Youtube daily do Dec 2 2017

Hi guys!

This video is about five things to do in Amsterdam.

There are a ton of things to choose from but these are five that I think are worthy of your time

and also don't take a ton of time.

So if you already have an itinerary planned, these are things that you can just slot in as little extras.

And number one is to do a boat cruise of the canals.

I feel like this almost goes without saying because when you think of Amsterdam

I'm guessing the first thing that comes to mind are obviously those quaint, historic canals

and there are a ton of different boat companies that you can choose from.

You should get a historical overview of the whole city canal system

as well as specific buildings that you'll pass on the route.

You get a completely different perspective from the water

and I think it really is something that you need to do while you're in the city.

If you're wondering if it's worth the money I definitely think that it is.

Number two is to see Amsterdam by bike.

I feel like after you've seen it from the water, the other must-see perspective

is from the back of a bicycle.

You have two options, of course.

You can either rent a bike yourself, if you're confident.

If you're not, I wouldn't recommend it because biking in Amsterdam is serious business

and there are a lot of people on the road.

I actually got a ride.

So I was staying with amazing friends who said that even better than doing the bicycling yourself

is to sit on the back so that you can have the pleasure of looking around.

So they very kindly gave Marc and I a ride through the city

and it was one of my favourite memories, honestly, just being able to look around

and you still feel a part of it being in the bike lane.

So definitely either rent a bike yourself or, if you can manage it, try to get a ride.

I think one cheek is on now!

Number three is to visit the Flower Market or the Bloememarkt

and this began in 1862 and technically this is a floating market

because all of the stalls are floating on the canal

because of course they are - this is Amsterdam.

The Flower Market really evokes those old days when the market was supplied daily by boat

and it's a great place to just look around or if you want to buy some souvenirs

you can get seeds or bulbs to take home.

Just make sure they have a customs stamp clearly marked on the package

to make sure you don't have an issue at the border.

Number four might sound kind of funny but it's to order food at a vending machine

and apparently fast food wasn't fast enough for the Dutch because they've made it even faster.

You just choose whatever hot snack you want,

including a lot of those Dutch fried foods that I talked about in my last video

where I tried a bunch of delicious Dutch food.

I will link that up here.

Kaassouffle, krokets, you can get hamburgers and sausages.

They're all in there.

You just pick whichever hot snack you want, put your money in the slot, and away you go.

Easy peasy.

Number five is to take a photo with the I Amsterdam sign

and it's usually crawling with people

so the chances of getting a photo with nobody else in it are extremely unlikely

but I actually think that's part of the fun because this is also a great people watching spot.

There are two signs in the city but the best one is at the back of the Rijksmuseum

which you'll find on Museumplein.

It's more than 2 metres tall and the slogan is 23.5 metres wide.

There's also a set of letters at the Schipol Airport which you can find if you arrive by air

and there's a third sign that actually changes location.

Sometimes it's at fashion shows, at fairs, at festivals, and other events

so you can watch for that one too.

The term I Amsterdam actually began as a marketing campaign

but now it's been adopted by locals - who, of course, have been greeting people from all over the world

and still greet millions of tourists every year

and it's kind of a way to say, hey, Amsterdam isn't just for us.

It's for everybody.

So those are five things that I thought were fun to do in Amsterdam

and worth recommending to you.

Learning French As An Adult: How NOT to do it! My French learning story (English subtitles) - Duration: 9:39.

Hello everyone! As promised

I am going to film this video in French

to celebrate my 1000 subscribers!

1000! It's crazy!

Be kind with me please and please excuse my New Zealand accent

Let's go!

Although I am not at all fluent or completely fluid in French, it gives me the occasion

to get over my fears one step at a time by speaking French with you

I hope that I will watch this video in 2 years and say

Wow, I have made so much progress in French!

And as you have understood

The subject of this video is indeed my level of French

and how I went about learning French as an adult

starting absolutely from scratch.

I had the idea from one of my subscribers, Emma

who used the Ask Me Anything form

which I put

each time in the description box of my videos by the way

And Emma asked me

Firstly, Thank You Emma for your question

But I am not sure that I am the

role model that you are looking for because

I was a very bad student

when it came to learning French

But as I did all the things you shouldn't do

I am going to answer you by explaining all the things

Al the things you SHOULDN'T do

so that you can French much faster than I.

