Today is teacher's day in Brazil.
And as a teacher myself, this is a very special date!
To celebrate it, I wanna share with you a personal story about teaching and the journey of learning.
So, this is interesting. I started out professionally as a lawyer
So I went to law school, after finishing it I became a lawyer, as is expected,
and I had some frustrations, you know, in the legal profession.
Which led me to the realization that I would spend much more time
interested in the stories of entrepreneurs than in anything related to legal practice at all!
Which is funny, right? So, umm
Soon then I decided to take a leap of faith
and start my own company, Inglês Sem Medo, which is the page that you're watching right now, right?
Anyway, but it's not all about social media, I also have students.
And this is what's so interesting, so,
the legal profession in Brazil is a very traditional and well-established profession,
so, if you tell people that you're a lawyer, especially if you went to a good school,
as I was fortunate to, to go to a good school
it is
very hard
thinking about your identity
to leave
that beaten path to do something different, right?
and this was something that I
was, in a certain way, criticized for
when I decided to quit being a lawyer and start giving English classes.
People would say, like, it's unbelievable
like, he's leaving such a good career
so many promises to do something that, you know,
who isn't an English teacher these days, right?
and, um, but it was a ride, man, I have to tell you, it was a ride, to
develop as a teacher and to start liking it, to start
um, building my identity around the new profession.
So at first, I only thought of myself as an entrepreneur.
as someone whose job was to grow a company,
to build a brand,
to expand through social media
and, you know, to prove everybody wrong, that I could do it,
and that it would be a much more rewarding path for me
to do what I was doing, to start my own company, than it was to be a teacher, right?
but slowly, this is what happened.
So
I remember that, at first when you start out as a teacher,
and you see one of your students struggling
to find a word, to conjugate a verb,
or to look for some piece of knowledge that's in there somewhere
you know, you can imagine, if you know the word right away, which is usually the case,
your first impulse is to go right in and help straight away
But soon then I learnt that that's not the optimal way to teach, you have to
you know, you have to kinda give the student
the room they need to find the answers for themselves and to do those neural pathways
and this is by the way, something that I learned with a student
She told me, like, you know, in giving me feedback,
she told me that it would be important for me to
to try to leave more room for the students to find out
their own answers, and so I did.
and it blew me, blew me away
the way in which people have it in them
and it's just a matter of pressing the right buttons,
and, you know, giving them the opportunity to, to build it,
and students were giving me answers that I could never have expected
of things that they knew, that I had no idea that they knew
and so, to see this growth and to learn with students, you know, it's such a beautiful profession.
That I couldn't help but to say today that
teachers are very undervalued in our society
not only in our society, I hear about this from several countries around the world.
but especially in Brazil, you know, teachers don't earn that much,
they don't have much respect socially,
as a profession.
and yet, everything that we know is because someone taught us about it, right?
it might be someone who taught it professionally, or not,
but we all learn through contact with other people.
And so, throughout my path in this journey,
I have developed to a point
in which now I'm very proud to say that I'm a teacher
as much as I'm an entrepeneur, so those are now in equal standing,
um, in my professional identity, which I think is a beautiful thing
I also wanna tell you that, um, there are teachers, very important teachers,
very important teachers,
who come to us through other names, so to speak,
they're not gonna present themselves to you as a teacher,
they might not even think of themselves as a teacher,
but they are!
So lately, I've been learning
a lot, a lot about entrepreneurship, about, um, marketing,
and much of that, has been through people who are not teachers themselves, they're entrepreneurs.
You know if you have a mind that's eager for knowledge,
you can find it anywhere and you can learn
from anybody.
By no means is this
a way to say that everybody's a teacher so you shouldn't value teachers.
You should absolutely value teachers,
but do also keep an open mind, and you can learn from anyone, man.
So, this has been it, I also have a video,
which I think might interest you,
in which I talk about how to pronounce the word teacher,
which for brazilians sometimes is a little hard.
And in that one, I also talk about the difference
between the terms teacher and professor and how you would use them, right?
So have a look, it's been released also today,
and that's been it, so I wanna, again,
shoutout to all teachers out there.
If you have a friend who you would like to see this message, just tag them down here.
And I'll see you next time!
Peace!
