Youtube daily do Nov 2 2017

hey guys I'm back with another video um I just wanted to check in with you guys

because I got off the phone with a really good friend of mine and she was

having a really hard day you know she's a really happy person but sometime happy

people get the short end of the stick why is that I don't quite know one thing

I can say is people who take advantage of people that are happy are not happy

themselves and one thing I have learnt in life people might not share with you

how to grow your YouTube channel or how to make money online or how to make

money in general so you can live better it's not gonna make you happy but for

you to live better but I think sharing how to be happy how to love one another

and how to just get along it's free and I don't care if you like to look at

prank videos DIYs how-to videos or vlogs where you're watching people walking

around with the camera doing their daily activities sharing this piece of

information on how to better your life is is is a free tool if you're trying to

figure it out yourself you know join the way join my way you know join the way we

can do this together I always say to myself that is really sad when you see

somebody trying to be on the road of being happy with themselves and people

just stay trying to sabotage that struggle of trying to be happy with

themselves and I think the reason why people do that is because they see it

themselves that that person is trying to change they don't want them to change

they want them to stay stuck with them and one thing I'm gonna have to tell you

guys is this is a big piece of advice and you might not you might know it but

you're not using it you know you're not applying it if people are trying to hold

you down you must stay completely away from them

you're not doing yourself a justice or a favor by keeping them around life is

simply too short do you ever look at the - in between the day that you were born

and the day that you were still here if you're looking at this video but the day

that people pass that's it's basically you know how short life is and I'm

telling you right now you know you got to center yourself around people who

want things in life and want to see you happy and want to see you grow and I'm

not gonna tell you one thing but they mean another and when they do tell you

something they're gonna tell you what you need to hear not what you want to

hear those are true friends those are people who are content with their lives

those are people who are happy for you because they're happy for themselves and

trust and believe when you change your thoughts to negativity to positivity and

you hang around positive people and you start doing positive things there's no

way that you'll want to turn back to negativity you know a good example of

not wanting to turn back if you break up with your boyfriend and he breaks up

with you you go through a lot of pain you wake up

thinking about them and you go to sleep thinking about them this is just an

example once you get over that breakup and you stop feeling yourself again you

get control of who you are again you start to feel happy you start to do

things that you normally wouldn't do because when you was in that

relationship your whole day was consumed with that relationship now you're

starting to do things that you used to do for fun now that everything's back to

normal why would you want to go back to that

situation when you know that if it's not a good outcome the next time you're

gonna go through the struggle again of waking up thinking about that person and

going to sleep thinking about that person and being unhappy and not being

able to eat and crying every day just having them on your mind worrying and

consuming your whole entire day knowing that we're not promised tomorrow but

we're consumed in our day with something that is not going to change which is

that break up why would you want to go back to that situation it's like this if

you wouldn't physically take a knife and cut yourself why would you do it

mentally so with all that being said guys please subscribe share and like

this video like the video now I could have said it at the beginning of the

video but I'm saying it now and make it a favorite and I'll see you guys in the

next video bye for now

Chatbot Course - DO and DO NOT of Dialog Design [Build Your Own Chatbot] - Duration: 4:54.

It would be easy to get lost in the details of how to implement the chatbot, and temporarily

forget the bigger picture.

In this quick video, I wanted to briefly touch on a few subjects that are worth considering

when designing a chatbot.

The first question we should ask is in regards the positioning of our chatbot.

Let's start with its role.

Is it going to act as an information kiosk, a customer support agent, a marketer, or a

sale representative?

Our flower shop bot example will not really look into customer orders or provide post-sale

support.

It will however provide information and in the process, also help us sell some flowers.

Keep the role in mind when designing chatbots for your own business.

Next, let's consider its purpose.

In our case, we want to help our customers in making the right choices when buying flowers,

and reassure them that the flowers will be delivered on time.

In the process, perhaps selling more flowers and cutting down on a few calls to our hypothetical

shop.

Another element worth considering is proactivity.

How proactive or reactive do we want our chatbot to be?

A more proactive chatbot will tend to solicit information from the user, engaging and guiding

them rather than passively waiting for a question to come along.

Depending on the type of chatbot you build, one approach might be more favorable than

the other.

In many cases, a combination of the two may be the best of both worlds.

Asking questions and guiding, when it's relevant, and sitting back waiting for the

user when it's more appropriate.

Tone and personality are also important.

Do we want our chatbot to sound more formal or more friendly?

Just adjusting a few words in a sentence can lead to our chatbot sounding a lot nicer/inviting

or, conversely, to come across as completely distant.

This matters because chatbots with a friendly tone and a bit of personality to them tend

to be perceived more favorably.

We start thinking that the chatbot might be more useful, even intelligent, than it actually

is.

There are no universally right or wrong answers here, but thinking about what we want our

chatbot to accomplish and how we want it to come across will go a long way as we approach

building the chatbot.

It will enable us to choose the right dialog flow, words, and tone, as well as deciding

what to leave in and what to exclude from the scope of our chatbot.

In a previous video I mentioned that our scope is common questions and not all possible questions.

When you define the positioning, so the role, purpose, and proactivity, for a chatbot, you'll

quickly find out that the scope is even narrower than that.

Which is a good thing.

You don't want a chatbot that is a jack-of-all-trades.

It's better to have the chatbot handle fewer types of questions but do a great job with

those.

What we implement should reflect the positioning, tone, and personality we set out to provide

to our users.

In terms of good chatbot design, there are three fundamental rules that you should follow.

First rule: Avoid using yes or no in your replies.

If your chatbot fails to interpret the question correctly, a yes or no answer can be misleading

or provide the wrong information.

For example, you might be tempted to set the response for "Is delivery free?" to "Yes,

it is".

But what happens when the user asks the bot, "Is delivery free or do I have to pay?"

Watson will pick up the right intent, but the "Yes, it is" answer won't work here.

There are situations, perhaps because of negatives introduced in the input, where the chatbot

will respond yes, when a human would correctly respond no.

It's far better to provide an answer that covers the topic of delivery price, without

including an absolute yes or no element within it.

So "Deliveries are free." is definitely a much better option than "Yes, it is".

This brings us to our second rule.

When possible, incorporate part of the user's question in your response.

For example, say "I understand that you're looking for help with an order.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to look into orders that have already been placed."

