Military analyst reveals EXACTLY whether Kim can reach Washington - DAILY NEWS - Duration: 7:36.

North Korea EXCLUSIVE: Military analyst reveals EXACTLY whether Kim can reach Washington

NORTH Korea is unable to "threaten the United States directly" with a nuclear missile,

a military analyst has claimed.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, CNN military analyst Cedric Leighton admitted

that the hermit kingdom lacks the ability to strike the mainland US due to its struggles

to "marry a small nuclear warhead with an ICBM missile".

He said: "The basic missile test that was conducted the other day is one that is very

different because it clearly showed a missile that could go a lot further than any of the

previous versions that the North Koreans had tested.

"It basically reached an altitude of almost 4,500 kilometres, that puts it at about 10

times higher than the orbit that the International Space Station is flying and really it's

higher than many satellites would be flying, so it has some significant issues that are

brought about by this.

"Even though North Korean seems to be saying that it did have a warhead on this particular

missile, there is no other indication in terms of radiation, in terms of telemetry, or in

terms of every other measure that we know about that they, in fact, did have a warhead

on there.

"If the Hwasong-15 had a warhead on it that was nuclear capable, and one would have to

assume that they would be miniaturising that warhead, that would obviously be a drag on

the missile and its ability to fly, and the weight of something like that could adversely

affect the range.

"So it could be a considerably shorter range that could potentially remove it from being

able to threaten the United States directly.

"It may still affect outlying parts of the United States such as the territory of Guam

or the state of Hawaii, but for the continental part of the United States, it may not pose

as much of a threat as many people believe right now.

"Most assessments here in the US are that the North Koreans have not quite been able

to marry the small nuclear warhead with the ICBM such as the Hwasong-15."

Mr Leighton discussed the hypothesis from South Korea's minister of reunification

who claimed that rapidly accelerating military programme from the rogue state could allow

it to strike the mainland US by the "mid-part of 2018".

He added: "Many people give a lot of credence to the statements by the South Korean minister

of reunification which basically said that the North Koreans would have that capability

by the early part or the mid part of the coming year of 2018.

"So I think what we should do as prudent observers of this event is to think that the

North Koreans are clearly working towards that goal, it is a publicly stated aim of

theirs to actually have a missile that can threaten the United States with a legitimate

nuclear warhead on it, and that kind of threat has to be taken seriously."

Despite the seemingly imminent threat imposed on the world by despot leader Kim Jong-un,

the military expert admitted that Pyongyang does not come close to the might of the US,

China and the former Soviet Union.

He declared: "The North Koreans do not have the type of arsenal that the Soviet Union

used to have or that the Chinese used to have, and they certainly can't compete with either

of those countries in terms of their modern-day weaponry.

"They also cannot compete with the United States in terms of the quality and quantity

of the nuclear weaponry.

"North Korea is basically already part of that nuclear club but the mechanisms that

they exercise for their command and control of their nuclear weapons are not as robust

and not as developed as those of other nations."

After the rogue nation tested their most powerful missile yet, there were rumours that the test

came as no surprise to South Korea that immediately retaliated with their own launch - Mr Leighton

confirmed that Asian nations, as well as the US, had received reports of an impending provocation

from the hermit kingdom.

He went on: "So a few days before the missile test there were reports that were primarily

spoken about in Asia, especially in Japan, and a bit in South Korea that there were indications

that the North Koreans were getting ready to conduct a missile test.

"Although this is something that would certainly remain classified within the United States

government, it stands to reason that they also had an indication that this would happen.

"However they chose not to publicise that because in essence I think they did not want

to egg on the North Koreans and they wanted to see if the intelligence was actually correct

and sometimes with North Korea there are a lot of what I guess one could call false-positives

when it comes to intelligence and it becomes a very challenging intelligence target.

"So in the United States at least we try to be very careful with how we assess intelligence

pertaining to North Korea.

"So I'm certain that policy makers here in the US were aware that the North Korean's

were probably planning to do something.

"There were a lot of questions in the run up to this latest missile test as to why there

had been such a long period of time between the previous missile test and the one that

just happened.

"Based on North Korean statements and general North Korean behaviour, I think most people

including myself, looked at this as not an indication as a willingness of the North Korean's

to talk, but instead a timeframe in which the North Korean's could better prepare

themselves for these tests and conduct a more successful test than they otherwise would

have been able to do."

