Finding God's Strength (2/2) | TV Broadcast - Duration: 28:30.

Today on Answers with Bayless Conley:

And the idea is if you will wait on God, all of those little things that are harassing

you, and troubling your mind, and squawking at you, and distracting you, you will rise

above those things, friend, in the strength of God.

His strength comes, as we wait.

The joy of the Lord is your strength.

The joy of the Lord is your strength.

The joy of the Lord is your strength, but we must choose to rejoice.

There are many questions you are faced with every day.

We are all searching for answers that will make a real difference in our lives.

It's hard to imagine that these answers might be right in front of us.

Get ready to discover answers in the Bible with Bayless Conley.

Hi, I'm Bayless Conley.

Welcome to the broadcast today.

We're actually getting into the second part of a message about finding strength in time

of weakness.

But hey, the message will be complete in and of itself if you weren't with us last time.

We are going to be looking at several ways that the Scriptures tell us that we can lay

hold of God's strength.

We all go through seasons of weakness and we need to be made strong.

So hey, let's get into the Word and find some answers on how to get God's strength.

Woman's VO: Here's Bayless Conley with part two of his continuing message from last

week.

Look with me if you would at what the Lord says to him, beginning in verse 6.

Joshua chapter 1.

Be strong.

Everyone say, be strong).

Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance

the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law

which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left,

that you may prosper wherever you go.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day

and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it.

For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Have I not commanded you?

Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is

with you wherever you go."

Three times, he said, "Be strong," and we cannot separate that from God's instructions.

Joshua, this book of the law, My Word shall not depart out of your mouth, but you have

to meditate in it day and night.

That word meditate means to reflect upon.

It means to turn over and over in your mind, but the Hebrew word translated meditate here

actually is more than that.

It literally carries with it the thought of muttering or murmuring to yourself over and

over and over.

God said, "Joshua, don't let the Word depart from your mouth, but you need to speak it

as you reflect upon it, as you think about it, read it, and recite it to yourself.

Speak it over, and over, and over, and over, and over."

Then you'll make your way prosperous.

Then you will have good success.

You see, God's Word is supernatural.

Jesus said His words are spirit and life.

The apostle Paul said this Book is God-breathed, and God's strength comes to us as we read,

and as we reflect.

I think some of us, when we get to heaven, we're going to realize we could have had so

much more, been used to such a greater degree, but we were divorced from having a love affair

with God's Word, and it cost us so dearly, and we won't know until we get into that glory

land.

I'm telling you, it is an amazing source of strength.

It's how faith comes into our lives.

Some of you, maybe like me growing up, you remember the old Popeye cartoons, and usually,

I think it was Bluto, Popeye's great nemesis, they'd be fighting, and Bluto would be beating

the heck out of him until Popeye ate what?

Spinach, and then all of a sudden he would get this strength, and he would win the day.

Friend, God's Word is your spinach.

If you feed on the Word of God, it will bring the strength of God to you.

We were with the family one year, taking a family vacation, and we'd actually rented

a house, had all the kids, all the grandkids together there.

First night, we're sitting around talking, and a mouse suddenly ran right through the

middle of us, and I thought, "That wasn't in the brochure."

A little while later, vroom, the mouse runs back across, and for a week, we battled that

mouse.

We couldn't catch it.

It was like "Mighty Mouse".

This little bionic mouse, and we tried, and it would run behind some stuff.

We'd go, "Got you," and we would move the stuff, and it wouldn't be there.

The mouse was so fast, and I was determined that before the week was up, we were going

to get that little guy.

We never, ever caught that mouse.

Every night, it's just almost like clockwork, when we would sit down, he would motor across

the floor right in front of us.

I thought about that mouse in comparison with another one I found once.

I was cleaning, actually clearing out a field for someone, and I found an old Coke bottle

under a bunch of brush and stuff that was out in the field, and I looked in the bottle,

and there was a mouse stuck down in the bottom of the bottle.

Apparently, there had been a little Coke in there.

However long, before someone had chucked it out there, the mouse had gotten down inside

because of the smell of the Coke and couldn't get out, and I felt so sorry for him.

