It's been a minute since I discussed anything Sun & Moon related, regarding the anime mostly.
Hey guys, it's SMT, and for any newbies, you, how you doing?
The last time I covered anything Sun & Moon related, minus the direct, was back when the
Sun & Moon anime was teased which was last fall.
And I remember back then when the Kalos league was super hype.
But I'm digressing, I've been keen on watching the Sun and Moon Anime and seeing
how it progressed.
We're up to episode 29 and episode 12 is where the dub is so far.
Briefly lemme talk about the dub for a sec: why does the dub get the shittiest end of
the stick?
The music and script really ruins the pacing of the English dub.
It's not the actual dub itself, the dub is ok, the voices for the most part fit fine,
minus Ash's and Sophocles in my opinion, but the script on one hand is so narrow-minded.
X and Y's English dub had this issue too, where the lines the characters got seem so
simple, so predictable, and so one-dimensional it kinda hurt the dub in a way, and it's
worked its way into here as well.
Some voices for some characters are bad, I will admit, like in Sun & Moon for Sophocles,
in X and Y, Diantha, Alain when he usually shouts Mega Evolve, Marron, etc. but it's
mostly the lines their voice actors and actresses were given that seem so simple and just lacked
emotion and passion, giving the characters in the dub a lack of said emotion.
This was even more evident towards the Kalos league and the Team Flare Arc, like I feel
like Diamond and Pearl had more thought into the script.
While I'm talking Diamond and Pearl, regarding Ash's voice actress, I forget her name but
Ash's current voice is the same one from then/Battle Frontier and to be honest, Ash's
voice during the Sinnoh league was his peak.
After Black and White, and especially during X and Y, when he shouts and gets riled up,
he sounds more and more feminine, which hurt how Ash looked and behaved more maturely in
X and Y.
It hasn't aged well.
With new Ash's design, it fits a little bit more, but it's still bleh.
And of course the English dub's music.
For some reason, they don't stick with the Japanese score unlike the first season and
somewhat the rest, up until Black and White, now they stick with a battle theme and a route
theme, and that's roughly it.
Granted, the Sun & Moon English anime has been slightly more consistent with the Japanese
score, I'm glad some of it is back.
That being said, at least previous seasons reused older Japanese scores in the newer
seasons and they still made English scores, but even then, it was still fitting and pretty
good.
Looking at Diamond and Pearl's English score, especially during the Sinnoh league, they
did use a gym battle theme and maybe a route theme I could be missing, but the English
score still had plenty of rock themes, tenseful violin scores, the kind of music that would
easily fit a specific predicament, like a big battle, or a catastrophe, etc.
In X and Y, it's a bunch of lighter pop, slower improper beats and rhythms that don't
fit at all and it's almost the same for Sun & Moon.
But that's enough regarding the dub.
Regarding the regular sub… it's not that good for me.
Is it terrible?
Hell no.
It's not as bad as Black and White, but honestly I get more Black and White vibes
from this.
I was worried going into the Sun & Moon anime that Ash and the characters would lack the
charm and development they got from X and Y and XY&Z and it would be more along the
lines of Black & white.
In some episodes those worries were laid to rest, but overall those fears have really
been met on several occasions.
Its not the art style or the animation or any of that.
I don't like the art style but the animation is still fluid and good quality and that's
one of the least important factors regarding a high-quality anime.
I feel with some characters there's plenty to love and learn about them while others
you just don't give a shit about.
Lillie for example is probably the best character in the Sun & Moon anime.
Funny how it works as she's one of the best characters in the games too.
She had some incident involving Pokemon in her childhood and now she's afraid to touch
them but is slowly conquering that fear thanks to her new friend, Shiron, aka Alolan Vulpix.
The development and personality between these two is very precious and felt so rewarding
seeing them grow.
Or Kiawe, how he's very passionate about Z Crystals and Z-Moves and want's to become
the fire of Alola.
How he helps his family on the farm, how he's an overprotective big brother, how he's
an overall pretty cool and pretty badass guy.
And even Mallow, how she values her friends a lot, how she wants to run her family business,
how she helps run a restaurant and is sweet and caring, how she wants to make the best
recipes & dishes, etc.
But then there are characters like Lana who likes Water type Pokemon, wants to befriend
the Pokemon of the sea, wants to meet the legendary Pokemon Kyogre, and has 2 younger
siblings.
Aside from Kyogre and the siblings, she sounds a lot like Misty, and beyond all this, I kinda
don't care about her.
Sophocles, I couldn't give two shits about period.
Not only was he undermined in the games, but he's had two episodes focusing on himself
and all that we know is he likes his partner, Togedemaru, and he's a scientist, much like
Clemont.
Apart from being a Clemont clone, there's practically no layers to his character at
all.
Even when Ash gets him a Charjabug later on, it still doesn't feel rewarded or earned
or anything special.
And lastly, Ash and wow how the mighty have fallen.
My biggest worry regarding Ash was he was gonna be dumbed down, immature, similar to
Black & white and the Kanto saga.
For the most part, unfortunately that's the case.
More than half the time, anything regarding school makes Ash look twice as ignorant as
usual, some of his strategies seem half-assed and not as unorthodox as they normally are,
and there's a subtle selfish-ness towards him.
Like, I've noticed most of the time, he interacts with his friends and such mostly
when it has something to do with himself.
Like during the Melemele trial, his friends helped him with one of Kahuna Hala's questions
and they were gone up until Ash's victory celebration.
Or how he joined Kiawe in his episode for ice cream.
Literally ice cream.
