Military Dog Is SO Happy To Finally Be Home With His Dad | The Dodo Reunited - Duration: 6:04.

All right, Bakk. Let's get you home.

- Oh, good. He ready.

That's a good boy. Good boy. Good.

All right, let's get you home, bubba. All right.

Today, Bakk and I are gonna be reunited.

It-- the moment's here. I'm so ready.

Hi, baby.

We're driving across San Francisco now,

and we're making our way.

In January, Bakk started limping.

And they took him to the vet and found out

that he had a torn cruciate ligament,

which is basically a dog's ACL.

- Can you see the rainbow, Bakk?

- Bakk, at that time, was seven years old.

He's not a good candidate for surgery.

But he is a good candidate for adoption.

So I was like, "I can take him home."

- You're resting here in Reno.

And you actually had to

drive through a snowstorm to get here.

Dogs have always been a part of my life.

When I went to join the Air Force,

that's the first thing I asked.

What do I have to do to be a military working dog handler?

In 2017 I got orders

to Osan Air Base in South Korea.

And when I arrived on station there,

they brought me to Bakk.

Here was this little German shepherd, that was just

waiting patiently. He knew that something was coming.

It was an instant connection.

We just -- we clicked. We were a team that --

that absolutely were meant to be together.

Having Bakk, when I was away from my family, was huge.

I'm already away from my son, who was one,

kind of missing out on some of the big milestones

that people normally get to see at that age.

My son, Kristopher, wanted to do some sports.

I wasn't there, like I normally wanted to be.

For me, Korea, I knew was going to be

a year-long assignment. Knowing that,

you don't want to get super-attached,

because you know you're having to give this dog away,

but at the same time, it's very hard not to get attached.

I was ecstatic to return to my family.

I still felt bad that I had to leave Bakk over there,

But I just-- I knew in my mind that,

don't worry, he's coming home.

Not yet, but he is coming home.

You remember a guy named Technical Sergeant Cain?

Did he ever talk to you about a place called Boise, Idaho?

- We'll be driving up from Mountain Home Air Force Base,

into downtown Boise.

And the reunification with Bakk will be happening down there,

which is gonna be an awesome setting.

Today I have my wife, Stephanie, and my son Henry.

It was amazing to see so much media attention,

just capturing a moment of

having a dog and a soldier reunited together.

- Let's go see your Daddy!

This is a moment that I've been waiting for--

well, honestly, for about 11 months.

I brought Bakk's Kong.

I also brought a rope toy, which he absolutely loves.

Let's see who's here.

Who's here?

Who's here?

Bakk came through the door, and then it clicked.

It's the 2K! 2K, what's up, 2K?

He was like, "Oh, wait. I remember you!"

- You could see his eyes light up.

He walked right over to my wife, Stephanie,

and my 3-year-old son, Henry,

and got a little bit of scratch and love from everybody.

Just right at home.

I just want to give you a hug.

Because, thank you so much for bringing him home.

On the car ride back,

he took up the same position he did

when we were in the patrol car.

He decided he'd just kind of lay down, and

look around for a little bit.

Just getting those moments back,

and him wanting to be around me,

is awesome.

Originally, I was slightly apprehensive

on how Bakk would do around small children,

But as soon as he saw Henry,

walked right up to him,

with his Kong.

He was like, 'All right, this is kind of cool."

Same thing with Stephanie. Stephanie put her arms around him,

and he just immediately accepted,

"Well, this is somebody else who's gonna love me."

I don't see any problems with

my oldest son, Kristopher.

I think they're gonna get along just fine.

He spent seven years of his life

working and jobbing it out there,

for hours on end, in

all of the elements.

He's really deserved to just be a couch dog.

And kind of do what he wants to do.

And that's exactly what I want for him.

I just want him to live out his life

being happy, and not having to be stressed out

or having to do anything.

Just enjoy your time.

I get it. Come. Yeah.

Bakk! [whistling]

((KOREAN)) I'm from Seoul

((KOREAN)) Oh, you're from Seoul?

((KOREAN)) Have you lived in Korea before?

((KOREAN)) No...I've been to Korea two times, so....

((KOREAN)) Your Korean is good?

((KOREAN)) Yea?

((KOREAN)) You're being too nice

((KOREAN)) Thank you

***THIS IS GOOD EATIN'!!***

((KOREAN)) Is it delicious?

((KOREAN)) Yes, yes

((KOREAN)) It's very delicious

((KOREAN)) Use your chopsticks

((KOREAN)) would you like a fork?

((KOREAN)) Yes

((KOREAN)) Thank you

((MANDARIN)) Hello

((MANDARIN)) You remember me?

