The new SmartThings Tracker will help you find your stuff.

What makes it different from other tracking devices is that it doesn't rely

only on Bluetooth.

It uses Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE-M which allows it to track

items indoors and outdoors while conserving battery life, but before we dig in, let's

talk requirements.

First of all, you need to buy the device which sells for $99.

The initial fee includes a year of service, and once that expires, you'll pay $5 per month

or $50 annually.

The service is currently provided by AT&T with Verizon launching later this year, but

you don't have to have cellular service with either company in order to use the device.

You do have to be in the U.S., however, as it only works on U.S. networks.

A SmartThings hub is also not a necessity, but Tracker works with V2, V3, SmartThings

Wi-Fi hubs, the ADT Smart Security Panel, and Connect Home hubs.

I tested it with both V2 and V3 and there were no differences in performance.

Finally, you will need the new SmartThings Connect app as it doesn't work with SmartThings

Classic.

Setting the device up is simple.

If you turn Tracker on before opening the Connect app, you will receive an automated

message prompting you to connect the device and tie it to a location.

If not, head to the Device tab, touch the plus sign, and select Tracker once it appears.

After that, simply follow the on-screen instructions.

The only problem I had during setup was that Tracker kept attaching to the wrong hub because

it was attaching to my default location.

You can change your default location using a SmartThings IDE login so I'll drop instructions

for doing below, but for now, let's talk about tracking.

First, I tried to track it by asking a friend to hide Tracker at a couple of indoor locations.

All Tracker can do is show the last known estimated address of your Tracker on-demand,

which it does with decent accuracy, but an estimated address doesn't tell you that much.

Generally speaking, cheap Bluetooth trackers are better at finding items indoors as they're

often equipped with things like alarms or proximity sensors that can really help you

hone in on an item, all things that Tracker is lacking which why I'm giving it a thumbs

down for indoor tracking.

Of course, if I was trying to find something larger than Tracker, like a car or a person,

I might have had better luck, which is why the device is more useful when tracking items

outdoors, but there is a catch...

Tracker can't map the device's location in real-time.

The best way to track something is to press the live tracking button.

This option will update the device's location once per minute for ten minutes.

By pressing the travel path button, you can also view the device's most recent travel

path and scroll through to see where it was at different points in time.

Alternatively, you can set up automatic location updates from the settings menu.

This option will automatically ping the device's location at set intervals with the shortest

interval being 10 minutes.

Of course, if you're trying to track an item, every 10 minutes is even less useful than

every minute which is why outdoor tracking gets a maybe you should buy it depending on

what you're trying to do.

Personally, I would not trust it to track a child or pet, maybe you could use it to

keep tabs on where you parked your car, but keep in mind that tracking a moving vehicle

or tracking from a moving vehicle is basically impossible.

The device is dust and water resistant so you can use it outside, but of course you

can do more than track so let's talk about that.

First, Tracker can send notifications.

You simply press the power button twice, which sends the device's location to your SmartThings

app.

Second, you can set two geofence locations.

For example, you might set one around your home and one around your child's school.

Third, Tracker can be used as an arrival sensor which means that you can use it in automations.

From the automations tab, click the plus button, select the location Tracker is attached to,

and then custom automation.

You'll see a condition here called "based on a member's location," but for me, this

only works with my phone, so I ended up using the option labeled as "based on device

status."

From here, select your Tracker, and then you can choose enter or leave zone.

If you want, you can add even more conditions like, only if it's between 11:00 am and

12:00 pm on a Tuesday or Thursday, and then we can add another condition like my security

mode is disarmed.

Under that, you can choose from notify me, control a device, and change this locations

mode.

And again, you can choose multiple actions like change mode to away, and turn off the

lights.

Finally, from the app, you can press the top button to toggle between street and Satellite

view or you can click on the date which drops down and allows you to view your location's

history by day.

I think the bottom line here is that I'm not overly enthusiastic about the Tracker but

I'm also not opposed to it.

It really just depends on why you want to use it.

let's break it down.

That's what we are here for!

Today we will be discussing the ins and outs, ups and downs, swipe lefts and swipe rights

of iOS 12 and whether an upgrade is right for you.

What is iOS 12?

The twelfth major release of Apple's mobile operating system was announced in June of 2018

and made available to devs and beta testers shortly thereafter.

