Actor Harrison Ford: 'For The First Time In Our History, We Have A President Who…'

Hollywood actor Harrison Ford has just said two words to describe President Donald Trump

that will make liberals go insane: "brilliant" and "compassionate."

Ford, who is a legendary American actor said this while a meeting on Fox and Friends on

Fox News recently.

He doesn't agree with the opinion of certain liberals that our leader Donald Trump is "coldhearted"

and "uncaring".

Ford stated: "I feel that the president is certainly fighting for the American cause

and I'm not afraid to say what I think."

He also added: "At first I didn't like him, but now it seems that he is doing a decent

job.

In fact, he is doing more than a decent job, to be honest."

Afterwards he said something epic, that no liberal could expect to hear it by him.

"Trump is a very brilliant man.

I believe he is compassionate, for the first time ever we have a President who knows what

he is doing and is totally independent."

Every single time somebody says something complimentary in regards to our wonderful

President, Democrats just go crazy and get mad for no reason.

They just can't admit that our President deserves every compliment.

"He's one of the greatest defenders of non-violent conflict resolution, extending

that olive branch," Ford added.

"So everybody in America needs to be behind him and support him in what he's doing."

– he concluded.

What do you think about this?

Klopp: Mo has matured - and we're the lucky beneficiaries - Duration: 4:17.

Klopp: Mo has matured - and we're the lucky beneficiaries

The prolific Egyptian returns to Stadio Olimpico for Wednesdays Champions League semi-final second leg a Liverpool player, and looking to add to a phenomenal tally of 43 goals for his club this season - two of which came in last weeks first meeting at Anfield.

That number so far during 2017-18 outstrips Salah's total of 34 goals he scored across two campaigns with Roma and, during his pre-match press conference at the Olimpico on Tuesday, Klopp was asked to identify the reasons for the No.11's improvement. "He has matured.

He got confidence here.

He came from Chelsea to Florence and played a good season, not as good as a season at Rome, and then he grew up and is now the player he is," the manager said.

"We are the lucky guys who have him now in the team, that's how it is.

It's not that I would've explained to him exactly how to score goals, he knew that before already, but each striker in the world doesn't start as an 18-year-old boy as the goal-getter. .

"He needs to make his own experiences and that's what Mo did in very difficult circumstances.

Coming early from Egypt to Switzerland and doing all that journey, and carrying all that responsibility for all the people, for a whole country, and he is really quite cool with it. .

"At the end he has good teammates - they love helping him and they love how he helps them. That's it.".

Klopp also praised Salah's willingness to carry out defensive duties as well as providing Liverpool with a razor-sharp cutting edge when teaming up with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

"Each player has to do the job.

Each attacking player, each striker needs to defend and Mo is doing that, but does Roberto Firmino defend more, or Sadio Mane defend more in a specific situation? Yes, they do," the boss continued.

"But if you look then when Roberto Firmino is around, he sends Mo Salah up front and tells him 'I close the gate for you, wait there, I bring you the ball'.

That's how a good team works and it's not that he's out of any duties defensively. .

"Even if we defend with all players, it doesn't mean that all players are deep in your own box.

It only means that a few are immediately involved in defending and then you need immediately options when you win the ball. .

"Where can you bring the ball? Where can you play the ball? That's what Mo is doing pretty well and that was the reason why we changed the system at [Manchester] City during the first half, and why he was in the right position to score at least two goals at Anfield against Rome, because he was in that quite advanced position.

"He is not free of duties, he is involved in defending.

But we have players who are more involved in that, that's true.".

🍋 Dump Tristan Thompson or We're Dumping You!✨Kardashian Clan to Khloe - Duration: 4:09.

It's been almost three weeks since the world learned that Tristan Thompson cheated on Khloe

Kardashian while she was pregnant with his child.

And in that time, a whole lot has changed for Khloe.

For one thing, she welcomed her first child, a girl named True Thompson.

On top of that, she kicked Tristan out of his own home and has now taken up residence

in the Cleveland Cavs forward's mansion by herself.

(And by "by herself," of course, we mean in the company of an army of hangers-on and nannies.)

But remarkably, Khloe has stopped short of ending her relationship with Tristan for good.

