Chevrolet has pulled the wraps off the new 2019 Camaro ZL1 1LE, which retains the front fascia of the pre-facelift model and adds an updated version of the 10-speed automatic transmission in the options menu
When fitted with the 10-speed automatic –a first for the Camaro ZL1 1LE-, the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE claims to be "several seconds" faster on longer tracks like the Nurburgring than the six-speed manual model, thanks to its unique calibration for the 1LE package
Chevrolet has tuned the transmission, the electronic limited slip differential and the performance traction management specifically for the 2019 Camaro ZL1 1LE
Even the adaptive Multimatic DSSV dampers have been recalibrated to accommodate the quicker shift changes in weight transfer
In addition, there's a new oil pan and an extra cooling duct for the steering gear
"Adding an automatic transmission is another example of the Camaro portfolio delivering what customers want
This ultimate 1LE is another appealing option that is true to its racing heritage," said Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet passenger car and crossover marketing
Under the bulging bonnet still lies Chevy's 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine, producing a colossal 650hp and 650lb-ft of torque
The 1LE package adds a carbon rear wing, model-specific air deflectors and dive planes on the front, a set of lightweight forged aluminum wheels that are an inch wider than the standard ZL1 wheels, thinner rear glass and a fixed-back rear seat
All together result in a weight saving of more than 50 lbs compared to the standard ZL1 Coupe
Chevrolet is asking $7,500 for the ZL1 1LE Track Performance package option, on top of an unofficial $64,195 base price for the 2019 Camaro ZL1

HAMILTON BUT WE SUCK :v - Duration: 4:00.
Alexander Hamilton Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton
How does a b*stard, orphan
son of a wh*re and a Scotsman
dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean
By providence, impoverished, in squalor
grow up to be a hero and a scholar?
The 10 dollar
Founding father without a father
Got a lot farther by working a lot harder
by being a lot smarter
By being a self-starter
By 14
They placed him in charge of a trading charter
And everyday while slaves were being slaughtered and carted away
Across the waves he struggled and kept his guard up
Inside he was longing for something to be a part of
The brother was ready to beg, steal, borrow or barter
Then a hurricane came
and devastation reigned
Our man saw his future drip, dripping down the drain
Put a pencil to his temple
connected it to his brain
And he wrote his first refrain a testament to his pain
Well the word got around
They said "This kid is insane, man!"
Took up a collection just to send him to the mainland
Get your education
don't forget from whence you came
And the world's gonna know your name.
What's your name man?
Alexander Hamilton
My name is Alexander Hamilton
And there's a million thing I haven't done
But just you wait just you wait
When he was 10, his father split
full of it, debt ridden
Two years later see Alex and his mother bed-ridden
Half-dead
sitting in their own sick the scent thick
And Alex got better but his mother went quick
Moved in with a cousin the cousin committed suicide
Left him with nothing but ruined pride something new inside
A voice saying
"Alex you gotta fend for yourself"
He started retreating and reading every treatise on the shelf
There woulda been nothing left to do
for someone less astute
He woulda been dead and destitute
without a cent of restutition
Started working, clerking for his late mother's landlord
Trading sugar cane and rum and all the things he can't afford
Scanning for every book he can get his hands on
Planning for the future
see him now as he stands on the bow of a ship
headed for a new land
In New York you can be a new man
In New York you can be a new man Just you wait
In New York you can be a new man Just you wait
In New York you can be a new man
In New York (New York)
Just you wait!
Alexander Hamilton (Alexander Hamilton)
We're waiting in the wings for you (waiting in the wings for you)
You could never back down
You never learned to take your time
Oh, Alexander Hamilton (Alexander Hamilton)
when America sings for you
Will they know what you overcame?
Will they know you rewrote the game?
The world will never be same, oh
The ship is in the harbor now
See if you can spot him
Another immigrant coming up from the bottom
His enemies destroyed his rep
America forgot him
Lafayette and Hercules Mulligan: We fought with him
John Laurens: Me? I died for him
George Washington: Me? I trusted him
Angelica and Eliza Schuyler: Me? I loved him
Aaron Burr: And me?