The look is very similar to iOS 11, but there are some behind the scene adjustments

when it comes to performance, security & battery-saving, not to mention some new app functionality

that Apple is hoping will get fans excited.

A handful of Apple fans and critics have already had access to the pre-released beta versions

and their reviews are mixed.

So what is there to get excited about?

Apple says that performance will be 70% faster with iOS 12!

Now, that's a big claim.

This could be especially useful for those with older devices looking for a performance boost.

The camera app will launch faster so you're less likely to miss that picture-perfect moment.

The update also has features like screen time tracking and

will streamline the user experience on iPads to be more like the iPhone X.

Following the AI trend, Apple introduced a smarter Siri in this update,

broadening the amount of knowledge she has.

Yet, one of the more noticeable updates of iOS 12 is the Siri shortcut.

For those who are fans of shortcuts, this update might be perfect for you.

You can now create a series of automations that can be activated via Siri.

Automations can be as simple as placing an order at your favorite restaurant via voice command

or as complex as having Sri automatically pull up the directions home and texting your

roommate that you will be there soon.

These series of shortcuts can be built within the Shortcut app and labeled

under certain voice commands such as "I'm going home".

In addition, Siri now has the ability to create suggestions based on your shortcuts,

phone activity, and frequently used apps.

Suggestions may include placing an order of your favorite drink at the local Starbucks you frequent

or Facetiming your mom on a Saturday afternoon since that is usually when you Facetime.

While we are on the topic of Facetime, you can now finally Facetime more than one person at a time!

This update allows you to add up to 32 people in a facetime group.

Overkill?

Other features in iOS 12 include grouped notifications on your lock screen

and instant tuning of said notifications.

Users can now choose to have notifications delivered quietly or have them turned off

if they do not want to be disturbed.

Speaking about not being disturbed, Apple also updated the Do Not Disturb mode.

Users can set how long they want their DND mode to be on to maximize productivity in times of need.

Wow, DND mode always meant something very different to me.

In addition, users who do not want to receive notifications when they are asleep

can use the new bedtime mode.

Notifications will automatically appear the next morning after bedtime mode is turned off.

For Apple Carplay users, we have great news!

This update finally allows you to access third party navigation apps such as Google Maps and Waze.

Very exciting!

So why wouldn't you want to upgrade as soon as possible?

Traditionally, you'd be prudent to let others work out the kinks first or you might expect

a noticeable lag in both performance and battery life.

(cough) iOS 11 (cough)

Fear not my jaded-by-previous-break-your-iphone-update friends, iOS 12 is focused on exactly those fears.

With Apple's primary focus being on performance, stability and bug fixes,

these particular fears should be a non-issue.

However, if you are looking for groundbreaking technology,

this update may be a bit disappointing to you.

The most exciting technology update you will get with iOS 12 is ARKit 2.0 and the Measure app.

ARKit 2.0 now includes 3D object recognition and this means that 3D objects will now be

incorporated into AR experiences.

The Measure app allows you to measure objects and surfaces, which may come in handy when

you need to know how big something is or how much space you have.

If you are an Animoji fan, this update includes tongue and wink detection and four new characters.

You will now also be able to create your own avatar with Memoji.

So should you upgrade?

iOS is perfect for users who have older devices and want upgraded performance and

users who are all about productivity.

For those who are looking for cool, innovative updates, this one might be a bit lackluster.

While it's healthy to update your software to fix existing bugs, it also doesn't hurt

to hold off on this update if you find no problems with your device right now!

you know it's like mental floss we do between the teeth now it's in between the ear

mental floss and as you do this regularly this question will disappear

for you will you feel better but if not like this you're wasting time you're

giving away time you're investing time you're strengthening yourself people who

spend time in the morning exercising for example they took out an hour of the

exercise you would think that they would have less energy for the rest of

it if we give it a full hour to running and going to the gym they were gonna get

tired early on the contrary they have more energy throughout the day people

who exercise are far more energetic and they remain energetic throughout the day

till late at night in the same way look at meditation or the kind of training

strengthening yourself and throughout the day the amount of distractions you

have the amount of thing you've looking to get caught up into you come out of

them you also have high quality sleep at nights which means you may need little bit but

