Jeff Wall: An Impossible Photograph | Art21 "Extended Play" - Duration: 3:37.

[Jeff Wall: An Impossible Photograph]

[INTERVIEWER, OFF SCREEN] So let me just ask a question.

The gentleman on the wall there,

who's looking in the plate-glass window,

and who has these incredible trousers on--

did you make those trousers?

Did he make those trousers?

Did you impose those trousers on him?

Is there any artifice going on there?

How do you describe that?

[JEFF WALL] It's classified information.

[LAUGHS]

[INTERVIEWER] And the same of the other picture there,

with the woman trying on the dress?

[WALL] That's also classified information.

What you see happening, happened.

That's all I have to tell you.

How it happened is secondary

to the fact that it happened.

And let's imagine that I found this man on the sidewalk

and got him to do what he was already doing--

or if I had elaborately reconstructed that--

what's the difference?

I mean, there is obviously a difference

factually, historically, and so on.

And in photography, that difference matters.

Artistically in photography,

it can't matter any more than it does in any other art form.

In painting, it doesn't matter.

In sculpture, it doesn't matter.

In theater, it doesn't matter.

In cinema, it doesn't matter.

It only matters in one art form,

and that's photography.

That's why you have to deal with it.

[INTERVIEWER] Well, what was the starting point?

[WALL] Um...

Kind of a memory from thirty, forty years ago

that came back unexpectedly.

When I realized I liked the subject,

the question was, "How on earth could you photograph that?"

The impossibility of seeing it was one of the triggers for it becoming interesting.

So, on that side of the dressing room,

you know there will be a mirror,

because on the opposite side is a curtain.

But it's not a mirror image,

because if you look at the hangers,

they say "Barneys" on them--

not backwards.

The curtain is closed.

No one has got access to see into the dressing room.

You're not allowed to have one-way mirrors in dressing rooms.

You can't have surveillance cameras in dressing rooms.

These are all facts that,

if you analyze the picture,

you will have to come to this conclusion.

Therefore, the only thing that you can be seeing

is what the mirror sees.

So, that's a picture that can't be made.

This caused many interesting difficulties.

Barneys is a store you can steal from.

So of course I had to go to Barneys

and take photographs of the dressing rooms

and measure them and get every detail

and then copy the thing.

[CLICKING OF LIGHT SWITCH ECHOES]

What I've told you is something that I believe

if you pay attention to that picture

and enjoy it and look at it-- get involved in it--

it'll come to you.

And when it comes to you, it'll be exciting.

You know, the most beautiful artistry is hidden.

But there's no secret.

It's not like it's a secret.

It's a condition.

Criticism of the "SOME" national police. #frikisocial #jandrolion - Duration: 9:42.

What's wrong, trunks ?!

Thank you for being on the channel again

The criticism received in the channel

For the latest video humor

He has mixed the national police with the song "Despacito"

And the famous "twitter" police have been totally unacceptable

And now I want to explain in a moment because you know that it costs me my job, so ... the parrot!

I have been annoyed

And now I want to know

Although I not surprise me because in the wake of last video we went, and I've put it here

Video criticism Esteban Navarro

National policeman reprimanded for writing a book

As there was no support

And in social networks also my publication was not not even discussed

I opened a little mind

Well ... That is what has happened?

The National Police tweeted

What was put

A small "Break" three police officers

Dancing song "Despacito" and such

But I found it very horny, very funny, very funny

Make another approach

Making the Tronca Incognita call the police

For a matter of urgency ... and of course, as they are with the "Break, eh!

The first thing I want to say is how is this channel

This channel has a set of values

They are positive values

The police image has never been degraded, contrary

We have always been heading the citizen

To show you that knows no national police in tributes like the one I put up here right now

What have we done

Our way of working is

Through humor and frikismo

Have an approach to the citizen

And give teaching

And that's what we will instill

Always

Police currently have a problem

When you approve the national police must pass an instruction in Avila

When you walk in Avila, the first thing you there is inculcated that social networks are highly dangerous

Why? ... Because just a photo

Or even a video of a bad intervention

Or as is the case with the local police dancing in the car, which ended up being punished

Or that fear Disciplinary measures

There, for a recording of a citizen that can end badly

For in the end it greatly influences the attitude

And police activity

That fear ultimately makes

That the national police is very conservative

When I speak of the national police, I am also referring to all state security forces

Of course with the current mentality, being conservative when one tries to approach the citizen through humor or by "freak"

It is banging against the wall because they will always look ridiculous plan

And looking comparative

With other police sectors, whether

The IPU, the Judicial Police

Or fighting jihadism

And else

Of course, we are talking about different jobs

We can not mix apples with pears

I believe that the time change

Dinosaurs begin to retire and come new times

New clean air

It is forgetting that a national police may have hobbies

You can have tastes, hobbies

They are not machines, they are human beings

And you can feel so proud or more even

Without having to wear the uniform top, making things even

Good, outside of what your working hours

The no support. The lack of support they have with one another

What is happening with that, is that ultimately we are

all leading to a lack of human rights

And you see, now that I refer to the issue of rights

I make an example

Esteban Navarro, who is the policeman who has written a book and has been sanctioned by him.