I'm the damn fool that shot him.
There's a million thing I haven't done
But just you wait
What's your name man?

Kevin Hart Sends 'Prayers' to Jussie Smollett — But Faces Backlash in Wake of Homophobic Tweets - Ne - Duration: 3:41.
Kevin Hart has joined the chorus of celebrities speaking out after Jussie Smollett was the victim of an apparent violent hate crime
The actor, 39, sent Smollett well-wishes in an Instagram post late Tuesday, encouraging the Empire star to "stand strong
" Get push notifications with news, features and more. Follow Following You'll get the latest updates on this topic in your browser notifications
"Sending prayers your way @jussiesmollett ….This is unbelievably sad," Hart captioned a photo of Smollett, 36
"Why are we going backwards….this is disgusting. We as people have to do better. WTF is going on the world???? Why are we falling in love with hate???? God damn it people…
Choose love…I repeat…Choose love. I will forever choose love and I will continue to teach my kids how to do the same
Stand strong brother." However, Hart received some criticism for the message in the wake of the comedian's past homophobic tweets that resurfaced last month and caused him to step down from hosting the Oscars
He later apologized. A number of social media users pointed to the attack on Smollett as an example of why Hart's past controversial jokes were widely criticized
"This is why someone's jokes about beating their gay son were never funny," wrote TV writer Ira Madison III
"Do you see why the jokes weren't funny now?" wrote another Twitter user. "This is your reminder that his jokes reflect actual attitudes that produce what happened to Jussie," wrote another
At arounda.m. local time in Chicago on Tuesday, Smollett went to the hospital after he was the victim of an apparent hate crime
The Chicago Police Department confirmed in a statement that a member of the hit Fox show was involved in a "racially-charged assault and battery," though they did not name Smollett
"A 36 year old man was walking … when two unknown offenders approached him and gained his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him," the statement read
"The offenders began to batter the victim with their hands about the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim
At some point during the incident, one of the offenders wrapped a rope around the victim's neck
The offenders fled the scene." A Chicago P.D. spokesperson told PEOPLE that no arrests have been made and there are no solid suspects at this time

What does it mean that Jesus fulfilled the law, but did not abolish it? | GotQuestions.org - Duration: 6:01.
Today's question is, "What does it mean that Jesus fulfilled the law, but did not
abolish it?"
In this video I'll answer that question from a biblical perspective.
Afterwards, as always, I'll share some helpful resources, so stick around until the end.
Jesus said, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have
not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the
least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished"
(Matthew 5:17–18).
This important statement of our Lord gives us insight into His mission and the character
of God's Word.
Jesus' declaration that He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, not to abolish them,
obviously contains two statements in one.
There is something Jesus did and something He did not do.
At the same time, Jesus emphasized the eternal nature of the Word of God.
Jesus goes out of His way to promote the authority of the Law of God.
He did not come to abolish the Law, regardless of what the Pharisees accused Him of.
In fact, Jesus continues His statement with a commendation for those who teach the Law
accurately and hold it in reverence: "Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of
these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven,
but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven"
(Matthew 5:19).
Note the qualities that Jesus attributes to the Word of God, referenced as "the Law
and the Prophets": First) The Word is everlasting; it will outlast the natural world.
Second) The Word was written with intent; it was meant to be fulfilled.
Third) The Word possesses plenary authority; even the smallest letter of it is established.
Fourth) The Word is faithful and trustworthy; "everything" it says will be accomplished.
No one hearing Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount could doubt His commitment to
the Scriptures.
Consider what Jesus did not do in His ministry.
In Matthew 5:17, Jesus says that He did not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets.
In other words, Jesus' purpose was not to abrogate the Word, dissolve it, or render
it invalid.
The Prophets will be fulfilled; the Law will continue to accomplish the purpose for which
it was given (see Isaiah 55:10–11).
Next, consider what Jesus did do.
Jesus says that He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets.
In other words, Jesus' purpose was to establish the Word, to embody it, and to fully accomplish
all that was written.
