(Episode 1676)
Hello. I'm Shin Hyunjoon of Entertainment Weekly.
Hello, I'm Jung Jiwon.
It's almost the end of June.
When I looked at the calendar today,
I realized half of 2017 has gone by.
- Time flies, doesn't it? / - Yes, it does indeed.
That's why we've prepared a special summary report
about the first half of the year.
Be ready to find out many categories of the report.
At the beginning of the year, Jiwon said
she'd announce her marriage
by the time we reach the first half of the year.
The first half of the year has gone by so fast.
I'm doing my best.
Please wait a bit longer.
It's been two years since we've been working together.
It's odd no one is asking me to set them up with you.
Not even one guy?
There is one,
but he's my friend's son. He's in middle school.
I'll try to take it up a notch.
All right. You still have the rest of 2017 left.
- I can do it. / - You can do it.
Let's check out tonight's news segments.
Kim Sungeun and Yoon Jiyeon will start us off.
The first category of this year's first half
summary report is on dramas.
I wonder which dramas were huge favorites
during the first half of the year.
We've analyzed these dramas that garnered a lot
of viewers' attention by keywords.
Aren't you curious to find out? Please stay tuned then.
Before that, it's This Week's Hot Click.
This week, we had the news of Ha Risu's divorce.
Also, Choi Jonghoon of FTIsland and Son Yeonjae
have made their relationship official.
This Week's Hot Click begins now.
Let me deliver the sad news first.
(Ha Risu and Mickey Jung are divorced.)
Last Monday, the news of the divorce was announced.
In May of 2007,
their marriage as the first transgender couple
gained a lot of attention.
There's a lot of news speculating we've broken up.
A report claimed I ran off with three million dollars.
During their first year of marriage, false news
regarding Mickey's abuse and extortion were brought up.
They claimed the scandals were false, starred on TV
together, and showed how strong their relationship was.
Last Monday, an agency
revealed that they are divorced.
The agency claims Mickey's failed business
is the cause. However, the claims were not true.
The claim his business caused the divorce is not true.
We don't know how and from where this rumor originated.
It's to my knowledge that they made
the decision in order to start afresh separately
as they try to improve themselves.
Ha Risu and Mickey responded to the false news through
their social media account
and posted their own statements.
The hateful comments regarding the divorce
once again caused pain for both of them.
We are reviewing the comments and thinking of
filing lawsuits for particularly malicious ones.
It'd be best if the public can support them
in order for them to have a fresh start.
We hope to see you two again in better circumstances.
Making a false accusation is a serious crime.
I will fully cooperate.
(The accuser of Lee Jinuk's case is found innocent.)
Ms. Oh in her 30s was charged with falsely accusing
Jinuk of sexual assault and had her first trial.
She was found innocent in the first trial.
Ms. Oh sued Jinuk in July, 2016 claiming he visited
her house and sexually assaulted her.
The case was later closed without him being charged.
(His case was closed without any charges filed.)
Afterwards, he sued Ms. Oh for falsely accusing him.
Ms. Oh's first trial was held last Wednesday.
Considering she allowed him to visit her late at night,
the Justice Department regarded the act was consensual.
(However, she didn't actively participate in the act.)
The Justice Department
speculated it could have been a favor.
As they pointed out she didn't actively participate,
the department released their ruling.
(What is the conclusion of this incident?)
I requested a thorough analysis of the case's ruling.
(If she was found not guilty,)
(does that mean Jinuk admitted to the charge?)
No, that's not true.
Only the two of them know the truth.
It merely implies that the Justice Department
isn't certain that it was a lie.
Just because she wasn't found guilty of false
accusation, it doesn't imply he did commit the crime.
Both persons were acquitted of their charges
which means both of them are innocent.
This might seem a bit peculiar.
The Justice Department can't punish anyone.
This can't be helped since they will only charge
a person when they are certain a crime was committed.
In the prosecutor's point of view,
if the accused is found innocent or the sentence is
halved, the prosecution can file an appeal.
I believe the prosecution will read the ruling,
declare the reasons of their appeal,
and file the appeal.
The public is curious whether they will appeal or not.
I'm devastated that my friends are in pain.
But I don't want to be used. What do you want from me?
Certain comments threatened an idol group.
People are worried as their lives were threatened.
Last Wednesday night, police was dispatched to
Apink's agency office located in Nonhyeon-dong.
This was because the police received a call
that made death threats against Apink.
I have detailed information on this from their agency.
An unidentified person called Gangnam Police Station
and threatened to kill the members of Apink.
