What Causes TMJ (or TMD)? And Treatments for Pain Relief From TMJ Dentist (Arkansas) - Duration: 4:32.

Hi, I'm Dr. Derrick Johnson, and I wanted to talk to you a little bit today about TMJ.

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, and so that is this part of your anatomy.

It's basically your jaw joint hinge.

Sometimes you'll hear the term TMD, which is temporomandibular dysfunction or disorder.

But anyway, that's the topic today, and it's actually a pretty big topic, and the reason

I say that is this is the most used joint in your body, and if you look at, basically,

what does your head do, it only one mechanical function.

It opens and closes and moves the jaw.

So, all of your ... the major muscles of your head actually tie into movement of this joint.

And I want to show you, this is a piece of software.

It's really helpful.

It's called BiteFX.

But, as far as illustrating how the jaw works, what we have here ... Here's the actual joint

itself, and here's all the muscles that come together to move the jaw.

And what we want in health, we want this system to be in harmony and coordinated, and what

that means is when this joint fits with the disc, there's a disc in place, when the joint

fits, all the teeth fit, and your nervous system and the muscles, they like that when

things fit.

I'll often use the analogy of a door.

A door's another hinged system.

So, here's a door that, it fits very well, so it's very effortless to open and close

this door.

Hardly any effort, but you could imagine if that door was off the hinge, and imagine if

I had to open it every single time, it would take a lot of energy and a lot of muscle activity.

So basically, when this jaw joint is off the hinge, and it's not lining up with the teeth,

your body does this self-protective response, just like opening the door off the hinge.

The muscles are all tense all the time trying to coordinate the jaw joint.

And the problem with that is it can cause a lot of damage.

It can cause sore muscles, it can cause headaches, it can cause actual damage and deterioration

of the joint, joint noises.

It can cause ear pain.

It very, very typically causes tooth wear, breaking of teeth, tooth loss, root canals.

There's so many things that can be traced back this system being out of whack or out

of order.

And so, that's the basic idea of how we treat this.

So, if you're suffering from headaches, clenching your teeth, a history of broken teeth, multiple

root canals, worn teeth.

Sometimes there is like a ringing in the ear or a fullness in the ear can be one of the

symptoms as well.

A lot of times there's neck pain associated, like neck and TMJ pain very much go hand in

hand.

A lot of times a history of a car accident or whiplash injuries almost always affect

the TMJ to some extent.

So, those are some ways that it shows up, but one of the first things that we want to

do is evaluate that system, and here we can take a look at it again.

We want to know when the joints are in place, are the teeth in alignment?

And another tool we use to figure that out is we have something called an articulator,

so we could actually build a replica of how your jaw works, and we can see okay, what

are your joints and teeth doing?

Are they in harmony?

Are they out of harmony?

We can start to see wear patterns on the teeth and kind of do the detective work to figure

out what's the root cause of the problem?

So essentially, what the fix is is there's techniques where we can get the system back

in harmony, and the sooner that we do that when there's signs of a problem, the sooner

that we can do it, the more effective, easier, less expensive the solutions are.

So anyway, that's a little bit about TMJ.

If you were late to any of these things, come see me and we can talk about it more in detail.

All right.

English Tutor Nick P Verb Phrase (59) Cast Aside Someone or Something - Duration: 1:55.

Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 59. The verb phrase today is

cast aside someone or something. Okay. Let's look at the note here. If

someone casts another person or thing aside, he or she discards them. You know,

get rid of them like almost like they are

garbage . Discards them because they no longer like them or feel they need to

keep them. Or , or have them. Or now, let's look at number two. also we have two

meanings here. If someone cast aside unpleasant feelings he or she stops

having them or gets rid of them. Okay. So we have two examples. One for each

meaning here. Let's look at example number one after twenty years of hard

work and loyalty MR. Robinson has been cast aside and replaced for younger

blood. Younger blood means somebody of course who is much younger. That has more

energy because they're younger of course. And could be paid a lower salary. Yeah. So you

know companies may do this when it's to their benefit. Okay. Let's look at number

two. After winning the jackpot lottery Janice was able to cast aside all her

worries about financial problems. So again she got rid of these unpleasant

feelings. She got rid of these worries.

