McKinsey Careers vs working at Bain or BCG - Duration: 2:57.
Have you ever wondered, what it's actually like to work at McKinsey.
Well, we've got a dish for you today.
Some really great insights from people that on our professional team at Management Consulted,
and also readers who worked at McKinsey.
I'm going to share just a couple of the things that make McKinsey different from Bain and
BCG.
I'm Jenny Rae La Roux, the Managing Director of Management Consulted and I'm a former Bain
consultant, so this isn't coming directly from my first hand information.
This is coming from again, our large community of readers and staff that worked at McKinsey.
But here are a couple things that you can expect if you get a job at McKinsey.
First of all, you will be traveling all...the...freaking...time.
People at McKinsey are staffed on global projects and they're staffed not necessarily with folks
that are in their own office.
You could be staffed with people from three different offices, so you've got to travel
to the client every week.
McKinsey is very travel heavy, and it also means that you'll be traveling a lot outside of your region.
So expect to get [airline] status really quickly.
McKinsey is also an expertise based firm.
So rather than starting and trying to create a new thing over and over again, they take
a large amount of knowledge that they keep in a central knowledge database, and they
pull it out for specific projects, and work on modifying the approach, and also utilizing
the expertise from their other projects.
It's a very different approach than a Bain or BCG which is generally a little bit more
tailored, a little bit more hands on with the client.
And then finally, with McKinsey they have a very structured approach.
You've probably noticed if you've done any McKinsey cases that McKinsey cases are very
organized.
They are pre-written, they are pre-organized, they go through specific pieces at specific times.
And you can expect McKinsey projects to be run in very much the same way.
Folks that are effective at moving up the ranks in McKinsey, are very good at managing
that structure.
So the commentary around it is that the structure provides freedom, because you know what to
expect, when to expect it, and a high volume of work can come out of it on the other side.
So these are the main things you can expect if you go to McKinsey vs Bain or BCG:
Lots and lots of travel to be with your globally staffed teams, also lots of knowledge center
information that you can draw on for projects, and finally, tremendous amounts of structure
inside the projects that provide both stability and also a calling card for the way you actually
do your specific projects.
Hope you had fun watching this video, we'd love for you to subscribe, comment if you've
worked at McKinsey, or if you have other questions about what's it like to work for McKinsey,
we'd love to answer those questions for you as well.

How To Mend A ❤Broken❤ Relationship Or Marriage - Duration: 6:28.
Warning.
If the topic of psychological manipulation and emotional enslavement of women offends
you, I want you to stop watching this video.
And if you want to continue, you must agree never to use this knowledge to hurt women.
Deal?
Great.
Let's start!
OK, so maybe you can relate to this…
Your relationship probably started off like most others…
You were madly in love and made love constantly…
Then for some reason it all went wrong.
And now the whole things going down like a leaky ship.
It feels like the core of your relationship has rotted away.
And no matter how hard you try you can't keep things afloat....
You want her back but don't know what to do.
How do you stop the breakup or better yet - get back together with her?
Well, here's some good news.
In this video, you'll learn exactly what to do to reverse the breakup and restore your
relationship quickly and easily.
I'll teach you this ONE technique which you can use to make her love you again.
Sounds good?
Great.
Well, before we start, however, there's something I want you to do for me.
Could you help me out by clicking LIKE?
That will really mean a lot to me.
Go on and click LIKE now because I'll wait here.
Clicked LIKE?
Great.
Let's continue!
Forget the B.S. you hear in couples therapy.
You don't need to "communicate better" or "share your feelings."
That type of stuff is redundant in your situation.
Fuck that shit.
Here's the ONLY thing to understand about why relationships fail:
LACK of RESPECT.
No matter what she needs to respect you.
And unless this happens, it just won't work.
So why doesn't she respect you?
It could be because you're a giant suck up, or a boring nice guy...
Whatever the reason is she thinks you're a chump.
And this ties into what I call the "Relationship Paradox":
The more you try to please her, the less she cares.
That's the strange thing about women... ...trying to make them happy actually has
the opposite effect.
Funny isn't it?
It's like pulling at a knot.
You only make it tighter with each pull.