"Christ is the culmination of the law" (Romans 10:4).
The predictions of the Prophets concerning the Messiah would be realized in Jesus; the
holy standard of the Law would be perfectly upheld by Christ, the strict requirements
personally obeyed, and the ceremonial observances finally and fully satisfied.
Jesus Christ fulfilled the Prophets in that, in His first coming alone, He fulfilled hundreds
of prophecies concerning Himself.
Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law in at least two ways: as a teacher and as a doer.
He taught people to obey the Law, and He obeyed the Law Himself.
In living a perfect life, Jesus fulfilled the moral laws; in His sacrificial death,
Jesus fulfilled the ceremonial laws.
Christ came not to destroy the old religious system but to build upon it; He came to finish
the Old Covenant and establish the New.
Jesus came not to destroy the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them.
In fact, the ceremonies, sacrifices, and other elements of the Old Covenant were "only
a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves" (Hebrews 10:1).
The tabernacle and temple were "holy places made with hands," but they were never meant
to be permanent; they were but "copies of the true things" (Hebrews 9:24).
The Law had a built-in expiration date, being filled as it was with "external regulations
applying until the time of the new order" (Hebrews 9:10).
In His fulfillment of the Law and Prophets, Jesus obtained our eternal salvation.
No more were priests required to offer sacrifices and enter the holy place.
Jesus has done that for us, once and for all.
By grace through faith, we are made right with God: "He forgave us all our sins, having
canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he
has taken it away, nailing it to the cross" (Colossians 2:14).
There are some who argue that, since Jesus did not "abolish" the Law, then the Law
is still in effect—and still binding on New Testament Christians.
But Paul is clear that the believer in Christ is no longer under the Law: "We were held
in custody under the Law, locked up until faith should be revealed.
So the Law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian" (Galatians 3:23–25).
We are not under the Mosaic Law but under "the law of Christ" (see Galatians 6:2).
If the Law is still binding on us today, then it has not yet accomplished its purpose—it
has not yet been fulfilled.
If the Law, as a legal system, is still binding on us today, then Jesus was wrong in claiming
to fulfill it and His sacrifice on the cross was insufficient to save.
Thank God, Jesus fulfilled the whole Law and now grants us His righteousness as a free
gift.
"Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus
Christ.
So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ
and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified"
(Galatians 2:16).

Jersey area has sent us a picture also let's turn the map on and get going okay
cold high pressure over the Upper Midwest Ohio Valley
is going to slowly move eastward off the east coast by Saturday and temperatures
are gonna slowly begin to moderate as the airmass slowly warms now the wind
chills will range between 50 to 20 degrees below zero over parts of the
Upper Midwest today still going to be very cold today we got a few more hours
to go through I'd say 24 to 48 hours the cold air in the upper-level energy will
aid in producing lake effect snow that's gonna be heavy at times downwind from
the Great Lakes through tomorrow meanwhile upper-level energy over the
northern plains will move south eastward to the Ohio Valley by tomorrow and off
the east coast by Saturday the energy with that's gonna hate him producing
light snow over parts of the Northern Plains that will move into the Ohio
Valley by tonight and into the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians by
tomorrow morning now this snows going to move in parts of
the northern Mid Atlantic overnight tomorrow ending by Saturday morning and
I'm going to put up a name map from the European model later on in the forecast
and show you exactly about what it's looking like your snow amounts should be
now in addition to all that a front is going to develop over parts of central
Canada overnight tomorrow night it's gonna move southeastward into the Upper
Great Lakes by Saturday morning the boundary will aid in producing light
snow over parts of the Upper Great Lakes four Mississippi Valley overnight Friday

get all the latest and weather news forecasts watches warnings and any kind
of storm systems that may be approaching you know what folks yesterday afternoon
