Have you ever been in the middle of a conversation when you couldn't think
of the word you wanted to use?
You're searching and searching and trying to find the right word to express your thoughts.
Don't worry - it happens to all of us.
In a previous video, I encouraged you to "use your words" to
find another way to express your ideas.
Continuing to explain yourself helps you sound more fluent because you're not panicking when
you can't come up with the precise word.
After all, English isn't always a precise language.
We often use descriptions in order to express the idea that we mean.
But what if you substitute another word or find a more lengthy way to explain yourself,
but you still want to know the precise word or term you can use in order to
express this idea more effectively?
In most cases, the person that you're speaking with will supply or volunteer
the correct word that you want to use.
But what happens if they don't say the other word because they understand you and they
don't want to interrupt the flow of thoughts?
In that case, you want to ask the other person to give you the specific word you're missing.
This is a great way to improve your vocabulary because you're going to find out the precise
term a native speaker would use in this situation.
In this video, I'm going to share natural sounding questions that you can use in order
to invite the other person to share the precise word, term, phrase or expression you can use
in order to express yourself more accurately.
As we go through the examples, pay attention to your intonation.
In order to show curiosity, be sure to use rising intonation.
This encourages the other person to give you more details and shows you're truly interested
in hearing the best way to express yourself in English.
So let's talk about the questions.
I'll repeat each question three times.
Please repeat after me.
Is there a better way to say that?
Is there a better way to say that?
Is there a better way to say that?
Is there another way to say that?
Is there another way to say that?
Is there another way to say that?
Is there a better word for that?
Is there a better word for that?
Is there a better word for that?
What do you call that?
What do you call that?
What do you call that?
In most cases, native speakers wouldn't worry about not knowing the words, so they just
substitute "whatchamacallit," which is a quick, reduced way of saying, "What do you call that?"
Whatchamacallit?
I probably wouldn't suggest you say that, but it's helpful to understand it.
What should I say instead?
What should I say instead?
What should I say instead?
You could also include the term you used.
What should I say instead of that?
What should I say instead of that?
What should I say instead of that?
What's the word I'm trying to think of?
What's the word I'm trying to think of?
What's the word I'm trying to think of?
What's the word for that?
What's the word for that?
What's the word for that?
This may actually be the question a native speaker is most likely to ask.
What's the word for that?
Simple, to the point.
Another variation is what's another word for that?
What's another word for that?
What's another word for that?
When you ask for another word, another way, you're inviting the other person to provide
more vocabulary for you.
They won't feel embarrassed about correcting you.
Most people are too polite to correct you if you say something wrong.
If you encourage the other person by saying you want to hear another way to say that or
another word to say that, they may get more enthusiastic and
start sharing the most precise terms.
As you can see, even if you are able to put your idea into other words and keep going,
even though you don't know the precise term, you may still want to improve your vocabulary
and sound a little more natural when choosing the correct word to express this idea.
In this case, you can use any one of these questions to invite the other person
to supply the word for you.
Don't be embarrassed about asking for the correct way to say something.
There are all kinds of terms I can't think of even as a native English speaker.
If it's not a word that's part of our active vocabulary, it may not come to mind that quickly.
It's perfectly acceptable to ask the other person to give you the correct term.
In fact, this is a technique I use in order to sound more like a native speaker
when I'm speaking Spanish.
For example, I spent years going to Starbucks in Lima, Peru and Santiago, Chile, and every
time I went to Starbucks I tried to find a way to express the type of tea I wanted.
And I didn't have the precise word because I know what it is in English, tea bag, but
I didn't know what it was in Spanish.
So I would find another way to express myself, but finally I just wanted to use the right
term, so I asked the barista how I should say it, and they told me.
Super easy!
I wish I had done it earlier so that I could trust I was saying the right word.
After watching this video, I hope you feel more confident knowing that you can invite
the other person to supply the correct word for you.
Sometimes native speakers just need a little more encouragement to correct you.
Nobody wants to be rude or make you feel like you can't speak English.
It's OK if you find another way to express your thoughts.
You don't always need the precise terms.
Just a quick reminder, if you want more guidance on how to improve your vocabulary naturally,
please be sure to check out my three workshops where I share all of my top tips to help you
sound more like a native English speaker.
If you're looking for a specific word, don't be afraid to comment below the video, express
the idea a different way, and encourage me to supply the word for you.
I'll be happy to help.
Once again, I'm Kim from englishwithkim.com.
I'm your guide to the essential communication skills you need to sound more natural in English.
If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up and share it with a friend.
Have a good one.

Tutor Nick P Lesson (215) Don't Use 'at Aged" Use at the Age of - Duration: 2:34.
Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is lesson 215. The title of today's lesson is don't use " at
aged' use " at the age of.' This is probably going to be more common with ESL students.