Makes sense, right?
Here's the thing... pleasing a woman never works and here's why -
If she senses you're trying to manipulate her... she's only going to pull further
away.
But this ties in with the point I'm trying to make…
Trying harder only makes you into more of a subservient and predictable beta male.
What you really need to be using is CONTROL and DOMINATION.
But how do you do this?
How do you make her fall head over heels in love with you?
Well, like I said, conscious manipulation very rarely works.
You can TRY but it's like herding cats.
And if you have any experience with women at all you should know that.
Instead, what you have to do is this...
You have to learn how to exploit her psychological flaws.
You see, EVERY WOMAN is vulnerable to psychological manipulation.
There are no exceptions at all.
The human mind is plastic and can change quite easily.
And if you know how to "change" a woman's mind then making her fall back in love is
as simple as A-B-C.
And the easiest way to do it is by putting her on an emotional rollercoaster.
You see, here's the thing...
Relationships are a lot like fire.
If you don't continuously feed them with fuel, they go out.
So what is the fuel in relationships?
Quite simply - it's EMOTIONS.
You need to fuel your relationship with emotions or else the fire of love goes out.
You have to make her FEEL something you have to make her WANT you.
This is what makes women fall in love with men.
It's the essence of flirting.
And it's what women need, want and desire...
Sadly, very few guys ever realize this.
And terrified, submissive beta males are far too afraid to try it.
(That's why those types of men always get dumped or cheated on.)
Do you want to get back with her?
Yes?
Then it's important for you to learn how it's done.
Now, remember earlier when I said I'd teach you something useful...
You're about to learn a technique for stoking the fires of emotion.
This method will put your woman on a wild rollercoaster of emotion...
...and move her back and forth between positive and negative emotions...
...and in the process, awakening the love she once felt for you.
In no time at all she will be begging you to take her back... wondering why the two
of you ever broke up in the first place.
Sounds good?
I call this technique Fractionation and it's almost like a type of "Mind Control."
Well, "Mind Control" may sound rather hokey but believe me - it's as legitimate as it
gets.
And guess what?
Women love Fractionation.
And here's how it works: With Fractionation, you'll get her to experience
an emotional rollercoaster with you.
Remember: she wants to experience emotional ups-and-downs with you.
It's a "woman" thing.
So all that you're doing is giving her what she really wants.
And in the process, you'll also get what you want.
It's a win-win situation!
Here's the problem, though...
Fractionation can't be described in a short video like this.
It won't do the technique justice... …and that's why I am recommending something
better for you.
It's Derek Rake's Online Masterclass on Mind Control.
And it teaches Fractionation as its core technique.
There's where I first learned about the technique, by the way.
So here's what's going to happen next…

Are These Alabama Town Names Real or Fake? | This is Alabama - Duration: 4:21.
I'm up to the challenge.
I'm from Alabama.
That being said I'm probably going to screw this up.
I'm gonna nail this thing.
I'm not gonna miss a single one of these.I am cautiously optimistic.
I'm really competitive.
I want to win this thing.
Let's do this thing.
Scratch Ankle.
You would assume that it is real because everyone in the south has to deal with "scratch ankle"
at some point because of mosquitoes.
No.
That's not real.
Did somebody found a town based on the practice of scratching your ankles?
You be they did.
That's a real one.
Nailed it!
That's a real town name.
Scratch Ankle, Alabama.
Dogtown; I wish I lived in Dogtown.
I love dogs.
Dogtown.
That's real.
Well, I'm moving.
Tallulah!
We have a famous actress named Tallulah Bankhead.
I would say it's real.
Tallulah, that's a real name.
What?
Tallulah's not real??
That's a disservice.
Scratch Ankle, take not please.
You could be Tallulah.
Ratttlesnake City, a place that I would never want to live.
I hope it's real.
Please be real!!
Oh no!
It is fake.
Thank God!
Blue Eye.
Fake.
It's real.
I want that to be real.
So I'm gonna say real.
Yay!
Yes!
Man I'm bad at this.
Frog eye.
Frog eye is fake!
I'm going to walk out.
Lickskillet.
Fake.
