hey guys it's Katie, am I sitting on my bed in the corner of the room because I
watched too many ghost videos and I scared myself? Yep :)
Today I'm thinking about 2019 it's the 12th of December I just exposed myself if
it takes me a million years to upload this. So I'm gonna tell you if it is your
goal to start a YouTube channel in 2019 how to go about it, I'm not going to tell
you how to be famous because... hello! I will give you some tips on how to start
because I've been doing it for... I will be going into my third year making videos
maybe, I'm not sure, I have no idea but point is I'm doing it. I do it regularly
enough, I feel like I have enough authority to tell you at least how to
upload, but first I'm gonna tell you a little bit about my plans for 2019 and
this channel. Next year I am still gonna be in Arizona until the summer and then
I'm gonna go back home to England and I'm gonna start third year at University,
so I'm gonna be in Brighton again and I'm gonna be writing a dissertation and
probably crying a lot sleeping a lot... yeah. But that said I also have a
schedule that I kind of want to stick to I'm gonna try it out and whether it
works we'll find out, and I'm not a fan of waiting until the new year to do things
because um I'm just not a fan of waiting so I might try and start doing it soon
but as you know I'm travelling a lot in the next week so it's gonna be crazy. So
I'm hoping to do a creepy video once a week whether that's telling a story from
somebody else or telling a story from my own life or just talking about something
creepy and then my friend Amanda suggested a weekly vlog so I might try
that out but to be honest my life isn't that interesting I just thought that
vlogging was fun - I want to see how that goes.
To be honest I've tried it in the past and it's not gone very well but you know
we'll see. And then if third day we'll just be
reserved for whatever else I want to film because I generally just do
whatever I feel like doing so if there's something that doesn't fit into those
categories... So that's three videos a week which is a lot of videos when you are
also doing a dissertation and travelling a lot
and have other responsibilities and problems in life so that's why I'm not
gonna promise to stick to it but I'm gonna test it out and see how it goes. I
also might change my channel name by which I mean I will be Katie something
and I think I know what that's gonna be, I've been thinking a while because just
being Katie I feel like I feel like if you're trying to search for me just
searching Katie does not help you, so I'm gonna add a second name and I think I
know what its gonna be because it's basically already my name and it also
means something else to me but uh you'll find out what that is if I firmly decide
on it and change my channel name in 2019 or right before 2019 because I don't
want to wait. So speaking of not waiting here are my tips for starting a YouTube
channel in 2019! The first tip, and these are not in any particular order I've
just written down a list that I have in front of me and- I- that's it. The first
tip is don't wait, people wait to have nice equipment, people wait to have
expensive equipment from like filming stuff to lights to editing software and
once you have all that sometimes people wait to have followers before they
upload which makes no sense because what are people gonna subscribe to you for
when you don't have anything? I started off with exactly zero subscribers and
maybe asked my friends to join and got up to a solid ten maybe before I
uploaded anything, and then I really struggled to upload actually and my
first video is private now because one person made a sarky comment and I was
like, *dramatic music* "cancel it! Delete it! I don't want to be on the internet anymore!" maybe I'll link
to it and then you'll be able to see it from here but I won't make it public
I'll make it like unlisted. If you wait for subscribers you're gonna be waiting
a long time because nobody's gonna subscribe to you until you have content
for them to subscribe for. If you wait for expensive equipment you don't know
how long you're gonna be waiting and you don't know if you're gonna spend all of
that money on fancy things and then actually decide that this isn't for you
and it's not something you enjoy as much as you thought you would enjoy. I mean I
don't know I don't know what your financial situation is but personally I
could not straight-up buy a camera and lighting and a microphone and editing
software I still only have one out of those four things. Use what you have!
When I started I fortunately had an old camera and an old tripod that belonged to
my dad because my dad uses them for work, and that camera was not the best quality.
I use natural lighting given to me by the sun and also that ugly light on my
ceiling, that's why it's not great, and I just used the microphone inside my
camera. And like I said I used to use my dad's old camera and now I have one that
I got as a present. And the editing software that I use is called Shotcut,
it's not the best in the world and it sometimes it does crash sometimes it's a
little bit buggy but the point is it's free and it basically does everything
that you could do on Windows Movie Maker back in the day which is probably what I
used to edit my like first videos, um... before they discontinued it which was extremely
rude. Shotcut, and you can... do all the things that I do in my videos with it. So
once you have a camera and editing software you're basically all set up you
don't need to wait for any more fancy equipment and you can start filming so
my next tip is to just... *whispers* just do it.
Shia: make your dreams come true! Just do it!
