Letters to an Asexual #47 (Religion and Asexuality) - Duration: 33:40.

Hey folks, it's swankivy, and I'm here to bring you another episode of Letters to an

Asexual.

This is number 47.

Um, and, I'm, uh, not feeling super good these days and, you know, as a result of that, I

am making a video without having put a lot of thought or preparation or energy into what

I'm gonna say, so I hope you'll forgive me for making this a kinda sloppy video.

Uh, but I'm not really gonna have another time when it's convenient to record this and

I still wanna bring something out this month so um, I'm just gonna take a less prepared

crack at this.

Uh, my topic today that I would like to discuss is asexuality and religion.

And your perspective on your orientation if you're an asexual person, uh, may be affected

by your religion.

You may have different perspectives even within the same religion, just based on who you are

and how your religion figures into your life if you have one, and then also how people

in your life who maybe, like, religious family members or religious significant others, or

just, um, people in general looking at asexuality from the--from a religious perspective.

Uh, it will vary hugely among different religions and different people within those religions,

and it will also be influenced somewhat by whether they consider asexuality to be, like,

an "alternative sexuality," so to speak, or whether they consider it to be basically the

same as being straight by default, like some people do even though that's not really accurate.

So um, again, because I am doing this kinda off the cuff, I hope that you'll forgive me

for also fumbling around using my own book to help me, 'cause I've written about this

before, and so I'm just gonna look at the religion chapter while I do this so that I

don't leave something out that I wanted to talk about.

Um, so, gonna talk about that, but, uh, first I would like to say that, um, there are some

religions that actually mention something that could be interpreted as, um, a position

on asexuality, and one of them, believe it or not, is mainstream Christianity that uses

the New Testament as its Bible, so um, I think I wanna start there, lemme see if I can find,

uh, the religion section in my book here so that I can read a quote to you.

Um, all right.

Religious stuff.

Um.

So when I first started talking about the intersection of, like, religious perspectives

and asexuality for my book, um, I did, I started with, uh, Christian perspectives just because

that was so commonly discussed in my community, about um, whether it was just gonna be assumed

that, uh, asexual people are people who stay virgins and that isn't that a good thing in

a lot of religious communities, that they want you to remain a virgin and that it makes

you "pure."

And I mean, that kinda has its own, uh, problematic aspects, the idea of "purity" being associated

with sex, and morality, but um, the problem is there's a flip side of that, which is that

there's commandments associated with getting married, and they suggest that when you are

in a marriage, that you're supposed to have sex, and that it's, uh, wrong to "deny" your

partner sexual union in the hopes of having children, and you know, that has so many problems

with it, partly because some people want to be married and not have sex, and also because

it suggests that marriage is, uh, something that should necessarily be formed for the

purpose of producing children, and some people can't have children, um, or they shouldn't

because of health reasons or other reasons, so reserving marriage for the production of

children has all kinds of problems with it, but in the New Testament, there is a--there's

a quote from, uh, from Corinthians 7:8-9, in the New International Version, I'm reading,

I'm looking that up, um, where I guess it was Paul said, this is a quote, "Now to the

unmarried and the widows, I say, it is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do, but if

they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn

with passion."

And he also continues by saying, "I say this as a concession, not as a command.

I wish that all of you were as I am.

But each of you has your own gift from God.

One has this gift, another has that."

And he's suggesting there that if you--if you wanna have sex and you can't control yourself,

it's better to marry the person that you wanna have sex with so that that won't be a "sinful"

union, and if you have beliefs associated with how marriage should figure into your

religion, ya know, you may be able to use that in--you know, if you are a Christian

person and you're asexual, and your community or your parents or somebody in your--in your

circle is giving you issues about how this is against God, you can quote Paul, and say

"ya know, look, he, he says this straight out that asexual people exist, or at least

people that don't desire sex," um, you know, it's oversimplified and problematic in its

own way, but this is a straight-up acknowledgment that some people who don't have that desire

exist in the world.

But unfortunately it seems like it's, you know, staying unmarried and not having sex,

those are two things that are lumped together and that marriage is always for being in a

union with someone and having sex with them, so you know, it'll--it'll have limited usefulness,

I guess, if you're using Biblical support to defend your orientation for somebody who

may find that to be important, um, but it is there, I mean, that's a--that's a straight-up

quote.

And it's in a couple different places.

So um, I uh, I also wanna say that chastity is prized in a lot of, uh, dialogues that

are in religious communities.

But at the same time, they seem to have it centered around waiting the right person.

The assumption is generally that you're either going to find someone and eventually give

yourself to them in a sexual union, presumably for the purpose of having children, or you're

going to remain celibate and you're gonna be doing that in a religious context.

And um, that you're gonna be doing it to devote yourself to God, or you know, they say "become

a nun!"

The, uh, suggestion that I should become a nun for some reason, because of not having

sex has, I mean, I've heard that so many times, it's ridiculous.

And I'm like, "Well, wouldn't the fact that I'm not Catholic have something to do with

why I shouldn't do that?"

But no, they associated it so strongly with celibacy that they think that's, like, the

primary focus.

I mean, I know it's a joke and all, but anyway, uh.

So, I actually know someone that wanted to become a nun when they were younger, um, and

they said that they were thinking about taking the first steps to become a nun, and they

were told by somebody who was a nun that they should not do it.

Because, um, the abstention from sex is supposed to be a sacrifice, so if it's not a sacrifice

for you, if it's just a natural part of what you would be doing anyway, then they say this

particular nun said to them, to my friend, that that makes you ill-suited for being a

nun.

So I mean, there's an example of someone in the church rejecting someone for their asexuality.

Or at least for their lack of sex drive.

It gets very mixed up because we're not real clear on what exact part of it they're rejecting

or that they have problems with.

Uhh.

So, um, so I have also had contact with people who, you know, as they move into the age where

they're "supposed to be" settling down with a marriage partner, their families will get

aggressive about trying to do matchmaking with them for someone that they think is a

good match, and uh, they'll start to create a hostile atmosphere in the home or in the

family unit, to uh, encourage that person to accept, uh, these, um, aggressive situations

where they're trying to make them date them or make them get married when they may not

want to.

And um, someone I had direct contact with was saying that they were gonna, they--they.

their family was threatening to uh, kick them out of the house if they didn't obey what

the parent wanted, um, in this specific thing, they were treated like they were a, uh, spoiled

child who was refusing to honor their parents' wishes.

And uh, this was offered in a religious context as well.

So in that case, you hear people say asexual people don't have enough in common with, you

know, LGBT folks to be joining these communities because they don't face the possibility of

violence or rejection from inside of their family, but I've heard stories like that a

bunch of times.

I also heard from somebody who said that um, they tried to come out to their parents, and

their dad was so angry about it, um, that they had to pretend it was a joke until a

couple of months down the road their dad finally, like, calmed down and stopped harassing them

about it, um, and you know, they were threatening to kick them out of the house because they

said this, and they had to pretend it was a joke.

Um, so.

Huh.

