Can smoking weed makes you creative? Weed and its effects - Duration: 3:13.
Hello Friends, today we will talk about effects of weed.
Does Smoking Weed Make You More Creative?
A new study on the effects of smoking marijuana and its relation to creativity has some interesting
results.
The study consisted of 412 marijuana users (they couldn't find 8 more?) and 309 non-users,
and they attempted to answer the question: Does smoking marijuana make you more creative?
Emily LaFrance, the co-author of the study and graduate student at Washington State University,
says she first became interested in the topic when she noticed that a lot of her favorite
artists admit they smoke marijuana.
"This cannabis use was commonly thought to have been a cause of the creative success
of many artists," she explains.
"I began to wonder about this commonly held idea – are cannabis users really more creative
than non-users?"
The study is called "Inspired by Mary Jane?
Mechanisms underlying enhanced creativity in cannabis users" and was published in
Consciousness and Cognition.
It examined the participants over a variety of areas including psychological tests, and
measuring creative works and achievements.
Some major points from the study include: • Cannabis users were more likely to be
extroverted and open to new experiences.
• Cannabis users reported higher levels of artistic creativity, but not a higher amount
of creative achievements or completed works.
• Cannabis users performed better on a convergent thinking test (which tests creative problem
solving).
Overall, they did find that those who use marijuana are more creative than their counterparts
who do not use it, but when they dug deeper they made a startling discovery.
When the scientists included the personality traits into the data, they realized that these
traits on their own could determine whether a person is more open to using marijuana,
as well as drive a tendency to be more creative.
"Cannabis users may be more creative than non-users," LaFrance says, "but this is
not because using cannabis has increased their creativity."
She goes on to explain that it's the fact that marijuana users "are more open to experience
than non-users, and this openness to experience is associated with both cannabis use, and
heightened creativity."
So, there you have it: if you smoke pot you're probably more creative than people who don't…
but it's not necessarily the weed that's got your creativity going.
It was you all along!
Note: This study was conducted with all subjects being sober, meaning none of them were under
the influence of marijuana during the test.

Can You Fake It Until You Make It? - Duration: 1:12.
- Can you fake it till you make it and is that realistic?
Yes and no. Here's the deal.
You can't totally fake it.
You have to have some level of skill,
passion, execution, result, service, pride--
You have to have something.
You can't start with zero, say you have everything, sell it,
and then expect something to happen.
That's called The Fyre Festival.
But, in reality,
you do need to stretch a little.
Get to that next wrung, get to that next level.
You can stretch a bit.
It's okay to stretch assuming that you can
then deliver on your promises.
Can you say, "Yes, we can do that, we can make it",
though you've never made it before.
You can say that.
As long as you then deliver and actually
make the product you just said you could.
That's it.
And so I think for you,
how much of a stretch is that?
Just depends on your level of execution, your expertise,
and how comfortable you are being uncomfortable.
That's all it is.
But, if you've got nothing,
and you're saying you have everything,
you're just a liar.

I Can't Make You Love Me - Duration: 9:13.
Okay... What's Good...? What's Good, Everybody? I apologize about how the beginning of the
video started. I was actually trying to make sure that we copied some people on
the video trying to get the word out. So, anyways... we flipped back. We'll go ahead
and get started. This is Pastor Devin Stephenson, Pastor of Servants of Christ,
where we are always "changing lives one mind at the time" and I just wanted to give you
this reminder... something that you can use something that I bless you for
our sunrise discussion this morning and it's very simple it's very simple it's
just that you have to remember that I can't make you love me right I can't
make you you can't force somebody to love you and when you get this in your
heart then you realize that a lot of the pain that you feel a lot of the
suffering a lot of the relationship stuff you're going through you'll be
able to get over it because you understand very quick quickly it's not
your job to try and force somebody to show an action of love right to try and
force somebody to show an action of kindness I can't force anybody to love
me I cannot force anybody to do what should be on their heart so brothers
don't feel a certain way if you're going out of your way you're providing you're
taking care of children you're taking care of children that aren't your own
whatever the case might be your loving with everything that you have and you
feel like it's not being reciprocated like don't try to force something that
can't be there not just as far as forth the relationship but don't try to force
the fact that you're trying to love somebody who doesn't love you
since it's the same thing if you're with somebody and you feel like you're doing
everything from cooking the cleaning to working to or maybe you're a
stay-at-home mom and you're giving your best you're sacrificing you've given
children and all that you can't force somebody to love you now as I always say