The time will come that if the police does not bind

And he does not see well what they have done to Esteban Navarro

It will be considered normal that a policeman can not write in a few years

As well as this channel

If this channel at the end

Humor, closeness to the citizen, all that is punished

There will come a time when it will be normal for a YouTube channel

Talking relating to police and police things

You will have to close by conservative mentality within the national police

Or things like this

And you see, I put another comparative more for you to see that I'm talking, I put another example

And my case I did Video

To help robberies at home

I did a video a year ago and 3 or 4 months or so

Speaking of how the robberies are avoided and planted here a card so that what you see

Well, it has had 1871 visits, it has not yet reached 1900

However, the video that talks about the police Twiter dancing the "Despacito"

In only four days it has reached 2670 visits

That is already saying a lot. He's talking about morbid curiosity, of disunity

He's talking about is.

You see, social networks have another language

They have another code

They have another approach to citizen

Still the police in general area

Not all, it is clear that not all ... still does not understand

With the video of "Break" is a brutal approach to citizen

An excellent job

And the example is that 4 days or 5 later, it still is talking about it

Nearest impossible

That was a real triumph by the national police

Here are two fronts ...

As seen by the police ... and as seen by the citizen

The citizen does not see him as the police, I can guarantee it

And if not, fijaros comments on my channel

No you have to go further

Clearly, a citizen sees and empathizes with agents, and laughs.

But it is also clear that a policeman with a conservative mentality

You see, ashamed and rants, and above advantage

to take all the shit that no evil

Criticizing those three officials there specifically criticizing me for the "mockery"

According to them

we have done in the channel

And to top it up, encouraging the hate, the anger, the lack constructive and that closeness.

Of course, one thing is that and another to reach disrespect

As I could see in the channel

In other words, the person who wrote me

Go fuck is that bitch

For me ... well, tell input you're locked

You are blocked and I deleted your comment, but ...

It has given me Uncle shame ... has given me ashamed

For me you can go to fry Heck, I do not care

And it says much education you have received

And also sample values

It's funny because if this person treats me my well

Then values are going to encourage citizens

Or by peers

If I made a tribute video to the police, placed cards

To encourage tribute to the police

And you say "that shit is this?"

Values you have for the national police

But I am ashamed for you

You do go wrong the other agents

I would like to think that the majority is silent

It is far easier to say: "Damn, you've done wrong, I disagree with you" ... to say ...

"Fuck you've well done" ... how cool your video!

These are the most complicated messages say

Do not know why, when something we feel bad, we are more likely to write something like that when we

Of course there are many citizens who see

See the case of Rubén Rucoba, a great friend, Youtuber well too.

Well, it is the first that shares my publications

Which I am very grateful

Comments here my friend "Hugo"

Or Esther, they make you see

there are people who have more lights

That there is light on the road

The funny thing is that in this channel following the publication of "Despacito"

I had a substantial loss of subscribers

Plus

They started coming and started to go, to come and go

We arrived at 1600, down again,

He climbed back up, down again

Surely this video again encourage again a loss of subscribers

But what really happens is that you are doing a clean on the canal, people come

oxygen

I will challenge you to find them a single video

One hundred venti many videos I have on the channel

speak ill of the security forces

or national police, just one, that's the challenge that I put

If, however, you are realizing the positive values we

That all our values are closest to the citizen

And all we are encouraging

to give knowledge and teach

So if I invite you to subscribe

A you join, to get on the boat you

A with us to improve citizenship

In everything we do in the channel is

For you, for helping older

By helping youth

Antidrug against the penal code against the current legislation

What more can I say?

If you do not see it really

I can not do anything

I do not want to give the plate more

It makes me feel good this video

I saw very necessary because it really has flushed me what happened with the national police

In social networks and such, and see

that mentality that is wrong in the times

I thank you

you have to come here because I have a good veneer glued

But ... I leave very quiet. I take many monsters I have inside, eh

We will go forward with great force, with much encouragement in the channel

Transmitting good values

We want to change things and we will get

But always with our motto

Problems for you

For we together

We'll take a good habit to recreational

Talue

Because this video is really meaningful to me.

[Project End ▶ (The Creator is) Producing Rewards ▶ Packing & Shipping the Rewards] These rewards are exclusively for our project-participants.

[Project End ▶ (The Creator is) Producing Rewards ▶ Packing & Shipping the Rewards] So you can't really find these rewards at elsewhere.

For our pledgers to receive their rewards on time, safely

We are really trying here...