So the police made a visit to the agency.
Everyone including our office as well as our private
security service is doing their best to protect Apink.
A day after the incident, a man who claimed to be
the caller released his motive for the death threat.
After the suspect watched a video clip in which Apink
went on a blind date with aspiring actors,
he called the agency to make a complaint,
but their response wasn't to his satisfaction,
so he threatened to kill them.
For two weeks, he called many times until it was hard
for us to work. We tried to deal with his complaints.
We later felt that his complaints had gone too far,
so we told him to stop calling the agency.
He made the threat but didn't plan to kill them.
So what is the penalty for sending a death threat?
Even if the suspect didn't plan to
actually commit the crime, as long as
he is aware his threat can scare the victims,
the person can be charged for making threats.
He could be jailed for less than three years
or fined 5,000 dollars.
The sentence depends on his motive, means, situation
after the crime, and if he is a first-time offender.
Apink's agency plans to take
serious measures to handle the situation.
Apink's return will proceed as promised.
Apink is trying their best to be at their very best
as they overcome this incident.
Inappropriate support can hurt celebrities.
We hope nothing like this happens again.
- Since the Olympics is over... / - Really?
- Are you open to the idea? / - I want to date.
(I want to date.)
- Me too. / - Yeonjae, the beloved national gymnast,
has started dating.
I think...
I'm looking for someone whom I can rely on.
- I prefer older guys to guys my age. / - Older men?
A man has stolen the heart of 24-year-old Yeonjae.
He is the leader of FTIsland, Jonghoon.
He's four years older than her, which is perfect.
(Handsome)
I am aware that they are interested in seeing
each other. They are starting to get to know each other
rather carefully.
Last Wednesday, photos of them in Japan were released.
(They made their relationship official.)
They were introduced by a mutual friend last February.
They were friends, but it turned into a relationship.
They've been together for three months
and are enjoying each other's company.
Yeonjae's birthday was on May 27.
Jonghoon threw a surprise party with their friends.
The public saw photos of him
giving a birthday cake and flowers to her that day.
Jonghoon and Yeonjae just started their relationship.
We support your love and hope it continues.
(We wish your relationship the best.)
Congratulations.
(Entertainment Weekly)
This segment doesn't come by every day.
It only comes once a year.
It's the summary report of the first half of 2017.
40 dramas aired in the first half of 2017.
Some of the dramas caught our attention.
I analyzed them by keywords.
The segment begins now.
The first keyword is "The White Paper of Jobs".
Dramas centered on offices were loved as they showed
the joys and sorrows of employees
and earned the sympathy of the audience.
This employee garnered the most attention of all.
Is that you?
- Who is it? / - It's me.
"It's me."
It's the drama "Chief Kim".
To discuss the reason for its success, one must include
the memorable lines starting the first episode.
(Let's take a look at these brutally honest lines.)
What do you think is an unchanging Korean trend?
It's
pocketing someone else's money.
(His eyes open wide.)
The drama criticized Korea for its corrupt society.
I just put his belongings in the basement parking lot.
You are a jerk whose head is full of udon noodles!
Udon?
He took a shot at privileged people
who act as they please.
This is another selling point.
The drama depicted the office life
and brought unexpected laughter
as the drama showed realistic scenes.
(The sound of the toilet being flushed next door)
Gosh, it's hot!
Stop pooping!
I guess he's done now.
Thank you, and what a great place to put the soap.
With its many selling points,
the ratings managed to keep going up.
The ratings of the first episode was 7.7 percent.
The ratings of the last episode was 17.2 percent.
The drama ended at double its initial ratings.
There's another realistic drama centered on offices.
("Radiant Office")
- What? / - Do you think
I studied for 16 years to please all of you managers?
The characters said things
real employees always want to.
Don't you think it's the lack of effort on your side?
"Effort"? Did you say "effort"?
I came here because I have to make a living.
Why would I dedicate my life to this company?
Don't make me say a stupid thing like that.
Goodness, she was blunt during her interview.
"Radiant Office" which centered around Ko Asung,
was acclaimed for realistically depicting the lives of
young adults who have to give up many things, and for
portraying the struggle to survive in the workplace.
How should I explain what an intern is?
Is it someone we accept first and send away afterwards?
(This line hit home for many viewers.)
"Super Family 2017" also took place in an office.
These blunt lines pointed out the painful reality.
("Super Family 2017")
You can pay back the mortgages over 20 years.
You can buy one in 30 years these days.
- No way. / - No way.