She's got lots of money now. She doesn't

have to worry about financial problems

or bills or anything like that anymore.

Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope

it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye- bye

Chelsea team news: Predicted Chelsea line up vs Bournemouth – Morata or Giroud to start? - Duration: 2:25.

Maurizio Sarri has plenty of options to consider ahead of Chelsea's clash with Bournemouth on Saturday – but who will he choose to start? The Italian boss has a full squad to pick from, with Cesc Fabregas the only potential doubt ahead of the game at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have been in excellent form to kick start their campaign, winning all three of their opening games in the Premier League

However, Sarri could still be tempted to reshuffle his options with Alvaro Morata continuing to cut a frustrated figure up front

Morata scored in the 3-2 victory over Arsenal but failed to make an impact in the narrow win against Newcastle last weekend

Olivier Giroud is reportedly ready to knuckle down and burst into the first team picture ahead of Morata after returning to full fitness following his World Cup break

The Frenchman showed flashes of quality for the Blues at the end of last season, and may find himself in the starting XI sooner rather than later

However, it remains to be seen whether Sarri is prepared to drop Morata this soon in the new season for fear of destroying the Spanish ace's already shaky confidence

Elsewhere, Pedro has been in fine form for Chelsea and is set to keep his place in the line-up, with Willian forced to wait for his chance on the bench

New signing Jorginho completed 158 passes versus Newcastle – the second highest total from any player in Premier League history – and has wowed Chelsea fans this season

He will continue to line-up in the Blues' settled midfield trio alongside Mateo Kovacic and N'Golo Kante

Take a look through the images below to reveal the predicted Chelsea line-up to face Bournemouth

Are Your Growing Or Rotting? | Infinity Effect Short - Duration: 1:46.

How many of you know somebody who has great potential...

...but doesn't do anything with it?

How many of us have been guilty of that in the past?

I can't say of someone, that a person is upset

unless I know what the character marks of me being upset is.

When we look at people and we see that they aren't fulfilling their potential

it's oftentimes because we see the traits that we would exhibit within ourselves.

It requires for us to take courage, to step into the face of the unknown

to look fear in the face and say "I'm still going to go ahead and do this anyway."

When you look at a seed, right,

in the earth

it's either green and growing...or ripe and rotting.

And these are the choices that we make daily

so we either grow or we rot.

The moment that we stop pushing, we start declining.

Do you think the billionaire

who has achieved success as the result of a genuine work ethic

utilizes those excuses?

"I'm not getting the result with my business because of obstacle A, B, and C?"

Or do they look at the obstacle and go "Give me the options.

Avenue A, avenue B, avenue C.

I'm gonna do, blah."

This is the importance of hustle.

It's the importance of doing the do and learning the lesson along the way.

How do you break the surface of the Earth if you don't actually put the effort in?

Red Pill or Blue Pill or True Democracy? - Duration: 11:46.

Hi it's Andrea! So what happens when you're faced

with candidate choices that don't leave you

feeling very excited about supporting either one?

I have some thoughts because many of you are

being faced with this sort of Republican vs. neoliberal

decision and you just feel between a rock

and a hard place. Well here in Colorado, for the

2018 general election, we have a

gubernatorial race and one candidate is a

Republican and one candidate is a Democrat.