we have to get the definition of love right because some people think that
love is something that you make in a bedroom right which is fall short of
what love is some people think that love is just something as simple as an
emotion but love is not an emotion love is actually an a verb it's an action or
you can call it an adverb it's an action that describes so you can't love
somebody without actually showing an action your action is going to be what
dictates the level love that you give your actions gonna be
what actually shows the level of love that you give so get in a situation
where you understand that you it really what you're saying what I'm saying when
I say you can't force somebody to love you I'm really saying you cannot force
somebody to give an action right you can't force somebody to give an action
you know that that should describe how they feel about you you cannot force it
you have to worry about shoes and sometimes watch this even in our
relationships when we have somebody that loves us maybe they don't love us at the
level that we see or that we want to see or that we've seen in our vision right
but we can't give up and we can't lessen our love so what a lot of people do is
your relationship actually suffers because you lessen your love because
you're trying you're so mad that somebody's not forcing or somebody's not
loving you on the level that you saw when you were playing with your kin and
your Barbie doll Randor you were put or you saw in in whatever movie it is and
you figured hey you were getting the relationship and it would be the movie
but you would have to do one or two struggles that those people had in the
movie but you would come out and now in your relationship you've got real
problems you've got 30 struggles you've got children on top of that you got a
job but you got to take care you don't know if you like that job you don't know
if you you know you've gained weight or you've done this you've done that
whatever it is you've changed life has changed and now all of a sudden you're
not sure and so you're looking at the person and you're like man I saw in this
movie or I saw this couple or I saw my mother and father their love was like
this your love is not the same and since it's not the same I'm not gonna love you
in the same level and so now your relationship is suffering even more
because not only is your significant other not loving but you're not loving
and you made a decision to do so right for the other person it might be where
they are they might be immature in certain areas of their love but you
actually have the maturity level could teach the other person and show them
some things through your love that would help them to become better that means
that you would become happy in the long run but instead you decided to back off
to not love and to you know taper your love on purpose like get that your your
lessening your love you're finding loopholes for your love on /
and then getting mad about the fact that you don't have a relationship that she
wants so we got to get out of this thing that says that hey if they don't love me
then I'm not gonna love them the same way because I want to get past this
rumor and I want to get past this real quick I'm almost done especially with
all this noise around but you know I want to get past this rumor that says
that I have to love specifically or what let me put it like this let's get past
this thing that says that love is 50/50 or your marriage your relationship is
gonna be 50/50 that is a made-up thing that's something that we like to say I
don't even know where that came from but it's not true because there's gonna
be times where my marriage and my marriage sometimes like it's it feel
like it's 70/30 and sometimes they feel like it's thirty seventy in other words
it feels like sometimes my wife is doing way too much sometimes I feel like I'm
doing way too much but regardless we're in this together
and there might be times to where I need to carry the relationship in certain
areas in certain arenas and she might have to do the same so don't allow
excuses don't allow reasoning don't allow what a lot of people are doing
where they work they attempt to love or they say that they love but they don't
want to really give their all love is an action and it's a verb and it's an
adverb so it's an action and it's an action that's so powerful it brings
about description so if you say you love somebody to say it but have no action to
back it up it means that you're destitute of love either you love or you
don't even on a Christian level on a biblical level kingdom of heaven level
whatever even in there it says stuff like you know you it talks about loving
outside of yourself one of the things I like is I think it's like first John
chapter 4 verse 20 and it says that you know you gotta love
or if you can how can you say that you love God who you've never seen but you
don't love your brother who you see every day right so even on that level
that you keep talking about you have this status lets you just keep saying
there's something that you see that you hit a vision you haven't seen it yet but
it's something you want to get to and you have this area you have this arena
you have this destiny then you love it so much but then everything around you
and everybody around you they don't get the same level of love they don't get
the same level of action how is it that you put so much action towards hopefully
getting the promotion which you're not even in yet but you can't love people
who are around you you see what I'm saying so so so you got to get out of
this thing that says that I gotta force somebody the love I've gotta first
people on level and you gotta start focusing on your love I can't force you