Long story short, um, there are plenty of accounts I've heard from people in my community

who have had a religious perspective informing aggression, hostility, rejection within mostly

traditional families, you know, where they think the person is, they're rejecting their

culture or they're not adhering to commandments.

And um, you know, now I'm gonna go on to a related religion on that note.

Um.

I come from a Jewish background and the Jewish side of my family, which you know, is my dad's

side, um, my mom converted before I was born so, because it was, as it's told to me it

was important to my dad's side to have Jewish children, so I was raised Jewish, and I didn't

really hear perspectives like this, I guess because they weren't incredibly religious,

but you know, my grandfather was a cantor, it's kind of, it's like a religious singer,

if you don't know what that is, in the temple, so I mean, he was basically clergy.

Um, and so there was some of this perspective in my background, but I never heard anything

about perspectives on, like, marriage or anything like that but it's a very, um, there's a very

specific commandment for Jewish people that, you know they're supposed to get married and

replace themselves and their spouse.

They're supposed to try to have a boy and a girl, and then they've fulfilled this.

Um.

It's raining here.

Sorry.

Florida has, um, it's summer right now as I'm making this, June, and Florida has afternoon

thunderstorms almost every day.

Nice little trivia for you about Florida weather.

It's really weird.

Anyway.

Um, let me see.

Um, in my book I wrote um, "in traditional Judaism propagation of the people is of primary

importance, and some doctrines even say celibacy breaks religious law since it constitutes

failure to fulfill the divine command to have children."

Which I footnoted and the quote is "Every man is obligated to marry a woman in order

to reproduce.

Anyone who is not having children is as if they were killers."

So um, and of course also the "Be fruitful and multiply," that's from the Old Testament,

so that's uh, a perspective that comes out of the Jewish religion is um, you're supposed

to do everything that you can to put more of your group onto the planet.

And uh, regardless of whether you have children, um, you know, asexuality is linked in a lot

of people's minds to childlessness, and um, it's almost like it's, uh, across many many

cultures there's this almost humorously framed idea of parents flipping out over their children

NOT GIVING THEM GRANDCHILDREN, HOW DARE YOU.

But you know, it's a real thing that even though they kinda make a joke out if it, you

can, you can really get harassed by your parents and taught that you're selfish if you don't

have kids.

So um, I mean that has its roots in a lot of different religions.

Um, by the way, while I was researching for this book, you know, I talked to a bunch of

people in the community when I was trying to figure out what perspectives I may not

have considered that I should consider, and one of the most contributed-to sections was

this section on religion, where people from different backgrounds that um, I was not a

part of had given me thoughts on it.

And one of those was, um, some of my Muslim readers had given me some perspectives.

And um, one of the quotes that was offered to me was regarding how um, Islam says um,

my book says, "though marriage is emphasized as expected, there's still room for celibacy,

but similarly it's recommended only for those who don't marry."

And the quote there is "If one's healthful condition, integrity of heart, and peace of

soul reside in celibacy, then that is better for him, since these are things that are desired

of marriage.

If one can reach these without marriage, then celibacy causes no harm."

Um, and I can, I can quote these and their sources in the info of this video if you'd

like.

Um, so, then there was some talk about, um, what is essentially like, atheistic religions,

um, many forms of, like, Buddhism are more like philosophy, I guess, they're practiced

that way at least, they're not focused on a, a deity, um, and, uh, you can kinda go

back and forth on that, it's--there's lots of different kinds of Buddhism, so um, some

of the ones that have been popularized in the West are not necessarily, they might not

even be recognizable to people who actually practice them in the East, but um, I have

a uh, a reference in the book about um, how uh, this is something that I actually heard

from someone who claimed to be Buddhist, who said, um, that a--a very similar to my friend

who said that they were not uh, permitted to become a nun because of this, um, cleansing

oneself of sexual desire is you know, part of what you do to try to make yourself have

fewer desires and wants, and therefore more peace.

Um, and if that part comes to you naturally, then it's, it's not something that you learned.

It's not a lesson that you undertook and purged from yourself.

Um, so it--it may be perceived as being "too easy," and therefore not valid.

So um, anyway um, what's really bizarre to me is that there are some people who are accepting

of same-sex marriage and queer relationships and sometimes even trans folks, they're accepting

of that but they're not accepting of asexuality.

And that's weird to me, when they're like that, but usually what will happen is if you

try to invoke, like, "You wouldn't say that to a gay person!"

"You wouldn't deny a gay person--" usually yeah they would.

Usually those things go hand in hand.

Not all the time, but most of the time, if you dig around for the person's perspectives,

you'll find that they actually are transphobic.

They actually are homophobic.

Um, you know, or they, they may be accepting and claim that because they don't "hate" those

groups then therefore they're accepting, but actually they still believe that we all have

a disorder because everything that does not contribute to reproduction is by definition

a biological disorder.

And I've heard that so many times too, and more often than not, it comes from pseudo-scientific

people.

People who think that they're spouting biological perspectives when you know, a lot of the people

who actually study sexuality that I've had contact with, they have no such perspective.

But um, you would kind of think that these things would come more often out of religious

perspectives, but they don't.

They're much more often offered by wannabe scientists who don't really understand science

either but think that they're objective or think that they're very rational.

And a lot of times they're really not.

Let's see, what else do I have here.

Um, I'm gonna give you a quote from, uh, one of the other asexual activists who--whose

writings I like.

Um, here's a quote about chastity in association with asexuality and morality.

Quote, "If asexuals are chaste, it's not usually because they hold it up as a virtue.

It's because they would rather be chaste, regardless of whether or not they happen to

think it is a virtue.

I certainly do not regard chastity as a virtue.

Furthermore, like many other asexuals, I am not chaste.

I find it really offensive to stuff these values into my mouth and pretend that's what

I asked for."

And that leads me to another perspective, is that so many people will uh, assume that

you're religious, that you're subscribing to some kind of chastity vow if you say that

you're asexual, they'll associate that with not having--not being sexually active, and

also thinking that you're pure, and also thinking that you're better than other people.

I hope you can still see me in the camera, 'cause now I'm laying down.

I'm feeling like crap, sorry.

Um, so let's see what else do I have, um.

Oh yeah.

I should probably talk about mine.

Um, so it's hard for me to really nail down a, uh, specific "religion" that I would say

I belong to, um, but I identify as like an atheistic Pagan.

And so, Paganism is definitely something that I, um, relate to and, uh, I don't know if

I would say it's a practice for me anymore, um, I have explored some practices of sort

of a--an eclectic take on Paganism, but um, I think it's just more of a philosophy for

me, that I like the idea of being connected to the past and being connected to the Earth.

And so some of the holiday celebrations that I do will just be mostly about redecorating

my house to reflect the seasons and acknowledging the cycle and the spiral of the year.

I like to bake things that are seasonal.

Uh, but I don't worship anything.

I don't, like, I think of, like, Gods and Goddesses and whatnot as sort of a celebration

of humanity's tendency to personalize and humanize things, um, and uh, anyway, in a

lot of uh, Pagan circles, you will find open and accepting groups and practices uh, for

a lot of diverse sexualities.

Um, you don't find a whole lot of homophobic-by-nature uh, like, Wiccan groups or Pagan groups.

