Cut me in Four. Olivia stared at her boyfriend Lenny in disbelief. "You are
joking I presume?" Lenny laughed which added to Olivia's annoyance. Lenny was a
nice person, quite tall and a little bit chubby.
He had sky-blue eyes and a smile to make any girl's heart melt. They had been
dating for almost two years now. The wonderful shine carried by new romance
had worn off but they were good match and it was only these bouts of
selfishness that made Olivia wonder if he was truly the man she wanted to spend
the rest of her life with. "It will be the trip of a lifetime if we go by coach!"
he said persuasively "You know I am travel sick! What on earth
possessed you to book the coach ?" "Coach travel can't be
compared with going by car," he informed her, "the suspension is fantastic on those
coaches, you barely know you are being driven." "If you aren't travel sick that is,"
Olivia insisted. 'It's all in your head!" "And a couple of hundred pounds more in
your pocket if we go by coach rather than fly ." "Money doesn't come into the
equation, Olivia," he said, trying his best to sound convincing. "Money always comes
into the equation with you," she shot back, "you are mean Lenny Redford. This is
supposed to be my 25th birthday present! I love you but you are mean." "It's better
that we have a couple of hundred pounds extra to spent when we are in Norway
than spending it on expensive plane tickets."
Suddenly Olivia's temper soared. "No, it isn't better, because it will take us two
days to get there on that coach; two days of me being sick!
I will be fit for doll rags when I get there and then what do you know, I have
the same nightmare journey to anticipate coming back." Lenny was even-tempered as a
general rule but when his girlfriend got unnecessarily annoyed like this, he could
become uncharacteristically impulsive. "Change your attitude Olivia and change
it quickly," he said warningly. "Or what?" she yelled.
Then even louder she screamed, "Or what?" She watched his face turn red and knew
instantly she had overstepped her mark but it was all his fault.
He was being selfish yet again. He should have given some consideration as to what
might be best for her, it was her birthday when all said and done. She saw
his eyes were almost popping out of their sockets. "Get the hell out of here!"
he bawled." He watched her as she froze and then the walls
almost tembled as he shouted even louder, "GET OUT!"
Olivia sat in the window of her favourite coffee shop, staring vacantly at the passers-by while she waited for her friend Tessa to bring their luxury
cappuccinos over. "Here you are; I asked for extra chocolate powder on the top,"
Tessa said cheerfully. "Any news from Lenny?" "No, nothing! I am not
even sure if I want to hear from him to be honest ." "Of course you do.
It doesn't do any harm to have a break sometimes, it actually does a lot of good."
"The thing is, Tess, I don't know if we are break or if we have split up or if
we are still a couple! That's the worst bit." "How many days is it now?" "Five." Tess''s
forehead creased. "That's not like Lenny." "I know, I saw Stephen yesterday and he told
me that he had seen him in a wine bar on the other side of town with a girl."
"Stephen should have kept his mouth shut," Tessa said. Something was amiss
Olivia stared into her friend's eyes. "Did you know about this?" She witnessed her
friend looking a little uncomfortable. "It's true? Tess you have to tell me."
Tessa nodded her head. "Yes, I was with Stephen. We both saw them. I was going to turn
round and leave but Stephen found us a quiet spot, just the time it took to have a
quick glass of wine and observe them." "Well, he didn't lose any time then did he?"
Olivia's voice raised several octaves as she spoke.
A particularly handsome young man who was sat on the next table turned his
head. "Excuse me," Olivia apologized. The man's head dropped
slightly to one side and he beamed her a beautiful smile, shrugging his shoulders
a little he simply said, "It's nothing." But he did so with an accent to die for.
Taken aback by this unexpected diversion, Olivia felt her cheeks burning up.
Tessa spotted it immediately and gently kicked her friend's leg and gave her a
wide-open look to signal to pursue the
conversation. Olivia shook her head but Tessa had no intention of letting this
moment go. Looking over at the young man and quickly regaining his attention she
smiled and said the word, "Men!" He understood and gave a small laugh, "Yes," he
said, "you cannot live with us but you cannot live without us, that is what you
say I think." It was difficult to say who was drooling most as the man spoke. Both
girls beamed at him. "My name is Paulo, ciao."