In fact, despite her previous tough stance on infidelity, it seems she has every intention

of working things out with her philandering baby daddy.

Remember those rumors about Khloe and Tristan getting married?

Yeah, believe it or not, the wedding planning process has been temporarily put on hold,

but not called off entirely.

And those who know the family best say the rest of the Kard clan is flat-out stunned

that Khloe has decided to offer Tristan another chance.

One insider tells the E! (the network that made the Kardashians famous and usually has

an inside track on this sort of thing) that Khloe "has a big heart and is very forgiving,"

adding:

"She doesn't see herself as a single mom at all. She's taking one day at a time and

doing the best she can for her daughter."

By contrast, Khloe's mother and sisters are reportedly "very angry with Tristan and

having a hard time coming to terms with" and are having a tough time coming to terms

with the fact that he might soon marry into their family.

In fact, the Kards flew into Cleveland to be by Khloe's side while she gave birth ... and

then they immediately high-tailed it back to LA.

"The trip wasn't supposed to be so short," E! claims.

"But tensions between the new mom and her family exploded during the visit…the Kardashians

blew up at [Khloe], then decided to leave."

"The family has given Khloe an ultimatum: 'It's Tristan or us,'" a source tells In

Touch Weekly.

"They had a huge bust-up, where Kim accused Khloe of being a 'love addict' and urged her

to get help," the insider adds.

"Khloe told Kim to mind her own business. But none of the family can stand to be around

Tristan. Kris told him to his face that she was disgusted by his behavior."

Sources say Khloe is torn between her desire to start a family with Tristan and her loyalty

to the family she already has:

"She says she's not ready to walk away from the whole thing, and they're like, 'What

are you doing?'" says one informant.

The situation is complicated, of course, by the fact that Tristan's team just advanced

to the second round of the NBA playoffs, largely thanks to a comeback game 7 performance from

Thompson, who's been lackluster on the court in recent weeks.

Khloe is reportedly very wary about perpetuating the idea of the " Kardashian curse " and incurring

the wrath of an entire sports-obsessed city.

"Tristan is in the middle of a playoff run," says one insider, "and having Kim shade

him publicly is not good for him or his team. He feels she's messing with his NBA championship

which is not cool at all."

So at the very least, it seems Khloe will be delaying her final decision until after

the Cavs playoff run comes to an end - but even then her sisters might not get the outome

they're hoping for.

"She's lonely, but she's very stubborn," a source tells In Touch .

"She wants the fairy-tale ending she's always dreamed of and will do anything to get it."

"If we don't get to see dolphins, Hwijae has to do the dolphin show" XD [Battle Trip/2018.04.29] - Duration: 13:01.

Now I finally feel excited since it's over.

I gave it too low a score.

You start to feel different now.

Right? It feels different, right?

After about 20 minutes, I feel different.

- Because... / - I want to complain to someone.

Now I feel happy.

- Now I feel excited. / - Really?

- I was scared before. / - That's good.

So will you rate it again?

- Yes. / - Yes, I will.

I'll give it 4.5 out of 5.

- That high? / - Yes.

It's so much fun after it's over.

I gave it 2.5 before.

Because I felt half scared and half excited.

I'll give you 2 more stars.

- It's worth riding at least once, right? / - Yeah.

(They head to the next destination)

(Battle Trip 2-year anniversary)

- Fishing, fishing. / - Fishing.

It's become popular because of Gyeonggyu.

Fishing is actually fun.

It is.

If we can catch it and eat it.

It's possible.

If the captain has a license, it's possible.

- Let's do that. / - We can make raw fish.

- Yes. / - Eat raw fish?

Since this is supposed to be a family trip,

we should think about what kids like too.

It may not be fun for us

but for the viewers...

(Brain working at full speed)

(We believe in you, Guam professor)

You're like a Guam native.

You like dolphins, right?

- I like them. / - That's it then.

You say you'd take us to see dolphins

but if we don't get to see them, I'll hit you.

If you can't see dolphins, I'll be the dolphin.

- You have to do the dolphin show. / - Yes, I will.

- You have to paint yourself gray. / - Okay.