And then perhaps we would have the chatbot refer the customer to our phone number or

email address, in order to help them perhaps speak with a live person about their concern.

This will further cement, in our user's mind, the relative intelligence of our chatbot,

even though it technically failed to directly provide what the customer was hoping to find

out.

The third rule is in regards to the length of the chatbot answers.

Succinct and accurate answers are best.

We want to be informative, but not reply with a wall of text.

When a wall of text is an absolute must, to convey the information, then deflecting by

sending the user to an informative page is a better approach.

In the next video, we'll finally get to build our flower shop chatbot from scratch.

Vai Viajar Para a Europa? Essas dicas são para vocês! - As Viagens do Gerson - Duration: 6:30.

Do we need a visa to go to Europe?

No.

It's not like that.

Even us,

brazilian people,

do not needing a visa to go to

one of the countries which are part of Europe,

We need some other documents.

And be sure that if you won't have all of these documents,

They will send you back home.

It won't be cool.

What do you need to think, and organize,

When you'll travel to Europe?

First, the passport!

How will you get into one of these countries?

Showing your electricity bill?

I love my passport!!!

And if it's at three month of it's vality,

you cannot travel!

Attention at the date of vality of your passport!!!

You need to prove how much money you're bringing with you.

Cash or debit or credit card.

But I have only a hundred reais!! HELP ME!!

You'll go back home.

SCRIPT OF YOUR TRIP!

Do a script showing all the places and events

that you wanna see and participate

They'll see that you did a research about the country

And know, at least, a little bit, about it.

It can help you a lot!

Do it in english!

But Gerson, I don't speak english!

It's ok. You can use Google Translator.

Even with some language errors, they'll understand

and see that you did a research. This is great!

WHERE YOU WILL STAY!!

Show them the adress where you'll stay.

Hotel, hostel...

And if you're in doubt, still didn't decided

Ok, put both adresses

and tell the truth:

- I still didn't decided where I'll stay.

I did it when I arrived in Stockholm.

Invite letter!

It's a document where someone who invited you says that it's responsible for you

by the duration of your trip.

And how do I get this, Gerson?

Well, first you must have a friend, someone you know, a love...

a legal resident in this country.

In this letter, beyond the person says he/she responsible for you,

is this trip,

You must put all the information of this person,

Phone number, full name, email, I.D, address...

If you want it,

You can ask the person to send to you a copy of this passporto or I.D.

There are many possibilities of invite letters.

He/she take it to a registry and send you by mail,

Or send only the letter by mail,

Or you get all their information, put it in the letter and print.

This is what I did.

I put at the description of this video a link where you can download it.

There are many formats of invite letters.

DON'T FORGET IT! IT MUST ME SOMEONE IN A LEGAL SITUATION!

If your father, your girlfriend is travelling and say:

- Come over here! I'll pay your bills and it will be ok!

And send a letter saying that it will be responsible for you,

It wont work!!

It can be terrible for you!

Back ticket!

It's great when you'll be there with your back ticket in hands!

You show them and it will be ok.

CLOTHES!

Use comfortable clothes.

Don't start with crazy things like:

- I'm going to Europe!!!

I need to go as if I was an allegory!

NO!

You won't go to Europe using the clothes you use when you wash your bathroom!

Well, so...

You won't travel using the clothes you used

when you were godfather or maid of honor.

Do a harmonious combination,

And travel with a simple and comfortable clothes.

REMEMBER!

That it's not a samba school parade!!

About the clothes in your suitcase,

If you carry a lot of clothes that doesn't make sense

about the weather of that period you're travelling

They will do some questions about it!

But I feel so much cold!!

Ok if you feel so much cold,

Now, carry a lot of clothes for winter, when it's summertime

Well, there's something wrong.

We don't need a visa,

But to go to a lot of countries in Europe,

we need the Schengen agreement!

Basically it's a deal about some countries,

that allow people pass through these countries,

Without all that process when you're arriving in a new country

It's like a domestic flight.

So, research to know if the country of your dreams

is in or out of Schenger agreement.

It's very simple to get this document.

Basically it's a health insurance in the amout of thirty thousand euros.

No. You won't pay thirty thousand euros.

The officers, they wanna see this document.

AND HOW DO I GET THIS?

It's so simple.

Look for an insurer.

You can need. Maybe you'll break a leg,

neck,

clavicle,

a finger,

What if they break my heart?

{\an8}HE DIED! WHAT A PITY! I GUESS!

{\an8}There's no insure for it, baby.

And there's another way to get this document without pay for it.

No, there's nothing wrong.

According to your credit card,

Schengen agreement is included at the service.

But, wait!

It's when the trouble starts!!

WHY?

The card's attendant do a big mess!!!!

And let you lost and lost and lost!

I tried to get this document, using my international credit card.

You know what happened?

I call, 'cause I wanna know what I needed to do,

They give me the information, I entered the site,

I registered,

Always an error message.

I called again.

Everytime I called,

and a different person talked to me,

he/she gave me a tottally different information.

<i>The site is with problems. Try again later.</i>

<i>You cannot have this document using a different</i>

<i>card that you used to buy the ticket.</i>

I'd like to understand the logic about it.

<i>Schengen is available to all the international cards.</i>

I heard this two or three times.

I tried a lot of times,

and a lot of attendants giving me a lot of WRONG information,

Another attendant, (I don't know where she came from..)

She said: - You won't get this document here.

Even you're having an international card,

it doesn't mean that you'll have this document.

It's not for all the international cards!

Only a few. :(

Maybe the best thing to do is go to your agency,

Talk to your manager,

Then he/she will tell you if you have or not this document.

If yes for you, GREAT!!!

If not, you'll need to pay.

And remember!! This document is valid only for the time of your trip!

Gerson, I need to buy it! Can you tell me where?

Ask at the comments and I'll reply you!

I hope this video help you to do an amazing trip!!

And don't forget it!!