The lines were hard to bear, but they were refreshing.
The drama comforted and spoke for all employees.
It made viewers want to watch the show.
(Gosh!)
In the first half of the year,
we faced painful and sad incidents.
So, many viewers wanted to watch dramas that
depicted the daily lives of average citizens.
That's why the dramas were cheerful,
romantic, and funny.
I predict there will be more dramas like them.
The second keyword is "Realistic Family".
Dramas that centered around families were loved greatly
as viewers identified with the families.
"The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop" which ended at
the beginning of 2017, had 30 percent in the ratings.
The drama that aired after was loved too.
It's right here.
It's me, Byun Hyeyoung, the prettiest girl.
(The drama is "Father is Strange".)
The realistic stories of families in this drama
were relatable to the viewers.
Hey!
It reached the highest ratings at 31.7 percent.
It's ruling the industry as the king of weekend dramas.
Do you know how to make other people feel what we feel?
How do you do that?
We must
throw a fit in order for them to realize it's
- their work instead. / - I completely agree.
Goodness, the reason why it's successful
is because with refreshing blunt lines, viewers
feel as if their burdens have been unloaded.
Don't you agree?
(For her mother who was falsely accused,)
(she bluntly tells off a lady with a refreshing line.)
You insulted her with offensive language.
Apologize before I sue you for defamation!
She punished them for her wrongfully accused mom.
She's the definition of a woman who makes
viewers feel refreshed.
Are you happy now?
Viewers could also identify with the realistic
portrayal of living with four siblings.
Because of that bag, they physically fought.
It's the scene of a fierce battle among siblings.
- Let go of her! / - Hey.
This is how two angry sisters look in real life.
You are watching Lee Yuri's hair being pulled.
Mornings of a family with many daughters can be seen.
(The drama has viewers' absolute support.)
Okay! Here!
In another drama, "All Kinds of Daughters-in-Law",
twins also fight whenever they spot each other.
The drama painted their relationship in a cheerful way.
Get out of my face!
Don't they look like a real family?
They're not bad.
The third keyword is
"Fantasy Characters".
Many dramas that centered around
unrealistic characters were greatly loved by viewers.
This was a hit drama that was a nationwide sensation.
Because it's a fine day.
Because it isn't a fine day.
(From the TV series "Goblin")
Because the day is right enough.
Just every day was perfect.
Every day watching "Goblin" was a treat for us too.
My heart bounced from the ground to the sky.
She was my first love.
Viewers were captivated by the show's great lines.
- I love you. / - Me too. I love you too.
Their fated love made me fall in love as well.
My heart skipped a beat watching this scene again.
The show was perfect in every way,
and even the soundtracks topped the charts.
They're still ranked high which proves
just how much they made an impact.
Why can't we all have a Gong Yoo of our own?
There's another character that blew everyone away.
♪ Hang in there, super power ♪
Do Bongsoon was born a super strong woman,
and it became this actress's role of a lifetime
as it became a beloved show.
- Park Boyoung. Park Boyoung. / - Thank you.
An unrealistic character is someone
we would never see in real life.
That's why viewers respond well to realistic characters
meeting supernatural beings.
The final keyword of the list is "Actresses".
Some of the biggest names of the 90s came out of hiatus
and made their way back to the small screen.
13 years after "Dae Jang Geum",
Lee Youngae finally made her comeback.
(She came back after a long break.)
Ko Soyoung came back after ten years
to play a relentless housewife.
I'm bleeding!
Uhm Junghwa also made a comeback after eight years
and played a top celebrity.
The return of these actresses was much talked about.
That's not all.
Rising new talents also led the small screen this year.
Right now!
Kim Sohyun finally played the main female character
instead of the childhood version.
The average age of the current leading ladies is 26.
It has been constantly lowering for years now.
Child actresses have been transitioning
to more grown-up roles.
There are more roles teen actresses can take on
which is why they're transitioning
earlier than before.
Everyday issues and relatable problems
will be dealt with.
Shows about everyday life will be at the center.
Also, shows that will heal us with love for others
will be showcased alongside the former.
We look forward to TV series with unique plots and
solid story lines in the latter months of 2017.
(Entertainment Weekly will root for you all.)
We look forward to more amazing shows.
It's time to move on to our next news segments.
Kim Taejin and Kim Saengmin are up.
I have for you this week's Veteran.
I met with You Jaemyung,
the charismatic actor who always steals the show.
Hear how he went from playing small roles
to being a trending actor.
It's also time for Guerrilla Date. This week,
I met with the gentle and sweet Lee Jehoon.
Whatever his fans wanted, he did it.
