Trump fires Attorney General for going against anti-immigration policy - Duration: 2:07.

U.S. President Donald Trump fired his acting Attorney General for refusing to enforce his

controversial travel ban order.

The White House also warned senior U.S. diplomats to get in line with the policy or quit.

Kim Hyun-bin has the full story.

U.S. President Donald Trump sacked the federal government's top law enforcement official,

acting attorney general Sally Yates, on Monday after she refused to carry out the administration's

new travel ban targeting seven Muslim-majority countries.

She was a hold-over from the Obama administration,... in place until Congress confirms Trump's nominee

for attorney general, Jeff Sessions, whose Senate hearing is set for later this week.

Until then, taking Yates' place will be U.S. District Attorney Dana Boente, who was sworn

in the same day.

Trump's executive order puts a 120-day hold on bringing refugees into the country and

a 90-day ban on entry by citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

"That is illegal, that is unconstitutional, and that is immoral.

We are here to fight back."

Despite tens of thousands of protesters demonstrating against the ban, Trump argues that tougher

vetting of immigrants is needed to protect Americans against terrorism.

In a separate note, White House spokesperson Sean Spicer called on senior diplomats to

get in line with the immigration moratorium or leave their posts... after dozens of State

Department diplomats signed a memo opposing the ban.

The memo claims that the order will hamper efforts to prevent terrorist attacks and will

not achieve its stated aim of protecting the American people.

The internal memo is expected to be delivered via the dissent channel,... a State Department

mechanism used to offer alternative views on foreign policy without fear of retaliation.

The channel was first established in the 1960's during the Vietnam War to ensure the department's

senior leadership could hear alternative policy views on the war.

Combined debt issued by both gov't and public institutions tops US $784 bil. as of 2016 - Duration: 0:47.

The combined value of government bonds and special bonds sold by Korea's public institutions

reached 918 trillion won -- or 784 billion U.S. dollars -- as of the end of last year,…

surpassing the 900-trillion won mark for the first time.

The Korea Financial Investment Association said Tuesday that last year's figure is two-and-a-half

times the amount tallied just ten years ago,... when the combined figure was around 310 billion

dollars.

The rising level of debt is a concern as Korea's future generations will have to pay the money

back.

However, as the government has hinted at yet another supplementary budget this year, to

prop up slow growing economy,… the amount is likely to swell even further over the next

twelve months.

Defense chiefs of S. Korea and U.S. reaffirm plans to deploy THAAD to S. Korea - Duration: 0:55.

Our top story this morning...

The defense chiefs of South Korea and the United States have reaffirmed their plans

to deploy the U.S. THAAD missile defense system to the Korean peninsula in response to North

Korea's missile threats.

Seoul's defense ministry says Defense Minister Han Min-koo and U.S. Defense Secretary James

Mattis held telephone talks on Tuesday where they also agreed to maintain military readiness

to respond immediately to an emergency situation where North Korea carries out a provocation.

The two defense chiefs said there's a possibility North Korea could launch a strategic or tactical

provocation as it could misjudge the transition of power in Seoul and Washington.

Mattis, who is known for his hard-line views on North Korea, will arrive in Seoul on Thursday

for a two-day trip.

He and Minister Han will discuss North Korea's missile programs and other bilateral issues.

Pyongyang has resumed operations at its main nuclear facility.

State Department spokeswoman Katina Adams told Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency on Monday

local time,... that the U.S. is urging the North to "refrain from actions and rhetoric

that further raise tensions in the region" , as well as to focus on fulfilling its obligations

in the international community.

The State Department refused to confirm the nuclear activities suggested by U.S.-based

Google Doodle Honors Fred Korematsu, Activist Who Fought U.S. Internment of Japanese Americans - Duration: 13:39.

Google Doodle Honors Fred Korematsu, Activist Who Fought U.S. Internment of Japanese Americans

Civil rights activist Fred Korematsu, an Oakland native who fought the government's internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, was honored by Google Doodle on Monday on what would have been his 98th birthday.

Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the infamous Executive Order 9066, which forced about 115,000 American citizens of Japanese descent to live in designated military zones. The internment is now seen as an ugly moment in American history, in which fear outweighed tolerance.

Korematsu, the son of Japanese immigrants, refused to go into the government's internment camps and was arrested and convicted of breaking military law. With the help of the ACLU, Korematsu appealed in the landmark Supreme Court case of Korematsu v. United States, but in 1944 the court ruled against him. He and his family were then sent to the Central Utah War Relocation Center until the end of the war in 1945.

Korematsu's conviction was overturned in 1983 when evidence came to light that showed the FBI knew there was no serious evidence that America's Japanese population was helping the enemy. TIME wrote:

The Supreme Court precedent would still stand, but the judge who cleared Korematsu's conviction declared in her ruling that, in the words of the report of the Commission on Wartime Relocation, "Korematsu lies overruled in the court of history."

Korematsu remained an activist throughout his life, becoming a member of the National Coalition for Redress and Reparations, where he lobbied for a bill that would grant an official apology from the government and compensation of $20,000 for the Japanese Americans who were held in internment camps. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed the reparations legislation and redress into law.

President Bill Clinton awarded Korematsu the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. The medal is seen in the Google Doodle drawn by Sophie Diao, who is also a child of Asian immigrants. Korematsu's birthday, Jan. 30, is now officially recognized as Fred Korematsu Day in Hawaii, Virginia, California and Florida.

Trump's immigration ban cause tens of thousands to protest - Duration: 2:12.

Tens of thousands of people in the United States have been protesting against U.S. President

Donald Trump's controversial immigration restrictions.

Dozens of U.S. officials have also formally criticized the executive order.