to love me but I can't force me to love me and I can't force me to love you so
with all that being said I want to let you know that if you haven't heard this
today if you're about to go to work if you bout to shell out today whatever
you're going to do I want you to know that you are loved I love you God loves
you and even some of the people that you think aren't showing love on the level
that you would like they probably love you a lot more than what you give them
credit for but stop trying to force them into your idea of love putting them in
your box of what you think love is start to value yourself for who you are where
you are and what you need to do to be able to progress for it all right so
that's all that I have I thank you guys so much for being on
I appreciate the king and queen in each and every one of you and even if you're
not living in a kingdom or queendom yet I appreciate the potential king and
queen and you remember we've got the book out we have the manual out if you

description box below I will make sure that I have it posted for you guys at
the end so you'll be able to click on it'll be down in the bottom of the
screen I'm towards the end of the video and
just continue to make sure that you do everything you can focus on your love
focus on the level of love that you get you can always dictate that alright you
can always mandate the to love alright stop worrying about everybody else's
level I can't force you to love me right even God can't force people to love
that's one thing that blessed me and set me free a long time ago he can't force
anybody to bless me hurts anybody to love me then guess what I can't force
you to do the same so it made life a lot easier when I think about it that way
but hopefully you guys got something from it if you got any questions
comments or concerns put them in the comment section below if I didn't say so
already I might be repeating myself but please like share and subscribe the

Can tiny medical implants treat disease? - Duration: 2:23.
[MUSIC]
Implantable medical devices have the potential to make a huge impact
on patient care.
From cardiac pacemakers to cochlear implants to neural stimulators.
However, significant barriers are limiting their widespread application.
Currently, most devices rely on bulky batteries and
wires, which render them intrusive, risky and unwelcome.
Many future applications require an implant that is versatile,
reliable, miniaturized and deeply implantable.
Prof Arbabian and his lab at Stanford University are developing a new
generation of microsized, wirelessly power implants using ultrasound.
Ultrasound has many advantages as a power source.
It is widely used in fetal imaging,
in diagnostics, proving to be safe and effective.
It can be focused to target individual implants deep in the body
with low attenuation.
It can easily and efficiently be converted into electricity.
And they can enable bi-directional communication into and
out of the body, creating a smart network of implants,
thereby improving medical diagnostics and treatments.
The impact consists of an ultrasonic data and power transducer to communicate and
convert the ultrasound to electricity, integrated circuit for
control and processing, and a variety of medical payloads.
For instance, the payload can be a sensor which monitors various health parameters.
Sensor data is transmitted back via the ultrasound transducer.
The payload can also be a stimulator which applies therapeutic impulses or
a module for on-demand targeted drug delivery.
The lab in collaboration with the Stanford Medical School,
is building these next generation implants to treat hypertension,
diabetes, epilepsy, bladder incontinence, and
many more to drive advances in personalized on demand patient care.

Dr. Pillai: You Can Change Your Karma: Solutions - Duration: 7:32.
This is a divinely inspired video.
It's again God time in India.
And I just came from Tiruvannamalai a day ago.
Something is forcing me to go back.
It's as if God, Tiruvannamalai, the mountain is possessing me. and I'm very happy about
it.
I have never had an experience like this, And what am I learning from this place?
I'm learning from this place about one thing — changing the unchangeable.
This is something very, very close to my heart.
One thing that everybody wants to change in their life is their Karma.
Which is their bad money Karma, bad relationship Karma and bad health Karma.
Is it changeable?
For most people, if not all, it's unchangeable.
Every day you face the same reality over and over and over again.
Now I am convinced after working for four decades on this subject of changing the Karma
of people, I am convinced that God is the only answer.
But then we live in a civilization and amidst people to whom God is marginalized.
We don't even have any sensibility whatsoever to God.
We have sensibility belief in rationality, in science, but not in God.
We have lost the sensibility towards God.
But let me tell you who can change your Karma is only God.
But how can you bring back God in your life?
One definition of God that I am comfortable with and you can also resonate with it is
— God is Consciousness within you.
God is not outside of you.
But he is not the rational Brain.
Just before I started doing this, I was flipping through many, very interesting video clips
on Facebook.
But not settling on anything, but just being there for a few seconds and then going.
And this is what we do in life.
We don't have just commitment.
We don't have commitment to one thing — to God.
If you have commitment to God, commitment is number one.
And commitment to God since God is very difficult to conceive of and feel.
