what's up shenanigans John here welcome back to the channel
normally I talk to you guys about the positive things that help your channel
but today a little different I'm gonna talk to you about the things that I did
that absolutely almost killed this channel to be completely transparent I'm
not even sure that these things won't completely demolish this channel in the
future I have no idea now if this is your first time here please make sure
that you click the subscribe button and hit that Bell so you get notifications
when we release videos if you enjoyed this video make sure that you hit the
thumbs up when I first started vlogging the the video quality was horrible I
knew nothing about vlogging I had a GoPro hero3 and it was absolutely
horrible the sound was bad people will put up with a lot the sound is horrible
people will absolutely tune out I told you guys before that I started this
channel as a running channel to begin with and then I transitioned into a
vlogging channel a family vlogging channel to be precise to be successful
on YouTube you need to do a couple of things and the first one is you have to
provide value first being you have to have some sort of quality the second you
have to have value I added no value there are hundreds of thousands of
family vloggers what was making me stand out what value was I providing someone
was it entertaining I venture to say probably wasn't very entertaining other
than just to our family we all like to believe that our family is funny and
engaging and everyone would just love to see all the cool things that we do that
is not always the case that kind of leads me into the who cares category
Idina day who cared if you didn't know me if you weren't my family and if you
weren't some of you the handful of you that are still here who started from me
from the beginning as cares I had not come from a background where somebody
knew who I was wasn't like a KC nice that where I did a bunch of things
before I got on the YouTube Peter McKinnon who had a film background
when he first started to hit the ground absolutely just killing the game because
he knew how to actually do this perfectly and he made friends really
really quickly with the likes of Casey Neistat that
helped explode them even more this channel doesn't have that didn't
have a thin it doesn't have it now the only thing I've really increased is
trying to increase the value that I'm adding in the quality of the channel so
far being honest here guys you have to stand out in all this noise I've talked
about the enormity of YouTube and this platform is huge and there is plenty of
space for you and I to grow out here but how do you stand out the noise to be
successful you're going to have to do that you're gonna have to be able to
stand out and all this noise you have to be unique I have to be the best me I
possibly can be I can't be a manufacturer low-rent Casey and I stat
are saying with Peter McKinnon I can't just copy what he does and be successful
what is it about you what is it about me that will drive people to the channel
making them want to come back that quality that value that I'm adding and
making them care why do they care to come back why do they click on this
video and come back and watch me I know at the end of the day people say this is
about thumbnails and titles and I completely agree on those SEO is
extremely important but what's going to get that person to come back after
they've watched that video that one time that one time I got them to look at that
title and that one time they saw that thumbnail and they click on it they
watch it what are they taking away from that are they gonna come back and I know
from the beginning of this I didn't really provide that and again at the end
the day why is anyone gonna care I'm not flying around in a jet I'm not
skateboarding around New York hopping on jets flying around the country having
all these famous friends not meeting with all these famous people not doing
all these really cool things how do I make that interesting now Peter McKinnon
says it doesn't really matter about what you're doing and there's plenty of
people out here on this platform that prove that it's not about the cars and
the flying around and the creative film angles it's making that connection with
someone you have to make that connection you have to help them care you have to
make you have to help them want to come back you have to help them click on that
video every time you release one thing I did that probably led me to lose the
interest of many of the folks who were with me from the beginning was the
consistency you know no value no no quality no consistency that's gonna
be the formula to drive people away from your channel and I know because I did it
consistency on this platform is so hard when you're trying to up your quality
and you're trying to up your value and be consistent that takes time
you're know you're learning you're having to produce content and it's as
hard especially when you have a family you have a job it's extremely difficult
to provide all of those things on a consistent basis and if you can't be
consistent enough to have them depend on your content it's gonna be extremely
difficult it's like a TV show the TV show was just randomly put out every
couple months I mean I get mad at the Game of Thrones because I got to wait
like a year between these freaking seasons all of these things kind of
build on each other no quality no value nobody care i was not standing out in
all of the noise was it being consistent and that led to trying to fix all that
and trying to do too much and burning myself out I would spend a month
cranking out videos you know doing a March Madness or something like that and
then would burn out and then I wouldn't love but once or twice every three weeks
and then people would stop looking for your videos and you lose your engagement
and I've even seen that a little bit here recently I was putting out videos
pretty steadily since November and I got to a point where things started getting
busy and I only released a couple videos over the last couple weeks
that's the detrimental if it was purposeful if you're like Peter McKinnon
you released once a week people come to know that that's what you're doing but
if you're cranking out consistent content like I was and then I stopped
and only release one video in a week I think that hurts the engagement while
you may over saturate the market and that's what I was afraid I was doing so
I tried to back off to a little bit it's a tough balance so from the very
beginning and the first two years I'd say the things that hurt this channel
the most were again the the low quality of what I was doing because I was trying
to do too much not helping people care now give him the why not standing out in
the crowd not standing out on all of the noise on YouTube being consistent and
then trying to do too much to make up for all of it and
just burning myself out those are the things I believe that probably led to
the very slow growth of this channel and could ultimately lead to the death of
the channel now I say I want to diversify this channel I don't know what
that means at the end of the day for what's going to happen to the channel if
I continue vlogging if I continue these type of videos right here these type of
videos seem to do much better than my vlogging channel but the whole reason I
do this is because of the vlogging creating the historical record for me
and my family and making it entertaining and doing it in a artistic way that's
why I do this I do this because I want to interact with you guys and pass on
the knowledge that I've gained over the last three or so years so what's in
store for this channel I don't know I have no idea I know I've evolved over
the last three years I have no idea where things are gonna go I'm liking
where the channel is right now I'm liking the growth that we're having I'm
like in the engagement that I'm getting but I have to find my rhythm I have to
find a schedule I have to be more consistent I know I need to come up with
a schedule I've been saying this for years if it's Monday Wednesday Friday
it's Mondays and Fridays Mondays in Wednesday's I don't know I have to do
that I have to do that for you guys and I have to do that for me if I'm gonna
continue on with this channel and if I want to be successful I need to treat it
like something I want to be successful I know I've preached that and I now need
to own that and do it myself I need to be consistent I need to set a schedule
and I hope you all will help hold me accountable on that because I don't like
letting three four or five days go by without releasing a video
I hate being disappointed to myself for not releasing a video because I have the
ideas it's a matter of coming down and sometimes if I'm not passionate about
the topic I'm like there's no way anybody's gonna be passionate about that
and it could just be my mood at the time and sometimes these things I write down
there Desai Diaz and I'd feel very passionate about my book right here by
the way I feel very passionate about these things but just depending on how
tired I am or how I feel it could make my new to do this and make me not want
to do this so I don't want to try to do too much
and burn myself out and do the things I think that have caused this channel to
struggle over the first two two-and-a-half years now I know many of
you are struggling and trying to find your voice trying to find who you are on
YouTube comment below let me know what you guys think let me know what you guys
think of this channel here really the feedback helps me tremendously I've
gotten more feedback from you guys in the last two three months then I've
gotten in the past three years it's been so beneficial you guys have been
fantastic I appreciate you all very very much so thank you all for watching and
until next time I'll see you guys
