Eight years ago, a research group at MIT unveiled a new sensor technology, called GelSight,

that uses physical contact with an object to provide a remarkably detailed 3-D map of

its surface.

Now, by mounting GelSight sensors on the grippers of robotic arms, two MIT teams have given

robots greater sensitivity and dexterity.

One Team uses the data from the GelSight sensor to enable a robot to judge the hardness of

surfaces it touches — a crucial ability if household robots are to handle everyday

objects.

The other team uses GelSight sensors to enable a robot to manipulate smaller objects than

was previously possible.

The GelSight sensor is a low-tech solution to a difficult problem.

It consists of a block of transparent rubber . One face of the rubber is coated with metallic

paint.

When the paint-coated face is pressed against an object, it conforms to the object's shape.

The metallic paint makes the object's surface reflective, so its geometry becomes much easier

for computer vision algorithms to infer.

The system has colored lights at different angles, and then it has this reflective material,

and by looking at the colors, the computer … can figure out the 3-D shape of what that

thing is.

HOW TO CREATE AN ELEGANT BOOK COVER - Duration: 9:46.

Hello everyone and welcome to the new Ebm computer tutorial on

photoshop art section is the we will do is create a cover

elegant book and look like those leather-bound books and

gold letters that are so cool well because what we do is

enter photoshop and we go from of this I left them in the image

Description of video that looks like what I have told you is the bound book

leather good start then first we will do will be desaturated

we will go for image adjustments and we will find the option desaturate or

and now and then I go go to levels well levels image adjustments

and that what I do is what next I'm just going to change this value

255 I'll put 129 there and we would give ok well now

I'm going to do is make a filter then Gaussian blur filter

Gaussian blur and blur we will put 1.5 pixels

there you would have and give ok well So now we have this

that we will keep to use more Later then I go for file

Save As and right here on the cover because I'm going to put on the map

displacement map or give you Save and would then

Now this I can then Close and open up the sample I

jpg had begun simply that I have ahiy with it could start making

the effects will be good then what skewer make a new layer here

there we have new layer and we will do is have the black and white colors

in the second color we will put the Next she dialed

and we'll put the next color 876 81E and we

ok well and now what we will do is I'm going by filter will interpret and

I will say that clouds do so It makes us a few clouds with two colors

we had well and now we put us imaging contrast and brightness settings

let's put glitter 40 and in contrast we'll put 30 well

and we give ok well we go now filters we will go gallery

filters and there we will go to a filter which it is in distorting and then

glass and let's put the following values and will crystal distortion

we put 18 in smoothing we put 4 frosted texture and scale 200

as they can always play with values they want if they like

Other values and other effects we ok

well then the next step would be Take the text tool

Horizontal and I'll punch more or least where I want to write there and now

I will choose a font that is the times New Roman that I have there times

New Roman size 144 mode will be strong and I'll catch a white

there is good then there will then write whatever I want in this

If it'll put something with case will put photoshop and

the second line is going to put art well then I'll move the text

with the move tool because it

I'm going to put it on the move I want to point to what I'm going to

do here is to change something for what

left us a little effect slightly best

then I put 144 pixels in this letter, I will change the first letters

and let's put on

Example 160 there is and here too we will put 160

It is also going to put 160 well There we would have already and that part and

and we want to climb a bit to up because we use the tool

move to our taste good and Now let's write again we will

make another layer and in this case what we will do is this

we will use the same r Times New Roman but let's take a size

34 Well I'll click over there and I will change from 160 to 34 and what

let's put here we will put in Tiny write by

because below we will write to Ebm and would do the same for what we

to do is adjust it to where we We wanted either more or less as already

would there we can climb more less like each

what I'm going to do I'm going to join the two layers

Text selection button oy give turn right to object

intelligent well and now what will do is I'll go I'll filter

go to distort and let's see here what would I write shift values

2 and 2 I give ok and grab the map done before and

then how to see what it does is that the edges is done as a roughening

I had not before we continue to Then what we do is

changing the blending mode put it in superimpose and see how we go

out those letters and now what I to do is the

I'll select the two layers and also I'll select the

text then here now control + click and

how we select the text, well let's turn to Smart Object

because as we have done before button right turn to Smart Object

and then we will make a mask have here button

Create Clipping Mask and there we see how we go running, well then what

we will do is a perspective as we do good the first thing

we will do is with scrutiny - for make it smaller so that it can

make it easy and go for editing transform and perspective

there and let's take a corner pulling more or less as we will go

adapting and the next step would be put it all together in a layer and convert

Smart Object then I say turn the object

intelligent well and the last option would be and

will interpret and filter effects lighting effects

lighting us now when we load we will come here in settings

Preset and let's put on default

well and then here and let's make one thing we're going

to give less control to play with it easier we will come here

where it says focus and we will be putting different values well in intensity

we will we put 75 in beam can we 77 put the next one would be

coloring we will put least 54 and Let's put him glow least eight

then the last two metal 100 and 44 atmosphere there we have it we can

put our taste and play with it then we would open all this part

until leaving as we it look like a

site look less of a site we could go then moving up

find the point where we want, well in my case as well I

like I'll give ok and there you have We will not put full screen

so you can see and we would have the effect It has done very well as far video

Today liked me can give one like can subscribe to my channel

you know where you put subscribe below so they will be informed of the video or

videos we got every day I can follow on social networks and the

computer web pages and Garret Ebm Ebm

any comments or suggestions or request put me under I

I answer all very well thank you very much and even video tomorrow

(Death cap mushroom) The world's most dangerous mushroom and what it did to an 18-month-old girl - Duration: 2:42.

