DON'T use Polite Japanese! Why desu/masu is so bad for learners. - Duration: 7:02.

Hello, pretty peoples.

KawaJapa no Kyua Dorii desu.

Today we are going to talk about why you shouldn't use polite Japanese, at least not from the beginning.

Now, most schools and textbooks start off using desu/masu Japanese: that is to say,

all verbs, all "A does B" sentences, end with "masu", and all copular sentences,

all "A is B" sentences, end with "desu".

Now, what's wrong with that?

Well, to begin with, desu/masu is not fundamental, basic Japanese.

It's a decorated form of Japanese, a form that adults use when talking to strangers

and superiors.

Japanese children don't learn it till they're nine or ten,

and then they don't use it very much.

But why does that make it a bad thing to learn?

Well, it's because it isn't basic Japanese, it actually conceals a lot of the basic

structure of Japanese.

To begin with, i-adjective-ending sentences in desu/masu form have desu popped onto the

end of them and that has no grammatical function – it's just a decoration.

Because i-adjectives don't use the copula (the desu or da).

They already have it built into them.

And starting to learn them with desu completely confuses people about the way i-adjectives really work,

and i-adjective-ending sentences are one of the three basic forms of Japanese sentence.

So this isn't a small problem.

However, it isn't the biggest problem, either.

The biggest problem is masu.

Masu is a helper verb.

It's a decorative helper verb.

You can put it onto the stem of any other verb to decorate it, to make it pretty,

to make it polite or formal.

However, if you believe that this is the fundamental form of the verb you are in the position of

having to deconstruct the masu form in order to reconstruct whatever other form you want to use.

And you're going to have to use all kinds of different forms.

And the masu form is not the base form of the verb – it's put onto one particular stem,

and even that isn't explained very properly.

I have seen people at intermediate level still very confused about certain aspects of verbs

simply because they've been taught the masu form first.

I've seen a very reputable Japanese-teaching website recommending that learners should

learn the base form of the verb – the dictionary form – plus the masu form

every time they learn a verb.

Now this also is a very bad idea.

At least it recognizes that you need the base form of the verb, but it's still a very bad idea

because in the first place it increases the amount of memorization you need for every single verb

but more importantly than that it reinforces this myth that the masu form

is some kind of special fundamental form of the verb, and it isn't.

It's just one of a large number of possible helper words that can be attached to the stem of any verb.

It's sometimes called a conjugation in Japanese, but it isn't a conjugation because there are

no conjugations in Japanese.

Conjugation is a European concept that's forced on Japanese by Western textbooks and schools.

I've done a 15-minute video that shows you how to fit any helper word onto any verb.

This includes all the so-called conjugations that the textbooks talk about together with

a lot of other forms that they don't call conjugations.

They all work in exactly the same way. They are all very regular.

Why are some of them called conjugations and some of them not?

Just because some of them happen to be words that in European languages would be conjugated.

So I think you can see that this is a very strange approach to Japanese.

Why can I explain in 15 minutes something that takes hours of class time to explain at a university?

Simply because I'm just telling you how the whole system works in Japanese terms.

And in Japanese terms it's very simple and very logical.

But if you try to force it to be a European conjugation when it isn't, you end up with

all sorts of random rules and exceptions – essentially because you've got to cobble it

to fit a system that it was never made to fit.

It's like trying to force a five-fingered hand into a four-fingered glove.

So why is it that the textbooks teach Japanese in desu/masu form as if that were the base form of the language

when even from their perspective masu is just one conjugation among others?

Well, I understand the thinking behind it.

It's that, when you get to Japan and you are talking to adult strangers and particularly

teachers or employers or people like that, you must use desu/masu form

or you will seem impolite.

However, there is nothing difficult about desu/masu form.

Once you understand how helper words fit onto the end of Japanese verbs

– and I can teach you that in 15 minutes – you can use masu.

Desu is even easier.

And if your Japanese is so rudimentary that you can't even do that,

you're not going to be having conversations,

and certainly not at a level where anybody's worrying about whether you are polite or not.

Look at it this way.

If somebody's comes up to you and says, "Tell me way to stay-shon" ,

well, that's kind of impolite,

but if somebody says that, you're not thinking

"Oh, what an impolite person!"

You're thinking, "Gosh, this person really doesn't know any English, does he?"

If he had even the rudiments of the language he would be able to say,

"Please can you tell me the way to the station."

And that is more complicated than using desu/masu form

after you've learned a little basic Japanese the natural and correct way.

So why do the textbooks keep on doing it? Well, perhaps it's because

their whole so-called conjugation rigmarole is so complicated

that they can't trust you to do it. I don't know.

Anyway, I'm starting a Japanese from scratch course

teaching it the organic way it should be taught.