I broke the bottle, and that little mouse just sat there, could barely even stand up.

The difference?

Our little bionic mouse in the vacation house had lots of food, but that mouse stuck in

the bottle had no food.

My friend, God's Word is food, and strength for your spirit.

God's strength will come to you as you feed upon the Word of God.

Once we have meditated and acted upon it, did you notice in verse 8, he said, "Look,

you know, don't let the Word depart from your mouth.

Meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do."

It's not just a matter of, okay, I'm going to fill up on the Word.

This is awesome.

No, we meditate, illumination comes, so that we can do, And once you've meditated on it,

once you've spent time in it, and then you've acted upon it, we come to our third step,

and that is, wait on God.

Wait patiently.

Wait hopefully.

Wait expectantly.

As we do, more divine strength will come our way.

Find another place with me, if you would, Isaiah chapter 40, and this chapter actually

opens up with prophecies about John the Baptist, and then there are prophecies about Jesus.

Then it moves on, and talks about God's mighty power over nations, and over the peoples of

the world, even over the created universe.

Then we come to verse 28 of Isaiah 40, and it asks the question,

Have you not known?

Have you not heard?

The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth,

Neither faints nor is weary.

His understanding is unsearchable.

He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might, He increases strength, all

right?

How does He do that?

Read on.

Verse 30.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall,

But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength;

They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary,

They shall walk and not faint.

Those who wait on the Lord will renew.

That word renew means to exchange.

They will exchange their weakness for His strength, and it means to wait expectantly,

looking for God to act.

Strength is imparted while we wait.

I love the fact that he talked about taking up wings like eagles.

That analogy he uses.

I spent a lot of time out on the water, and there's seagulls everywhere, and I have to

think sometimes seagulls have a brain about the size of a grain of sand.

They're so greedy, and you just watch them.

They fight one another over the tiniest scraps, and they just squawk, and they fight, and

they squawk, and they fight.

They follow pelicans around.

Pelicans are diving on a school of baitfish, and the moment that pelican hits the water,

there's like three or four seagulls on it to try and steal the fish right out of the

thing's beak.

All the times that I've seen that happen, there's one thing I've never seen.

On Catalina Island, there's at least two pairs of eagles living there that I know of, and

they have their perch high upon the cliffs of Catalina.

You can be anchored out in the little bay, and if you whistle, immediately the eagle

will look around.

You take a fish and throw it, eagle leaves his perch, comes around.

He'll grab that fish with his talons, and there's seagulls all around, and the seagulls

leave the eagles alone.

That eagle takes his fish up to his perch, sits up there, and eats it.

The picture of majesty.

The picture of strength.

The idea is if you will wait on God, all of those little things that are harassing you,

and troubling your mind, and squawking at you, and distracting you, you will rise above

those things, friend, in the strength of God.

His strength comes, as we wait.

So you've done what you know to do.

You've prayed the promise.

You've acted upon it to the best of your ability.

Now chill, and let God be God.

As you wait, He will strengthen you.

Listen to these verses.

Psalm 27, verses 13 and 14.

I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the Lord

In the land of the living.

Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage,

And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

G. Campbell Morgan made these statements about waiting on God.

He said, "Waiting for God is not laziness.

Waiting for God is not going to sleep.

Waiting for God is not the abandonment of effort.

Waiting for God means: First, activity under command.

Second, readiness for any new command that may come.

Third, the ability to do nothing until the command is given.

Years ago I had a friend that was being sued by a business partner, and it had really thrown

him for a loop.

He just didn't see it coming at all.

He'd never been sued before, and it turns out that a third party involved in the business

had actually manipulated things, set this whole thing up, and left this friend sort

of holding the bag.

He didn't see it coming.

Someone else had lied, and deceived, and caused this whole thing to happen.

Here he is, and he's pretty devastated.

First, if you've never been sued before, it's not fun.

First time he's ever been sued.

His character is being besmirched.

It's threatening to empty his bank account, as well as assassinate his character publicly.

Like I said, threw him for a loop, and he told me this is what he did.

He actually had a hammock out in the backyard.

He said, "Every night, after the family went to bed, I went out in that hammock for an

hour and I waited on God every night.