less sleep than you normally normally need so like this you'll have plenty of

time but now the time is really a challenge prioritisation is the

challenge what is the priority of life so those who understand that they can

have slightly dirty clothes they'll still be fine slightly dirty people's

will be fine right leader you know dirty body they'll still be fine but slightly

dirty mind you cannot be fine immediately you happen is a compromise

the slightest jealousy reciters anger gentlemen state of distraction we compromise

our own happiness at some level so we understand this question

disappears and actually the opposite thing happened we're looking for every

little opportunity to meditate when there nothing else is happening we start

go back to our mantra nothing else is happening we come back to our breath so

instead of saying you know can I do it once in two three days can I do it every

hour can I do it every half an hour because it's something we really enjoy

Microaggressions & Inclusivity in Schools: Why Is It Important? - Duration: 2:44.

My name is Piri Ackerman-Barger.

I'm a faculty member at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

I am a registered nurse, I am a nurse educator, and I'm a nurse scientist.

One of the things that's been really nice about the research that I'm doing right

now in conjunction with Dr. Darin Latimore and Dr. Dowin Boatright from Yale University

is that we've been asking students what they think needs to happen to create more

inclusive learning environments.

And you know, of course, the first thing they say is that we need a more diverse student

and faculty body.

We also need safe spaces to have authentic conversations.

And we need to look at the curricula that a lot of times we're reinforcing stereotypes

and incorrect information.

An example of incorrect information is this notion that people of color are genetically

predisposed to diseases like heart disease and diabetes.

And what we know is that there is a maybe 30% genetic component and a 70% social determinants

of health component but we tend to focus on that 30% rather than the 70%.

And unfortunately, what people often take away from the curricula is that there's

some biological inferiority of people of color.

And so students have identified that they're hearing this over and over in their classrooms

and they as students of color know that that's not true but they're looking around at their

classmates saying, "What are they taking away from this?"

So that's another thing that we can do.

Honestly, as I've been doing this work for the last 10 or 15 years, the dialogue has

begun to change, which is really a positive thing.

Previously, I was trying to convince people that diversity was important and that there

is a problem both in education and in healthcare.

It seems like because of the political climate and just sort of the evolution of thought,

that people are beginning to understand the value of diversity and are asking for, "Okay,

now that I understand we need it and why, what do I do?" This research is an attempt

to help faculty and administrators understand, "Here's some of the things that we can

collectively do."

Seashell Wine Bottle Art DIY | Ep.4 Putting It All Together

Let's get started!

Hi, my crafty fam!

I hope you've enjoyed watching my creative process as I make this piece and I hope you've

been following along and making one of your own.

Today we'll be adding the net, the shells and all the bling to finish it off.

Grab your net because that's what we'll l be starting with.

So what I want to do is cover the areas that aren't as pretty with the net and leave

the spots with the sea foam uncovered.

Now, I didn't cover every spot because I want some of the regular color of the bottle

to show as well.

I just covered whatever I thought didn't look good.

I also knew I wanted to wrap it a certain way around the bottle to achieve the look

I was going for.

Before gluing it down permanently, I played around with it to get an idea of where I wanted

it.

Once I was sure of how I wanted it, I started to glue it down.

I placed very small amounts and pressed the net onto it.

I also cut off any excess of the net along the way.

Please be careful not to burn yourself when you do this.

I really shouldn't be doing this with my bare hands.

Please use something like the back of a brush or your scissors as I finally did lol to press

it down.

Continue to do this until you've achieved the look you're going for.

You ever wonder why it takes me so long to make a bottle, look at how picky I am at the

placement of this net and this is nothing, wait until we get to the seashells.

I am very particular and precise in where I place something.

Paying attention to the smallest of detail will play a huge part in how the end piece

will look.

Now for some people, this might take the fun out of it and it might not be for you.

That's fine too, everyone has their own way of crafting.

However, this is acutely fun for me, trying to figure out exactly where I think it would

look amazing and thinking 2 more steps ahead at what I would put on after, is what I enjoy

about crafting.

It's like trying to solve a puzzle that hasn't even been made yet.

I build it in my head as I go and make it come to life.

You know that crafting zone I'm always telling you I'm in… that's what I'm talking

about when I say that.

I completely zone out from the world and the only thing I can see is my piece.

Once you're done gluing down the net it's time to start adding your seashells.

I knew what shell I wanted at the very top of the bottle as I had bought it specifically

for that, so I started with that one.

