Decoding YouTube!
If you've been spending time on Youtube lately
you've probably run across this video or seen this thumbnail.
The story behind it:
Well-known Youtuber, Julien Bam,
seemingly broke down his expenses and revenue in one of his videos.
Something like that obviously immediately grabbed our attention.
So how much does he make?
With an average of 30 million views,
he makes:
Not exactly nothing, obviously.
And yet with such a massive reach, 30 million views,
that kind of pull should be pulling in more.
Our central question:
How can you amass such reach?
Someone who knows the answer is my neighbor.
Come with me!
Building reach on YouTube.
Howdy there, neighbor!
Christoph Burseg, founder of VeeScore,
you really are our neighbor here in the Schanze neighborhood.
You developed software that can be used to illuminate
to accurately analyze what goes on on YouTube,
who's growing and to understand what drove the growth.
So, how did Julien Bam get so big?
Thanks Philipp!
And thank you for the invitation and it's an honor to be
the first video and interview partner on the show here with you.
Julien Bam's most successfully videos are his music parodies.
For example, he parodied one of the most frequently clicked songs
"Everyday Saturday" by Apored.
Apored is by the way a reverse spelling of grandpa in German.
The idea of parodying music videos is not entire new.
In Germany, even Y-Titty, a first generation Youtuber,
parodied music videos in a humorous manner.
For example, Rhianna, Psy or Carley Rae Jepsen,
because there are tons of searches on YouTube for these songs.
In other words then, is the secret to amassing large reach on YouTube
making videos based on frequently searched keywords?
That is certainly a sound approach:
YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world.
And that doesn't just apply to song parodies.
Other YouTubers have focused on popular computer games.
Think Minecraft or other similarly successful channels like
Unge or Gronkh.
And beauty Youtubers, my dear Philipp,
have gained big followings with make-up and hair tutorials.
Are there alternatives to a keyword-oriented approach to amassing reach?
Generally speaking, there are two approaches
which you can loosely follow.
Do you want to focus on search traffic
or do you want to try your luck
landing a viral hit
or to generate traffic outside of YouTube?
Making something viral is obviously much harder
harder and then you also have to decide if you want to adopt a serious approach
or if you would be ok being somewhat unserious
Purely as a matter of professional interest:
what is considered unserious?
If you want to target less serious search traffic
you can look for reasons
to show naked people.
Think waxing, think body painting or massage videos,
they are hugely popular on YouTube.
Or you can upload illegal videos from TV shows.
In Germany, popular videos include ones from Bares für Rares.
or Berlin Tag und Nacht, which both generate millions of views.
There are also viral videos outside of those from the biggest channels
that are kind of odd like the donkeys from the Erfurt Zoo
or this 8 year old
who instead of doing his homework wants to play with this excavator.
If we wanted to
outside of OMR Briefing, this format here,
show that we could generate millions of views with a crazy idea,
what would be two or three ideas that we could pursue
to break a million views?
I did bring a couple ideas with me.
It's obviously not that easy.
Nine of ten videos don't go viral.
Or maybe even more.
Think about this.
(German grocer) Edeka is known for their viral videos.
On their channel, there are over 220 videos
and only 12 of them have more than 1 million views.
And only four have amassed over 10 million views.
Ok, well let's still try something out.
We don't have to make something viral,
but something search oriented.
I would like to try it out and see if we can net
a million views, here at OMR.
Ok.
When the camera is off, you can show me on that coordinate grid
where you want to be.
Then I will tell you a few ideas that could work.
Great, great.
Then I will take you at your word.
Let's do it like they do on TV:
we'll turn the camera off, we just created a little cliff hanger.
And we'll use Christoph's help and try to piece together a video
that generates a couple hundred thousand or a million views.
If need be, I can do a full body-hair removal. No problem.
Right? It'd be awesome.
Can't wait.
Ok, see you soon!
See you soon!
