Martin (TV Series) - A Retrospective Review - Duration: 7:34.
The old saying is that comedy is not science, it's an art.
While everyone enjoys having a laugh, getting one is somewhat complicated.
Comedians have resorted to everything; from pure debauchery to honest commentary on life
all in the name of humor.
Martin Lawrence was one of the talented few who could jump from one extreme to another
with what often came off a reckless abandon.
Like many legends of comedy, he made it clear that he would and could do anything for a
laugh.
Nowhere was this more evident than on his hit sitcom, Martin.
It all started in 1994.
If you're black and around the age of 30, then you probably remember Fox's Thursday
night lineup of Martin, Living Single and New York Undercover way back when.
Prime-time network television had never been more black and to kids like me, it was
absolutely amazing.
Not only did it provide three dimensional characters and stories from urban communities,
it proved that black and Latino viewers were worth creating material for.
Yeah, we had The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Cosby Show, but this block of TV was something
totally different.
It was grounded.
It was relatable.
It was hip-hop.
For five seasons, Martin operated like peak episodes of Saturday Night Live, where ad-libbing
and clever writing came together to create memorable comedy.
Of all of Fox's Thursday night shows, Martin stood out primarily because of its
star.
From 1992 to 1997, Martin Lawrence played Martin Payne, an on-air personality for the
fictional Detroit radio station WZUP.
or....
Deep down he's a sweetheart, but on the outside he's a total jerk, which is part
of this show's magic.
At its core, Martin is about an outspoken black man struggling to maintain his identity
in a rapidly changing world.
Most of that change had to do with Tisha Campbell's Gina Waters, Martin's strong, independent
and loving lady.
Alongside their band of friends, Martin and Gina was your everyday couple trying to survive
everyday struggles.
At its core, Martin was more of a continuation of classics like Good Times or The Honeymooners
than any other sitcom that aired in the 90s.
Granted, it doesn't have the most original archetype, but the characters and comedy are
what separates it from the rest.
Let's start with Tichina Arnold's often scene stealing performance as Pamela James,
the protective best friend of Gina and mortal enemy of Martin.
In some alternate reality there's an equally funny sitcom called Pamela that follows her
instead of Mr. Payne.
I say this because she's a female clone of Martin, matching him in wit and energy.
Check out this clip of her spot-on impression of Martin after being hypnotized during a dental visit...
Her traits make for a captivating adversary and one of the most enjoyably volatile relationships
in television history.
Carl Anthony Payne and the late Thomas Ford played Martin's best friends, the dim-witted
Cole Brown and the ever-charming Tommy Strawn.
Like most loyal homeboys, they often instigated strife between our central couple by pulling
Martin back into his inconsiderate and unrefined alpha-male ways.
Martin and Gina's relationship is undeniably the show's foundation, but the chemistry
of the cast is what shines the most.
For proof, look no further than the assortment of running gags which often had to do with
hilarious roasting.
And just like in real life, everyone got it.
Friends, family, strangers, everyone.
Martin's big ears, Gina's big head, Pam's hair, Tommy's suspicious employment and
well…Cole.
As with any good sitcom, the comedy was layered and covered a wide range of topics like racism
and sexism.
Alongside the outrageousness of the Player's Ball, the K-Ci & JoJo duet, and Martin's
boxing match with Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns, there's also the seriousness of episodes
like The Break-Up.
In addition to special guest features from the likes of The Notorious B.I.G. and Richard
Pryor, you had some of the most memorable supporting characters in sitcom history.
How could you forget Reginald Ballard's Bruh-Man, the super chill and often intruding
neighbor from the fifth floor?
If all that wasn't enough, Martin played an impressive total of 9 totally different
characters.
While some critics will point at his perpetuation of black stereotypes as a major flaw, I would
argue that characters like Jerome Roscoe, Mama Payne and the infamous Sheneneh Jenkins
were all tongue-in-cheek, inside jokes intended to help black people to laugh at themselves
as well as others.
This was an inherently black production and far from the sitcoms in the 70s that were
written and produced by white figures such as Norman Lear.
Martin stands out as one of the best representations of the everyday urban experience.
Most black people could look up to the well-off families in The Cosby Show, A Different World
and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but relating to them was another story.
Amazingly, Martin was able to balance often outrageous comedy with genuine focus on real
middle class issues.
Instead of poverty, drugs or broken homes, we got stories about tough love, friendship
and self-identity.
And that is the true genius of Martin.

Ivanka Trump keeps quiet on dad's tweets assailing TV host - Duration: 3:39.