Occasionally you will find some homophobia and transphobia in, uh, maybe something that

would be certain stripes of Dianic Witchcraft and whatnot because, like, they might be focused

on Goddess worship and assume that you have to have been born with a vagina to be "really

a woman," and there's a lot of focus in certain very traditional types of witchcraft and certain

kinds of Paganism on male/female polarity, like that there's a Goddess and a God, and

therefore all of nature is masculine or feminine, and while I can appreciate some of that as

uh, symbolism, I think it can be dangerous to divide everything like that, especially

with people.

And associating reproduction with sexual reproduction, not all reproduction IS sexual in nature.

So ya know, not supporting same-sex or uh, not supporting nonbinary people um, and any

relationships that they might have, uh, I don't think that there's much of an excuse

for that, um, using a nature religion to justify it.

But in any case, um, a lot of times you'll be able to find nature religions that are

accepting of asexuality, but because there is this focus on sexual celebrations, like

there's, there's sometimes symbolic or even literal sex in certain rituals depending on

the type of group that you go to.

There's a lot of, you know, um, a lot of symbolism that is very sexual, and uh, sometimes they

will look at you if you're asexual or you're chaste, um, they will look at you as if you're,

"Oh, you're a prude."

And that you're not in touch with whatever uh, natural inclinations that they think you

should have.

Um, so sometimes you can find, um, outright hostility in certain kinds of Pagan groups,

and again I'm NOT saying all.

Just like I'm not saying all with Christian groups and other more traditional religious

groups, you're not gonna find it everywhere.

You're always gonna be able to find uh, examples of more accepting, more tolerant religious

groups.

But um, I have heard of some people having a hard time in a group when they've joined

and they found everything was pretty cool until they disclosed that they were asexual

and then people treated them like, "Oh, you must not be in touch with your real sexual

self, your spiritual self, your Earthly self, you need to get past that, and you need to

have sex, because it's natural."

Um, so I mean you do sometimes see that and even if you don't see direct pressure to have

sex yourself, sometimes these communities can be very sexualized.

And um, you know, they'll treat you like your failure to participate or you being squicked

by it in any way is you know, judgment of them or, ya know, it can just be hard for

an asexual person to be in a very sexualized space of any kind.

And ya know, come to think of it, that has been a complaint among ya know, not just asexual

people, but people in general who wanna participate in queer activism.

Sometimes spaces are--have become very sexualized in response to not being allowed to have that,

not being allowed to be proud of it, or not being allowed to express it in other places

where it's either not safe or you're just treated like you're gross.

Um, so these spaces sometimes become very sexualized, and then they may not be friendly

for certain people who may be sexual assault survivors, people who may be from backgrounds

that they find that very distasteful, people who are asexual, people who you know, may

have a problem with it for some other reason.

You know, it's just, there are all kinds of ways that you can end up encountering that

in queer spaces that uh, can be kinda similar to what I'm talking about with Pagan spaces

being very sexualized.

And they're doing that for a different reason, they're doing it to celebrate, but sometimes

they can make it unfriendly to people like us.

Um, you know, if you happen to be one of the people that is uh, not comfortable with that.

And I'm, I'm kind of one of those people, that I'm comfortable with it theory but I

don't personally actually wanna be involved or probably don't wanna see too much of it.

So you know, I would be, I'd be more of the, um, perspective that I should remove myself

from those types of groups if I don't like what they're doing.

Um, but sometimes if that's the only thing available for--and it's serving other needs

that you have, sometimes it can be hard to have that kind of stuff going on in your--in

your space and you, you uh, are uncomfortable with it or something.

So um, let's see, um, well I'm sure that there are uh, perspectives in um, re--both religions

that I haven't covered and uh, perspectives in religions that I HAVE covered that I haven't

covered that particular perspective, but I think I've run out of juice here, and I've

probably been talking for a while so I think I'm gonna end the video here, and you can

feel free to talk in my comments if you have stuff that you wanna talk about, about uh,

maybe your own experiences with religion and asexuality, and um, I hope that um, you've

been okay with, uh, watching me kinda fumble my way through this video.

Uh, because I know that it's not very good quality and that I'm really just not in too

good a shape to be doing it right now, so I hope you've been able to bear with me here

and um, hopefully next time I make a video I'll be feeling better.

So.

I'll see y'all next time.

Bye!

Can I just rant for a bit? Today was mostly bad. - DragoNate Daily Vlog - Friday 2017-06-23 - Duration: 6:51.

okay can I just like rant a little bit because today wasn't the best of days it

kind of sucked for a lot of different reasons well first I was in the middle

of editing it was it was in the middle of rendering right I just finished

editing the darn thing it was in the middle of rendering it was like halfway

through I had already started typing in notepad the description right and all of

a sudden boom there was an explosion outside like literally an explosion

sound like a gunshot or something like I don't know what the heck it was and

instantly as soon as that noise happened my computer just like shut off the

screens my monitors went black my computer just shut off and I'm just like

what the I'm freaking out like I'm like what is going on so I'm like wandering

through the house I'm like what do I do right now I'm trying to call my mother

and my phone wasn't even working like it if went even connect to called my mother

and I'm going downstairs into the basement into the dark basement which I

don't like where there's sometimes bugs and spiders which I just don't like and

like the circuit breaker is way in the corner of this darkroom powers out

throughout the entire flippin house I grabbed a flashlight go back down and in

the meantime I'm trying to call my mother and it's not working

I I go and I look at the thing I'm like yeah no I don't want to go in there

because it's dark it's gross bla bla so I call my mother I think a second or

third time and it actually went through so I was totally freaked out I had no

clue what was going on turns out it was just an electrical box

outside that had exploded because of animals so there's probably a squirrel

out there that either turned to goo or is crispy which sounds like a lot of fun

and I want to go find the thing and slap across the face a couple of times so

needless to say I didn't think I was going to be able to livestream today I

did end up being able to they got the power back on within an hour so that's

all lovely and good but in the meantime because it's like an hour before the

live streams usually start I'm like oh my god I have to tell people somehow so

I'm using my my mobile data which can't really forward if we go

over that upload a quick update video saying hey guess what the power is out

sorry guys can't livestream today probably so bla bla bla and YouTube

wasn't letting me upload it for some dumb reason

so of course I'm getting mad with YouTube like what the heck is going on

with this when it turns out and I found this oh it's a little bit later all I

have to do is change something in the settings and then it worked so yeh got

that figured out then the power came on at like 10 after 9 and you know all was

good yay lovely it's like 50 minutes until the

livestream I still need to shower I didn't able I wasn't able to do my

workout today which kind of sucks I miss a day and then as I I don't do it and I

still need to make another update video telling you guys that the power is back

on but it's going to take like a half hour for me to record a video with my

phone plug it into my computer because my phone still has issues connecting to

that and then take it from my computer and put it on YouTube and do all the

blah blah blah I need to do on there so I did it from my phone again and this

time it worked it got up there but it got stuck at like 99 percent uploading

and just frustrated me and everything froze everything on my phone froze so

now I'm getting mad at my phone I threw my phone into a cardboard box then

everything started working I got an email around lunchtime today as well on

up from Teespring the thing that I have my charity shirts through saying

that the one campaign was removed due to copyright infringement which I think I

know why it's because of the word Jedi so oopsy-daisy but you know it's like

it's completely ridiculous five months and nothing happens now all of a sudden

boom taking down entirely and if it's not the word in the word Jedi then it's

the picture and if it's a picture it's a picture of myself so no you know one can

