How to make Vocaloid Music #11 Adding a delay to your Vocaloid Track - Duration: 6:16.

Hello everyone I am Gigi Miu!

Last lesson we discussed about reverb,

in this lesson instead we discuss about delay, another useful effect to apply to your voice track.

Let's listen to a normal la la la la with a four on the beat drum track beneath it.

there is no effect at the moment.

LEt's add a delay now

Even if at first glance may sound somehow similar to the reverb, they are quite different.

The delay adds a delayed copy of your sound on top of your original one.

As for the reverb it has its own settings on which you can play around.

The difference between delay and reverb is the following

The reverb is a simulation on how a sound wave reflects on surfaces, while the delay is just a delay of the original sound.

Wikipedia can surely gives a better explanation than mine.

You should go check on wikipedia both the delay and the reverb, so you can have a technical explanation.

But the base concept is the same is a delayed reproduction of the original sound.

Again, a reverb is a simulation of the refraction of a sound wave, while the delay it is just a delay of it.

To be sure let's check the reverb page as well.

Yes, a more technical description but the concept is the one I just expressed.

I know what you are about to ask. Why should i need to delay my original sound?

The answer is that there is no correct answer, as always. All this tools are tools and you need to understand, or sometimes feel when you may need them.

Try it in one of your song and see by yourself if you like it or not.

There is one hint I can give you. Try to think on how a sound wave behave in reality.

Do you know how a sound wave behaves?

While again wikipedia is surely a better place to discuss in detail how a sound wave behaves I can tell you some basic stuff.

For instance if I would like to simulate Miku being in a room, I would probably need a reverb to emulate the effect of her voice bumping on the walls of the room.

If she was standing there, in that room, and singing, her voice would surely bounce on the wall and get back again till it depletes

and the same can be applied to the delay.

If Miku was n my left, when she wuld start singing here sound wave would reach my left ear first and then mu right one a fraction of second later.

Do not forget that a sound wave has it's own speed for traveling through the air and you should consider this if your aim is to replicate a realistic behavior of that sound wave.

As you can see on Wikipedia the sound travels on a speed of 331 m/s

So, back on our example, if Miku is on my left, her voice will reach my left ear first and my right one later.

Do you need to replicate reality in your song? I don't know that's up to you! I am just showing you some tools it is up to you on how to use them.

It's important to know what copyright does not protect.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Copyright does not protect titles, short phrases, the name of a company,

the name of a performing group.

It really does not protect a groove or a vibe or a feel.

It does not protect the style of a music.

And again, if you study the copyright law carefully,

and you read it carefully, which very few people do, for good reason,

it's about 140,000 words, and if you're looking to learn about music,

like what the copyright law protects with respect to music,

you'll find very little in there.

The word melody occurs once.

But there's no mention of rhythm, note, tune, tempo, chord, progression,

none of that.

There are also these myths people have heard that, oh, there's the five note

rule or the seven note rule.

You can't copy four chords or six chords,

or three seconds or nine seconds.

There are no such things like that in the copyright law.

The copyright law is wonderful for what it does,

and it really has to be fairly vague to be able to accommodate changes.

And you also can't predict what could constitute copyright infringement.

But let me get back to titles and names.

What is legal is if you are looking for a name for your band,

is to name your band after the name of someone's song.

That happens more often than you might think.

There's a famous artist you know named Lady Gaga.

She heard a song by Queen called "Radio Gaga", and said, from now on I'm

Lady Gaga.

And that's perfectly legal.

The Rolling Stones got their name from a song

by Muddy Waters, called "Rolling Stone".

Great, great song he did in 1950.

Just electric guitar and him singing.

It also became the name of a magazine.

The magazine, Rolling Stone named itself,

named the magazine after the Muddy Waters song.

The group Radiohead, Radiohead got their name from a Talking Heads song,

called "Radiohead".

In the film, True Stories, you'll see that being performed.

And it inspired them to come up with that name.

It's a common and legal thing to do, to name

yourself or your band after a movie.

Examples of where that took place, the group Fine Young

Cannibals named themselves after a film called All the Fine Cannibals.

Wu-Tang Clan named themselves after a film, Shaolin and Wu.

Tang.

And again, legal and to be expected.

I hope that gives you an idea of what is not protected by copyright.