After the sixth missile test from the hermit kingdom, Japan not only threatened to shoot

down further missiles that prime minister Shinzo Abe believed posed a danger to Japan,

but his aggressive rhetoric against Kim Jong-un appeared to have shifted another gear after

his meeting with Donald Trump - the military analyst believes Mr Abe's threats could

account for this week's missile trajectory.

Mr Leighton stated: "I think it's a very likely scenario that prime minister Abe's

rhetoric in relation to North Korea have been a factor in not only the way in which North

Korea launched the missile but also the way in which they timed that launch.

"I think the way in which the Japanese are reacting to North Korea provocations makes

it very clear that they were intent on shooting down the next missile that flew over their

territory.

"So the North Korean's, I think wisely, decided to demonstrate their capability but

to do it in such a way that would keep the missile from flying over Japanese territory.

"According to the Japanese they violated their exclusive economic zone, but that's

not the same from an international law standpoint as either violating either the territorial

waters of a country or the actual landmass of a country.

"So in this case the North Korean's kind of went up to the edge to let it be known

that they have the capability without actually making a supreme provocation such as a direct

overflight of the country of Japan."

Germany chief admits Emre Can has '60-80% chance' of quitting Liverpool for Juventus ● News Now #LFC - Duration: 1:51.

Emre Can has been tipped to leave Liverpool for Juventus.

The Germany midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and there is no sign

of an extension being agreed.

He can speak to foreign clubs in January and Juventus are among those interested.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been touted as a possible destination for another German

midfielder, Leon Goretzka, whose deal at Schalke expires in the summer.

And Germany general manager Olivier Bierhoff believes there is a good chance he could land

in Turin, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Bierhoff said of the pair: "In this time England is the top spot for those players

and after the Premier there is also the Spanish league as an option.

"For sure both Emre Can and Goretzka could be successful in Serie A.

"Can is a number 6 and is physical, his way of playing is perfect for Italy.

"However, unless Inter Milan returns to the top of Italy, if one of these players

had to choose Italy, he would only do it for Juventus."

Asked for the likelihood of a move to Italy for the pair, Bierhoff responded: "For Goretzka

there is not much of a chance, perhaps not even 20%.

"Emre Can, I think he has a lot more, I would say 60-80%."

How much can I get pre-approved for a mortgage - Duration: 6:45.

Welcome to Homebuyer's School

brought to you by Brookfield Residential.

Hi everyone and welcome to another edition of Homebuyer's School. Today I'm joined by

Mujtaba Syed, a Mobile Mortgage Specialist with TD Canada Trust. And today the

question we're gonna answer is -and one that's very, very I guess, a very popular

question is, "How much can I actually get pre-approved for a mortgage?" So Mo, how

much, if I go right now to talk to you or a mortgage specialist, what's the maximum

I can get pre-approved?

That's a really good question Karl, so technically what

we look at is we'd look at a bunch of different factors when we're looking at

the amount that you can get pre-approved for. The most important thing we do

look at your credit score, now a credit worthiness is an important part of the

approval process, so there are certain criterias and guidelines we like

your credit to be at to see maximum - minimum approval amounts. I'll try to

explain a little bit more.

So if your Beacon score is technically

above 680 where we want to be at,

we want your TDS, which kind of

stands for Total Debt Ratio. So a total

debt ratio is what we take, is we take

your income, we take your monthly

obligations, plus the new monthly

obligations of your home you're looking

at buying, which is going to be your

mortgage payment, property taxes,

utilities. We want it to be around 44% of

your income, and the reason why the banks

want to be able to do that is we want

the extra - 56% to be available

just in case you might need it. We don't want you to be house poor for

sure. So if you're Beacon score is above 680 we can go to a maximum 44% of

your TDS. But unfortunately if it's lower

than 680, we want to be at 42% of TDS

and these are just bank account and guidelines that we take a look at.

We also look at something called GDS which is your Gross Debt Ratio which is just

technically the housing cost we talked about. So the housing cost once

again is just your mortgage payments, your property taxes, and your utilities

that technically could be part of the home. We want that to be once again if

your Beacon scores around 680, we want

that to be around 39% which is the maximum.

Now, you know if your Beacon scores less than 680, we unfortunately

can't go more past 35% once again, just

bank account of rules to kind of see

exactly how much you get pre-approved for.