claim that but my freaking self thank you the cat pooped on the floor twice

today and I had to go and get mad at him twice today we still haven't been able

to find a different good kitty litter that he is comfortable with but at the

same time we can't actually afford to do that right now

anyway the one that Xingcat mentioned we can't even find Lil Kitta

you mentioned sparkly kitty litter which would be really really nice and I would

love to get that too but you know it just feels like almost everything was a

complete disaster today but enough of the bad things I think that's probably

all of them I think I listed like everything there for the most part

anyway but the day wasn't totally bad so the live stream went well it was great

talking with you guys mom and I went to Starbucks and we got a delicious new

cream frappe thing I got a berry one mom got a mango one and both of those were

absolutely delicious I got the one video done for one of the orders I got on

Fiverr I started working on another video for that for another order on

Fiverr as well and there's another opportunity also coming through fiber

which is really cool also also a couple more of you guys joined the discord

server so that's great as well and despite not being able to work out and

not having any naps I am surprisingly for being after

midnight right now not extremely tired but this still isn't a good thing

because I'm going to be busy tomorrow we're going to be going training of

course and I still need to get the good sleep but yeah so this day was mostly

garbage but there were still some positive things that happened today and

I think it's important to focus on those things rather than the negative to be

honest the power outage didn't actually piss me off or make me mad or anything

yes it scared me when it first happened because I'm just like like I heard this

Gowdy joins legacy of South Carolina committee chairmen in an age where pork deliverymightnotmatter. - Duration: 8:58.

WASHINGTON — There's no denying U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy will enjoy additional clout at

the helm of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Beyond bragging rights, however, it's not clear whether the Spartanburg Republican's

constituents back home will receive any tangible benefits from his new role.

It's not considered a pork-delivery assignment. Gowdy's committee — which he was put in

charge of with the pending the retirement of U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah — is

tasked with policing waste, fraud and abuse in the executive branch and federal agencies.

It has a more abstract mission than some of the other panels with more parochial links,

such as the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, or the Committee on Armed Services

that during the last century helped build South Carolina into a military might state.

U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, R-Mount Pleasant, who sits on the committee and thought briefly

about seeking the chairmanship himself, said he would have pitched his constituents on

the panel's ability to "look under the hood and see where taxpayer money is, in fact,

spent.

"If there's robust oversight of Department of Defense, and the fact they don't have

audited books … maybe there would be some savings in North Charleston or some implications

for preconditioned ships or fighters out of Beaufort," Sanford added.

According to congressional expert Norm Ornstein, Gowdy's chairmanship might be more of a

vanity title than anything else.

"As a chair, you're almost by definition a member of the leadership team, and that

means you're likely in the room when major decisions are made about what priorities you're

gonna pursue, and you kind of have more access to further interests back home," Ornstein

explained. "Maybe it gives you a little bit of an area-wide ego boost, but it's

symbolic more than anything else."

In an interview with The Post and Courier, Gowdy said his committee's value to the

state "depends on how I handle the responsibilities."

Ultimately, the committee itself might not matter. Chairmanships across Congress just

aren't what they used to be.

Bringing home the bacon

Until the mid-2000s, committee chairmen wielded a significant amount of power by way of earmarks,

the federal dollars a member of Congress could designate for a specific initiative in his

or her district or state.

The practice was done away with in 2011, stigmatized by those who had abused the system. But before

that time, for most members of Congress, securing an earmark was only as easy as befriending

— or actually being — a person in power, be it a member of leadership or, more likely,

a chairman of a committee with hometown relevance.

Since 1950, not including Gowdy, there have been seven members of the S.C. congressional

delegation who have served as committee chairmen. One, U.S. Rep. John McMillan, was chairman

of the now-defunct House Committee on the District of Columbia.

But the six other chairmen wielded gavels of Capitol Hill committees where the issues

on the table could directly benefit the Palmetto State.

As chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee between 1973 and 1974, U.S. Rep.

William Jennings Bryan Dorn helped secure a major expansion for a VA hospital in Columbia

that now bears his name.

U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings was one of Congress' most prolific earmarkers. He was chairman

of the Senate Budget Committee between 1980 and 1981, then the Senate Commerce, Science

and Transportation Committee from 1987-1995 and 2001-2003.

Three South Carolinians have overseen the House or Senate Armed Services Committees,

starting with U.S. Rep. L. Mendel Rivers from 1965 until his death in 1970.

U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond and U.S. Rep. Floyd Spence were both chairmen of the Senate and

House Armed Services Committees, respectively, during the same 1995-1999 window. This meant

South Carolina, with its significant military presence, had an outsized influence in the

producing the National Defense Authorization Act each year.

In the House, Spence had an additional advantage, according to his longtime chief of staff,

Craig Metz. Spence, said Metz, was close friends with U.S. Rep. C. W. Bill Young, R-Fla., who

was the senior defense appropriator.

"Young said, 'Whatever Floyd authorizes, it will be appropriated,'" said Metz,

meaning that Young would ensure the Appropriations Committee provided funding for all of the

projects Spence prioritized in the National Defense Authorization Act each year.

South Carolina is home to military bases, from Beaufort to Charleston, Columbia and

Sumter.

"We would coordinate with other members of the delegation and military people, too,

so we could be consistent in trying to do as much as we could for South Carolina, the

bases and different missions we had there," Metz explained. "We were very successful

in that."

None of these members of Congress were in office in 2010, when longtime House Budget

Chairman John Spratt, a Democrat, lost re-election in that year's Republican wave.

He had, in part, become a casualty of the declining interest in committee chairmen and

what value they had for their districts when public opinion of Washington had fallen in

such low regard.

"Spratt always ran as, 'as budget chairman, budget ranking member, I've delivered for

the 5th District,'" recalled Nu Wexler, who worked for Hollings, the S.C. Democratic

Party and Spratt's final re-election race. "There was a point in the 2010 campaign

where we realized that some voters equated 'delivering for the district' with government

spending ... some voters saw that as just government waste."

A different kind of chairman

Josh Kimbrell, the Spartanburg GOP chairman and a radio talk show host, said Gowdy was

joining the ranks of outspoken conservative congressmen representing the "Fighting Fourth,"

the GOP stronghold anchored by Greenville and Spartanburg.

Before tea party star Jim DeMint jumped to the U.S. Senate, he represented the 4th Congressional

District. Prior to his revival as a moderate environmentalist, 4th District Rep. Bob Inglis

was calling for then-President Bill Clinton's impeachment.

"We've always wanted our congressmen to have an outsized influence," Kimbrell said.

"This is a district that wants people to go fight the status quo, fight the way government

works."