Teaching Japanese as if it were Japanese and not some European language gone wrong.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are so successful at Liverpool because they 'cheat' ● News Now ● #LFC - Duration: 1:59.

Former Reds midfielder lifts lid on why duo are such a hit at Anfield.

The secret of the success of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at Liverpool has seemingly

been revealed – with a claim that they "cheat".

Salah has scored 26 goals already during a remarkable debut campaign following his £36.9million

arrival from Roma last season.

Mane, meanwhile, has become an integral part of the Reds' blistering attacking since joining

from Southampton for a similar amount the previous year.

The duo are expected to retain their place in the starting line-up when Jurgen Klopp's

side entertain Tottenham Hotspur in a mouth-watering Premier League showdown on Sunday.

And former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy, speaking on Sky Sports' The Debate show, reckons he

has pinpointed the reason why Salah and Mane are so devastating.

"What Salah and Mane do, and I've watched them several times this season, is they are

partly brilliant when they attack because they cheat a bit," he told Sky Sports' The

Debate.

"They don't track full-back really that often and when Liverpool break out they break

with pace.

"Those two particularly with their pace against Tottenham's full-backs could be

a problem.

"If Pochettino plays four at the back at Anfield and goes for Liverpool they are going

to be in trouble.

"If he plays five at the back it's different because you'll have Mane and Salah running

onto three and not running in behind full-backs."

Connectors & Conjunctions: And, Or, So, Because & Although - Duration: 9:10.

Hi everyone.

Today we're looking at some very common connectors that we use in spoken English.

They're words that will help you link your ideas and signal your thoughts when you're

speaking.

We're going to look at these connectors and check some that my students sometimes

muddle up.

The technical term for these words is conjunctions.

Conjunctions signal how our ideas meet so other people will understand us better.

So let's jump straight in and see them in action.

Kathy said you've got my next assignment.

Ah yes.

What is it?

Decisions, decisions!

I want you to write a report on the Boston project.

Uhuh.

I thought about asking Andrew to do this, or Jenny, or Sam, but then I thought, no.

You're the right person for this job.

I think.

Well, it looks great.

Err.

Here's the report we did on the Chicago project.

Uhuh.

You can use the same format, but this time the structure needs to be completely different.

The same format but a different structure?

Yes, And your report needs to be longer – although it should be more concise, so keep it short.

So longer but shorter?

That's right.

Don't get too detailed, but you need to go deeper than just the surface?

And you can use pictures if you want.

Well maybe not, because it needs to be serious… or funny.

Funny's good too.

This sounds hard.

Yes and Kathy wants you to get it right and do a good job, so take your time.

But she needs it on her desk in half an hour, because we're all waiting for it.

What?!

So anyway, I'm going to go get a cup of coffee… or maybe tea.

Jay was very indecisive there.

If someone is decisive, they can make decisions quickly and with confidence.

The opposite is indecisive.

And Jay used lots of connectors to link his ideas.

Let's start with an easy one: And.

It's really common and we use it to join words or phrases that are related.

Get it right and do a good job.

We use 'and' to add information, and when we're speaking, we use it to introduce new

or extra ideas.

And Kathy wants you to get it right and do a good job.

And your report needs to be longer.

And you can use pictures if you want… or maybe not

You heard our next connector there: 'or'.

We use 'or' to introduce possibilities.

It needs to be serious... or funny.

Funny's good too.

'Or' signals an alternative - A different option.

I thought about asking Andrew to do this, or Jenny, or Sam, but then I thought, no.

You're the right person for this job.

And you heard another connector there.

'But'.

We use 'but' to contrast ideas.

It means – hey, here's some different information..

You can use the same format, but this time the structure needs to be completely different.

The same format but a different structure?

The format of a document is its general design or plan.

And its structure is how its parts are organized and arranged.

So Jay was contradicting himself there.

When he told me he wanted a different structure, it was a surprise.

'But' signals surprising information – unexpected information.

So take your time.

But she needs it on her desk in half an hour.

What?!

Now, there's another connector that signals the unexpected: 'Although'.

Did you spot it?

And your report needs to be longer – although it should be more concise, so keep it short.

Again Jay was contradicting himself.

Concise means short and clear - giving only the information that's necessary.

So concise implies short Now, is there a difference between although

and though?

When they're connectors, no.

They mean the same thing.

Your report needs to be longer – though it should also be more concise, if that's

possible.

OK.

Now we're going to look at two connectors that my students sometimes confuse: because

and so.

So has several different meanings in English.

We'll have to make another video about its other uses, but here we'll look at how we

use 'so' as a connector – a conjunction.

Let's compare it with 'because'.

Keep it short because it should be more concise.