((MANDARIN)) I know

((MANDARIN)) I know

((MANDARIN)) The girl from Hong Kong, right?

((MANDARIN)) She's not working today

((MANDARIN)) She's not working this year?

((MANDARIN)) She went back to Hong Kong?

((MANDARIN)) No, she's just not working today

((MANDARIN)) Oh, today..I thought you said this year

((MANDARIN)) Today

((MANDARIN)) That's very pretty

((MANDARIN)) Thank you

**I'M TRYING TO GET THIS LAWNMOWER STARTED UP**

((SPANISH)) Where are you from, Mexico?

((SPANISH)) My parents

((SPANISH)) Your parents?

((SPANISH)) Yes

((SPANISH)) You were born here

((SPANISH)) Yes

((SPANISH)) Thank you. That's all

((MANDARIN)) Looks delicious

((MANDARIN)) Are you also from Hong Kong?

((MANDARIN)) You know Fuzhou?

((MANDARIN)) Yes, I know Fujian

((MANDARIN)) I know

((MANDARIN)) Have you ever been to China before?

((MANDARIN)) No

((MANDARIN)) But I know most of the people that work at Chinese restaurants are from Fuzhou

((MANDARIN)) The majority of them are from Fujian

((MANDARIN)) Yes, I am from fujian, but that skinny girl that works here..

((MANDARIN)) Hong Kong?

((MANDARIN)) She's from Guangzhou

((MANDARIN)) Guangzhou is here..Hong Kong is here

((MANDARIN)) She's not from Hong kong, but from Guangzhou

((MANDARIN)) I forgot

((MANDARIN)) Why is you guys' Chinese so good? Do you have a teacher teaching you or do you teach yourself?

((MANDARIN)) I'm self-taught, but I teach him

((MANDARIN)) He can speak a little bit

((MANDARIN)) He knows a little bit, but yours is a bit better?

((MANDARIN)) Because I've studied longer

((MANDARIN)) For how long?

((MANDARIN)) More than 10 years

((MANDARIN)) For how long? more than 10 years?

((MANDARIN)) Yes, that's right

((MANDARIN)) Wow, that's a long time

((MANDARIN)) So, basically, you understand me when we speak like this?

((MANDARIN)) Yes, I understand everything

((MANDARIN)) I'm a bit suspect..

((MANDARIN)) You are a bit suspect?

((MANDARIN)) How come?

((MANDARIN)) Do you know?

((MANDARIN)) Wow, you know that old Chinese language as well?

((MANDARIN)) I don't know that one

((MANDARIN)) You're awesome

((MANDARIN)) Did you learn through your cell phone or..

((MANDARIN)) I came to China..no...it's been more than a year since I came here, but my English is not good

((MANDARIN)) Do you learn through the phone or do you go somewhere to learn?

((MANDARIN)) On the internet in chatrooms, Chinese restaurants and markets are places I practice at

((MANDARIN)) I want to learn English

((MANDARIN)) I want to know if you learned Chinese through your phone..ipad..

((MANDARIN)) Now I am learning English and am looking for a way to learn on the ipad or maybe go somewhere to learn

((MANDARIN)) Perhaps, someone that can speak better English and Chinese

((MANDARIN)) I would like to find

((MANDARIN)) You're already at the perfect place to learn

((MANDARIN)) But I only know a little English

((MANDARIN)) There's a lot of videos on Youtube

((MANDARIN)) But their pronunciation isn't accurate

((MANDARIN)) American or English people?

((MANDARIN)) American

((MANDARIN)) Why isn't their pronunciation accurate?

**THERE WAS A MIX UP HERE**

((MANDARIN)) Google translate isn't good

((MANDARIN)) If you want to create your own sentences Google isn't good

((MANDARIN)) Your Chinese is very good. You could go to China

((MANDARIN)) I certainly will

((MANDARIN)) My method is speaking with Chinese people face to face

((MANDARIN)) Huh, that's your job?

((MANDARIN)) No, no

((MANDARIN)) Whenever I want to practice Chinese, I practice with many of them in this manner.

((MANDARIN)) Just practicing with them face to face?

((MANDARIN)) Right

((MANDARIN)) Also, I have a few books

((MANDARIN)) Then you must spend a lot of time studying Chinese everyday

((MANDARIN)) See, for me I don't have the time for study. By the time I work it's pretty late, so I don't have time to study Chinese....I mean English

((MANDARIN)) The first time I started learning, I studied......