I got a note from my friend Lorenza down in st. Lucia she was saying
that tropics are even cooler than normal how about that she says nothing compared
to what folks here in the US are going through nothing but it is much different
than what they're used to with this cold snap so I just wanted to throw that in
and lorentz yeah thank you Sun might shine for dropping me that note and
letting me know that what we're looking at courtesy of tropical tidbits this is
the GFS 2 meter air temperature this is Fahrenheit this is not wind chill like I
say we got today today to go through tonight tomorrow tomorrow night but my
Saturday most of us are going to CH so what I'm going to do right now we're
gonna click through it you can see the boundary lines here we go through today
now we're up to tomorrow and the other system I was talking about it's going to
happen but it slowed up yeah it's gonna warm up a real nice warm-up before it
arrives so this is going to give everybody a good chance of what's going
on look by Saturday you guys that have had - wind chills at least you're going
to be in regular digits maybe double digits but look in Ohio whoo-hoo 35
degrees in Northeastern Ohio yeah yeah down south were wine up big time look
over here at Oklahoma in the Panhandle 64 degrees almost 80 down in Florida in
the southern portions of Florida this is what Saturday is looking like we're
gonna click on through though because I want you to see that that cold snap but
look be so thankful people Pennsylvania you're gonna hit 35 and 39 Maine yeah 9
degrees and if you go to northern Maine you will hit a minus 6 but it's still
gonna be warmer than what it was ok much and for everybody in Minnesota would you
look at that you got 30 degrees and 22 even up north you got to get to the very
section of the borderline between Minnesota and Canada before it's 4
degrees so that's just looking great big old fat warm up I told you it was going
to come I didn't know if the other system would push faster or not
yesterday when we had the live show but it's looking like we're going to be able
to get this really good warm up before this coal system starts to move down
again now we're up to the 5th of February as you can see in that cold
that cold cold arctic air is beginning to push down again but that warmer
moisture from the Gulf's given to fight check it out were up to the
fifth this is next Tuesday this coming Tuesday still really warm down in the
southern next areas from Texas all the way up to Fiji
even in southern New Jersey you're hitting sixty-four temperatures but then
it starts to creep on down as we move through it now we're up to the sixth of
February and you can see it moving down now in the panhandle of Oklahoma and
it's going to get a little color I'm afraid this is the seventh and Boo it's
getting cold now once again this is not wind chill this is actual air temps of
what it's looking like it should be you can see it's getting colder again for
everybody up in Minnesota minus 27 minus 25 and we come to Wisconsin and upper
Illinois that's seven Indiana we got 22 and 28 that in Michigan 24 Upper
Michigan 17 that's still better than what you're going through right now okay
you're not even hitting that in the air temp much less the wind chill but I'm
not going through the wind chills right now I'll save that for an afternoon
forecast but I just want you to see how this next cold system is going to come
down and then it starts to warm up again so it's not going to last too long but
it's going to be enough you're going to feel of a bite then it starts to move
eastward and we can see now Kentucky 18 19 15 but still it's better than what we
have had folks then it should warm back up again I don't want to go too far out
but I did want to show you this so you would be aware of it and now we have the
name map over at the European model I'm going to turn it on let it roll through
this goes today through Saturday you can see the timestamp down at the bottom
with the times so far I've heard I've heard two reports
they can flicked a little the amount of people who have
died and this bitter bitter coal is at least eight now and I have heard one
reporter say nine so I'm not for sure if it's eight or nine but ones too many so
people you've still got this bitter cold ago remember I told you in the live show
yesterday today was going to be one of the coldest days yet and that indeed it
is so we still got 24 to 48 hours of miss cold cold mess to go through before
we start to get a little warm up now you see the snow going across well in st.