And WE made pledges ourselves

THE GREAT ESCAPE | Dinner With An Owl Pt.2 (ending) - Duration: 7:59.

hello everyone it's me Jayskibean welcome back to dinner with an owl last episode

we basically found out that this game is just a big loopy loop and a never-ending

loop unless you do the right things now I'm pretty I'm pretty sure I'm pretty

sure figured it out I'm gonna go ahead my game with the creepy creepy guys

staring me down but anyway I've done some investigation well some thinking

especially while I was editing and there's a few things that I haven't

really paid much attention to and that's the umbrella stand like there's

definitely I don't need an umbrella at the moment but in most point and click

games everything that's interactable like that you its first something like

this especially a small game like this like there's got there's got to be

something um also he gives you two knives and the lady said at the end of

the last episode she said that um it's too late for him now which implies that

I need to kill him earlier in the week like earlier since I get there so I'm

thinking what I could do is this night I can get two knives I can put one knife

in the umbrella stand I can stab him with the other I can turn to an owl and

then when the next guy comes in I can grab the knife out of the umbrella stand

and go ahead and stab them so absolute abstract and I think it's gonna work

we'll find out it's my master plan mr. chambers nice to meet you mr. Craig did

you have a nice arrival yes but you look hungry but before we eat you have to

meet the other guests guests

I'd like to introduce you to mr. miss April Merritt April this is my business

partner mr. Oscar Craig I like how they have randomly generated names nice to

meet you it's a pleasure this is her daughter Josie

hello sad and you already met my Butler declawed over there very well let's have

dinner okay so we've already done all this

just want to see if my plan works honestly all right so he's gonna pop up

in the hallways knee and oh there's no one here

all right what about the umbrellas or something in there I don't need an

umbrella yeah there's nothing cool sometimes tips okay maybe I do have to

talk to him good morning mr. Craig is just hand over the contract so we can

get straight to work oh yeah we haven't even gotten to work yet okay I thought

we had like a full day maybe he was just talking about traveling

later that day enough for today we're making good progress here

see you later at dinner see you there yeah I guess Oh bye mr. hat that doesn't

work that doesn't I have to put it back okay whatever I just whatever you dude

all right so I'm gonna talk to the Kalon hey what's up decline I don't want to

toss it how may I be of service may I ask you a personal question - kalon

certainly sir have you ever thought of quitting your job excuse me did you ever

think about leaving the house it's not that easy mr. Chavous possesses people

everyone who stays here longer than a few hours falls under his spell all he

explains it I will take care of it but I need your help what should I do

oh my god he explained it I did not know that that was the thing can you provide

me with some sort of weapon well there are plenty of knives in the kitchen that

should do maybe tomorrow at this place but here are my words it may already be

too late for you to survive this situation the only way is to stop this

man would be if he was killed by someone who just arrives at this house we have

to eat dinner now okay so he even exceeded hits at it that I need to pass

the knife down mr. Craig is a tough negotiating partner but I'm confident

that we can conclude an agreement we'll find a solution for our problem soon

after dinner okay okay now I get to talk to dick lon

chance you're our only chance Oscar don't worry it'll be over soon I'm

afraid that may already be too late it is for Oscar just got to trust in the

next guy alright I'm gonna go to the office

hey mr. chambers you've got to work on something different at the moment please

come again later okay say yeah see you dude don't pop up okay didn't he popped

up once and he's saying really weird song here it is can you give me one more

knife here you go all right now what I'm gonna do is I'm going to thank you -

come on be prepared to leave this house soon I'm sure hope so mr. Craig okay so

I'm gonna take the knife and I'm going to put it in the umbrella stand

aha let me do it I concealed a knife inside the umbrella Stan okay cool good

stuff so now I can go stab him right when we're going to stab stab stab Aroo

all right mr. chambers meet your demise yep

Oh oh my god oh it's all bassy I like how it explained the spells oh that's

really cool like I mean obviously I kind of figured since last time can we really

leave now mommy I think it's already too late for him

and here we go turn into an owl and the clones gonna be like now I'm so thirsty

no not again I'm so thirsty let's have dinner oh man

wonder if my randomly generated name is welcome mr. Doyle mr. Craig is already

waiting for you you will find him Dennis office down the hallway thank you very

much have a pleasant stay so given there's a knife hidden inside the

umbrella stand I think I'll take it and stab him ha ha ha

oh yeah I feel like this got to be it this has got to be the way

I'm stab you mr. Craig shabby right in the little bitty heart oh yeah I don't

did it I did it that's gotta be it I'm good

this will first night I just got here let's get out of here can we really

leave now mommy yes my dear this creature won't detain us any longer

so what is it we can leave this nightmare so what is the creature is it

actually it never looked back are they all going to bow you managed to escape

after 10 days I love the soundtrack of this game is so

good so that was dinner with an owl and that was the actual ending to the game

which is awesome the game by boring suburban dad it's really good and really

well done um she's so loud though it's made with the inches that I've never

seen before - it's really cool I can't I want to see more games from this guy

like I'm pretty sure he has more games the developer but I don't know expect to

see more if it comes out with more if ready has more I really like this oh and

that's the song right there black cat 13 by basset hound spooky piano is probably

the one playing and feeling for twilight is probably the bounty of our Ripper but

anyway I hope you guys enjoyed that ending it was pretty cool I liked how I

figured that out in my own time anyway if you guys did enjoy make sure you slap

that like button underneath the video and until next time I'll see you guys

Crowdfunding Campaign - Baile An Salsa A MultiCultural Message - Duration: 2:36.