How to Motivate Yourself for Greatness | Where Do You See Yourself in a Decade? - Duration: 12:31.

what's going on guys it's Brian from BG media innovation and I got a great one

for you here today before we get started though go ahead and hit that subscribe

button that way you get notified when I release a new video and you can stay up

to date on the content because as you know being an online entrepreneur or

making any money online regardless of the niche or the method a big part of

that involves staying ahead of the competition so with that being said

let's just jump right in

hey guys I have a great one for you today

today I want to talk to you about how you can motivate yourself not just you

know for a short term but over the long haul and stay motivated in that respect

so a lot of people talk about motivation and you know I was a big proponent of

you know watching motivational videos on YouTube I think that that's a great

starting point but at the same time just like I talked about in my last video and

if you haven't seen the last video on the books that I recommend you know

everybody read whether you're an entrepreneur or whatever I'll actually

link that in the description so look down there if you want to check that out

a lot of great content there that you should consume I'm telling you it'll

change your life this will also change your life I'm gonna talk to you about

not just something that I I know of but something I actually practice

anecdotally and it's kind of that self realization that you don't that you hear

people talk about you know here you hear Conor McGregor everybody I'm assuming

those who Conor McGregor is he's the UFC fighter that was like the champion at

like three different weight classes or whatever um big fan and by the way he

talks about and a lot of other people talk about you know Self Realization and

the power of Attraction and stuff like that you know basically imagining stuff

into reality and a lot of the books that actually are American

about that as well but today I want to talk to you about you know I'm a preface

this by talking about a quote from Tony Robbins I was actually reading the other

day and I read this quote that I completely forgot about and it inspired

me to talk to you guys about this and that's that people are not lazy they

simply do not have goals that inspire them and that's so true that couldn't be

more true and I really kind of wanted to it was the inspiration behind this

lecture and this and this um you know video that I wanted to put together to

kind of demonstrate to you guys how you can motivate yourself now the problem

isn't necessarily you know motivation in in that a relative term it's basically

being specific and I'm not talking about you know being as arbitrary as all I

want $10,000 I want I want you know a car biden by this date or this this date

that certainly helps but what I mean is you need emotionally compelling things

that are going to drive you and you know that you're passionate about things that

drive emotions and really will motivate you you know to to go that extra mile to

pump that extra YouTube video out to pump that extra course out to write that

extra paper to put that extra setup when you're working out because I'm a big

proponent of working out to I think that you know you know the by the body and

the mind are are similar in that fashion so I'm gonna giving you an example of

what I do and this is one example this goes back to you know writing your goals

down I also I'm a big proponent of writing your goals down and that's

something that you should practice to you know they I forget who it was but I

remember hearing this thing about in a speech where Harvard did this study back

in I think it was like the 80s of the 90s where they took a graduating class

and they asked the graduating class you know every single by every single body

every single person in the graduating class if they had goals and what those

goals were well what they discovered was that when they went back ten years later

and they asked you know and and followed up with this class that the people that

wrote down their goals and were specific about you know where they wanted to be

what they wanted to do and knew where they were going they basically set the

sail on a ship so to speak well that 5% of people that wrote down

their goals did vastly better compared to the rest of the ninety five percent

so writing down your goals I mean granite that's just one study but it

goes across the board it makes a huge difference

so does a practice like I'm about to show you but like I said I'm a big

proponent of writing down your goals you know I have have short term goals you

know weekly goals daily goals have midterm goals you know maybe for the

year and you know maybe have a decade goal where do you where do you see

yourself in a couple years where do you see yourself in a decade because another

quote and I'm big on the quotes guys is that you know they say you know people

underestimate or overestimate what they can do in a year but they underestimate

what they can do in a decade so keep that in mind let's just jump right in

really fast and you might think the stupid or it's you know lame or whatever

and I could totally understand why somebody might think that way but try

this I promise you if you try this and I dare you to try this you know this will

change your life and won't work overnight necessarily but it's that same

power of attraction that Law of Attraction you're gonna think these

things you're gonna realize them and you will start moving towards them I promise

you you need emotional emotional compelling emotionally compelling

reasons to do what you do you know drive behind that so obviously this is

materialistic this is the first thing on my slide anak should keep this in slide

just to kind of show you really fast this is my PowerPoint slide and I have a

bunch of different things like this but I just put this one together really fast

to kind of demonstrate the example of what I'm trying to show you so this is

obviously the cup my future car of my dreams I've always wanted this car it's

a McLaren mp4-12c 12c it's it's really really cool like the back pops up and

everything you know a lot of people on YouTube have Lambos you know they're

showing off their Lambos I've always wanted McLaren mp4-12c I don't know why

I just really really really like the way it looks I will have this I promise you

it might not be when the next six months it might not be within a year but

eventually I'm not sure when that will be maybe it is in the next six months I

will have this car I'm sure of it so the next thing that I want to talk about and

just I want to preface this by saying that it doesn't all have to be

materialistic but obviously if the emotion behind the materialistic thing

drives you enough then that's that that's fine a lot of people have this

like there's a stigma where like you're you're bad or you're selfish if you want

materialistic things it's not necessarily bad if it motivates you to

do the right things and help the right people and actually make a difference in

the world so something to keep in mind don't ever let anybody tell you that

it's you know you're selfish if you want material of things that's not the case

always okay there definitely some cases where that's the truth but you know if

you're doing it for the right reasons okay don't want things for yourself

excuse me next is this cheap it's an SRT I wanted to buy this basically for my

sister because she's always wanted it she doesn't she just got a new car but

she's always wanted to Jeep for some reason and it just this is a really

emotionally compelling my little sister was there for me in the time where I

really needed somebody you know as where my parents Bette you know back couple

years ago we all face different things but you know that was a it was a trying

time in my life basically and so I really wanted to help pay her back you

know and buy her the car of her dreams same thing goes with this my dad always

you know he talks about Tesla's he's always wanted to Tesla and my dad's a

software engineer he's a really really bright guy but he he works the nine to

five grind you know he he makes good money obviously for our family

you know especially when we were growing up and everything but you know he never

got to experience the prosperity that he really deserved because he worked a

nine-to-five and while he makes a lot of money he absolutely hates his job and so

