The Search Engine Google is showing this Doodle in few Countries for Sabah's 90th Birthday

. Sabah was a Lebanese singer and actress.

Considered a "Diva of Music" in the Arab world, she released over 50 albums and acted in 98

movies as well as over 20 stage Lebanese plays, and sang over 3000 songs.

Sabah was among the first Arabic singers to perform at the Olympia in Paris, Carnegie

Hall in New York City, the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Sydney Opera House.

Sabah was nicknamed "Empress of the Lebanese Song".

She is considered one of the greatest Arab singers of all times .

Sabah's voice evoked sweet nostalgia, and her performances sparkled with joy and life.

In the war years, her humanitarian works brought hope to millions.

In addition to her Lebanese citizenship, Sabah held Egyptian, Jordanian and US citizenship

as well, and continued to perform and make television appearances into her 80s.

Sabah wished before dying that people would dance at her funeral, should not feel sad

because she went to a better place and should keep listening to her songs and always be

happy no matter what, in the same way that Sabah always gave happiness to people.

I used to be a senior software engineer at Google.

Until they fired me.

For doing something unforgivable.

Something so controversial that it was the number one news story for days.

My crime: I wrote an internal document, that among other things, suggested that men and

women, on average, are different.

Like I told you.

Unforgivable.

The politically progressive viewpoint, which is dominant at Google and in the media,

is that all disparities in society are due to injustices.

Or in this case, that the gender gap in tech is solely due to some form of sexism.

But is this true?

The politically correct answer is: yes.

And Google acts accordingly.

It treats men and women differently during hiring and promotion, holds official women-only

events, and gives mandatory sensitivity training on how to combat alleged sexist bias.

Of course, all of this makes sense if sexism is indeed the sole cause of the imbalance.

But what if men and women are not exactly the same?

Then, sexism is just one of many possible causes of the imbalance, and exclusionary

programs and differential treatment can be a counterproductive form of sexism.

These practices actually increase tensions and make some feel like Google cares more

about their gender than their programming ability.

As an engineer, when I'm faced with a problem, I want to solve it.

So I decided to research the premise: that men and women are exactly the same.

I wrote my findings in a 10-page document, titled, "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber".

What did I discover?

That not all of the male-female disparity in tech may be the result of sexism.

That at least some of it may be attributed to men and women having different goals

for their careers and their lives.

To cite just two examples:

In the study "Women, Careers, and Work-Life Preferences," published in the British Journal

of Guidance and Counseling, the study's authors conclude that women, across populations,

tend to look for more work-life balance, while men tend to have a higher drive for status.

And according to a study by Cal State Fullerton psychologist Richard Lippa, men, on average,

tend to be more interested in things, while women tend to be more interested in people.

These findings have been replicated many times.

They've actually been cited by other researchers as a cause for the gender gap in tech.

In other words, I didn't make this stuff up.

In fact, after my document came under attack, evolutionary psychologist Geoffrey Miller

said its "empirical claims are scientifically accurate."

But Google disagreed.

Like…really disagreed.

First, the company's newly appointed VP of Diversity, Integrity, and Governance, Danielle Brown,

posted a memo that said my report "advanced incorrect assumptions about gender."

Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, sent a memo to all employees saying that I "cross[ed]

the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes."

This was, he added, "not O.K."

Then, he fired me.

By that point, much to my shock, my document had gone viral.

News outlets were branding it an "anti-diversity manifesto."

But if they had read what I wrote, they could see for themselves that it was pro-diversity.

I had suggested multiple ways that we could get more women into tech without resorting

to counterproductive discrimination.

Ironic, isn't it?

The company that hires some of the smartest people in the world couldn't handle a well-reasoned,

scientific discussion.

But my firing pales in comparison to a larger issue.

Will Google force upon its users the same politically correct views that it forces upon

its employees?

The evidence is disturbing: Google already manipulates its products

to fit a certain viewpoint.

Just one example: YouTube, Google's video platform, restricts access to dozens of PragerU

videos, along with videos made by other influential moderates and conservatives.

Yes, Google is a business and can set its own policies.

But for its billions of users, Google is their main gateway to information, the lens through

which they view the world.

This makes Google, in some ways, more powerful than even the government.

And that means Google has a special responsibility to, well, simply follow its own motto:

"Don't be evil."