And I'm offering this solution to you.
Just think of God as your Consciousness beyond your mind, your rationality.
It is the minutest of the minute.
And meditation is one way of getting there.
And then putting all your emotions to God is another way.
These are technologies.
I want you to take this seriously.
Either meditate or believe in God like a child believes in her mother or father solving the
child's problem.
You definitely will get an answer.
God is compassionate.
He's the minutest of the minute.
Meditation will get you there.
I want to invite you to Tiruvannamalai for my birthday.
And there will be other places where I will be taking you to.
The Mystery School program will discipline you.
I also recommend that to you.
The change is the birthright of every thinking being.
And you can change your life, your relationship your money, your health. God bless.

Can Your Life As Artist Change? - Duration: 11:29.
- Thank you, Ann Rea.
I would not be here without you.
I really, you have changed my life.
I feel like you unlocked the keys to figuring it out.
And you opened my world to the possibilities
that I didn't even see.
And I have been transformed by your wisdom.
And I just can't even tell you how grateful I am.
- Aww.
- Thank you.
And I tell everyone what an amazing thing this course is.
I tell everyone (laughs).
Like, I'm taking this creative business course
that has changed my life.
And it has.
It has in so many ways, all those ways.
And the attitude, that's what it did for me.
My attitude is, I can cultivate that feeling of...
of ease and joy
and listen to that, and know that's the right way to go.
And then things open up, my purpose comes through,
and I feel empowered, and it's just wonderful.
Thank you so much.
- "None of the following is listed before the
"Making Art, Making Money semester."
Pretty damn cool.
So, here's what she said.
"I know that attitude is everything, and it is so true.
"It is."
Leslie has a mission.
"I have support, I have focus, I have exercise daily.
"I do an energy routine daily.
"I practice gratitude daily.
"I practice present moment awareness many times daily.
"I read or do audible daily.
"I have an EFT therapist.
"I have smarter goals, I created a dream map.
"I created an awesome new studio.
"I meet with at least two study partners weekly.
"I review day planner daily.
"I joined a critique group.
"I launched a website.
"I purchased a place in a local artists tour.
"I sold out of note cards at the studio tour.
"I created a new body of work.
"I signed up for Square.
"I became a member of Studio Montclair.
"I became a member of the Midmore Arts Center.
"I now have professional head shots.
"I started a Friday art group.
"I'm taking weekly figure drawing classes.
"I created a profile and have 2,500 Instagram followers.
"I created a business page on Facebook.
"One of my paintings is on the cover of a local magazine.
"There's a feature story in that.
"And I'm meeting with a potential client on Monday
"to discuss a commission.
"I met two study partners in person.
"I have plans to meet more.
"And there's so much more to look forward to."
Damn.
- Your guidance was so spot-on,
and every time I got to next lesson, it was like
you were answering my resistance in my head or something.
And so I just chipped away, I just chipped away.
And that sort of, you know, so progress, not perfection.
And it really is.
Figuring out what to get up for every day,
other than my kids.
I needed, like, a meaning.
I wanted to create meaning, and I didn't really feel like I,
I lost the meaning.
And I guess the other thing was,
I'm not sure if it was energy, no, it was a lack of focus.
I was all over the place.
I didn't know what to look at first.
I felt like there's piles of my life,
were just filling up around me.
And it was the same principles that you taught,
you teach how to apply in the semester.
Like creating the goals, and breaking it down
into little steps.
I couldn't see the little steps, I just saw the piles,
and it was overwhelming, so it helped me to just like...
Begin at the beginning, or start at the top
and do the best I could.
You know your advice about like cleaning up your studio,
you know, a little bit at a time.
And a little bit at a time, and it gets you to a place,
now I feel like I'm creating my life instead of my life
just filling up around me in ways that I wasn't happy.
I met Sue Ann Martin in New York
before she moved out to L.A. and I still talk to her.
And I met Fabienne Louis,
who came to my Art on Fridays group that I have.
So she came and created,
and we talked about Making Art, Making Money.
And it was just very exciting to share the ideas
and the re-talk about the reading (laughs).
And talk about the process, you know, and how much...
It's just, it's really so just a great program,
and so generous.
It's really amazing.
So yeah, and then I have plans to meet a whole bunch more
of the MAM group in December, in New York City.
And one of my study partners is coming to visit me,
and then we're going to meet some people in the city
over the holidays.