Kim Mok-yeon has more.

President Trump's immigration order which blocks Syrian refugees from entering the United

States, and suspends immigration from six other Muslim-majority countries has led to

the deportation of hundreds of people arriving in American airports since Saturday.

Various rallies and protests have been held in city streets and squares around the country

including New York, Washington and Boston.

"I think it's ridiculous.

I mean we're founded on immigration and those folks had visas to come to this country"

Some U.S. officials have also expressed opposition to the executive order, claiming that it will

hurt U.S. businesses and alienate America's allies in the Muslim world.

A so-called "dissent cable" has been circulating among diplomats, which symbolizes a revolt

from within the U.S. bureaucracy.

"This executive order was mean spirited and un-American"

"I have asked the attorney general to begin to look at all legal remedies that we have

and avenues to allow people to continue to come to the greatest country in the entire

globe."

Voices of concern have also been emerging outside of America.

The European Union said it would never choose isolation and inequality over openness and

social equality.

Iraq, one of the seven nations included in the ban, passed a motion calling for reciprocal

action to be taken.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also criticized the order, saying the decision aimed at countering

terrorism does not justify putting people of a specific background under general suspicion.

France's foreign minister also criticized the ban, claiming that welcoming refugees

fleeing war and oppression forms part of their international obligations.

U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis is due in Seoul this week for talks with his

South Korean counterpart, Han Min-koo.

Ahead of his trip,... the two held telephone talks... with the threats posed by North Korea

dominating their discussions.

Connie Kim reports.

The defense chiefs of South Korea and the United States have reaffirmed their plan to

bring the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system to the Korean peninsula in

response to North Korea's missile threats.

Seoul's defense ministry said Defense Minister Han Min-koo and U.S. Defense Secretary James

Korea's escalating threat and acknowledged the need to strengthen cooperation on North

Korea policies.

The two defense chiefs also said there's a possibility North Korea could launch a strategic

or tactical provocation as it could misjudge the transition of power in Seoul and Washington.

Han and Mattis agreed to deter North Korea provocations through Washington's provision

of a strong extended deterrence and to maintain a strong military readiness posture to respond

immediately in an emergency situation.

Pyongyang has been ratcheting up tensions as Kim Jong-un announced in a New Year's address

that the regime is in the final stages of test-firing an intercontinental ballistic

Acknowledging the growing threat from the North, Mattis will make his first overseas

trip as defense secretary to Tokyo and Seoul this week to discuss North Korea's missile

India's Proposed Naval Fighter Jet Procurement Could Be Worth US$12 Billion | 720p | - Duration: 2:24.

The Indian Navy's January 17 Request For Information for the procurement of 57 naval fighters could be worth US$12 billion for the selected foreign supplier.

India needs the fighter jets for its second aircraft carrier being locally built at the Cochin shipyard. The carrier along with the existing INS Vikramaditya

which houses only MiG-29 K fighters are expected to be the bulwark of the Indian Navy's force projection.

The price of the contract has been estimated on the cost of each carrier borne jet at around US$200 million each if it were a western fighter

or under US$100 million if it were to be a Russian jet.

The likely contenders for the contract can be Boeing's F/A-18 Super Hornet, F-35C Carrier Based Fighter jet

a naval version of the Dassault Rafale, Russian Su-33 that were used in the recent Syrian operations and another Russian-

carrier based fighter, the MiG-29K Fulcrum fighter jet. India operates a total of sixteen MiG-29Ks from the carrier INS Vikramaditya

and the navy is expected to take deliveries of all 45 MiG-29K fighters, by the end of this year.

Saab has earlier offered its Sea Gripen, the naval version of Gripen NG to India. The Sea Gripen is intended for both CATOBAR and STOBAR aircraft carriers.

Sea Gripen is the only aircraft that fits with the intended Request For Information's terms

The selection of the aircraft will depend on what launch system will be used aboard the new carries currently under construction.

CIA papers reveal China's Nuclear Free Pass to Pakistan

Highlights Recently declassified CIA files testify to

the depth of the Pak-China military relationship built over decades.

US suspected that China gave Pakistan the design of N-bomb and enriched uranium.

US notes that China did not ask Pak to open its nuclear installations to IAEA inspections.

Recently declassified CIA files testify to the depth of the Pakistan-China military relationship

built over decades and also highlights how Beijing was willing to risk its own nuclear

cooperation with US to boost the nuclear ambitions of 'all weather friend' Pakistan.

In the files, the US notes that China did not ask Pakistan to open its nuclear installations

to IAEA inspections, after inking a nuclear agreement with the latter.

The text of the agreement is pretty anodyne, focusing on non-military nuclear technology,

radio-isotopes, medical research and civilian power technology.

By this, the US notes, China wanted to develop a nuclear export market in Pakistan in "nonsensitive"

areas.

This would "reassure" countries like US which were apprehensive about Pakistan's nuclear

designs.

"We cannot rule out the possibility that China may feel it will be easier to cooperate clandestinely

with Pakistan behind the smokescreen of IAEA-safe guarded cooperation activity in non-sensitive

areas."

By 1983-84, it had become alarmingly clear to the US that the China-Pakistan nuclear

cooperation went much deeper.

In February 1983, a US congressional committee was informed by the CIA that the US had proof

China and Pakistan were talking nuclear weapons manufacture.

CIA also stated they knew China had handed over the design of a nuclear bomb tested by

China in Lop Nor, which incidentally was its fourth nuclear test and during which, US believed,

a "senior Pakistani official" was present.

The US suspected China had handed over enriched uranium to Pakistan as well.

Basically it meant that China had not only handed over the design of the bomb to Pakistan,

it had also given the necessary material.