I personally don't see

a substantive difference between the two, and let me

explain, we give you a few ideas why I think

that. Number one they're, both very soft on oil

and gas, and here in Colorado fracking is a

huge concern. We have one of the most fracked

counties in the nation here in Colorado. And

then they're both very much into privatization,

both of them are strong supporters of charter

schools and both of them are very soft and just

this general privatization and this public private

partnership way of doing business and of

supposedly serving the needs of Colorado

residents. Where these candidates are different

tend to be in their identities and sort of their

personal histories. On one hand, we have the

Republican candidate who's the grandson of a

former Denver mayor from the 1920s, who

actually was an associate and a member of the

local KKK organization, and on the other hand, we

have a Democrat who currently is a member of

Congress, who puts a lot of energy into voicing

his identity as an LGBT member of Congress, and

who supposedly was in Congress to work on

immigration reform. Well, if you look at his

track record, he wasn't a champion on either one

of those things. In case you haven't noticed, we

don't have a comprehensive immigration reform and

we certainly don't have federal job protections

for the LGBT community, for which transgender

people really, really need that protection. And so

here we are, we have basically two people that

are roughly the same, and don't have track

records of really, really solving problems that

really impact people here in Colorado, so there

are a lot of people on the Democratic side of the

globe, here in Colorado that are putting a lot of

pressure on left leaning and Progressive voters.

They must support this Democratic

candidate, because this other guy is so

terrible he's a KKK person of course, that's

never been proven to be true, but he is a

conservative and we know how he's gonna line up.

And again the track record of the Democrat

doesn't seem to be all that different from really

what the Republican is all about.

So progressive and left leaning voters here are

finding themselves between a rock and a hard

place. So one of the things that we need to talk

about it really is about what democracy actually

is, because we've all been conditioned into

responding to candidacies as being the only way for

us to express democracy. And that's part of it,

but democracy, we have to say, is a dictatorship

of the majority, and it's a system in which

everyone has a voice, everyone has an opportunity

to state their preferences about a certain

issue or certain candidate, and it's supposed to

be very participatory.

The thing of it is, is that here in

Colorado, our Democratic choices are not simply

for candidates, but we also have the ability to

vote on citizen-led initiatives, of course

referred measures that come from our state

legislature. And so I have a proposition that

hopefully will give you some ideas on how to deal

with this conundrum that you might be

having in your own election, in your own state.

Now I'm gonna stay for the record that what I'm

about to suggest is not an official position of

the Green Party, of any state Green Party that I'm

aware of; it is my opinion. But when you're faced

with a ballot that has not just candidate choices

but initiative choices, my suggestion to you at

least for the gubernatorial candidacy, is that

you don't even cast a vote for governor at all.

Whoa! What am I saying? That's really radical!

The way that laws get passed

here in Colorado is pretty much the way it is

everywhere else. It goes through your state

legislature. It's lands on the desk of the

governor, and the governor signs or vetoes and then

everyone carries on. So instead of voting for

governor here in Colorado, what my suggestion is

that we pay more attention to the legislative

candidates for House and for state Senate because

the governor's don't create legislation; they

simply enact them, and it's up to the state

legislature to put something in front of the

governor to sign or veto. And so we have several

races here in Colorado, where there are some

fairly interesting choices. One choice in

particular is in our Colorado House District 12,

where we have a woman named Theresa Stets, who

is an unaffiliated candidate who has been

endorsed by the Green Party of Colorado, who is

going to be strong against oil and gas

extraction. She's going to be working on the Labor

Peace Act which is roughly sort of a Right to Work

situation that we have here in Colorado. It's

going to be bolstering our state retirement fund

called PERA and doing some of these other things

that really are meaningful to the people of

Colorado and so that's. Why we're supporting

her. But I want to get back to this idea of what

democracy actually is. Yes, sometimes, that

includes voting, but many of us here are engaged in

activist communities, and I think that's really

the place where we need to practice the basic

principles of democracy, and what I mean by that

is accountability, transparency, principled

dialogue, principled debate coming to consensus

over issues, making sure that everyone has a voice

and a vote. And a lot of times we can

make that happen in our activist spaces, but we

need to understand that the reason why we're

often faced with these lackluster choices in

candidates is because they duopoly parties,

the Democrats and Republican parties and their

corporate partners, have conditioned us all to

accept only those particular candidacies and they

actually have hundreds of years ahead of us in

working on the system where our choices of

democracy have become very telescoped, and that we

really can't see democracy beyond the choices

that are served up. And so the challenge to that

for us is to build up our grassroots movements.