So a bit of history, I arrived in France

4 years ago now and didn't speak a word

of French. Okay, I'm exaggerating a little

I learnt a few words and expressions

Bonjour, Merci

S'il vous plaît

I took evening courses for 4 weeks

so I knew numbers and colours

Which weren't very useful

the very first weeks! My mother-in-law there like

"Rosie, have you eaten enough?"and me

in a total panic

"rouge, six" (red, six)

So I didn't learn anything at school

and then when I arrived in France I made matters worse

by doing the following things:

The first mistake I made was

being too scared to speak! I was

incredibly timid, I felt stupid

I felt like a small child and so I stayed

in my comfort zone, speaking English.

Of course I spoke a little French when

I went to the bakery or to the pharmacy

But aside from that, I was never

pushed to speak French

and i should have pushed myself actually.

I studied in English, interned in English

built relationships with others

in English

Other expats of course but even with French

people in my course who were bilingual.

Even if I started

to have some French words/phrases in mind

If there was a

1% risk

of making a mistake

I prefered to stay in English.

And as I was shy, it suited me perfectly

and in the end

I took the easiest route

It seems obvious but you shouldn't

do that - you need to dare, speak

dare again, make lots of mistakes

Nobody minds!

The second thing to NOT do

is to not work in your French

every single day.

As I didn't learn languages at school, I didn't know

how to learn French! And I thought for a long time

that if only I had the academic theory

the grammar fundamentals

I could start speaking afterwards

The problem with this plan is that

we never find time

to do that in life, especially if we work

or study! So I was spending

one hour max

per week to learn French

No no no! You need to integrate French

into your daily routine as much as possible.

Listen to the podcasts CoffeeBreak French

or News in Slow French during your daily commute

Do a bit of Duolingo during your coffee break, speak

as often as possible, listen to French music

while you are at the gym or running

Change your Netflix settings and watch your series in French

firstly with English subtitles and then with French ones

Try to make at least 5 points of contact with the language per day

That's how we make progress!

The 3rd thing to not do is not make the most of

your French boyfriend or

your French girlfriend.

People say it's the best way in the world to learn

French, to fall in love with a Frenchman

or a Frenchwomen

Sure, if you speak in French! Don't do as I did

I've been with my boyfriend for 5 years

and we speak exclusively in English

And of course his English is now

perfect and he's lost his French accent

My French, however, still needs

a little loving!

I tried several times to change

with my French boyfriend but I have the impression that

we don't know eachother

We lose our personal jokes,

our personalities...it's a vicious circle because

I have the impression that I'm not quite able

to be funny in French for example

But if I had spent the last 5 years

speaking French with him, we might expect

that I would have been able to by now

get my personality back.

The fourth and final

thing that I wanted to share with you

is to avoid speaking in French

at work like if it were the plague!

Again, I felt silly in French

as if I were

Less intelligent

Less impressive, less impactful, less able to negotiate

for example and it IS true, it's the case.

However, without working in

French, we never learn

such subtilities

in a book for example

You need to work in French to learn

how to work in French. It's as

simple as that. So don't do as I did

by resting in your comfort zone

and by targeting jobs in English

or your mother tongue

But dare to work in French

as I aim to do for my next role

Finally!

So all that just to say that it took me

4 years to start speaking like this but if you're

not a bad student like I was

you could count on it taking more like 2 years

if you continue to work in English

or study but if you work in French for example

or you immerse yourself completely

it's more like 6 months to a year

And of course the French respond to you

from time to time in English but my advice

is simply to continue speaking in French

Even if you feel silly

It's the principle! But in general I find

the French very generous on this point.

They compliment you a lot all the time

on your level of French, even if you're a beginner

My colleagues tell me a lot that I made progress

and that my accent is so charming

that it's not a problem

They're just so happy

that you're making an effort to learn their language that

they give you almost too much encouragement! It's so kind!

So that's all!

If you can stand my French and

you want me to continue

and want me to do, I don't know, one video per month or something like that

Please give me a thumbs up

or write a comment below!

Thanks again Emma for your question

Love you guys and see you in the next video

See you soon!

I'M GOING TO (ATTEMPT TO) DO VLOGMAS! - Duration: 2:48.

Surprise!

Hello, I'm Rogan and as you obviously saw from the title, this is Vlogmas.

Vlogmas, for those who don't know, is similar to the idea of VEDA (Vlog Every Day August/April).

Or VEDIM, what I did, Vlog Every Day In May.

Vlogmas is a vlog every day up to the day of Christmas.

I will end on the 24th because I will be flying out to Alaska, visiting family.

So... I want to end the day before (Christmas).

I don't really want to think about doing something on Christmas itself.

So, you will be getting a video from me every day for 24 days... Hopefully.

I was thinking why not do this because I enjoyed doing VEDIM.

However, this probably will be a little bit different. I will try to be more holiday themed?

Maybe? I don't know. I'm not sure.

This [behind me] is probably the most festive I will get in this whole month.