Fake.
I believe Lickskillet is a real place.
Dang it!
Yeah.
You can have a good time down in Lickskillet.
When someone's like, where were you last night?
And they're like, "Lickskillet."
I'm like, you don't have to tell me anymore.
Butter Biscuit, Alabama.
Delicious.
I'm gonna go with real.
That's not real.
It needs to be real.
I would be the mayor of Butter Biscuit.
Burnout.
Is that like when you, like drive really fast and your tires like leave the marks.
That seems like Alabama, right?
We do that.
I'm going with real.
It's fake.
That is really not fake.
Ok, that's funny and sad.
Cotton Gin.
My gut says fake.
But Cotton Gin, probably real.
Man.
Should've gone with the gut.
Normal, Alabama.
I'm gonna say that's real.
In Alabama?
No, fake.
Real.
Of course.
Mine was a joke!
It's very normal here.
Welcome to Normal.
Everything is fine.
That's the motto.
Eclectic.
That is not in Alabama.
Lies.
Lies you tell.
Sunflower, Alabama.
That's fake.
Sunflower Alabama.
I'm gonna go real on that one.
Yes!
Ok!
Alrighty!
You say it's real, but it's fake.
Smelley, Alabama.
It's real.
So I'm gonna say it's real because that's not how you spell smelly.
I'm real excited about that cookie winner's get!
Possum Trot.
That sounds so much like something on Beverly Hillbillies.
Real!
That's gotta be real.
I'm going to say that is real.
Yes!
Yes!
I know an Alabama town when I see one.
It's Possum Trot.
Chigger Hill.
Next to Rattlesnake City.
That's a place I would never want to live.
That's fake.
I'm gonna say it's fake.
It's real??
Oh no!
No!!!
Scarce Grease?
Am I reading this right?
Fake, but if it's real...
I'm gonna say it's real.
Real.
Yeah!
I find it hard to believe that there's anywhere in Alabama where grease is scarce.
That's it?
I think I'm the champion.
Who names these places?
Alabama; what a place!
So what did we learn here today?
We learned that the weirder the town name the more likely that it's a real place in
Alabama.
And the food there, it probably has a really good gas station that serves delicious chicken.

Pain - Should you run or rest? - Duration: 6:35.
Welcome onto the next edition of Run with Coach Parry, I'm Brad Brown and we've
got the coach with us once again, Lindsey Parry, Lindsey, howzit?
Very good thanks Brad, how are you?
Very, very good thanks.
It's that time of the year where people are starting to ramp up mileage, particularly
ahead of the Comrades Marathon and these sort of questions keep popping up more and more
often on our forums where somebody has picked up a slight niggle or they've got a bit of
a pain somewhere and I think this is probably a good time to answer this question Lindsey.
Is it a good idea to push through a slight niggle or if you're feeling some pain when
you're training?
The very simple answer to that question is no and I'm going to quality if because obviously
there are firstly exceptions to that and secondly, most runners are going to flat out ignore
that advice.
We're going to talk through how you make the decision about whether that's a good
idea or not a good idea.
Any pain or niggle that you've picked up is really a sign from your body that you've
overdone it and you do need some sort of modification, quite often a day or two of rest and everything
is taken care of.
What've come to accept over the years is that it's very difficult for people to stop,
especially when they're training for a goal that's providing real fear and/or motivation
to get the job done is that people will continue to train with injuries.
How do we make this decision about what is being stupid and potentially causing you lots
of harm and headache and heartache from missing weeks of training and what is the sort of
thing that we can continue to train with?
I really break it down into very simple things to understand.
Number one, when I'm running and I'm running with pain, is there any progression in pain?
That goes for during the run, if I start running and the longer I run the more painful it gets,
that means you have to get some help.
Rest as an absolute minimum, some sort term rest, but you absolutely have to get some
help, otherwise it's going to get worse and worse, become chronic.
It gives you loads of problems and you're going to miss out on weeks of training.
The second thing is progression around after session, so in between sessions.