(Death cap mushroom california) 14 Poisoned By Wild Death Cap Mushrooms In California

Death cap mushrooms foraged in Northern California have severely poisoned 14 people in the last

few months, three so seriously that they needed liver transplants.

One victim is a toddler who will have "permanent neurological impairment," according to a

medical report.

The high number of poisonings has alarmed officials.

The mushrooms, often mistaken for a benign variety, have flourished this year in heavy

rains.

Mushroom experts first noticed a particularly large bloom of death caps in November.

News of the string of poisonings that began in December came to light this week in a "Morbidity

and Mortality" report by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Besides the toddler, ages of the victims ranged from 19 to 93 years old, according to the

CDC statistics.

The poisonings occurred in five counties, and hospital stays ranged from six to 36 days.

The worst case involved an entire family in Salinas.

A woman who was given the mushrooms by a forager cooked them for herself, her husband, her

18-month-old daughter, her sister and a friend.

They all became ill, and the toddler and the woman's sister needed liver transplants.

"It was like a bus accident happening right in front of the hospital," Dr. Todd Mitchell

told The Santa Cruz Sentinel as he described the life-and-death demands of treating mushroom

poisoning.

Mitchell, one of the authors of the CDC report, is conducting a clinical trial to determine

the effectiveness of a treatment protocol.

The Amanita phalloides is one of the deadliest mushrooms on Earth and is responsible for

90 percent of mushroom poisonings around the world.

Once the mushroom's amatoxin is ingested, it begins to kill cells, eventually shutting

down organs.

The mushrooms are most abundant during rainy fall and winter months, but they can survive

throughout the year in coastal fog in California.

The CDC report urges extreme caution when hunting for wild mushrooms, adding that "inexperienced

foragers should be strongly discouraged from eating any wild mushrooms."

The mushrooms are a serious threat in remote areas around the globe where medical help

is too far for quick treatment.

"These mushrooms continue to wipe out entire families each and every year in Nepal, South

Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Vietnam and India as well as China," Mitchell told the Sentinel.

"Amatoxin mushroom poisoning is an unrecognized worldwide public health crisis.

Literally, hundreds die every single year."

Blocking People in Real Life: Tom Scott at An Evening of Unnecessary Detail - Duration: 8:48.

I've always wanted to share the stage with a creepy skull mannequin, by the way.

That's just fantastic.

When I was younger,

although not quite so young that I should really not have known better,

I sent one of the most harsh messages I've ever sent in my life.

I'm going to share it with you now.

I'm not proud of it, but here it is:

"I've blocked you everywhere else,

"and now I'm going to block you here too.

"My only regret is that I can't block you in real life."

Past me was a dick.

I couldn't block them in real life, right?

Because they were still in the same social circles,

They were still going to get invited to the same events,

still going to be part of the same things,

and it's going to be awkward,

particularly after I send a message like that.

And some folks would say that I should just get used to it,

that I should just be at the peace with the fact that some people are just jerks,

and some personalities clash, but I thought,

what if instead: we use technology to fix that.

So my proposal for you tonight is: blocking in real life.

Which has been done in science fiction, right?

This is from Black Mirror.

But the trouble with science fiction blocking

is that they have to make it work on camera,

and that means inevitably it's a messy fuzz of pixels or something like that,

and that's not useful, that's not helpful.

Because a messy block of pixels can still see you,

and you can still see it,

and it can still punch you in the face.

So that's not great.

But we do have an algorithm for this that will already work,

and Photoshop has it, it's called content-aware fill,

and it's the…

"Woo!" from a Photoshop user there!

Although given this audience,

possibly the man who created the feature, we don't know.

I was actually originally in that photograph.

There I am, that's the original.

But nowadays it's trivial to just find an object,

paint it out, and there you go.

And if you didn't have those two identical bushes

right there in the middle,

you might not even spot that I was never there in the first place.

Now, Facebook already has facial recognition for people, right?

So in theory, you get a photo… here's one of me and some friends.

You get a photo,

you could highlight the person,

and you could paint them…

Yes, well it doesn't…

It does go a little bit Cronenberg sometimes.

But in the next few decades we're going to figure out how to make

much, much deeper connections into the brain.

We're already starting to see some things like this.

We've been using deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's patients since 2006,

that's when that paper was from,

and spoiler, or as they insist on calling it here,

"abstract"…

Abstract: it works.

And we've already got people controlling robot arms with brain implants,

and exoskeletons with EEG caps.

