Hey hey hey what's going on today we're gonna
Talk about music marketing now some of you may know me as JASS BIANCHI the emcee or the activist or the consultant or
The annoying neighbor who plays my music too loud or possibly we met somewhere random in the woods
And then we started talking about Martians, but however you know me, and if you don't know me
And this is your first time meeting me
virtually then welcome, and I'm excited to begin music marketing now before we do right we have to talk about
networking networking is an extremely huge part of
Marketing right so before we even get started on music marketing if you can go to Facebook LinkedIn Twitter
Instagram and connect with me on there. That would be great now. Let's start from square one
What the head is music marketing music marketing is
Taking the right content getting it to the right people at the right time and making sure that when you're doing it
It goes over smoothly, you're saying to yourself right okay? That's great. I get the basic understanding for what music marketing is
What do I really need it the answer is if you're serious about your career? You need it a lot
I mean a lot a lot in fact you're gonna need it so much
That when you're at your Thanksgiving dinner table with all your family, and your phone's going being
Bing
Bing and you're looking at your phone under the table because you're trying to be slick about it and everybody's staring at you
And they're getting kind of annoyed because you're that person if you're that person you're doing something right there is something
That's gonna blow your mind and might not but you do not need an inkling of a soundbite in order to start your music
marketing career
What the hell does that mean that means? You don't even need a song you don't need your voice
You don't need a whole note of anything in order to get started
What you do need is vision and you need a brain?
and you need a foundation for what you're trying to say because
once that foundation of what your your vision is comes into fruition comes out into the universe that's content and
Content could be used in any shape form or fashion, so as long as you have content
Then you'll succeed at beginning your career. Let's say for example. You don't have a lot of money and
You know you don't know where to get started because you don't have friends in the industry
And you just really want people to see what you're doing so you could get things started
Then I would suggest going online and starting a Facebook
Following and basically putting together some keynote ideas of what you're trying to say you can just use your
Thoughts as the content and then eventually when you start getting everybody interested in what you're doing, then you start saying hey guys
I've got this new music coming out and everyone goes oh yeah, man. That's awesome
You know we've been following you for a while now
Let's check it out, and so that could be one option now on the other side of things
Let's say for example
You hustle harp you go out there, and you do dog walking and you babysit while you're doing dog walking and you
Do whatever else right and you have this money, and you go, okay? Can I start my career with my music?
I you know. I don't really want to do the content thing being anything other than my music absolutely you can do that, too
There's no one way how to market yourself
And if anybody is saying that this is the one way they're trying to push something on you
And it might not be your way it might
But it might not we started with the idea of marketing being online marketing right, but there's so many different
Ways to market yourself, there's online marketing. There's offline marketing and so
Why don't we get started on the online marketing part?
Then we could go into the offline marketing part so social media right everybody goes
Oh social media is the way the way the way the thing is it might not be your way
There are actually some artists popular very famous artists very successful artists that really can't be found on social media
It's really their fans putting up pages for them so their vision was to not be on social media
And they made it happen
Why how from other ways of marketing right so some other ways of marketing for example unlike social media?
it could still be digital such as eblasts or
newsletters
Websites that are promoting content that with your brand
And so you need to start reaching out to those outlets if you think again that that's your vision in the marketing world we have
the inbound marketing the new-age marketing, and then we have traditional marketing and then with traditional marketing it's more so the
TV ads or terrestrial radio so FM radio such as colleges
But it's more of what people used to do to get their name out there me personally. I use a mixture of both
I mainly you know I'm biased I use a lot of online marketing because I think that for my brand and what I'm doing
It's the best way to get things done
But I also integrate some traditional marketing as well the thing that we don't want to forget the thing that is the most
Important thing of all and is gold is word-of-mouth marketing its organic
It's not you putting something in somebody's face and saying take this like for example
Just went out to the bar last night
The girls are sitting there at the bar and all of a sudden this random distributor from a beer company comes up
But you know he just basically said ladies
I got these stickers for you if you want them
And I don't even know what he's promoting you know and and so I'm like I'm in the middle of a deep conversation
over here and
You just throw in some stickers on the bar, but needless to say that's traditional marketing. That's taking something
That's tangible he's throwing it to the right people at the right time and hoping well
Wasn't really the right time, but at least we're in my eyes
But you get the point and so that would be an example of traditional marketing so
The next thing we're gonna talk about is
Money and marketing right I mean, let's be real everybody who wants to be successful at what they do
eventually it leads to some type of
Monetary compensation if you want to keep it as being something that is your full-time gig okay, when people say, okay?
