Hi everyone.
I'm Dr. Rita Louise
Psychic Reading Summary for The Week Of Marsh 1, 2018
What the heck is going on?
It seems like non-stop action these days.
You may find yourself in situations where conflict may arise.
We are working through a very powerful energy dynamic right now, so I hope you watch the
entire reading so that you can be emotionally prepared for what is coming your way..
Here's This Week's Full Planetary Vibration Psychic Reading
The upside-down feelings of last week are lingering as we move into this new forecast
period.
Are you wondering what the heck is going on?
Well, join the club because it seems like non-stop action these days.
But I have some good news to share.
If some of the events that may be transpiring in your life happened to you a year ago or
more, especially with the rapid fire we are experiencing, I think many of us would be
in melt down mode.
Instead, we are looking at what is going on and saying "OK" and just shaking our heads
in disbelief.
It is a blessing and a curse.
As the world keeps getting crazier around us, our ability to deal with the changing
tides has greatly improved.
We have and are still learning to make separation from our feelings and not being held hostage
to them.
On the flip side, is that good?
Are we becoming desensitized?
Will it make us less passionate, less empathetic and less caring?
Will in impact our ability to act human?
A duel edged sword at best.
Speaking of last year.
There were so many of us that felt deep and profound feelings of helplessness, or better
said hopelessness.
This pervading feeling was impacting even some of the most spiritually minded people
I know creating an environment where they were not able to find themselves amidst the
internal clutter.
I feel that right now we are approaching a precious of possibly reentering that energy
vibration.
The combination of pain (physical, emotional or both) plus the feeling that there is no
way to escape it has people on edge, but I have to tell you, I do not get the impression
that we will reenter that black hole of despair again.
Can I get an Amen to that?
With tensions running high, you may find that you are not eating enough or are perhaps drinking
too much.
These symptoms are indicating just how much you are holding on to.
The trapped energy is sitting in the stomach area, in the 3rd chakra.
This energy center is the seat of our power, our personal power as well as our willpower.
Well, everyone, our 3rd chakra's are on overdrive these days.
It is taking a lot of our inner energy to hold our space, to stand up for what we feel
is right or to maintain our boundaries without falling over or succumbing to external pressures.
So be warned.
You may find yourself in situations where conflict may arise.
If you are holding your ground and you interact with someone who is holding their ground,
except your convictions are 180 degrees diametrically opposed, well, I think you get the picture.
Hard as this is for me to say, but this is not a time to back down.
Actually, even if you wanted to, I don't know that you could.
Well I am going to take a deep breath now.
This has been a very powerful reading.
I am looking forward to the day where things calm down and we can start loving each other
on multiple levels again.
Well, that's it for this week's reading.

Merixstudio: True or False - Developers - Duration: 2:08.
Of course it's true
No. I try to eat only heathy.
I also quite often go to the gym.
I think that not every developer.
It's kind of true and kind of...not.
Nope
And you? Are you afraid of women?
YES!
You know, it basically depends on the individual.
Nope.
Well, as shown by the example of our company, it's not true.
No, and I am the best example of this.
No. That's not true.
Not always.
No.
No.
I moved out from my parents house quite early in my life.
Developers often live with their parents because they can't find a girlfriend.
Frankly, I don't know anyone
who lives with their parents
and works at Merixstudio.
Well, maybe not MILLIONS, but I think it pays to be a developer.
This is definitely a profession that brings a little more profits.
Maybe not milions, but I think that this is an industry
in which earnings are rather good.
If you're considering working as a dev, it is worth.
Sitting in front of a computer and in meetings.
Probably not.
With customers and team.
Sometimes you need to go get coffee.
No.
No, that's not true.
It is not true.
I think that many programmers are aware that
that sitting so many hours in front of the computer
will be very bad for their health sooner or later.
So they try to do something else.

Hand and/or Wrist Injuries: How to easily test nerve function - Duration: 2:55.
Hand injuries are commonly seen in the ED and proper evaluation and treatment of these
complaints can be limb-saving.