- I'll paint myself half gray. / - Half white.

- I'll use two tones. / - Yes, two tones.

I'll transform perfectly into a dolphin.

- Water has to spurt from your head. / - Okay.

Make dolphin noises too.

- Okay, okay. / - You have to make that sound.

In Guam, you don't have to sail out too far.

You can see dolphins easily.

Don't worry.

This course is prepared by old man Hwijae.

(Fishing in Guam)

(Snorkeling in Guam)

(Dolphins in Guam)

This is amazing.

(3 things to do in Guam by the Guam professor)

(Hwijae's time)

(Dolphin cruise)

(After racing along the coastal road)

(They meet the blue sea and clear sky)

(Boats are docked at the marina)

- This is great. / - I feel like I'm on vacation.

- Seriously. Amazing. / - We are on vacation.

(She's ecstatic)

I feel like I'm in a foreign country.

Hafa adai.

- Hafa adai. / - Hafa adai.

(They get on the boat to enjoy the Guam ocean)

This is Guam.

Hwijae prepared a lot.

This course is prepared by old man Hwijae.

We'll see dolphins, fish and go snorkeling.

- Hwijae. / - Yes?

I feel like I'm on vacation now.

- This really feels like Guam, right? / - This is great.

(First, they'll have a dolphin tour)

(Hwijae is very excited)

(Here's Battle Trip's youngest)

(Glancing over)

(Sook, look at the camera)

Are you recording?

(I'm excited!)

It feels like yesterday that we were in the studio.

- But we're really here. / - This is nice.

(They get to see a great landscape)

Hwijae, look here.

(Acting silly)

1, 2, 3.

It's so beautiful.

One at a time.

What do you think?

- It does look good. / - Yes! It looks great.

Okay, it looks perfect now.

In 1, 2, 3.

(They enjoy the cool sea breeze)

(They sail for 20 minutes to see the dolphins)

Don't people say it looks pretty

when the hair blows in the wind?

(What Sook imagined)

What is wrong with me?

Actresses look pretty when their hair blows in the wind.

Hwijae, how do I look?

I heard it's pretty when the hair blows in the wind.

(Sook)

You're just "The Slave Hunters."

What's with this?

(They can't wait to see dolphins)

(One man is nervous)

If we don't see dolphins, I'll hit you.

If you don't see dolphins, I'll become one.

- You have to do the dolphin show. / - Okay, I will.

We have to see the dolphin.

(Why did I agree to that?)

Everyone, we're almost there!

Everyone, we can see dolphins soon.

There it is!

- Where? / - Dolphin! Dolphin!

Where?

(The sea looks calm)

(The video is not paused)

(Oh, no)

(1 year ago, Jeju-do host special)

All I see is seagulls.

Dolphins, where are you?

I came to see dolphins.

(Seagulls again?)

(What do we do about Hwijae?)

(Sigh)

(Solemn)

Wait? Isn't that a dolphin?

- Where? Where? / - There!

- Where? Where? / - There!

It jumped! It jumped!

It jumped!

It jumped! It jumped!

Did you see?

- Over there! / - It's jumping!

- They're right here. / - They are.

Wow, I see dolphins here.

- Wow. / - This is no joke.

- Over here, over here. / - What's going on?

(It's unbelievable that they're seeing this)

(A pod of dolphins)

No way.

They're coming here. They're coming here.

(3 dolphins jump out of the water)

Where are they?

(Before their very eyes)

(The dolphins show their new skills)

They're so adorable.

They're playing.

I must be getting old. I'm getting teary.

You know what I mean, right?

(Sikyung, don't cry)

(Before Sikyung cries, they head to the next spot)

(Fulfilled)

(The dolphin tour was successful, 5 stars for sure)

(They head to the fishing spot)

(In the middle of South Pacific Ocean)

(They enjoy the leisure of fishing)

(The sun slowly goes down)

I'm getting bored now.

(It's not easy to catch a fish)

(They've been waiting for 30 minutes without a bite)

- Who suggested we go fishing? / - I'm Sorry.

I'm not giving you points for this.

I give -100 points for fishing.

Let's try one last time and go snorkeling.