Paul Minnesota it's looking like from the snow that you see here that's going
to be happening in your areas a half an inch to an inch saturday is going to be
sunny hopefully you're going to be around 35 degrees Fahrenheit Saturday
nights going to be 32 there and abouts a little chance of some freezing drizzle
and by Sunday woohoo 45 degrees Fahrenheit for Chicago Illinois tonight
one to three inches of snow this is Chicago Illinois
Saturday you got that drizzle chance of drizzle and freezing drizzle also and by
Sunday you should hit around 46 degrees Farenheit Indianapolis Indiana one to
three inches of snow and by Saturday and Sunday you should hit 46 Pittsburgh
Pennsylvania one to two inches of snow Saturday your temps should be around 41
Fahrenheit Sunday you should hit a brown let's see it 52 Wow
that's gonna be great Columbus Ohio one to three inches of snow and by Saturday
43 degrees Farenheit sunday 53 degrees Farenheit Atlantic City New Jersey out
all of this mess you can get a half an inch to an inch of snow Saturday 39
Fahrenheit sunday 44 Fahrenheit and at Charleston West Virginia
you're gonna get a little snow I'm thinking maybe a half an inch or less
but it may be a half an inch to an inch by Saturday warming right on up
fifty-two degrees Fahrenheit and by Sunday 61 degrees Fahrenheit so I told
you just hang on just hang on we're going to get this warm up and it
will last a few days before the next cold surge of air comes down from the
Arctic so that's gonna wrap it up for the weather news with j7 409 this
morning thank you so much for being with me on the last day of January can you

Chelsea agree Michy Batshuayi loan but West Ham face transfer tug of war, Tottenham twist - Duration: 2:37.
The Hammers now face a battle with the La Liga outfit to tie down the Belgian until the end of the season
Batshuayi is set to end a nightmare spell with Valencia as he goes in search for regular football
Chelsea and Los Che are set to agree the termination of his loan which currently seems the best option for both parties
And now the Blues have agreed to loan the former Marseille man to both West Ham and Real Betis according to The Telegraph
It means the final decision on his next destination is likely to fall on Batshuayi's shoulders
Everton had also been interested in the forward but they do not have the money to secure a permanent deal
They are unable to take the 25-year-old on loan because they already have Kurt Zouma on a temporary deal from the Blues
Transfer regulations state you cannot loan another Premier League club two players at once
It has been suggested by talkSPORT that the Toffees could look to sign Zouma on a permanent deal so they can complete a loan move for Batshuayi
The stance also denies striker Cenk Tosun from leaving Goodison Park. Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol claims that Tottenham held initial talks with Chelsea about taking Batshuayi on loan
They are currently in need of some extra fire power after Harry Kane was sidelined until March with an ankle injury
But Solhekol reports that Spurs decided against a deal for the striker. Chelsea value Batshuayi at around £18million
They are willing to take a cut on the player, who they bought for £33m in 2016. Monaco and AC Milan had been interested earlier this window

I Am Depressed But My Parents Don't Believe Me - Duration: 5:10.
Hello my name is Amy and I'm depressed.
And until recently my parents
didn't even believe me
since I became a teenager i was always a bit ..
sad. But for the past few years
it went to something more
until recently I couldn't understand what it really was
most of the time I was feeling so
exhausted
and miserable. Even getting out the bed was hard
i felt like there was no point at anything
i didn't care about my grades or my friends
it was like nobody cared about me
and nothing interested me
i spent my evenings watching TV shows and crying
because the world seemed like such a bad place
at some points i realised that I was depressed
i didn't wanna believe it at first because nowdays
everyone says they are depressed
but i couldn't run away from the truth anymore.
so i tried to explain it to my parents
i thought that they would understand
or at least try to
my dad said "kids are so soft nowdays"
"nobody was depressed back in my days"
and my mum said "It's all in your head sweety"
"you just have to be more positive"
Honestly it made me feel even more miserable
because i couldn't even talk to my parents
i had friends but they clearly didn't want to listen to me anymore
i don't blame them because it was really annoying to listen to me
talk about my depression ... all the time.
i checked online communities about depression
and people recommended me going to a psychiatrist
i asked my parents many times, explaining
how important it was for me and eventually
they agreed althought they didn't want to.