Jess you know I really get this and everything
But I feel like it might be wasting my time right now thinking about music marketing because really that's great and everything
But how does it get you paid and the answer is they're so so so so so
Many ways for you to get paid through music marketing
But before you can even think about getting paid you have to set yourself up for success and in order to do that
There are a couple different steps that you have to take first step is
registering yourself with the PR Oh a performance rights
Organization sometimes you hear it in rapper songs
Or you'll hear it in country songs where they sing about who they're registered with those companies would be ASCAP BMI
SESAC and there are some other smaller companies as well
And they all have their guidelines and who they accept
And how they accept you so you have to register yourself and your music with these PR
O--'s before you can even get started because what they do is they go out there
And they ensure that when you perform in public that you're getting paid for doing so
The second thing you want to do to set yourself up for success is to register yourself with a digital music distribution
Company so that would be someone like tune core or CD Baby, and what they do is they take your music and they say?
Done hey
iTunes Spotify
All of these digital streaming services I've got this new song or a bunch of songs
And they're really cool claim on your services
and so that's essentially how you start getting some exposure through these digital streaming companies and
The other thing that I suggest that you do is register yourself and your music with a music licensing company
So that would be somebody like Rumble Fish when you register with them
What they do is they go out into the world and they start researching?
and they see who's usually using your music and how they're using it and
Basically, are you getting paid if you're not getting paid for them to use your music then
That's one Rumble fish comes in and they say hey, you know you're getting paid over there
How come my artist is it? This is where a lawyer is awesome and everyone goes?
Oh lawyer, no lawyers can be your best friends. They should it be somebody you call last minute like hey, dude
You know got into this like thing and I need your help my suggestion would be to find a lawyer. That is low cost
Affordable and sees your vision and is willing to work with you
And then when you start making the big bucks
They can you know take a larger percentage really the main thing is if someone's getting paid off of your content?
You need to get paid - okay great awesome. Whoo how do I get started great?
So this is how you get started right now again this might not work for you
But what I suggest to people just getting started is this something called a be testing
Let's say for example you have two album covers and you're kind of torn and you're like
I don't know yet, which one I'm gonna go with well
You have option a and option B and option a is really cool, but it's not the color
Maybe you're going for that aligns with your brand or maybe option B
Isn't exactly what you want, right?
So how do you figure out which one to go with well the answer is?
Listen to your audience you want them to feel like they're a part of what you're doing so what I would suggest is taking
Option A and going to Facebook and saying hey Facebook seven o'clock p.m.. On a Thursday
Putting up the album and seeing what kind of response you get in that group whatever it is even if you get no response
That's a response. That's critical information and so
Let's say for example. You said okay. I got what people think about option A. But what about option B?
Well, that's where you take the other album cover, and you go to the same exact Facebook group, and you say again
Oh, you know check this album cover out, and you post at the same time the following Thursday
And it's in front of the same people and then you jot and you notes down and you
Figure out how people are reacting to this other option compare and contrast the two, and which one am I gonna go with so
That's a simple tactic that we use that's called a B marketing
Here's another tactic right as long as we're going along with the whole Facebook theme. Let's say for example
You have your album cover B. You go with an album covered B. You say, okay?
I really need people that other people outside of that group to see what I'm doing how am I gonna get a larger audience?
You should go to who you know is gonna support. You right away, aka
brother-sister bestfriend
Somebody who knows you do what you do and they support it
But somebody who's gonna be like a guarantee to help you in trying to get your vision out there. Let's say
It's your brother. You go to your brother, and you say hey look. Here's the album cover
Do you think maybe you could put it up on your Facebook page and tag some of your friends and tag me in it?
Too now when he goes and he does that you're creating new
Audiences that are engaging and getting to see your product
And that's crucial in order to gain new exposure and new fans and since he tagged you in that post
Now you can be updated every single time that someone you know interacts with that post that brings me to my last
Thing that I want to talk about is
identifying and then indexing your potential fans
So let's see for example
When your brother puts it up
And he tags a bunch of his friends and tags you in it you get a notification that says so-and-so
commented on a tagged photo of you and
Then you get to see what the comments are now. Let's say one of his friends from college goes. Hey. This is cool
This is interesting. It's fascinating who is this and your brother goes? Oh? This is my sister?
That's when you need to go to that person's profile page check out where they are who they are
What they like and you have to index it, so it's identifying who's interested in your product and then
Indexing it. That's the information you need to even go on tours right so let's say your brother's trying us from Chicago
right and
he's into the type of music you're doing so next thing you know a
Year later all of a sudden you have an Excel spreadsheet of all these people that live in
Chicago now you can go on tour in Chicago because most likely those people are going to want to buy
Tickets to go see your shop these are three different examples
Immediate examples of how you can get started
So that's basically the introduction to music marketing yes
There are some things that I said in there where some people might be sitting there going okay?
Yeah, but you didn't talk about this and how come this and it doesn't exactly happen like that
Absolutely, I mean there are things that I spoke about that
I can't really get into too much depth because this is the introduction
So if you feel like you want to learn more about what I'm talking about