I prayed for a little while as I laid in the hammock, and I said, 'God, give me wisdom.

I'm just waiting on You.

Show me what to do.'

Wait for an hour.

Did it one night.

Did it two nights.

Did it three nights.

Did it four nights, just laying in the hammock, waiting on God, listening, praying a little

bit, listening more.

"Five nights.

Six nights.

On the seventh night," he said, "God gave me direction.

I knew what to do."

Sometime later, he met with the guy that was suing him.

It was the first time they'd actually even spoken since all this thing happened, so you've

got a battery of attorneys on each side.

They're sitting across a table, and the first thing he did, he says, "Listen, I just want

you to know I am so sorry that this happened.

I didn't see it coming.

We never wanted this to happen.

Will you please forgive me?"

He said the man almost broke down and began to weep.

Before it got any farther, he said, "Look, this is what I feel like I'm supposed to do

for you to make things right," and the guy said, "That's all I ever wanted.

I just wanted things to be right."

They shook hands, and the thing was done in 10 minutes.

He told me the attorneys on both sides were very upset.

They were getting paid by the hour, and they're thinking, this thing, okay, this is the initial

meeting, and we're going to hammer things out.

It's going to go to a second meeting, a third meeting, et cetera, et cetera, and man, it's

done, and the clock is no longer ticking.

So he said, "They were all upset."

He said, "I was elated," and one of the things that he related to me is just in the course

of waiting on God, this quietness, and confidence somehow took a hold of me, and I knew God

was going to take care of things, an unexplainable peace replaced the panic that I was feeling.

And it all came while he was waiting on God.

Friend, you will know God's strength if you will wait.

And then the final thing I want to share with you is: We must choose to rejoice.

We have to choose to rejoice.

I'm going to quote a verse to you, from Nehemiah the eighth chapter.

Nehemiah is actually reading the Scriptures to God's people.

They are so backslidden, they are so out of touch with God, they haven't heard the Word

of God in the longest time, and there are people that are helping them understand what

it means.

As Nehemiah and those assisting him bring understanding to the people about what God

requires, the people en masse begin to weep, realizing how badly they have missed it, and

how far away from God they have drifted.

In the midst of the people weeping, this is what Jeremiah says to them, or rather Nehemiah

says to them, in Nehemiah 8:10.

Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions

to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord.

Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."

The joy of the Lord is your strength.

The joy of the Lord is your strength.

The joy of the Lord is your strength, but we must choose to rejoice.

Will you look at one more portion of Scripture with me?

The book of Habakkuk.

I know that you read it all the time.

There's no pages stuck together in the book of Habakkuk in your Bible.

It's right near the end of the Old Testament.

Habakkuk.

We want to look at chapter 3.

Habakkuk chapter 3 and verse 17.

It says,

Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines;

Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food;

Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls—

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet,

And He will make me walk on my high hills.

Think about this.

This is written to people living in an agrarian society.

All of our sustenance, everything we look to meet our needs, to feed our families, it's

gone.

Devastation, emptiness.

Yet, I will rejoice in the worst of circumstances.

I will, I make a choice to rejoice because joy, my friend, is not dependent upon circumstances.

We can have joy regardless of what is going on, and generally, if we will really consider

things, there almost always is something we can rejoice about.

And if nothing else, rejoice that your names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

On your worst day, you're still headed to heaven, and when we do choose to rejoice,

God's strength comes.

The joy of the Lord is our strength.

Isaiah 64 and verse 5, it says, "God, You meet the one who rejoices."

God comes to the one who rejoices.

George Stormont was an old English preacher, used to come to Cottonwood quite often, and

George told me a story once about an Assembly of God pastor that he knew.

This man led his church for 23 years, and yet had never experienced the baptism in the

Holy Spirit.

He had pled with God for it.

He cried for it.

He prayed about it.

He preached it to his people because he saw it in the Scriptures, but he'd never experienced

it himself.

George said, "I was in a meeting and Howard Carter was there, and Howard Carter among

other things seemed to have had a gift in leading people in the baptism of the Holy

Spirit," and this pastor came to Brother Carter, and George said, and he had a bit of a whine

in his voice.