Injuries often involve the tendons, nerves, bones, blood vessels, and skin of the hand.
When obtaining a history from the patient, it's important to note the patient's age,
hand dominance, occupation, tetanus status, the mechanism and the time course of the injury.
These factors are important in risk-stratifying the patient.
For instance, an injury which occurred due to a dog bite places the patient for high
risk of pasteurella multocida infection or likewise eikenella corrodens infection from
a human bite.
In open fractures, the time elapsed since injury is important to know in order to minimize
injury from vascular loss and for wound management.
When examining the hand, it's important to assess the patient in steps:
1.
Appearance
Check for:
Finger position, with respect to scissoring or flexing at rest.
Gross deformity, such as an open fracture or dislocation.
Bruising or swelling.
2.
Vascular Status
Check by assessing:
Radial and ulnar pulses.
Capillary refill (should be less than 2 -3 seconds).
3.
Sensation & Motor Function
For motor function, check the following:
First, the median nerve, also known as the "Tea-drinking" Nerve.
Test by checking the "OK" Sign: Ask the patient to touch the tip of the index finger
to the tip of the thumb.
Second, the ulnar nerve, looking at intrinsic muscle function.
Test by asking the patient to hold a piece of paper between adducted fingers, as you
try to pull it away. Finally, the radial nerve, looking at extensor muscle function.
Test by asking the patient to give a "thumbs up" and to twist their wrist.
For sensory function, check the patient's sensation in the distribution of the median,
ulnar, and radial nerves.

How to make powdered sugar | Basic or with natural flavors - Duration: 3:53.
Hello everyone, let's see how to make powdered sugar...
...adding a natural flavor of your choice.
You just need a blender/food processor and granulated sugar.
Our powdered sugar is ready.
You can flavor it adding citrus peel, cinnamon, cardamon, fennel etc.
Let's add a lemon peel.
It is a shame that I cannot share this wonderful fragrance of lemon with you.
The same procedure is valid for the other flavors.
Let's add fennel seeds and orange peel.
I wish I could share their fragrance.

VLOGGING IS EMBARRASSING! 4 or 5 Island Tour? Krabi VLOG E28 - Duration: 6:41.
Another day, another island tour.
Another vlog
Sorry.
Today, we're doing a five island tour
And those Islands consist of
Poda island
Tup Island
Chicken Island
and Railay Bay again
Or 4 island tour? We're not really sure.
Can you turn it down a little bit 'cause it's embarrassing.
Vlogging's embarrassing.
Tell me something that I don't know!
Tup Island
It's quite nice.
Still a lot of people for me.
I was hoping we could go to Jom Island,
which they say is more quiet
Signs are everywhere.
No drones.
This is becoming a common theme here,
so I don't have a drone film in this holiday, I don't think.
Everywhere: No drones.
It's just mean I'm just trying to promote your lovely country
and make it look beautiful and you won't let me fly my drone.
Other than being fined 1000 baht.
You can also go to prison for five years
and get a forty thousand baht fine.
Now, we're gonna walk across a sandbank
We've only got forty minutes here anyway
and we've already spent most of the time
walking across the sandbank to this island
What island is this?
Chicken island, apparently
That's not why it's named chicken island,
there's actually a chicken head somewhere on it,
but we haven't seen that yet
You can take her to a beautiful tropical island like this
And she's not really happy until she gets some food
Look at that smile now now she's had some food.
She's that happiest girl in the world
Dont know why I spend the money on the holidays
when I just need to buy her a sandwich
so they gave us 40 minutes on these islands,
and we just walked across the sand-bank
had a coke, ate the sandwich
and we've got five minutes to get back -oops.
I hope we're not the last back onto the boat
It's always awkward being the last back on the boat
Like you've held everyone up.
Nah, it's not gonna be us.
So I think we are the last two back on the boat
So you'll get some exclusive footage now
of what it feels like to be the two that hold up the tour.
That's us! Sorry.
Okay, just 4 minutes late.
Im gonna throw this at your face!