Okay, so no-one is actually working on a neural lace yet…

No, of course Elon Musk is working on a neural lace,

because Elon Musk is working on everything that Iain M Banks ever wrote about.

So let's say that it works.

Let's say that in the next few decades,

over the rest of the century,

we get something that starts to make deeper and deeper connections into the brain.

And to start off with it's going to help

an increasingly-aging population to deal with senescence,

but eventually it will trickle out to the rest of us.

And I'm willing to bet that humanity won't regress into virtual worlds,

because virtual worlds are good for gimmicky games, but they're not real.

There's no real human interaction there.

And sure, the uncanny valley has pretty much been solved, right?

That is Johnny Depp playing young Johnny Depp in the latest Pirates movie.

But you can't have that for human interaction.

I'm willing to bet there's the same uncanny valley effect for talking to someone.

You can't simulate a human without simulating something that's very close to human,

and that would be unethical, even if it was possible.

But you could hijack the vision centre.

You could use all those same little tips and tricks

that the brain has been using for, well, millions of years of evolution,

to just quietly make you not notice things.

If you walked here like this,

and quietly routed yourself around an obstacle without even seeing it,

you're already using those tricks.

And yes, I have footnotes.

You could just tell your vision centre to quietly remove things, or add things in.

You could teleport to a remote office by saying to your implant,

or whatever it is, you want to go there.

It'd paint your vision with that,

and it would paint you into the vision of the people there.

But if you can do that,

then you can start to remove things as well.

Those implants could use the sort of hacks that we've talked about

to quietly remove objects, and people, and anything.

To start off with, this would just be used on annoyances.

It'd be used on the baby that's crying on the plane,

it'd be used on the jerk who keeps leering at you at the bus stop every day.

But eventually it'd start to roll out and roll out,

you'd be able to block someone.

You won't appear in their perceptions,

and they won't appear in yours.

And sure, there are going to be people out there without implants,

but increasingly, as it becomes more and more normalised,

like smartphones are today,

they're going to find themselves in a kind of a twilight zone

where a lot of people are ignoring them.

The same way that people get better customer service by tweeting someone

than they do by calling on a landline.

And okay, there are people who are going to try and get around this, right?

There are going to be moments of human ingenuity that…

It was really expensive to get that photo made, by the way,

just the skywriting costs alone.

But in general, people would be okay with this,

because no-one here could tell me the last person who unfriended them on Facebook,

not with certainty.

Because you can't remember everyone you're friends with,

and you don't check every day, and it doesn't notify you,

and it's not particularly offensive when it happens.

They're just not appearing anymore,

you've just forgotten about them.

So once we're happy with that,

the technology can start getting better, and better, and better.

It can start blocking objects and concepts and ideas,

and it can start to just automatically work out the things

that your brain flinches away from and automatically start to block them.

And people will start sharing block lists, right?

It won't be monolithic,

it won't be brought in from on high,

but you will just tend to block the same things your friends block,

because if you don't, you keep noticing the elephant in the room,

and you keep being the awkward one at the dinner party

who keeps talking about things that people don't understand.

Or alternatively your friend is,

and will you please shut up about that, Dave,

we don't know what you mean!

Literally, we don't know what you mean.

People, shops, homes, offices, entire cities just quietly erased.

Imagine crowds of people just sliding past each other on the street,

just by unspoken, unknown, mutual consensus, just removing each other.

I mean, China Miéville talked about this in his book 'The City & the City', right?

But those two cities were divided by tradition, and etiquette,

and occasional violent retribution,

and tourists just had to fit in – there'd be none of that.

Instead of going to war,

feuding nations could just block each other.

And their citizens' implants would be legally mandated

to just quietly edit the other country out.

Maybe it gets to the point where you don't know the other world exists

until you're an adult.

Maybe children are just kept from it,

because you don't want to talk to those people.

Until then it's just a rumour,

it's just bumps in the night and explanations for ghost stories.

And then you get to being 18, or 21, or whatever,

and you have a look in the other world to see what it's like,

and it's terrible.

Never ever want to go back there.

They'll say there are people who've blocked everyone,

and we'll never know for sure.

But I could look out at a full house like this

and not know if my eyes are gliding over the people from another world.

Maybe there's someone else on stage and I'm just walking and talking around them,

because that's what my implant lets me do.

Which means there is one little question left over:

what happens when you edit out the idea of implants from people who have implants?

Because there are going to be people who hate the idea.

Maybe they were fitted with them from birth.

Maybe they were given them for work and have to have them, but they hate the idea

that the thing that is heading through their eyes into their brain isn't reality.

And how would that be any different from me being on this stage right now

telling a story and you immediately dismissing this as science fiction?

Ignore that itch behind your ear, it's probably nothing.

My name's Tom Scott, have a good night.

MATT PARKER: All right!

There's your camera...

Tom Scott, ladies and gentlemen!

My goodness.