((MANDARIN)) more than 5 hours

((MANDARIN)) But lately I don't spend that much time studying Chinese

((MANDARIN)) Because you are already able to speak it

((MANDARIN)) Yea, up to now I can

((MANDARIN)) But..5 hours.....you don't have to work?

((MANDARIN)) I'm a teacher

((MANDARIN)) private teacher

((MANDARIN)) I teach Chinese and Japanese

((MANDARIN)) If you are a beginner..you have to spend a lot of time studying, 5 hours or 6 hours

((MANDARIN)) I have to work so I don't have much time. Perhaps, I have about 1 hours of free time to study English

((MANDARIN)) One hour is enough

((MANDARIN)) You're not a beginner

((MANDARIN)) I know

((MANDARIN)) Being a beginner is not knowing the alphabet, ABC, etc

((MANDARIN)) You don't know?

((MANDARIN)) I know how

((MANDARIN)) I know a little bit

((MANDARIN)) Take your time

((SPANISH)) Have you tried to learn Chinese?

((SPANISH)) Just some words. Not a whole lot

((SPANISH)) Which ones?

***I DIDN'T QUITE GET WHAT THIS WAS***

((MANDARIN)) It's like...''hurry up''

((SPANISH)) You speak Chinese?

((SPANISH)) Yes, I speak fluently

((SPANISH)) Chinese is my second language

((SPANISH)) Oh yea?

((SPANISH)) How many languages do you know?

((SPANISH)) So many

((SPANISH)) Thanks a lot

((MANDARIN)) Could you bring some chopsticks?

((MANDARIN)) Do you want 1 pair or 2 pairs?

((MANDARIN)) I'll put it right here

((MANDARIN)) Thank you

((MANDARIN)) Do you know how to speak any other languages besides Mandarin?

((MANDARIN)) English, Chinese..what else?

((MANDARIN)) Do you mean me?

((MANDARIN)) Of course, you

((MANDARIN)) Besides English

((MANDARIN)) Local language?

((MANDARIN)) Our local language there is Fuzhounese

((FUZHOUNESE)) Hello, hello

((FUZHOUNESE)) I learn Fuzhounese now

((MANDARIN)) 'Jia ong' means now, right?

((MANDARIN)) A bit different

((MANDARIN)) The accent is a bit different

((MANDARIN)) But I know what you just said

((FUZHOUNESE)) I'm Fuzhounese

((FUZHOUNESE)) How is the weather?

((MANDARIN)) Do I remember..

((MANDARIN)) You can speak a bit of the language of every place, huh?

((MANDARIN)) Yes

((MANDARIN)) You have a language talent

((MANDARIN)) Perhaps

((FUZHOUNESE)) What's your name?

((FUZHOUNESE)) What's your name?

((MANDARIN)) My name is Ninnong

((MANDARIN)) You are so awesome

((FUZHOUNESE)) I like to learn other languages, so I would like to learn Fuzhounese

((MANDARIN)) Also..

((FUZHOUNESE)) I would like to go to Fujian

((FUZHOUNESE)) I really like it

((MANDARIN)) I want to cry

((MANDARIN)) Who would've know that you know about our local language like that

((MANDARIN)) So awesome

((MANDARIN)) I admire you

((MANDARIN)) It's touching that you know the local language

((MANDARIN)) Are you very touched?

((MANDARIN)) You can speak Chinese. Most people know how to speak Chinese, but you know how to speak the local language?

((MANDARIN)) I also know Cantonese

((MANDARIN)) You speak a little Cantonese?

((MANDARIN)) I can speak a lot

((MANDARIN)) For example?

((CANTONESE)) I know how to speak a lot of Cantonese because I learned for two years

((CANTONESE)) So..I can have a conversation with Chinese people

((MANDARIN)) But...many people are from Guangdong

((MANDARIN)) But when they speak Cantonese I don't understand because their accent is not the same

((MANDARIN)) See, the majority of the Chinese speak Mandarin though

((MANDARIN)) Yes, I know

((MANDARIN)) But the local dialect isn't the same as Cantonese

((MANDARIN)) When I speak the local language they don't understand

((MANDARIN)) Of course

((MANDARIN)) But it's awesome that you are speaking the local language. That's awesome

((MANDARIN)) A foreigner speaking Fuzhounese

((MANDARIN)) You have no idea how my heart is feeling right now. That's very exciting!

((MANDARIN)) You are surprised

((MANDARIN)) Excellent

((MANDARIN)) Hi

((MANDARIN)) I have a question

((MANDARIN)) OK. What is it?

((MANDARIN)) If I say

((FUZHOUNESE)) He is my brother

((MANDARIN)) Do you understand?