Lucky there's one gentleman around
Sorry, wont do it again.
No worries!
I'm gonna have to ask you to turn that off
and that's why it's called 'Chicken Island'
So now we're gonna go snorkeling
Actually I lie. We just did it, but that's how vlogs work
We have to lie about the order we do stuff in
AUTOGENEREATED SUBS BEGINS: because ever wise abandon me would be underwater snorkeling about this intro for it
Baby girl
We just been snorkeling probably solo, I don't know
I'll make it up as I go along really a film sure I make it work and edit. Hopefully it works after that
And now it's lunchtime you can hear our towers
Yeah, good time so after lunch really kind of fell asleep
Fell asleep on the beach and got woke up to being thrown back on the boat to come here which is Riley Bay again
Yeah this time
We've ended up on fourth and nine Beach, which is the bit that we missed yesterday, so that's fucking awesome
But it just worked out perfectly
We've now got to see the whole of Riley Bay
We're going to the cave
Great great for anything but most of it great for a love. We've already got love, so we're praying for height
Come here is that filming?
I wasn't expecting a cave for the better
Didn't things things of worship your inappropriate. I said these are appropriate
Can you take a photo of me in the cave of the pieces?
Yeah, I think we're last ones on the boat again
Oh anyone melee this time so yeah, that's the five island so do it if you want see you tomorrow, that's ten minutes
Let you win the summer

Who's Better To Takedown, Paul Ryan Or Donald Trump? - Duration: 4:10.
For this last part of the show here, I want to go to Twitter.
I want to take your questions.
If you have a question, send it using the #askrof.
Our first question today comes from Steve Levine, who asks "Which event would have larger
positive results?
Defeating Paul Ryan or impeaching Trump?"
That is a very good question.
To be honest, I have to say without a doubt, defeating Paul Ryan.
Defeating Paul Ryan is a much bigger feat and would have a much larger impact than impeaching
Donald Trump would at this point because let's keep in mind, impeaching Donald Trump, getting
him out of office, will not change the current trajectory of this country.
All it changes is the bully mentality would probably die down a little bit because I don't
think we're going to see Mike Pence, at least not to the same level, get on Twitter and
insult other world leaders, antagonize other countries, and make fun of people within his
party and people in the opposition party.
I don't see Mike Pence doing that.
In terms of policy, Mike Pence will be identical to Donald Trump, as would any Republican.
Donald Trump's policies are no different from what Republicans have been pushing for decades,
decades.
So no, Mike Pence and Donald Trump, the only difference is the bully mentality.
The narcissism dies off slightly.
It's that big of a problem that, yeah, Pence would be better than Donald Trump.
That's one of the reasons why impeachment is so important.
But to defeat Paul Ryan, that is a massive feat.
There's two ways to do it.
Obviously, Randy Bryce, Iron Stache, running against Paul Ryan, him winning that election,
showing the powerful Republican establishment that they are not as powerful as they think
they are, getting defeated by a working class, blue collar American, that would send shockwaves
through this country, not just through the Republican Party but it would empower other
people who might be clocking in and out at a factory every single day thinking "You know
what?
Maybe I could run for something.
Maybe I could make a difference.
Randy Bryce did, he defeated the man who is arguably the most powerful Republican in the
country next to Donald Trump.
If he can do it, I can do it."
That's the most positive message we could send to people all over this country.
To be honest, regardless of party, showing that average citizens, the people that you
work next to each day, that you could make a difference, you could go to Washington D.C.
and work on behalf of the people instead of a corporation, that would send the most positive
message.
The other way to defeat Paul Ryan is that even if he wins reelection, which, man, I
hope he doesn't, if we turn the House blue, we defeat Paul Ryan.
He's no longer Speaker of the House.
He loses his overall authority there, and that would have just as big of an impact.
We'd still have his voice there.
We'd have his input, which is unwanted and unnecessary if you ask me.
But that would be the second-best option.
The first-best option obviously is to have Randy Bryce, Iron Stache, come in, take the
day, win that election, and send that message that you don't have to be a part of the wealthy
elite, that you don't have to take corporate money, that you don't have to sell your soul
or give up your values to properly represent the American people.

