>> Allison Hirth, Reporting: SITTING ON THIS BENCH, STRIKING THE
STICK-LIKE KEYS AND THE SOUND OF BELLS THAT FOLLOWS.
IF YOU ASK THOMAS HUGHES, IT'S A REAL PRIVILEGE TO PLAY.
>> Thomas Hughes, Carillonist: I like the physicality of it.
I like being able to hear the results of what you're doing.
>> Allison Hirth: HUGHES IS AN ORGANIST (WHO HAS) TAUGHT AT TEXAS TECH FOR MORE
THAN 20 YEARS. HE LEARNED TO PLAY THE CARILLON IN THE
LATE 90S. >> Thomas Hughes: You can play quite complex music if
you're coordinated enough. Sometimes I wonder if I am.
>> Allison Hirth: IT DOESN'T TAKE LONG TO RECOGNIZE, HUGHES HAS WHAT IT TAKES.
>> Thomas Hughes: If you want something soft, you just tap it.
Whereas, if you want something loud, you get a much more robust ring.
>> Allison Hirth: THE CARILLON KEYBOARD AND ITS 37 BELLS ARE LOCATED
ATOP THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING. >> Thomas Hughes: This is the one that weighs
a little over a ton. This is the, our bourdon. That's the lowest note.
>> Allison Hirth: THE INSTRUMENT'S SOUND IS EASILY RECOGNIZED BY
MOST RED RAIDERS. ITS MUSIC (IS) PART OF ONE OF TEXAS TECH'S
MOST TREASURED TRADITIONS, CAROL OF LIGHTS.
THE CEREMONY STARTS WITH A CARILLON CONCERT, AND SINCE
2003, IT'S BEEN HUGHES' HANDS AND HIS FEET BEHIND THE MUSIC.
>> Thomas Hughes: I like to think of it as the prelude to the whole function.
It gets people in the mood, I think, and gets them ready-- sort of waiting in the
quiet for the lights to come on. >> Allison Hirth: HE SHOWS UP ABOUT AN HOUR BEFORE
THE SHOW STARTS. >> Thomas Hughes: And (I) make sure everything is set
up and usually get the heater going.
>> Allison Hirth: AND ON CUE, PLAYS FOR THE THOUSANDS LISTENING BELOW.
>> Thomas Hughes: It's more than just a sort of end of the semester
feeling. It's, okay, we have something we can get together and celebrate
here-- a tradition that's going strong-- and I believe we get to express our
pride as members of Texas Tech University, and that's a big deal.
>> Allison Hirth: IT'S A JOB HUGHES LOVES.
>> Thomas Hughes: When you come up here and you see the
lights, it's just breathtaking. It really is. It's one of the best views on campus.
>> Allison Hirth: THE MUSIC IS MEMORABLE FOR SO MANY, INCLUDING HUGHES, WHO HOPES
TO CONTINUE PLAYING CHRISTMAS CAROLS WITH THE CARILLON FOR YEARS
TO COME. >> Thomas Hughes: I look forward to it and I certainly mark my calendar by it.
