hello hello my name is Markesa and I wanted to talk to you a little bit about
a topic today that I get asked about frequently and so the topic is just...
how do I get deep in my quiet time? how do I read the Bible effectively? you know and
Bible illiteracy is something that is rampant in our generation today.
i think a lot of times it's the older generation they're more well versed than
we are, they know their Bibles, they've read their Bibles, and have scriptures
memorized and then when it comes to the younger generation we're just Bible
illiterate and this is something that's really plaguing our younger generation
and so I get asked quite frequently, " how do I get deep into the Bible?"
" I don't get deep understanding from the scriptures should I just start in
Genesis?" you know and so that's something for me I tried to do when I was younger
I tried to read through Genesis and just read from Genesis all the way to
Revelation and I got bored and I didn't understand anything and I quit you know
and so I almost never suggest people to start in Genesis I always suggest people
to start in the book of John and so the purpose for that is because you can
really just see Jesus' life you know and then in the latter chapters of John
it talks about how the whole entire purpose of the book is to give you
things and so starting the book of John read that from start to finish that
would be my suggestion for you um now to move on to deeper Bible study I kind of
get deep in the Bible it's it's nice to just read the Bible like a story but
it's also really cool to be able to apply it to your life and there's many
different ways you can do that I want to cover for today in this video um so the
first one is gonna be a word study the second is a topical study the third is
going to be a historical study and the fourth is going to be a cultural study
I'll probably spend the most time on the first two because they they do seem a
little bit similar but you're gonna understand that they are different as I
go through and explain them so the first one um with a word study for example you
can use the word love you know and so um
in English we just have one word the word love you know and we use it for
everything I love my coffee and I love my mom and I love my dog and I love in
and out you know and we use the same word love for all of those things
so obviously the way that I love my mom is nothing in comparison to the way that
I love in and out or cake you know and so um I think it's it's not very clear
you know when we only use that one word with the Greek language has six
different words that they use to describe love and they're all
drastically different and so in the Bible the Bible uses about three of
those recorders and we need to know which one that the Bible is talking
about to really gain deep understanding on a passage you know if you read a
passage and a husband would love in it it's like okay but what type of love is
this talking about in decreasing so the three ones that use those in the Greek
are the words "eros, felos, and agape" now eros love is like a passionate love a
sensual love the love between a husband and a wife right the word filos this is
like a friendly love a brotherly love you know it's your best friend right
here you love them to death right? and then you have agape love and agape
love is self-sacrificing love and this is the type of love that we see in
parents with their children like it doesn't matter how exhausted you are
you'll get up in the middle of the night at your kid needs you you know and it's
the same type of love that we see with Jesus when he washed the feet of the
disciples and again of course when he died on the cross for us. . . and so it
really does matter which which word the Bible is using when and it describes the
word love here you know the the passage that says love your neighbor I'm hoping
that it's not eros you know and it's not don't worry but that would be weird
right if it was like it eros okay so this passionate sensual love like I'm
supposed to love all my neighbors like that that's weird you know but that's
not what the Bible is talking about and so it's it's so imperative that we get
deep and we understand what it really meant in that language and so the second
study that I want to go through is a topical study and this I'm gonna use the same word the word "love" as an example so you can see the difference between a
would study in a topical study now with the topical study let's say once again
with the word love for example um you can look up different ways on how to
love so you can look up how God loves us, how we should love God, how we should
the lost how we should love our neighbors our enemies ourselves you know
and so we can look up on a much wider range of information here love and what
that entails you know and so this this can be a really important type of study
when you're struggling with a certain type of sin like let's say anger you
know you're like man like I just I'm an angry person and I can fly off with the
handle great there's this really cool tool
that's in the Bible that can help you you know and it's called it's a concordence
there most of time in study Bibles all the way in the back and it just goes
through different words in the new canvas it gives you scriptures like on
that topic obviously it's not like an exhaustive you know concordance it
doesn't have all of them but it has a lot that you can go to and it's like
okay it's it's got three or four different scriptures that will help you
on that topic you know and so this is cool because then you can look up you
know like how to deal with your anger you can look up how God views anger you
can look up you know how how to hate anger as a sin itself you know how not