Gowdy, a former prosecutor and solicitor, is already a household name thanks to his

chairmanship of the temporary committee to investigate the 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate

in Benghazi, Libya. The panel uncovered Hillary Clinton's private email server and became

a partisan lighting rod.

Some South Carolina Republicans might be hoping for Gowdy to take advantage of the Oversight

and Government Reform Committee's far-reaching jurisdiction to probe other hot-button issues

that get regular airtime on cable news. But Gowdy indicated that his constituents shouldn't

expect the panel to be as visible as the Benghazi Committee, or as it has been under previous

Republican chairmen.

Instead, he said he'll focus more on the "reform" aspect of the committee's jurisdiction.

He can't offer earmarks or protection of specific parochial interests, but what he can give

his constituents is a congressman with a reputation of being fair.

"Success, to me, is having people say, 'That was a fair hearing,' (and) 'even though reasonable

minds can differ on how they would address this issue, this was an issue worth highlighting,'"

Gowdy said. "What is not successful to me is, 'Go find the most recent headline and

then chase it by having a full committee hearing.'"

As for what he's heard from people back home so far, Gowdy described the response

as fairly subdued.

"Everyone is incredibly polite on both sides of the political spectrum," he said. "Those

who follow politics closely will say, 'It's a difficult assignment.'"

Junho was caught by an octopus?! [2 Days & 1 Night - Season 3 / 2017.06.25] - Duration: 12:08.

(Meanwhile, Siyoon is helping Jongmin out.)

You're good at everything.

Let's go.

Place them first, and then put them on.

Which way is the front?

Hold on.

- Come on. / - My gosh.

(Siyoon dives in first.)

- What now? / - My goodness.

(Since he's done this before,)

(he makes his way down deep.)

(He's off to fish first!)

What's taking you so long?

(Meanwhile, here's Jongmin.)

Come on in.

(Will he dive before the end of the day?)

Is there something out there?

Ma'am, did you catch something?

- Over here. / - Here?

I caught an octopus. Look.

(She caught an octopus!)

- That's huge. / - Gosh.

(Junho is amazed.)

(Taehyun remembers being sick last week.)

How on earth did you catch it?

Look, I caught an octopus.

That's amazing.

Ma'am, you're the best.

(Murmuring)

Here.

Come over here.

(Defconn is caught off guard.)

(Take that!)

(She's satisfied.)

It's an octopus man.

(Defconn with an octopus hat)

- Give Junho one too. / - No, I'm good.

Please don't come near me.

(Junho's survival instincts kick in.)

(No, please don't!)

(It serves you right.)

Look at me. Look what she did to me.

Get this off me.

Give me that.

(Why not?)

(I hope you two grow closer.)

Don't do this!

- Look. These are the suckers. / - I want to as well.

- Really? / - Here.

- I can't see a thing. / - What?

- I can't see a thing. / - Clean your goggles.

- How? / - Clean it with water.

Oh, I see.

Clean it with water and then put it on.

Like this. Slip it on your arm.

All right.

(He puts it on like she told him to.)

(He stares into the water.)

It's a sea urchin. I saw it.

- Catch it. / - I saw a sea urchin.

- I'll catch it. / - Sure.

(Are you that happy?)

Go ahead.

(He dives to catch the sea urchin.)

(Did he catch it?)

It won't budge. I can't grab it.

(She seems to love how cowardly Jongmin is.)

This one is easier to catch.

Come on over.

- Do you see the conch? / - Not yet?

(Will he succeed this time?)

It's too big.

The sea urchin is too big!

(She laughs at everything he does.)

You can do it.

(Meanwhile, Taehyun explores the sea.)

(Look at that.)

(A shoal of fish swims right past him.)

(Taehyun enjoys the relaxation below the surface.)

(Even though he has immunity, he took over the waters.)

(What's that?)

(An octopus is hiding in camouflage.)

(Taehyun misses it and swims past it.)

- Where can I find an octopus? / - A conch!

- An octopus. / - I have a conch!

(Thank goodness...)

What's that?

(Meanwhile, Siyoon has been awfully quiet.)

Siyoon, have you caught anything?

- No. / - No, not yet.

Look closely. There are a lot down there.

(Sea urchin)

(Sea urchins)

(Conch)

(So many can be spotted.)

(Siyoon just swims past.)

(Meanwhile, the female diver catches a sea urchin.)

(Siyoon is practically lost at sea.)

(Meanwhile, she catches another one.)

(Siyoon is unlucky once again.)

(We'll lose daylight at this rate.)

(I can't let that happen.)

A conch. I caught a conch.

I caught one. I've cleared the mission.

Bring it over.

This?

(Will he catch another?)

- What are you doing? / - Stop it.

(Joonyoung stares from a distance.)

- Hold on. / - Don't you think this is too shallow?

(It only comes up to my ankles.)

Bring it here.

Try somewhere else. Like over there.

(Only Siyoon needs to catch something now.)

(She pushes him down to help him.)

(He finally catches a sea urchin.)

(Breathing out)

(Proud)

It's not finished yet.

You have to go down again.

(He catches another one.)

(He successfully caught the sea urchins.)

(They are back on the land after fishing.)

You should eat the sea urchins later.

- It has roe in it. / - This is what I caught.

Try it.

- I caught two. / - Try it.

I tried one.

Junho.

I tried one earlier and it was tasty.

- Was it? / - It was tasty.

(She treats him like her son.)

- It has a unique flavor. / - Right?

It's what I caught.

Try this.

Ma'am, I took off my boots

and found this.

No way.

There is an ocean in Junho's boot.

(While others were struggling, he secretly caught one.)

(It seems like everyone is talented.)

- Thank you. / - We'll get going, ma'am.

- Thank you for your hard work. / - Thank you.

Stay healthy.

- Stay healthy. / - Goodbye, ma'am.

- Two Days! / - And One Night!

(They successfully won the female divers' hearts.)

It's written here. It's off to Mara Island.

Is this the dock for boats going to Mara Island?

The final destination of today's trip is

Mara Island.

Have any of you been to Mara Island

for shooting "Two Days and One Night"?

We've been to Mara Island.

- We tried but failed. / - Mara Island?

- We tried, but we failed. / - Because of the weather.

We couldn't ride the boat because of the bad weather.

(Three years ago, they almost made to Mara Island.)

(They had to look)

(at the picture of beautiful Mara Island instead.)

Whenever we tried, we couldn't go due to the weather.

But as you can see, the weather is good today.

Let's go ride the boat right now.

Let's go.

- We're finally going there. / - The weather is nice.

Isn't Mara Island the southernmost part of Korea?

- It is. / - It's the southernmost land.

It's known for having good jjambbong.

- Right. / - Jjambbong sounds good.

- Hey. / - Thank you.

- Give me the ticket. / - I'm ready.

(It takes 30 minutes from Jeju Island to Mara Island.)

Did anyone order jjajangmyeon here?

Hey.

(They head to the top deck of the ferry.)

What is this?

What?

(Excuse me, but who are you?)

You're sitting on our seats.

- Did you buy tickets? / - What's going on?