Now, this is where the actual principles of

democracy are going to be very, very important. We

need things to be fair. We need folks to have a

voice. We need folks to be able to make a choice.

We need a space where there's principled debate

and principled discussion so that we can come to

the right outcomes. So how do we build this mass

movement? Just a few ideas because I want to keep

this video short. But first of all, we have to

build community. That means that we actually have

to build relationships with one another and we

have to look out for each other's interests. Now

those of you that are engaged in activist

communities that do have some direct action

activities, this is a great opportunity for you

to think about what it's going to take in order to

have child care for your meetings, have a bail

fund, just in case people get arrested at your

actions, and some of these other sorts of mutual

aid sort of things. In some activist spaces

people even concern themselves with

food and shelter of the members, but it's

necessary, because the system now is really trying

to break us down economically. And you, want to keep

as many people together as possible and so that

kind of community building is going to be really

important. The other aspect that's really

important is a continuing political education.

You want to make sure that newcomers understand the

issues very quickly and fairly thoroughly because

you need to have as many people moving and

organizing and conducting outreach as possible.

The other thing that word outreach, that's

extremely important. You, want to make sure that

you're talking to people where you find them and

the temptation sometimes for us on the left is to

be so ideologically pure and to feel so superior

that we have a really hard time explaining what

we mean to people who might be interested in the

solutions that we have to offer, and so we have to

make sure that when we're talking to people, when

we're out reaching to people, that we're

giving them sufficient information but also

giving them space to connect our information with

their daily lives because, like it or not, the

real expert of people's daily lives are those

people themselves, and so we have to give space

for them to be able to talk freely about how

things are impacting them, and we can help out

with some more political education. Now this is

going to be really, really important, because the

duopoly parties, capitalist parties, they have hundreds of

years ahead of us, and so we also need to be

concerned with the long game, and I understand,

for those of us that are engaged in fighting

climate change for example, we're very

panicked about how many years that we have left

in an environment on this planet that can sustain

life, and so that it is an urgent situation. I

don't mean to downplay that at all, but we need

to recognize that things are not going happen,

change is not going to happen in one election cycle.

And while we may support a candidate today and

that candidate may not be successful, we need to

see that as the building blocks to the next round.

When you're talking about legislative offices,

a lot of times we're only talking about a two

year span. So we need to be able to also

radically assess and critique and understand what

works and what doesn't work when a candidate

doesn't win. That's also very important

information. So...you don't have to vote for

governor. Think about who's running for the

legislature. Think about those questions that are

going to be on your ballot. Those represent some

other choices that you can make without having to

be pulled into the lesser evil argument. You

don't have to be pulled into that, and ultimately

choosing consciously to not vote for governor or

for any other candidate slot on your ballot, is a

conscious choice, and it is permissible within

democracy to make that choice. So don't let

anybody bully you into something that you don't

want to do. So, I hope that gives you some

perspective that you can use when you're faced

with making these choices, you don't have to vote

for any candidate in particular, you can actually

leave some spots on your ballot open, but

consider some of these other options, and make

sure those options fit you and your community.

And do the work of building the mass movement,

because if we do that work correctly, we can

leverage this government any way that we want.

So, thank you very much for listening. Good luck on

that ballot. Don't be bullied into making a

choice you don't want to make.

How To Start Your Speech or Presentation | 4 Effective Tips To Hook The Audience | #SpeakingTips 005 - Duration: 12:57.

Hi everyone, in this particular video, I'll be sharing with you how you can enhance your introduction of your presentation

so that your audience members find you much more credible and they will

pay closer attention to what you truly have to say.

So how do you exactly get their attention, building credibility? The name of this technique

is none other than - Establishing Credibility. I repeat, 'Establishing Credibility'. What does

it mean to establish credibility? It simply means this; that you as a

speaker speaking on this topic, you would need to either be someone who is

a subject matter expert, someone who is a practitioner

and not just merely a theorist, and someone who has the experience

whether it's research experience or experiences in the execution

of the exact content that you're going to share. So what makes you

a subject matter expert? Of course, you can boil down to the accolades, the awards,

the testimonials, and also at the same time, it may not just be the awards

per se, it could also be the things that you DO; the

action itself. So here's exactly how you can establish credibility

but before we go into the specifics, why should you establish credibility?