I had already tinted it with the pearl white metallic paint and highlighted the raised

parts with the gold.

I used E6000 glue for this shell because it's big, I wanted to make sure it never fell off.

I placed glue in any of the parts I thought would touch the bottle.

Once you place it on the bottle, let it completely dry before continuing.

My editor crashed on me while I was editing, yeah that happened, and after it was back

up, I couldn't find the footage for this shell.

What I did was use clear tacky glue and glued strips of the gold beaded chain onto it.

I cut it to size and I laid them on the groves of the shell all the way along it.

For this one, we will be adding these pearls, in different sizes, on top of the shell.

I'll be placing them as if they attached themselves onto the shell.

The way barnacles do on underwater life.

And again, I'm using the E6000 here but I end up switching to the clear tacky glue

that works way better in my opinion, for aesthetic reasons, not the bond.

I add a gold acrylic rhinestone to the center of the blue shell to complete the look.

Now it's time to glue them onto the bottle.

For this, I used my hot glue gun.

Be careful not to use to much hot glue and clean up any excess.

You want your piece to look nice and clean.

From here on out it was a couple of months, yes I said a couple of months, of placing

shells, pearls, beads, rhinestones, glitter, and sand until I finished the bottle.

I didn't work on it 24/7.

I worked on it slowly to make sure that whatever I placed, was exactly what and where I wanted

it.

Now I know I said I enjoy this part of it, where I have to figure thing's out, and

I do, but, if I start to feel frustrated because I get stuck...

I walk away, and not just for a few minutes.

I walk away until I have regained my full positive mental energy to get back at it...

however long that might be.

Sometimes it takes minutes and sometimes it takes days.

What I'm saying is, take your time and enjoy the process and only work on it when you're

in a good state of mind.

If at any point you get stuck or start to get frustrated and feel like you're never

going to get it, walk away at that very moment and come back to it when you're refreshed.

Everyone has different crafting techniques, find what works for you.

Heck, I've seen people throw a bunch of stuff together, throw paint over it, slap

some highlight over that, seal it and it comes out looking absolutely amazing.

You could try that and it might be easier for you.

As long as you're having fun and getting the results you want, whichever technique

and style you use, is beside the point.

Okay, so, you can see how many different ways I've tried to go with one placement.

I wasn't feeling it, so I moved to another spot.

Sometimes that helps as well.

Like right here, I was totally feeling this look.

I was just trying to figure out what shell and color I wanted there.

In the beginning, it's a lot easier to move to another spot as you have your whole piece

to work with but as you add more, it becomes tricky because of the limited space, colors,

and angles you have to work with.

I broke that part of the shell so that it would fit better.

If you have to do this, be careful not to break the whole shell.

It didn't happen with this shell but it did happen to me with others.

...and there you have it, 20 minutes after placing the bead I finally placed the next

shell.

This continues on for day's and months until I finally finished the bottle.

I have so much footage, but I'll spare you the process and skip to each placement from

here on out.

I just wanted to show you that it's not that quick and easy for me either so don't

get down on yourself if you don't get it right away.

I usually cut all that out for viewing purposes only.

I like to decorate as I go, here I added a gold flat back gem and a pearl to fill in

the gap.

I'm still using the hot glue gun at this point but shortly after this is when I start using

the clear tacky glue and alternate between the two types of glues throughout the rest

of the bottle.

I wrapped the gold beads around the gold rhinestone using clear tacky glue.

You want to measure, cut and place it down.

You can use a set of tweezers to make it easier.

I also outlined the other gold gem.

Once I was done, I added smaller pearls around the bigger one as I did with the other gold

seashell.

I used the clear tacky glue for this part.

I dip the back of the paintbrush in the glue to pick up the pearls but I think it's time

I invest in one of those rhinestone picker-upper thigys

This is pretty much the process all the way around with the exception of different shells,

colors, sizes, and placement of everything and I eventually also start adding glitter

and sand.

Once I was done there I let it dry before moving on.

That's perfect but I wanted to add glitter.

I coated the inside with Mod Podge and added the blue glitter.

I did the same thing to the inside of this shell except I did it in gold and instead

of using loose glitter I used 2 layers of glitter glue over the metallic paint.

I used the glitter glue instead of the loose glitter because I didn't like how chunky

the loose gold one looked and the glitter glue has very fine glitter in it.