I know that it's
scary and I know that you're probably not gonna like your first video that
much and I know it's gonna be weird to talk to a camera and you're gonna feel
really awkward - this might not apply to you if you can get straight into it
great good for you, but you might get started and find that you feel really
awkward and then you're editing it and you hate looking at your face and you
have to keep pausing the video and seeing your own face in weird positions
mid-sentence - yeah we're all going through it!
But just even if you are not the biggest fan just upload it because it's practice,
actually to be honest if you wanted to you could start filming and making
videos and then never upload them until you feel comfortable, the point is just
to start and just to practice and find out what you like doing and what you
don't like doing and just figure it out as you go because that's the best
way that you're gonna learn your own style. And leading on from that tip
number three is, I don't know if this is tip number three to be honest I have
lost count, don't listen to people that say you can't or shouldn't do it. I don't
know if you want to do this for like a job, if you clicked on this and you're
still listening to me talk about how to get started you're probably not thinking
that far ahead but maybe you are, either way there are
going to be people that say that you can't do it there are gonna be people
that say that that's dumb there are gonna be people that say that's not a
real hobby that's not a real job get your life together!
you can't start a channel in 2019, good lord, you've missed your window! Here's the
thing maybe if you wanted to start a company selling iPhone 2 cases you
would be a little bit behind the Internet is like the upcoming industry I
mean I'm not I'm not a businesswoman I'm no economy person but I'm pretty sure
that out of all the media... mediums... TV, radio, the internet if you gave a child a
choice between the three of those and I'm talking like maybe a 10 year old in
2019 which one are they gonna pick? It's not the radio and it's probably not TV
because all their favourite things like fortnite and minecraft, all these
massive things that blew up in recent years are from the internet and the
internet I think is only gonna keep getting bigger and bigger and I don't
know what's next after the internet I don't know what comes after it but what
I do know is that it's still evolving and it's still growing and there is
still space for new creators and new people on this platform. There is no
reason you shouldn't just get started now and most
youtubers uplift each other and really like, wanna encourage new creators but
there are some out there that are gonna tell you not to get started and they're
chatting shite! You do you and don't worry about what other people are gonna say
about it. And this includes people in your life too because I am still scared
share my videos on Instagram because I have people from school following me and
people in school we're not very nice to me
and now I'm like, "what if they think it's silly what if they laugh about it
what if they share my videos and they all make fun of me" as if it matters! I
never see these people but it's still in my head that they're gonna make fun of
me and therefore I shouldn't let them know that these videos exist and I'd
like to work on that because I I'm not taking my own advice because my advice
would be to ignore that and just put it any way you want and f what anyone else
has to say about it, do you, but you know I understand why that's difficult
because I'm not over my own apprehension about that yet.
Wow I'm doing really well at segueing my own points because the next point is
about social media and it's about making friends. One of the main ways that I kind
of grew my audience in the first... in the beginning one of the main ways that I
kind of grew my audience in the beginning and one of the most valuable
things to me and I think personally one of the best things about creating is
that there's a community behind it and you can talk to people there and make
friends there, wow :) as you know I don't post on Instagram because I just told
you why but that's not the only thing that you can use I actually used Twitter
a lot, I used to post in the hashtags #smallyoutuberarmy and something else I
will put them on the screen. I could post my video and people would see it that
way or I'd say hey this is the link to my channel leave me the link to yours
and then I'd go through and I'd subscribe to the ones I'm interested in
and hopefully they would subscribe to me. Sidenote:
subscribe for subscribe, sub for sub, that's what it's called I don't know how
old am i? S4S, sub for sub I don't recommend it.
YouTube doesn't like it when you do that and if they find that you're doing it
they might terminate your account so I don't recommend that also because if you
have a bunch of people subscribed to you that just subscribed so that you'd
subscribe to them they're not gonna watch your videos because they don't
care about your content and I bet you don't watch their videos because you
don't care about their content and it goes both ways, so really you're not
gaining anything from doing that anyway. I also share mine a lot on tumblr but
that's because that's where most of my friends online come from and you know
will tumblr still exists in 2019? I don't know we are five days away from
tumblr banning the female presenting nipple and I am not sure how that's
gonna go down. That is how to get started, if you want to know how to succeed and
be famous on YouTube I suggest you watch somebody else but if you want to know
how to just start and be a small youtuber because everybody on this
platform has to be a small youtuber in the beginning - everybody - so if you wanna
know how to do that *chime* you're welcome. As always I hope that I see you really
really soon and I thank you for being here from the bottom of my heart because
it means so much to me and actually we have like 50 more people here than we
did the last time I uploaded and that's really fast growth for me so thank you
all so much for coming over and for watching my videos I appreciate you to
the moon and back a thousand million times that's a lot
but it's true. Thank you for being here so much and I will see you really really
soon. Peace!