Revisiting Sleeping Dogs or: Why The Movie Won't Work - Duration: 7:53.
Hi, I'm Hamish Black and welcome to Writing on Games. When I've talked about certain
games not working in any other form before, the games in question tend to be these lofty
deconstructions of the medium that have you reflecting on your actions or whatever. Which
is why it's perhaps odd that, upon hearing word that a film adaptation of 2012's Sleeping
Dogs was in the works, I was sceptical in the way I would be had you told me that Hellblade
was being turned into a movie, for example. In a way, it's a similar problem I foresee
the upcoming Uncharted film having; namely that you make that movie, don't be surprised
when you end up with a pale imitation of Indiana Jones. But I feel that the potential issues
with Sleeping Dogs go deeper than that. There isn't that disconnect you have with Uncharted
where you've taken a certain franchise and turned it into a stop-and-pop shooter. To
hear the developers talk about it, Sleeping Dogs' identity is far more intrinsically
tied to the Hong Kong action films that inspired it, but the beauty lies in what it does with
this influence; using its mechanics and systems to fully place you at the centre of an undercover
cop martial arts thriller. You can see this vision in the game's use
of the Batman Arkham combat system, for example; rewarding simple inputs and recognition of
visual cues with intense animations. Fluidity becomes the priority as you treat each encounter
as if it were a rhythm game more than a brawler, reflecting the way a director like John Woo
views his own action scenes, for example. You can also see it in the game's world
design. Over the many hours of your playtime, you get used to navigating the winding, neon-draped
streets of Hong Kong to the extent that the city becomes a character in itself; leading
to moments between missions where you aren't necessarily focused on the plot, but the detail
of the open world is consistently establishing a sense of place nonetheless. That's something
you don't get with a bunch of expedited establishing shots in a movie, no matter how
good they might look. But in revisiting it, perhaps the most impressive
part of Sleeping Dogs' vision is that it doesn't just stop at the game's combat.
Arguably the main reason Sleeping Dogs can only work as a game, is that it manages to
gamify the complicated morality of being an undercover cop at the core of so many of its
cinematic influences. Again, it might seem weird to say this, considering
that the story of Sleeping Dogs isn't particularly complicated in any way. Stop me if you've
heard this before: undercover cop gets in too deep and begins to question his loyalties;
having to convince his higher ups that he's different from the criminals he's been sent
in to bring down. It's Infernal Affairs, Hard Boiled, Police Story; it's an effective
"one of those," but at the end of the day it's still just "one of those."
But that's where Sleeping Dogs' morality system comes in; managing to avoid the pitfalls
of the many similar systems found in games around that time; the ones that would treat
morality as a simple good and bad binary. Protagonist Wei Shen's struggle is more
complicated than that; he's neither morally righteous in his duties as a cop nor a totally
unhinged maniac as a triad footsoldier. He's trapped in and trying to make sense of a strange
and dangerous situation; trodden on by law enforcement but given status by his gang.
Now how does the game make you feel this moral ambiguity, you might ask? By making being
an objectively good cop really goddamn hard. See, in Sleeping Dogs you have two scoring
systems during missions – triad and cop points. Triad points are associated with fighting
enemies, while cop points line up with, you guessed it, obeying the law. As you gain more
points in each, Wei gains more abilities along two separate skill trees, meaning you're
incentivised to keep both as high as possible. Where this contributes to the story is the
way you're scored on each. Your triad score is a blank slate; starting at zero and filling
up as you dispatch your foes using whatever grisly method takes your fancy. Your cop meter
on the other hand, starts full and gradually declines as you mess up; from things as extreme
as running over civilians to being clumsy with a parkour prompt.
Put simply, your triad score is a reward for creativity; your cop score is punitive towards
stepping out of line and crucially, both are active at the same time. It is possible to
fulfil both your requirement to the gritty world of the triad and maintain your reputation
as a police officer, but it's a remarkably difficult tightrope to walk.