((FUZHOUNESE)) My brother

((FUZHOUNESE)) He is my brother

((FUZHOUNESE)) My brother

((MANDARIN)) He's your father?

((MANDARIN)) He is your father

((MANDARIN)) No

((MANDARIN)) 'Die' is father

((MANDARIN)) What is ''didi''

((FUZHOUNESE)) Brother

((MANDARIN)) But see..there is one that you say strong and another one that you say more light, because we normally say..

((MANDARIN)) Is it an accent problem?

((MANDARIN)) We say

((FUZHOUNESE)) He is your father

((MANDARIN)) He is your father

((FUZHOUNESE)) He is your brother

((MANDARIN)) He is your brother

((FUZHOUNESE)) Very good

((FUZHOUNESE)) Is the weather very good?

((FUZHOUNESE)) Is the weather very good?

((MANDARIN)) I can understand a bit, but maybe the way you are saying it is not accurate

((MANDARIN)) So, this sentence is not accurate

((MANDARIN)) Because I'm still a beginner

((MANDARIN)) I just started learning

((MANDARIN)) You really are awesome. Your Chinese is already awesome.

((MANDARIN)) But by you being able to speak a little bit of the local language is also very impressive. It's not easy learning a local language

((MANDARIN)) Yea, I agree

((MANDARIN)) It's difficult learning the local language

((MANDARIN)) Are there many Chinese people around here?

((MANDARIN)) I mean, around the place you live or work. Are there many Chinese people?

((MANDARIN)) Chinese people?

((MANDARIN)) Yes, Chinese people

((MANDARIN)) A lot?

((MANDARIN)) Yea, there are a lot

((MANDARIN)) In your school?

((MANDARIN)) No

((MANDARIN)) Not at school

((MANDARIN)) A lot of restaurant, markets..etc

((MANDARIN)) That's for sure

((MANDARIN)) You don't know?

((MANDARIN)) Do you live here?

((MANDARIN)) I live here, but it's been over a year since I came here

((MANDARIN)) It's been over a year so...I really don't know about a lot here

((MANDARIN)) I'm not so familiar with the area

((MANDARIN)) Because you spend a lot of time working?

((MANDARIN)) Almost everyday?

((MANDARIN)) Not everyday

((MANDARIN)) At this time it's the New Year. It's more busy

((MANDARIN)) If it's the usual time..Monday and Tuesdays are my days off

((MANDARIN)) For now, I work everyday. Around this time I don't have much time

((MANDARIN)) Is your family here?

((MANDARIN)) They're all here

((MANDARIN)) My whole family is here

((MANDARIN)) Are you married?

((MANDARIN)) I'm already old!

((MANDARIN)) I'm already very old

((MANDARIN)) You are very old?

((MANDARIN)) You don't look like it

((MANDARIN)) My kids are very bog

((MANDARIN)) Taller than me

((MANDARIN)) How old are they?

((MANDARIN)) 15 years old

((MANDARIN)) 15 years old

((MANDARIN)) What about you?

((MANDARIN)) Sorry..I forgot. Chinese women don't like to tell other people their age

((MANDARIN)) Americans don't like to tell there age, but Chinese people don't have this problem

((MANDARIN))It's not like that

((MANDARIN)) Chinese people aren't like that. We don't have that kind of issue

((MANDARIN)) Americans...when I ask them they seem to not be happy about it. Chinese people are OK with it though

((MANDARIN)) I don't mind telling you. I'm over 30 years of age. I'm about to be 40

((MANDARIN)) 40?

((MANDARIN)) 37

((MANDARIN)) Oh, 37

((MANDARIN)) You are the same as me

((MANDARIN)) You are the same as me

((MANDARIN)) I'm also 37

((MANDARIN)) Then..what year are you?

((MANDARIN)) 19..

((MANDARIN)) March 12th

((MANDARIN)) I don't mean this one. I mean the year you were born in

((MANDARIN)) 1981

((MANDARIN)) You're older than I am

((MANDARIN)) Older than you?

((MANDARIN)) I am 82

((MANDARIN)) You are 82

((MANDARIN)) You are the year of the cock

((MANDARIN)) Right

((MANDARIN)) Chicken

((MANDARIN)) You are the year of the chicken and I am the year of the dog

((MANDARIN)) I'm 1 year younger than you are

((MANDARIN)) But in China you are older. For example, if you are 36, in China you add another year, which will make you 37

((MANDARIN)) So, actually in China I am 38 years old?

((MANDARIN)) That's right

((MANDARIN)) He wants to practice with you

((MANDARIN)) He's a bit younger than you?