He says, "Brother Carter, I've been seeking the baptism in the Holy Spirit for 23 years,

and I've never been able to receive."

He said Howard Carter immediately looked at him and said, "And you're not going to get

it that way either."

And then He quoted Isaiah 64:5.

The Lord meets him that rejoices.

George said it was like a light went on in the man's face.

He says right there on the spot, he fell to his knees and repented to God for his unbelief,

and he began to rejoice, and he said within five minutes he had a mighty baptism in the

Spirit, and then I'll never forget what George told me.

He said, "Bayless, more was done in five minutes of rejoicing than in 23 years of begging,

and crying."

We choose to rejoice.

Number one, I can't, but God, You can.

Number two, get into His Word.

Number three, wait.

Wait on God.

Number four, choose to rejoice, and I'd like to tie it up by sharing a verse with you.

It's Romans 5:6, it says,

For when we were still without strength, in due time (or at the appointed time) Christ

died for the ungodly.

We had no strength to bring ourselves to God, no strength to rescue ourselves, no strength

to clean the filth and the dirt from our soul and from our spirit.

No strength to come.

When we had no strength, God sent His strength to us.

He sent His Son, Jesus Christ.

Born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and then He was crucified for the sin of the world.

He literally became the sin sacrifice for all that had gone wrong with the human race.

When we were without strength, at the appointed time, Christ died for the ungodly.

My friend, Jesus died for you, and I'm convinced that if you would have been the only one that

needed redemption, He would have just as readily gone to Calvary's tree and given up His life

to rescue you.

If you think about it, He did that knowing full well that we might reject His offer,

that we might not want salvation, and it's hard to imagine that, but there are people

in this world that are wholly given over to wickedness.

They love the darkness more than the light.

Their hearts are calloused and hardened, and they don't want anything to do with God, but

there are others that are in the valley of decision.

Others that are actually looking for answers, that are looking for the truth, and we're

supposed to pluck them out of the fire.

Friend, Jesus is reaching out to every person with an open heart here this morning, to every

person that's watching this.

Jesus is reaching out to you.

He loves you today.

I want to lead you in a simple prayer, want to lead those here in a simple prayer.

All I can do, though, all I can do, I can give you words to pray.

They mean nothing unless you put a sincere heart behind them, but if you'll mean business,

and speak the words to God from your heart, He'll meet you.

If it helps you to close your eyes when we pray, you can, but only if you want to.

Anybody watching us via live stream, or listening to us in any other format, why don't you pray

with me right now?

Maybe put a hand on your heart.

Let's pray it out loud.

Say,

Dear God.

I come to You right now.

I want to say thank You, thank You for loving me so much that You would send Your very own

Son to die on the cross for me.

Jesus, I believe that through Your death, the price has been paid for all of my sin.

I believe You've been raised from the dead, and I ask You now, come into my life, be my

Lord, be my Savior.

It's in Your name I pray, amen.

Stay tuned at the end of the program today for a special inspirational thought from Bayless.

You know, many times we hear things that impact us.

But because we don't take enough time to meditate on them, to think about them they

tend to escape us.

I know it's happened to me many times I'm sure it's happened to you.

If something stood out to you in the message today take a moment.

Maybe write the thought down.

Consider it.

Think about it.

Let it put roots down into your heart.

Make it a part of your life.

We'll see you next time.

And now here's Bayless with an inspirational thought you can apply today.

There is a profound story in First Samuel chapter 30 about David.

He's leading a band of men doing his best to accomplish the will of God and the bottom

falls out in his life.

His family, his wife, everyone's children, they are all taken into captivity.

The town they lived in was burned with fire.

David's men were talking about stoning him their grief was so deep.

And David himself as well as having to deal with his men that are talking about stoning

him to death has lost his family.

And the Scripture says that David strengthened himself in the Lord or David found strength

in God.

And whatever you're going through right now, if you need emotional strength, physical

strength, material strength, economic strength, God has strength for you and it can be laid

hold of.

He is a very present help in time of need.

And I just want to encourage you, reach out to God, be honest, make your request known.

We do serve the God that hears and answers requests.
