Equal Temperament

When human beings perceive sounds that are harmonious with each other in nature

the art we call "music" on behalf of started.

People have realized that some voices are more compatible with each other.

The sounds that are very compatible with one, or almost the same, are called octaves

In addition to this

sounds that are different from one another

but still very harmonious have also begun to be noticed.

The first harmonious sound that is perceived by humans is what we call a perfect fifth today.

Pythagoras made the first discoveries in this area.

Pythagoras explained these harmonious voices with certain ratios.

The notes we know today are derived from these ratios.

For more detailed information, I suggest you follow chapter 6 of the Sesten Müziğe Trt Documentary.

The notes are derived in the same logic as the circle of fifths

and there are a total of 12 notes.

These 12 different notes are the basis of classical music

and are called chromatic scales.

But in antique music, all of these notes are not used,

concentrated in voices with simpler proportions

which are thought to be more compatible with one another.

Different modes and scales are made from

the seven notes that seemed to be most harmonious.

These 7 sounds is called diatonic scale.

Amplitude.

When you're looking at a two dimensional waveform display,

amplitude is the height of that waveform.

For audio signals, this equates to the sounds of loudness.

A quiet sound, like a whisper, will have a small amplitude,

while a sound with a lot of energy like a jet engine has a larger amplitude.

A good metaphor for amplitude is altitude.

We measure the height of mountains as being a certain number of feet

above sea level, and the depths and valleys of the oceans

to be below sea level.

Just like sound, mountains can be formed by two elements colliding.

For sound, it might be a finger plucking the string or striking a key.

And in regard to mountains, it would be two tectonic plates

running into each other.

Depending on how much energy is behind these collisions,

the resulting sound will have a varying degree of loudness,

which is equivalent to its amplitude.

In a way, you can visualize a mountain's amplitude just by looking up.

Imagine how loud that collision must have been.