Google Cloud Tutorial - Hadoop | Spark Multinode Cluster | DataProc - Duration: 13:05.

Hello and welcome to Google Cloud tutorial at Learning Journal.

If you are learning Hadoop and Apache Spark, you will need some infrastructure.

 You can do a lot on your local machines or try things in a VM.

But sooner or later, you will realize following problems.

You have limited resources

and all you can do is to create a single node or a standalone environment.

But you want to learn more on a real multi-node cluster.

Installation and setup of Hadoop and Spark is a tedious and time-consuming process.

As an alternative, you can download a ready to use VM image,

but they don't offer you a multi-node cluster.

In this video, I will set up a six-node Hadoop and Spark cluster.

I will do it in less than two minutes.

And most important thing. You don't have to buy expensive machines,

download large files, or pay anything to get this cluster.

So, let's get started.

In the very first video of this tutorial,

we created a free account in Google Cloud and also created a VM in GCP.

You can use your Free GCP account to set up a six-node Hadoop cluster.

Let's do that.

Google offers a managed Spark and Hadoop service.

They call it Google Cloud Data Proc.

It is almost same as Amazon's EMR.

You can use Data Proc service to create a Hadoop and Spark cluster in less than two minutes.

Let me show you step by step process.

I am assuming that you have already setup your Google cloud account

and a default project as explained in the first video.

Now, start your Google Cloud Console.

Go to products and services menu.

Scroll down to Data Proc and select clusters.

Hit the create cluster button.

Give a name to your Cluster.

Choose your region.

The default selection is global.

We don't want our cluster to spread across the globe.

I want to limit all my nodes in a single region and a single zone.

That keeps the cost low.

Choose a machine type for your master node.

With your free GCP account, you cannot have more than eight concurrent CPU cores.

The paid account doesn't have such limits.

But eight CPU cores are good enough for us.

I will give two CPU cores to the master node.

The next option is to select a cluster type.

We have three choices.

A single node cluster.

A standard multi-node cluster. This guy comes with no High Availability.

A High Availability multi-node cluster.

This option will create three master nodes and enable High Availability.

We will go with a standard multi-node cluster.

Let's reduce the disk size to 32 GB. That's enough for me.

Now, let's choose the data node configuration.

I will pick up a single CPU for each worker.

Let's take five workers.

Reduce the disk size to 32 GB for each worker.

Great. This configuration gives me a six-node Hadoop cluster. One master and five workers.

You can hit the create button, and the Data Proc will launch a six-node cluster in less than two minutes.

The new Cluster comes with Hadoop and Spark.

But I want to configure a Jupyter notebook as well.

 So let me expand this part.

We keep all the defaults.

Do you see this option? The image version.

The latest image version as on date is 1.2. What does that mean?

The Data Proc 1.2 comes with Spark 2.2 and Hadoop 2.8.

That's the most recent version of Spark and Hadoop.

The Google Data Proc team is quick enough to make the latest versions available for your exploration.

If you need an older version of Spark, you can choose an older Data Proc version.

Ok, the initialization actions.

The initialization action allows us to install additional components on this cluster.

You need to supply a script for that. You can create your own script,

but the good thing is that the Data Proc team has already prepared many of them.

Here is the list. You can get Apache Drill, Flink, Jupyter, Kafka, presto, Zeppelin and much more.

We will use jupyter.sh.

Good. Let's hit the create button.

 Wait for a minute or two, and the Data Proc API will provision your cluster.

Amazing. Isn't it. No downloads, No installation, nothing. Your cluster is ready in just one click.

We used Cloud Console UI to create this cluster,

 but you can use Cloud SDK to create a script

and launch it by just executing a script file from your local machine.

You can also achieve the same results using Rest based APIs.

The SDK and the APIs are the primary tools for automating things in Google Cloud.

I will cover them some other day. Now the next part of it.

How to access and use this cluster.

I would want to do at least two things.

SSH to one of the nodes in this cluster and access Web-based UIs.

For example Resource manager UI and my Jupyter notebooks.

The first part is simple. Click on the cluster, and you should be able to see the list of VMs.

This one is the hostname of my master, and these are the worker nodes.

You can ssh to the master node. In fact, if you check your dashboard, you will see your VMs.

You can ssh to any of these VMs.

