ME researchers study energy efficient way to separate hydrogen from water - Duration: 3:01.

My general research interest focuses on the unique material property and phenomena in

nanoscale and how can we utilize these unique properties and phenomena to make our energy

sector of the economy more efficient and impact more people.

So what I'm showing you there is a process to produce hydrogen using a process called

water electrolysis.

What is does it apply voltage to two electrodes in the water.

One electrode will produce oxygen and the other will produce hydrogen.

One of the main challenges is that it needs to use a very expensive catalyst based on

platinum.

As you know, platinum is a rare earth element.

So what we are looking at is how we can make a nanomaterial catalyst that has a comparable

performance to the expensive, platinum-based catalyst.

So the overall goal is to lower the cost of the water electrolysis process using an earth

abundant element catalyst.

So the way we discovered the iron-nickel catalyst was with the help of computational material

science so we collaborated with computational material scientists and they use a computer

program to calculate how much energy is needed for this specific set of catalysts to produce

hydrogen.

Everything is on paper and using their calculation we were able to predict the combination of

iron and nickel that is the best in terms of saving energy when producing hydrogen.

Then we take the element and we optimize the ratio of these two elements in our material

synthesis process.

If we use a lot less energy to produce hydrogen that will make hydrogen a very competitive

fuel.

It will make people more willing to use hydrogen-based energy devices, for example hydrogen fuel

cells.

So I know Iowa is a big agriculture state so we produce a lot of biomass.

The currently project I'm working on also looks at how this catalyst can be used to

convert biomass into fuel like ethanol or even more value-added chemicals.

This project has been going for a year and we already produced two papers.

I think the reason why we were successful here was because I think this project was

half driven by myself and half driven by my student.

My student was heavily involved in the idea development phase of this project.

I think that's one lesson I learned from this project is being able to involve the

student in the idea development phase as much as possible and then the student will feel

they're the owner of this research and they're more motivated and self-driven to work on

this project.