When you're talking about, so let's step back a bit here.

What is a Beacon score? Just for those who don't understand.

Absolutely, so a Beacon score is a credit score and it's

a whole bunch of different things that combine into making like a "risk

rating" for the bank. So what we do we can look through a whole bunch of different

situations. We could look at how long

you've opened your credit bureau,

what kind of debts you have on your

credit bureau, how you make your payments,

if you switch your job frequently we

want to be able to show stability. So if

you switch jobs often or you

move addresses often, that could actually

result in a lower score, or we want to show

stability, we want to show comfort so

technically a score where I like to explain to my clients is just a

statistic. So once when we say someone has a beacon score of 680 it just means

to the bank that 1 out of 680 people were most likely default on a loan

compared to someone who might have a beacon score of 700, so 1 out of 700 is

less riskier to the bank compared to 1 out of 680 or even 1 out of 600.

So that's how the bank's look at it. It is a little bit more complicated, a

little complex, but it's just a brief idea of who you are as a person

technically, how you come across to the bank.

Does a previous mortgage affect your Beacon score as well?

Absolutely yeah. A previous mortgage

could definitely affect and depending on your repayment, how you

made the payments, the amount, it could definitely impact in a positive way

or it could impact in a negative way.

Does a- would it would you recommend

then having let's say you know, let's say you're in the process of selling a home

and looking to buy another home, either another home or transitioning out of

that, in your opinion would it be better to make sure you sell your home first or it

doesn't really matter?

Yeah, to me I don't think it really

matters because when we actually look at the pre-approval process we

can factor all that into the application. We can look at what makes the most

sense for you. If it makes the most sense to you because you feel like

selling based on your financial obligations, we can look into that. We can

also look in getting your pre-approved or approved for a mortgage by currently

holding that property as well. A lot of people think they want to sell but then

decide that they might want to turn into an investment property or rental

property, there are many, many different ways we can work on to the

application, there is no just one way to kind of do that.

One question I always wanted to know is "should I max out in terms of how much I

can get pre-approved for?"

Yeah, so once again it just depends on where

your comfort level is. If you think that that's your dream home and you're very

comfortable with it and you see yourself moving in there and living in there for

a very long time you might consider buying that house, it might be a little

bit close for maximum living, but you might know that your income potential is

just gonna keep on getting more and more, and that's something that definitely you

could speak to your specialist about. I always tell my clients as long as you're

comfortable with the payments make sure you do the monthly budget, those monthly

obligations, and see exactly where that fits in based on your lifestyle. If that

makes sense for you based on your lifestyle, it's a comfortable payment,

you don't feel you're stretched or you don't feel that it's a little

bit too much for you, that's the ideal place to be in my opinion.

Great, do you have anything else to add?

No I think that's technically it. Once again we

just want to reiterate that, just really sit down with your specialist, talk about

your obligations, talk about your financial situation, talk about where you

see yourself in the future, all that could have a really big impact on your

decisions today. We want to be able to look into the future and see does this

make sense in the future as well, not just today.

Teenage Girls Want To Stop Rapes – Now Their Brilliant Invention Can Save Lives - Duration: 2:35.

Teenage girls want to stop rapes – now their brilliant invention can save lives

The music at the party is loud.

To hear what her friend is saying, the teenage girl turns her head around, removing her eyes

from her drink for a split second.

Just enough time for someone to slip something into her glass.

A guy has been observing her and waiting for the moment that she would look away.

A little while later the girl starts feeling unwell and stumbles on her way to the restrooms.

That's when she is assaulted.

Many rape cases begin with the victim being drugged, something Carolina, Susana and Victoria,

three high school students, wanted to put an end to.

They decided to put their heads together and came up with an invention that would reveal

perpetrators before they are able to strike.

Susana Capello, Carolina Baigorri and Victoria Roca haven't even finished high school yet

but can already take credit for an invention that could save lives.

"Smart Straw" is a straw which reveals if there are any drugs in your drink, warning

any potential victim of being drugged and preventing them from an attempted rape.

"It's a real and growing problem, our goal is to reduce the statistics," Susana

Capello tells Miami Herald.

GHB and ketamine are the most common so-called "date rape drugs", and often slipped into

potential victims' drinks, leaving them passed out and making them easy targets for

rapists.