To be a good cop, you have to go against the urges countless open world crime games have
hammered into your head. The world is no longer your oyster; you could cut that corner to
more effectively pursue your target, but you'd be endangering lives. How about that enticing
sick jump over there? Well, make sure you don't land on a fence; heaven forfend you
do some damage to property. After a while, it becomes easier and easier to forego the
niceties of being a police officer, in favour of a more bombastic approach; mirroring Wei's
decline. And what's great about all of this is that,
at the end of the day, it falls on you to police yourself. In other games of this ilk,
the police act as a means of resetting the balance of the world; as you do more and more
daft video game shit, the game pushes back against you with increasing severity to stop
you feeling indestructible. In Sleeping Dogs, it's difficult to get any kind of wanted
level outside of scripted moments, meaning that the constant decline of that meter – its
attachment to the development of your character - is the only thing stopping you from going
completely off the rails. It's all in service of asking the question
– in a world where we're told that crime doesn't pay, what if it did? You experience
the triad lifestyle as enticing; it encourages you to do whatever the hell you want, costs
be damned. The cops, by comparison, are framed as the leash around your neck. By having to
balance both loyalties at the same time, you feel the struggle Wei does; trying and failing
to maintain distance from the triad he is now a part of.
And just think about that for a minute; we get all this from a slight rejigging of the
way in which morality is given a score during missions. It seems so simple, but speaks to
the larger issue that even with what feel like the least complicated games, it's not
just the words that tell the story; it's how the words are sold to you through your
interactions, the world design, etc. Every little element of a game that simply won't
be there in a two hour, uninteractive film. And look, I'm sure Donnie Yen would be more
than competent, I'm sure the action scenes would be flashy and I'm sure you could write
some serviceable dialogue to move that action along. What you would be missing out on, however,
is the fact that Sleeping Dogs is a simple story well told; and without the means of
telling that story well, what you're left with will undoubtedly feel shallow by comparison.
So I hope you enjoyed my piece revisiting Sleeping Dogs. If you did, maybe consider

Gold Manipulation: Fact or Fiction? | Real Vision Video - Duration: 4:46.
Because of its fascination for mankind, gold has always been surrounded by conspiracy theories
and stories of price suppression and manipulation.
That's really no surprise.
After all, wherever you find money, you inevitably find human beings trying
to cheat in some way or another.
Fake gold bars have frequently surfaced over the years, with gold-plated tungsten, which
has an identical density to gold, being the most common substitute.
Fortunately, any one of a number of very simple tests
will provide a conclusive answer as to whether a particular bar is fake or not.
Gold is unique.
However, the most important questions about possible manipulation of the gold price concern
much broader issues and occur at a much higher
level.
Well, look, the question about manipulation is clearly a favored one, people
like to discuss this.
I do think that even a cursory glance at historical fact will lead you in fairly clear
direction.
I mean, it's not like this is a hidden thing.
I mean, the London Gold Pool existed, it was an overt
way of managing the gold price in terms of its price.
It's clearly in the interest of central bank to manage,
particularly in the monetary system as it functions right now-- whether it does function
not being a slightly separate point-- it's clearly in their interest
to manage the risk-free rates.
Would you influence the gold price?
Well, it's said that gold is the reciprocal trust of
central banks, you betcha it would achieve the gold price, notwithstanding the fact that
central banks are the biggest holders of gold-- 60% of their
reserves are in gold, would you want to suppress it?
You betcha.
The problem's too big.
Are they doing it?
I don't know is the answer, but money-- there's always
a raising certainty, they probably are.
Others, however, are far more confident, not only as to the question of whether the gold
price is manipulated, but also who the culprits might
be.
Well, the gold price is absolutely manipulated.
When I say that, I'm not, you know, implying some
deep, dark conspiracy.
I don't think Janet Yellen wakes up in the morning and thinks about gold-- I don't
think Janet Yellen knows anything about gold to be honest with you.
She's sort of a geeky liberal labor economist who worships the Phillips curve,
so I don't think Janet Yellen is behind some conspiracy to
suppress the price of gold.
