Light Yagami and L are my two favourite characters of Death Note, and for good reason.
They both represent two sides of my favourite conflict in all of fiction (I dunno if I'm
just saying that because I'm currently in the Death Note mood), they are both such complex
characters, and there is a ton to analyze and theorize about them.
Now today, I'll take a look at this anime's famous protagonist, Light Yagami, with a lot
of spoilers thrown in.
*INTRO*
So a lot of people like to label this guy as a psychopath, and it fits quite well.
He has no problem killing people, whether they're innocent or not, and, despite being
very popular and having lots of friends, he doesn't socialize with them a lot.
This was shown in the first few episodes of the show, and is something very important
concerning his character.
Now, people rather don't label him as a psychopath, but a lot of fans say he's a
sociopath, so he developed these antisocial qualities over time thanks to the murders
of the Death Note, rather than being born with these traits.
Now, we clearly see him not socializing with friends even before he had the Death Note,
and, yet, he's still a sociopath?
Well, as you can see in the Yotsuba arc, the arc where Light and Misa lost their memories
and passed it onto the Yotsuba company to clear their names, Light is shown to be very
innocent, and has a lot of empathy or compassion towards practically everyone.
He even said that he wouldn't dare manipulate someone's feelings, and, as Kira, Light
does this practically all the time like it's a normal thing to do.
He did this with Naomi Misora, with Misa, with Rem, with the Task Force, and with several
other people.
Also, despite having the same ideals as Kira, he still would never actually murder someone.
It seems non-Kira Light is actually a deontologist in his actions, which means that morality
is defined in terms of duty or obligation, very different from Light's Kira persona.
But then, why did he act so differently as seen in the first episode, before he picked
up the notebook?
Why so bored?
Why so antisocial?
Why so, well to be blunt, pissed?
Well, it's just as I had said, he was bored.
To elaborate, look at one of my favourite scenes from one of my favourite episodes,
episode 1, when Ryuk and Light first meet.
After killing a ton of criminals using the Death Note in a short amount of time, Ryuk
then arrives.
Light is ready to give up his soul, but Ryuk assures him that that is not his intention;
Ryuk wants to get rid of his boredom.
Light is surprised, and emphasizes with Ryuk, stating that what he's doing is out of boredom
as well.
Then, he declares that he'll be justice.
This implies that he still has justice as a motivator, but it is mainly out of boredom.
Furthermore, in episode 2, while Light is creating the system to hide his Death Note,
Light explains that he's studying to become a detective, like his dad.
This means that he intended to get rid of crime by being a detective.
This means that his main motive is to be one (that is, until he gets the Death Note, where
he finds a quicker and far more efficient way to get rid of crime), as he is studying
to be one, meaning that this is pretty much his main goal.
Just what am I getting at?
What I'm saying is that in the Yotsuba arc, when Light is not bored, he is working as
he always wanted to, so he is more kind and empathetic.
It was his boredom that made him act antisocial.
But then when he gets the opportunity, when his dream finally comes true, he acts kinder
and more like his father.
It is because of this boredom that he picked up the notebook, he finally saw an opportunity
to not be bored, and so he used his sense of justice, his hatred towards criminals,
as an excuse to kill and get rid of the boredom.
Over time, his boredom would develop into pure sociopathy, killing innocents to get
what he wants, manipulating people's feelings, laughing like a maniac, with his sense of
justice slowly going away, becoming his lust for power and to kill.
You can still see that he has his sense of justice in the second half, when his insanity
is nearing its peak, as he gets pissed when Mikami kills innocents, and it is definitely
not to ruin his reputation as he is already known to kill innocents at times.
But, it is at the very, very final episode when his insanity is at its full peak, when
his true face is unmasked.
He finally cracks, with him not being motivated by justice anymore.
He insults Soichiro for having a strong sense of justice himself, and he uses the good things
he achieved as an excuse for Near to not condemn Light when he is caught, desperately attempting
to do anything regardless of how amoral it is just to save his ass.
Now Light is a very loved character, and I can understand why.
I mean, he's relatable, yet unique, while being a complex character.