Hello Everyone

We are Baile An Salsa from Galway, Ireland

We are ten friends

from seven different countries

and today

we want to ask you to be part

of our multicultural music project

Almost five years ago

on a summer evening

we had this crazy idea of mixing

Irish Traditional Music

with Latin Music

After a Salsa gig in Galway

Few of us on the salsa band

went for a "wonder"

to the nearby pub

We went in and there was an Irish Traditional music session taking place

And so with the Salsa grooves and rhythms still very lively on our minds

we sat in and start to listen to the Irish Traditional Music

something started to happen

maybe it was the atmosphere

more likely the was the few beers we had

but , suddenly all of the groove started to combine

and a great idea was born

Their first reaction was:

Right on the first day we wrote Irish Plena

and call it "The Luck of the Irish"

but before long

the song went staright

to the Late Late Show

When i first came to Ireland

The thing that caught my attention

is that i see this word

That in Spanish we say "BAILE"

but it was the Irish "BAILE"

and it was written everywhere

It was written in the car registrations

it was written in the airport

it was written in the buses

and i got very excited about seeing this word

everywhere! ...

the word BAILE in spanish

litteraly means to dance

but in irish where our name comes from

it means town or home

So it translate as:

For the last five years

we performed at some amazing Festivals

all around the world

and we made some great friends there too

Our music is the message

of respecting , sharing and mixing our traditions

a message of positive MultiCulturalism around the world

we love this country

and respect it's traditions

and we believe we can give something back

At the moment

we're working on our second album

and this time will be more MultiCultural

than ever

we are even mixing

Colombian Cumbia with Irish Jigs

Yes we are

And to help us delivering our message

in the best possible way

we have joining our team

a very special person

thank you very much

Oh

It's Been An Amazing Week For The Gospel : Vacation Bible School - Duration: 2:00.

I hope you're having a great summer. I can tell you that it's been an amazing

one so far. It's been a very busy one for sure! This week, on this campus, we have

had Vacation Bible School. And we are seeing over 1400 children on this campus

every morning. It is absolutely amazing to see the life! It's just like our

worship room is teeming with life and all over the campus. And I think I have

high fived all 1,400 of them! So maybe I ought to wash this hand at some point.

But it's been awesome! I have just loved meeting parents, welcoming people, we have

new people that have never been in our church. But they heard about Vacation Bible School.

And then we've had folks that have been here but didn't know much about us, and

this week has been an opportunity for them to learn about us. But most

importantly, it's been an awesome week for the Gospel. Because every day, both in

worship and in their small group times, they've been learning about Jesus. And I

just know that the fruit of this week is going to be eternal. So, man what a great

week. We're going to show actually this weekend a little bit of a recap, and you

don't want to miss that! And you don't miss this weekend. This weekend is a

special celebration of the fourth of July, even though it's not the fourth. But

we're going to talk about freedom! You know we're in the Gospel of Mark and

there's a passage in there that talks about the Sabbath, and how that the

Sabbath..we weren't made for the Sabbath.. but the Sabbath was made for us. In other

words, it was a gift that God gave us to be used. You ever thought of that freedom

being a gift that God gave you to be used, not just for you, but for the

Gospels sake? We're going to talk about that this weekend, you don't want to miss it.

Hope you have a great summer and I pray that everything is going great so far!

Thank you for your prayers, thank you for your support, and may the Lord bless you

as we continue to journey together.

China is insecure about India's rapid rise as an Economic and Military Power - Duration: 7:26.

Welcome to WARN, Do you think China is insecure about India's rapid rise

as an Economic and Military Power

China has once again blocked Indias application for membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group

(NSG).

At the 27th plenary session of the NSG, held at Bern on 22-23 June 2017, China continued

to insist that the group should formulate the criteria for the admission of new members

first, before making exceptions for any country.

China holds the view that NSG membership should be given to Pakistan as well along with India,

despite latters abysmal record as the worlds worst proliferator.

It is also expected that Chinas technical hold on Masood Azhar, head of the Pakistan-based

terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), being designated an international terrorist

by the United Nations sanctions committee, will continue.

Although India was finally admitted as a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

(SCO) at the Astana summit on 9 June 2017, China made sure that Pakistan was given the

same status simultaneously.

Chinas Insecurities ::

In the past, China has objected to Indias Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC)

prospecting for oil off the coast of Vietnam after winning a contract from its government,

even though the area was within Vietnams territorial waters.

China, of course, claims the complete South China Sea as its territorial waters in complete

disregard of the Law of the Sea treaty.