Ivanka Trump has been vocal in using her White House role to advocate for women.
But when President Donald Trump lobbed a demeaning attack on a female TV host on Twitter this
week, his daughter and senior adviser kept quiet.
It was a moment of silence that spoke to the challenges and calculations Ivanka Trump faces
as she tries to promote family-friendly policies in an administration led by a man whose comments
about women have made women cringe and drawn bipartisan rebuke.
In recent weeks, the younger Trump has discussed family leave with lawmakers, traveled to promote
job-training efforts and spoken out against human trafficking.
She's also tried to position herself as above the political fray, saying in one interview
that she tries to "stay out of politics" and in another that she's been surprised by the
"level of viciousness" in Washington politics.
The tussle between her father and "Morning Joe" co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough
offered a pointed reminder to Ivanka Trump that this is a city where it's impossible
to separate policy and politics.
The MSNBC hosts, in a Washington Post column Friday, called on women close to the president
to condemn him for questioning Brzezinski's intelligence and saying that she was "bleeding
badly from a face-lift" in a December encounter.
"It would be the height of hypocrisy to claim the mantle of women's empowerment while allowing
a family member to continue such abusive conduct," Brzezinski and Scarborough wrote.
Ivanka Trump did not respond to questions about the president's tweet or how it affects
her policy efforts.
While she has won some praise for trying to tackle complex issues that are not traditionally
high on the Republican agenda, such as paid family leave and child care expenses, liberal
advocates said her recent evasion tactics were not helpful in building bipartisan bridges.
"Moments like this make it much harder for advocates that have spent decades fighting
gender stereotypes and discrimination and advancing women's equality to view her as
a potential ally," said Vicki Shabo, vice president of the National Partnership for
Women & Families.
Said Emily's List President Stephanie Schriock, "She's never been one who stood up when it
mattered most."
The administration has already been criticized for the limited number of women in top positions.
And the White House Council for Women and Girls, established under President Barack
Obama to ensure women are considered in policymaking, has not been active under Trump.
Following a report in Politico that the administration was reviewing whether to keep the council,
a senior administration official said there are plans to keep it in place, though details
and timing still are being worked out.
The official was not authorized to discuss internal thinking on the matter on the record.
Earlier this week, Ivanka Trump appeared at a State Department ceremony unveiling an annual
U.S. report on human trafficking, sounding "a clarion call into action in defense of
the vulnerable and the exploited."
At the same time, however, she has come under criticism for harsh conditions at a Chinese
company that produces shoes for her fashion brand and others.

William has a new family member! Congraz ♥ [The Return of Superman / 2017.07.02] - Duration: 12:09.
Where are Sam and William going on this sunny day?
Isn't it nice?
William, there are flowers.
Isn't it pretty? It's right here. Here.
We're going to meet someone very special today.
Shall we go?
Are you happy? Let's go.
William, do you know where we are?
It'll be your first time in person.
Right? William?
(First time in person?)
This is mine.
No, no. It's too hot.
It's hot.
(He stares at Sam's mouth.)
(William smacks his lips.)
(He's finally trying the herb tea.)
(It's his first time smelling such a scent.)
William, is it tasty?
Is it good? Do you want it again?
(Give me another sip. One isn't enough.)
(It smells good.)
Do you like it that much? Okay, I got it.
(For some reason, Sam seems nervous.)
Right then, a woman approaches Sam and William.
(A woman is approaching the two men.)
I'm here.
(Is it their first time meeting this woman?)
- Mom. / - Mom.
- What is he doing? / - It's William's mom, Yumi.
(Peeking)
- Here. / - Is this for me?
Thank you.
- William picked it. / - Really?
Thank you, William.
This must be a special day.
- Hello. / - Hello.
- Hello. / - Hello.
Let's sit. I have morning sickness.
- It's very bad. / - Is it?
(Sputtering)
(They say suckling will make rain come.)
(Does this mean a guest will visit?)
What a surprise.
We prayed for it,
and we're finally having William's little sibling.
Gosh, really?
Congratulations.
Congratulations.
(William's little sibling?)
We didn't think it would actually happen.
We're so happy since it worked right away.
In order to have William,
we tried so many things.
We tried artificial insemination twice,
which failed both times.
We tried in vitro fertilization twice,
and we didn't have any news.
She got pregnant on the third try,
but she had a miscarriage seven weeks in.
(William said his first hello with his heartbeat.)
(William was like a miracle.)
William came to Sam and Yumi like a miracle.
(He's showing his cute arms and legs.)