Restoring an Antique Meat Cleaver - Duration: 3:15.

sup guys so yesterday Jaime came home from the antique store and found this

little beauty. This is an old antique meat cleaver. Seems to be in pretty decent

shape and I like old tools like this that are built well, so the think I'm

going to take her down to the shop and try to restore it back into usable condition

so that she can stop using my hatchet to butcher chickens with. Let's take

her downstairs and see if we can get it cleaned up.

Now you can see here whoever

had it before did quite the number on the edge but it's not terrible and the

metal is actually in good shape. I think we can clean this up. Try a little bit

of steel wool.

9 Signs You Have An Unhealthy Gut - Duration: 4:37.

If we are serious about maintaining a healthy body and mind, we would be wise to pay attention

to the health of our gut.

Our gastrointestinal tract is an architectural wonder.

Good bacteria flourishes within the twists and turns of the colon, and is tasked with

many functions.

Some are responsible for giving a boost to our immune system, convert food into energy,

eliminate waste and toxins.

So our gut is under a lot of pressure to perform well.

But when bad bacteria storms in, a gut imbalance will occur.

Suddenly hormones are off balance, which can leave us vulnerable to a wide range of health

issues.

Most of us don't know there's a fight between good and evil bacteria until a state

of war has been declared in our rumbling intestinal tract.

In fact, a gut imbalance has been linked to hormonal imbalances, autoimmune diseases and

more.

In today's video we'll examine 9 warning signs that can alert us of a battle brewing.

1.

Lack of Energy Sleepless nights are one sign.

If digestion is having trouble, your metabolism will be slowed down.

Therefore, the chemical breakdown of food for energy production isn't going as planned.

Bad gut bacteria can rob your body from the nutrients it needs.

And some toxins that should be eliminated are scampering into other areas of your body

and they are up to no good.

2.

Digestive Issues Some signals are obvious: bloating, gas, diarrhea

are a few warning signs.

Your good gut bacteria are struggling mightily to break down food.

Some gas is normal, but excessive gas that causes bloating and burping are signaling

there's trouble below.

Acid reflux, IBS, and colitis are other problems that are a direct result of an invasion of

bad bacteria.

3.

Complexion Problems Once those bad bacteria are wreaking havoc,

gut inflammations can trigger inflammations elsewhere – especially on the face.

If you notice a flair up of acne, rosacea, eczema or psoriasis, it may be time to neutralize

your gut.

4.

Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies To squeeze every precious nutrient and mineral

from food, the gut needs to be functioning properly.

Your cells depend upon them for growth, energy and repair.

5.

Autoimmune Diseases A malfunctioning gut has been significantly

linked to autoimmune diseases which include lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's

disease.

6.

Onset of Diabetes An unhealthy gut can also trigger the onset

of Type 2 diabetes.

Patients with this disease have high levels of bad bacteria in their gut.

7.

Mood Issues Anytime bad bacteria are in control, you can

be sure toxins will be produced.

And they can disrupt the normal production of the happy hormone – serotonin – and

other neurotransmitters that can elevate your mood.

Instead, you are bombarded with mood swings, stress, anxiety and depression.

8.

Difficulty Sleeping Deep within your gut are warehouses that stash

and regulate serotonin.

Without this hormone to induce and regulate sleep, you will experience a restless night

of tossing and turning.

9.

Stubborn Weight Those who are obese or carrying around too

much weight have a different ratio of intestinal bacteria from those who maintain a healthy

weight.

A body that's not properly digesting and absorbing fat will find some place to store

it.

Tips to build and maintain a healthy gut:

Eat less sugar, which contributes to the growth of bad gut bacteria;

Chew food slowly, thoroughly; Stay hydrated;

Undergo a gentle detoxification monthly to eliminate toxins;

Consume more probiotic foods (or supplements) to restore the balance of gut bacteria;

President Vladimir Putin On Russian Election Interference (Full Exclusive) | Megyn Kelly | NBC News - Duration: 11:24.

ST. PETERSBURG, AND THE MAIN SUBJECT, RUSSIA'S EFFORTS TO

INTERFERE IN OUR ELECTION. >> PRESIDENT PUTIN, YOU HAVE

REPEATEDLY AND PASSIONATELY DENIED THAT RUSSIA WAS BEHIND

THE INTERFERENCE WITH OUR AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

BUT AS YOU KNOW, THE CONSENSUS VIEW IN THE UNITED STATES IS

THAT YOU DID. THAT'S WHAT THE 17 INTELLIGENCE

AGENCIES CONCLUDED, REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS ON THE

CONGRESSIONAL OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE WHO HAVE SEEN THE

CLASSIFIED REPORT HAVE SAID. ARE THEY ALL LYING?

>> Translator: THEY HAVE BEEN MISLED.

AND THEY AREN'T ANALYZING THE INFORMATION IN ITS ENTIRETY.

I HAVEN'T SEEN EVEN ONCE ANY DIRECT PROOF OF RUSSIAN

INTERFERENCE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN THE UNITED STATES.