((MANDARIN)) He's my younger brother

((MANDARIN)) Ask him

((MANDARIN)) Does he understand?

((MANDARIN)) He can understand

((MANDARIN)) I'm afraid that he doesn't understand

((MANDARIN)) Just try

((MANDARIN)) How old are you?

((MANDARIN)) How old are you?

((MANDARIN)) How old are you?

((MANDARIN)) I'm 30 years old

((MANDARIN)) You're not 30 years old

((MANDARIN)) What's his zodiac? Which year

((MANDARIN)) 1984

((MANDARIN)) 84

((MANDARIN)) Then...he is already 35 years old

((MANDARIN)) No

((MANDARIN)) He's 84 and I'm 82. I am 37, then that makes him 35

((MANDARIN)) 34

((MANDARIN)) When do they figure the age? When the mother is pregnant

((MANDARIN)) When pregnant and the baby is born that's 1 years old

((MANDARIN)) So, you are 38. My older brother is also 38

((MANDARIN)) But, when I saw you guys, I though you were younger

((MANDARIN)) They say that the Asians and you guys appear a different age

((MANDARIN)) But white Americans appear a bit older

((MANDARIN)) Do you understand what I was just saying?

((MANDARIN)) I know, but I have to wait a bit to understand

((MANDARIN)) Let's have a conversation

((MANDARIN)) You asked me...3 days or...

((MANDARIN)) Then you tranlate for me

((MANDARIN)) Study?

((MANDARIN)) Study English?

((MANDARIN)) No

((MANDARIN)) You mean, what do you like to do that makes you happy

((MANDARIN)) Right. Your hobbies. When you have time what do you enjoy doing?

((MANDARIN)) Generally

((MANDARIN)) That was my question

((MANDARIN)) I..

((MANDARIN)) I have...I'm different from a lot of Chinese people. My family are religious

((MANDARIN)) Buddhism?

((MANDARIN)) When I have time I do chants, then when I eat I eat vegetables. I don't eat meat nor shrimp. This lifetime I won't eat it that

((MANDARIN)) So..if you ask me how that particular food taste, I wouldn't know how to respond. But I wouldn't tell them

((MANDARIN)) We also don't eat...we are

((MANDARIN)) Eat shrimp?

((MANDARIN)) We eat fish, shrimp, but pork, fish, we don't eat

((MANDARIN)) We are almost vegetarians

((MANDARIN)) Yes, that's right. Mainly eating vegetables

((MANDARIN)) Not the whole day, but everyday I only eat vegetables

((MANDARIN)) Is that for your religion or..?

((MANDARIN)) Because, this is for my heart. They are my friends so I won't eat them

((MANDARIN)) You know how to say that in English? How to translate what you just said

((MANDARIN)) What does it mean? Translate for me

((MANDARIN)) How do you say it..

((MANDARIN)) That is ''Buddha bless you''

((MANDARIN)) But you know, there's all kinds of different Buddhist practices

((MANDARIN)) This is a long story.

((MANDARIN)) Long story

((MANDARIN)) A long story. It really is long

((MANDARIN)) China has a lot of different Buddhist practies. The one I practice is not the same

((MANDARIN)) The one I practice is new..like..the one that is practiced in China for example...for one month and 2 days you can't eat this. You can eat other stuff though

((MANDARIN)) I don't eat everything

((MANDARIN)) This is how it is

((MANDARIN)) We're ready

((MANDARIN)) Do you want a take out box?

((MANDARIN)) Yes

((MANDARIN)) Do you want this rice?

((MANDARIN)) No need

((MANDARIN)) Do you want it?

((MANDARIN)) No

((MANDARIN)) Do you want one bag or separate bags

((MANDARIN)) We have separate boxes or take out bags

((MANDARIN)) Two bags?

((MANDARIN)) I thought you guys were only bit over 20 years old. I didn't expect you guys to be over 30. You don't look like it.

((MANDARIN)) We don't look over 30?

((MANDARIN)) Yea

((MANDARIN)) There are 3 women in that room over there that are 80 years old, but when I saw them I thought they were 60 years old

((MANDARIN)) They're playing Mahjong

((MANDARIN)) Maybe you don't play Mahjong

((MANDARIN)) I know Mahjong

((MANDARIN)) They're playing Mahjong

((MANDARIN)) Americans?

((MANDARIN)) Right

((MANDARIN)) After they finished eating this morning they went in there to play Mahjong

((MANDARIN)) very interesting

((MANDARIN)) This is yours and this is yours, right?

((MANDARIN)) This is mine

((MANDARIN)) This is yours?