It was perfect for that top piece.

Here is where I start filling in areas with glitter, rhinestones, and pearls.

I did this so it wouldn't look so disconnected, so bare and at the same time, it added a slight

pop of shine and color that I thought it needed.

I used the hot glue gun here but again, I switched up to the clear tacky glue when doing

this again in different spots.

Here I used a toothpick to get into that tight spot to be able to arrange the pearls.

I only had the white pearls so I decided I would dip several of each size into the blue

paint and let them dry.

I'll be using them throughout the design.

For this part, I made it more complicated than it had to be so here's the easy way

to do it.

Pour some of the clear tacky paint into the seashell, add the sand and press it into the

glue.

Let that completely dry.

Add another drop of the clear tacky glue and place the pearl and let it dry.

Once it's dried, I sealed it with hairspray.

I seal it so the little crumbly bits don't fall and I use hairspray because it works

indoors, dries faster and you can't see it once it's dried.

I also touched up any spots with more sand and added a hint of loose white glitter to

it.

I then added some of the loose glitters to the top and bottom of the shells.

This was one of my favorite parts of the bottle.

And this is probably my least favorite part of the bottle... actually I hate it!

I wish I had put sand there instead.

I use a pair of scissors dedicated specifically to cutting thing's like this because it

will ruin them so if you do this, please don't use your good scissors.

I really just need to go buy some more crafting supplies but the struggle is real ya'll.

I

decided I wanted gold sand for the bottom of the bottle so I took some of the white

sand and painted it with the gold paint as you see here.

I then spread it out onto my silicone mat,

sprinkled some of the white and gold glitters onto it and

let it completely dry.

Once it's completely dry it will be very stiff and in clumps so you'll have to loosen

it up again.

I than added a little more of the white sand for contrast.

…and lastly, I added these clusters of pearls to all the ends of the net to give it that

final touch and once that dried I was FINALLY done!

And here it is all finished!

Whooo, I know I made it however I don't always like what I make but I absolutely love how

this piece came out and I know it's not for everyone, not everyone is going to like

it.

It might be too busy for some but It's exactly what I had envisioned and that's all that

matters!

It's definitely going on my favorite shelf!

Heck, it might just get a spot of its own.

Just remember that when you're creating something, do it the way you want to do it.

That's what makes yours a one of a kind, unique piece.

Not everyone has the same taste and art is subjective.

Whatever you see as beauty may not be beautiful to someone else, hence the saying, beauty

is in the eye of the beholder.

So get creative, let loose and don't be afraid to try anything when you're crafting.

Don't be held down by someone else's techniques, styles or approaches to crafting.

Do whatever feels right to you.

Yes, we can learn and get ideas from each other and yes there are certain techniques

that are pretty much by the book (decoupage) but what I'm saying is that if you find

it easier to do it another way to achieve the results you want or get the same results

or better or even take it to the next level, go for it!

Instagram Is Ruining Your Life - Duration: 7:39.

A study conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health last year took a look