So, I run today, my Achilles is sore, I run today and while I'm running it actually
doesn't feel too bad, possibly even feels a little bit better but as soon as I stop
running, maybe between 30-50 minutes after the run, the Achilles is noticeably more painful
or in the morning when I wake up, that's the next day, it's noticeably more painful.
If any of those two scenarios occur, then you've got to get treatment and you've
got to stop exercising, otherwise it's going to end up in a place where you potentially
miss out altogether on the race that you're training for.
If there's no change, in other words, running is not allowing it to get better and it's
not getting any worse, then I would still encourage treatment because then I think you
could carry on training and get treatment and it would get better and it would start
to get better, but I would seek treatment.
Obviously there's the third kind which is just where we overdo it ever so slightly.
It's pretty irritated maybe for one or two runs but each time I run and certainly after
runs it's definitely getting better and better.
Those types of little overreaching niggles, for sure, we can train through those.
Obviously if it keeps occurring in the same place, same thing applies, go to someone,
get a professional, try and figure out why it keeps recurring, loosen up, release whatever
needs to be released and get a couple of home based exercises that you can do to strengthen
and/or correct wherever the little issue is there and we carry on training.
That's in a nutshell how you would decide how clever it is to carry on training with
an injury or a niggle.
Lindsey, I know often it's driven by finances where people go, I don't really want to
go see a physio or a bio, but often if you just err on the side of caution and go and
see a professional, sooner rather than later, the quicker you get it sorted, the quicker
your chances are of having it fixed and also the better your chances are that it doesn't
turn into something major.
Yes and as you say, spending a little bit of money in the short term might save you
a lot of money in the long term.
If treatment is needed and you love running and you want to make it to race day, sometimes
you've just got to accept that a couple of hundred rand is going to make a big difference
to your quality of life, quality of running and ability to get the job done on race day.
Absolutely.
As always, Lindsey, great to catch up, thank you so much for your time and don't forget,

News24 - Barcelona fans blast Man Utd target Philippe Coutinho... harsh or have they had enough? - Duration: 4:37.
The Brazilian is having a hard time with the La Liga giants as speculation over his future continues to linger
Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly keen on the midfielder, who is determined to stay and fight for his place in Catalonia
Ernesto Valverde has given the former Liverpool man a run of games in his starting line up hoping that he can play his way out of rough form
But after Coutinho's first-half display in the La Liga match with Girona, Barcelona fans were not impressed
One tweeted: "Valverde has given Coutinho enough chances. He has to start benching him ASAP
I don't care if Dembele is injured, he should change formation if need be and play with 2 strikers
"Coutinho had a lot of chances to prove his doubters wrong but his attitude is awful
BENCH HIM." Another added: "Something might be wrong with Coutinho." A third wrote: "Having Coutinho on the wing is just so wasteful man, you have a player that can make great runs down the middle and high IQ to make that final pass to Messi or Suarez shits so frustrating to watch
" And a fourth wrote: "If United or Chelsea offer €120m for Coutinho, I would sell him without thinking and nothing happened here
" A fifth said: "it has reached a point where I'm sorry to see Coutinho play, at this rate this summer we will accept the €110million offered by United
" Coutinho has managed just four goals and two assists in 19 La Liga appearances this season
Last season he finished with double his current goals (eight) and assist (five) tally having played one match fewer
Since joining the Blaugrana last January for £142million, he has failed to live up to his pricetag
Coutinho missed a one-on-one in the match after being put through on goal by Lionel Messi and was clearly short of confidence
Fans were not holding back in their criticism at a time when he clearly needs an arm around him
Another fan tweeted: "Bad game man. Coutinho underperforming again ffs. Tired of seeing him doing that game after game
Need a few more goals to establish our dominance tbh." A second said: "Coutinho shouldn't play vs Sevilla if he continues to perform like this even if Dembele is injured
We need to be extremely clinical midweek." Another claimed: "Coutinho never wins any press
he acts like he's pressing but he just run around in circles. it's becoming and pain to watch him
He's doing everything wrong." Valverde has revealed he is not happy with Pep Guardiola's approach for Frenkie De Jong, after it was revealed the Man City boss gave him a personal phone call to try and persuade him to come to the Etihad Stadium
"You can't call a player who already has a contract," Valverde said. "It isn't my code of conduct to call a player who is under contract with another club
If I do it, I won't say it. If the player says it then it is his problem. "I have nothing to say about it
Everybody has a different way of doing things. This club acts in a certain way. And I have nothing to say about it
"

Then I noticed the fact there was no time.