(They try fishing one last time)

(Please bite it)

(Right then!)

I got one.

Did you?

Hey, it's a big one.

- What is it? / - I don't know.

Look at the rod bending.

(It's a sign of a big fish)

Did you catch it?

(The rod is bent)

(Hwijae, I want to eat raw fish)

(I trust you, Guam professor)

You caught a rock.

Really?

It got caught on a rock.

Rock?

(Disappointed)

What happened?

What was that? You sounded so confident.

I haven't been fishing because of the kids.

(Sikyung has one last try as well)

(Let's remain calm, it could be a rock)

(Hesitant)

- Look at this. / - Did something bite?

You've got something.

- Wow! / - What is it?

(Sikyung did it in the end)

(They finally caught a fish)

Really?

Sikyung, you did it.

Guam suits Sikyung.

Let's catch two more of these.

It wasn't hard.

Maybe I should be on "The Fishermen and the City."

Let's go snorkeling. It will make up for this.

(Snorkeling)

(The 3 of them get ready for snorkeling)

I think Sikyung doesn't have to put makeup on.

Take your sunglasses off, Sikyung.

I can't tell it's you.

This won't do.

This won't do.

(This is actually Sung Sikyung)

Sikyung, don't worry.

- What kind of style? / - Ray-Ban.

Okay, okay.

I shouldn't do water sports. Because...

People don't recognize me if I take off my glasses.

It will be funnier then.

Sikyung, I will draw one on your face with a marker.

I'll draw glasses on your face with a marker

so you can be comfortable underwater.

When I was in my 20s, I hated things like this.

But... I think it'll be alright to draw it on my face.

I guarantee satisfaction.

(She tries to make it look like he's wearing glasses)

Sook, those are some luxury glasses.

I think Sikyung will hit me.

Sikyung, you look better than you think actually.

Let me introduce my first artwork.

Sung Sikyung and Water Activities.

Take them off.

(He finally reveals his face)

(Amazing)

- Hey, Sikyung. / - She drew it on so well.

- I can't tell. / - She did so well.

- You can't tell at all. / - The glasses are there.

- They're just glasses. / - They're real glasses.

Do you want round glasses?

I have to do it too?

Of course, you have to take off your glasses.

Why me as well?

Let's go with round glasses.

(She tries to get away)

(She got caught)

But I don't wear glasses.

I like it.

- That's good then. / - I like it.

I'm happy.

Let's go.

Why did I start this?

Why We Fight on May 1st - The Haymarket Anarchist Martyrs - Duration: 4:05.

132 years ago, on this day, in the United States, the Federation of Organized

Trades and Labor unions decided to organize a strike for better pay,

better working conditions and an eight hours work day.

In Chicago the steel workers were already on strike for months

then on May 3rd a factory decided to hire

scabs to substitute the organized workers.

Anarchists like August Spies, joined the protest against the scabs but the

police showed up to protect those scabs

and even killed two of the workers on strike.

Spies then wrote a manifesto

against police brutality for the next day protests.

On May 4th in the a HayMarket Square

Samuel Fielden gives a speech in support

of the steel workers in a case wage slavery. After the speech the police

started to disperse the crowd and on that moment someone threw a bomb towards

the police. After that the police started shooting in panic at the crowd even killing

other cops by accident. Because of the bombing the unions were closed hundreds

of organizers were arrested and 8 anarchists were charged with murder and conspiracy

their names were:

Albert Parsons

Adolph Fischer

August Spies

George Engel

Louis Lingg

Samuel Fielden

Michael Schwab

Oscar Neebe

They were tried for a crime that they didn't commit.

The bomber was not known and there was no evidence against them.

Only two of them were at the scene and they were at the podium

visible to the crowd when the bombing occurred. On that day murder was used to

justify the ruling class interest in criminalizing Anarchy.

It was a political trial.

Like the prosecutor said "Anarchy is on trial".

At the end of the trial the verdict was guilty

and the sentence was dead by hanging.

Three asked for clemency

by writing a letter to the governor and got life in prison instead.

Parsons, Spies, Engel, [Lingg], and Fischer were resolute they didn't do any wrong

and therefore they didn't appeal for clemency.

