone.

The second tip is to not eat afterwards.

Most people think they need to eat immediately after exercise.

I was taught the same thing for years.

And I'm not saying that it's not a healthy choice.

I mean eating directly afterwards the muscles

are kind of like a sponge that's been run dry.

So they want to suck out nutrients.

So when you eat after exercise, your body

is going reabsorb those nutrients very quickly.

And if the goal is to build muscle,

this might be a wise choice.

But if the goal is to burn belly fat,

you could defeat the purpose and block your body

from accessing fat as a fuel source

because again after exercise if you eat, the minute you eat,

insulins elevated.

So that growth hormone and adrenaline

you just spent 12 minutes releasing now is blocked.

So instead, I recommend that you ride the fat burning

way for about 60 to 90 minutes after the 12-minute metabolic

protocol is to let that growth hormone

and adrenaline work its magic then go ahead

and have a balanced meal.

So hopefully that gives you a detailed explanation

of how my 12-minute metabolic protocol works.

I have been getting tons of questions about it,

and I want to address them in this video.

So somewhere around this video, depending

on the device that you're on, you'll

see a link to click or tap where you go to our website,

and you can get access to my Over 40 Ab Solution that

gives you the exact weekly plan, the exact 12-minute workouts,

the exact exercises to use.

And we also provide you with a full-blown diet

called the Hormone Optimization Diet Manual.

And obviously you've heard this statement,

you know abs are made in the kitchen, and it is true.

These 12-minute metabolic protocols

can work some magic on your body if you're over 35.

But if you eat like crap, it's not going to work.

It's that simple.

So we also provide you with a diet.

So if you got something out of this,

do me a favor tag your friend that can benefit.

Share it, like it, drop a comment if you have questions.

We're seven minutes in and in today's world time
