Google Slides Explore Tool - Duration: 6:42.

Hi, this is Brenda Lillie from the Educational Technology Department

I'm going to be showing you today one of my favorite tools.

Um, it's the Explore Tool in Google Slides

You can find the Explore tool in Google Docs and Google Sheets as well but we are going to focus on Google Slides.

The button looks like this

And, if you go to presentations. So, I pre-made this presentation

just to show you some of the Google Features of the Explore Tool.

(Um) I'm just going to start off with our first slide Title Page

You will notice there's no theme - no colors.

I'm gonna click on the Explore button down here in the corner

And just choose (just choose) a slide that looks nice.

I can come back and choose a different slide if I like.

If I choose a slide with an Image. Explore works with most slides...

It doesn't work with ALL slides, but it works with most slides.

I will give you some suggestions for what to do from Google Support itself.

Here's some suggested slides, I'm going to choose this one

Because I like the box overlay look.

So, the next we are going to do is insert our own image.

Here we're gonna search the web

(not our own) but I'm just gonna search for another slide to put in here

(because I like sticking with this slide theme)

And I'm gonna take a look here because

'cause it's saying, (see this is saying) that there are no suggested slides.

So, I'm gonna figure out why here in a sec.

So, I'm gonna take out some of our text.

Alright, here is one that I already chose a template for ...I mean...not a template

but a layout for.

but I just want to show you that even when you have a chosen layout,

It still gives you suggested layouts

I could choose a different one so...

Or Maybe, I like to keep with that same theme. I like that overlay

So, this one, I'm gonna choose this layout because this one is pretty important

So, if you don't see suggestions... like we didn't on the other slide.

To help suggested layouts... Use default slides or themes

that's just what I have going on...

Reduce the amount of text on your slides,

that's what I did with the other one

when I removed that amount of text...

I could go back and put that text back in after I have chosen a layout.

Just so you know. :)

Remove any shapes on your slides

again if it's not working, I can remove the shape on the slide

It'll give me some suggested layouts

And then I can go and put that object back in.

And, make sure that all images are at least 100x100 pixels.

So, the Explorer tool is not just about layouts though

and I want to show you what the other things that we can do with it are

So, other possibilities are...

web searches, images and google drive

So, let's take a look at that web search

So, If I'm here in web searches

and I want to show you

this other cool tool from somebody else

and put it in my presentation so that

people watching this can get this information

I type it in over here

and right at the top here

(Um) because I've searched it before, obviously (purple link)

are my web results

but it brought up some other web results

and I can go and take a look at those.

And then I want to come over here and

put that as a link...

Watch what happens when I click on link.

It already knows that I'm looking at these links

So, I can just apply that link right in there

That's pretty slick, I think.

And then, while I am here,

I'm going to change my layout

My next slide is images

I wanted to show what images looks like

in the Explore tool, because it's a little bit different

So I click on Images

So, If I go and I want to take a look at some of these

in a bigger screen,

Now, I've got a preview screen

that previews the images that were brought up.

and I think I will choose...

This one looks good.

And, insert that one...and

I want a different one, but I'm just gonna

You know I've looked through here already

I think I've got some pretty good "slides" here.

I'm just gonna click the plus button because I just want to insert the image

I don't need to preview it this time.

But again, look, I've got two pictures on my page

I'm going to go back to my Explore layouts

And choose a slide(layout) that represents those two images really well.

Here we go.

That puts them in a nice format

The last part of Explore

is exploring My Drive

So, if I know that I have something in my drive

and I need to get just a bit of information out of it.

I'm going to type it in here.

Click on Drive

And

Then I can open up the document from here.

So, it's just searching my drive.

Go get the piece of information that I want

to grab out of here.

Go back to my slides.

and insert that

and see what

layout they are giving me for this

let's choose a different one from here.

Sarahah: Anonymous app dropped from Apple and Google stores after bullying accusations

A wildly popular anonymous messaging app has been removed from the Apple and Google stores after accusations that it has been facilitating bullying.

But the companys chief executive denies the claims and says the app isnt meant to be used by younger teens.

Katrina Collins was appalled by the anonymous messages her 13-year-old daughter was receiving. One person said she hoped her daughter would kill herself. Others used extremely foul and offensive language.

The messages appeared on the Sarahah app, which was designed to allow people to leave honest feedback about colleagues and friends.

Although Collins daughter wasnt actually using the app, she saw the messages after a friend downloaded it and showed them to her.

Collins, who lives in Australia, put up a post on online petition site Change.org. She called for the app to be removed from two of the biggest mobile storefronts - Apples App store and Googles Play store.

The petition accused Sarahah of facilitating bullying and self harm, and quickly gained nearly 470,000 supporters. The app was then taken down from both the Apple and Google stores.

It appears the companies took action in response to the petition, although a Google spokesperson said we dont comment on specific apps and Apple did not respond to requests for comment.

Zain-Alabdin Tawfiq, the CEO of Sarahah, has disputed Collins allegations. He says the decision by Apple and Google to remove the app was unfortunate, but is very optimistic about reaching a favourable understanding with them soon..

The app has had an up-and-down ride since it was launched a year ago. It became an instant success - worldwide, more than 300 million users have created accounts.

Sarahah, which was developed in Saudi Arabia, topped Apples App Store in more than 30 countries in July.

Sarahah, which is named after the Arabic word for honesty, aims to allow users to receive anonymous constructive feedback. But Katrina Collins, the woman behind the petition, says it also facilitates cyberbullying.

If its happening to my daughter, she told BBC Trending, its happening to a hell of a lot of other kids out there as well.

A 14-year old from Grimsby in the UK recently spoke out about the disgusting messages she received on the app.

Tawfiq says the offensive word highlighted in Collins petition would be picked up by our filtering mechanism and prevented from reaching its destination.

He says as soon as we received this petition, we tried to run [the message] through Sarahah, and it didnt go through..

But Collins says the messages about her daughter definitely sent, and sent screenshots of the offensive messages to prove her point. She said: There were no filters at all that picked [them] up. They were all sent.

Since the petition launched, Tawfiq says his company has upgraded its filtering system to use artificial intelligence and machine learning. So basically if someone says kill yourself, then kill is a keyword.

But if someone says jump off a cliff, then now these robots will be able to detect that and block it as well. He also pointed out that the app is meant for people aged 17 and older.

BBC Trending set up an account and sent the phrases used in the messages to that account. None of the offensive language got through, although this may be because of the recent algorithm change.

How to protect children online. Be aware of what your children are doing on the internet.

The NSPCC has a series of guidelines about keeping children safe online. They promote the acronym TEAM: Talk about staying safe online; Explore the online world together; Agree rules about whats OK and whats not; and Manage your familys settings and controls.

Sarahah is not the first anonymous messaging app to be linked to online bullying. The Secret app shut down after criticism in 2015, and Ask.fm was linked to several teen suicides in 2013.

Another anonymous messaging platform, Sayat.Me, was taken down by its owners following the death of George Hessay last year. Hessay, a 15-year-old boy from the UK, took his own life after receiving abuse on the site.