You may not want to do that, but the GCP doesn't stop you from accessing your VMs.

Let's ssh to the master node.

These VMs are Debian so your CentOS or Redhat specific commands may not work.

 But that shouldn't be a problem. Right.

You can access HDFS.

You can also start Spark shell.

You can submit a spark job too.

I will be using this cluster in many of my Spark tutorial videos.

Now the next part. How to access Web Based UIs.

All such UIs are available on different ports.

 For example, RM is available on 8088 and Jupyter is available on 8123.

I have an option to create a firewall rule and open these ports.

But I don't want to do that. Because these services are not secure

and I don't want to open several ports for attackers. Right.

There is another easy alternative. SSH tunnel.

It's a two-step process. We can create an SSH tunnel to the master node.

And then configure your browser to use SOCKS proxy.

The proxy will route the data from your browser through the SSH tunnel.

Let's do it.

The first thing is to install Google Cloud SDK.

The link to download the SDK is available in the documentation.

Start the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

The Installer automatically starts a terminal window and runs an init command.

It will ask you for your GCP account credentials and the default project name.

Once you have the SDK, you should be able to use gcloud and gsutil command line tools.

Ok, we wanted to create an SSH tunnel.

Start a terminal and use this command.

The command gcloud compute ssh will open a tunnel from port 10000 on your local machine

to the GCP zone us-east1-c and the GCP node spark-6-m.

 You can change the zone name and the master node name based on your cluster setup.

The -D flag is to allow dynamic port forwarding and -N to instruct gcloud to not to open a remote shell.

Great. The tunnel is open. Minimize these windows.

The next step is to start a new browser session that uses the SOCKS proxy through this tunnel.

 Start a new terminal. Start your browser using this command.

I am starting chrome.exe with this URL.

This URL is for my YARN Resource Manager. Next one is the proxy server.

It should use the socks5 protocol on my local machine's port 10000.

That's the port where we started the SSH tunnel.

The next flag is to avoid any DNS resolves by chrome.

Finally, the last option is a non-existent directory path.

This option allows chrome to start a brand new session.

Great. You can access the resource manager. It shows that one application is already running on this cluster.

You can access your jupyter notebook by changing the port number to 8123.

 You can create a new Notebook. It doesn't offer Scala Notebooks

because we haven't configured Apache toree or some other equivalent kernel.

But I think that's fine. You can start PySpark at least.

You have the cluster. You can access it over the web and SSH.

Execute your Jobs, play with it and later go back to your Dataproc clusters list and delete it.

We don't have an option to keep it there in shutdown state.

Creating and removing a cluster is as simple as few clicks.

You can create a new one every day, use it and then throw it away.

You might be wondering about your data. Man, If I delete a cluster, what happens to my data.

Well, If you stored it in HDFS, you lose it.

Keeping data outside the HDFS allows you to create a cluster as and when you need it.

and delete it when you are done with the compute workload.

That's a fundamental architectural difference in elastic clusters and persistent clusters.

Even if you are using Amazon's EMR, you don't keep data in HDFS.

You would be keeping it in S3 or somewhere else.

In case of Google Data Proc, you have many options.

If you have a data file, you will keep it in GCS Bucket.

The Google Cloud Storage Bucket. Let's leave GCS Bucket for another video.

However, I will be using GCS Buckets as well as HDFS in my Spark Tutorials.

What is Google's Mobile First Index? - Duration: 4:41.

So, as you probably know, the internet usage on mobile devices is now exceeding

the internet usage by desktop devices with just about every measure in terms

of minutes, in terms of pageviews, in terms of pretty much everything. As you

probably also know Google continues to use its leverage to try and drive

webmasters and website designers towards making more mobile-friendly websites. A

couple of years ago or two and a half years ago in April of 2015, Google

announced something called the mobile-friendly update and this was

basically giving a little bit of a rankings boost to any sites that were

mobile-friendly -- and mobile-friendly they defined as things like that it fits on a