((MANDARIN)) This one?

((MANDARIN)) We're eating together

((MANDARIN)) So, you only need one bag?

((MANDARIN)) One bag

((MANDARIN)) This is you guys' second time coming here, right?

((MANDARIN)) Yes, the second time

((MANDARIN)) Last time the girl from Guangdong was here

((MANDARIN)) The girl from Guangdong isn't here today

((MANDARIN)) I'm not sure if she originally works today

((MANDARIN)) How many days in one week does she normally work?

((MANDARIN)) How many days in one week does she work?

((MANDARIN)) She's normally off Monday and Wednesdays

((MANDARIN)) Today is Thursday. Today she works. Maybe she went out with her boyfriend

((MANDARIN)) Her boyfriend is American

((MANDARIN)) Oh yea?

((MANDARIN)) You guys should go to China when you have a chance

((MANDARIN)) For sure

((MANDARIN)) There's a lot of places

((FUZHOUNESE)) I want to go to Fujian

((MANDARIN)) Don't speak our local language again. It's very touching

((MANDARIN)) Because...speaking Chinese is common among foreigners

((MANDARIN)) Right

((MANDARIN)) But...you unexpectedly know how to speak our local language

((MANDARIN)) It's more special

((MANDARIN)) Later I want to spend more time studying

((MANDARIN)) Because if I don't know how to speak English........there's a lot of things that I want to say but I can't say it

((MANDARIN)) You could ask your co-workers that can speak English

((MANDARIN)) The girl from Guangdong can speak, but she doesn't

((MANDARIN)) That..

((MANDARIN)) Mexican?

((MANDARIN)) She doesn't know how to speak

((MANDARIN)) She can speak English

((MANDARIN)) She can speak English, but.....for me the way is having someone that can speak both English and Chinese, who can translate certain things

((MANDARIN)) But when she says something, I don't quite understand

((MANDARIN)) Maybe you don't know what I mean

((MANDARIN)) I understand what you mean

((MANDARIN)) You mean..when you have certain situations where you don't understand, she can't explain it to you?

((MANDARIN)) Yea, translate for me

((MANDARIN)) But if she speaks to me in English I don't quite understand

((MANDARIN)) I prefer from Chinese to English translation

((MANDARIN)) For example, you are now here and I speak with him, if he doesn't understand, you can translate

((MANDARIN)) But she can't do that

((MANDARIN)) You are awesome

((MANDARIN)) I also want to learn. I want to learn English

((MANDARIN)) Learn a lot of languages

((MANDARIN)) OK. Thank you!

((MANDARIN)) OK. Thank you

((MANDARIN)) Thank you. Nice to meet you guys

((MANDARIN)) Likewise

((MANDARIN)) Happy New Year!

((MANDARIN)) Happy New Year!

((MANDARIN)) Great! Nice to meet you guys, really

((MANDARIN)) See you again next time

((MANDARIN)) See you again next time

((MANDARIN)) Goodbye

Why Sea Cucumbers Are So Expensive | So Expensive - Duration: 5:15.

Narrator: Cucumbers usually cost under $3 a kilo.

But sea cucumbers can set you back over $3,000 a kilo.

In fact, they're so valuable

people will risk their lives to get ahold of one.

They might not look it, but sea cucumbers

are pretty special creatures.

Just ask this guy, Steven Purcell,

one of the world's foremost experts on sea cucumbers.

Purcell: They're quite strange animals.

They don't have any limbs, they don't have any eyes.

They have a mouth and they have an anus

and a whole bunch of organs in between.

Narrator: These otherworldly animals

have been prized as a delicacy in Asia for centuries,

where the wealthiest class would eat the animals

as a nutritious high-protein treat.

But it wasn't until the 1980s that demand exploded.

A growing middle class in China

meant more people could afford the luxury.

Today, they're typically dried and packaged in ornate boxes,

then given as gifts and served on special occasions.

So, the fancier and more unusual-looking, the better.

And more expensive.

It turns out.

Purcell: The spikier the animals, the higher the price.

Narrator: And of the 1,250 different species

of sea cucumber in the world,

the Japanese sea cucumber takes the cake.

Purcell: Imagine some sort of mystical dragon

slug with all these sort of spikes coming out of it.

Narrator: At up to $3,500 a kilo,

it's the most expensive sea cucumber on the market.

Compared to other varieties, like the Golden Sandfish,

Dragonfish, and Curry Fish.

And even if you order a common species on Amazon,

you could still pay over $170 for a plate.

Besides presentation, cucumber connoisseurs also value

thick, chewy bodies, and to a lesser extent, taste.