Chinas leadership hardly misses an opportunity to express its discomfiture with India over

inconsequential issues.

For example, in March 2017, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying it was

strongly dissatisfied with India for inviting the Dalai Lama to open an international

Buddhist conference in Nalanda, Bihar.

Beijing protested even more loudly when the Dalai Lama visited Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh

a few weeks later.

Waging War Through Media ::

The Chinese state-controlled media have made it a habit to periodically warn India of dire

consequences on one pretext or another.

A few examples from the Global Times, a Communist Party-controlled English language newspaper,

should suffice to show Chinas efforts to raise the ante through media.

A commentary in the paper earlier this year warned India not to meddle as Chinas

defence minister visited Nepal and Sri Lanka.

A recent editorial threatened to engage India in a geopolitical game.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - With a GDP several times higher than that

of India, military capabilities that can reach the Indian Ocean and having good relations

with Indias peripheral nations, coupled with the fact that Indias turbulent northern

state borders China, if China engages in a geopolitical game with India, will Beijing

lose to New Delhi?

- The Global Times editorial - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The turbulent northern state clearly refers to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

- - - - - - - - - - - - - China has shown no concern for Indian sensitivities

while finalising plans for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) that will pass through

Gilgit-Baltistan, an area that is part of J&K, but under Pakistani occupation.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Indias refusal to participate in President Xi Jinpings Belt and Road Forum a summit-level

meeting prompted the Global Times to warn India once again that its short-sighted attitude

could damage Sino-Indian relations.

On other occasions, the Global Times has warned India to resist the temptation of resorting

to protectionism, in a bid to shield local mobile phone makers and threatened to

take counter measures; and, advised India not to play the Taiwan card.

After India had tested the Agni 4 ballistic missile, an editorial pointed out ominously

that if the development of long-range missiles by India continues, The range of Pakistan's

nuclear missiles will also see an increase.

Most recently, commenting on the establishment of the India-Afghanistan direct air freight

corridor (Pakistan denies India access to Afghanistan through the land route), the Global

Times called the plan Indias stubborn geopolitical thinking.

China is deeply suspicious of the growing Indo-US strategic partnership and on the eve

of Prime Minister Modis meeting with President Donald Trump, it said that a close watch would

be kept on discussions that follow.

Superioirty Complex ::

Clearly, despite a stable relationship at the strategic level, China is annoyed with

India and the reason is not difficult to discern.

China thinks of itself as a great power and, as part of its grand strategy, seeks to dominate

the region and gain geo-political influence.

Also, the Chinese leadership believes in Chinas political, social and cultural superiority

over its neighbours.

In short, the Chinese believe that their civilisation is far superior to the civilisations of its

neighbours.

According to a Chinese saying, One mountain can accommodate only one tiger. The Chinese

look at themselves as the tiger on the Asian mountain and there is no place for a second

tiger like India.

If India were to play second fiddle, there would be more frequent noise around the deceptively

enthralling slogan of the 1950s: Hindi-Chini, bhai-bhai.

Indias Defence Strategy ::

India is conscious that Chinas growing power and influence pose a long-term strategic

challenge for the entire Indo-Pacific region.

However, India is itself growing at a rapid rate and is confident of closing the gap quickly.

Resurgent India, poised at a breakout moment in its history, looks at itself as an equal

power in Asia a rising power that is conscious of its regional responsibilities and increasingly

more willing to contribute positively to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and

the security of the global commons.

The China-India geo-political stand-off is a clash of two competing worldviews and will

not end any time soon.

China is engaged in the strategic encirclement of India through its proxies like Pakistan

and its string of pearls strategy in the northern Indian Ocean.

In the South China Sea dispute as well, China has exhibited extremely belligerent attitude.

To counter Chinas increasing military assertiveness, India should join hands with the United States

and other strategic partners, such as Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam,

to establish a cooperative security framework for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

And, as long as the territorial dispute with China is not resolved and transgressions by

patrols from the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) continue across the Line of Actual Control,

India should keep its powder dry.

As for the membership of the NSG, India should be ready to fight a long battle ahead.

【ART VS. ILLUSTRATION】Thoughts of an Art Student - Duration: 13:46.

A month ago I uploaded my video about my experience on studying art.

I am so happy about the large amount of of feedback I received, even if it is sad that

so many of you had the same or similar experience.

But I figured that some people misunderstood the point that I was trying to make.

It was not about bashing studying art or art itself.

Not at all.

I said it in the beginning of the video that I define art as something that can be projected

onto anything by anyone.

I see it as a category under which people can discuss anything in a certain way and

achieve perspectives and thoughts they probably would have never had if that wasn't possible.

Just because - in my opinion - you are able to call anything art, that doesn't mean you

have to like everything.

Not everyone has to give a piece the same value.

It is up to the observer.

But if more people like it, that means there is a market on which it is valuable.

If the right people like it, it might even be displayed in a museum because there is

another market for that as well.