>> WE MET PRESIDENT PUTIN IN ST. PETERSBURG, HIS HOMETOWN, AND

RUSSIA'S FORMER CAPITAL. HE GREW UP IN A MODEST

NEIGHBORHOOD HERE, BECAME A KGB SPYMASTER, AND HAS BEEN RUSSIA'S

STRONG MAN FOR 17 YEARS NOW. >> WELCOME TO THE ST. PETERSBURG

INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC FORUM. >> IT WAS MY JOB TO MODERATE THE

FORUM, WITH MORE THAN 4,000 FEEM IN THE AUDIENCE, INCLUDING WORLD

LEADERS, SOME SHARING THE STAGE. THE NORMALLY WONKISH GATHERING

BECAME HEATED WHEN I ASKED PRESIDENT PUTIN WITH RUSSIA'S

ATTEMPTS TO HACK THE U.S. ELECTION.

>> THE EXPERTS SAY IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN FAKED, IT'S THE

FORENSICS, THE MALWARE, THE ENCRYPTION KEYS, THE SPECIFIC

PIECES OF CODE, THAT ALL OF THEM POINT TO RUSSIA AND NONE OF THEM

POINTS TO ANYONE OTHER THAN RUSSIA.

>> Translator: WHAT FINGERPRINTS, OR HOOF PRINTS OR

HORN PRINTS? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

IP ADDRESSES CAN BE INVENTED, YOU KNOW.

THERE ARE A LOT OF SPECIALISTS WHO CAN MAKE IT SO IT COMES FROM

YOUR HOME IP ADDRESS, AS IF YOUR 3-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER CARRIED OUT

THE ATTACK. >> THERE ARE REPORTS TODAY IN

THE AMERICAN PRESS THAT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION TOOK ACTIVE

STEPS TO EASE SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA, ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER

TRUMP TOOK OFFICE. WAS IT POSSIBILITY EVER

DISCUSSED BETWEEN THE TRUMP TEAM AND YOUR REPRESENTATIVES PRIOR

TO PRESIDENT TRUMP BEING INAUGURATED?

>> Translator: YOU KNOW, I SAW WHAT WAS HAPPENING.

TO BE HONEST, IT WAS A BIG SURPRISE FOR ME TOO.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING IS JUST NUTS.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE PEOPLE SPREADING THIS DISINFORMATION

CAME FROM. IT'S SOME SORT OF CATASTROPHE.

>> AFTER THOSE TESTY EXCHANGES, WE WEREN'T SURE WHAT WAS GOING

TO HAPPEN LATER WHEN WE SAT DOWN FOR OUR ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW.

AND WENT RIGHT BACK TO THE ISSUE OF HACKING.

>> YOU HAD SAID FOR MONTHS THAT RUSSIA HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH

THE INTERFERENCE OF THE AMERICAN ELECTION AND THIS WEEK, YOU

FLOATED THE IDEA OF PATRIOTIC HACKERS DOING IT.

WHY THE CHANGE AND WHY NOW? >> Translator: I HADN'T SAID

ANYTHING. IT'S JUST THAT FRENCH

JOURNALISTS ASKED ME ABOUT THOSE HACKERS.

I TELL THEM THE SAME THING I TELL YOU.

HACKERS CAN BE ANYWHERE, IN RUSSIA, IN ASIA, AMERICA, LATIN

AMERICA. THEY CAN BE HACKERS IN THE

UNITED STATES WHO VERY SKILLFULLY AND PROFESSIONALLY,

AS WE SAY, SHIFTED THE BLAME ONTO RUSSIA.

COULD YOU ACCEPT THAT? IN THE MIDST OF A POLITICAL

BATTLE, BY SOME CALCULATIONS, IT WAS CONVENIENT FOR THEM TO

RELEASE THIS INFORMATION. SO THEY RELEASED IT, CALLING OUT

RUSSIA. CAN YOU IMAGINE SOMETHING LIKE

THAT? I CAN.

>> THEN THE FORMER KGB AGENT FLOATED A CONSPIRACY THEORY

ABOUT U.S. DIRTY TRICKS. >> THERE'S A THEORY THAT

KENNEDY'S ASSASSINATION WAS ARRANGED BY THE UNITED STATES

INTELLIGENCE SERVICES. IF THIS THEORY IS CORRECT, THEN

WHAT COULD BE RULED OUT? THIS DAY AND AGE, USING ALL THE

TECHNICAL MEANS OF THE INTELLIGENCE SERVICES TO

ORGANIZE ATTACKS AND THEN POINTING THE FINGER AT RUSSIA.

>> FOR THE RECORD, U.S. INTELLIGENCE HAS CONCLUDED THEIR

PUTIN HIMSELF ORDERED THE DISRUPTION OF THE ELECTION.

REGARDLESS, PRESIDENT PUTIN SAID THE U.S. SHOULD BE THE LAST

COUNTRY TO ACCUSE RUSSIA OF MEDDLING.

>>. >> Translator: I WILL TELL YOU

SOMETHING YOU ALREADY KNOW, I DON'T WANT TO HURT ANYONE'S

FEELINGS, BUT THE U.S. ACTIVELY INTERFERES WITH CAMPAIGNS IN

OTHER COUNTRIES. AMERICAN OFFICIALS ARE

INTERFERING IN INTERNAL ELECTORAL PROCESSES.

>> THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JUSTIFICATION.

>> Translator: IT'S A STATEMENT OF FACT.

EVERY ACTION HAS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION.

WE DON'T EVEN BE HAVE TO DO THAT.

PRESIDENTS COME AND GO, GO AND EVEN THE PARTIES IN FOUR, BUT

THE MAIN POLITICAL DIRECTION DOESN'T CHANGE.

THAT'S WHY, IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS, WE DON'T KNOW WHO IS

THE HEAD OF THE UNITED STATES. WE KNOW MORE OR LESS WHAT IS

GOING TO HAPPEN. SO IT WOULDN'T MAKE SENSE FOR US

TO INTERFERE. >> BUT THE FBI, CONGRESS, AND A

SPECIAL COUNSEL ARE INVESTIGATING RUSSIA'S

INTERFERENCE, AND WHETHER THE TRUMP TEAM WAS IN ON IT.

>> A SPECIALS COUNSEL HAS BEEN APPOINTED TO INVESTIGATE

CONTACTS BETWEEN YOUR GOVERNMENT AND THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN.

YOU'VE SAID YOUR AMBASSADOR, KISLYAK, WAS JUST DOING HIS JOB.

SO WHAT EXACTLY WAS DISCUSSED IN THESE MEETINGS?

>> THERE WERE NO MEETINGS. I -- YOU UNDERSTAND?

THERE WERE NO MEETINGS. WHEN I SAW THIS, MY JAW DROPPED.

>> NO MEETINGS BETWEEN AMBASSADOR KISLYAK AND ANYBODY

FROM THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN? >> Translator: I HAVE NO IDEA.

I'M BEING HONEST. DO YOU THINK THAT FROM ALL OVER

THE WORLD AND THE UNITED STATES, THE AMBASSADOR REPORTS TO ME

EVERY DAY WHO HE EATS WITH OR MEETS WITH?

>> YOU'RE HIS BOSS. >> HIS BOSS IS THE MINISTER OF

FOREIGN AFFAIRS. DO YOU THINK I HAVE TIME TO TALK

TO OUR AMBASSADORS EVERY DAY ALL OVER THE WORLD?

COMPLETE NONSENSE. >> AMONG THOSE UNDER SCRUTINY,

THE PRESIDENT'S SON-IN-LAW, JARED KUSHNER.

AT A MEETING WITH RUSSIA'S AMBASSADOR LAST DECEMBER, HE

REPORTEDLY TRIED TO ESTABLISH A SECRET COMMUNICATIONS CHANNEL

WITH THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT. >> THIS IS A PROPOSAL BY MR.

KUSHNER? >> Translator: I DON'T KNOW

ABOUT THIS PROPOSAL. NO PROPOSAL LIKE THAT CAME TO

ME. >> MR. PRESIDENT, DID JARED TRY

TO SET UP A BACK CHANNEL TO THE RUSSIANS?

>> HAVE YOU GONE BACK TO SPEAK ABOUT WHAT WAS IN THE

DISCUSSIONS? >> Translator: NO.

>> WITH ANYBODY FROM THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN?

>>. >> Translator: NEVER.

>> WEREN'T YOU INTERESTED? >> Translator: IF IT HAD BEEN

IMPORTANT, THE MINISTER WOULD HAVE REPORTED IT TO ME.

THERE WASN'T ANYTHING TO TALK ABOUT.

THERE WASN'T A DISCUSSION ABOUT SANCTIONS OR ANYTHING ELSE.

FOR ME, THIS IS JUST AMAZING. YOU CREATE A SENSATION OUT OF

NOTHING AND OUT OF THIS SENSATION, YOU TURN IT INTO A

WEAPON OF WAR AGAINST THE CURRENT PRESIDENT.

WELL, THIS IS, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE JUST, YOU PEOPLE ARE SO CREATIVE

OVER THERE. GOOD JOB.

YOUR LIVES MUST BE BORING. >> MICHAEL FLYNN HASN'T HAD A

BORING LIFE. IN 2015 HE ATTENDED AN EVENT

WITH PRESIDENT PUTIN IN MOSCOW. HE WAS LATER HIRED AND THEN

FIRED AS PRESIDENT TRUMP'S NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER.

AND IS NOW BEING INVESTIGATED FOR HIS RUSSIAN CONNECTIONS.

>> DID YOU KNOW GENERAL MICHAEL FLYNN?

HE CAME OVER HERE FOR A DINNER, A PHOTO OF WHICH HAS BEEN WIDELY

CIRCULATED IN THE AMERICAN MEDIA.

WHAT WAS THE NATURE OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM?

>> Translator: YOU AND I, YOU AND I PERSONALLY HAVE A MUCH

CLOSER RELATIONSHIP THAN I HAD WITH MR. FLYNN.