mobile device screen; that the fonts are big enough to read; that you don't have

to scroll horizontally; that the links were big enough to touch with a finger --

those kinds of things. well about a year ago they announced their next phase of

trying to drive people towards mobile optimization and this was called the

mobile first index and what this means is that your site will now be ranked

based on the content that's on the mobile version of the site not on the

desktop version of the site when Google's indexing your site it's going

to come in as if it was a mobile device and look at the content in that way and

rank you based on that they started the rollout this year on an incremental

basis starting with those sites that are highly mobile optimized all ready to do

some testing with that but they've indicated that they're going to

accelerate that rollout in 2018 so more and more of their index and their

rankings will be generated off of the mobile version of websites so what does

this mean for your website if your website is already responsive meaning

that it automatically adjusts to the size of the screen and the content is

largely the same on the responsive version

on the mobile version as it is on the desktop you will probably be fine it's

more for the people that I will call the head in the sands approach where they're

saying I don't want to deal with mobile until I absolutely have to and they

don't have any form of mobile site it's really time to deal with that and we

really recommend going in the responsive route for those sites where they have a

mobile site but it's a separate site you know like sometimes it's MDOT and your

URL or something like that you need to look at is the content on that mobile

site largely the same as the content on the desktop site is it is rich and well

optimized from an SEO standpoint as your desktop site one of the problems that

often those sites have with indexing for mobile is that usually when links are

made by other websites into your site they'll link to your desktop pages and

so if your site starts getting ranked on its mobile site it's separate mobile

site you may lose some of the authority provided by that linking profile so we

really recommend if you have a separate site you also consider moving it to a

responsive site this has a couple of implications from a optimization

standpoint one is that your SEO work your search engine optimization really

needs to focus on what we'll call mobile first SEO meaning that you are really

focused on optimizing your mobile site for visibility in the search engines

instead of your desktop as was traditionally done the other thing is

that from a user experience and usability standpoint you really need to

look at how you're going to get the depth of content from your desktop site

in your mobile site in a way that's highly usable you're going to need that

richness and depth of content on your mobile site to be able to make it rank

as well and so you need to use approaches like expandable content where

you show and hide different parts of the content as the user clicks on things

like tabs or accordions things that expand the content based on the user's

interest in it the good news is that it's been a slow rollout today with

Google focusing mostly on sites that are highly

optimized already and they've said that they're gonna publish blogs about this

giving webmasters some instruction and that well there'll be some warning about

when it will roll out but we believe it's going to largely happen in the year

2018 so it's time to start thinking about this the thing I would say is is

in summary don't panic about this just start to

start to get prepared and make sure that your site your mobile site is well

optimized ideally responsive and you start thinking about things like mobile

first SEO and mobile usability

So, is it important to have your business listed on Google? Of course it is! Google is the gateway for people to find things.

Google Maps, Google search all of those things are tied to your Google business listing.

And yeah, somebody like me or lots of other people out there could charge you money to set it up for you,

or you can do it yourself in just a few minutes, and I'm gonna show you how right now.

It's completely free to set up. By the end of this video

you'll not only know how to get your listing set up, but also

I'm gonna show you how to verify it with Google.

That way you'll have that verified checkmark which is important for the credibility of your business or brand, as well as

helping you in search results. And a lot of people have asked me,

"Do you have to have a physical storefront or a physical address,

where you do your business and customers come to?" to have a Google business listing? And the answer is no as I will show you

in just a second.Now before I show you how, in case you're not quite convinced

you need a Google business listing, here are three reasons you definitely need one.

Reason number one: You may already have

Listing and not know it. Some customer might have typed it in once and Google just made it a listing in which case you need

to claim it,

because there might be the wrong information on there, in which case you could be damaging your business and losing potential leads.

I've seen Google Business listings with the wrong phone number,

so nobody can reach you to call you and hire you. Reason number 2: You get to control

what's on it once you own your Google Business listing. Not only the hours and things like that

but you can change it last second. For example, you might change and put holiday hours on there.

You can also control the photos that are on there. Customers can add photos to Google Business listings,

and if you've never gotten ahold of your listing, they may have uploaded

terrible pictures of your business

and they're

representing you when people find you on Google search. And reason number 3: you can monitor and

respond to reviews to make sure that your reputation is good. So whether you're trying to get on Google Maps

or Google Search, any part of Google,

let's get into how to set up your Google Business listing. Start off by going to google.com/business.

If you're not already signed into a Google account you'll have to do that now,

and if you don't have one just create one.

It's totally free. You'll see a map come up

and you'll want to fill out the information on the box over on the left. At the bottom

you'll see it says, "I deliver goods and services to my customers at their location."