There are a lot of conditions to consider what makes something valuable (Name,Look,Execution

etc.)

In short: Art is a term to classify an object or performance and make it comparable with

other things under that same perspective.

Rating that object or performance good or bad is something that happens after that attribution

was made.

It's important for me to see it this way, so I won't get angry when - for example - I

visit a museum, because I can accept something I don't like as a part of the art category,

but I am still an independent human being who can decide to like it or not, to give

it value or not.

While I am super grateful that most of you watched the whole video and understood what

I said, I feel the need to make this video because there were a lot of people as well

who were not really getting my point or even misinterpreting it.

So I chose some comments that summarize some accusations I found the most, and elaborate

on what made me come to the conclusion that art isn't as superior as some people would

like to think.

Most common question Why am I studying art and not illustration?

From what I've learned from my brother, who is studying illustration and design, he

made very similar experiences.

The difference between the two seems to be that illustration and design openly talk about

the market they are working for, while in art I always get to hear "Do what interests

you", "Question things", "Break conventions".

But in reality, they judge your work by the demand of the art market.

The rough point of my video was, that art likes to deny that such a market exists and

that it shapes the way people judge the work of others, especially how Professors judge

art students.

If everyone was more open about it when giving feedback, you'd know what you would be working

towards.

But keep in mind: I am studying art to become a teacher.

What I expected to learn in that regard is a topic for a whole nother video.

But considering that, ...

In the beginning I thought I could work freely, and unaffected by museums, exhibitions or

an art market in general.

But I figured out quickly, that as a teacher apparently my work would be to justify and

sell the art on the market to future students.

So after all my work is still rated after the standards of the art market.

Last but not least, to get into art you need a qualification, which you get through a portfolio

and an exam.

I applied to both design and art.

Design declined me twice, art accepted me ;)

Next up is a longer comment.

Pause the video to read it in full.

But I'll highlight the relevant parts that I'll talk about.

If I had wanted to get compliments at uni I would've taken some stains on paper plus

an esoteric explanation with me, like everyone else there.

I was prepared for a negative reaction, that it wouldn't be accepted.

What bothered me was the behaviour and the kind of questions I had to deal with.

But I also said that I took it with me because they wanted to see what I was working on in

my private life.

That was their specific request.

I wasn't whining about being criticized in the first place, I mentioned that to illustrate

the contrast between my private work and what I do for Uni.

And of course to demonstrate how absurd and random the feedback was.

But more importantly, the point of the video was to question the common believe, that art

was automatically better than just pretty things.

People accuse illustration to just exist for the sake of being pretty and catch attention

on the illustration market.

But a similar accusation can be made about art being created for the sake of being art

and thus sell on the art market.

The difference is that illustration can be more objectively rated based on the craft,

skills and purpose at least.

To understand art you often have to swallow what people tell you without questioning.

I mean, you can question those things, but be prepared to make enemies.

It's simply an unpopular thing to do.

You say it's more than that.

I just wish the people who grade me would get that step right.

I don't really get your point.

Not that I disagree, because art, in order to sell, definitely needs an added value.

What bugs me is what makes people think they can just judge using phrases like "Oh it's

pretty and so there is not story behind it", while swallowing every tiny piece of crap

that they are told when they look at, say, folded towels in a museum.

That's quite a double standard: You absolutely cannot tell, only guess, what the story behind

these towels is by just looking at them.

Nor can you really do so for the painting I did.

In that regard there is no difference between art and illustration, only prejudice.

But it goes further: Every person can gets something else out of an art piece.

One person might brush it off as just some towels, someone else might see something in

them that no-one else can.

At that point it doesn't even matter anymore whether the artist actually had anything in

mind.

Furthermore, the argument fails when talking about movements like Dadaism, or Art Brut,

where drawings and paintings were created by laypeople, children and patients of psychiatric

hospitals which were later declared and sold as art by Jean Dubuffets.

It's just like Joseph Beuys said: "Everyone is an artist".

We are at a point where it's pointless to say something's not art because we should

know by now that it heavily depends on Zeitgeist, what gets praised and what gets trashed.

The past has shown us again and again, and it's always the same mistake.

Again: Just because something's pretty doesn't mean that it's unsubstantial.

The other side of the coin is that just because somethings ugly, you can't assume there

is automatically some added intellectual value.

In art it is has somehow become mainstream to portray ugly people, because the art market

is buying it.

And of course, if the market wants it, then do it, but stop claiming that ugly is automatically

innovative or more authentic than pretty.

But what is ugly and pretty anyway?

Isn't that in the eye of the beholder?

All I want to say is: Develope your own taste and don't let people tell you something

is more worthy to be liked.

You are independent, make up your own mind.

If you still come to your conclusion, then that's fine.

But do so without any preconceived notions ingrained by any authority, or just to supposedly

separate yourself from one mainstream, only to land in another one.

I study to become a teacher.