It should be more concise so keep it short.

These sentences have the same meaning – but notice the different structures.

In the first one the instruction comes first and the reason comes second.

In the second one, the reason comes first and the instruction comes second

So what's happening?

We'll start with 'Because..

'Because' answers the question why.

Why should it be short?

Because it should be more concise.

Oh, OK.

It should be more concise is the reason here.

After 'because' we put a reason.

'So' is different.

It comes in front of results, and it's about something that follows logically.

We've got a problem with this report.

What's that?

It's not concise enough.

So it needs to be shorter?

Yes.

Needing to be shorter is the logical result.

It's a consequence of the problem.

Another example.

Don't include pictures.

Why not?

Because it needs to be serious.

OK.

'Because' answers the question why?

The reason here is it needs to be serious.

Now compare that with this.

So tells us the result - the consequence.

The report needs to be serious and as a result we can't include pictures.

OK, now it's your turn.

I'll show you some sentences and you pick the right word.

First one.

Does 'because' or 'so' go here?

Let's see.

You need to get it right so take all the time you need.

Getting it right is important and consequently you should take your time.

Now what about this one?

Take all the time you need because you need to get it right.

Because comes before a reason.

Next one?

What's missing?

'So' or 'because'?

Don't get too detailed because it needs to be short.

Why shouldn't I get too detailed?

The reason is it needs to be short.

OK, one more.

This is the last one.

What do you think?

'So' or 'because'?

We want everyone to read it so make sure it's funny.

So it follows logically that it needs be funny.

Great.

That's it for this week.

But speaking of funny, at Simple English Videos we like it when things are funny because we

think learning should be fun.

We also believe you can learn a lot faster if you see English in action, so we create

conversations and stories to help you.

We publish videos every Friday, so if you've enjoyed this video, make sure you subscribe.

Bye now!

Love Potion Fails 💘 | Not So Valentine's Special | Nick - Duration: 2:57.

[ominous music playing]

OK, everybody in the world has been shot with hate potion.

If we're gonna save Valentine's Day,

we're gonna need to make our own love potion.

Just like real Cupids!

- This could be my big break. - Check it out!

All the potion recipes are right here in this Cupid manual.

Awesome, er, I should probably take the lead on this, you know,

as you guys know from my cake balls, I'm kind of a great chef.

Er, Kira, we wanna save the world, not make everyone sick.

Er... I'm doing it!

I'll help, I'm starting to crave celery!

I don't even know who I am anymore!

Um... OK.

- Two pints of yellow stuff. - OK.

- One part green. - OK.

Three parts pink and er... Mix in a pinch of that purple stuff.

Guys, how do we know this is gonna work?

er... Oh! We can test it on you and Kira!

Since you hate each other, if you start to like each other...

We know it's working.

You really think that's gonna... Work?

Kira... I dislike you slightly less than I did a second ago.

You know I don't totally dislike you but I still don't particularly like you.

[laughing]

OK, for some reason they switched voices!

I can sing opera now.

[singing opera]

[laughing]

OK, this is creepy.

Try two more parts pink and a little more of that purple stuff.

[music playing]

Now they think they're Irish dancers.

Wait, it says in the book "In case of Irish dancing,

- add more purple liquid." - OK.

Hey...

- I think I like you. - I think I like you too.

- Are we best friends again? - Only one way to find out.

- Yeah! - Yes!

Gimme that!

[burping]

[laughing]

Oh, I've missed you.

We did it, this formula can put everyone back to the way they were!

- Yes! - Yeah!

Now all we need to do is make five million gallons of this stuff

to shoot every person in the world.

- Ugh! - Ugh!

Oh, wait a second, guys...

This Cupid manual says we have to do all of that by the end of Valentine's Day

or the hate becomes permanent!

So we only have 27 hours?

[coughing]

That's not much time, is it?

[laughing]

MUSIC'S SO BAD NOW - STARRYSKY - Duration: 3:49.

Just dropping like this

Tons of accusations in the air

I'll be lying saying I don't care

You're no more the one we used to share

Don't you dare get your hair cut

Attached in the echo, getting so cold, trying to stay calm,

Should I make up for the sake of what you want from me ?

Should I feel guilty ?

You can't just let me write alone my own melody ?

And the time's passing by

As my mind's going down

Can you feed the flame, feed the flame in my eyes

So let's just be true tonight

So let's just be true tonight

I don't wanna fake, wanna fake who I am

Music's so bad now

Two options in my pocket, gotta choose which one to perk up

The john under the spotlights or La Joconde in the jungle. Cause

Everybody wants a lot of creativity, asking for new things and

originality, but they still listening to the same old stuff

Art is gonna be the thing I wish I'm keeping true. What is the

point of it if no one has a clue. I shall fake it and it really pisses me off

And the time's passing by

As my mind's going down

Can you feed the flame, feed the flame in my eyes

So let's just be true tonight

So let's just be true tonight

I don't wanna fake, wanna fake who I am

Music's so bad now

So I walk alone

Always on my own

Will I never ever be known without corrupting my soul

So I walk alone

Waiting for the dawn

For the end of the night

Yes I will!