at the effects of using social media on the mental health of 1,500 individuals

they discovered that out of the five most commonly used social media

platforms frequent usage in four of them Twitter Facebook snapchat and Instagram

caused mental health issues while only one YouTube had a somewhat positive

effect on mental health the four platforms that cause mental health

issues with then ranked from least damaging to most damaging and here are

the results Twitter being the least followed by

Facebook followed by snapchat and at the very bottom the social media platform

that messes with your head the most Instagram now this brings up the

question of well why why is Instagram the platform that causes the most mental

health problems and why is it that using social media platforms is ruining your

life and that's what we're gonna talk about in today's video see the thing is

our brain is constantly collecting data about our environment without us really

noticing it it does this for a variety of reasons such as making sure that

we're not in danger or to see if there aren't any resources nearby but one of

the most important reasons it does this is to check and see where we currently

stand in what's called the social hierarchy see within every social

situation within every environment that you find yourself in whether it be at

school at work or even at a nightclub there is a hierarchy a pyramid the

people at the top of this pyramid are the ones who have the most power the

ones who are the strongest the wealthiest the ones with the most

influence now our brain determines where people stand on this pyramid by

primarily looking at visual cues we look at someone's physique how muscular and

fit they are to determine physical strength we look at things that someone

owns like clothing cars and their lifestyle to determine someone's wealth

and we look at the types of people they surround themselves with to determine

their level of influence we look at all of these things to determine where the

people around us are on the pyramid but we also use this information to

determine where we are on the exact same pyramid now back in a day before the

invention of the internet before everyone started using social media

there weren't that many people to compare ourselves to where your brain

would simply look at the people that you spent the most time around and

make an estimation off of that for example when you were still in school

your brain mainly focused on the kids that attended your school now let's say

for the purposes of this video that you were a perfectly average kid back in

high school you had an average amount of friends you came from an average family

with an average income you were average looking as average as can be when your

brain compared you to the people in your surrounding it would probably look

something like this there were probably only a couple of kids were above you on

the pyramid the popular kids captains of sports teams members of student council

etc but to be honest there really weren't that many maybe only five to ten

percent of the school population at the same time they were probably also a

couple of kids who are below you on the pyramid kids who didn't have any friends

who had a hard time socializing these kids probably made up about another five

to ten percent of the school population the remaining 80% of the school

population were people who were pretty much average just like you just really

average kids from average families with really normal lives you know some might

have been slightly above and some slightly below you but most people were

pretty close to each other on the pyramid now back in the day when you

were in an environment like this you didn't feel like you were inferior to

the people around you sure there were a couple people who are better than you at

things who are above you on the pyramid but the vast majority of people were

essentially your equals at least that's how your brain saw it but fast forward

to modern times even if you're a seventeen year old kid in high school

surrounded by mostly average kids who are just like you your brain thinks that

you are competing against extremely successful people it believes that there

are extremely wealthy fit and popular people who are around your age all

around you and it believes this because of the amount of time you spend on

social media see the average American now spends on average two hours every

single day on social media however that's including adults and the elderly

a recent study actually found that the average teenager is spending around six

to nine hours on social media every single day and the thing is when you're

spending that many hours on social media your brain no longer sees your current

environment as it is it starts to believe that all of these people you see

on Instagram are people who are actually around you in real life and then it

starts to look at their lives and it compares it to your own it notices that

these people are so much better look then you mainly because of things like

lighting angles filters and Photoshop then your brain starts to believe that

there are all these people who are much more successful than you wealthier than

you it sees people your age driving fancy cars going on exotic vacations

wearing expensive clothes and then your brain starts to believe that there are

all of these people living happier lives than you hundreds and hundreds of

pictures smiling as if every single second of their lives were filled with

bliss by spending this much time on social media you trick your brain into

believing that you are no longer average that you are no longer somewhere in the

middle of the pyramid it starts to believe that you are actually in the

bottom 5% instead of having just a handful of people who are above you your

brain starts to believe that most people in the world are above you the bar is

raised almost impossibly high it seems like everyone is living close to perfect

lives and you're just here living an average one the more time you spend on

social media platforms like Instagram the lower and lower on the pyramid you

start to believe you are and that's where all of the mental health problems

stem from see the bottom of any social hierarchy is not a good place to be

this applies to humans and most other mammals if you're at the bottom of the

pyramid it means you are one of the least valuable people in the group it

means that nobody cares about you it means that you're expendable this

increases your levels of anxiety drastically it causes things like

insomnia panic attacks depression and addiction because you can't relax when

you're at the bottom it's like coming up second to last place on one of those

reality TV shows one more mistake and you're dead how can you relax and enjoy

life when you believe you're hanging off the cliff with just a couple of fingers

now of course this isn't real the truth is you're probably not at the bottom of

the social hierarchy most people around you live very average lives you're most

likely somewhere around the middle of the social hierarchy in your environment

where your brain doesn't know that because you're spending six hours every

single day in a fantasy world a world filled with models Lambos vacations and

endless smiles a world that literally no one can compete with even the most

successful people in the world can't compete no one is happy every single

second of their day as their pictures will like to have you believe and that's

why social media platforms like Instagram are ruining your life because

they force you into thinking you have to compete against a huge group of

Sepsis is the body's extreme response to

an infection. When we have an infection

we want our bodies to fight it off, but

in the case of sepsis that response has

gotten out of control.

Actually, when people have an infection and if they

were to die of an infection, it's really

because they've died of sepsis.

One of the things that makes sepsis

distinguished from routine infections is

that when a person becomes septic their

internal organs start to malfunction.