Where English is the second language . They are a little more likely to make this
mistake. Let's look at some examples where it would be wrong. At age 19 he
already graduated from university. No. That would be wrong. Of course with the
check, this would be correct. At the age of 19, he already graduated from
university. So remember we should be using at the age of not at aged. All
right let's look at the second one. The second example here. Men in the US can
retire at aged 65. Of course again with the X , this is wrong.
With the check this would be correct. Men in the US can retire at the age of 65.
That's the average one. I don't know maybe sometimes you get some early
retirement too. That's another story, but most people most men who probably
retire at the age of 65. All right. Let's look at the last one. At aged 35 you can run for
the presidency in the US. Of course again, with the X this is wrong. You should say
at the age of 35. you can run for the presidency in the US. Nobody that young
has actually become president yet. So I think the early 40s I think JFK was the
youngest when he ran. There might have been another question I think maybe
Teddy Roosevelt did he originally become president when somebody else died and I
think he was actually a little younger than Kennedy. I think Kennedy was the
earliest elected. That's usually the way it goes. Although, you do wonder about this age
of 35. If the original Constitution was written today, you wonder if they would
have made the age higher because at the time this was written, you know the
average life expectancy in the US was between the 40s and the 50s. Today we
live a lot longer so I don't know if they would want some if
the founding fathers were writing it again would they actually choose this
young an age. They might have actually chosen like probably at least 50 or
something if they were doing it today. But who knows ? This is what's on the
books. All right anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your
time. Bye-bye.

Warning For Teenage Lifters (Don't Make This Mistake) - Duration: 5:54.
What's up, guys?
Sean Nalewanyj at www.SeanNal.com with a quick video here today for the younger teen lifters
out there who watch my channel where I want to, basically, just give you a warning on
what I think is one of the biggest mistake you can make if you are trying to get a lean
and muscular body but you're still going through puberty.
So usually that's going to mean below the age of about eighteen.
And I think this is more important than ever right now with just how popular YouTube fitness
has become, Instagram and Facebook as well, where you constantly seeing images of guys
and girls with very lean physiques, ripped abs and at that younger age you might be a
bit more prone to being influence by that kind of stuff.
So I just wanted to make a quick video here addressing it.
So the one thing that I would suggest avoiding as younger lifter is trying to maintain a
very low bodyfat percentage and, basically, trying to get shredded.
Now, I pretty much don't recommend that anybody try to get extremely lean and maintain
it year round since it's generally not healthy unless you're a genetic outlier or you're
on drugs, and it's not sustainable either.
It can be done for temporary periods, you know, if you're competing or if it's for
something like a photo shoot or some other event.
But as a long term strategy it's just not a good idea.
But this is especially true for teen bodybuilders or just for any younger guy or girl involve
in fitness, period.
Because trying to get very lean and maintain that over the longer term can actually have
the side effect of stunting your growth.
Now, just how significant this effect would be, obviously depends on how lean you're trying
to get, how low your calorie intake is, what your micronutrient intake is like, how young
you are, the effect could be small for some people and it could be larger for others.
But nonetheless, it's just not a risk worth taking.
If you're still going through puberty then keep in mind that your body is in a state
of growth and it needs the proper amount of calories and the proper nutrients to grow
to its full potential.
Not just physically but mentally as well.
So trying to maintain a large calorie deficit to get a ripped looking body, like maybe your
favorite Instagram fitness figure or a YouTuber, doing that could end up working against you
in the long run.
There's no evidence to show that weight training itself has any negative effects on growth,
assuming that you do it properly but consistently depriving yourself of proper nutrition potentially
could have that effect.
And that's why in under-developed countries where malnutrition is a problem that is exactly
what you tend to see.
And if you're trying to maintain a very low bodyfat that's essentially what you're doing,
you're basically starving your body of the calories and the nutrients that it needs for
optimal functioning.
No different than someone else who just doesn't have access to proper nutrition in the first
place.
And also if you are paying close attention to your micronutrient intake while you're
doing this then it's going to be an ever bigger problem.
Now, if you are overweight to begin with and you're in unhealthy bodyfat range then try
to get down to a healthy bodyfat range is a different scenario.
As long as you're eating a good micronutrient rich diet, plenty of foods and vegetables,
you're eating minimally process whole foods, you're getting enough protein and you're not
using an overly aggressive calorie deficit over a really long period of time, in that
case you should be fine.
Because your body can also use the calories in your stored bodyfat in order to fuel the
growth process.
But if you're already decently lean as is, so let's say you have twelve percent bodyfat,
you have good muscle definition, you can see your abs when you flex, and that's good
enough.
And I wouldn't suggest going any lower than that.
About twelve to fifty percent is a good range, I would say.