But the experience of eating them

is only part of their appeal.

Turns out sea cucumbers contain high levels

of a chemical called fucosylated glycosaminoglycan

in their skin, which people across Asia have been using

to treat joint problems like arthritis for centuries,

and more recently in Europe, where people are using it

to treat certain cancers and to reduce blood clots.

The sea cucumber craze now comes from all sides.

You have the original Asian delicacy demand

that started in the 1980s, and the new interest

from Western pharmaceutical companies.

In response, nations have clamored

to harvest their local species.

From Morocco to the United States to Papua New Guinea,

everyone wants in on the sea cucumber trade.

Purcell: It's just spread like a contagion

from one country to another.

Narrator: For example, from 1996 to 2011,

the number of countries exporting sea cucumbers

exploded from 35 to 83.

But unfortunately, sea cucumbers couldn't handle the strain.

In Yucatan, Mexico, for example,

divers saw a 95% drop in their harvest

just between 2012 and 2014,

and that's a problem for everyone.

For one, because the more sea cucumbers are harvested,

the rarer and more expensive they become.

Average prices rose almost 17% worldwide

between 2011 and 2016. And the rarer these animals get,

the deeper divers are swimming to find them.

That's when fishing gets dangerous.

Purcell: Some countries, they're doing that

without either a lot of training.

In some of the tropical countries,

you're getting a lot of people either

becoming paralyzed through decompression sickness.

Narrator: So far, at least 40 Yucatan divers

have died trying to harvest sea cucumbers.

And as demand continues to increase,

the problem is only getting worse.

Of the 70 or more species of exploited sea cucumbers,

7 are now classified as endangered,

all through exploitation, forcing

numerous fisheries worldwide to shut down

and damaging local economies in the process.

So, why not farm sea cucumbers

and leave the wild ones alone?

Well, it's easier said than done,

since many larvae die before reaching maturity,

and those that do survive take two to six years

to grow to a marketable size.

That said, aquaculture for a few varieties

has started to take off.

Like with that fancy Japanese sea cucumber.

Purcell: There's now aquaculture in China in the billions.

Narrator: Hopefully more species will be farmed

instead of fished in the future,

if not to protect local economies

and help develop potentially life-saving drugs,

then at least to preserve a fascinatingly bizarre animal.

What We Know About 'Top Gun: Maverick' | SO FAR - Duration: 2:35.

- I feel the need.

- [Together] The need for speed.

- [Narrator] Tom Cruise found the need for speed in 1986,

and it hasn't disappeared.

Years of insane airborne stunts later,

Maverick is back for one of the most

anticipated sequels of next year.

Here's what we know about Top Gun: Maverick so far.

(intense percussion)

Ever since the original Top Gun left audiences buzzing,

Tom Cruise and mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer

have been dancing around the sequel.

The project reportedly came close to takeoff in 2012,

until the tragic death of director Tony Scott

grounded the franchise for some time.

Four years later, Bruckheimer took to Twitter,

sharing proof of a weekend-long

creative session with his star.

This news garnered countless likes

from fans all over the world,

and one really influential friend, Paramount,

who green lit the film in 2017.

(intriguing electronic music)

Tom Cruise returns to the danger zone

as top pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

Set in the present, the star student from 1986

is now the teacher, with a class full of pilots

as arrogant and macho as he used to be.

Will there be egos?

Definitely.

Will there be karaoke?

Hopefully.

But we do know drones will be the main competition here.

And jets.

But for Mav and his disciples, the threat

of becoming obsolete hangs in the air as much as death.

(intense rock music)

The film is manned by Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski,

who's re-teaming with Cruise

after their sci-fi mystery Oblivion.

Yeah, Cruise flew in that one too.

In front of the camera, Val Kilmer returns as ...

- [Pilot] That's him, Ice Man.

- [Narrator] Which marks the actor's first role

following a battle with throat cancer.

New to the ranks is Miles Teller,

with all the makings of a perfect protege,

given the drive he showed in Whiplash.

Teller will play the son of Maverick's

original partner, Goose, who won't be back.

- You gotta let him go.

You gotta let him go.

- [Narrator] Kelly McGillis is not returning to base.

This time around, it'll be Beautiful Mind star

Jennifer Connelly sharing any bikes with Mav.

Cruise is joined by other Hollywood frequent fliers as well.

Ed Harris, who left the ground in The Right Stuff.

Glen Powell, who soared in Hidden Figures.

And Jon Hamm, who had a rough time

at 32,000 feet in Mad Men.

- You can relax now.

