Divas of Karachi Ep. 1 "Karachi Rocks for Me" - Duration: 8:04.(upbeat music)
(pop music)
- People think that Pakistan is a dangerous place to be.
- Terrorism and bomb blasts and mafias and
no area is safe.
- Hidden behind layers of burka or hijab.
- Just that one word, terrorism,
which has come along with Pakistan and has to be erased.
(hip-hop music)
- My name is Hadia Khan and I live in Karachi, Pakistan.
People head to Karachi because
they're looking for some economic opportunity.
Because there's just so much happening in this city.
I run a brand called The Pinktree Company
along with two of my partners.
We have Sheena, then our third business partner Mohsin.
- [Mohsin] (speaks in Urdu)
- But that was the plan.
- And if nobody likes it?
They don't buy it, then what will happen?
- I'll wear it.
- And I'll wear it.
- Mohsin Sayeed is the designer behind Pinktree.
He's creative, he's quirky,
pays a lot of attention to detail.
- You never understand what I want.
- He's extremely opinionated, I mean
that's a good thing, but at times it's a battle.
But at least it'll give an idea to these guys
when they make the paper for us.
- [Mohsin] Hadia is the operations.
- You do realize that by the 14th this needs to be ready?
- Yeah.
She looks after everything.
I just issue orders.
- [Hadia] This is a startup company with limited finances.
We just need to think constantly,
be on our toes, and make success possible.
We've still got a long way to go.
(middle-eastern music)
- Good, how are you?
Thank you. - Perfect.
These are our auction
item lists. - Yes, you just gave me
one of these. - Okay, perfect.
- I'm Nazneen Tariq Khan, Karachi rocks for me.
- I've got somebody wearing a identical shirt!
(laughs)
- Like, if someone has lived in New York,
they cannot live anywhere else.
Same with someone who's lived in Karachi,
they cannot live anywhere else.
- When you bid, keep in mind
that you're bidding to make somebody's future.
- [Auctioneer] Nazeen Tariq's earrings
are absolutely gorgeous.
- Like today is for amazing schools all over Pakistan
where they're teaching kids for free.
We are all women over here
who are go-getters, getting things done.
- We want to serve you a nice tea,
and there's going to be a band and music.
- Elite for me, doesn't mean that they are rich.
Elite for me means that they do a lot
of charitable work, good causes, that's all.
For me, those are elite women,
not the ones who are loaded.

- My name is Uzma Khan.
My passion for driving started when I was in grade six,
and I wanted to learn how to drive, and I did.
And my mother was my partner in crime

I would never stop her.
Where I am, I am everywhere.

- People in Karachi do work hard,
but they play hard too.
How are you?
- [Hadia] I'm good.
(laughs)
- Hanging out with close friends, it's just the norm here.
(doorbell rings)
- [Hadia] Chief guest has arrived.
- [Partygoer] With this delicious cake.
- Wow, this is so nice, thank you.
- We juggle between work, social life, family life,
and after so many years of interacting
with very grumpy people, I love, I crave good company.
Uzma for me, is that.
- [Uzma] I don't know how to do the volume for this, but.
- [Partygoer] Who's driving this?
- [Uzma] I'm driving.
- Oh wow! - She's driving.
This was on National TV.
- Nice. - This was my second lap.
In Karachi, there was a rally, and this time
they were first time they were ever having
ladies four by four drivers.
(speaks in Urdu)
(laughing)
It's actually a thrill,
it thrills, but it kills.
It's crazy.
I finished

here.
- Not good, not good
Yeah, that's why we left now, we don't do.
- God
- yeah
- Allah
- Crazy
I stopped off-roading.
My love for four by four is still there,
but I feel a little scared now.
(upbeat music)
- I love Pakistan, but for other people,
Karachi's like a terrorist city.
- Is New York a dangerous city?
Is London dangerous?
Is Paris a dangerous city?
So, whichever way you want to see it.
- It's a beautiful, mad, crazy city,
it offers a lot of excitement.
Is it luxurious? Yeah.
You live like a king over here.
- This is the place to be.
I could live anywhere in the world,
but I choose to be in Pakistan.
- I could not live anywhere else in the world.
- Can't live without Karachi.
- I cannot live anywhere else.
- We are women of Pakistan.
(applause and cheers)
Democracies have actually given power to people
who don't even understand what they're doing.
- It's a process, okay?
- [Hadia] Do you think people will come?
- I'm scared.
A lot of hard work has gone into our wedding wear line.
I hope people turn up.
Where is everyone?

