This week: Let's talk about sexism, baby. This is Seriously Seven Days.

Thank you for joining us. I'm your host Bryan Parmelee and once again there is a

fantastic issue of Seven Days out in the world now, and on the cover is a story

that might have been a bit of a bombshell for certain readers. It turns

out that not only are females funny; there is a whole gaggle of hilarious

women right here in Vermont and they're actually the driving force behind the

state's robust and growing comedy scene. Now, despite the prevalence of women it

turns out that sexism is still an issue. To help us better understand this

phenomenon and what we can do to avoid it I've decided to have a chat with

comedian and co-owner of the Vermont Comedy Club, Natalie Miller. I'm going to

head there now. You should come too.

Alright, I'm here with Natalie Miller. Thank you so much for joining us,

Thank you for having me.

Of course. You'll notice I installed a sexism button, so if any sexist remark should be said you can

just hit that little button. I can't imagine it will be a problem, though.

Can I just? You know it's not exactly a remark, but the pink thing? Like I don't — it's

not my favorite color, I mean, we don't need to like gender the interview.

Can we just go to like a bar or something?

I'm here at a bar with Natalie Miller. Thank you for joining us. So I brought you here because you are one of my favorite

female comedians. Okay I'm sorry, I could have worded that better.

You are very funny for a girl.

No, try again.

You are hilarious for a woman.

No, try again. How about just like a comedian? You are a funny comedian.

You are a hilarious comedian, period.

I invited you here because you are a hilarious comedian.

And you are also the co-owner of a comedy club, the Vermont Comedy Club in Burlington.

Yes, correct.

You do not look like a club owner.

What is that supposed to mean? Ok, so anyone can do anything no matter what

they look like. I'm a female comedy club owner and there are plenty

of us all across the country and the world.

That's great. So when you're when you're booking shows at the club — we just found out this week in

the cover story there are a bunch of hilarious female comedians in Vermont.

Yea, it's a great scene. How do you decide which one to put on the bill so people know you're not sexist?

Which one? So it's not like a quota thing. We're not like, "Oh we need

one woman on every bill." Like, it might be all women because we just book who's funny.

Well, I guess I've noticed there are more famous male comedians than

female comedians, right? So is there something the females can do to be as

funny as the men and get on more shows?

What the? What is wrong with this — where did you find this guy? Can I just get somebody else or?

Yea, let's move on. So, let's say I'm at the Vermont Comedy Club watching a show. Now, I

understand that heckling is very frowned upon. Yes definitely.

What do I do if there's a woman on stage and I feel like her set is lagging and I

want to help her out with what can I yell — Nothing just — you know I'm just gonna

hold this — um nothing. Don't yell anything because she doesn't

need your help, okay? She's a pro. But what if she says a joke — maybe it's about men —

and I suddenly feel the need to defend myself? Like, what should I say? Because not all men are pigs.

No, just like open your ears listen to what she has to say.

Ok, listen — right. Okay you don't have to mansplain comedy.

I'm not trying to explain anything, but what if — let's say she's very attractive

and I want to let her know that she's hot. No no, it's not a confidence

boost. That would be like objectifying her in her place,

like would you ever yell to Aziz Ansari onstage? And be like, "Oh you're hot!"

Well no, he's a professional comedian. That would be rude. Yeah, what you just said. Oh, I see

what you did there. Good. Good I'm glad you saw. Is this...

Ok, just one more question, I promise. I've noticed that female

comedians often discuss their fertility cycle during their set. What is up with that?

Are you talking about periods? Gross! It's not gross, it's a normal thing. It's our reality.

I don't know why do guys always talk about their dicks?

Are you laughing at the word dicks?

I wasn't ready for that. That is hilarious. Seriously where did you find this guy? I can't. Dicks.

But we were learning so much. Dicks. Oh my god. You keep saying it. Bye. What?

the things Bryan was saying have been said to me in real life, by real people.

Just be nice to people. Women are funny. Respect comedians.

If you add too much eye makeup, the whirl will adjust the balance

What does John 14:1-3 tell us about the rapture? - Duration: 2:13.

And we're going to take another passage, and this is fascinating.

This is the Lord Jesus Himself, so we can't argue.

These are His words.

I want to put it up on the screen.

I want you to see it.

John 14:1-3, Jesus said, "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also

in me."

Then He said, "In my Father's house are many mansions: If it were not so, I would

have told you.

I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself;

that where I am, there ye may be also."

Mark, there are four things that Jesus tells us, at least, in this passage.

And the first one, He says, "In my Father's house are many mansions," or dwelling places.

Where is the Father's house?

Boston?

Hitchcock: Well, the Father's house is in heaven.