i thought hope for the first time in a long while
so i went to the doctor with my parents
he was an older men and he was really weird
he didn't even look at me and was very
uninterested on what i had to say
i explained my situation but he just kept asking
about the same questions about school and stress and in the end
he just said that i was just tired from school
and i needed some rest. i was shocked
but my parents were basically happy about it
to their credit they did try to make me feel better
they let me skip some days of school and have a bit of fun
only i really didn't wanna have fun
i didn't wanna do anything
exept stay in my bed and cry
after i returned to school
everything got even worse. Teachers were angry at me
for not doing homework and not paying attention in class
but i didn't really answer
so they just stopped bothering me
the same with my classmates. They didn't pay attention to me
because i was always sitting alone
staring at the window or reading a book
or something. At this point
i started to think that my parents were right
and i just had to be grateful for what i had
so i tried to start talking to people and to study a bit better
but i just didn't have the strength to do that
one day
my dad got angry at me for being ungrateful and spoilt
he said " you don't wanna talk to us, you don't want to study
tell me what do you want?"
i stared at him because i didn't know
what to say, because i didn't want anythimg
he kept going and i couldn't take it anymore
so i started to cry...loudly.
i never cried like that. It was
only silent weeping in my room
but this time was like i had a mental breakdown
while i was crying i said a lot of stuff like
"i'm worthless, i don't even feel like a person"
"i don't know how to do anything and i never do it better"
it was only a part of the things i said. most of them were way worse
my parents were shocked because before
i was very quiet and calm
and it was the first time they heard about my real feelings
after a few days my mom came into my room and said
i talked with dad and we want to believe you
what can we do for you i think it was the first time in a while
when i felt something good happen to me
i asked them to try another psychiatrist this time
they agreed. the new phychiastrist was a young man
he was very attended to me and asked a lot of questions
but he actually listened to my answers
i told him everything

Arsenal transfer news: Gunners open to selling Mesut Ozil - but NOT on deadline day - Duration: 3:07.
Ozil has fallen out of favour under manager Unai Emery and Paris Saint-Germain are said to have made a last-ditch attempt to take him to France before the window shuts at 11pm tonight
The Sun say he will be surplus to requirements in the summer but they want to keep him until the end of the season as they look to finish in the top four and qualify for next season's Champions League
Ozil, 30, is the club's highest earner and will need to be offloaded if Emery wants too make any big-name additions to his squad for next season
The Gunners have already begun the re-shaping of their squad, with the signing of Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona now confirmed
Suarez, 25, will initially move to the Emirates until the end of the season but Arsenal can sign him at the campaign if he impresses
Ozil could follow Aaron Ramsey, 28, out of the exit door in the summer as the Welshman is out of contract in June and expected to move to Juventus on a free
Meanwhile, Arsenal's January business might not end with Suarez as they are still said to be tracking Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic
The Gunners want another loan deal with an option to buy but the deal is being held up as Inter Milan are demanding a permanent deal or a guarantee that they will sign him in the summer
While the two clubs are yet to agree on terms, Perisic is desperate to force it through and handed in a transfer request immediately after Arsenal made their interest known
The Croatian, 29, said it has always been his dream to play in the Premier League but time is running out to get the deal over the line
Arsenal have also been linked with former Atletico Madrid star Yannick Carrasco, 25
The Belgian winger is currently playing in China with Dalian Yifang and reportedly keen to move back to Europe
However, his agent appeared to rule anything out when he said the club are determined to keep hold of him
Emery is also understood to want another midfielder before the window closes. PSG's Christopher Nkunku, 21, or Everton star Idrissa Gueye, 29, could yet make the switch to north London if the boss gets his way

Microchipping humans wields great promise, but does it pose greater risk? - Duration: 9:27.
JUDY WOODRUFF: An intense debate is under way over the benefits and drawbacks of human
microchips.
They're already used to identify ranch animals and pets, but the practice of implanting chips
in people is also on the rise.
Those who embrace the idea say they see it as a way to take back control of their personal
data.
But others are worried about how that data could be used.
Special correspondent Malcolm Brabant reports from Southern England.
It's part of our breakthrough series on the Leading Edge of science, technology and medicine..
ALEX LEWIS, Motivational Speaker: I don't want to lead a normal life.
I want to lead an exceptional life.
And I want to try things and do things that perhaps others in my situation have never
done.
MALCOLM BRABANT: Meet Alex Lewis, interior designer, businessman, adventurer, and motivational
speaker.
