the cleanup guy is a staple of popular culture we have seen it in movies like
Pulp Fiction and even episodes of shows like Seinfeld a person who comes in
after gory crimes have been committed and with a handy bottle of bleach tries
to make it look like nothing ever happened before the police arrived
never once in my life have I wished that I could step into the shoes of one of
these cleaners but here I am defying the laws of physics by sweeping up blood
with what may be Maytag 1972 model vacuum and throwing bodies into my trunk
all while avoiding police who have a very particular cone of vision serial
cleaner is an interesting beast indeed
serial cleaner is a top-down stealth game very reminiscent of early Metal Gear
games you collect a certain number of items in each level in this case bodies
remove them from the level as well as picking up a few other items all while
avoiding being spotted and using hiding spots to your advantage so what makes
serial cleaner different the first thing you notice about serial cleaner is
just how stylish the whole experience is for the moment you turn the game on you
are greeted with this beautiful art that extends from the menus to the gameplay
everything looks like it was ripped straight out of guacamelee or one of
those daytime cartoons that air on Disney Channel at 2:30 in the afternoon when no
one is around to watch them the game is a pretty sight to behold with sharp
edges and geometric shapes creating an almost Paper Mario like aesthetic this
is coupled with a grungy color palette that matches the setting of the game the
early 1970s and an excellent soundtrack that is a fusion of 70s rock with a bit
of funk and jazz tossed in for good measure it's a very good thing that the
soundtrack and aesthetics are spot-on because there isn't much story here to
get invested in this nineteen seventies tale of a man with a peculiar job is one
that is only surface deep and just serves to move you from level to level
while a game of this nature doesn't necessarily demand an engrossing Quentin
Tarantino style crime drama a bit more context would have been great and given
me an added purpose to push on through some of the difficulty found in the
later levels of the game
gameplay is always king and serial cleaner delivers on this front for the
most part the gameplay loop of removing the bodies vacuuming the blood and
finding the evidence is one that is consistently shifting due to new
mechanics that are slowly introduced throughout the games campaign what starts
out as a simple game of cat-and-mouse slowly turns into a bout of strategy as
you flip switches move entire ships and try to trap cops by pinning them between
crates each level is made easier given the player's ability to zoom out on the
map at any time to see the location of police and objectives giving the player
the opportunity to plan out their route and execute like a smooth criminal
little touches like sliding while walking over blood and a collection of evidence
you accrue at your house at their levels at a charm and polish that endear you to
the idea of grabbing just a few more bodies while it is definitely fun to
pull off the perfect cleaning run some of the challenge is alleviated due to
antiquated video game logic if a cop does spot you vacuuming up a pool of
blood or attempting to make your getaway simply running behind cover will often
cause them to give up pursuit and forget about your existence after a few
seconds not to mention the fact that ducking into a cardboard box like Solid
Snake will lose the cops completely even if they want to hop in the box as though
their Dory from Finding Nemo these AI issues combined with a constantly
visible cone of vision and relatively stagnant movement patterns keep this
game for being a true chess match of strategy that is not to say that this
game does not provide a challenge at all as later levels throw tighter spaces and
more cops your way to make for a grueling but often enjoyable trek
through the blood and guts on display you begin to see new variations of police
some of the more speed and even some of the tasers that can end your run before
you even have a chance to hide however given the AI problems this shift in
difficulty isn't always welcomed as these later levels can prove more
frustrating and artificially difficult than rewarding and this couple with the
frustrating uncertainty of whether a roll or box will shield you from a
vision of the cops regardless of other similar items do can lead to some anger
fueled rage when you're not throwing corpses over your shoulder or grabbing
evidence there are collectables on stages that range from cosmetic clothing
to film reels that unlock film themed bonus levels these are some of the
coolest levels in the game and are too awesome to spoil until you've seen them
for yourself it's just unfortunate that some of the best levels of the game can
be missed entirely if one is it prudent in their custodial duties the good
news is a serial cleaner does not overstay its welcome and end its
campaign before the player begins to find the cleaning too tedious the
content that is here is long and expansive enough to justify its $15
price tag and the collectibles and bonus stages will provide added replay value
for those that can't get enough of the cleaning action overall serial cleaner
is a fun aesthetically pleasing stealth game that is marred by some AI problems
and a lack of a real story to match its beautiful aesthetics thus preventing the
game from really separating itself from the path within a selfie onre however
there is fun to be had here and I would pay the price of entry just for the
phone it's movie levels alone and still wholeheartedly recommend this game to
any self and especially at its sweet $15 price points serial cleaner gets a 7 out
of 10 if you enjoyed this review smash that like button down below and hit
