Math, Music and Sanskrit - My Presentation at UPenn (SAS Sanskrit Conference) - Duration: 20:10.

Now, Siddhartha will be presenting.

10 years ago, he attended a residential camp and he has been learning Samskritam ever since.

He is entering 12th grade currently

He learns Samskritam as well as Carnatic Music

He will be presenting on some mathematical aspects (including the Fibonacci Series) of Pingala's Chanda Shastra as well as those in Carnatic Music.

My name is Siddhartha

Today I will be talking about math in music and in poetics

Mathematics is present in many Indian Shastras

Whether it is music, poetics or the designing and construction of a yagashala, there is mathematics used.

There was a scholar named Mahaviracharya.

In his book "Ganitasārasaṇgraha", he writes:

This means that math exists everywhere

However, in today's presentation we will only examine mathematics in the context of poetics and Carnatic music

Whenever we hear about Indian math, we often ask the questions:

"What was the development of math in India like?" or "What is the history of mathematics like in India?"

M.D. Srinivas, a researcher in this field, says that such questions are inappropriate.

Instead of asking about "the growth of math in India", we must ask about "Indian mathematics."

Why "Indian Mathematics"? Our Indian ancestors' approach to math was a very unique one.

They didn't necessarily view math as a completely separate subject.

They instead incorporated mathematics into many fields including music and chandas

These are some notable works that deal with poetics

There is Pingala's 'Chanda Shastram"

Virahanka's "Vrttajatisamucchaya"

Then there is Bharatha's Natyashastra

Finally, Brahmagupta's "Brahmasphutasiddhanta"

These are some important and famous works - beyond these, there are many, many more on this subject.

Now, I will give you an introduction to chandas or "meter."

Even though those assembled here are most likely aware of this, I would like to give a brief background.

a Matra is the time taken to enunciate a short vowel.

A "Laghu" is a syllable whose duration is 1 Matra.

"Guru" is a syllable whose duration is 2 Matras.

kā, kī, ū, etc. are gurus

"Aksharam" means syllable

There are two types of aksharams - laghu and guru

A "Gana" is a group of 3 aksharams

There are two types of meters - "matravrttam" and "varnavrttam"

Matravrttam looks at the number of matras in a sequence

In Varnavrttam we look at the number of aksharas in a sequences

First we will look at math in the context of Matravrtta meters

For example, here is a question one may encounter:

"What are the possible ways you can fill up "8" beats with a combination of short and long syllables?"

Here, the duration of one "beat" is one matra.

"What are the possible ways you can fill up "8" beats with a combination of short and long syllables?"

The answer to this question is...

Imagine we are dealing with 1 beat (though the question asks for 8 beats)

If we have 1 beat, we can fill it with only 1 laghu (duration of 1 matra)

If we have two beats, the combinations are either "laghu+laghu" or 1 guru.

If there are 3 beats, then we could have "laghu+laghu+laghu", "guru+laghu" or "laghu+guru"

So, how many combinations exist for 8 beats?

Pingala answers this question in his Chanda Sastra

Pingala observed a pattern here

The pattern here is that first, write down "1" and "2"

Then, take the sum of these two previous numbers to get the next term in the sequence.

This is what is known as the "Fibonacci Series" in modern number theory.

Where in this series does the answer to our question lie?

We are dealing with 8 beats, right?

To get the answer, we look at the 8th term in the sequence which is 34. Thus there are 34 plausible combinations for 8 beats.

In Ancient Indian Mathematics, this sequence is called the Hemachandra sequence because it was he he first came up with a formula for it.

Do you think it is a good debut song?

Nice question... Let me answer first than maybe our viewers can answer for us too.

I thought they could come up with a better song since their voice and dance is are all on point. Even their rapper sounded so good.

I wish they had a different genre... But this just my personal opinion

But with their voices and dances they could have done much better with a different song.

There were so many dance breaks... Instead of them they could have highlighted their voices

What suprised me was that even though they danced hardcore their voices did not crack. Not even once!

What do you think, Sude?

People who knew A.C.E before debut expected more of them them since we know that their voices and dances are really good.

I don't think anyone was expecting this type of song. That is why I said that it is a bit risky song

But maybe they were scared beacuse its their debut song and decided to put more dance in it because they are not that comfortable in the beging

Souldn't their debut song be good though? to be impactful.

But they already had a fanbase who was awere of their talent

5 Mexican singers you SHOULD know | MEXICAN MUSIC 🇲🇽 - Duration: 3:56.

Since we've been talking about "la Latinidad" lately, I've decided to make this list

with 5 Mexican singers, musicians or bands that I think everyone should

listen to because they're the coolest!

The first singer in this list is Julieta Venegas.

Many of you may already be familiar with her songs and I've

already mentioned her in another video.

Julieta was born in the United States,

but she grew up in Tijuana and she's very well-known not only in Mexico, but

also in Latin America in general and also Spain.

Her music genre is pop-rock

and she has collaborated with many, many artists throughout the years and

throughout the world. I see her as a Marisa Monte (Brazilian singer) of Mexico

and, in fact, she has

collaborated with Marisa Monte before.

The duo Rodrigo y Gabriela is not a

singing duo, but an acoustic guitar duo and they play

instrumental music which they describe as acoustic rock and their songs

are deeply influenced by flamenco.

Their songs are simply electrifying and you

have to listen to it to understand what I'm talking about.

Carla Morrison's songs are profound and sweet at the same time and I love her

work, so much so that I've posted a cover of one of her songs a few months ago

here on my channel.

Her music genre is indie-pop and the two things I like the

most about her music are the lyrics and her voice.

Café Tacvba is an alternative rock band that's been active

for many, many years. They released their first album back in 1992 and they're

still one of the most important bands of the genre called rock en español.

And last, but definitely not least, is Natalia Lafourcade.

Natalia's genre is

indie-pop and her songs are influenced by folk music and bossa nova and I think

her songs are wonderful and captivating and one of my favorite ones is her

version of "Amor de mis amores" by Mexican composer Agustín Lara.