Even though the governor was willing

to stop the hanging he didn't want to go against the industrial capitalists will.

Capitalists like Marshall Field's refused such an option,

he want the anarchists dead.

The media financed by people like Marshall Field's created a

narrative around the idea that neither life nor death property would be safe

until the Anarchists, which they portrayed as vile creatures, were dead.

The newspaper St. Louis Globe said "there are no good anarchists except dead anarchists"

The Chicago Daily News stated:

"the anarchists are amenable to no other reason except that thought by the rifle and the club"

A few months later, one day before the hanging,

On November 10th Lewis link killed himself with a

dynamite cartridge after smoking a cigar. As an anarchist he did not believe the

state had the right to take his life.

On November 11th, known as the Black Friday,

with their heads hooded with ropes around their necks

Parsons, Spies, Engel and Fischer were hanged for a crime that they didn't commit

Before dying Spies said:

«The time will come when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today»

Even though the state convicted them to a crime they didn't commit

They preferred to die then beg for their lives.

Such was the spirit of anarchism then.

That's why we should protest on May 1st,

without ignoring its past.

The first of my shouldn't be celebrated along with our

masters or puppet politicians that have nothing to do with this day.

On this day we shouldn't forget our fallen comrades instead we should remember them by

spreading our ideal: the abolition of authority and private property and to

instigate the spirit and practice of free and voluntary cooperation in the workers.

Like Fischer and Engel shouted before dying: Hurrah for Anarchy!

Shall we still be slaves and work for wages, it is outrageous ♫

has been for ages ♫

How language shapes the way we think | Lera Boroditsky - Duration: 14:13.

So, I'll be speaking to you using language ...

because I can.

This is one these magical abilities that we humans have.

We can transmit really complicated thoughts to one another.

So what I'm doing right now is, I'm making sounds with my mouth

as I'm exhaling.

I'm making tones and hisses and puffs,

and those are creating air vibrations in the air.

Those air vibrations are traveling to you,

they're hitting your eardrums,

and then your brain takes those vibrations from your eardrums

and transforms them into thoughts.

I hope.

(Laughter)

I hope that's happening.

So because of this ability, we humans are able to transmit our ideas

across vast reaches of space and time.

We're able to transmit knowledge across minds.

I can put a bizarre new idea in your mind right now.

I could say,

"Imagine a jellyfish waltzing in a library

while thinking about quantum mechanics."

(Laughter)

Now, if everything has gone relatively well in your life so far,

you probably haven't had that thought before.

(Laughter)

But now I've just made you think it,

through language.

Now of course, there isn't just one language in the world,

there are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world.

And all the languages differ from one another in all kinds of ways.

Some languages have different sounds,

they have different vocabularies,

and they also have different structures --

very importantly, different structures.

That begs the question:

Does the language we speak shape the way we think?

Now, this is an ancient question.

People have been speculating about this question forever.

Charlemagne, Holy Roman emperor, said,

"To have a second language is to have a second soul" --

strong statement that language crafts reality.

But on the other hand, Shakespeare has Juliet say,

"What's in a name?

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Well, that suggests that maybe language doesn't craft reality.

These arguments have gone back and forth for thousands of years.

But until recently, there hasn't been any data

to help us decide either way.

Recently, in my lab and other labs around the world,

we've started doing research,

and now we have actual scientific data to weigh in on this question.

So let me tell you about some of my favorite examples.

I'll start with an example from an Aboriginal community in Australia

that I had the chance to work with.

These are the Kuuk Thaayorre people.

They live in Pormpuraaw at the very west edge of Cape York.

What's cool about Kuuk Thaayorre is,

in Kuuk Thaayorre, they don't use words like "left" and "right,"

and instead, everything is in cardinal directions:

north, south, east and west.

And when I say everything, I really mean everything.

You would say something like,

"Oh, there's an ant on your southwest leg."

Or, "Move your cup to the north-northeast a little bit."

In fact, the way that you say "hello" in Kuuk Thaayorre is you say,

"Which way are you going?"

And the answer should be,

"North-northeast in the far distance.

How about you?"