4 books that made me CRY (ESP audio | ENG/ESP subs) - Duration: 10:53.Hi people! Here we are one week more. Today I'll tell you about the books that made me cry the hardest.
Those books that destroy your potato, get you depressed, make you soak your pillow with snot... all that jazz.
N. 4: THE SECRET SONG OF THE WORLD by José Antonio Cotrina.
Weird enough, because it's the only one in this list that leans toward horror and thriller
rather than romance, but... hehe.
My boyfriend gave it to me, I can't recall if for my birthday or Christmas.
He gave it to me, I read it...
And after that, after having lots of fun reading it... I wiltered down.
With that, I mean that I was heartbroken, to put it nicely.
And my boyfrien felt so bad about buying that book,
and he said "Didn't you like it?" and I was like "Yes, very much..."
"...I just don't feel like eating lately."
It'd been like 4 days since I'd finished the book.
He'd say "Had I known how you'd get, I wouldn't have bought it!" and I was like "Don't worry, it was so pretty,
it's just that I suffer, I carry it inside."
Since then, when somebody asks "Hey, that book on your shelf, is it cool?"
I answer "I can lend it to you if you want, but I warn you: you may end up in the E.R."
What's THE SECRET SONG OF THE WORLD about?
It's about a girl who doesn't remember anything about her past and lives with her adoptive family,
her name is Ariadna, and no one, not even her, knows why one of her eyes is completely black,
nor how could they retrieve her from a fire without a single burn,
an incident that's the start of her memory so far.
So, a moment comes when people of her past, unremembered by her,
start showing up. They look very dangerous, and they aren't even
completely human.
Ariadna finds herself in the need to protect
the normal people around her, the ones who adopted her, the guy she loves (a cinnamon roll),
and at the same time remember who is she really,
what's her past, and what binds her to the guy
who just showed up, who kills too easily,
and who shares a bond with her
too powerful to even be natural.
It's a book that makes you keep hope, but sometimes it hits you without a warning.
And you're left to die. Sure, José Antonio Contrina is known for that, but in this books
he outdid himself. That's why
THE SECRET SONG OF THE WORLD is on my TOP 4 of books that made me cry
like a banshee after reading them.
N.3 is JUDEA'S LOVERS by Danielle Pinault.
This is a historical romance,
but not the happy kind, with little hearts and petals flying above you.
It's a story where Sara, a widowed girl at 15, lives with her family in Jericho.
It's the time of King Herod, when Romans and Jews were enemies.
One day, on the path between Betania and Jericho, Sara finds a man
badly beaten and injured. It seems that bandits had caught him and left him to die.
She discovers that the man's named Lucius, and is a Roman legionary.
Her neighbors would rather have her leave him die on the spot, but Sara is kind and helpful,
and she's like "I can't leave this man die; I won't make distinctions between a Roman, a Jew or an alien."
So she takes him to her house, puts him in a dark room and takes care of him until the poor guy heals.
He heals very slowly and painfully.
During that long time,
since no one else in her family will get near that Roman mongrel, she's the only one attending him,
and between the two is born a feeling
both their cultures condemn.
This book is pretty, as it lets you know
a bit more about the two cultures of the protagonists,
and that's nice, because we don't get many books set in the Jericho of King Herod.
I don't know if it's completely historical or if licenses were taken. Probably the latter,
but the most important of this book, to me, is that it wrecked me.
All throughout, you're hoping for a happy, perfect ending...
but life is not perfect.
Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win, but I won't tell you what happens in the novel, because it's up to you to read it and find out.
N.2 is CRYING OUT LOVE IN THE CENTER OF THE WORLD, by Kyoichi Katayama.
This story is told the Japanese way.
What does that mean? I really enjoy stories told from other points of view,
especially East Asian, because
they have such a different approach to life than us,
and a different pace. Paused, more focused on details.
Apparently, CRYING OUT LOVE IN THE CENTER OF THE WORLD was a hit in Japan,
it sold millions and millions of copys and, in fact, people liked it so much that mangas,
movies and series were made out of it.
I'd rather not watch them, for I know I'd die if I did so.
So I'll just tell you how about the book itself. It tells the story