I think that this would be a great way for me to pay him back by buying him the

car of his dreams and I will do both of these things I promise you this next

thing is just my house this is my earth sorry this is my parents house the house

I'm gonna buy my parent oh wait no no sorry I apologize again this is my house

in Florida because I've always wanted a house down in Florida

this is the back of the house in Florida you kind of just get the picture you can

kind of use these examples as things that you can kind of set up on your

PowerPoint to motivate you and what you should do ever not maybe not every

single day but you know when you're feeling down when you need motivation

look at these things and it will help Drive you will help you know stir that

passion back up because a lot of times you know I heard grant cardone say

recently you know if you're not willing to do X and fill that in with whatever

you want it whatever word you want if you're not willing to do blank then you

don't want the money enough then you don't want it bad enough then your dream

isn't as important to you and so when I get in those trying times

you know I search for those times where you know I'm a lot of other people will

quit because I know that you know if I can keep going in those times then I'm

gonna make a difference in the long run and you know powerpoints like this

helped me do that so try this I'm telling you it's gonna it's gonna make a

difference and then basically this is just another house that I wanted this is

my Australia house pretty much just go through the process with you obviously

will skip this is the same thing this represents the body that I've wanted

it's about progression because you know success happiness life is all

progression I'm big in fitness I feel like I have a pretty good body but you

know obviously I don't look like this dude I always wanted to travel so well I

always wanted to travel so kind of Jay Alvarez has a great YouTube channel

dudes dudes a legend check that out if you if you haven't already this

represents the same thing this is my home gym in my one of my future mansions

Christian guzmán big hero of mine guy started from nothing and is you know

just killing it nowadays he owns his own gym which is something I wanted to do

this is what this represents and I will do that eventually then moving on this

is like the study in my future you know mansion I love a quiet place

where I can sit and I can read and you know sip whiskey cuz I like

skee so just you know and this is the house that I want to go that I want to

buy for my parents later when they retire I think that'd be really really

cool I'm actually one thing I forgot to that really emotionally compels me is

where is it in SEC oh right here this is Honolulu Hawaii I've been in Honolulu

quadric Honolulu quite a few times my parents have always you know basically

took us when we were younger and obviously now you know I'm on my own and

stuff like that but when I was younger my parents took my whole family to

Honolulu and I've always kind of wanted to take them back there because it costs

a lot to fly out to Honolulu and Hawaii it's a beautiful place I had family that

lived out there for a while and eventually I will have enough money

where I'm set and you know I have some cash flow where I can take my parents to

Hawaii and pay for their entire trip so that this is these are the things ideas

that you can get that will emotionally compel you you know to follow your

dreams chase your dreams go that extra mile you know put that extra set up send

that extra email make that extra sales call whatever it is you can take this

example and apply it to your life and it might sound lame and you might be like

oh that's stupid you know for this reason or that reason and if you want to

think that that's totally fine then maybe this isn't the video for you and

that's totally cool but I'm telling you try this you know see if it doesn't make

an impact on you just it just feels good to kind of put these things down on

paper so to speak or on a PowerPoint and kind of realize them because it's like

said it you know like I said setting the sail of the ship you know the same wind

blows us on all of us they like to say and you know if you set that sail and

you know where you're going you know your targets you're you're much more

likely to get there okay so hope that this helps you guys I kind of want to do

a motivation you know slide non-emotional motivational slide

motivational video for you guys kind of teach you how to motivate yourself not

just for this week but for the rest of your life and granted these can change

and yours might be different but figure out and ask yourself sit down and ask

yourself where do you want to be a year from now where do you want to be three

years from now where do you see yourself in a decade and what things do you

actually want out of life you know not just the things that you want but who do

you want to be go deeper into it could take you really

think about it in depth this will really set your sail and really kind of let you

know the direction that you want to go and I guarantee you it will make a huge

difference on where you end up you know in the years to come so I really hope

that you guys like this video I'd love to hear from you you know put down in

the comments section what drives you what do you like you know do you like

the things on my on my thing do you think this is stupid you know I'd love

to hear some feedback what what drives you if you could have one thing in the

world tomorrow anything in the world anything use your

imagination what would that be okay guys so I hope you like this please like it

comment and subscribe it really helps the channel grow and I will see you guys

tomorrow

Riddle Me This - Jack Marshall Can't Do This - Webseries - Episode 16 - Duration: 4:04.

Well, my toys arrived.

Isn't it so tiny? The installation is so easy.

Like so easy, that I'm terrified they might be everywhere already.

Doesn't anyone trust anyone anymore?

So my only concern is that the cleaning crew is gonna find this and report back to House.

It's a risk I'm willing to take. Let's hope it's not a very thorough operation.

Or maybe I just have to start waking up earlier to run interference.

Mr. Marshall, I just read the most interesting essay on the history of rice farming.

And I have removed 364 spots on one cup.

Says here your bed's broken. Mind if I watch you sleep?

I can access this footage any time from my phone and my laptop.

I've also installed a server that has 24-hour backup,

so I can just thumb through all the footage and look for any unwelcome guests.

What's up, little guy?

"Alone she drew back an arrow and..."

What is this, a riddle?

Sorry, probably shouldn't put this out there until I figure out what this is.

I'm sure it's nothing.

If it's nothing, I'll post it so you can see it.

But I really should check this out first.

I'm gonna finish installing these cameras. Just a few more.

Well, I did finish my little project but it's come to violence.

I was just looking around and,

where did you find me, House?

At the bottom of the cellar stairs flat on your back.

Flat on my back.

You didn't see anyone?

No, House, for the last time, I was blindsided.

I don't know who it was. Could have been you for all I know.

It wasn't me, sir.

Maybe it wasn't. But why were you in the cellar? Why are you always in the cellar?

Many of the house decorations are in the cellar, as is the pantry Mr. Morgan built last year.

House, does it bother you that someone else has access to this house?

It is distressing, Mr. Marshall.

No, what's distressing is that I seem to be the only one that encounters this person.

I understand.

Was it you, House?

Mr. Marsh - -

Was it you?

No.

I want the locks changed.

Of course.

And I want the blueprints to this house.

May I ask what's going on?

Uh, no, you may not.

Very well.

It's all fun and games till someone gets whacked in the back of the head.

I did, however, finish installing the cameras before I got hit,

so I think our surveillance is a secret.

That's good because I need to learn all I can before my cards hit the table.

Oh, it's on now.

It's clean, House. I cleaned it, okay?

Get another hobby.

Why Do We Get Grades in School? - Duration: 8:13.

We all remember the dreaded end of semester Armageddon known as "report card day."

But why do we get letter grades in school at all?

So getting grades is a big part of the way we view education with A's equaling success

while F's represent the dreaded failure.

Students are taught early on that to get ahead in life, and be smart and successful, the

best foundation is getting perfect report cards in school.

Grades can help us get into advanced courses and competitive colleges, and certain exams

can grant us licenses to practice different trades and professions.