A teacher in my opinion should have the authority to teach, and therefore it would be beneficial

if a teacher was able to argue artistic decisions out of choice and not out of inability.

Unfortunately, nowadays I experienced that when studying art, you learn absolutely nothing

that enables you to actually improve your skills.

There is no challenge.

You bring yourself and from moment on you just learn to sell yourself.

The only way to improve is learning drawing and painting privately, but risks are high

that your work looks too good aka like an illustration.

Then you have to downscale your skill to make it look like art.

I have actually been fairly successful so far, because as it turns out, it's really

easy to work on concepts of art if nobody rates the execution.

That is why I want to make people question: "Do I like these stains on canvas because

it was sold to me by an industry that is believed to be about real personal authentic expression,

while on the other hand the same industry dictates a strict line of what is art and

what's not?"

It's not about bashing anything.

But I just think it is unfair to bash illustration as something anyone could do and present art

as higher authority.

Thank you!

While I'm very grateful you liked that work of mine I still wonder:

You were accusing me of drawing that pretty painting just for the sake of being pretty

and appealing to the masses, assuming there is no story behind it.

At the same time I explicitly told you in the video that this painting that you love

has absolutely no story, no personality behind it.

I put no effort into it and it was just done for the artsy people at my uni to like.

I might understand now why modern art is so popular nowadays.

I hope I could show you that sometimes illustration and art can both be done in a calculated manner.

Both are markets.

A lot of artists are getting praised years after they died.

Not because their art suddenly changed but the demand and taste of the market.

People were listening to authorities and not to their own taste.

I did an experiment in my second semester.

I had a different prof where I took paintings with me that you can see on screen right now.

Those were criticized massively and I was directed to change.

Two weeks later I still had them hanging around because I used them as reference for a next

project and suddenly the same teacher asked me why I wouldn't want pursue that direction

more, because they had potential and reminded them of Baselitz (who, by the way, said some

horrible things about female artist but is still a highly regarded personality.

But that's another topic).

So my profs often have absolutely no idea themselves what they are looking for.

More importantly they are also not looking for uniqueness, since you need to drop names

that influenced you in order to survive and sell.

It's actually the other way around, if you wanted to be unique studying art just do manga,

the fewest do it because everyone knows how dangerous it is and you will come out of it

with a stronger personality because everyone will discourage you from doing it.

What kind of world would we live in if some people were born being able to express themselves

and others could never achieve that?

I think expressing yourself isn't even something you would need to learn, it's very intuitive

if you look at preschool art.

The hard part is the execution, to create something that truly represents your thoughts

or feelings.

How you rate it, if it moves you or not is personal taste which you have every right

to but if you can't appreciate the story behind realistic paintings because you want

to concentrate on the accuracy, then I guess it's not the artist fault.

Last but not least I want to treat you with a few examples to illustrate what made me

question the art industry.

Sources will be in the description.

It's stuff that I came across while studying for university.

So when people tell me why my work isn't art and they hold up glorified standards of

authenticity and added values, I just recommend to do some research if those values are actually

true or not and what practice you are actually trying to defend.

There are prominent examples that should make you question art authorities.

Objects that were mistaken for art, art that has been destroyed by cleaning personnel,

because they didn't identify it as art.

Or even people that sell invisible art.

Those are stories that maybe some of you have heard of.

But I want to give you some concrete examples.

Richard Prince, an artist who got famous for photographing an already existing photograph

by swiss photographer Hannes Schmid and selling it for 1 Million, and a another one from the

same series for 3.4 Million.

Furthermore, in 2015 he took pictures of instagram posts to print them in canvas size and sell

them, giving no royalties to the original artists.

So Facebook is not the only one you should worry about using your pictures ;)

Roy lichtenstein is also very famous for taking comic panels by comic artists without giving

credit or royalties and turning them into paintings.

To make it even more spicy, in 2010 Manager of Intellectual Property for the Estate of

Roy Lichtenstein accused Elsinore Music of copyright infringement while there were just

using the same source material for their album cover art.

Why isn't that labeled plagiarism you ask?

The legitimacy comes from illustration being degraded to "not art", which frames this

process as a transformation, instead of a copy.

I am not sure why it would add uniqueness and authenticity, when an established artist

basically rips off one of these illustrations and put it on canvas, when the original artists

never had the chance to declare their work art in the first place, because they have

no authority.

Art people might argue they took "low art" illustration and turning it into "high art"

without even mentioning the market behind all of it.

But I smell double standards and injustice by the action to call one thing art and exclude

something else.

Duchamps toilet should have already made clear that art is a perspective and not a rating.

So again I cannot tell you what to consider art but all I can do is ask you to think for

yourself.

I could go on with more examples, but I am happy you listened to me for this long already,

so I am going to stop here.

Since I received a lot of comments about comfort zones, I want to talk about that topic as

well so I am probably going to make some similar videos in the future.

Anyway I hoped you like it or found it interesting and I hope to see you next time :)

Student Loan Defaults: An Economic Train Wreck For Taxpayers - Duration: 6:42.