- And you're going to post photos, right?
- I totally will, yes, absolutely.
- It's your homework assignment.
- This program is so valuable, beyond what it even offers,
because of the way it helps you reframe your life,
and the attitude that it helps you to bring to your life.
And when I think about how much money I spent
in art school, and I got no business guidance or anything,
and after graduating, it was just like a trust fund
kind of career because I just didn't know how to do it.
So anyway, but so this is,
this is real career guidance.
- Business, business.
- Business, sorry, business, yes, that's what I meant.
This is real business guidance, and it teaches you
how to be an entrepreneur.
And your whole iterative process that you teach,
and the smarter goals that we practice,
like I realize that's like a process continually.
Like, we'll keep reiterating,
and keep setting new, smarter goals,
and pivoting when things don't work.
It's just really teaching me how to set a course
to achieve what I want to achieve in my business,
and my life.
Like, the death meditation, like, you know,
it's like (laughs).
Like, you don't mess around, you're (laughs).
- No, I don't (laughs).
- Well, it's so good, 'cause why wait until you're there
to go, oh, that's what I should have done.
- Exactly (laughs).
- So now, we like go there and we know.
And so, it's so powerful across the board.
And the reading list, and the ideas, and the practices,
the coach to joy and everything.
It's probably the best money anybody could spend
on anything.
That's what I tell people (laughs).
Yes, they should.
I feel like it's the best money spent.
Like, it's a combination of mindfulness,
and like stepping into your own power.
And there's like a spiritual piece,
and there's a structuring piece,
and what are the, what are the...
The George Pratt, the athlete, the high performance.
- Yeah, performance psychology.
- You're teaching us how to tap into our highest potential,
and how to like figure it out, and how to have a plan.
And also, I feel now that it doesn't matter
what your idea is, 'cause lots of people have ideas.
Creative people are popping ideas out right and left.
But if you don't have a plan of what to do with it,
and what you want to do with it, then nothing will happen.
The study partners are just wonderful, wonderful people.
I've met several really awesome people that share resources.
They're happy to share information.
Happy to just talk about their experiences
with their own selling.
Or you know, just issues that come up within the process.
And, you know, some want to do the remembering process with,
and some want to do the plan a wedding.
That was the first smarter goal that I did,
was, you gave us the assignment to plan the wedding
with the Post-Its.
You know, so that everybody shows up.
They're usually an hour meeting,
and people are very generous to make sure
that I've gotten as much time as they've gotten.
Like they want to make sure
that we're all getting what we need.
And I have accountability partners that, you know,
write stuff down and then say to me next week,
"So, did you finish doing your blah-blah-blah?"
And I'm like, oh my God.
- Nice.
- But it's good because I know, there have been a few nights
like on a Thursday where I was meeting someone
on Friday morning, where I didn't do like my homework.
And so I'd do it, and I do it for them.
Like, when I wouldn't do it for me,
I would still do it for them.
And so the accountability is great.
And I have a couple of people that help with that.
And that's just so great, because it is a self-paced program
so to have someone kind of helping you, keep you on-point,

Burn Down the House - Jack Marshall Can't Do This - Webseries - Ep 29 - Duration: 5:09.
We've been searching around the clock.
At least it feels that way.
We're on our third pass through the house. Fourth?
Doesn't matter.
Donni's at the hardware store picking up some supplies.
This house has a startling lack of tools.
Guess Morgan was good for something.
Look, since Donni's gone, I wanted to take the time to make a video
because I feel like we haven't had a chance to slow things down.
And if I'm being honest,
I'm starting to feel like my time here is gonna come to an end before I figure out what's hidden in the house.
If anything.
I'm not losing hope. I'm just recognizing reality I guess.
There's still time.
I just I don't want to be one of those guys that never finishes what he starts, you know?
The climb.
My book.
This house.
It matters.
And the thought that I won't complete my aunt's final task is...
When I went to see Olivia, I thought I was doing the right thing.
You know, my aunt always wanted me to see things through
and I thought that that meant pursuing Olivia.
I put a relationship ahead of money.
I, I guess that's what you're supposed to do right.
Mr. Marshall?
Yeah?
Another letter.
From Morgan?
I'm afraid so.
Our daily eviction notice.
That makes 12.
Arthur loves reminding me that he's won.