But outside of the nagging question about why we skipped over the E grade, have you

ever wondered: When were the first grades given and why?

Well if you want to blame someone, it appears that the first grades date back to Yale president

Ezra Stiles in 1785.

He wrote in his diary that there were 58 students present at his examination and that their

grades were "Twenty Optimi, sixteen second Optimi, 12 Inferiores (Boni), ten Pejores."

These are usually noted as the first college grades ever assigned.

In Yale's 1813-1839 "Record of Examinations" students' averages were noted in the book

by the Senior Tutor of the Class on a scale of 4, which may be responsible for the 4.0

scale commonly used today.

In 1817 the faculty reports from William and Mary College groups students into 4 categories

"No 1 the first in their respective classes, No 2 Orderly, correct, and attentive, No.

3 They have made very little improvement, No. 4 They have learnt little or nothing."

Ouch.

That's a major teacher burn.

But the four point scale wasn't really standardized throughout the 19th century.

Harvard tried a 100 point scale and a 20 point scale.

Yale later tried a 9 point scale.

So until 1850 it was normal for grades to vary in terms of number systems, and weight.

In US colleges professors used descriptive adjectives to assign value rather than relying

on the numbers alone.

But by 1883 there is a report on a Harvard professor giving a student a "B" grade,

which is when letters got incorporated into the act.

In 1886 Harvard Faculty Records show that professors began grouping students into 5

classes based on performance.

Similar 5 point systems spread to places like Yale, and Mount Holyoke, the latter of which

adopted the first letter grade system in 1897.

But a failing grade was marked as an "E" and not an "F".

Over time the E was dropped and the standard system across US colleges became 5 points

all represented by letters A, through D, and F. But the meanings of grades and the systems

for recording them often shifted in the late nineteenth and early 20th centuries

Ok so we've established that if we want somewhere to point the finger of blame for

why we received stressful grades in school, and why a less than stellar score on a 6th

grade pop quiz gave me heart palpitations, we can start with a bunch of 19th century

college professors.

But the more important questions is: why are we still getting grades in school today?

Those guys are dead.

So they're useful for determining class ranking, they help teachers group students

into categories, and they can also be instrumental in whether or not you can enter into certain

jobs.

But because I'm sure a lot of us are still suffering from post report card induced stress,

we have to ask the most pressing questions: do grades really matter?

And are they actually effective tools for helping students learn?

Well the answer to the first question "do grades really matter" is kind of complex

and has to be broken down a bit to get to the heart of it.

Because it seems that the importance of your grades depends on the path you decide to take.

Although we're taught that grades are the strongest predictor of success in life, this

isn't uniformly true.

The issue with grades is that they consider averages, which gives you the most usual outcome

but not the full picture.

An average doesn't consider the outliers, but rather the collective information from

a certain group.

History is actually filled with successful people who didn't finish college or even

high school: Magic Johnson, Anna Wintour, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and Oprah Winfrey

to name a few, and none of these people did too shabbily in the life success department.

Also having perfect grades in high school doesn't always predict future game changers.

Karen Arnold of Boston University conducted a study in which she followed 81 high school

valedictorians and salutatorians.

She found that the majority of them continued being successful at school later in life.

95% earned college degrees with an average GPA of 3.6, 60% went to graduate school, 90%

are in professional jobs, and 40% are in the highest tiers of those jobs.

This is because a high GPA reflects skills like being prompt, working really hard, following

directions and being well rounded.

All important skills for high level careers.

But Arnold found that although most of her former high school valedictorians and salutatorians

were "strong occupational achievers" none had entered into roles she would consider

"visionary" because the grades we receive in school are designed to reward conformity

and following the rules, rather than creative thinking or specialization.

For example if you're really great at history (shout out to our audience members) but you

still want to be ranked number 1, you eventually will have to put that history textbook on

the back burner to study other subjects and earn the coveted "A" in every field.

Having a high GPA is usually indicative of being a generalist, not a specialist.

Arnold posits that most people who become ground breakers are actually rewarded for

creative thinking, a unique specialization, and a focus on an intellectual passion, things

that don't always get rewarded with grades.

As a result a lot of people who become successful later in life often struggle in school.

But a 2002 study at the University of Michigan still found that 80 percent of students based

their self-worth on how well they were doing in school and students with lower grades reported

having lower self-esteem and health.

So that brings us to the next question: do grades really help students learn?

Although grades have long been considered the standard approach in education, some experts

are turning away from letter based systems.

One of the biggest critics of the fixation on grades in schools is education expert Alfie

Kohn.

Kohn notes: "The research quite clearly shows that kids

who are graded – and have been encouraged to try to improve their grades – tend to

lose interest in the learning itself, avoid challenging tasks whenever possible (in order

to maximize the chance of getting an A), and think less deeply than kids who aren't graded…That's

why the best teachers and schools replace grades (and grade-like reports) with narrative

reports – qualitative accounts of student performance – or, better yet, conferences

with students and parents."

Teachers also report that grading is becoming increasingly stressful, as grade inflation

puts added pressure on them to deliver the grades that students want and parents expect.

Some educators are moving away from letter and number based grading to standards based

grading.

In 2013 Kentucky implemented a system where students received 2 report cards: one with

the traditional letter grades, and another with a individualized breakdown of what students

had learned and the students' progress in school.

Virginia's Fairfax County implemented a similar process in their elementary schools

in the 2012-2013 school year.

Parents reported finding the new system initially confusing, but ultimately more helpful in

assessing their child's growth and progress in school.

And classrooms around the world, including public schools, private schools, and educational

initiatives funded by nonprofits, are looking to incorporate new methods in the classroom

that place less emphasis on memorization and focus more on innovation and how students

can retain new knowledge.

So even though grades are the oldest way of doing things, they may not be the best for

measuring students' long term success.

So how does this all add up?

It seems grades do have some weight in determining student outcomes because we've based so

many systems around it, but this can vary a lot based on the individual.

While grades are extremely important in certain trajectories, like going to college, attending

graduate school, or entering into certain professions, they ultimately aren't the

only determining factor of success.

And although we've accepted them as the marker of a good student, a perfect GPA doesn't

always represent things like creativity, ingenuity, and intellectual passions.

Which is why more school systems and educators are looking for ways to measure student progress

outside of letters and percentages.

So what do you think?