So stay tuned to see how it all went.
But first, let's meet four of Korea's finest actors.
It's Hwang Jungmin, So Jisub,
Lee Junghyun, and Song Joongki.
Thanks to the long period of working together on set,
they had all formed great relationships.
Here's the interview.
(People of Joseon dragged to Battleship Island)
Having at least one survive was a victory for them.
In 1945, the Joseon people tried to escape
Battleship Island despite the slim chance of success.
Korea's finest actors have gathered to tell
this untold story within Korean history.
They're here to share the buried history
and the hidden truth.
Here are the cast of "The Battleship Island".
- Hello. / - Good to see you.
What did you say after "the buried history"?
- "The hidden truth". / - Thank you.
We'll make sure to use that line during our promotions.
I got it from your promotional material though.
- We weren't sure what to say. / - Really?
I think it's a movie that all Koreans should see.
Could you perhaps tell us a little bit about it?
Normally, one is designated for this role.
I see that it's Joongki, the youngest.
There's an island called Hashima Island that was
home to those forced into labor by the Japanese.
The movie depicts the unfair treatment of our people,
and it tells the story of them trying
- to escape the island. / - I see.
Many already know what they had to endure,
so I was worried we were making it too complicated.
But the main character of the movie
is just an ordinary man trying to escape the island.
Making it personal
made it easier for me to portray him.
Jisub, I hear you had many tough action scenes.
The director wanted me to be a man of strength.
He wanted my punches to have a drastic effect,
and I have to say that it wasn't easy.
You should know what he had to wear.
Him and the other actor had nothing but underwear on.
They couldn't wear any sort of protective gear.
I'm guessing you'll play the scene.
Yes, probably.
Here it is. It sure looks very difficult.
(The action scene at a public bath)
Joongki, you must be asked this a lot.
You're once again playing a military man.
Did you find it a burden
to play a similar role once again?
- I was fine with playing a soldier again. / - I see.
I went through the same process to play this role.
I was on board because of how great the story was.
Who I was playing wasn't much of a factor.
Junghyun, people have been talking about
your extreme diet.
- I was about 43kg at first. / - Gosh, you're honest.
But those forced to be sex slaves were
skinny from malnutrition.
After seeing a documentary, I thought
losing weight would depict the situation better,
- so I dropped to 36.5kg. / - Isn't that incredible?
Others in the movie dropped over 20 to 30kg,
so what I did was nothing compared to them.
Leading actor or not, you had to lose the weight.
You worked with actors representing each of their era.
Are there any moving stories you could share with us?
First of all,
- Jungmin... / - Don't.
He must be embarrassed.
- Jungmin / - Please don't.
Shooting this movie wasn't a stroll in the park.
After every shoot, someone would be injured.
I can't even begin to describe the pain we were in.
If it weren't for Jungmin,
it would have been unbearable.
He was always full of energy.
In Jisub's case,
as a master of action scenes,
he'd take care of everyone's safety.
The staff or the cast?
- All of us. / - Really?
I've never done anything like this before so...
I thought he was part of the stunt team.
I see.
One time, he spotted an exposed nail
behind one of the female staff members.
He quickly blocked her way.
(Stop!)
- It was awesome. / - It was like a scene from a movie.
I didn't push the nail back in though.
I would have yelled at her for standing there,
but Jisub didn't.
Now it's time to see what the cast of
"The Battleship Island" think of each other.
Unlike the island the cast was on,
let's say you're going to a paradise island.
Who would you go with?
In one, two, three.
Two chose Jungmin.
- We all chose him. / - No, you all did.
- Really? / - And Jungmin chose Jisub.
- I fell in love with golfing recently. / - Golfing?
Jungmin is good at it,
so we'll at least have some fun.
- That's why I chose him too. / - Really?
Yes, I heard he was good at golf too.
Do we have access to everything?
- Yes, it's paradise. / - I see.
- I misunderstood the question. / - How?
I thought we were on a deserted island,
so I thought of how I could get off it.
- So you chose Jisub? / - That's right.
He needs someone to do the heavy lifting.
Who will you give credit to the movie being a success?
In one, two, three.
Everyone chose Jungmin. I guess they had to.
- He was our rock. / - It's because I'm malicious.
(He flinches.)
On the set...
We need to have him on set
- for everything to... / - To go smoothly?
It's like I'm interviewing Jungmin
and you all came as his friends.
Your praises make it seem that way.
Why would you ask such a question?
It's all for entertainment.
Joongki, do you agree?
I chose him so that he'll teach me how to golf.
Our new movie tells a unique and precious story
while making sure it's still entertaining.
I guarantee that viewers will thoroughly enjoy it.
- "The Battleship Island". / - Don't forget it.