An unbecoming pleasure if you ask me.
Even so, I tip my hat to the both of you.
I know when I've been bested.
Me?
House, the game's over. You can stop pretending.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Oh, come on. Who do you think told Arthur I went to see Olivia?
I told no one.
Well, you've been reporting my every move since I got here.
Oh, what? You think I didn't know?
Whether you believe me or not, I have been protecting the estate the entire time.
Please.
I have done everything I can. I have been a loyal servant.
To Arthur.
To your Aunt.
House, let it go. It's done.
Please, believe me.
Enough.
I don't mind being beaten but I hate being lied to.
And you've been lying to me since I got here.
Mr. Jack Marshall.
I have stood for you.
Whether you believe me or not, I am your ally.
And I will stand by you from here on no matter if it costs me my position or or what little I have.
I am with you.
What's going on guys?
House and I are just having a heart-to-heart.
Fun. Are you on our team now?
Time to choose.
Are you staying or going?
We can't keep sneaking around you. We don't have the time.
Mr. Marshall I have always - -
The past is the past. We aim to figure out what is in this house.
So, you're either helping us or you're getting out of the way.
I'm staying.
Great.
Then strap yourselves in,
cause I've got a bomb to drop.
Bring it on.
That's the benefit.
Olivia?
With Arthur.
House, you were telling the truth.
What do you think Olivia told Arthur?
She knew the terms of the will.
If she could get me outside the county line - -
She'd get the house.
I just didn't think that she would - -
But we don't know for sure that's what happened.
Might explain why she cut communication off so quickly.
I'm sorry.
I misjudged you.
We misjudged one another, Mr. Marshall.
In better news, I bought sledgehammers.
So, what do you say to taking out some aggression on some 19th century cellar walls?
Lead the way.
Did you say walls?
Don't worry about it, House.

Can You Name These Songs? - Duration: 7:46.
hey, welcome to 12tone! let's try an experiment.
I'll play you a song, and you try to figure out what it is.
ready? here we go.
(bang) did that seem too short?
ok, let's try another one.
(bang) got it? well, how about this? (bang) ok, let's do one more for fun.
(bang) in case you missed any, those were Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears,
Every Breath You Take by The Police, Michael Jackson's Thriller, and Nirvana's Smells Like
Teen Spirit.
so how'd you do?
statistically speaking, it's likely you got at least one, and you may have even got all
four.
but each clip was less than half a second long: how were you able to put together so
much information in such a short time?
well, now we're getting into brain stuff and I'm just a music theorist, so I'm gonna have
to call for backup from my neuroscientist friend, Alie Astrocyte from Neurotransmissions!
Hey Cory!
Thanks for having me.
To be able to recognize short clips like these, we've got to pull from our long-term memory.
Scientists split long-term memories into a couple of different categories - declarative,
or explicit, and nondeclarative, or implicit.
Our memories of facts and events - and art and music - are declarative memories.
Certain brain regions are really important for letting you store lyrics like when you
memorized Hit Me Baby One More Time back in 1998 - and for remembering exactly what those
opening riffs sounded like when you heard them just now.
Scientists believe that our memories are processed through the hippocampus.
The hippocampus is a seahorse-shaped region located deep inside the brain.
The importance of this region in memory formation became clear after a man named Henry Molaison
had his hippocampus removed to cure his epilepsy.
After he woke up from the surgery, doctors discovered that he could no longer form new
memories!
The memories themselves are believed to be stored in the connections between neurons.
Even though we don't really grow many new neurons as we age, our brain cells are plastic
- that means they're adaptable and can change.
That's how our brains are able to connect different kinds of information together - by
wiring together different neurons and brain regions.
these specific results are from a 2010 paper written by music psychologist Carol Krumhansl.
the full paper is linked in the description, but the main point was to better understand
the relationship between memory and music.
that is, when we commit a song to memory, how is that information connected? in order
to explore that, Professor Krumhansl collected a list of 28 popular songs and took tiny slices
of them to play for her experimental subjects.
and I mean tiny: 400 milliseconds, to be exact.
when she tested the clips with the music identification software Shazam it was unable to even recognize
them, but her subjects were able to identify them about 25% of the time.
One interesting result was a strong correlation between confidence and accuracy: that is,
when a test subject knew the song, they also knew that they knew it.