Have any other theories about how grades became so entrenched in our education system?

Drop all your comments and questions down below (we swear we won't ask you to share

your old report cards) and we'll see you next week!

How do Vegans Celebrate Halloween? 🍬 - Duration: 8:21.

Alright, we've got A trick-or-treater.

(Merrick: Go, go, go. Go, hurry!

(Blaine: What the..)

What?

What is that?

(Intro Music)

Happy Halloween!

It is October 31st today and this is our first time celebrating Halloween as vegans

And one thing that I was concerned about is..

Not really concerned, but you know, one thing I've thought about is like, what do vegans

do for Halloween?

Because, ya know, trick-or-treating is so hyped up and a lot of the candy that you get while

trick-or-treating is...

Chocolate. It has milk, egg, gelatin.

All the stuff that we don't eat.

I'm gonna show you what we are doing this year and the kids are definitely gonna get

their fill of junk food and candy.

Their gonna dress up.

We're gonna have a good day and we're gonna do it free of animal products.

So, come along with us and I'll show you what we do.

We have all been costumed up.

Can you tell what I am?

The boys don't know what I am, so apparently this is for an old generation.

I'm Where's Waldo, hello.

I'm gonna have to get the some Where's Waldo books.

We have a devil.

(laughing) Raya!

You're a little devil!

And Captain America.

Keyword "Merrick".

His name is in Captain A"meric"a, so that's why he got that.

We have the..

What are you?

Green Arrow or Robin Hood?

(Josh: Robin Hood) Well you said you were gonna pretend to be Green Arrow.

I said we can if we want to.

Ok, ok, so we have Robin Hood, which Raya is scared of his hoodie but she's getting

use to it.

Looking pretty cool.

And we have one more.

*Gasp* Woah!

Hey Spidey! (laughing)

But he's in his lazy form.

He's in his lazy form?

Look at her little wings.

(laughing) She doesn't like it when Keira is in her kennel.

But keira's in her kennel because of all the trick-or-treaters.

She just doesn't know how to act.

Ok I'm in my bedroom right now.

Wait, can you see a glare, the screen on my glasses?

Let me get rid of that.

There we go.

Ok.

I got, um, surprises for the boys.

I'm in my bedroom right now, but they might be able to hear me.

Here's what I got them.

It's little cauldrons.

Witch cauldrons full of goodies.

So I'm thinking that Josh can like ring the doorbell like he's a trick-or-treater but

leave the cauldrons of candy there.

So it'll be like a trick, and then he'll run away and the boys will open the door thinking

they're giving out candy but they will find candy instead.

(laughing)

Ok, there we go.

We're so sneaky.

We went out the window.

Alright, we've got a trick or treater.

(Merrick: Go, go, go. Go, hurry.)

(Blaine: What the..)

What?

What is that?

There's no one here.

Is this a trick?

Josh, where are you?

What?

I guess you should take the loot.

Ok, I guess I'll take this one.

Maybe the trick or treaters are hiding from us.

It's a surprise you were doing, weren't you?

Trick or treaters are hiding from us.

What?

(laughing)

You got tricked on Halloween.

Raya.

She's like, who's out there?

Ok, what's in there?

I bet this is a joke.

Some soda.

Soda, whaaat?

Pringles.

A huge bag of M&M's.

That's not M&M's.

Skittles!

(Merrick: I'm glad we stole that kid's candy.)

Chips?

Wait a minute, wait a minute.

I saw this in the kitchen.

(Jinx: Oreos??)

(Blaine: There's so many of these.)

What's that?

Uhh.

Fruit Roll Ups.

Ooooh, cool.

Bunches of stuffs for me.

I like whoever dropped this off.

(Raya whining) Here!

Look!

A fish!

It's a fish! (laughing)

No Halloween is complete without chocolate, so we have pumpkin chocolates.

I don't know if you can see that.

I made these.

These are, we've got reeses.

Everyone needs to taste one, here.

Taste a reeses.

Taste a reeses.

And then we have some that just have almonds.

And I made some Halloween cupcakes.

Alright, we are making our own chocolate bars because obviously we didn't buy chocolate

bars and the boys had no chocolate in their cauldrons.

Some really cool chocolate bar molds.

You're gonna have to put more chocolate in there than that.

The boys each have their own bowl of chocolate and then we have the goodies.

We have peanut butter with powdered sugar, peanuts (salted peanuts), almonds, and coconut.

I ordered some marshmallows and they were suppose to get here today, but they didn't

get here today.

They're gonna get here tomorrow, so we don't have marshmallows.

That's super sad but oh well.

I forgot we also have wafers.

Blaine has a wafer in there.

Did you put a wafer in yours?

I'm about to.

Oooh man.

Yummy.

Candy bars.

They're like, really big candy bars.

I've been informed that the neighbors are giving out chips, so we're gonna go trick

or treating at the neighbor's house.

Alright, to the neighbor's house we go.

Here's our ghosts.

And our pumpkins are set out.

Ok, lets go.

(knocking)

Trick or treat!

Alright Merrick.

How does it compare: Trick-or-treating vs. giving out candy?

I don't know.

I guess it'd be, like, 50/50.

Your enjoyment of it is 50/50?

Getting the candy is exciting, really exciting, but giving out the candy just feels like really,

like..

You're really glad that you gave out the candy.

So you feel good for giving?

Mhmm.

How do you think your first vegan Halloween was?

Fun.

Was it a success?

But we're not done with it.

We've still got the games and stuff.

Oh yea yea yea.

We're gonna play some games.

The games will make me excited, so then my bar will go...

We're gonna turn all the lights off in the house and we're gonna play haunted house.

We're gonna like run through the house and scare each other but I don't know if I can

record that because, like I said the lights will be off and it'll be pretty dark.

But, it'll be fun.

So that's another thing.

Activities make Halloween fun!

(Boo!)

What was that?

(Boo!)

*Gasp* I don't see anything there.

I'm scared.

(OOOOOH) *Crying*

Alright, Foxie's in here in the laundry room.

The goal of the game is to sneak through the house and get Foxie without being caught by

whoever's "it".

I smell little kids.

(growling)

(yelling, laughing, and snarling)

We couldn't play the game very long because

all the lights were off and Raya was getting scared and she wanted me to hold her and it

just didn't work out good.

But we played a couple of rounds.