to sin in your anger you know just these different types of things where it's
very different um all of those studies topically but it's all in the same word
and so the third one that I want to go through is called a historical study and
so this is I I think a lot of people think that this type of study is boring
unless you're really like a history buff and you love this stuff but I think that
it can be super interesting you know and so the historical types of studies would
be really digging into the who? what? when? where?and why? of above certain book of
the Bible like when was this written who was it written to you who is the
intended audience who wrote it you know why did they write it you know in
different things like this and so I think that this can be super important
because one of one of my favorite examples is um with David when he
interprets the dreams for Nebuchadnezzar and he interprets a certain dream that
then for shadows and prophesized the future of the next like four empires
that are gonna be in in ruled and so it's like this is crazy to be able to
see like David interprets a dream of years before these things actually
take place in history you know he talks about you know the Babylonian Empire he
talks about the medo-persian Empire he talks about Alexander the Great you know
and then he talks about um just the Roman Empire and all these different
empires in the way that he prophesized and predicts it if you look through
history it happens just like that one after another you know and I'm like this
is this is fascinating to me I'm like wow like this Bible must be from God
like how is it that this was written hundreds of years before these events
took place and then they took place exactly the way that they said it was
that blows my mind you know and so it's not boring at all you just gotta know
how to do it I'm gonna skip past that one now the fourth one that I'd love to
be able to do is a cultural Bible City and so this can give you a lot of
insight when it comes to certain topics we're certain questions you might have
Alex there just may be a couple of them today and so one of them is gonna be the
example of and I think as I've ever seen this but um
certain churches believe that women shouldn't wear pants they believe it's
sinful and then it's wrong for women to wear pants the reason they believe this
is because in the Old Testament it says that a man shall not wear what a woman
wears the noble men tional not wear what a man was they take this scripture out
of context so we have to go back and think hmm
what did a man wear back then did they wear pants no they didn't most men nor
it's something that would be more like a robe like you just kind of put it all
over and there's just like one piece over the long road they didn't have
pants back then so the Bible right there is not saying that women shouldn't wear
pants pants weren't even something that men wore back then you're doing so it's
really being able to just dig deep into the cultural norms of that day and age
and being able to understand like oh okay it's not telling me I can't wear
pants but now let's look at why God said that and so then it's like an
interesting study to look into seeing things like okay the
people who worship false gods there was a false god where they you know dressed
up like you know androgynous you know ones like as as man or as a female very
transgender and God wanted his people to be separate from that he didn't want
people to have anything to do with that another weird one that's pretty similar
is like they weren't supposed to mix them materials that they were you know
and so it's like you can't mix cotton with wool you can't mix silvus so quick
kind you know and it's like okay so now in this day and age most of our coatings
have two different types of material on it you know I have lots of shirts that
have you know laces around the collar or you know even around the arm cuff and
it's like oh my gosh am I in sin I'm wearing two different materials but it's
like no we need to understand culture and the time and why God was saying that
God was not saying that you know it's it's not simple for us to mix our
materials but God was trying to prove a point he was trying to say like you are
my people and I don't want you intermarrying or being in a mix with
people who are not my people you know and so he was trying to really make a
make a point there there's something that they would understand like you know
clothing there's lots of parables in the scriptures you know Jesus is often you
know making different stories different parables about fishermen and you know
farmers and different things like this that the people would understand in that
culture in that day and age you know so we really have to take our minds out of
the 21st century and kind of implement them back into the day in ages it was
written so that we can gain deep understanding and see what it is that
God was really trying to say at that time um that kind of summarizes those
four different ways that I loved studying the Bible kind of a long video
but I'm hoping that this will give you some tools that you'll be able to use in
the future for yourself let me know if you like it um maybe I'll make more
videos maybe I will I just wanted to be able to get that out into the airwaves
because I think it's something that's so necessary um I didn't want to just hold
this treasure of information and keep it you know inside to myself I know that
when I was younger I wish that i had some guidance like this you know
somebody to tell me how to read the Bible and do it effectively so they
didn't lose heart anywhere I want to give up so that's all I have for you
today I hope you guys enjoyed it love you a
lot until next time