It is because it makes whatever you're going say next in your main

part of the speech, the crux of your speech, more believable. At the

same time, the audience members are less likely to hold opposing views,

doubts that tend to run counter

to the effectiveness of the points that you're going to deliver. Now, here's

how you can establish credibility - the first technique as I've mentioned

earlier, would exactly be - Sharing with them how many

years you've spent in researching and executing

that particular task. When we say researching, now you need not

be a PhD holder, you need not be a Master Degree

holder of a particular discipline...but if you've spent

a significant amount of time on researching for that particular topic,

your words tend to be more credible. For instance, you can start off even your

presentation by saying that, "Today, I'll be sharing with you on

Public Speaking techniques, how to ace your interview skills. Now over the past

9 years, I've spent several hours per day

researching on some of the best practices by some of the best interview teachers

both online, offline, live workshops as well.

Now that is building credibility by talking about your experience mileage,

your research mileage. #2. How does Statistics help in terms of your

introduction? It helps very much because it lends credibility to the data

and more importantly, it supports your claim or your

normative opinion. For example, if you say that, "More and more people are

down with diabetes in Country X.", if you simply just say

that, it might not be as accurate or as powerful as compared to, say,

"According to the recent Health Department Survey, statistics show that 33%

of the population has diabetes..". Now that

would be much more powerful than simply just say "more and more people" or "more people".

Now what can you do even better to make this

startling statistic which already gets the audience members to sit up and listen?

What can you do a little bit more, to make the audience members feel the impact?

You see, if someone just sees the figure itself, without

the link to the impact or the severity of the problem,

they're not going to literally "see" the problem. So how

do you make them "see" the problem? Let's take for example, you're in a live

seminar, a live training workshop and you ask the audience members this

"Ladies & Gentlemen, could you just turn to your left and look at the person on your left?

Could you then turn to the person on your right, take a good look at

that person and now I would like to take a good look at yourself..

now here's the statistics from the recent Health Department Survey,

that 1 out of the 3 of you...is very likely to be down with

diabetes...". Now that would be a much more powerful

representation for your audience members because they feel that it's much more live.

Now what exactly mean by a quotation? As the name suggests, it is

a quote; it's something that someone had said and you

now reproduce it and, of course, giving due credit

to the source itself. For instance, there are many different quotes

that individuals use to start off a presentation.

Say, something like, "Ladies & Gentlemen, 'Facts Tell, Stories Sell'"

That is an example of a quote and it would be very appropriate

especially if you're presentation is about storytelling or story-selling.

Or some individuals can say, "As Martin Luthur King once said...

'The time is always right to do what is right. Now is the

right time to do this.", and it will encourage you to move

on later on to the content and then agreeing with what's going to be said.

Now when it comes to using quotes, here are two quick tips that you can consider,

so that the quote that you use is not only highly relevant, but at the same time,

it's something that's going to be much more memorable. So if you're ready, let's

get going! The first tip for you to take note of is - if it's ever

possible, try and value add to the quote. That means instead of simply just

saying, 'Facts Tell, Stories Sell'. Now of course, someone people might not have heard of

it, but for the individuals who have heard of it, they might want something more and here's

how you can do it - all you've to do is say what is

often NOT said. Let me repeat the magic phrase -

'what is often not said'. For instance, you can say, "Facts

Tell, Stories Sell...but what is often not said is this...