So imagine as you're walking around your day,

every person you greet,

you have to report your heading direction.

(Laughter)

But that would actually get you oriented pretty fast, right?

Because you literally couldn't get past "hello,"

if you didn't know which way you were going.

In fact, people who speak languages like this stay oriented really well.

They stay oriented better than we used to think humans could.

We used to think that humans were worse than other creatures

because of some biological excuse:

"Oh, we don't have magnets in our beaks or in our scales."

No; if your language and your culture trains you to do it,

actually, you can do it.

There are humans around the world who stay oriented really well.

And just to get us in agreement

about how different this is from the way we do it,

I want you all to close your eyes for a second

and point southeast.

(Laughter)

Keep your eyes closed. Point.

OK, so you can open your eyes.

I see you guys pointing there, there, there, there, there ...

I don't know which way it is myself --

(Laughter)

You have not been a lot of help.

(Laughter)

So let's just say the accuracy in this room was not very high.

This is a big difference in cognitive ability across languages, right?

Where one group -- very distinguished group like you guys --

doesn't know which way is which,

but in another group,

I could ask a five-year-old and they would know.

(Laughter)

There are also really big differences in how people think about time.

So here I have pictures of my grandfather at different ages.

And if I ask an English speaker to organize time,

they might lay it out this way,

from left to right.

This has to do with writing direction.

If you were a speaker of Hebrew or Arabic,

you might do it going in the opposite direction,

from right to left.

But how would the Kuuk Thaayorre,

this Aboriginal group I just told you about, do it?

They don't use words like "left" and "right."

Let me give you hint.

When we sat people facing south,

they organized time from left to right.

When we sat them facing north,

they organized time from right to left.

When we sat them facing east,

time came towards the body.

What's the pattern?

East to west, right?

So for them, time doesn't actually get locked on the body at all,

it gets locked on the landscape.

So for me, if I'm facing this way,

then time goes this way,

and if I'm facing this way, then time goes this way.

I'm facing this way, time goes this way --

very egocentric of me to have the direction of time chase me around

every time I turn my body.

For the Kuuk Thaayorre, time is locked on the landscape.

It's a dramatically different way of thinking about time.

Here's another really smart human trick.

Suppose I ask you how many penguins are there.

Well, I bet I know how you'd solve that problem if you solved it.

You went, "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight."

You counted them.

You named each one with a number,

and the last number you said was the number of penguins.

This is a little trick that you're taught to use as kids.

You learn the number list and you learn how to apply it.

A little linguistic trick.

Well, some languages don't do this,

because some languages don't have exact number words.

They're languages that don't have a word like "seven"

or a word like "eight."

In fact, people who speak these languages don't count,

and they have trouble keeping track of exact quantities.

So, for example, if I ask you to match this number of penguins

to the same number of ducks,

you would be able to do that by counting.

But folks who don't have that linguistic trick can't do that.

Languages also differ in how they divide up the color spectrum --

the visual world.

Some languages have lots of words for colors,

some have only a couple words, "light" and "dark."

And languages differ in where they put boundaries between colors.

So, for example, in English, there's a word for blue

that covers all of the colors that you can see on the screen,

but in Russian, there isn't a single word.

Instead, Russian speakers have to differentiate

between light blue, "goluboy,"

and dark blue, "siniy."

So Russians have this lifetime of experience of, in language,

distinguishing these two colors.

When we test people's ability to perceptually discriminate these colors,

what we find is that Russian speakers are faster

across this linguistic boundary.

They're faster to be able to tell the difference

between a light and dark blue.

And when you look at people's brains as they're looking at colors --

say you have colors shifting slowly from light to dark blue --

the brains of people who use different words for light and dark blue

will give a surprised reaction as the colors shift from light to dark,

as if, "Ooh, something has categorically changed,"

whereas the brains of English speakers, for example,

that don't make this categorical distinction,

don't give that surprise,

because nothing is categorically changing.

Languages have all kinds of structural quirks.

This is one of my favorites.

Lots of languages have grammatical gender;

every noun gets assigned a gender, often masculine or feminine.

And these genders differ across languages.

So, for example, the sun is feminine in German but masculine in Spanish,

and the moon, the reverse.