More than one million people defaulted on their student loans last year, compared to

just 400,000 the year before.

Overall, student loan debt has reached nearly $1.5 trillion.

That's equal to the entire GDP of Canada.

There's no question this crisis is spiraling out of control for students that are unable

to pay back the increasingly outrageous college tuition prices.

If the current default rate continues, we're looking at 25% of all borrowers actually defaulting

on their loans by next mid-term election.

So is there any way out of this problem?

Joining me now to talk about it, is Adam Minsky, he's an attorney who specializes in student

loan cases.

Adam, what are the main reasons that student loan debt, this is an incredible number, $1.5

trillion, really?

How has it gotten there?

Yeah, it's certainly a combination of factors.

I think part of it is the runaway increases in tuition at both private and public institutions.

I think part of it as well, is the increased access to borrowing, both in terms of private

and federal loans, coupled with a withdrawal of public investment in higher education,

which has shifted the financial burden and responsibilities onto borrowers and their

families.

According to a new report by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, complaints to

the Bureau about student loans have increased by about, I think the number's 325%, that's

just between March of 2016 and I think, February of 2017.

Why do you think that is?

What's going on out there?

Because I got to tell you something, the typical American doesn't know that we have a bubble

that is potentially bigger even, than the last bubble that we went through with real

estate.

What is your take?

In terms of those complaints, they're almost entirely against servicers.

Servicers are often not the actual lender.

This is certainly true of federal student loans where the lender is often the Department

of Education, which then farms out the servicing operations to some private companies that

then handle borrower accounts.

A lot of the complaints are against those types of companies that handle borrower accounts

on behalf of the original lender.

Servicing in the student loan world, has been an absolute mess, to be quite frank, since

I started doing this work many years ago.

I think the reason for the recent spike is simply because the Consumer Financial Protection

Bureau has been doing more and more high profile work in this area, and people have become

more aware of the existence of the CFPB and its complaint system.

And so I don't think it's necessarily an indication that things are worse with student loan servicing,

they've been bad for quite a while, I think it's indicative of the fact that people now

have a place where they can go to file a complaint.

Well there are about eight million Americans that are now in default on their student loans,

last number I saw.

What are the legal options?

What options do they have to get back on track, whether they hold a private or a public loan?

What can these people do?

Because you're hearing constantly this problem seems to be getting worse and worse, so what

does a person do if they're holding a loan like that?

It really does depend on the type of student loan that the borrower has.

For federal student loans, which comprise the vast majority of that 1.4 or $1.5 trillion

in outstanding student debt, there are statutory options available to borrowers that allow

them to resolve their defaults.

There is usually two different options, they can rehabilitate their loans, which is a temporary

payment plan tied to the borrower's income and financial circumstances.

In some cases borrowers can also take out a federal consolidation loan, which resolves

the default in the course of combining their loans into one.

Borrowers might also be able to settle, although federal student loan settlements can be quite

expensive.

For private student loans, there usually are not options to rehabilitate, with some exceptions,

and you can't take out a federal consolidation loan to pay off defaulted private loans.

So borrowers who have defaulted private loans often have fewer options that usually involve

some sort of settlement arrangement or raising defenses to a collections action, for instance,

if the lender waits too long to sue them, they might be able to raise a defense based

on the statute of limitations.

Sometimes there are defenses based on inability to produce proper documentation, but there

is no statutory way out of default.

Adam, let me move on.

Senators like Elizabeth Warren, they claim that the government makes tens of billions

of dollars in profit off of student loans, and then on top of that, they make it impossible

for a student to get out from underneath, by declaring bankruptcy for a student loan.

Is this an exaggeration or is there something to this?

Are these numbers right?

First of all, tens of billions of dollar that the government's making and they won't help

pay for a college education for the average American, did I get that right?

Yeah, I'm not familiar with the specific numbers in terms of the budget, but I know that the

government does view the student loan system as a revenue generating system.

And so they are looking at it to make money, and if you talk to many student loan borrowers,

they will tell you that even while they've made many payments, they may not have even

touched the principal balance of the loans, because of the way that interest works.

And so I certainly think that borrowers are paying back several times what they originally

took out in debt, and of course that's all profit from the government's perspective.

Well I got to tell you Adam, thanks for joining me on this, but I want to tell you, my take

on it is, that taxpayers are going to end up footing this bill when everything collapses.

On top of that, the Trump administration has proposed budget calls for de-funding the public

service loan forgiveness program, so you add that to what's happening here, and all of

a sudden we're looking at the same kind of bubble that people have been warning about,

that we saw with real estate, 2008.

I think people who don't believe this affects them, really need to take a more serious look

at this, because it certainly does have a huge effect on what they may have to pay as

taxpayers when this bubble, when this whole thing that the government has created, understand,

the government has created this problem, when it all collapses, taxpayers are going to end

up having to foot the bill.

Thanks for joining me Adam.

Thank you.