He grew up well in his mom's womb
and became irreplaceable to his parents.
I'm not sure if you can see her,
but that's my wife behind me.
(Sam recorded the moment of William's birth.)
Can you see her? I'm not sure if you can.
(Three hours later)
Again, again.
(Yumi was in labor for 15 hours.)
After 15 hours of labor,
she had William through a C-section.
(For William, she endured 15 hours.)
After a long struggle,
the best gift of their lives, William was born.
When we had William,
he was precious to us because it was hard to have him.
Since I'm the only child,
I didn't want William to grow up alone.
I'm so happy he doesn't have to be alone now.
Truly happy.
William, look. Who is this?
What is that?
Look. Who is that?
It's your baby sibling.
(Focused)
It's your little sibling.
(Hello, my sibling.)
This is the head.
(I'm William.)
This is the body. It's very active.
It's turning its head.
It even crouches and stretches.
It's moving very well.
(Sam can't take his eyes off.)
I'll let you listen.
Does it have all five fingers and toes?
You can kind of see them, but it's not clear.
- It's too small. / - Yes.
We'll listen to its heartbeat.
(It has a strong heartbeat.)
(Yumi is finally smiling brightly.)
(Listening)
The heartbeat is regular.
It's going at 150 to 160.
It's beating well.
Am I feeling sick because it moves too much?
No.
Mom.
Are you jealous? Look. What's wrong?
Look at this.
Look at this.
(I hope we get along.)
What is that?
When will we know the gender?
We can't tell yet.
Do you want a little brother or a little sister?
Do this if you want a little girl.
Go like this.
A little girl?
(Pointing)
(Will it be a girl?)
Go like this.
- A little girl? / - Let's clap.
A little girl will be just as cute as William.
The results from last week came out.
They're the congenital anomaly test and blood test
to check for any abnormalities.
We also check for microdeletion syndrome.
My wife is older than I am.
Health is always a worry.
I'm worried about the baby's health.
(He's worried about Yumi and the baby.)
I hope there aren't any problems.
What will the test result show?
(Please...)
We checked the sex chromosome and there are
no abnormalities. You're in the low risk group.
Your results say that everything is good.
Okay.
(Mom and Dad, don't worry.)
(Sam is feeling more relaxed now.)
What's wrong?
I was most worried about this.
(He never told Yumi, but he was worried.)
It's most important to have a healthy baby.
Of course.
Since it's healthy, I'm not worried anymore.
(He's a husband and a father.)
It's difficult as it is,
but if we end up having a third child...
(A third child?)
I've seen a 54-year-old woman have a baby.
We had someone in our hospital.
We can go up to ten.
- Do you want a soccer team? / - 54.
(Sam will have a soccer team.)
You have to watch your weight and your diet.
You have to help her feel secure.
It'll help a lot.
Did you hear that?
Yes, ma'am.
- Hello. / - Hello.
(William is busy greeting them.)
(Hello.)
William, what's that?
It's huge.
(They're huge bags of rice puffs.)
Right?
(Focused)
Do you like rice puffs?
He loves them.
- Really? / - Yes.
(He can't take his eyes off of them.)
Why are you staring at him like that?
Are you jealous?
Do you want to ride on it?
Do you want to go on top?
(It fits William perfectly.)
You're the king of rice puffs.
(He's on a rice puff cart.)
Yes, William.
(He's so full of swag.)
(Put your hands up.)
Are you having fun?
Hello. I'm the rice puff king, William.
Nice to meet you.
- Say hello. / - Hello, William.
(The whole market is smiling.)
Hello.
(King of rice puffs, William)
William, you have to get off now.
He has to go work.
(Struggling)
No, he has to sell these.
Good luck.
- Thank you. / - Bye.
Bye.
Ma'am, do you have omija?
Yes, we do.
Is this good for morning sickness?
Yes, it's also good for dry mouths.
If your mouth is dry, you can have it.
It's good for your nose and throat, too.
- Is that so? / - Yes.
(Sam tries the omija tea.)
- Can babies have it? / - It's okay.
He's drinking it so well.
(What does William think of the tea?)
Is it good?
(Put your hands up.)
(It's the best.)
(Whenever he finds foods he likes,)
(he raises his hands.)
(William's taste test, one star)
It's gone. You drank it all.
Please give us one.
(He's buying omija.)
Do you want one, William?
We don't give him sugar yet.
- This one doesn't have any. / - I'm sorry.
Thank you.
(It's going straight into Sam's mouth.)
(Staring)
(How will this donut taste?)