(They don't answer.)

(They don't say anything.)

What's going on?

I know them.

Who are they?

(Taehyun seems to know something.)

- Who are they? / - Do you know them?

- Do you know them? / - Yes.

- Who are they? / - Who are they?

Who could they be?

Thank you

for your hard work in trying to win popularity

in Jeju Island today.

The six people here

are fans of "Two Days and One Night".

(I love Two Days and One Night.)

At the same time,

they're fans of yours.

(They're fans of Two Days and One Night)

(and the members.)

- Nice to meet you. / - Thank you.

(Today in Jeju,)

(Jongmin was misunderstood as Kim Minjong.)

(Do you like Taehyun?)

(Sucking)

Excuse me?

(Someone was defeated by a drink.)

(Since you all worked so hard today,)

(we invited your fans.)

I know my fan.

- What? / - How do you know?

Of course I know my fan.

So we're supposed to find our fans, right?

It's a piece of cake. I got it.

(Except for Taehyun, they have no idea.)

I'll be so hurt if someone I choose is not my fan.

- I'll be so hurt. / - This is so easy.

Do you know who your fan is?

- I know. / - I have no idea.

Is only one of them my fan?

What should I do?

Now, you're going to find your fan.

Do you remember the TV show, "Happy Together Friends"?

- My friend. / - My friend.

(If the person is a fan, he or she will greet back.)

(If the person is not, he or she will say,)

("It's my first time seeing you.")

I don't know any of them.

He says he's sure who his fan is.

I'm so sure.

It'll be funny

if the person says, "It's my first time seeing you."

"I'm someone else's fan now."

- "I'm Jongmin's fan now." / - Jongmin?

- You never know. / - I'm not sure about that.

(It's possible the fan has changed his or her mind.)

The fan could have changed his or her mind.

"Nice to meet you. I'm not your fan anymore."

If you find your fan at one go,

I will give you ten dollars.

With the ten dollars, you can buy some food

- in Mara Island. / - I want to win.

I think I've seen two of them.

The guy wearing a checked shirt

is not looking here at all.

(He looks blank.)

I think he is Junho's fan.

He looks like Junho.

I can feel it.

I'm so sure of it.

I think the guy in the middle is Jongmin's fan.

I know exactly who he is.

You do?

Let's start.

- Who goes first? / - Defconn.

Defconn.

Actually, I do have a lot of male fans.

People who look like him

take care of me a lot. I'm telling you.

I'm worried.

If he's not your fan, it'll be so awkward.

I'm so sure he's my fan.

(I know the answer. Just tell me I'm right.)

(He checks out the women just in case.)

No way.

(He tries sitting next to them.)

(Go away.)

(He winces.)

She doesn't want me to sit there. She's not my fan.

She can't be my fan. She can't be.

She was looking at you like, "What's wrong with you?"

(Another woman looks at Defconn, looking innocent.)

Your eyes are red. Is it because you wanted to see me?

You couldn't sleep last night, right?

(Her smile tells me that she's my fan.)

Say, "Hi, my fan".

Hi, my fan.

(He shyly extends his hand.)

It's my first time seeing you.

(It's my first time seeing you.)

(I fell for it.)

Defconn is out.

I'm sorry.

(She feels sorry.)

What's wrong with you? You're a celebrity.

I'm sorry.

Defconn, go back to your seat.

Okay.

CNN Student News - June 25, 2017 | North Korea Releases an American Who`d Been Arrested - Duration: 10:00.

Welcome to CNN STUDENT NEWS. As the new week begins, many people around the world are paying

tribute to Nelson Mandela. He helped end apartheid, South Africa`s practice of racial segregation.

He became the country`s first democratically elected president. Mandela died last Thursday

at 95. Our show from last Friday covered his life and legacy.

Yesterday was the National Day of Prayer in South Africa. An official memorial service

is scheduled for tomorrow. Several world leaders are set to attend. Mandela`s memory is being

honored around the globe.

Our nation has lost its greatest son. We saw in him what we seek in ourselves.

He was just this huge larger than life figure.

He was a magnanimous person. He was a compassionate person.

For the world, you know, there`s been no (inaudible) leader like him in my lifetime.

It was remarkable, I mean we can sense the humor, a twinkle in his eye, and yet at the

same time there was this serious side to him.

What an extraordinary, an inspiring man Mr. Mandela was.

He was the person that, I think more than any other person in the late 20th century

represents its - the triumphs of the human spirit over adversity.

(singing)

He didn`t cover my (inaudible), and he was so gracious, a gracious man. Very seldom you

can find that combination of virtues and values and principles all in one person. But it was

all then, one man that we all came to know and laugh, Madiba, Nelson Mandela.

Many around the world were greatly influenced by his selfless struggle. He touched our lives

in deeply personal ways.

I`m one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela`s life. My

very first political action was a protest against apartheid. The day he was released

from prison gave me a sense of what human beings can do when they are guided by their

hopes and not by their fears.

We would ask everybody at the Atlanta (inaudible) to stand, please, for a minute silence in

respect of the life of Nelson Mandela.

For now, let us pause and give thanks.

For our first "Roll Call" of the week we thought we`d add a little color to "Roll Call" festivities.

We are going to start with the purple Riders from Martins Ferry`s High School in Martins

Ferry, Ohio. Over in Fishers, Indiana, we`ve got the Golden Hawks from Riverside Junior

High, and we`ll round out our roll with the Red Devils, they are from Central High School

in Phoenix City, Alabama.

Economic indicators and winter weather. Economy`s up first. The new U.S. unemployment rate seven

percent. Lowest it`s been in five years. In November, the economy added 203,000 jobs.

Some experts see this as good signs for the economy. But there are still 11 million unemployed

Americans and more than a third of them have been out of work for at least six months.

Like economic data, weather reports are full of highs and lows. In Dallas, last Wednesday,

for example, the high was 80 degrees. By Thursday night, a low in the 20s. A winter storm blasted

into the region bringing freezing rain and sleet. The winter weather moved east over

the weekend. Experts predicted temperatures would be back on the rise today.

When someone from one country visits another, it`s unusual for that person to be held prisoner.

That`s what happened to Merrill Newman, though, when he took a trip to North Korea. The country

isolates itself from most of the rest of the world, so it`s very difficult to understand

its decisions. One thing we do know is that the situation involving Merrill Newman is

over.

Good morning. I`m delighted to be home.

Merrill Newman, the 85-year old Korean War veteran, spent six long weeks in captivity.

It`s not clear why the North Korean government suddenly let him go. But the state`s news

agency said he was deported for humanitarian reasons and because he was repented.

I can (inaudible) understand that in U.S. and Western countries there is misleading

information and propaganda about PPRK.

It came a week after the former Army intelligence officer and later Silicon Valley executive

gave this statement for his alleged war crimes while in Korea some 60 years ago.

And killed three innocent operators to delay the munition supply.

Some described it as highly scripted political theater.

This is the pattern of the North Koreans. They make some of this prisoners do confessions

they basically feel they have enormous leverage over you and, you know, you are in North Korean

prison. You say that.