Susana, Victoria and Carolina's goal was to find a way that would reveal whether a

drink has been spiked, since it can be difficult to keep an eye on your glass every second

at a party.

As young teenage girls, Susana, Victoria and Carolina were in tune with how difficult it

could be for women when being offered drinks at a bar.

They thought it could be valuable for women to have a sure – and yet discreet – way

to know whether someone was trying to spike their drink.

The result was a straw that changes color to blue if placed in a drink that has GHB

or ketamine in it.

"We were really passionate about this so we kept on pursuing it," says Susana.

The hard work paid off.

The three girls have now won first prize in the Miami Herald's competition The Business

Plan challenge.

Their next goal is to patent the straw so that they can mass-produce the invention,

saving more lives.

Young people are our future and it's people like Susana, Carolina and Victoria that help

make the world a safer and better place.

Please share to praise their hard work in preventing rape.

How YOU can help preserve the Avro Lancaster! - Duration: 1:51.

The Avro Lancaster was one of the largest and most important British and Canadian aircraft

to fly during the Second World War.

With a payload of up to 22,000 pounds, a range of 2,500 miles and a cruising

speed of 210 miles per hour, this aircraft played a major

role in the allied bombing command in the European theater of the conflict.

A total of 7,377 Lancaster aircraft were produced, including many that were produced in Canada.

However as of today only 16 of them have survived, 8 of them in Canada: 1 in Nova Scotia, 2 in

Alberta and 5 of them in the Province of Ontario.

One of the five Lancasters in Ontario is named FM104 and right now it is sitting on a storage

facility in a partially restored condition.

This artefact of Canadian history is owned by the city of Toronto and the mayor's office

has already put a request for it to be given away since city is unable to find a suitable

place for the aircraft.

In light of this the Canadian Museum of Flight, located in Langley, British Columbia would

like to acquire this Lancaster in order to preserve it and have it on display for the

millions of Canadians that live in the west coast.

The museum has already sent an official proposal to the city of Toronto with our offer to acquire

and restore the Lancaster FM104, however we would also like your support in order to preserve this

aircraft, both a symbol of freedom and as well tribute to all Canadians and allies who

served during the war.

If you agree with the plan of the Canadian Museum of Flight to preserve the Avro Lancaster,

please sign our petition in the link attached to this video and also do not forget to tell

all your friends about the petition so that we can preserve this important piece of Canadian

history and have it available for the Canadians who live in the west coast, because at the

end of the day this is part of our common history and British Columbia

would like to do its part in preserving it.

Why You Can't Win an Internet Argument - Duration: 4:54.

[INTRO ♪]

Let's be honest: we all try to win arguments on the internet,

even though we know it's pointless.

Sometimes when you're scrolling through your Facebook or Twitter feed,

bad opinions and misunderstandings just jump out at you,

and you have to set your friends and followers straight.

But if it seems like your impeccable logic

is always met with hostility and digging in—

well, that's exactly what's happening.

Psychologists have put a lot of thought into how people argue—

both online and off—

and they've found plenty of reasons why people rarely change their minds.

Part of the problem is that correcting someone

can actually strengthen the memory and influence of their original belief—

the one you think is clearly wrong.

It's known as the backfire effect.

A study in the Journal of Consumer Research in 2005

demonstrated this by giving 335 people a list of science facts and myths,

then clarifying right afterward which were true and which weren't.

30 minutes later, they asked half of the subjects which things on the list

were true, and they were pretty good at separating myth from fact.

But when they tested everyone else 3 days later,

that group made a lot of mistakes.

Specifically, they recalled a lot of the "false" statements as "true" —

but not the other way around.

Psychologists think that's because we use how familiar something is

as a guide to whether it's true.

And all you need to do to make something familiar is to repeat it.

This effect doesn't seem to always happen

when people's false beliefs are corrected.

Some studies have failed to find a backfire effect,

especially when the topic was political.

But pointing out exactly how wrong your Facebook friend is

often involves repeating their false beliefs.

And when you do that, it's possible that the backfire effect

just makes them more sure they're right.

Another challenge is that we all suffer from confirmation bias:

we can look at the same evidence but come to different conclusions

based on what we believe is true.

If evidence confirms what you already believe,

it jumps out at you and you pay attention to it.

Meanwhile, we tend to gloss over contradictory evidence

and just forget about it.