But there's absolutely manipulation.
I've spoken to several experts.
One is a PhD statistician, so it's not a PhD in economics, it's a PhD in statistics.
Works for one of the largest hedge funds in the world.
He looked at a 10-year time series and he took--
like literately tick-by-tick information on the COMEX gold
futures for 10 years, and he said there is no explanation for this data other than manipulation,
it could not possibly have happened through normal
market forces.
In particular, he knows that at the end of the
day, like on the last trading tick on the COMEX, the price of gold got smacked down.
And then at the open the next day, it could kind of pop up
again.
So he said, well, this is the easiest trade in the world, just buy gold right after the
close and sell it the next morning just before the open, and you know,
just make consistent, steady profits.
Well, anyone knows anything about markets and how they operate
knows that you cannot make consistent, steady profit.
This is what Bernie Madoff said he was doing, right?
So he said the probability that the price naturally goes
down at the close and naturally goes up the next morning is like zero after 10 years.
And this is not inference, I mean, this is like DNA.
Like, you know, you may not see the crime being
committed, but if you have the DNA evidence, you can be pretty sure who did it.
Governments everywhere throughout history have wanted to manage-- it's a critical national
securitywhether you go back to the time of the Romans, et
cetera, value of a currency is very, very important to
manage, particularly if you're a government that hasn't managed your finances all that
well.
And unfortunately, that is over time, most governments
sooner or later find themselves in that position.
And so the manipulation is right there in the open in that it is a creation of a derivative
market that satisfies demand that would otherwise go into
physical, and that was the goal of setting that up and that's
not well understood I don't think by many market participants, but as I said, it's there
in black and white in kind of the historical archives.

10 Things We Know or Don't about 'Oumuamua - Duration: 11:39.
Comets and asteroids come and go, but few make as much of a stir as 'Oumuamua.
Toward the end of last year, its virtually unprecedented appearance from interstellar
space made urgent headlines around the world.
And, in various ways, it left an indelible footprint.
While numerous mysteries remain about this curious galactic traveller, astronomers managed
to glean several key pieces of information during its recent fly-by.
Here are some of the most interesting.
10.
It Probably Isn't Alien Technology
The discovery of 'Oumuamua was oddly coincidental with last year's revelations about the Pentagon's
secret black money UFO program.
And indeed the first thought among even seasoned astronomers like Stephen Hawking was that
it could be an alien starship, or at least an artifact from some extraterrestrial civilization.
With the backing of Hawking (as well as Mark Zuckerberg and Yuri Milner) the Breakthrough
Listen initiative set out to detect signs of intelligence from the object, specifically
listening for artificial radio signals.
And while at the time of writing they hadn't found any, the team accumulated a massive
90 terabytes of raw data across billions of individual channels, so a full analysis (including
pulsating signals as well as continuous) may take some time.
That said, another research team carried out spectroscopic observations and concluded that
the object is natural.
Nevertheless, the spot-on timing of 'Oumuamua's discovery (and the inevitable comingling of
media coverage) has fueled a "false flag" conspiracy theory that the military-industrial
complex is preparing us for a staged alien invasion.
Such a bigger, badder menace, it is feared, could potentially clear the way for unlimited
military spending and harsher civil restrictions.
9.
It's Seen as a "Messenger from Afar"
Officially designated 1I/2017 U1 by the International Astronomical Union—the first of a brand
new class—the object's unofficial (but for some equally unwieldy) nickname 'Oumuamua
was given by the Pan-STARRS team that discovered it.
Pronounced oh-MOO-uh MOO-uh, the word is Hawaiian for "messenger from afar arriving first,"
and it's particularly apt considering the potentially breakthrough data the object carries
about the formation of other solar systems.
Assuming it doesn't turn out to be artificial (and even, or especially, if it does!), there's
a lot more we can learn from it too, including the long-term effects of exposure to cosmic
rays.
Astronomers studying the origins of 'Oumuamua have been especially poetic in their appraisal,
describing the object as a "messenger sent from the distant past to reach out to us."