We're leveled off.

- I am relaxed.

(energetic rock music)

- [Narrator] So when does Mav take our breath away?

The film was on course for 2019

before Paramount pushed a full year

to give the production the time they needed

to coordinate breathtaking flight sequences.

With a summer release in its sights,

Top Gun: Maverick will now kick the tires

and light the fires on June 26, 2020.

- Yee-haw!

(laughing)

Great balls of fire!

Road rage driver gets so angry he speeds off and leaves his wife behind - Duration: 5:05.

A driver became so angry during a road rage incident that he ended up speeding off - and left his wife behind.

Dashcam footage captured by a delivery driver shows the moment he gets out his car to confront another motorist.

The delivery man, referred to as Joao, then approaches the driver who begins to 'swear and gesture at him' in a Plymouth car park.

The video then shows that once Joao left his vehicle, things heated up.

The 28-year-old told Plymouth Live that the argument started when he was waiting to park in a bay at Barbican Leisure Park.

He was waiting to pick up food from Tex-Mex restaurant chain Chiquito, but ended in a fight with another driver.

Joao said: "I was behind his car and he reversed without an indicator, so I started beeping at him when he was reversing.

"He was swearing at me and gesturing with his fingers, so I got out of my car and told him to watch his mouth, and I pointed at him."

Joao, who has lived in Plymouth for ten years and has worked as a delivery driver for four years, said he invested money in a dashcam because road rage incidents are so common.

Once Joao left his vehicle the man then gets out of his vehicle and pushes Joao.

Things get hard to see for a few seconds, however Joao insists there was no punches thrown and just shoving.

"His wife was saying she was going to call the police, and I said, 'Good, you'd be doing me a favour' as I had it on dashcam and hadn't done anything wrong."

Joao explained the man "pushed his wife away and started swearing at the camera".

"After that his wife shouted at him to go away, and he told her to f*** off," he said.

The footage shows the man get into the car, speak to the woman, who is then still holding onto the door as he drives off and leaves her behind.

Joao said he "didn't bother" to report the incident as nobody was injured and he did not see what good could come from it.

He said: "If I'm in the wrong I'm the first one to put my hands up and say sorry.

"This is the worst [road rage incident], but to be honest I'm quite used to it, which is why I act so naturally."

Mum may be forced into contact with stalker ex-boyfriend so he can see their son - Duration: 5:28.

A woman may be forced into contact with her stalker ex-boyfriend after a judge ordered he build bridges with her so he can visit his son.

Angelika Rozanka pleaded with the courts to slap her ex - Jaroslaw Pelczynski - with a contact ban after he took photos of her in bed through a keyhole.

Pelczynski, 43, admitted to targeting her during a hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court, Scotland, reports the Daily Record.

He also bombarded her with dozens of text messages after they split and spied on her. The creep would even follow her onto buses and would stare silently at her.

But Sheriff Seith Ireland delayed the punishment to allow him to take steps to grant him visitation rights with their child.

He said: "I appreciate you have been back in court a couple of times.

"The position I want to ascertain is if you can have contact with your son.

"This does not seem to have been done for financial reasons."

Milly Dowler killer Levi Bellfield 'was part of child sex gang that used raping room'

The pair had lived in England and been together for eight years before they split after moving north.

The court heard Pelczynski acted out after his ex stopped him from seeing their six-year-old son.

Prosecutor Colin Wilson told how he turned nasty after they broke up.

He said: "The accused turned up drunk at the home of a friend where she was staying.

"He was shouting and swearing through the door. These comments were aimed at his former partner.

"He was shouting and accusing her of having an affair with somebody inside the house.

"She later went to his house to pick up items and possessions belonging to their son.

"When she was there, she found two images lying on the bed.

"These were taken through a front door keyhole and that keyhole was at the home where she was residing at the time. One image showed her lying on the bed."

Pelczynski earlier claimed he would launch a legal fight to gain access to his boy.

But he admitted he had been too skint to start the process when he was called back into the dock.

Defence lawyer Tony Callahan insisted his client had struggled after losing his job.

He said: "There has been a change in his personal circumstances.

"He had a restaurant in Glasgow. Unfortunately, that was not successful and he is longer in work.

"There has been no contact for a considerable period of time. There has been no further access of any kind."

Pelcynski has been barred from approaching his former partner and told to keep away from her home while the case is ongoing.

Sheriff Ireland advised his lawyer he should start legal proceedings for access to the child.

He added: "There may be some advantage of allowing some initial period of months to see if he can make some contact."

Pelczynski, of Stock Street, has been ordered to return to court on May 7.