A 2013 study with more than a thousand participants

showed this with political beliefs.

People were shown the results of a fictional study about gun violence,

and were asked whether the evidence supported gun control.

But since the study was made up, the researchers made two versions—

one in which the data were in support of control measures,

and another where the data were flipped.

When people were then asked whether the study they read

supported gun control, the data barely made a difference.

If the person supported gun control, they thought the data did, too,

and vice versa.

Ironically, the researchers found that being better at math

made this effect worse.

You'd think people with better math skills would be more likely to

interpret the data objectively, but instead,

they tended to recalculate the information in their heads

in a way that justified their existing belief.

So even if you've got some super-solid evidence in support of your position,

showing it to those who disagree

might actually lead them to the opposite conclusion.

But if, despite all of this, you still find yourself thinking that

you just have to try to change someone's mind because dangit,

they are wrong on the internet, there is some good news:

There's also research on what might work.

One group of researchers analyzed a whopping 12,000 arguments

on a subreddit forum called "ChangeMyView" to see what the arguments

that successfully changed people's minds had in common.

They found the most effective tactic was to pick wording that was

unlike that of the other side, maybe because unfamiliar wording

was a sign that the arguments were new information.

Like, if someone's arguing that Kirk was the best starfleet captain

because he led with his gut instinct,

pointing out all the times Kirk's instincts have put the crew in danger

might not be that effective.

Instead, you might have more success arguing that

Picard always opted for the peaceful solution.

That kind of shift in language is more likely to change the person's mind,

whereas using really similar wording— especially quoting them directly—

is seen as nit-picking.

The researchers also found that when the original poster

used the word "we" instead of "I" to describe their position,

the arguments were less likely to change their minds—

probably because they were more entrenched in their viewpoint.

And if the debate went back and forth more than 4 times,

it wasn't likely to go anywhere.

So if you're still arguing on that thread from weeks ago,

you might just wanna walk away.

Even with the more successful tactics, though,

very few people were convinced to change their minds.

And a lot of people are going to this forum

because they say they're open to change!

So no matter how strong your arguments are,

it's probably worth picking your battles.

Don't get too discouraged when you can't change the other person's mind—

we're just wired that way.

And remember: all of this applies to you, too.

So every once in a while, you might want to stop and reevaluate

the positions that get you so fired up.

Because some of those arguments might not be

as strong as you think they are.

Artificial Intelligence Solved This Audio Illusion. Can You? - Duration: 5:12.

Now, did you hear what I was saying?

Clearly enough that you could, say, write it in dow the comments?

If so, you just experienced a phenomenon called

The Cocktail Party Effect.

You can hear me while there's people talking right next to us or if there's a jazz band

across the room.

This is because of selective attention – our ability to focus on one particular thing while

tuning out our surroundings.

And it's the same effect that allows us to separate the vocals from the background

music in a song

This comes so naturally to us, but machines find these tasks extremely hard.

To a machine, a voice singing is just another track in a song that isn't easily discernible

from the piano track or the violin track or the harmonica track.

So how do you train a machine to separate voices at a party or vocals from a song like

people can?

Well, the answer lies in algorithms and lots of data.

Recently, researchers developed an algorithm that can identify the vocals in multiple songs.

And this is thanks to breakthroughs in machine learning – a method used in artificial intelligence

to allow machines to learn by analysing data.

To do so, researchers used a deep neural network – these networks are software inspired by

how our brain works.

They can learn using a method called deep learning, a kind of machine learning technique

that works through a series of layers.

An input layer, an output layer and middle hidden layers.

These hidden layers are where the magic happens.

And to train an artificial neural network, you have to feed them a ton of data – just

like us, the more they know, the better they can learn.

So researchers trained their neural network by giving it 50 songs.

They let the neural network try to separate the vocals and the non-vocal components (the

other instruments), and compare its results with the correct answer – which is the particular

song already separated into the different components.

Every time the neural network gets closer to the correct result, it's rewarded.

So it improves with each run.

It was then tested with 13 new songs, and it correctly separated the vocals from the

background music in each one.

It taught itself to tell the vocals apart from the other instruments.

What separates deep learning from previous types of machine learning is this layered

structure, which is modelled specifically after the cortex, the wrinkly outer layer

of the brain.

It's the part responsible for higher-order brain function like sensory perception, cognition,

spatial reasoning and language.