ALEX LEWIS: We were just an ordinary family, me, Lucy, and our son Sam.
Then, just over two years ago, I caught a common cold.
It was to change the course of my life overnight.
I'm in this condition thanks to an incredibly rare case of Strep A. And it led to toxic
shock syndrome, septicemia, and subsequently sepsis.
I lost all four limbs within about six or seven months.
MALCOLM BRABANT: Alex is a pathfinder for those with serious medical conditions.
In the remains of each arm, a microchip has been implanted.
One is to hold medical information, the other for a chore the able-bodied take for granted.
ALEX LEWIS: For me, as a prosthetic user, one of the most fiddly things is keys.
Keys are a nightmare for us.
And the microchip, when looking in to it, we realized quite quickly that it could save
a lot of time.
So, for me, it was going to be beneficial for that.
I could lose 15 minutes trying to get in my front door.
I could lose 10 minutes trying to get out of my back door.
And now all that's been saved.
MALCOLM BRABANT: These microchips use a system known as near field communication.
It's exactly the same sort of technology used in contactless debit and credit cards.
Like the bank cards, the chip's information can be scanned.
But it cannot transmit.
Once banking security has been configured, developers believe consumers will soon be
free to spend with the implant.
A British railway ticket.
But it's much different in Sweden, a country supposedly leading the microchip revolution.
On Sweden's high-speed rail lines, for the past 18 months, implanted passengers have
put their travel payment on the chip.
CARLA GRELSSON, Sweden (through translator): I think its really good with a chip ticket.
I love all companies that use the chip technology.
MALCOLM BRABANT: But the rail company is stopping the experiment.
The number of implanted passengers is relatively small, and it wants to pursue other forms
of ticketing.
This is not a setback, insists Sweden's microchip pioneer Jowan Osterlund, a former body piercer,
seen here giving a TED Talk.
JOWAN OSTERLUND, Bio-Hacker: We can do easier travel.
We can do faster and safer payments.
We can do something as mundane as opening a door.
I mean, the opportunities are endless.
GUS HOSEIN, Executive Director, Privacy International: Unfortunately, these innovators often don't
think about the political ramifications.
MALCOLM BRABANT: Gus Hosein is the executive director of Privacy International, a nonprofit
that challenges overreaching state and corporate surveillance.
GUS HOSEIN: In today's world particularly, we have to imagine how governments and how
ambitious politicians and even how ambitious corporate executives will try to imagine putting
this type of technology into you so that they can exploit your data and ultimately exploit
you.
DR.
GEOFF WATSON, Consultant Anesthetist: I'm going to ask you to keep your hand nice and
relaxed like it is.
MALCOLM BRABANT: I.T. student Kieran Anderson is being chipped by Dr. Geoff Watson, a consultant
anesthetist who is driving research into the medical benefits.
DR.
GEOFF WATSON: The microchip is actually inside here.
And there's a sort of an introducer piece of plastic that will push it out once it's
in.
KIERAN ANDERSON, Student: OK.
DR.
GEOFF WATSON: So this is the implant coming now.
You will feel a bit of pressure and a bit of a clunk.
So, you are now a cyborg.
Welcome.
KIERAN ANDERSON: Not too painful.
It's fine.
DR.
GEOFF WATSON: Kieran has a near field communication microchip in his hand.
And that can be used to store data, store information, his name, address, contact details,
anything he chooses to put on there, blood type, allergies, drugs, basic medical information.
KIERAN ANDERSON: The idea of everything being able to communicate together excites me quite
a lot, so automatic payments and that sort of thing without you having to actually do
anything.
DR.
GEOFF WATSON: The idea of this chip is that it's not transmitting anything.
It has to be actively read.
You choose who can read it and when they can read it.
I think that that gives a lot more control over our personal information over our information
than your mobile phone is giving away.
MALCOLM BRABANT: But Privacy International's Gus Hosein is yet to be convinced.
GUS HOSEIN: Already governments are keen to capture your fingerprints.