8.
It's Among the Fastest Objects Ever Detected
One of the most surprising things about 'Oumuamua was its incredible speed.
The average asteroid travels at 25 km/s and the average comet at 40 km/s relative to the
Earth.
But when 'Oumuamua was discovered in October 2017, it was going an impressive 60 km/s relative
to the Earth and only picking up speed as it approached the Sun.
At its fastest, just as it slingshot around the star, it reached a blinding 87.3 km/s,
or 196,000 miles per hour (315,431 km/h) relative to the Sun, which kept it from falling in
completely and burning up for good.
Although 'Oumuamua lost speed considerably as it climbed away, owing to the intense gravitational
pull of the Sun, it maintains a velocity of around 26 km/s (93,600 km/h) as it flies along
its new trajectory.

It's Pink
Although a great deal of media attention has focused on the reddish hue of 'Oumuamua,
it's not actually all that remarkable—and it's not actually all that red.
Outside of a star's magnetic field, drifting through interstellar space, objects like 'Oumuamua
are continually exposed to high-energy radiation from cosmic rays.
And, as is well known among astronomers, this continual bombardment substantially alters
surface properties over time.
In fact, the process of color change is so reliable that the redness of an object can
be used to gauge, approximately, how long it's been floating in space.
Since 'Oumuamua is pinkish in color it's unlikely to have been wandering for the billions
of years that some have suggested (and for which our solar system has existed).
Instead, its relatively neutral color suggests exposure for hundreds of millions of years
at the most, a "relatively young" age when it comes to celestial driftwood.
6.
It's Not Really the First Interstellar Visitor
Another media focus has been the rarity of interstellar objects in our solar system,
with many claiming that 'Oumuamua is in fact the first.
It's certainly interesting to note that none of the 750,000 or so asteroids and comets
within our solar system are thought to have come from outside it—even though planet
formation ejects plenty of material into interstellar space.
That said, 'Oumuamua is extremely unlikely to be the first interstellar object to visit.
There are estimated to be more than 46 million such objects crossing our solar system each
year, most of which are just too far away to be seen.
It is, however, the first detectable object known to be interstellar in origin.
And we know this because of its hyperbolic trajectory (a trajectory outside of any central
body's gravitational pull) and its speed at infinity (a velocity higher than escape
velocity, the minimum speed required to escape a massive body's gravitational pull).
That we haven't seen more of these is really just a limitation of our technology; we were
lucky to catch even this one.
As more advanced telescopes come online, astronomers expect to see plenty more interstellar objects
flying through our solar system.
Among other things, this means more opportunities for research and more potential targets for
extraterrestrial life.
5.
It Defies Categorization
When it was discovered by the University of Hawaii's Pan-STARRS1 telescope, 'Oumuamua
was thought to be a comet.
But it had more rock than ice and, although it heated up when it passed the Sun—reaching
a surface temperature of 550 degrees Fahrenheit—no surface ice boiled off and no tail developed.
But it's not an asteroid either; researchers found no signs of the usual minerals, speculating
instead that 'Oumuamua consists of a robust carbon casing around an icy core—frozen
alien water shielded for hundreds of millions of years and unable to boil off in starlight.
In other words, says astronomer Alan Fitzsimmons of Queen's University Belfast, it looks
like an asteroid but it's built like a comet—albeit one that's turned inside out.
Even this theory has been thrown into question more recently, though, since there's no
evidence of water either.
For now, 'Oumuamua is simply referred to as an "interstellar object," or sometimes
more romantically as a sola lapis or "lonely rock."
4.
It Looks Like a Cigar (or a Needle, or an Oddly Shaped Pen, or Maybe Even a Monolith
from 2001)
Widely circulated images like the one above are of course artists' impressions.
Nobody's seen 'Oumuamua up close.
So the question arises: How do we know what it looks like?
The truth is we don't—not exactly.
All we know is that it's around ten times as long as it is wide, and we base this on
observations of light.