Basically it's the part that makes you...

different from a lizard.

It's made up of 6 layers, and different aspects of processing happen at each level.

For example, when you see an apple, the first layer might identify the color red, the second

layer detects the round edges, and so on until finally the last layer puts it all together

and says hey, that's an apple!

Deep learning software tries to imitate this hierarchical structure of neurons in the cortex.

The first few layers of a deep neural network learn to identify simple patterns, like single

units sounds.

The next layers learn to recognize more complicated patterns, like words.

Eventually, the result is that extremely complicated patterns like the entire vocals of a song

can be recognized and distinguished from the other instruments.

This layered process is at the heart of deep learning's success.

Starting with simple ideas and making them become a more and more like a generalized

concept seems to capture something fundamental about intelligence.

Humans used to have a clear advantage in pattern recognition, but in 2015 a deep neural network

beat a human at image recognition for the first time.

This means we're able to make better and more sophisticated machines that can master

tasks we thought were unique to humans.

Machines are helping doctors make better diagnoses and robots are learning to cook by watching

YouTube videos.

And when a robot can learn to cook by watching YouTube videos – that makes you question

what it really

means to be human.

How Much Can Bicycles Change Communities? | World Bicycle Relief On GCN - Duration: 9:31.

- It's World Bicycle Relief Week here on GCN,

helping to change lives through the power

of bicycles.

In the second of our series, we follow Chris,

a farmer, as he goes about his daily routine

now with the help of a Buffalo Bike.

(Zambians singing)

- Today, we are in Zambia on a farm,

Christopher's farm to be exact.

He is in the background somewhere milking cows,

which he's been doing for an hour already.

It's 5:30 a.m. and I think he's going to

give me a go as well.

So, let's go on in.

(rooster crows)

(milking)

Christopher, thank you for having us at your farm.

- No, it's no problem.

- We're going to follow you for some of this morning.

So first, is that you're going to let me

have a go at milking, briefly.

What's the plan after that?

Are we going to load the bike up with the milk

and take it to the distribution centre?

- Yes, yes, that's the plan.

That we now start milking, and we load the bike

with the milk on the bikes, and then we deliver.

- Okay, I think we're going to see if I'm

strong enough to load the milk into the bike, as well.

It sounds like it's going to be very heavy.

- No, no, no, not very heavy.

I mean you look strong enough. (laughs)

- Not for you, yeah. (laughs)

Let's go and have a go.

- (speaks in foreign language) with milking.

- (laughs) He's laughing.

Like, yeah right.

- Uh-oh (laughing)

- It's nervous.

- Yeah it's nervous.

- Not as nervous as I am, but he's still nervous.

She, she.

- Okay, good to go.

(speaks in foreign language)

- Okay.

- Right.

- Okay.

So, from the top?

- Yeah.

Going down.

(milking)

- All right, we're off.

- Yeah.

- Oooh, spray.

What am I doing?

- Yeah, this is going to be a long one.

- (laughs) All right.

Come on, I've got to least ...

Oh .

Nope.

It's not happening out of any other one.

- Oh, yeah?

Okay, I think that's good for-

- Yeah, I think that's enough.

We'd better let your man get on with it.

(loud milk squirting)

(laughing)

Right I think all nine cows how now been milked.

A small part by me.

So we're ready to now put the very heavy urn

on to the back of the bike.

- Okay, you ready?

- I think he's gonna trust me to do it.

- Alone?

- Well, we'll see.

How heavy is it?

- It is quite heavy.

- There we go.

- You gonna need some help?

- I'm trying not to drop it.

- Okay, let me help.

- Got it?

Yeah, then we're going to ride to the collection point.

Chris is going to ride this bike, obviously.

His potentially 40 litres of milk could

fall all over the place if I'm on the bike.

- I think this should be good enough.

- Yeah, look's solid.

Right, let's go.

(uplifting music)

Before the Buffalo Bike, this 4 kilometre journey

would be done twice daily on foot.

So two people, one on either side of the urn.

Once in the morning, and again in the afternoon.

Or sometimes there'd be three people around two urns

when productivity is particularly high.

For other farmers, that journey can be

four times the distance.

It'd be quite a trick even without the milk.

And you can imagine what it's like to walk

with that extra 40 kilogrammes.

The bike has cut the journey time

by well over 50%.