I was a believer in life to be myself always
and was asking whether I would be alive.
Give me a reason why not to adopt in this way
or judge me to be guilty of so many incurable sins.
Tell me why , or why not. Complaining way too much
maybe I overlooked something fatal for me.
The whole world was at a complete standstill
and I was in fetters, at the mercy of the mob.
The silent warning became louder everyday.
Then I kept pretending not to hear.
Its meaning had been in the eyes of beholder all along.
It had grown dark before I found a sign.
"Among the nonsense tragedies, what on earth you are looking for?
You only have to be honest to yourself and your own fate."
Tell me why, or why not. Complaining way too much

What is the 'master clock' or Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN)? - Duration: 4:36.
[Rhonda]: Your work, you've done a lot of research on what regulates these different
clocks.
[Satchin]: Yeah.
[Rhonda]: There's a master regulator clock, and there's other clocks in different organs.
Maybe you can explain.
I read somewhere that something between 10% to 15% of the entire protein-coding human
genome is actually regulated by these circadian clocks, and anywhere between around, like,
40% to 50% of those genes are actually involved in metabolism.
[Satchin]: Yeah.
[Rhonda]: So, there's, there's a wide variety of processes that are regulated by these clocks.
[Satchin]: Yeah.
[Rhonda]: Maybe can you explain a little bit about the central master clock and...
[Satchin]: Yeah.
[Rhonda]: ...what regulates that?
[Satchin]: [laughs] Yeah.
So this is a field of study that is actually not driven by a disease but pure curiosity.
So for a long time, people thought that there might be a master clock in the brain because
we always connect circadian clock to sleep-wake cycle.
And fortunately, there was actually a master clock.
And in fact, almost 40, 45 years ago, people who are working on different parts of the
brain…because at that time, 40 years ago, people thought that different parts of the
brain regulate different behavior.
So they are defined like cubic millimeter area of brain that regulates something.
So we're systemically taking out parts of the brain in mouse, rodents, and different
larger rodents, and then figure out that when they hit this small part of the brain called
suprachiasmatic nucleus, so that means we know that our eyes send optic nerves that
crisscross and there is a part of the brain called optic chiasma, so it's above the optic
chiasma.
So that's why suprachiasmatic nucleus.
So that's...
[Rhonda]: Say that 10 times fast.
[laughs] [Satchin]: Yes [laughs].
Suprachiasmatic nucleus or SCN, it's composed of around, say, 100,000 neurons, I guess,
in humans, really small, maybe one millimeter by one millimeter.
That's the size of this brain part.
If you remove that brain part in a hamster, then this hamster doesn't, will not have any
sense of time and go to sleep at random time and will wake up after two or three hours
and it continues.
But what is most exciting is if we take SCN from another hamster and transplant, it's
like a brain transplant experiment, then this hamster will get all the rhythms back.
That's the earliest example of neural transplant transferring behavior from one animal to another
animal.
And that essentially established that there is part of the brain that accesses master
circadian oscillator or circadian clock because it orchestrates this daily rhythm in waking
up and going to sleep.
And just imagine, only when we are awake, we eat, or we exercise.
So that's why all other organs related to eating, for example, our gut, our liver, our
fat, all of them are driven by this feeding behavior.
Similarly, our muscle is driven by when we run.
So that's how the SCN acts as the master circadian oscillator.
So if we damage the SCN then we lose all circadian rhythm.
So what happens in some of the neurodegenerative disease, like very advanced stage of Alzheimer's
disease dementia, if the SCN, this part of the brain is affected, then people lose their
sense of time in terms of when they go to bed or when they stay awake.
So this presents slowly, they turn into a state where they don't have a sense of day
or night.
They stay awake throughout the night and may be sleepy throughout the day.
So that's why this master clock is so much important for our health.
