Some of the drummers are
not familiar with musical theory.
like tonic, or dominant.
Harmony things, major, minor
Or tensions.
And actually I was one of them.
I was not get used to use
That kind of terminology and
the theory.
But
I recommend to learn
at least the foundation of the musical theory.
because
If you play in a band,
unless you are playing with just percussion group.
or percussion solo artist.
if you are in a band
there is always musical theory.
which the some other guys are playing.
like a piano player, bass player
guitar player, or singer.
So if you understand at least the foundation of musical theory,
it's pretty helpful to set up your drum phrase.
For example, if you hear 2-5 chord progression.
it means
You can expect
next chord should be, maybe
the Tonic, the 1.
2-5-1, Re Sol Do
So you can set up the drum fill for that.
Two, Fiiiiiiiiiive, one!!!
So it's pretty helpful and also musical.
And next thing is
it's super helpful to say your opinion.
For example, when you guys are arranging the song
with band members
and you got the idea
How about put one more bar
between this section and this section?
And if you cannot
suggest which chord is right
on that measure.
People might not understand
if that idea is great or not.
Even it could be the great idea.
so
If you learn a couple of chord progressions.
"Maybe we should extend this chord
to the another bar." or
"Maybe we put this chord
because the previous one is this and
next one is this." or
"Let's change the next chord."
You can suggest something.
Which is very helpful.
to make your opinion stronger.
So I highly recommend and
one more tip is use the piano.
Because you can see the actual interval.
So it's easy to understand.
construction of each chord.
like C major is C, E, G.
But if you are trying to study with a guitar.
pretty hard.
At first, you have to understand which fret is which note.
So C.... which one? it takes time.
So I highly recommend to, just for the learning purpose,
use the piano.