As the object spins on its axis (once every 7.3 hours or so), huge fluctuations in brightness
suggest a greater aspect ratio than anything seen before—comet or asteroid.
Imagine a shiny cylinder spinning toward a light in slow motion; you'd see relatively
little light reflected from the ends but, as it rotated, substantially more from the
sides.
Even if you didn't know the shape, you'd be able to guess the dimensions.
As such, 'Oumuamua is thought to be around 400 meters (or one quarter mile) in length
and just 40 meters wide, although some estimates put it at 800×80 meters or even 160 meters
in width.
Whatever the case, the shape is certainly weird, and this could give us clues as to
how other solar systems form.
3.
We May Never Know Where It Came From
There are various theories as to the origins of 'Oumuamua, but none can be taken as fact.
According to one theory, it could be from the Kuiper Belt or Oort Cloud and not interstellar
at all.
In this case, its speed would suggest the presence of an as yet undiscovered planet
whose gravity would be required to boost it.
In earlier simulations, 'Oumuamua's trajectory was tracked back to the bright star Vega in
the constellation of Lyra; however, because it would have taken 300,000 years to reach
us (even at such speeds), Vega wouldn't have been in the same position when 'Oumuamua
is supposed to have left.
Wherever the object originated, it's likely to have been ejected from the debris surrounding
a young star (also known as the protoplanetary disk)—perhaps in the Pleiades—hundreds
of millions of years ago.
It may now be part of an immense interstellar asteroid field, through which our Sun and
its satellites are currently cruising on our journey around the Milky Way's core.
There are estimated to be around 700 trillion such objects per cubic parsec, which is pretty
dense considering a parsec is equivalent to just 30 trillion kilometers.
Based on these figures, anywhere between 2 and 12 interstellar objects should be passing
through the solar system, inside Earth's orbit, every year.
2.
It's Leaving Us, But It'll Take Some Time
'Oumuamua is now on its way out of the solar system, headed back out to the stars at a
rate of 26 km/s.
But even at that speed, it'll take 20,000 years for it to leave our solar system entirely.
Meanwhile, it's becoming increasingly difficult (if it's not yet impossible) to observe
'Oumuamua with existing telescopes—an especially unfortunate situation given its
rarity.
Understandably, astronomers are clamouring for a closer look, and sending a probe to
the object—however far-fetched that sounds—is one of their highest priorities.
Of course, that means chasing 'Oumuamua down and intercepting it at speeds higher
than 26 km/s, which isn't really plausible given current technology.
Even Voyager 1, the fastest object ever launched, can only reach 16.6 km/s.
The longer we leave it, though, the faster we'll need to go to catch up within a reasonable
timeframe, that is, before 'Oumuamua travels too far out for our probe to return data to
Earth.
Laser propulsion—whereby ultra-light, wafer-thin craft are propelled to within 25 percent of
the speed of light by multi-megawatt lasers in orbit—could hold promise, but the technology
is nowhere near ready.
As such, some astronomers are banking instead on laser sails being available in time for
the next interstellar arrival.
1.
It Shows Us How Unprepared We Are for Possible Asteroid Impacts
One of the things 'Oumuamua can teach us is how to better detect near-Earth and potentially
hazardous objects.
But its sudden appearance to our telescopes is a bit of a wake up call.
Were 'Oumuamua's trajectory headed toward Earth, it would have hit us before we'd
even seen it.
The worst case scenario, according to amateur researchers, would have been the leveling
of an entire city with a force equivalent to 2,057 Hiroshima bombs.
Entering the atmosphere at 233 times the speed of sound, 'Oumuamua could have vaporized
everything within at least a 50 kilometer (30 mile) radius of ground zero, killing hundreds
of thousands or even millions of people.
Bigger, more sophisticated telescopes—such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope currently
under construction in Chile—will no doubt help us to better detect objects in the future.
But, for now at least, 'Oumuamua highlights a worrying vulnerability to space rocks—especially
considering the Pan-STARRS telescope that discovered it (after it passed by) is specifically
tasked with our protection.