your stories can only sell, if you know how to narrate

it well.". That would be a value add to that quote and that phrase

'what is often not said' helps to transit to that part; it makes you

be seen as more of a thought leader, as more of a value giver,

contributing to on top of what are some of the more commonly used

quotes. So that's one tip. The second tip you can consider

using, would be that of explaining the quote

just a little bit and see how well you tie it back in your

conclusion, so it makes it seem like it's like a sandwich method where you start off with a quote

and you end off with a similarly related quote. What do I mean by

explaining the quote? It simply means this - that when you say, for instance, 'The mind works like

a parachute, it works best when it is open.". Just

give it a bit of an explanation, even one or two sentences would be good

something like, 'We need to therefore keep a powerful open mind, so that we will not

miss out on opportunities and my speech today, is to help you keep an

open mind especially when we tend to get very defensive.". So that would

pave the way for your presentation and delivery. I often share with

individuals, you craft a powerful introduction with a powerful enough

story. 'Facts Tell, Stories Sell.' - we've heard of this

many many times..but why is it that stories truly sell?

It's because stories, they help to bring alive

common problems that people feel, and it helps to make it more

real, more tangible for lack of a better term, make it more

tangible for your audience members. You see, when you tell a story

instantly, it helps the audience members connect with you

but do you know what is the number one problem that many presenters make when they tell

a story as an introduction? They start off their presentation by saying this -

"Ladies & Gentlemen, le tme tell you a story...", this is what

they do, they start off their presentation and they say, "Let me tell you a story".

Now, it's the same thing as simply starting off a joke

by saying, "Let me tell you a joke". Now what's wrong with that approach

or what is not as appropriate with that approach is this - the moment you signpost

your audience members that you're going to tell a joke, that

reduces or removes the element of surprise. It's like telling them, "I'm

going now be telling you the funniest joke ever, you're going to laugh like crazy."

The audience members would probably either bring up their defensive shields and just going to challenge

that statement, "Is it really that funny?", or they're just going to think of ways to preempt

what you're going to say, therefore missing out on the punchline or punch word. So,

it's extremely important, if you want to tell a story, just tell the story!

You don't have to say let me tell you a story, just tell the story, go straight

into the story. Here's one thing I would like to add,

the thing is this, when you tell a story, you need not start

from the top till the end; that means the beginning of the story

till the end of the story in a chronological order. There are many different permutations

these are what we call advanced storytelling techniques. You can of course

start with the middle of the story, you can start with the climax (tipping point),

that means the hero's journey, you can start off with the tension, the

exciting part of the story, or you can even start off with the solution.

For example, some speakers would prefer to start off with the solution first,

by saying something like, "I was able to lose..

very healthy, and sustainably, 3 kilograms per month

on a particular diet (keto?) that it took me six years to finally uncover..

a diet that was sustainable, a diet that's supported by medical practitioners,

and a diet that did not require me to go to extreme.

Then, move on to talk about, say, "How it all started..."

Starting off with a solution, there's a benefit of doing it, in fact there are benefits

of doing different kinds of permutations, for instance, starting with the resolution helps the

audience members to stay interested, to stay interested

in how you started and it gives them sort of like a

preview of what they can expect. This is especially useful if you're speaking

before audience members who are extremely busy, and they want you to get straight

to the point very very quickly, and then they might therefore think that it's worth

my time to stay a bit longer, just to hear what you've to say.

I hope you've enjoyed all these techniques so far! If you would like to hear more of these techniques, feel

free to comment, feel free to send me a message as well and my team and I

will be looking through your various suggestions to create more value giving videos

for you. Take care and I'll see you very soon! Thank you very much for watching

and in this particular video, I shared with you exactly how to craft

a killer intro, a killer opener, how to

start or begin your speech, how to start your presentation

whether it's for powerpoint, whether it's for business, or corporate, or even

investment pitch - selling vision, selling a story

to your prospective audience members or to your prospective clients.

What are some of the effective ways to attract, to hook your audience members

attention. Here are the four main tips that I've shared:

the first tip I've shared with you would be exactly how to let your audience

members know about your credibility. It could be

your practical experience, it is very similar to what we called 'documentation'

very similar to 'creation of credibility and authority'.

And the thing is this, you don't need a PhD, you don't need a master's degree

in Law, Engineering or in Business to be able to teach

some of these strategies from debate to moot to, say, things like courtroom tactics.