I guess I'm gonna go ahead and end the video here because for the rest of the night we're

just gonna pig out on candy and I'm gonna put Raya to sleep and....

(Raya shouting)

Josh just went outside.

She's like "Heeeeey!!!"

But we're gonna watch a scary movie.

I think we're gonna watch "It", which Blaine suggested and that's crazy because Blaine

is not the one that likes scary movies.

Merrick is.

But we're gonna get creeped out.

So, what?

Like litterally, it's It.

(Jinx: It?

Yea.

We're gonna watch it?)

We're watching it.

(laughing) But yea, we're gonna..

I'm gonna put her to bed and do all the stuff we said.

So thanks for watching.

See ya.

How do I - Working With Images - Duration: 10:55.

In this short video I'll explain the ideas behind device densities and images in a mobile

phone environment.

In this environment the differences between device screens are big.

Lets start with a simple question, on the left you see an iPhone 6 and on the right

you see an iPad Air 2.

Both are not to scale but I'll ask the abstract question: "which device is bigger?"

In terms of resolution the iPad is clearly bigger.

It has more pixels than the iPhone 6.

The iphone has 1 million pixels and the ipads has 3 million pixels.

Thats a 3 fold difference!

The ipad is also much bigger than the iphone nearly twice the size diagonally.

This might seem to seal the deal, the ipad seems bigger.

However, it's the exact opposite!

In reality the iphone is arguably bigger.

It has more pixels per inch or PPI than the ipad simply because the pixels are more densely

packed together.

So for every inch of iphone you get more pixels.

This means that in order to show an image on the iphone we'll need 50% more pixels…

This difference is even further highlighted when comparing newer devices to older devices

as densities keep rising.

To repeat the point, this means that if you load an image in an iphone and show the exact

same image on an ipad this image will look much smaller on the iphone almost 50% smaller!

This might not sound like a big deal but keep in mind that these are touch oriented devices

so if an image is an icon that you are meant to tap on.

This icon might be too small for your finger in a high PPI device.

This difference gets freakishly comical in some situations, I still have a second generation

ipad and that's a 132 ppi device a newer pixel device which isn't the highest density

device available is 538 ppi.

Making an app that adapts properly to both of these requires good understanding of the

tools at hand…

As developers resolution is something that's instantly obvious but density isn't.

However, on mobile because of the touch interface it's crucial that we adapt properly to the

device density.

It's also important that we use it effectively.

Many developers expect iPads to just use bigger pictures but that would create a tablet interface

that just feels like a scaled up phone application.

This is a bad user experience.

Users expect the touch interface to adapt to higher PPI devices to make use of the extra

space for more content

To drive the point home here is the kitchen sink demo on a phone and an ipad.

Notice that the iPad UI adapts to make the most use of available screen real-estate rather

than just scaling up the phone UI.

In fact we chose to use slightly smaller images in the tablet mode so we can fit in more data.

One of the most important things we need to do to adapt to high resolution UI's is scale

the images.

To understand the problems and benefits we first need to understand that there are 2

types of images.

Vector and raster.

Vector images are stored as a set of low level drawing commands.

This means that when we scale a vector it's still perfectly smooth as the lines are redrawn

in the new resolution.

FontImage and the material design icon fonts we have builtin are types of vector images

and you should use them when possible.

We also have some basic support for an SVG transcoder although at this time this is a

bit new.

SVG is the standard for vector graphics.

However, most graphic resources aren't in vector format and are just stored as a set

of colors for pixels.

The common formats that you use every day such as JPEG, GIF & PNG are all raster images.

Since rasters are just a set of pixels scaling them without quality degradation is a problem.

There will always be some loss of quality but doing the scaling on the device will be

nearly impossible.

So the common solution which exists natively in all mobile OS's is to ship the app with

ready made scaled rasters to all the resolutions you need.

Our solution for this is multi-image.

We support automatic scaling on the fly of multi images which means you don't need

to maintain 5-10 versions of the same image.

You can just have one high quality version of the image and we will generate the rest

for you using a high quality scaling algorithm on the desktop.

Before we get into that I'd like to introduce the concept of densities in Codename One.

Codename One defines these density constants that match past and future devices.

One of the cool and unexpected surprises with density is that HD TV is a very low density

device and even 4k TV sits at medium or low density.

That sounds odd until you realize that a TV is typically huge and you sit relatively far

from it.

You can't distinguish pixels in the same level as you could on a phone.

Other than that notice that we have many densities ranging from low to 4K.

Some of them don't have devices targeting them yet and might not be required.

Also notice that density is an estimate here, devices are notoriously bad at these things

so the numbers might fluctuate slightly.

Lets move on and add a multi image in the Codename One Designer using the quick add

multi image option.

I'll pick our standard icon which is a 512 by 512 image.

Here I'm faced with an option to select the source resolution.

The source resolution is the density from the previous list to which the image was built.

So if the resource image I'm importing was designed for a very high density I should

pick that.

In this case the image is just a random image I'm using so I'll pick 560.

However, if I'd have picked a lower DPI all of the resulting images would have been

bigger.

If I'd have picked a higher DPI all the resulting images would have been smaller.

You will notice all the images are now automatically created and sized.

We can toggle between them and see the size difference and we can use the standard features

of the designer tool such as opening them in an external editor etc.

The add multi images as opposed to the quick add we used before is a manual approach for

adding multi images.

We don't use it as much but if you want more fine grain control over scaling you can

use this.

You can literally determine the size in pixels of every scaled instance where 0 means an

instance will not be generated.

You can select the option to preserve aspect ratio which makes sure the image will scale

without distortion.

You can also use percentage to scale the image uniformly with a single number.

You can use the square image to indicate that the width/height should remain square in which

point it will force the values to remain the same.

Once this is done you can inspect the resulting images and manipulate them just like we could

before in the quick add mode.

In both cases you can load the image from code by using getImage on the theme resources

object.

Notice you can create additional resource files and work with those files as well and

also download resource files dynamically.

Another important aspect of this is that multi image is seamless.

It acts just like any other image…

When you read the resource file the resolutions that you don't need are discarded and you

don't pay for the multi image in runtime.

There is a cost in application size so it isn't completely free though.