"Gosh, you're Italian," Tessa said. "You Italians are the worst,"
she said teasingly. "Yes, I believe that is what some women think, it is just a
myth of course." He gave them another lovely smile. He spoke calmly and his
gentleness showed through. They progressively brought him into their
conversation until he finally joined them and he ordered three more
cappuccinos while they chatted. He explained that he was working for 12
months with a partner company of his office in Milan in order to improve his
English. He had arrived three months earlier and
was eager to learn and visit as much of the country as he could. As all three of
them rose to leave, Paulo turned to Olivia and quite naturally asked her if she
would like to have dinner with him the following day. The colour rose again in
her face and her speech stumbled out a little awkwardly
as she said with delight that she would love to. "Hey, I met this cute guy on that
new dating app," Tessa said gleefully, "do you want to have a go?"
"No thanks I'm a bit busy on the dating front at the moment," Olivia said
smiling. "Anything serious?" "No, just fun. Did Steven tell you that we'd been out for
dinner together a few times." "Yes, he did actually. That has been on the cards for
a long time, he has always liked you." "I know," Olivia confirmed, "but the
timing was never right. If Lenny ever found out about that he
would kill me." "Have you heard anything from him ?" "Nothing,
he must be seething. My birthday is in six weeks time and he has paid for two
tickets...two coach tickets," she added a little scathingly.
"The last of the big spenders, hey?" "I would have loved to go on that trip to Norway.
The waterfalls over there are fabulous, he was going to take me to Langfossen;
I dreamed of going there." "There is still time." Olivia shrugged her shoulders, "I
miss him, even if it is nice to be wined and dined." "And Paolo?" "Paolo is lovely, I am
enchanted by him. He is fun just like Steven is." Tessa grabbed her phone. "Come on,
let's have just a little bit more fun with this app.
iI searches for men who are within 15 minutes drive. Let's try for a double
date." Olivia laughed, "Well, I don't suppose there's
any harm in it is there? I am already seeing two men...if I don't count Lenny
that is!" Both girls giggled and Tessa began her search. "Happy birthday to
Olivia, happy birthday to you," they chanted and then Lenny, Stephen and Tessa
clapped their hands as Olivia blew out the 25 candles on her cake. "Thanks, Tess," Olivia
said, "this is a lovely surprise." "Well, we can't be with you on the day so
this is just a little pre-birthday celebration and you will notice that I
have made the cake myself." "I did notice, thank you."
She gave her friend a warm hug. "I'll have one of those too," Stephen said and pulled
her into his arms, giving her an extra squeeze that she hoped Lenny didn't
notice. "I am so happy to be going," she smiled at Lenny,
"thank you." "Let's cut the cake," Tessa said, "how many
pieces shall I cut it into?" She looked at over at Olivia and waited for her
reply "Cut it into four," she said and winked at Tess. "Yes, four is symbolic her
friend answered, returning the wink and then cut the cake into four quarters. A bottle
of champagne was opened and they all raised their glasses high, all except for
Lenny! "How many bags are you checking in Mr. Redford?" the coach driver asked. "Four
bags;" "That's two each." the driver checked. "Yes, Olivia Williams is my girlfriend but
she is taking the plane, she doesn't travel well by road but it was too late to
cancel her coach ticket. I am looking after the bags, it's easier this way."
"Fine, sir, take a seat anywhere you like."
Lenny drew the little car he had hired to a halt on the bridge. He could feel
the spray of the spectacular waterfalls as soon as he opened the door. This is
how he had promised Olivia they would spend her birthday and he was determined
to keep that promise. He went around to the back of the little car and took out
the suitcases.
He breathed in the fresh Norwegian air. "Here we are
Olivia, Langfossen waterfalls, just like you wanted."
He took another deep breath and then one by one he through each of the four
suitcases off the bridge and into the roaring falls as he mumured, "Happy
birthday Olivia, enjoy."