[Rhonda]: And that might also have a feed-forward loop because then, you know, if your master
clock is thrown off and you're awake when you're supposed to be sleeping and sleeping
when you're supposed to be awake, that's also been shown to affect hippocampus and long-term
potentiation.
So, you know, you've got this, sort of feed-forward loop.

Anthony Joshua EXCLUSIVE: Bob Arum demands US fight vs Fury or Wilder - Blog News - Duration: 4:08.
Anthony Joshua has had 22 fights as a professional so far, but all of them have been held in the UK
The heavyweight star has been long been rumoured to fight the likes of fellow warriors Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury
But disagreements in fight purses and venues have held back the chances of the fights happening
Wilder and Fury, however, fought back in December in an excellent match-up that ended in a controversial split decision draw
And Top Rank promoter Arum, who spoke exclusively to Express Sport, believes that if AJ is to fight either Fury or Wilder, it should happen in the US
"Those fights doesn't belong in the UK, they belong in the United States," he said
"I watched Joshua fight [Joseph] Parker in Cardiff and I saw the Wilder Fury fight, which was very good
"These big heavyweight fights belong in the United States, if you don't do these fights over in the states, you forego all of the US PPV money
" Joshua is scheduled to fight at Wembley Stadium in London on April 13, but has still not been sorted with an opponent
Promoter Eddie Hearn has said that he's hoping something can be wrapped up by the end of the month, but that Wilder is "petrified"
It's looking likely that Joshua will fight long-time rival Dillian Whyte in a much-anticipated rematch, while the possibility of facing Jarrell Miller in New York also lurks
WBO welterweight world champion and pound-for-pound king Terence Crawford also had his say on the heavyweight conundrum, but expressed his desire to see all of those fights happen
"Those are all tough fights for each and every one of them, I'm looking forward to seeing Wilder getting in there with AJ," he told Express Sport
Crawford, who is promoted by Arum and will fight the UK's Amir Khan in April, also spoke about why the fights were so hard to make ompared with earlier eras
"I feel like there were more fights back then, they were fighting each other more frequently, whereas today it's not as frequent," he added
"Back then all the top guys were fighting each other and a loss didn't kill your career, nowadays if you lose one fight, it will hurt your career so bad
"If you don't bounce back and beat another top undefeated guy, then your career is basically over

Memorable comeback or great collapse? A closer look at Serena's loss Down Under - Duration: 10:15.

The crowd inside Rod Laver Arena was beginning to thin, as Williams came back from a set and a break down against No
7 Karolina Pliskova to take a seemingly insurmountable 5-1 lead in the third set
One point and the match was over. Except it wasn't. Serving for the match, Williams was called for a foot fault
On her second serve, she ended a seven-shot rally by rolling her ankle and hitting a forehand into the net, pushing the game to deuce
She double-faulted on her next serve and then lost the game on a backhand unforced error
After suffering tough losses in the finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, it seemed improbable Williams would squander another opportunity to capture a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title
Surely, she would settle.Editor's PicksIt's not easy, but Naomi Osaka is trying her best to find her inner peace Just keep cool and calm

Once Pliskova realized she had Williams on her heels, she pounced. "I was pushing her
I was more aggressive," Pliskova said after her 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win. "This is not happening often, maybe once in life
I went for it. I got a chance and I pushed her in the end." Unbelievably, Williams lost her last 11 points on serve, while Pliskova, a former world No
1, saved three more match points and won the next five games and the match to earn a spot in the Australian Open semifinals for the first time in her career
Depending on the angle from which it's viewed, this match will be remembered as either one of the greatest comebacks in Aussie Open history or one of the biggest collapses of Williams' career
In reality, it was both. "I think it's the best comeback so far in my life," Pliskova said, making a case for the former
"The biggest win against [Serena] is that I believed I could win. That was the victory for me today
"Serena Williams lost the final six games of her quarterfinal match at the Australian Open
WILLIAM WEST/AFP/Getty Images But let's back up for a moment. To the foot fault. On match point
As the words left the line judge's mouth, the crowd gasped, readying for Williams' reaction