Please do!!

I'm a big fan of you guys so thanks in advance for checking out my channel too!!

This was a wrecked car that we started with.

We first repaired the car correctly and then in our class and spare time cut the car open like this!

This is very educational.

People can learn a lot about cars from looking at this.

We made a totally Japanese car, inside and out!!

This car is painted, not wrapped???

Yes!

There is no vinyl wrap on here???

No.

We hand sanded each of these squares..

Each and everyone hand sanded??

It looks awesome!!!!

I bet it took a lot of time!!

Yes it did.

What is that on top of the car?

That's Toyota Castle!! LOL

Awesome!!

Everything on this car is hand painted.

It's amazing!

Every year you guys build something so incredible!!

Kendama shifter!!!! No way!

You can play it while sitting in traffic or waiting for someone!!

And this is real Kimono material on the seats??

Yes it is...

That's really nicely done!

You need to check out the back of the car and behind the seats.

We used a Kimono belt "Obi" to finish the design off.

Obi??

Look at all this Origami too!!

I hope we can make a nice car to show you next year too!

I hope so too!

Thanks and Thumbs Up!

I'd like to try this plastic cutter please.

Here I go!

Wow, its really easy to cut with this tool.

I don't really need to push very hard at all...

That's correct, normal pressure is fine.

The high speed vibration is what allows it to cut cleanly.

Let me try it this way too...

So this tool makes it easy to cut open headlights and tail lights to customize them, right?

Yes!

I get it and it is a great tool to have!!

Gontaya is definitely a fun company with interesting stuff!!

Thanks!

This is cool!!

You guys built this?

Nicely done!!

What's the name of your company?

Robutex, we are a rivet manufacturer originally.

Have you been in business for a long time?

Yes we have and I am the one who built this car!

Nice job! What engine are you using?

Stock Suzuki Wagon R engine.

This is a track car?

Yes it is.

We have run these at several different tracks like Fuji and Tsukuba.

Where is your company located?

Edogawa Tokyo.

This car is small enough to fit into he back of a HiAce van.

That's convenient, no trailer needed!

I bet this thing is a lot of fun!

Yes it is!

In some ways probably more fun than a regular car...

Yes and it's manual transmission too.

I hope I can get a chance to drive it one day!

You are welcome too!

Thank you very much!

It's popular here in Japan and this jacket is for you!

I love it!!

Cool!

We would be honored if you wear this jacket!

I love this thing!!

That was nice of them to hook me up like that!

I just met them for the first time too and this is a nice gift!

Thumbs Up!!

Banzai Racing always has a cool display!!

Thank you!

You're wheel designs are crazy!!

How the hell does this fit on a car??? LOL

It won't fit but you make it fit!! LOL

I think this wheel would look pretty good on my Hakosuka.

I agree!

This is Banzai original wheel design?

I guess you can say we made these wheels for your Hakosuka!! LOL

What about tires for these? are they available?

Front tires aren't a problem but the rears were until Liberty Walk started making super wide 14" tires.

Are those the 55,000 yen ($500) each tires that they are displaying?!?!?!

You got it!!!

55,000 Yen each!! wow!!!!

I really really like this truck you built.

I think this is my favorite car in all of the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Can you tell me about this machine behind us?

EZ Blust ???

What does it do?

It is a soda blaster but with a new twist...

of course there are other blasting systems but for the first time we have combined water with the soda too...

Wet blast?

Yes, water mixes with the soda.

The result with old wheels and other rusted and pitted items is amazing.

Really?

Yes! Really!

Is this a DIY type of item? Can individuals use this or pros only?

We intend this for individuals to use!

YES!!! That is awesome!! That's what I always talk about!!! DIY !

Try it yourself first!!

and this isn't very expensive either is it?

You will be surprised to hear that this machine is only...

54,800 Yen!

Its cheaper than one Liberty Walk tire even!!!!

We also sell the soda, or "Magic Powder" as we call it!

This type of blaster is used for old wheels and for taking old paint and bondo off a car very easily...

You are very knowledgeable Steve...

Its easier on the surface than sand blasting too...

Its also environmentally friendly!

Environmentally friendly... Car friendly... and friendly to your wallet too!!!!

That's why I like Banzai Racing!!! LOL

Its always nice seeing you and I really enjoy our time together!!