The second technique that I've shared with you would

be the use of statistics. Sometimes, let the numbers

let the figures, let the stats come alive, of course,

don't just lay out the stats like that, but you make them relevant

through what I've described

earlier in this video. The third technique would be the use

of quotations. Using of quotations could be a powerful

maxim, or powerful phrase or powerful

statement for your audience members to remember even after they've

watched your presentation, but of course, remember if you quote someone,

or from a certain source, to credit the source; it's important for us not to just take it

wholesale, without crediting or giving due credit.

And the final strategy that I've shared in this particular video would be to tell a story

and make a point. We know that facts tell, stories sell.

But of course not all stories are created equal, we need to know what are

specific strategies on how we can get the audience

to buy in through the process, the conflicts, go through the hero's

journey and eventually have that resolution. So I hope all the

tips have been useful for you. Remember to apply, apply and..

APPLY!

Oh, I-- I-- I wear both straps.

Gotta make sure it's secure.

Wear it over both shoulders.

Get the two straps, otherwise you're gonna mess up your back

and then you're gonna be walking like this

and then people are gonna be asking, "What's wrong with your back?"

Always double.

Stay healthy.

Blockchain Games: Fad or Future? - Duration: 9:21.

For the love of god by Damien Hirst sold for $100 million, a De Kooning for $300 million,

a Davinci for a record $450 million.

Since the dawn of time, whether it be for survival or social capital, people have collected

things, it is just that nowadays things are exchanged for money, and somethings for a

lot of it.

A diamond skull you can hold in your hand or a painting you can hang on your wall, their

value is determined in part by their scarcity but also by the fact that they exist in the

material world.

How then is it possible for a CryptoKitty, which isn't even a physical object but just

a code written on a blockchain, could sell for $140k?

And this CryptoKitty is not the only 'blockchain collectable' to be sold at such a ridiculous price

This Cryptopunk sold for 16k.

Homer Simpson-meets-Pepe The Frog was sold for a jaw dropping $39K.

And with CryptoKitties' total sales bringing in $25 million,

they are by far not the only game that's trying to turn code into gold.

Everything in Blockchain games costs real money. You have to make a decent investment to begin with. It is accessible to everyone.

So what are blockchain games and why do people invest so much time and money into them?

Blockchain games are built using distributed ledger technology.

And most of them like CryptoKitties are being built on the Ethereum blockchain.

Objects that are written on blockchain have an objective history to them. It can't be faked like for example you

have a gun in the blockchain version of CS:GO and somehow you manage to ask Arnold Schwarzenegger to play the game on your computer

with your gun and he shoots somebody, and

this thing that Arnold Schwarzenegger played with your gun

is written to Blockchain on your gun and this gun also automatically increases in value

because it's a celebrity gun.

Each СryptoKitty is what's called a non-fungible ERC-721 token.

Non-fungible means that unlike Ethereum or Bitcoin, each ERC-721 token is one of a kind.

So each Kitty you own is a unique Kitty, making it rare and scarce and most importantly owning

the token means that you own the CryptoKitty's code.

For this video we decided to play 2 recently released blockchain games.

Blockchain Cuties and 0xUniverse.

But before we could start playing, first we had to top up our crypto wallets.

Everything in Blockchain games cost real money

They are not free.

In order to play you need Ethereum.

But think of it as an investment.

But, more on this later.

So, here are Blockchain Cuties.

Think CryptoKitties, but cuter, possibly.

Every new player receives a free trial cutie but it disappears once you breed your first

one.

The real serious players want what's called a "generation 0" Cutie.

These are the 'rarest' of the rare in terms of Cuties.

The starting price for one of these: 0.1 ETH, which is about $30 at the time of the recording.

There are two options in the game: - To breed your own Cutie with a unique genome.

- Or to send it on what the developers decided to call adventures, where it will fight with

other Cuties.

Though don't expect anything like Zelda or Mortal Kombat.

We put our Cuties on the battlefield and they fought surprisingly well!

Wins strengthen and give experience to the Cuties, which increases their value.