Could this actually have any consequence for how people think?

Do German speakers think of the sun as somehow more female-like,

and the moon somehow more male-like?

Actually, it turns out that's the case.

So if you ask German and Spanish speakers to, say, describe a bridge,

like the one here --

"bridge" happens to be grammatically feminine in German,

grammatically masculine in Spanish --

German speakers are more likely to say bridges are "beautiful," "elegant"

and stereotypically feminine words.

Whereas Spanish speakers will be more likely to say

they're "strong" or "long,"

these masculine words.

(Laughter)

Languages also differ in how they describe events, right?

You take an event like this, an accident.

In English, it's fine to say, "He broke the vase."

In a language like Spanish,

you might be more likely to say, "The vase broke,"

or, "The vase broke itself."

If it's an accident, you wouldn't say that someone did it.

In English, quite weirdly, we can even say things like,

"I broke my arm."

Now, in lots of languages,

you couldn't use that construction unless you are a lunatic

and you went out looking to break your arm --

(Laughter)

and you succeeded.

If it was an accident, you would use a different construction.

Now, this has consequences.

So, people who speak different languages will pay attention to different things,

depending on what their language usually requires them to do.

So we show the same accident to English speakers and Spanish speakers,

English speakers will remember who did it,

because English requires you to say, "He did it; he broke the vase."

Whereas Spanish speakers might be less likely to remember who did it

if it's an accident,

but they're more likely to remember that it was an accident.

They're more likely to remember the intention.

So, two people watch the same event,

witness the same crime,

but end up remembering different things about that event.

This has implications, of course, for eyewitness testimony.

It also has implications for blame and punishment.

So if you take English speakers

and I just show you someone breaking a vase,

and I say, "He broke the vase," as opposed to "The vase broke,"

even though you can witness it yourself,

you can watch the video,

you can watch the crime against the vase,

you will punish someone more,

you will blame someone more if I just said, "He broke it,"

as opposed to, "It broke."

The language guides our reasoning about events.

Now, I've given you a few examples

of how language can profoundly shape the way we think,

and it does so in a variety of ways.

So language can have big effects,

like we saw with space and time,

where people can lay out space and time

in completely different coordinate frames from each other.

Language can also have really deep effects --

that's what we saw with the case of number.

Having count words in your language,

having number words,

opens up the whole world of mathematics.

Of course, if you don't count, you can't do algebra,

you can't do any of the things

that would be required to build a room like this

or make this broadcast, right?

This little trick of number words gives you a stepping stone

into a whole cognitive realm.

Language can also have really early effects,

what we saw in the case of color.

These are really simple, basic, perceptual decisions.

We make thousands of them all the time,

and yet, language is getting in there

and fussing even with these tiny little perceptual decisions that we make.

Language can have really broad effects.

So the case of grammatical gender may be a little silly,

but at the same time, grammatical gender applies to all nouns.

That means language can shape how you're thinking

about anything that can be named by a noun.

That's a lot of stuff.

And finally, I gave you an example of how language can shape things

that have personal weight to us --

ideas like blame and punishment or eyewitness memory.

These are important things in our daily lives.

Now, the beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us

just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is.

Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000 --

there are 7,000 languages spoken around the world.

And we can create many more --

languages, of course, are living things,

things that we can hone and change to suit our needs.

The tragic thing is that we're losing so much of this linguistic diversity

all the time.

We're losing about one language a week,

and by some estimates,

half of the world's languages will be gone in the next hundred years.

And the even worse news is that right now,

almost everything we know about the human mind and human brain

is based on studies of usually American English-speaking undergraduates

at universities.

That excludes almost all humans. Right?

So what we know about the human mind is actually incredibly narrow and biased,

and our science has to do better.

I want to leave you with this final thought.

I've told you about how speakers of different languages think differently,

but of course, that's not about how people elsewhere think.

It's about how you think.

It's how the language that you speak shapes the way that you think.

And that gives you the opportunity to ask,

"Why do I think the way that I do?"

"How could I think differently?"

And also,

"What thoughts do I wish to create?"

Thank you very much.

(Applause)

(lighthearted music)

- In three months you can...