Can you make that face?
(Smiling)

He's one sweet man.
Last year, when I asked if you think you're handsome,

- He's very humble, isn't he? / - It's nonsense.
Last year, you said people think you're a look-alike.
Do people still say you look like Lee Jehoon?
- Because I did other projects after that, / - Yes.
- now... / - They recognize you.
They clearly recognize me now.
You're more recognized now.

why don't you buy a gift for

I'd love that.
- He will buy a gift for a fan. / - Something cute.
- I think that color is good. / - Is it good?
- How much is this? / - It's pretty.
- It's 16 dollars. / - 16 dollars.
- 16 dollars. / - Can he get a discount?
Only if I get a picture with him.
- Of course. / - How much of a discount would he get?
- Ten percent. / - A ten percent discount.
That's great.
- One more time. / - Okay.
Take one more and give him a 20 percent discount.
- We met the fans. / - Who wants to talk to Jehoon?
Come here.
He's too handsome.
He's too handsome, isn't he?
I'll let you look into his eyes for five seconds.

- You understand Guerrilla Date well. / - Yes.
We also ask the fans to show their talents.
Can you show a talent and entertain Jehoon?
- I will do an impersonation. / - An impersonation.
I'm going to impersonate Park Yeol.
Will she be able to do well?
- You're going to impersonate Park Yeol. / - Yes.

How was she?
- She was just like me. / - Right.
It's my birthday today.
- What's your name? / - Kim Yoojin.
- Happy birthday, dear Yoojin / - How sweet of him.
(He sings a birthday song for her.)
What's this? What's this?
(He's surprised.)
Do you have a child, Jehoon?
- Goodness. / - What's this?
You can't tell everyone.
What's this? What's going on?
What's going on here?
This is from a photo exhibition he participated.
It was to raise awareness about adopted children.
(Jehoon had participated in the photo exhibition.)
- It's Jehoon doing a good deed. / - Taejin is noisy.
This is who I am.
"Lee Jehoon is the best".
How many people do you think will watch this film?
A million people.
(Did she say, "a million"?)
- A million people? / - They're surprised.
- I mean ten million. / - She said a million.
A million.
- She's funny. / - Please be a little more generous.
- Yes. / - I meant ten million.

We will have three volunteers.

- Come on. / - Wait. You look...

(She was the one who sold him the gift.)
- She's been following him. / - She's funny.
Here's the first question.
When was Korea liberated?
- Jehoon. / - August 15, 1945.
- You got it. / - That's it.
That was the right answer.
(Who led provisional government of Korea?)

(The winner is given the gift.)
He's giving her the gift he bought a while ago.
He does everything for his fans.
That was Guerrilla Date with Lee Jehoon.
Everyone was very excited.
We'll move to another place and talk more.
("Anarchist from Colony" is a story of Park Yeol.)
The movie "Anarchist from Colony" is about Park Yeol,
A Joseon delinquent who fought against
the Japanese empire as they tried to conceal
the massacre of the Joseon people.
He participated in the anti-Japanese movement in Tokyo.
He provided hope for
the people in his homeland, Joseon.
This film pays tribute to patriotic martyrs
who sacrificed themselves for the country.
That's what we hope to do.
- You studied for that, didn't you? / No.
You studied on how to be on an interview.
You talk so well.
I got to study a lot about history

I was a high school kid in "Bleak Night".
I was an innocent young man in "Architecture 101".
- That reminds me of when I was 20. / - Yes.
I was bad and rough in "My Paparotti".
I think that's an exaggeration of one side of me.
Right.
- So every character is similar to me. / - Right.
These are the search words related to you.
We got about five here.
The first one is "#old man".
My fans always tell me
that I become too serious when I talk.
And they tell me I'm like an old man.
I'm trying to get rid of that image.
Isn't he cute?
Let's check the next one.
Your "#six-year-old winter jacket".
Why does he wear that jacket every winter?
I became strangely attached to it.
It got through the tough times with me.
- People give me nice new ones. / - Right.
But I can't throw it away.
- I see. / - So
it got burnt, peeled, and ripped.
But that gives me comfort.
Let's check the next one. You are "#good and bad".
- That's new. / - You're good and bad.