You can click this link for more information, but basically if you run your business,

maybe you run a garage door repair company out of your house and all the work you do is at other people's locations and

businesses and houses, then you would go ahead and click yes.

Or if you have a meal delivery service, anything like that where you don't have a storefront you're gonna

go ahead and click yes. Now

they need a little bit more information here, so "My business delivers goods and services to customers within this area."

This is basically going to help Google show your results to the right people If you only serve the city of Pittsburgh,

then Google doesn't want to show your results to people in Los Angeles.

Obviously put in your location and the range that you want to serve.

And if you're like me you run a business out of your house you do not want to check this box here.

But if you do have a storefront or anywhere that

customers come to and you want your address to be public you can go ahead and click that it'll ask you to verify your information.

Check the box hit continue.

This is where you're going to get your business listing verified. Now if you have a business that is already legitimately online,

maybe you have an actual retail store, or a restaurant

or something like that then you can actually get verified much quicker by using your publicly listed phone number.

Since what I'm running is out of my house, and there's not much record of it yet,

I have to do it by mail so the way it works is you say, "Okay yes,

I want to do it by mail." Google's gonna send you actual mail, a postcard, snail mail,

which is kind of crazy! Just thinking about who Google is! They say it'll take one to two weeks,

but they usually show up within five business days in my experience. Once you get your card log in to your My Business account, enter

the code and you will be all set with a verified business on Google. Then you're in total control, now

I have a business listing on Google for Five Minute Social Media. You'll see here

it says my profile is 55% complete so I can do a few things.

This is probably the easiest place to continue right here, "add profile photo." Select a photo from your computer

or just drag it in there, crop it the way you want it.

Then you can choose a cover photo.

This is just like on Facebook or anywhere else. You might want a picture of something that represents your business You might want a picture of

your actual business. I'm gonna use this awesome stock photo of somebody with a great French manicure and

clearly health-conscious with their pear apple or whatever is in the background here.

You'll see a few tabs here across the top where you can add different photos, things about your team if you've got a staff,

your

identity, this is where you can

put another logo in,

in addition to your profile picture if you look over here on the left side of the screen you'll see now, Home, Info, Photos,

Website, Users. Photos is where we are right now. We just uploaded a few photos. Website -

They'll actually let you build a free website

if you don't have one. Users is where you can add other people that have access to your page.

And then Info is the other place you're going to want to click. Make sure that all of the information here is

accurate. Add your hours, additional links, anything else that you want to include. Once you're verified you'll be able to see Google Insights here where

it'll show you exactly how people are finding your page,

what kind of customers are finding your page, a lot of great free info from Google, as well as manage your reviews, so people can

leave you reviews. You can reply to them if they're good, bad,

whatever you want to do. If you're concerned about what the public can see and what they can't you can look here under info and

you'll see under my address it says, "Only visible to you."

I want to show you what happens if your business already

exists on Google, even if you've never registered it. There may be a listing because some consumer or customer

may have gone ahead and added it to Google. They may have done it with the wrong information!

This is why it's important to claim your listing.

I'm gonna put in Starbucks.

So you'll get this message: "The following business looks similar to the business that you already added. Is this your business?"

Obviously I do not own the Starbucks in Pike Place Market in Seattle, but if your business does come up

this way, then you would go ahead and click on it.

Then you have the opportunity to claim and verify the business in the same way that you would if there was no business listing. One

more thing though, even you do verify, it may take a few weeks for all of that to show up in search results.

In the Google Search Engine, the search snippet has a little wordage down underneath and that

is what's called the Meta Description.

Now when you are building your website, specifically individual pages, you put in a meta description

for that page.

But that meta description has a character limit of 160 characters before Google

truncates that description so if you want the most pertinent information to be seen on the

search engine result pages, make sure that's before 160 characters.

So that was your "SEO Did You Know?!"

FAQ Fridays - What If The Google Map Is Not Good Or If It Is Outdated? - Duration: 0:55.

We will be able to check our alternative image providers to see if their images are any better,

but if they are not then alternatives would be to have a drone map created.

We could load your current paper maps into the system, load any dwg files you may have

created for the cemetery and if you have any shapefiles or GIS data that has been previously

created we could upload this on top of the aerial image as well.

Or if none of these work for you then you can just use our ListView instead of having

the mapping ability on the system.