Following his release, Newman first went to China, been flew home to San Francisco. His

son and wife by his side at the airport.

It`s been a great - great homecoming. And I`m tired, but - it was my family now and

thank you all for the support we got.

Here, in Palo Alto, at Newman`s retirement complex, you can see the yellow ribbons to

welcome him home. Though the U.S. has no former relations with North Korea, a White House

officials says that Newman`s release was the direct result of contact between Washington

and the North Korean capital.

Thousands of Westerners travel to North Korea each year at their own peril. Newman went

there in October as part of a ten day tour. The day before leaving, he had reportedly

spoken to some Korean authorities about his military service. He was eventually pulled

off his airplane just minutes before it was to depart.

It`s time for "The Shoutout." How many countries have teams in the FIFA World Cup Tournament?

If you think you know it then shout it out! Is it eight, 16, 32 or 64? You`ve got three

seconds, go!

Every four years, there are 32 nations in the World Cup soccer tournament. That`s your

answer and that`s your "Shoutout."

Now, we know which countries will be playing each other in the opening round of the next

World Cup. Last Friday, the draw was announced. Eight groups, four countries per group. Starting

mid-June, they`ll face off in stadiums like this one all over Brazil. The people will

be watching from all over the world. That`s why the teams aren`t the only ones trying

to get in.

As teams from countries the world over, we`re fighting for one of the caveated 32 spots,

big global brands who are battling it out to be associated with the FIFA World Cup.

Estimated by some at a cost of $100 million each to be an official sponsor.

So, when you are talking to companies, which are looking to have a global exposure, World

Cup is the platform where you have global exposure.

When it comes to current sponsors for FIFA, it`s Visa, not MasterCard. Adidas, not Nike.

McDonald`s, not Burger King. Coca Cola, not Pepsi.

The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle.

For Coke, the World Cup is key.

In 2010, the campaign was the biggest ever marketing plan for brand Coke ever. And the

ambition is to go higher.

Coke estimates some 2 billion people were actively quote, "engaged" with the 2010 World

Cup in South Africa. Not just watching a match or two. Their goal, says Coke, attracting

teenagers.

Brand experts say, global corporations are often associated with other big sporting events

as well.

If you sponsor things like the World Cup, the Olympics, the Champions League, you got

a big ad in the Super Bowl, effectively, you are saying to people, we are a big great brand.

You should aspire to be associated with us. You should want our products.

And Jeff, you aren`t there. Your competitor will be.

This is the - the number one passion for Latin America, for Europe. It`s more than just a

sport, it`s about culture. You have to be there. You have to go and own that space.

That space also goes totally against the new trend of niche marketing and micro-targeting.

Though for the brands, it`s not about selling a specific product. It`s about your brand

basking in a glow of the Super Bowl, or the Olympics, or the FIFA World Cup. Jim Boulden,

CNN, London.

You probably heard your parents say don`t chew with your mouth open. I don`t think anyone

is going to tell that to this shark. This video comes courtesy of a camera that was

attached to the bottom of a boat. The sailors strung out bait and got this view of a shark

chewing down. Animals just thought it was having lunch, little did it know it was about

to become a YouTube sensation. It`s a classic bait and switch. After the sharks hunger head

abated, it might have felt guilty, but that`s a different tale. We`ve reached today`s finish

line. Enjoy the rest of your Monday. We`ll see you again tomorrow. Bye now.

Look, we don't even know what happened.

That's right, and until we do, we will not be speculating.

Right, I knew this player once,

and he invested with this financial

guy who had about 18 other pro-athletes on his portfolio.

Well, turns out this guy was running a Ponzi scheme, right?

And everybody he repped--

Oh, yeah, dogs.

Bad investment.

And everybody he repped wound up going broke.

They left the game with nothing.

That is sad.

Yeah, I'm telling you, people think just because these guys

play ball, that they make millions,

and everything is all good.

I know.

I mean, you get a kid from the ghetto, who has no money

and never had it, right?

And then you give him millions, and then tell him, go ahead.

Now, be normal.

It's just like all those people that hit the lottery,

and wind up going broke.

Or wind up dead.

If there's nobody to show them what real money is,

they're not going to know.

I know I didn't.

No, you did OK, Marcus.

No I didn't. I wound up broke, too.

Didn't you see, Why Did I Get Married?

I used to cut hair in Angie's old salon.

Yeah, you were doing the weaves and the press 'n curls.

No.

I was a barber.

No, no, you were doing perms and stuff.

No, I wasn't.

But eventually I started commentating,

and I pulled myself out.

In Why Did I Get Married, 2.

That was a good movie.

That could've been me out there.

Wait, is there going to be a three?

Will you stop?

Listen, you know, I really feel sorry for him.

Hey, Marcus?

Hey, hey, hey, come on.

Let's get a look at you. - I love it.

Not too bad. Not too bad.

Thank you for the clothes, man.

Oh, man, sure, sure.

Can Sharks Really Grow an Unlimited Number of Teeth - Duration: 5:44.

While sharks aren't exactly the ruthless predators most Hollywood features make them

out to be (see: Do Sharks Really Not Like How Humans Taste?), they do possess a number

of frighteningly efficient mechanisms to assist with aquatic hunting, including ultra-streamlined

bodies, high intelligence, the ability to detect electrical fields and minute changes

in water pressure, great hearing, incredibly sharp vision, amazing sense of smell (Lemon

sharks can even detect tuna oil at a concentration of just one part per 25 million), and the

topic of today- many rows of razor sharp teeth, including the ability to rapidly replace them.

But are sharks actually able to grow an unlimited number of teeth throughout their lives?

Yep.

In fact, while the number varies wildly based on things like type of shark and lifespan,

it's not out of the question for a single shark to grow as many as 30,000-50,000 teeth

in its lifetime!

This might have you wondering what the process is on how exactly sharks replace missing teeth?

shark teethIn a nutshell, all sharks have multiple series and rows of teeth.

The number varies between type of shark, but most have between 5 and 15 series of teeth

(counted from front to back) in their mouths which themselves contain between 15 and 25

rows of teeth (counted along the jawline).

(As an example of how this can vary, the bull shark possess an unbelievable 50 rows and

7 series of teeth, giving it somewhere in the vicinity of 350 frightening teeth at any

given time.)

These teeth are arranged in such a way that the frontmost series will always house the

largest teeth with the series behind it holding slightly smaller teeth and behind that holding

smaller ones still, and so on until we get back to the rear series which are the most

recently formed.

These front teeth are referred to as the shark's "working teeth" and are the ones primarily

used for biting, tearing flesh and all of the other things a shark is thinking about

doing when it's swimming around below your legs as you dangle them in the ocean…

This isn't to say that the second, third or even the teeth located towards the back

of a shark's mouth aren't used when a shark is devouring something like your lower

half, it's just that the front series of teeth are typically subjected to the most

stress when this occurs.

(Note: In truth, only about a dozen people per year are killed by sharks vs. approximately

20-30 million sharks per year killed by humans according to the Florida Museum of Natural

History's Department of Ichthyology.

Who's the apex predator now sharky?)