In that moment, was Williams thinking about the infamous US Open incident of 2009, when she was called for a foot fault on her second serve, giving Kim Clijsters double match point? Or her loss against Pliskova in the 2016 US Open semis, when Williams double-faulted on match point? Or maybe she was drawing on a more recent memory, recalling last year's US Open final against Naomi Osaka, when Williams was called for a coaching violation, the first penalty in a string of violations that cost her a point, a game and, arguably, the championship
Not one to let the public in to her innermost thoughts, it's unlikely Williams will ever discuss what was going through her mind after Wednesday's foot-fault call
It's hard to imagine she wasn't thinking about the improbability of it all. But then again, maybe she remembered she was serving at 5-1 and in possession of the most lethal serve in the game and simply dropped her guard
Whatever was happening internally, Williams, 37, did not react or question the call
She simply motioned for another ball and continued the match. Outwardly, she kept her cool
But inwardly, she began to unravel.play0:15Fans play rock-paper-scissors over Osaka's towelNaomi Osaka tosses her towel into the stands and two fans determine who keeps the souvenir with a friendly game of rock-paper-scissors
That's when it all fell apart. "I did everything I could on those match points," Williams said
"I can't say that I choked. [Pliskova] literally played her best tennis ever on those shots
I've never seen anything like it. Next time I'm up 5-1 against anybody, I need to make sure I play lights out
It's a good learning experience." But it's not a lesson Williams has studied often
Only twice previously had she squandered a Grand Slam match after being up match point
In fact, the only time Williams had ever lost after being up four match points, as she did Wednesday, came in a 2001 quarterfinal loss to Monica Seles at the Estyle
com tournament in Los Angeles. At this stage of a Slam and against a player like Williams, the chances of a comeback like the one Pliskova orchestrated are so small that the 23-time Grand Slam winner still seemed stunned by the outcome more than an hour after the match ended
"There's nothing I did wrong on those match points," Williams said. "I don't think it had anything to do with my ankle
I stayed aggressive. She literally hit the lines on some of them. At that point, I'm just trying to think, 'OK, win some points, win this game
' Then I had a couple more match points on her serve. Naturally I thought, all right, here we go, you're going to win one of these
That clearly didn't happen."play1:17Serena suffers foot fault, rolls ankleLate in the third set up 5-1, Serena Williams suffers a foot fault and rolls her ankle on the next rally
Since returning to tennis from a 15-month maternity leave last March, Williams has made it clear she goes to work every day with one goal in mind: to add to her Slam total and break the all-time record
"She's ready to win all four this year," her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, told ESPN
com following her fourth-round win here in Melbourne. But after coming achingly close in three of her four attempts in the past 10 months and after experiencing a gut-wrenching loss against Pliskova, one must wonder whether Williams still believes that goal is within her reach
"The big picture for me is always winning. I'm not going to sit here and lie about that," Williams said
"It hasn't happened yet, but I feel like it's going to happen." When asked where she feels she has the best shot at winning No
24, Williams said, "Roland Garros. Because it's the next Slam." Williams lacked that confidence at the start of her quarterfinal match
Instead, Pliskova began the day playing fearlessly and with an aggressive game plan against the seven-time Australian Open champ
But after being broken in the second set, Pliskova dropped her intensity and began to make errors
Williams, on the other hand, started to dictate the pace of the match midway through the second set, playing more aggressively (she was 8-for-10 at the net in the second set) and stealing Pliskova's confidence with each winner (Williams hit 21 winners in the second set to Pliskova's nine)
Williams took the second set 6-4 and continued to roll, winning seven of eight games before being broken at 5-1
Serving at 5-2 in the third, Pliskova saw an opening. "I just felt a chance," Pliskova said of that moment
"For sure it was in her head. I saw a chance and I just took it." Against Osaka in Thursday's semifinal, Pliskova knows she must do precisely the same
"I've played few hitters here in the last matches, so I think I'm well-prepared for Naomi," she said
"Obviously, she's trying to make her game from the forehand side. I will just try to do anything possible to maybe put one extra ball back, but on the other hand still be aggressive
Take my chances. I'm sure I'm going to get some. I think anything is possible." As she learned against Williams on Wednesday, belief is a powerful weapon