And that makes a huge difference in time and energy,

but also ensures that the milk stays fresh.

(mosquitoes buzzing)

Oh, we've arrived.

We'll park the bikes up.

I'm gonna help Chris stabilise his bike.

(man speaks foreign language)

(laughing)

His friends are laughing at him.

At the collection point, we have to wait our turn

to get the milk tested.

If it's all good, it's then poured into a large container,

at which point Chris is paid for the amount

that he's brought in.

This is the first of two trips done each and every day.

So I think Chris and I are just about ready

to ride back.

We'll just let you know there are over 100 small farms

here in the small province of Palabana.

Over here you can see that there are

lots of Buffalo Bikes being used.

But here's somebody doubling up on the back here.

Couple of containers.

That must have been very heavy there on the way in.

But this is the difference these Buffalo Bikes have made

to the local community.

Because they're all riding in instead of walking.

(Zambians singing)

We're going to leave, briefly, our journey with Chris,

because I wanted to tell you about this very cool

charity and community.

This is called Chikumbuso, and it's been around

since 2005.

It was set up to help people in need.

So anyone from young vulnerable people through to

orphans, through to widows, and grandmothers as well.

And for the more senior people that arrive here,

they are taught how to crochet and how to sew,

and how to make some extremely cool products

out of recycled materials.

I, for example, have literally just purchased myself

possibly the coolest laptop case you will ever find.

For the younger ones, they have set up an in-house school,

which caters and educates children

right the way through from kindergarten to grade seven.

However, what they were finding was, that when they

left here and they went into the senior schools,

they were much further afield and sometimes

they weren't able to get there on foot.

And that is why 10 years ago they started

working with World Bicycle Relief,

in order to provide those students with the Buffalo Bikes

so they could finish what they'd started.

Right, we're back.

So I think Chris,

- Yeah?

- Time to wash the milk can.

- Definitely.

- One of your workers is going to do that.

We do that over here.

- We'll do it just here.

- And then Chris has got lots of work to do today with

his poultry section of the farm.

- Yeah.

- And also, what is the other thing you have to do today?

- The pigeonry we have to run see.

- Pigeonry as well?

- Yeah.

- He wants to go pigeons as you can see.

And then we'll be back to milking later on, or they will be.

Then back down to the ...

- To taking, delivering milk.

- Yeah?

- Yeah.

- Yeah, long day.

- Right, let's get this off.

Now if you're wondering why Chris' bike is

bright green or bright yellow, it is because

this is part of a special project called

the Conservation Agriculture Scaling Up Project.

Which was done in conjunction with the European Union,

Zambian government, and the Food Agricultural Organisation.

They have provided farms across Zambia with a total of

four and half thousand of these

special coloured Buffalo Bikes.

Chris, I know, is very grateful to have this

because he has used different bikes in previous years.

But the problem was that with those huge loads of milk

on the back, they broke pretty quickly.

Whereas this Buffalo Bike, which is of course

built to withstand loads of up to 100 kilogrammes

plus the rider himself, this is more than capable

of doing multiple years of journeys to and fro

with those loads of milk on the back.

We only followed Chris for the first half of his day.

It certainly wasn't easy just doing that.

And of course, farming is a seven day a week job,

arduous in these conditions then, to say the very least.

Even with the bike.

Now although Chris was fortunate enough to be

donated his bike, and all students receive theirs

free of charge,

most farmers will in fact pay for them over time

with a local employee purchase programme.

And that is a really important point, the

sustainability of World Bicycle Relief as a charity.

And the farmers are also finding that their

Buffalo Bikes are incredibly useful for another purpose.

And that is to bring their produce down to local markets

like this one is Palabana.

The donations that you have already made for the bikes

that have been given to people here in Zambia

have already made a huge difference,

but we can do so much more for them.

We would love to raise even more money than we did

back in 2016 this time around.

There is the incentive that Matt and Cy are going to

ride across London on a 5 kilometre stretch

wearing nothing but swimming costume.

But apart from that, the incentive is right here

behind me and with Christopher, who we've been

following today.

So a very big thank you to him,

and to all of you who've already made donations.

If you'd like to do so right now you can just

go into the description below,

follow link, and all of the details

will be right there in front of you.

If you would like to see Lizzie, meanwhile,

who we follow as a student on her daily routine,

you can find that video just down there.