Given shark teeth are not deeply rooted like human teeth and given the animal's incredible

biting power, shark lose teeth pretty frequently when eating, usually front ones.

Not only that, but they also naturally shed teeth throughout their lives, with the front

teeth being fully replaced approximately every few weeks.

(This rate varies by type of shark, age, and even the temperature of the water- younger

sharks typically replace teeth faster and, at least in some types of sharks, colder temperatures

help them hang on to their teeth longer.)

This means that the teeth in a shark's mouth are nearly always in pristine condition and

quite sharp, as they typically never get the chance to be dulled or worn over time before

being shed or broken off.

Whenever a shark loses a tooth, the tooth directly behind it will begin to be pushed

forward into the area left by the old tooth, all the while growing to the size of the tooth

it is replacing.

At the same time, the tooth behind that will do the same thing and so will every other

tooth until the shark once again has a full set of teeth- more or less a "conveyor belt"

of death.

And if you're wondering whether or not losing teeth via them breaking off when they bite

something hurts sharks, this isn't clear.

Shark teeth do have a certain amount of flex (in great whites approximately 15 degrees

of flex) which they can sense, using this fact to help "feel" things, not unlike

how a human might touch something to feel its texture.

But as for pain in over-flexing to the point of loss of a tooth, observations of sharks

in the wild and captivity seem to indicate that, if there is any pain involved, it is

only minor discomfort at most.

Given how critical it is for sharks to have a good set of chompers and how easily teeth

are broken off, it will likely not surprise you that this replacement process happens

quite quickly.

As for an exact time-frame, this varies and can be influenced by a number of factors including

the size, species and age of the shark, how recently the tooth replacing their missing

tooth was itself replaced and the shark's overall health.

But for a ballpark figure, this process can take anywhere from between a single day to

a few weeks.

However, even in the event that replacing the tooth does take weeks, the smaller teeth

are still useful, meaning the loss of even several teeth in the first series is highly

unlikely to negatively impact the shark in question.

So to sum up, as far as experts are aware, there is no upper limit on the amount of teeth

a given shark can produce in a lifetime; as long as it stays healthy, a shark will continue

to grow new teeth until the day it dies.

As a side-effect of all this, the ocean floor is covered in many trillions of shark teeth,

which is one of the reasons we know so much about shark evolution.

You see, as with most teeth, because shark teeth are primarily made of a hard, calcified

tissue known as dentin (for reference elephant tusks are primarily made of dentin as well)

surrounded by an even harder layer of enamel, their teeth don't typically decompose.

This, combined with how (relatively) quickly their teeth are fossilised by the sediments

on the ocean floor, means we have a massive number of ancient shark teeth to study today.

(And if you're curious, see How Do Things Become Petrified?)

(As another interesting aside, a shark's placoid scales are also made up largely of

dentine and don't grow in size once in place.

So to accommodate this, as their bodies grow, they produce new teeth-like scales to more

or less fill in the gaps.)

How To Cook Burgers In An Electric Pressure Cooker - Duration: 4:48.

Oh man that's good cheesy tastes all the way through mm-hmm! Hi folks it's Mike

with getmytips.com with another step-by-step easy recipe for you. Now

keep in mind that our recipes are designed for folks who don't have a lot

of experience in the kitchen, or for people who don't want to spend a lot of

time in the kitchen. And this one's probably going to blow your mind!

Pressure cooker hamburgers. And I know what you're thinking, that's just nuts!

Who would want to cook a hamburger in a pressure cooker. Well watch this video

and find out because when you come home from work, and you don't feel like making

a mess in the kitchen, or you just want a hamburger, you just want to stick it in

the pressure cooker, hit the button, and go check your email. This

is the recipe for you. Well let's get started. We'll put a complete list of

ingredients and cooking times on your screen before this video ends. This way

you can pause it while you are preparing the burgers, or when you are shopping for

the ingredients. We are using 1 cup of 80/20 hamburger, which is about a half

pound burger. We're going to use cheddar cheese and dried onions along with a

pinch of salt, and a pinch of pepper. This is a great way to get all of that

delicious cheddar cheese flavor inside the burger. Now we can mix everything up

and use a hamburger press to make the burger. Using a hamburger press helps

with uniformity and it makes for a great presentation. If you don't have one

and you would like to purchase one, check the video description for an affiliate

link. This amount of hamburger along with this press, makes the hamburgers about

3/4 of an inch thick. And you will notice all of that delicious cheddar cheese

incorporated throughout the burger.

We are going to wrap this burger in aluminum foil to keep it nice and juicy.

Now when you use aluminum foil in an electric pressure cooker, you need to

extend the cooking time just a little bit. And here's a tip for you when you

come home from the grocery store you can prepare 5 or 6 of these hamburgers

in advance. And this way when you come home from work or whenever you want one,

your won't have to take the time to prepare it.

Also if you want to use prepackaged frozen burgers, you can do that. You just

won't be able to incorporate the cheddar cheese into the mix. We'll just prepare

the burger just as we did before, except we need to increase the cooking

time so it can thaw out before it starts cooking.

We're going to use 1 cup of water. Now make sure that you

use some type of rack to elevate the burger out of the water. If you're using

an instant pot, you will use the manual setting. And when the time is up, do a

manual pressure release. And let's have a look at our delicious cheddar

cheeseburger. The easiest way to open the foil, is to use a pair of scissors and

cut it at an angle and then across. This keeps all of the drippings inside

the foil making it easy to throw away. Oh

man look at that delicious cheddar cheese inside that burger! Now

let's put the burger on a toasted bun along with some lettuce tomato and mayonnaise.

Mmm oh man that's good cheesy taste all the way through. Mmm (yummy sound) Well there you go

folks, a delicious cheddar cheese burger and almost no time. And the best thing is

there's no pan to clean and no splatter to clean off the cooktop. Now if you

learned something here today I invite you to subscribe so that when we post

another video you'll be notified. Thanks for watching ♥

Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks Have Publicly Put an End to Their Beef - Duration: 1:20.

Hey guys for Complex News, I'm Natasha Martinez.

The nearly six year long feud between Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks may finally be over.

Iggy extended an olive branch to Banks in a lengthy message posted to Snapchat were

she made it clear she doesn't hate the artist, she doesn't know her to hate her.

"As a 27 year old adult woman just know: I wish you well from one human to another and

joke collaboration or not as adults we should move past trivial beef with strangers."

In an interview with XXL Azealia Banks seemed to leave the door open for reconciliation

too saying that it could happen once Iggy acknowledged what hip hop has been trying

to tell her.

"I hope that there will be a chance for us to have an open discussion about this, as

I feel America and the world could really benefit from some candid discourse between

two public figures about the world's biggest sickness: racism."

On Friday, Banks posted a note on Instagram where she listed some requests which included

an Iggy Collab, so does this mean their feud is over?

Well If the list of demands like Banks getting signed by Jay-Z happen and getting free beats

from Kanye pan out, then yes.

Although Banks added she's going to need about 121 strong red roosters to make it happen.

That's your news for now, for more of today's trending stories subscribe to Complex on YouTube.