Like, Ash can act immature sometimes, but to the point where he's passionate and put
in a state of awe at science or Pokemon battles, not for ice cream or sticking around his friends
against his will.
What I'm getting at here is the character development and personalities feel unbalanced
with some having layers and reasons to adore them and others are just plain and dull.
And it's not just the characters themselves either.
The writing and most of the comedy can get unpredictable.
Some moments make the comedy feel cringed and forced, sometimes it's actually funny
and charming, while most of the time, the faces, the reactions, there's so damn many
of them.
It's gotten to a point where it's too much and it's pushing people away from the
Sun and Moon anime.
It can be funny, yes but most of the time, the faces, the shifting art styles and moments
are so unsettling and unexpected, it's just overwhelming and uncomfortable and it's
happening with so many other Pokemon fans out there and is slowly getting to me too.
It doesn't just affect the story or characters, but the tone some episodes set and then boom,
crazy ass face shoved in your face.
This all ties together with the fact that one of the big problems the anime has, is
not only is there a lack of connection with the fans, but there's a lack of connection
with the main cast.
Mallow's the only reason everyone sticks together outside of school and Ash tags along
mostly, meanwhile most just go off and do their own thing.
There's not much of all of them being together because they want to, it's usually Ash who
finds them and does stuff together usually for himself or for school.
Them being locked down in that school kind of hurts that.
And I'm not gonna go in depth to the whole lack of connection with the group, because
there's a Youtuber I watched who did explain that pretty well, PokemonRangerBoy12, he went
over the problems of the Sun & Moon anime pretty well, I'll link him at the end of
the video, if you're a Pokefan, especially of the anime, I suggest checking him out & subbing
to him.
He does great Pokemon cracks and anime reviews.
But he explained how the sun and moon crew just don't feel like a family and that's
the biggest flaw.
The selfishness brooding, the lack of connectivity, respect, and family previous arcs had.
It took over 20 episodes for Sun & Moon to make the crew feel like a family and feel
connected and endearing.
XY did it in the first 2 episodes, not even.
How Ash snapped out Clemont doubting his status as a gym leader and Ash, Clemont and Bonnie
already gaining an established friendship and wanting to be together as well as travel.
What took XY 2 episodes took Sun and Moon 20.
And some may say it's unfair to compare to XY for whatever reason, yet it is.
When you finish a previous arc of a show, you're gonna have expectations and hopes
for the next one and it's of the same brand and show, it's not like comparing two different
games of different genres.
XY & XY&Z were really good, with the great music (minus the dub), the character development,
the animation, rivals, personality, comradery, the setup, the pacing, etc. of course it would
set standards for the next season because that's what every show does.
XY & XY&Z established that feeling of respect, friendship and connection in the first few
episodes and you could already see how much potential that season had, even beyond the
amazing animation.
Ash still striving to be the best and being super close in doing so, Clemont establishing
his goals and skills as a gym leader and learning from Ash's strategies and philosophies,
Bonnie learning from her older friends and her arc with Squishy/Puni-chan in XY&Z, Serena
establishing her newfound goal of being a Pokemon Performer and learning from Ash and
Clemont and her Pokemon.
The XY crew had goals and stories and were still connected and were still wanting to
be together and grow together.
The progress and growth the crew made as a family was really endearing and amazing to
see because XY went beyond Pokemon standards in the anime.
The pacing was super good, the story and character arcs were very strong, the animation and battles
were amazing, and the development and sheer link between fans and the anime itself was
passionate and fruitful as hell.
I honestly love the XY crew more than the original crew, although Brock needs to return.
With Sun & Moon, there's almost none of that.
PokemonRangerboy12 regarded that disconnection as the biggest problem and I can agree, but
I feel the biggest issues mostly regard the pacing and imbalance of the entire anime.
The character development, personality, and overall mood are just not well structured.
Ash is more childish, Sophocles has practically no development, despite getting two episodes
focused on him, Lana's didn't go that far, Mallow's has potential after one episode & really
the only characters with actual growth & development are Kiawe and especially Lillie, who's getting
3 total now.
The comedy in Sun & Moon hurting more than helping.
Sometimes the comedy can get pretty overwhelming and can shove fans away.
Yes, sometimes it can be funny, but other times it can feel forced, unnecessary, and
mostly just too much, almost like it's a different anime entirely.
And some moments that are sad go by too quick and are unrealistically solved, like Litten's
loss, and the past 20 episodes have felt like borderline filler.
How fast they went thru the first trial, and over 20 episodes of not even hyping up the
2nd trial.
Pacing and an improper balance of personality, characters & tone.
I feel like other fans feel similarly in regards to this but this is how I feel.
If you like it, that's fine, glad you can enjoy it.
For me, the whole XY arc, and even the Diamond & Pearl arc, even through all that filler,
felt consistently good, it felt steadily action packed, endearing, passionate, badass, emotional
and feelings you would expect other anime to give you.
Sun and Moon doesn't for me.
I just wish it could've been better and not so driven on comedy and laughs because that
and the lack of focus on characters, structure and growth are just hurting the anime.
I love Pokemon, plus the anime, I'm not trying to hate on Sun & Moon either.
I just want it to get better.
If Diamond and Pearl, let alone X and Y, could reach fair consistency and healthy balances,
I know the Sun and Moon anime can too and we've seen small glimpses of that.
I want the anime to do well, this is just my own constructive criticism, and if you
still love it, then fine, it's all good, but I just wish for Sun & Moon to strive a
little bit more.
That's all I pretty much gotta say.
Thanks for watching this video and stick around for more Pokemon, and other things Nintendo
related as well.
Stay super.