- Three months?

I haven't got three months. (laughs)

- Right side.

- Hi, my name is Fabio.

We are in my restaurant Figli Del Vesuvio.

I start to work pizza chef when I was 14.

For six month, I work free just for learn this job.

- Tell me how to spin a pizza then.

- I start with plastic pizza.

Two, three hour a day, I was always try.

- And it took you...

After three month, yes, I start to with dough.

If you want, I can show you now.

- Yeah, let's do it.

- This is our dough... - Okay.

- that I make yesterday.

- The dough is light because we do 24-hour fermentation.

(pizza dough slaps)

- The pizza get better.

- So, show me without the pizza.

- When the mean time you put the pizza in the left hand,

you already to turn.

When you finish with left, start with right.

- (laughs) It's not gonna happen.

- I think it's better you start with a cloth.

The right hand, you put in the left.

You start to turn.

All one way, just with the end of finger.

- You make it look so easy.

- (laughs) Yeah, after three months,

for you it will be easy as well.

- Oh, pfft!

- This is it again. (laughs)

- Look at this.

- Okay, right hand, left hand, spin.

- You see?

- I think I'm ready for the dough

^- [Man] Are you sure?

- (laughs) No.

- Pick the dough a little the flour.

Now, do a circular settee.

Start from up to down.

Great.

Take this side, oh, you do the same like before.

Okay, now if you follow also.

- Okay.

- Push.

- Mine is not go very well. (laughs)

- It's hard, but in three months you can.

- Three months?

I haven't got three months.

Right side, like this.

- Spin? - Spin and push on the right,

left, right, left. (laughs)

- Pfft! (moans)

Spin, straight away?

- There you go. - Oh god!

- I can repair it for you. - We can rescue?

Ooh! (bangs)

That's not bad.

- If you put Italian tomato sauce la torrente.

- What's in the tomato sauce?

- It's tomato, it's Italian one.

A little bit of basil, and we put this mozzarella

we receive two time a week from Italy.

E a touch of Parmesan cheese.

And after, we put olive oil from Puglia,

is out of Italy as well.

- Wow.

- This time, we take the tool, add to the fire.

This is a proper Neapolitan oven.

All the material is come from Napoli.

The floor of the oven is stone from volcano.

I make the best dough, if I cook in the electric oven,

it change the taste.

Think of the pizza like Caesar.

There we go.

- How long will that cook for?

- Now the pizza is cooking 90 seconds.

- 90 seconds?

Wow.

- We check is it burnt or no.

When cook already, I take the peel and I leave it down.

It's don't burn the pizza. - Okay.

- This is margarita, is a proper Neapolitan pizza.

Come over there. - Okay.

- Turn, and go slowly, slowly.

Now start to turn.

Okay. (laughs)

- Ooh. - Let me see

if it cook or down, no.

Is still uncook.

Okay, we wait.

- It's so cool.

- Check the pizza again.

Now take off.

Turn for this side.

Is okay, is not bad for kids.

- Not bad for kids?

- It's kid-sized, yeah.

- I think it looks good.

I mean it's not as perfect as round as yours,

but what do you think?

- For the first time is not bad.

Just here is a little bit more deep,

here is a little bit more thin.

Let me see how you cook.

Is good, maybe is better than my one. (laughs)

Let's go for taste.

- Let's go for it.

- Like this, don't do like this because everything go down.

- This is the proper way to eat it.

- In Naples we don't use knife and fork.

- Mm, that's revolutionized how I eat pizza.

This is keeping it hot!

- And you can feel the taste of the cheese,

the taste of the basil, you can feel

the taste of the Parmesan.

- It's so light and crispy and juicy?

I've never eaten a pizza and thought it's juicy.

- Maybe you eat the pizza but not Neapolitan pizza.

- Mm!

- I want to show you how we eat in Naples.

^Pizza portagoglio and in English is pizza wallet, eat.

- Oh my god. (laughs)

- We eat in the street, when you do shopping,

when we do everything.

^A portafoglio - A por-ta-foy-yo.

^- Portafoglio - Pizza a por-at-foy-oh?

- Portagoflio, yeah, is okay! (cheers)