Because my family isn't going to bother with Christmas decorations. We're not having Christmas here.

I will attempt to do some holiday-themed stuff but...will I? I don't know.

So, I just wanted to announce that I'm doing Vlogmas and keep an eye out for videos!

Please, let me know of any holiday-themed stuff that I could do. I need ideas please! *chuckles*

I will still be doing some regular videos too, like ASL Ponderings, Queer History, books.

So you know, tomorrow!

I don't know what I'm doing to myself this month. Honestly.

So I'm doing Vlogmas, so that's up to the 24th.

But I'm also doing the Holiday Adventure-a-thon, I will make a video about that next week probably.

And that will be from the 13th to the 24th.

And I'm also thinking I want to try to do 12 Days of Christmas, I will be drawing the 12 days of Christmas.

Starting on Christmas day, so... Basically, I am all booked for this month!

We'll see how this goes. A very short video today, but I just wanted to let you know what's up this month.

And... I hope you enjoy this journey?

Do You Need Nitrates in Bacon? | How to Wet Cure Bacon - Duration: 5:51.

Today on the Grill Top Experience we are going to wet cure bacon and answer two questions

people had about my last bacon video.

#1 Do you really need all that salt and #2 Is pink curing salt necessary?

This pork belly has already been skinned and is about 9 lbs.

I'm going to cut it in half, which fits perfectly in a gallon zipper bag.

I'm going to make one with pink curing salt and the other without to see what the differences

are because some of you are concerned about the health effects of the curing salt.

In a gallon zipper bag, add one half cup of water and then 1/4 cup of salt.

Don't forget 2Tbs of brown sugar like I did.

You can add up to 1/4 cup if you like a sweeter bacon.

Mix it all up to create the brine, fold over the edges of the zipper bag and slide one

of the pork bellies in.

Get as much air out of the bag as you can before sealing it.

Then repeat the process for the other belly by adding the water, salt, sugar, and this

one has curing salt.

I'm going to mark each one so I can remember which is which and we can see the difference.

Then don't turn it over or you'll have permanent marker all over your counter top.

Don't worry, a little rubbing alcohol and she'll never know.

Put the zipper bags in another container to catch leaks and put it in the fridge for six

days to cure.

It's well worth the wait because it is homemade.

Once each day take the bacon and flip them so the one on top is on the bottom and upside

down.

This ensures that the bacon cures evenly.

You'll notice that the bags will have more liquid in them as the bacon cures.

That means it is working.

After the six days are up take the bellies out of the bag and give them a good rinse

to remove the brine and keep them from getting too salty.

I've placed a toothpick in the pink salt belly so I can keep them straight.

You'll notice that the belly with the curing salt is pink and the one without is a little

gray.

It's a good idea to cut off a piece and fry it up to see if it is as salty as you

like.

Many recipes recommend soaking the bellies in clean water for 30 minutes to remove as

much of the brine as possible.

Take them out of the water and give them an enhanced pat down with a paper towel.

Make sure you get both sides.

Next I'll grab my big plastic bin and place a cooling rack at the bottom.

This will provide good airflow around the bellies and help them form a pellicle which

will help them absorb the smoke.

I like peppered bacon and I'm adding about one tablespoon of pepper to each one.

Feel free to pile it on since you'll be eating a thin slice.

After that, throw it in the fridge without a lid for one day to dry out.

I got up early the next morning to fire up the Ugly Drum Smoker.

I've learned from experience that it's easier to get the lower temperatures required

for smoking bacon by starting before the sun comes up.

I've got a chimney with about 15 briquettes going, which should make it easy to keep the

temperature around 200 degrees F or 95 C. 200 degrees farenheit might be difficult to

maintain for some smokers.

It might be a good idea to give it a test run if you aren't sure.

Once the charcoal is ashed over I'll toss it in the fuel bin and let the smoker preheat

for about an hour so all of the bitter smoke burns off.

Then the only thing to do is to toss the bellies on the smoker for 2 - 4 hours until they reach

an internal temperature of 145 degrees.

To my surprise, these were done in exactly two hours and I took them inside to admire.

The bellies came out fantastic each of them with a mahogany color.

There was no visible difference between the two.

After they've cooled she it's time to wrap them in plastic wrap and throw them in

fridge to firm up for slicing.

After four hours or more get out your fancy cordless slicer and cut the slices as thick

or as thin as you'd like.

These were a bit soft and I should have waited longer to slice them.

Now to see what the curing salt did.

You'll notice the bacon on the left is a little grey near the bottom of the fat cap

and the bacon on the right is pink throughout.

That's the only difference we could find.

I might skip the curing salt next time since botulism can't grow in the fridge.