Don't use your younger teen years in order to get ripped.
You use it as a time to build a solid foundation of overall muscle size and strength.
Focus your teen years on growth and give your body the calories and nutrients that it needs
in order to do that.
You don't need to focus on every little detail and track exact macros.
Just get the fundamental done and focus on developing the right habits and developing
that longer term consistency that you're going to need.
Learn proper lifting form and technique.
Learn how to structure a proper program for yourself.
Make steady strength gains and develop good healthy nutritional habits.
I think getting into fitness at a young age is a really positive thing.
It'll teach you discipline.
It'll help you build more self confidence.
It'll teach you how to set goals and work towards them.
And that's also going to spill over and apply to other areas of your life as well
as you move forward.
So it's a positive thing that you're on this journey but it's important that you
go about it the right way.
So don't worry about all these super lean physique that you see online.
Nobody actually looks like that in the real world all the time unless they have extremely
good genetics or they're using drugs or they're just flat out unhealthy.
And most people, again, don't look like their pictures in the real life anyway.
It's unrealistic at your age to strive for that and it could be potentially dangerous
to your health as well.
As a teenager, again, don't focus on leanness, focus on growth.
You can still have impressive muscle definition but just don't go overboard with it.

Your Asthma and Allergies Aren't Causing Mental Illness - Duration: 5:48.
[ INTRO ]
Earlier this week, you might've noticed headlines about how having asthma or hay fever
can increase your risk of developing a mental illness.
But you don't have to worry and run off to your doctor.
These headlines are reporting on a study published this week in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
And if you take a closer look at that paper, the results aren't as clear — or dramatic
— as they might seem.
Your body is one giant interconnected system, so it makes sense that some diseases might
be related or have the same root cause.
Researchers have spent a lot of time looking into this idea, especially when it comes to
psychiatric disorders and allergies.
Allergies are when your immune system overreacts to something harmless, like animal dander,
and treats it like a threatening invader.
And some studies have suggested that the stress or inflammation from how our bodies fight
allergens could throw off brain chemistry.
Admittedly, the research is ongoing, and a lot of things are up for debate.
But if it's true, and if we understood how that connection worked, we could maybe prevent
some mental illnesses.
So far, studies have mostly focused on links between specific conditions — like schizophrenia
and being allergic to things like pollen.
What's special about this new paper is that it looked at the likelihood of someone with
certain allergies developing any psychiatric disorder.
Specifically, this team looked at patients who had three of the most common allergic
diseases: asthma; allergic rhinitis, which is sometimes called hay fever; and atopic
dermatitis, which is a kind of eczema.
Using a national database from Taiwan, the team collected 15 years of health data from
over 180,000 patients.
Almost 47,000 had these allergic diseases, and around 140,000 didn't.
Then, the team calculated how many people with allergies were /also/ diagnosed with
a psychiatric disorder over that decade and a half — something like anxiety or depression.
And the results were kind of surprising.
They found that almost 11% of those with allergies developed some kind of psychiatric disorder,
while only about 7% of the control group did.
In general, that meant the people with allergies were statistically about 1.66 times more likely
to develop a mental illness over that 15 years.
Now, just because these data suggest that these conditions might be related doesn't
mean that one causes the other, or that they definitely come as a pair.
For instance, the team also found that those who just had eczema, or who had hay fever
and eczema together, actually had a lower risk of developing psychiatric disorders than
the control group.
Also, the data from this study came from only one population, so it might not be representative
of everyone.
Besides, a risk factor of 1.66 really isn't that high, especially if you compare it to
the risks associated with things like genetics.
So it's not actually that alarming.
Not to mention, scientists still have to figure out the mechanisms that could link allergies
to mental illnesses — which this study didn't look at.
So if you get sniffly in the springtime, don't worry about your health any more than you
normally would.
On a much smaller scale, a team of researchers announced on Monday in the journal Nature
Chemistry that they've found a new form of DNA hiding in your cells!
It's called an i-motif.
And it's not, like, changing how we think about humans as a species or anything.
But it can help us understand how our DNA gets processed in our cells.
When you think of DNA, you probably think of the textbook double-helix structure, which
was discovered in the 1950s.
But for a while, scientists have known that strands of DNA come in at least a couple other
shapes.
Instead of looking like a twisted ladder, the i-motif looks like one strand of DNA got
tangled in a knot.
To make that happen, DNA's building blocks — called nucleotides — pair together in
a weird way.
Normally, cytosine bases always pair up with guanine.
But in the i-motif form, cytosine pairs with other cytosines.
I-motifs form in parts of DNA that are cytosine-rich.
Part of one DNA strand folds over itself and gets bunched up, so the other strand is alone.
It kind of looks like one side of a zipper got twisted into a knot.