After the omija tea, he's having his first donut.
How will it taste?
(Eureka!)
(William's taste test, three stars)
(I have to buy these.)
William, do you want to try it?
(What kind of food is it this time?)
If you eat a lot of pupa,
- you get more strength. / - Really?
(Sam can't eat it.)
It's hard even for adults to eat. Will William eat it?
(He takes a look,)
(then chews on it.)
There's nothing you can't eat.
You're amazing.
I can't eat it.
- You're eating it so well. / - He is.
(It tastes better when I chew it.)
Is it good?
(William's taste test, two stars)
You can eat with one hand. Why are you using two?
Is this okay? We'll take one.
Okay.
You can eat all you want at home.
(Let's bring it for Mom.)

HOW I LEARN ENGLISH BY WATCHING TV SHOWS - vocabulary, hacks, topics - Duration: 13:15.
Hello guys and welcome to my channel in this video I'm going to talk about TV
shows that helped me learn new English vocabulary there are loads of words that
I still do not know, that are from particular topics of our lives and I
don't feel this urge to actually sit down and learn them. But there are
certain things that I can do every day to improve my English and you can
totally do them! And this thing is super easy - it's just watching a TV show in
English! so I'm going to talk about my most favorite TV shows that hook me up,
that make me watch them every day, and because I'm watching them every day in
English, I'm learning new words every time. If you're interested, please
continue watching this video.
The first show I'm going to talk about is the Silicon Valley, because I live in
San Francisco and Silicon Valley is really close (some people consider
San Francisco to be a part of the Silicon Valley). There are loads of offices here and also
run one startup and the Silicon Valley show is a highlight of my weekend
because every Sunday I wait for the new show to come out and they always talk
about a lot of things that are connected with startup live like fundraising and
legal stuff and actually Silicon Valley life and there are so many particular
things that you can learn from the show what if I told you there's an app on the
market I'm not aware oh you wait - you're inside okay you haven't even
gotten the bottle of water yet Hedden I'll meet you in there I just need to
finish this call sure cool with a k' okay for example pitching your company
you will hear a lot of pitches during the show and you will learn how to make
the elevator pitch you will see bad examples of pitching your company just
like this one and you would be able if you're running your company you would be
able to imagine yourself in the same situation jinyang what are you doing
this is Palo Alto people are lunatics about smoking here we don't enjoy all
the freedoms that you have in China also Silicon Valley show talks a lot about
Silicon Valley culture like drinking kombucha I actually have ha an MC bottle
just here with me and about quitting smoking because nobody smokes here
everyone is about healthy lifestyle and houses that they show are really typical
for the Silicon Valley they talk about pricing they talk about you know they
actually use the actual meeting spots for example the Four Seasons Hotel in
Palo Alto it wasn't some series of the show so it really gives you this inside
in the Silicon Valley lifestyle well done so what kind of terms she do you
think she's gonna wanna leave a lot of work to do but you certainly knew how to
play to your audience so I'd say it looks good oh and as I said Silicon
Valley show has a lot of vocabulary that is connected to fundraising like term
sheet which is an offer from you to investor with your with your company's
valuation with how much money they going to invest so guys if you're dreaming up
running your company in the Silicon Valley or if you're interested about IT
stuff Silicon Valley is a must see show I love it it's my number one right now
the second show that I really like and where I take all of my legal vocabulary
from is the suits I have started watching them back and I think 2013 and
if you're interested in becoming a lawyer in the States I think this is the
first thing you should start with like watch the suits you will get acquainted
with a legal culture with the East Coast culture it's completely different from
the Silicon Valley everybody wears suits this is and everybody's like those
lawyers they drive cool cars they go to parties and this will give you an
impression of how the best law firms function in the United States he wants a
trial I'll give him a goddamn trial Your Honor
the example of words that you can learn from this movie is a very mental trial
which is when you're going to trial actually go to go to the courtroom and
negotiate with a judge and present yourself and yeah you know what I'm
talking about right and how they talk to charge they call the judge your honor so
all of those legal things illegal lifestyle I would say this like Silicon
Valley is for intermediate / upper intermediate this I would say upper
intermediate level of English because there are lots of specific words that
you would not know and sometimes they would prevent you from understanding the
plot so if you are intermediate and you want to watch the suit I would recommend
switching on English subtitles Your Honor this is the fraudulent attorney I
spoke with you about before trial we asked that he either refrain from
speaking or be removed from the court with an immediate ruling with the
dismissal is with Bridget other words that have learned from this
show are fraudulent attorney which is like spake attorney and dismiss the case
stop the case like all of those Lexus and talk with prejudice which means that
you have some particular attitude to the case before you actually start the case
so you have some some of your own interests and this is by the way how I
advise you guys to translate the words do not translate them into your own