After giving an answer for each song snippet, the subjects would give a confidence rating
from 1 to 6, with 1 being "no idea" and 6 being "I definitely know both the title and
the artist".
Despite having shades of grey on the scale (six, to be exact), there were clear clusters
at the extremes: roughly 70% of answers were marked with either a 1 or a 6.
And that confidence was justified: about 95% of 6s had the correct answer and 97% of correct
answers were marked with a 6.
she also asked them to identify a couple other properties of the song, including decade of
release, style, and emotional feel.
the last two are hard to measure objectively, so the results were compared to the subject's
own judgments when listening to longer clips from the same song afterwards.
but the most interesting one to me is the release date, because of a well-known phenomenon
known as the reminiscence bump.
The reminiscence bump is a phenomenon where we are more easily able to recall memories
from certain ages.
In this case, from about ten years old to about thirty.
The theory says that we remember things during this time because there's just a lot of
stuff going on.
Everything is new and interesting, we figure out who we are, and we go through a lot of
developmental, educational, and life milestones during this time.
Since things typically tend to stabilize after that, less bandwidth goes towards creating
new memories.
But what's interesting about the reminiscence bump is that ALL memories seem to be stronger
- even things that aren't so important.
because our memories of that period are so much stronger, it stands to reason that we
would be better at recognizing songs from that era, but that's not what Krumhansl's
results showed.
her subjects were college students born around 1990, and while the most recognized clip was
a Britney Spears song that came out in '98, second place went to Respect by Aretha Franklin,
from 1967 and, overall, there was no significant correlation between release date and recognition.
of course, it's not like children are never exposed to older music, but the point is we
don't seem to be better at recognizing songs from our own generation.
interestingly, though, even when participants failed to recognize the song, they were still
pretty good at guessing when it came out, which means that the differences in tone and
timbre between musical eras is very deeply ingrained in our minds.
but release date isn't the only thing that might've affected recognition.
for instance, the chorus is generally considered the most memorable part of the song: we often
call it the hook, and it's the part most likely to get stuck in your head.
but is it actually easier to recognize? to test this, Krumhansl included two clips from
each song: one from the chorus and one from somewhere else. and while chorus clips did
do slightly better on average, she concluded that the difference wasn't statistically significant.
but there was one factor that was incredibly significant.
any guesses? it's actually really simple: do you hear the name of the song?
clips that included either the full name or part of it were over twice as likely to be
recognized, which makes a lot of sense.
compare this (bang) to this.
(bang) it's a lot easier to place that second one, isn't it?
But science isn't science unless it's repeatable, so Krumhansl tried another variation on the
experiment.
Before, she used 400 millisecond clips.
But in the second experiment, she used only 300 milliseconds, and the results are predictable:
people got a lot worse.
In fact, they only managed to identify the song 11% of the time.
That said, most of the other observed patterns held.
People mostly either confidently identified both song and artist or had no idea at all.
And that last part is important: it was very rare for participants in either study to identify
just one of those factors, implying that a song's name and its artist are very closely
linked in our brains and we have difficulty accessing one without finding the other as
well.
These results make sense, given what we understand about how our brains link related information.
Even beyond this study, researching the effects of music on the brain is a whole subfield
of cognitive neuroscience.
As far as we can tell, music is a uniquely human development - so understanding how we
create and understand music might help us understand what makes our brains so special.
The brain regions dedicated to processing sound are larger in humans than in other species,
and we developed specialized brain regions to process language.
But music is a way of expressing ourselves that doesn't require words.
We know that music can have a physical effect on the brain - a small study in 2010 showed
that subjects who felt "chills" while listening to instrumental music showed an
increase in dopamine signaling in the striatum.
This means that listening to music isn't just psychologically pleasurable - it actually
increases the signaling of the brain's pleasure and reward centers.
There's even evidence that music therapy may be helpful for patients with mood disorders
like depression, and rhythmic movement therapy accompanied by music can help stroke and Parkinson's
patients recover function.
So there's a lot of good evidence that music is important to us, and /good/ for us - but
we've still got a long way to go before we understand where music came from, or why
it's so important.
so that's something you may not have known about your brain, but here's something you
may not have known about mine: I'm autistic.
I talked with Alie about what that means, as well as what scientists know about the
condition, over on her channel, Neurotransmissions.
I learned a lot, and I've put a link to that video in the description, which you should
really check out.