This can happen for a lot of reasons:

their blood pressure can get really low,

the kidneys can start to not work very well

Those things don't happen when you

have a usual infection.

So one of the most important

things that you can do to

try to prevent developing sepsis for

yourself and also for your family is to

keep in contact with your primary care physician.

So this is especially

important also if you have any chronic

medical conditions like diabetes,

heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease,

it's important that you follow up with your

doctor regularly so you can make sure

that those conditions are being managed

 The Tower Ballroom is right on the promenade and they're here on a Saturday night, so it's going to be rowdy

 There's nothing worse than going out late and walking into drunk people. It's like any town centre

 I say to them, come to our beautiful Stanley Park, which this year has been voted the best park in the UK

 It's got a lovely art deco cafe in there, in a listed building, there's a boating lake, miniature golf, a massive playground for the kids and fields for picnics

Last week, we had Britney Spears here.  Last year, Will Smith was here. The council have refurbished the promenade

We've got three piers, and they have fabulous rides.  I remember Blackpool being THE family place to come

When you sit on the promenade looking out to sea, you could be anywhere in the world – it's so beautiful

 There's a lot for us to be proud of.

Unconscious Bias: What Is It & How Can It Be Managed - Duration: 4:55.

My name is Piri Ackerman-Barger.

I'm a faculty member at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

I am a registered nurse, I am a nurse educator, and I'm a nurse scientist.

Unconscious bias is a process that happens in our brain that were often not really aware of.

This constant operating mechanism and it's based on the way our brain is designed.

We're taking in all of this information in any given time and our brain want to categorize

it and do something with it and the main function of the brain is to determine what is safe

and what is a threat.

So we're constantly categorizing that kind of stuff.

So the brain wants to categorize, meanwhile we're taking in all of this information

and sometimes we're taking in information and we don't even realize that we're taking

in information.

So just imagine yourself driving down the highway and you see a big billboard and there's

a beautiful woman on the billboard selling what, a car, liquor – so just from that

billboard you've taken in information on what we consider to be beautiful in this country.

Rarely do you see a woman who is not extremely thin or athletic-looking on the billboard.

So we're constantly taking in this information about what beauty looks like.

In our minds, we're also taking in information about what groups of people are familiar to

us, what groups of people are safe.

So you think about all the things that we see on the media.

How are black men, for example, portrayed in the media?

We usually see news clips of black men being dragged away by the cops.

In fact there was a television show called COPS that was about that exclusively.

So we're taking in this information about what groups of people are safe and what groups

of people are not.

So one of the things that can be really painful about that process is that our unconscious

bias does not always align with our value system.

So to think of yourself as somebody that has an unconscious bias about a particular group

of people – you may feel like, "Of course not, that's not my value system."

But the problem is that it's unconscious and these messages that are a lot more broad

and yes you are taking in that information, yes you do have unconscious bias.

And if you ignore it, you'll continue to have those biases.

What the process that we hope people will engage in is recognizing their unconscious

bias and then starting the process of rewiring your mind and having different associations

with groups of people or whatever your unconscious bias is.

So then microaggressions are the physical manifestations of that unconscious bias.

So if people don't think that nurses are as smart as doctors.

They will say, "Wow, you're so smart.

How come didn't you become a doctor?"

A lot of people ask about, "How do we engage in a process of undoing unconscious bias?"

So it may seem very simple but one of the things is to come to terms with the fact that

all of us have that and you know a lot of the work that I do is trying to convince people

that yes, I have it, and you have it, and that doesn't mean that there's something

wrong with you.

I mean, we really tend to get in this line of thinking that "If I have unconscious

bias, I'm a bad person.

I don't feel like a bad person, I don't want to be a bad person, therefore I must

not have unconscious bias."

So we're trying to reframe the way that people think about that.

So in terms of actually mitigating the unconscious bias, some of the things that we can do is

expand our known reality.

And so that the groups of people that we tend to have unconscious bias against are groups

that we're not as familiar with.

It's hard to have a close relationship with somebody in a particular group and continue

to have unconscious bias.

So we're really asking people to engage with folks that are different from you.

If you feel uncomfortable with a certain group of people, that means you probably have something

going on and this is a great time to get to know more people.

And these are authentic relationships.

Going to the grocery store and having a checker who is from a different identity than you

doesn't count.

This is like having a meaningful relationship where you both learn and grow.