language we try to guess their meaning from the contest contest and context and
maybe use English the English vocabulary so you would be able to learn the word
with its meaning and not with its translation into your own language make
sure what's going on I'm not getting into the bar probably real problem might
I have a way to get you into the bar and what's the catch
we know what's wrong with you is wrong with me is I don't feel like going back
to prison and another very important topic in this show is taking L SAT the
exam that you need to get into masters in legal education in the states and
also taking the bar exam the the exam that you need to take to
become a lawyer in the state and actually shot a real bar exam so they
show how the experience look like and they showed Rachel with the main
character they're preparing for the L SAT and I know many people are for
watching this vlog we'll be taking some of those exams so I think it's really
useful and even if you don't have anything to do with a legal sphere like
me for example it was still really a good time for me watching this is the
next show is actually this first show I started watching in English and this is
the first show that I seen from the very beginning up to the very end so I
started with house m.d. and then I went on to the Sex in the City and whatever
but house m.d. was really helpful in terms of medical English and in terms of
in terms of understanding how American medical system works because when you
watch house m.d. you get an idea how doctors cabinet looks like how doctor
talks to you using her inhaler all the time go through one a week
you sure you're using it right do I look like an idiot
no would you show me how your inhaler works just and there are loads of worse
that you can learn from house m.d. for example the easiest one is inhalers the
thing they used to fight your asthma or if they're as other like names of
diseases and I feel this is really helpful and it also helped me when I
came here I knew how medical system in America works because I was like I don't
six seasons of house m.d. and you're learning new new medical stuff you're
learning how you describe different diseases so definitely watch house m.d.
they also talk about medical exam so if you're looking to become a doctor in the
state this is the number one thing that you should do as long as your daughter
had trouble breathing about a week now the best dads wait two or more no it's
not like it's serious I checked online and I have more something or something
it's the number one killer teens no medical and needless to say his humor is
amazing you're going to laugh I know hundreds of times during just one
episode you're going to love it so house m.d. please watch if you're
interested in medical English the fourth show is thousands of cards house of
cards is the show where you get acquainted with an American political
system you see a guy who wants to become a president and how he actually becomes
president through sabotage gossip um bribes whatever so all of the tedious
political schemes there they are shown in this show and there are lots of
things that you can learn from it as well
my personal favorite is how on the main actor says yes this is the East Coast
accent I guess an upper-class accent so he's so like you have to listen to it
okay with solemnly swear I Francis J
Underwood do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute that I will
faithfully execute the office of President of the United States the
office of print yes here we go again Secretary of State that's what I wanted
that's all I wanted that's what I was promised and now here I am president of
these United States as you know guys I come from Russia and they say our
President Vladimir Putin has actually watched this show so yeah I guess if
you're a politician or you want to become politician interest in politics
house of cards must see the only thing that you should know is that English
there's really complicated so Fair times when I do not get what they mean and I
guess your level should be advanced to watch it without vocabulary or you
should wash it with subtitles maybe sometimes even in your own language
because there are so many things that you're not if you're know coded politics
aren't just sending them in a foreign language like English would make it even
more difficult but please feel free to try and let me know if you've already
seen house of cards let me know if you're getting the idea of what they try
to say and the last but not the least is the madman the madman is the show about
marketing and advertising in the United States in the 60s everything takes place
in New York and New York and success is amazing like the fashion that they have
there and the music is adorable but the most important thing there is they teach
you how to tell a story and storytelling is a really important skill for any
entrepreneur because you need to tell a story to your customers you need to tell
a story to investors you need to tell story to your partners and in the madman
you see the main character Don Draper presenting every day he's presenting to
to these companies an advertising company in he's presenting advertising
ideas to their clients it's clean simple and it's tantalizingly and complete
what's missing one thing
pastor Hines you mean the Heinz ketchup it's Himes it only means one thing it
feels like half an ad the greatest thing you have working for you is not the
photo you take or the picture you paint it's the imagination of the consumer
they have no budget they have no time limit and if you can get into that space
your ad can run all day and you know what highest actually bought that ad
from the movie creators and they paid them a lot of money and actually placed
it on air settings the great job was done behind the toe so if you're
interested in marketing if you are interested in how people create ads and
how creative marketing works the madman is definitely something you need so