Thanks for watching, I hope you found this helpful

Stop Complaining And Do Something About It - Study Motivation - Duration: 10:13.

let's chat a little about complainers generally a complainer is a person who

doesn't take responsibility for their own action a complainer is someone who'd

always talk about why they failed instead of how to succeed

now there's one simple reason why it's never ever okay to complain and that is

there's always someone that has it worse than you do let me give that a little

context so when I think about some of the things in my life that I'd want to

complain about some of the really hard things and then I give them any sort of

real world context they aren't that consequential let me get really specific

when I was 16 years old and I had to drop out of high school to get a

terrible job to support my new baby that's pretty rough you know that is a

big enough excuse for me to justify any actions I take in my life I know but I

couldn't do this because to embrace that as an excuse to complain but the truth

is that's not so bad dropping out of high school like really

not having much of a place to live having no money having a baby being on

welfare like all those things really sucked but in the grand scheme of

humanity it's not that bad bear with me I turn on my computer I go

to a news site and the first story I read is about migrants from Myanmar that

are stuck on a boat stranded because the Thai government won't let them in to

port these are people just like you and me and they're literally starving to

death and this is right now I don't mean to be so extreme but these are the

things that I remind myself of any time I want to complain or bitch about

something in my life you realize that there are people just like you and me

who at this very moment are truly facing things we are lucky enough to go our

entire lives without ever having to experience okay let me tell

let me tell one more story to back this up one more story where like my feelings

around complaining and life in general were really set straight three years ago

I did this project led like a very small relief mission to the

Philippines after they had been devastated by Typhoon Haiyan this is

some of the video here that's somebody's home

people didn't have water people didn't have food you know these people

had nothing

their livelihood their life their existence had totally been stripped away

from them

and what struck me the most about the entire experience all of my time there

was not once did anyone complain but they'd lost everything and they didn't

complain and they all focused on one thing they focused on change not

complaining and because that I do take it personally when people complain

because the truth is most of the time people who complain have nothing to

complain about who cares if I went to a meeting that

doesn't start till tomorrow and who cares if some guy locked up a bike brake

cable it really doesn't matter

if it's broken fix it if you don't like it change it and if you want something take

it don't complain about it just do something about it one of the people I look

up to most in the world maybe the person I look up to most in world tied with my

dad I know dad you might watch this is my mother and hands down and I mean hands

down the thing that I find most intriguing about my mom and probably one

of the things that I'm most happy that she's passed on to me is her inability

almost to complain I find it extremely attractive I would tell you that I adore

my wife for that reason as a matter of fact Xander is whining too much and he's

only two and I find it unattractive I'm very against complaining I'm very

put your head down I'm very don't you realize you're

healthy like to me the only thing you should complain about is the unfortunate

unluck of of health you know somebody dying that you love in a car accident or

you becoming terminally ill after that it feels controllable and so I I really

dislike complaining I try to I talk a lot about honey over vinegar it's an

analogy I use a lot here at Vayner Media I thrive on positivity and so the way I

deal with complaining is I try not to do it I try to educate and empower people

the lack of it's it's the lack of its value

I guess I mean I I don't have a gear there you know when you go in my gear

like there is no like oh let me go into complain zone to me it's assess

figure it out and go directly back on the offense I'm a very offensive player

complaining is the defense often times people will come to me for advice on

fitness on building their businesses and their relationships whatever the case

may be and often the place that they're dropping the ball is in bad habits or

not building productive habits because it's very difficult to just get up and

change your life just change the way you do things people like to say that all

the time hey just stop doing this or start doing that they like to give

advice but the the underlying factors that our friend our individual whoever

is asking the question is not disciplined enough to actually put that

thing into action get that thing done so the thing that I have always told my

students and my clients is to start with a small win begin with something small

so for example if you want to lose weight I often tell people just start

walking every single morning don't worry about counting calories don't worry

about complex workout ideas don't worry about anything that anyone is selling

you just get up and walk every morning right now it's not the walking that's

actually gonna make that person successful now it will add to your

success because getting up and walking fresh air and exercise it's going to

support you in losing weight but we all know that there's far more factors to

consider but what it will do is create the virtue of discipline commitment

right commitment and discipline sort of go together and the fact that that small

win associated with getting up every single morning is under your belt you're

going to feel the courage the confidence and you'll have the ability to begin

adding other things to your ability to grow stronger so now that you know it's been

sixty days ninety days and it's like you got that pattern down pat you get up

every morning you just want that's it you don't think about it it's become a

habit you now can use that tool of creating habits and instilling

discipline with the next one which should be a little bit more advanced

perhaps only drink water with your meals don't drink any soda don't drink any

juice just drink water that's the next one and then the next one becomes more

complex and the next one becomes more complex now it might seem like this is

tedious and slow but I guarantee you that after 90 days of tiny wins and the

revamping of your character you will be the type of person that can get anything

done at any time and the longtime perspective is going to be a successful

one for you start small have big wins with these little things and then use

that new version of yourself that new character tool to attack bigger and more

advanced things until you reach your goal probably that's maybe the sweetest

word to a kid friends as we get a little older and we have our friends they

become very close to us and and sometimes they become almost

all-consuming they are everything to us I can remember as a parent as my

children got to a certain age and where they look to me for influence I can

remember very well when I saw them beginning to go to their friends and

that's where their influence began and that's where their influence began to

increase as a parent that got a little scary for me because I could I could see

I was having a little less influence and the friends were having a little

bit more well my parents were very wise my parents understood that who my

friends were would determine who I was going to become

birds of a feather flock together and in their wisdom they decided that they

wanted to know my friends and they wanted to see my friends so therefore

they provided a lot of wonderful things at our home so we would have our friends

at our house so that my parents could observe and watch the kind of kids I ran

around with what I learned is of a kid growing up is very simple there are some

friends that were positive for me and there were some friends that were

negative for me and my determination of which friends I was going to let

influence me basically determined whether I was going to have a positive

or a negative life fortunately because of good parental advice and guidance

I chose good friends which really did make a difference because you see

friends are wonderful they give us support they give us strength they're

either though a real asset or real liability so I would just want to

encourage you choose your friends wisely you don't need a lot but you need some

good ones give yourself a reward of some kind for practicing the new behavior

each time you reward yourself you reinform and we'll reinforce that behavior soon

you begin to associate at an unconscious level the pleasure of the reward with

the behavior you set up your own forcefield of positive consequences that

you unconsciously look forward to as a result in engaging in that behavior or

habit that you've decided upon