They are keen to capture your iris scans, and they want to be able to do this at a distance,
so they can identify you as you walk through areas.
They're doing facial recognition.
These are all fallible technologies.
They're hard to do well.
But the idea that they could actually just embed you, it is the modern form of tattooing
bar codes on people.
And we have seen governments do that in the past.
This is just the next generation.
MALCOLM BRABANT: Steven Northam, the co-owner of the British implant company, believes those
fears are exaggerated.
STEVE NORTHAM, Owner, BioTeq: So I have been compared to Hitler before for microchipping
people.
It's been commented.
But, I mean, I can't really see the connection, personally.
I can understand people have very strong views.
There's big ethical arguments around microchipping people.
But, currently, it's by choice.
No one is enforcing you have to be microchipped.
If that happens, a completely different ball game and lots more arguments to be had around
it.
MALCOLM BRABANT: Eddie Curry favors using chips to replace keys at his weekly newspaper
on England's southern coast.
He feels the publication is at risk in the changing global media market, and wants to
attract new income by turning the company into a hub for digital innovators.
EDDIE CURRY, Owner, New Milton Advertiser: I'm well aware that this technology could
be used for all sorts of sinister things.
But, for us here, we're an ethical firm.
We don't envisage doing anything more than that, and we wouldn't force anyone to have
one, because we understand they may be reticent about it.
MALCOLM BRABANT: But the majority of staff have rejected the offer to be chipped.
ROZ WATERS, Reporter, New Milton Advertiser: The benefits, you know, of just being able
to open a door wouldn't really be sufficient for me to have something implanted in my body.
JAMES GUNNER, New Milton Advertiser: I haven't got any concerns, because, obviously, this
is quite a small company, and I don't think it will be abused here.
BEN CRAIG, New Milton Advertiser: I suppose somebody has got to be the trailblazer, so
that other people can see how it works.
I don't want that to be me.
MALCOLM BRABANT: Geoff Watson sees huge potential, especially in the medical field for those
with illnesses such as diabetes.
DR.
GEOFF WATSON: Take a diabetic who collapses in the street, and people don't know what
to do.
By the time the ambulance has arrived and works things out, it make take hours before
they are properly treated, whereas a simple instruction read from the phone, "My name
is Joe Bloggs, please contact this number for my next of kin, I'm diabetic, please give
me some sugar and it should make me feel better," those kind of things could make life-changing
advances for individuals.
MALCOLM BRABANT: The chips can be read by scanners installed in the latest mobile phones.
So how easy is it would it be for a hacker to steal the information from the implants
used by Alex and others?
DR.
GEOFF WATSON: Any technology is open to abuse, and anybody would be able to hack it.
In order to hack these devices, it has to be held still for a period of time.
At the moment, I think it takes about three to four hours to hack it.
MALCOLM BRABANT: Alex's wife, Lucy, is not troubled by security concerns and is looking
forward to the second generation of chips.
LUCY LEWIS, Wife of Alex Lewis: Alex travels overseas an awful lot.
And before he goes overseas, I have to do this whole packaging of medication, what medication
he's on, and passports.
I'm always worried about who has his passport.
And so all of those things, it will eventually come into its own that he will be able to
use all of that information, without me worrying about where it is or who it's with.
MALCOLM BRABANT: At present, Alex Lewis relies on a driver.
But he hopes the next breed of implants will put him behind the wheel.
ALEX LEWIS: To be able to get into the car, to start it without any kind of key, with
the microchip start the car, would be fantastic.
But it just opens up a bit more freedom for me.
MALCOLM BRABANT: Privacy International's Gus Hosein insists he is not a Luddite, a person
opposed to new technology.
GUS HOSEIN: Every technology that comes along has to be treated with complete suspicion,
until we're able to sort out the ethical barriers around our actions.
ALEX LEWIS: I live an incredible life, a life I'm incredibly happy to be living.
MALCOLM BRABANT: As this technology improves, the debate will intensify as to whether implants
generate or diminish freedom, as well as the many shades of gray in between.
For the "PBS NewsHour," I'm Malcolm Brabant in Southern England.