WE MET YESTERDAY EVENING, WORKED TOGETHER ALL DAY TODAY AND NOW

WE'RE MEETING AGAIN. WHEN I CAME TO THE EVENT AND SAT

DOWN AT THE TABLE, NEXT TO ME THERE WAS A GENTLEMAN ON ONE

SIDE. I MADE MY SPEECH, THEN WE TALKED

ABOUT SOME OTHER STUFF AND I GOT UP AND LEFT.

AFTERWARDS I WAS TOLD, YOU KNOW THAT WAS AN AMERICAN GENTLEMAN

WHO WAS INVOLVED IN SOME THINGS, HE USED TO BE IN THE

INTELLIGENCE SERVICES. THAT'S IT.

I DIDN'T EVEN REALLY TALK TO HIM.

THAT'S THE EXTENT OF MY ACQUAINTANCE WITH MR. FLYNN.

>> BUT WHAT ABOUT HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH PRESIDENT

TRUMP? >> I WOULD GET ALONG WITH

RUSSIA, AND I'LL GET ALONG WITH PUTIN, AND HE'S NOT GOING TO

MAKE US LOOK BAD ANYMORE. BUT WE'RE GOING TO GET ALONG.

>> THERE HAVE BEEN QUESTIONS IN AMERICA ABOUT DONALD TRUMP'S

FINANCES, HE HASN'T RELEASED HIS TAX RETURNS.

AND A SECRET RUSSIAN DOSSIER THAT HE SAYS IS FAKE.

THERE'S QUESTIONS ABOUT THE COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE

KREMLIN AND THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN, ALL OF WHICH HAS MEARNDS ASKING,

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING DAMAGING ON OUR PRESIDENT?

>> WELL, THIS IS JUST ANOTHER LOAD OF NONSENSE.

WHERE WOULD WE GET THIS INFORMATION FROM?

DID WE HAVE A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM?

WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY RELATIONSHIP AT ALL.

THERE WAS A TIME WHENLY USED TO COME TO MOSCOW, BUT I NEVER HAD

THE WITH HIM. WE HAVE A LOT OF AMERICANS WHO

VISIT US. RIGHT NOW, WE HAVE

REPRESENTATIVES FROM 100 AMERICAN COMPANIES THAT HAVE

COME TO RUSSIA. DO YOU THINK WE'RE GATHERING

COMPROMISING INFORMATION ON ALL OF THEM NOW OR SOMETHING?

HAVE YOU ALL LOST YOUR SENSES OVER THERE?

>> TOWARD THE END OF OUR CONVERSATION, WE MOVED AWAY FROM

THE ELECTION CONTROVERSY, TO PRESIDENT PUTIN'S REPUTATION FOR

REPRESSION. >> MANY AMERICANS HEAR THE NAME

VLADIMIR PUTIN, AND THEY THINK HE RUNS A COUNTRY FULL OF

CORRUPTION, A COUNTRY IN WHICH JOURNALISTS WHO ARE TOO CRITICAL

WIND OF MURDERED, A COUNTRY IN WHICH DISSIDENTS COULD WIND UP

IN JAIL OR WORSE. TO MEME WHO BELIEVE THAT, WHAT

IS YOUR MESSAGE? >> I WANT TO SAY THAT RUSSIA IS

DEVELOPING ALONG A DEMOCRATIC PATH, THAT IS CERTAIN.

AND NO ONE SHOULD HAVE ANY DOUBT ABOUT THAT.

WHY DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK US THESE KINDS OF

QUESTIONS AND DO IT ALL OF THE TIME, TO MORALIZE AND GIVE US

LESSONS ON HOW TO LIVE? WE'RE READY TO LISTEN TO

COMMENTS WHEN IT'S DONE CONSTRUCTIVELY, CREATING A

COMMON ENVIRONMENT. BUT WE WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT

ACCEPT WHEN THESE SORTS OF THINGS ARE USED AS AN INSTRUMENT

OF POLITICAL CONFLIC

Transitioning a Journal to Open Access - Duration: 6:00.

Hi there.

I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined.

Today I am going to discuss transitioning an existing journal to open access.

The changes open access has had on scholarly publishing, academic libraries, research,

and other groups is nothing short of amazing.

Many of the new journal launches during this time period have been open access publications,

more significantly, many well-known and well-respected society or subscription journals have flipped

their model to open access.

This trend will only increase as library and subscription budgets come under continued

assault and readers continue to demand no barriers to academic material and research,

especially when funded by a government or a non-profit organization.

As a reminder, open access is when content such as journal articles are readily available

with no barriers to access such as needing a subscription.

There are also limited or no copyright restrictions to the articles.

There are several models of open access such as Gold OA (when the article author might

be charged an APC or Author Processing Charge) or Green OA (when the author self-archives

their article at a publicly available repository run by a group such as a university).

There are several steps that an association or publisher needs to take entertains the

idea of converting a journal to open access.

Let's assume the journal is either a member benefit (that is paid for by an association

and sent to members only) or a subscription based journal.

Let's also assume the articles and other contents of the journal are available at a

website that requires a member or a subscription ID.

Finally, let's assume you are considering making the journal open access to any reader

with no barrier to reading an article, including no embargo.

