Tap Dance.TV - The behind the scenes story you probably didn't know - 50th video - Duration: 6:10.

Hi I'm Marta, I spent a lot of time thinking about this last video.

In the end, I decided to take you outside, to the places I go when I need to recharge or find inspiration,

and to share something personal (only a few people know) that happened earlier in the year.

Before I start, I must say that I don't share this kind of thing very easily.

If I talk about it at all

I tend to downplay it and make jokes about it because it's the way I typically deal with this kind of situation.

However, there are two reasons why I want to break with my old habits and share my story with you.

First, there is a strong connection between the event and this project,

and second, hearing this kind of "behind the scenes" story has helped me in my own life many times -

either to overcome my own struggles or to motivate me to keep going and not give up, no matter what situation I was facing.

It has been my dream to share the mini-routines and technical videos with those who might find them helpful for quite a while.

In the beginning of 2018,

I felt ready to start sharing all the materials and I sent the information to hundreds of people.

The next day, I went to the doctor and found out I needed a serious operation.

Eight years before, I had had a lump removed from behind my ear. The lump had returned and spread even more.

It was very close to my facial nerve,

so there was a serious risk that the doctors would have to cut the nerve in order to remove the lump completely.

If that had been the case, half of my face would have been paralyzed forever.

The doctors also informed me that the lump could potentially be cancerous.

I remember sitting in the car, devastated,

to be honest crying.

I didn't know what to do.

Should I quit?

Somehow I couldn't imagine sending such an email to everybody.

There was a serious possibility that the recovery after the operation would take a while

and of course, that something could go terribly wrong.

I took a few days and finally decided to continue,

to go as far as I could.

I had to cancel all the events I had been planning for the year:

a lot of new choreographies, theater performances, summer camps, and tap dance seminars.

I canceled everything except for this project.

I was hoping to film the videos in advance before my operation.

However, since I had to re-organize and plan everything else before the surgery,

I only managed to have 2 videos ready before the operation and that was it.

Then, all I could do was just sit back and hope for the best.

I had the best doctors I could have possibly had. A lot of great people were supporting me and taking care of me.

It ended up being a three hour surgery.

The doctors had to cut the nerve in my right ear in order to remove the lump completely,

which is why I will never have feeling in that ear again.

Fortunately, they didn't have to cut my facial nerve, but since the lump was so close to it,

half of my face (including my eye) was paralyzed for almost three months.

I had to wear contacts to keep my eye from drying out.

I remember the eye doctor telling me that if my facial nerve didn't start to function again, they would have to sew my eye shut.

Needless to say, it was a hard recovery with very slow progress.

At the time, I was so happy

that I had decided back in January to just include my feet in the videos.

If that hadn't been the case, I wouldn't have been able to finish the project.

About three weeks after the surgery, I was able to start filming again,

so I could continue the project without interruption while still attending physical therapy almost every day.

Luckily, all the test results came out for the best and in September my face returned to normal.

It was somehow one of the hardest and the best years I've ever had.

It gave me the opportunity to look at everything from a different angle.

To be grateful for the little things, and to re-value everything in my life.

I truly believe that this project with the videos, tap dance in general, and all of you helped me with my recovery.

And if only one person finds the mini-routines helpful or this story keeps any of you going in whatever hard situation you might be facing,

then it was worth it to continue and share this with you.

Thank you

I have had several opportunities for the videos, including selling them, but I've decided to keep them FREE for everybody.

I've also decided to continue to share what has been my passion for the last 22 years and help those who love tap dancing as much as I do.

I'll get back to you during January to tell you what I'm planning for you for the next year.

I wish you all the best for 2019, Marta

TV JOURNALISM PROJECT - EMU STUDENTS OPENED AN EXHIBITION - Duration: 5:17.

Good evening from EMU News Center

Our next news is common ''Engelsiz Kadraj'' photo exhibition which is a joint project

of photography club and pdr students.

Recently, Emu Photography club and Department of Guidance and Psychological counseling students

organized an exhibition for people with special needs.

Our news reporter Furkan Karagöz was there.

An exhibition opened by Emu Photography Club and Department of Guidance and Psychological

Counseling students within the scope of the project named ''Unobstructed Ideas''.

The exhibition, which opened on 24 December, was attended by a large number of participants.

Now with me is the education sciences lecturer, Munise Alibeyoglu

I'm going to ask her what has been happening within the project.

Okay Miss, I'd like to ask you, how did the project come about and how was the exhibition

The "Engelsiz Fikirler" project as part of the community services lesson, was one

of our most special projects.

Together with ten of our 4th year students, we first decided we wanted to do a study based

on disabilities.

The students themselves wanted to pick the topic of disabilities, and I arranged the

opportunity for the students to meet with over 18s with disabilities from the Irfan

Nadir Rehabilitation Centre for over 18s.

During our visits, there were workshops, and we observed that there were not enough teachers.

The young people who attend the centre are of similar ages to our students, and we realised

that the young people didn't have the chance to take part in workshops and educational

activities all day.

Because of this, we decided with the students to put in place a range of workshops for the

young people.

We thought that it would be very important to provide them with the opportunity to make

their own products and jewellery and paint their own pictures for their own progress.

This also provides the ability to socialise with our students who are of similar ages,

and to help them to integrate into society.

We wanted there to be a physical representation of the day and so decided to photograph the

activities and display these in an exhibition to raise awareness within the community of

over 18s with special needs.

Along with the photography club, our students photographed the music and sport workshops

and various activities over the 3-4 days spent at the centre.

We had the chance to display the photographs at our school, within the media, and also

to show the photographs to the other academics.

The students who conducted the project were honourable guests at the exhibition, and by

doing so, we allowed them to realise their existence.

It proved to be a very good exhibition, and we achieved what we had initially aimed to

do.

Money can't buy the smiles on the students' faces when they saw themselves in the photographs

and the reactions of the visitors.

I'd like to thank all of the students who helped with the project, and that study educational

sciences, as well as the photography club.