So, later on you can sell them for a profit.

We also played the 0xUniverse.

The idea of this game is to collect planets and build your own universe.

Without going into too much detail, we pretty much just launched a bunch of rockets to go

look for new planets, with a few never returning, apparently lost in space.

But since we didn't discover any planets, we decided to buy the coolest-looking planet

we could find.

In total, we spent $50 at 0xUniverse.

Blockchain games are all about money.

Every action you make in these games - you pay for.

In exchange if you are lucky you might be able to make a positive ROI.

People who are collecting in a digital space, they are good

at staying focused, they have some kinds of critical thinking because they're making

comparisons.

Even though we were just breeding Cuties when we played it, it gave us a sort of sense of

achievement.

Turns out this makes total sense.

When you actually make the purchase you have the reward centre triggers in your brain:

you've accomplished something.

The same when you're playing a game with any kind of reward so your brain responds

with a reward, neurotransmitters, it feels good.

So what drove players to these blockchain games in the first place?

Blockchain games allow them to earn money.

The average gamer is not like a gamer at all, it's more of a trader.

Usually a male of age 25-40 They can buy an asset, do something with it and

try to sell it at a higher price I know a guy personally who made 40k euros by playing CryptoKitties in December.

So if the average gamer is not actually a gamer but really more of a trader - can we

really call it a game?

Well, the answer is both Yes... and…

No.

The breeding aspect is really interesting to me, trying to decode the genome, it does

require you breeding constantly to figure out the data point to figure out how the genome

works, and that puzzle of the game is one of the most intriguing things in Blockchain Cuties to me.

But what really makes these games popular is the fact that these blockchain Cuties or

kitties or planets or whatever else are essentially a cryptocurrency, which you can buy, sell

or hold.

And as cryptocurrencies are extremely volatile, so are the games that use them.

If crypto completely crashed to the ground, yeah, I would probably stop playing Blockchain

Cuties.

And that is what happened to blockchain games.

Since the release of CryptoKitties in December 2017 the number of daily users has dropped

by 96% from 14,000 to around 500 less than a year later.

These collectible games obviously resemble gambling, and like a casino, the house always

wins.

There might be a few lucky success stories, there are certain behaviors to watch out for:

Electronic funds are quite hard to keep track of mentally.

People when they do mental accounting.

When you then put that into cryptocurrency and gambling with decimal points.

It's very difficult for individuals to really easily track how much they are winning and

particularly how much they are losing.

When It starts to be problematic is when people are gambling more than they can afford to

lose.

When it no longer a fun, entertaining leisure activity.

But on the other hand, these games are about collecting, not about betting.

So what compels people to play?

These objects are a part of how they see themselves or a part of their identity.

People collect because these objects have meaning to them and by accumulating them it

gives them a sense of competence or self-efficacy and it gives them social capital, something

to talk to other collectors about, to show that they are knowledgeable, that they

have these assets.

Although we were not constantly breeding like Risсo, it was fun playing both Cuties and

0xUniverse.

It is hard though to justify spending $40 on a digital planet and even more on the Cuties.

Furthermore over the time we spent playing, the crypto market has dropped substantially

and the value of the Cuties, planets and most of the collectibles have followed suit.

Blockchain created digital scarcity.

While it is true the code behind a pixelated character is unique, something almost completely

identical is so easily reproducible that the idea of uniqueness is almost meaningless.

What is being created is really just artificial scarcity.

So far these collectible games don't offer much to gamers, their survival it seems depends

on whether they can offer gamers more than just a trading platform.

The relationship between player and developer will be more like an open market relationship

rather than a closed ecosystem like it is now.

As long as blockchain has a system where I'm going to have to pay gas to write to and it's

going to take a decent amount of time I don't think that's going to fit in to something

like world of Warcraft.

This is the first generation that are collecting digital objects, if you collect sculptures

or Dresden dolls, you can pass those down, how does this pass down?

So whether or not the idea of blockchain games appeals to you, their existence raises some interesting questions

about value, scarcity, gaming and even ownership.