FYI an embargo is when some or all contents are not available immediately upon publication

but are made available after a period of time, maybe 3 or 6 months.

Moving to OA with an APC, simply means moving the funding model from one place (members

or subscribers) to another (authors who pay a fee to publish).

So essentially there are still barriers, but now the barriers are the availability of funds

by the article author or funding body to support the article's publication.

Number one: start the process with truly understanding all the costs it takes to publish the journal

and more importantly, a single article.

Include all costs: the publishing fees an association might pay a publisher, editor

honoraria, manuscript tracking fees, page make up, editing, printing, or whatever is

applicable.

Overlook no cost.

Only after diving into this completely are you ready to proceed.

Next is to list all the revenue that comes from the journal including subscriptions,

advertising, supplements, reprints, permissions, payments from an aggregator, and many others.

Much of this revenue may be affected or disappear if a publication flips to OA.

Next understand the manuscript flow: the number of submitted articles, accepted articles,

rejected articles, backlog if any, and average length of an average article.

After this, review the other publications in this area.

Are they subscription based, member benefits, or OA?

If they are OA, what is there APC?

Next comes the most important step.

Dialoguing with or surveying stakeholders of the journals, including article authors,

members, subscribers, advertisers, editors, internal staff, and others.

Talk to them about the journal and what their reaction would be to move from its current

funding model to open access.

Understanding whether authors would pay an open access fee or APC, and if so, how much.

This is crucial insights for when you get to the speculative P&L (or profit and loss

statement) of flipping to OA.

After these conversations with stakeholders, most importantly members/subscribers and article

authors, you are set to start to create various prospective P&Ls that look at what the change

would look like financially.

I am not addressing whether a journal is also moving from paper and online to online only

as well.

While this may be the case, this complicates the topic at hand.

Create different scenarios: worst case, best case, and several cases in between.

Think about how the income loss (such as subscription revenue) might be offset by other revenue

such as APC or reduced expenses.

For a society journal, the most important point to focus on how is how this move may

affect membership.

Will members be less likely to renew their membership if one of the top member benefits

is now free to everyone?

Or will the journal's content being ready available expose your valued publication to

potential members who might join the group?

Will potential authors pay an APC or have funding available to them?

Will the manuscript flow, and more importantly the quality, be affected?

These decisions can be some of the most critical ones you can make when coming up with these

speculative P&Ls.

Reaching out to consultant may help with these difficult projections.

The major consideration is the long-term trend of the current model.

How has sub and other revenue been trending?

How has membership been trending?

Is the current model sustainable?

If you choose to move forward, timing is critical.

Consider how your institutional subscribers will be affected by the change and talk to

them about the ideal time for the switch.

Make sure they are in the loop and continue to have access to or receive the publication

once it becomes OA.

Considering flipping a journal to OA is a big step.

It can mean greater availability of the content and research to a much wider audience and

much higher usage metrics, but the economics has to work.

Talk to librarians and groups like SPARC (or the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources

Coalition) about these decisions.

Well that's it.

Winning an Election: The 5 Pillars of a Compelling Campaign Message - Duration: 2:42.

Today we begin a series of videos about how to construct a compelling campaign message.

And I'll start with a quick overview of a political campaign on one page…what I

call a political roadmap.

Broken into three parts.

Your Message.

The Means you will use to spread and advertise your message,

and what must be done to prepare for a campaign before it begins.

In this video I'll give you an overview of the five components of a campaign

message, and in the weeks to come I'll go into greater detail about each…how to

construct a memorable slogan, tell your story, express your values, position yourself on

issues that matter to voters, and what, if anything, to say about

your opponent.

First a fundamental truth about politics.

Voters don't care about you.

They care about what you will do for them.

If your message doesn't tell them, your message

is worthless tripe.

If you have no message, nothing else you do in a campaign

will matter.

I can prove that with two words.

Hillary Clinton.

Your message is the most important component of your campaign.

The slogan you use is the summary, the rationale, the

umbrella of your message, the one thing you want voters to know even if they remember

nothing else.

Your story is your way of letting voters know what makes you tick, your notions

of right and wrong, good and evil.

It is through your story that you let voters know they can trust you to make important

decisions on their behalf.

Expressing your values is your way of letting voters know yours are in sync with theirs.

That you care about the same things they do.

Pictures of your family, helping veterans, feeding the hungry, or reading

to children lets voters know that you do.

Voters will expect you to have positions on important issues of our time.

Which is why your platform should tell them your ideas, policy initiatives, what you support

or don't that would advance tax and economic policy, social issues like crime and

education, and in federal races, foreign policy.

Finally, in a competitive election, you will need to compare and contrast yourself with

your opponent, and do it in a way that makes you the obvious choice.

These are the five components of a compelling message.

No campaign is complete without them.

Next week I'll tell you about a time-honored formula I developed that will help you construct

a compelling campaign slogan.

If you'd like to know that right now, watch my free, 3-part video series on how

to win an election.

You'll find the link highlighted on the screen, or right below

the screen, depending on the device you are using to watch this video.

I'm Jay Townsend.