of Saku and Aki, two high-school students. They slowly grow closer, despite their differences...
It's teenage love, the purest kind you can imagine, and it makes you...
I don't know about you, but I fell in love in my teenage years and many things here resonated with me,
which made it all much more painful before the final blow. At some point, Aki catches leukemia,
Of course! Because Japanese love to suffer, not like "Nah, we were just fine
until one day, my boyfriend was run over by a bus, so what else can we do?"
NO, they always create lasting pain, a pain
that soak through your marrow, with neverending sickness,
hospitals, grieving that lasts for decades...
Why?! I mean, isn't the world hurting enough already? Did you have to write even worse stuff?
But well...
I'm at fault for reading it, and it's still a beautiful novel. Taking into account that the girl
gets leukemia, you can imagine how the story goes.
I won't tell you more. What I said is no spoiler, as the simplest synopsis of this book will tell you that.
This book made me fall actually sick, I remember... I finished reading it,
closed my Ebook and lay on my side, on the bed, and started weeping and pouring snot until I couldn't breathe.
The TOP 1, my champion of smashing hearts to dust and put fear in your soul
is THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE by Audrey Niffenegger (I don't know if I pronounced it right).
It's the only one I have right here, because the others were kindle editions or I lent them away.
I'll read the synopsis.
"A fascinating and unconventional love story. Henry is a librarian and suffers a strange genetic condition that makes him
involuntarily travel through time.
Her wife, Clare, is an artist. Their love is passionate and they only wish
to live a normal life. However, Henry's travels to the past and the future, which create compromising
and funny situations alike, are a challenge to their relationship.
A novel that encourages thinking about love lasting and the passing of time, about the unrepeatable thrill of the first sensations,
both in a relationship and in life.
A read that, leading you from laughter to emotion, will move you. An original, unforgettable story."
This books makes you see that love isn't really the moments of passion,
those we always see in movies. Actually, what makes a marriage,
what makes a relationship last forever,
is the effect,
the tremendous effect the couple have on each other.
Henry and Clare wouldn't exist without each other and their influence. They wouldn't be the same people.
They've built each other, and it's impossible to conceive them separately.
It's a healthy relationship, though, where each one has
time to themselves, each one has a personality that can work without the other,
but to them, happiness
comes from
the moments they share together. To this day, this is one of my favorite books.
But Holy Mother of Christ, I never soaked a pillow with tears and snot so badly.
I couldn't breathe, I was... (panting)
Crying so hard. I'm perhaps too sensitive. Maybe you read it and you're like "pff"
But... It's MY TOP 4,
not YOUR TOP 4, and I'll f*ck it however I well please! (It's a Spanish joke)
If you're the kind of people who likes suffering, like when
"The Notebook" is on TV at 7pm, and you stay and watch it, despite knowing how it ends...
then give these books a chance, and tell me what you thought!
Now, books aside,
I'm hosting another Art GIVEAWAY on several of my social sites:

Vance Joy - Lay It On Me (Lyrics / Lyric Video) Said The Sky Remix - Duration: 4:05.Lay it all on me now
Lay it all on me now
Lay it all on me now
Will you lay it all on me now
oh baby
If all my defenses come down
Who am I kidding
Your love's always finding me out
Lay it all on me now
Lay it all on me now
Lay it all on me now
Lay it all on me now
Will you lay it all on me now
oh baby
If all my defenses come down
Who am I kidding
Your love's always finding me out
Everything starts at your skin, so new
Let me in
Put it in my coat before I go
Write it on a piece of paper, honey
hidden in plain sight, Why'd I take so long
I found you
Everything is new and different
Snow comes down
Lay it all on me now
Lay it all on me now
Lay it all on me now
Will you lay it all on me now
Will you lay it all on me now
oh baby
If all my defenses come down
Who am I kidding
Your love's always finding me out
Everything starts at your skin, so new
Let me in
Later when I'm sitting all alone
Hidden in a place you know I'll find it
Put it in my coat before I go
Write it on a piece of paper, honey
And I just wanna know what's in your head
You cut through
Anyone could see that I'm wasted
I'm so gone