This happens because one of the cytosines gets an extra proton from its environment
and becomes slightly positively charged, while the other stays neutral.
So they can bind.
Researchers had observed the i-motif structure before in test tubes, but now, we've seen
it in a few kinds of living human cells!
Like epithelial cells, which do things like line your organs.
To track down this elusive DNA, the team designed a new antibody fragment from pre-existing
molecules.
Antibodies are proteins your immune system uses to track down invaders, so they're
really good at binding to specific substances.
This one was made to cling to i-motif's funny structure, and to glow under certain
lights so the scientists could know where it was.
And it worked like a charm!
After tracking the i-motifs for a bit, the team also realized why they might've been
hard to find: these structures don't exist all the time.
Mainly, i-motifs form during the G1 phase of the cell cycle, when DNA is being read
by other molecules to make proteins and get ready for cell division.
Once that phase is over, most i-motifs seem to go away.
Although it's not clear if the DNA changes shape by itself, or if another molecule helps
untangle it.
Either way, this suggests that i-motifs are mainly involved in helping dividing cells
express certain genes and make certain proteins.
So even though it's been over 50 years since we first discovered the main structure of
DNA, we've still got so much to learn about it.

Officials In Two Cases Rule Conservatives Don't Have First Amendment Rights. - Duration: 4:35.
Officials In Two Cases Rule Conservatives Don't Have First Amendment Rights.
In two separate cases, it has been decided that it is fine to discriminate against supporters
of President Donald Trump and supporters of the police.
In other words, it has been decided by the liberals in power that conservatives are not
protected by the First Amendment.
In the first case, a New York judge decided that a bar which kicked out a man who was
wearing a Make America Great Again hat did not break the law.
The judge said that the law does not protect people against discrimination based on politics.
It started when Greg Piatek and his friends went to The Happiest Hour in New York in January
2017, and he wore his Make America Great Again hat.
Piatek and his friends got their first drinks with no issue, but when they wanted to order
again, they were ignored. They eventually got their next round of drinks from an angry bartender,
but then, another bartender addressed the hat, allegedly saying, "I can't believe
you would support someone so terrible and you must be as terrible a person!"
A manager also reportedly said to Piatek, "Anyone who supports Trump or believes what
you believe is not welcome here.
And, you need to leave right now because we won't serve you!"
The bar's attorney, Elizabeth Conway, argued in court that politics is not a protected
form of discrimination and that the law only applies to religion.
"Supporting Trump is not a religion," she said, according to Fox News.
Piatek's attorney, Paul Liggieri, said that his client wore the hat as a tribute to the
victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11.
"The purpose of the hat is that he wore it because he was visiting the 9/11 Memorial,"
he said.
"He was paying spiritual tribute to the victims of 9/11.
The Make America Great Again hat was part of his spiritual belief.
Rather than remove his hat, instead he held true to his spiritual belief and was forced
from the bar.Justice David Cohen was not moved.
"Plaintiff does not state any faith-based principle to which the hat relates," the
judge said.
"Here the claim that plaintiff was not served and eventually escorted out of the bar because
of his perceived support for President Trump is not outrageous conduct."
As for The Happiest Hour, it said this was irrelevant because Piatek is not telling the
truth.
It said that he was treated fine, and he gave a $36 tip on a $186 bar tab.
They further claimed that they believe he sued them as a publicity stunt.
In another case in Michigan, a city zoning board ruled that a restaurant could be forced
to not show its support for the police.
Johnny Brann, the owner of Brann's Steakhouse in Grand Rapids, was told by a letter from
the city that he had to remove flags he hung outside of his restaurant to honor fallen
police officers and soldiers.Brann told "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday that he has filed
an application to appeal the decision with the City of Grand Rapids Zoning Appeals Board.
But, even if his application is denied, he said that the flags are staying where they
are.
"The people of the United States got to understand the importance of law enforcement.
They protect us.
They protect and serve.
If you call them, it doesn't matter who you are, what time it is.
If your life's threatened, they're coming to help.
And they risk their lives every day they walk out to do their job," he said.
"Law enforcement and our military are vital," he added.
"So it's not even complicated to me, and the banners and the signs are staying up."
The audacity of this judge and this city zoning board to strip these Americans of their right
to free speech is unconscionable.
These cases are both matters of the protection of free speech.
If you do not have to serve supporters of President Donald Trump and only religion is
protected, what stops a bar from not serving customers based on any random bias they decide?
If that's their right, then why are Christian bakers forced to bake wedding cakes for gay
couples against their religion?
And, what stops a city from saying that a company can not have a sign supporting a politician
outside of its business?
What stops the free speech rights of any group from being destroyed by people in power with
a bias?
The prospect is terrifying.
what do you think about this?