I think this is just a synonym; it's another word in the scripture to describe heaven.

The Bible calls where we will go the third heaven, or heaven; it calls it paradise.

I think this is the same as the heavenly city, the New Jerusalem described in Revelation

21-22.

But I think this is a beautiful description that Jesus gives here of the Father's house.

It speaks obviously of a place where there's plenty of room for everyone; it speaks of

home.

I think the best thing about the Father's house, we could say it's paid for—it's

been paid for for us through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Ankerberg: But He starts it out, this is a specific place.

Hitchcock: It is.

Ankerberg: A specific location, which all the rest of these words in this passage revolve

around.

Hitchcock: Right.

It's a real place.

Ankerberg: If we don't get the spot where He's talking about, we're going to miss

the impact of what He's saying.

Hitchcock: That's right.

Ankerberg: "In my Father's house," which is in heaven.

Hitchcock: Right.

That's right.

LET'S GIVE YOU DETAILS ON THOSE MEETINGS.

THINK PROGRESS REPORTS AFTER MONTHS OF RECEIVING

REQUESTS FOR MEETINGS FROM ADVOCATES FOR SEXUAL.

I WAS, EDUCATION SECRETARY BETSY DEVOS IS FINALLY DECIDED

TO SIT DOWN WITH THEM.

GOOD NEWS.

BUT IS ALSO MEETING WITH GROUPS THAT ARE CRITICAL OF THE

TITLE NINE GUIDANCE ON CAMPUS RAPE, SOME OF WHICH HAVE

HISTORIES OF DATING RAPE SURVIVORS AND DISMISSING

DOMESTIC ABUSE AGAINST WOMEN.

I'M SURE THEY WOULD DISAGREE WITH THAT CHARACTERIZATION,

POLEMIC OBESITY TELLS ME MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND.

THE DEPARTMENT REACH OUT TO THE NATIONAL COALITION FOR MEN,

SAVE, THAT IS STOP ABUSIVE AND VIOLENT ENVIRONMENTS, AND

FAMILIES ADVOCATING FOR CAMPUS EQUALITY.

SOME OF THOSE GROUPS SOUND REASONABLE.

WHY WHEN YOU WANT CAMPUS EQUALITY?

CERTAINLY PROGRESSIVES WHAT.

SOME OF WHAT THEY DO IS NOT OUTRAGEOUS.

IF SOMEONE HAS BEEN FALSELY ACCUSED OF RAPE, PROTECTING

THAT PERSON IS A GOOD THING AND NO ONE WANTS FALSE ACCUSATIONS

OF ANYTHING, LET ALONE SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AS RAPE.

THE REALITY IS THAT THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN VERY OFTEN, I'M

GOING TO GIVE YOU THE STAFF ON A LITTLE BIT LATER, AND THERE

IS A GOOD ARGUMENT TO BE MADE THIS MOVE THESE GROUPS ARE

NOT WORRIED ABOUT JUST PROTECTING INNOCENT VICTIMS

OF FALSE ACCUSATIONS, BUT THINK THAT THE ISSUES OF CAMPUS

RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT ARE A LITTLE OVER DONE.

LET'S DIVE INTO THE DETAILS AND FIGURE IT OUT TOGETHER.

THE NATIONAL COALITION FOR MEN, WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN THE 1970S,

HAS A LONG HISTORY OF WHAT IS KNOWN AS MEN'S RIGHTS ACTIVISM.

ONE OF THE GROUPS CHAPTERS PUBLISH THE PHOTOS THE

NAMES OF WOMEN, WHILE CALLING THEM FALSE ACCUSERS.

THERE, IF IT TURNS OUT THE WHOLE THING WAS ADJUDICATED AND THEY

WENT TO COURT AND IT WAS SHOWN THAT THEY ARE IN FACT FALSE

ACCUSERS, OKAY, I'M MORE WORRIED ABOUT THE GUYS WHO WERE

FALSELY ACCUSED AND YOU WANT TO HAVE SOME PROTECTIONS FOR

THEM, THAT IS GREAT.

BUT PUBLISHING THE PICTURES OF THOSE WOMEN, I DON'T KNOW

HOW NECESSARY IT IS OR HOW HELPFUL IT IS, BUT YOU

COULD MAKE A CASE FOR IT.

I WOULDN'T DO IT, IT'S NOT A CLOSE CASE FOR ME, BUT IF

YOU ARE IN A GROUP, I GUESS I GET IT.

BUT DID YOU REALLY MAKE SURE THIS ROLE ADJUDICATED, OR DID

YOU START PUTTING UP PICTURES OF WOMEN WHO HAD RAPE ACCUSATIONS,

SOME OF WHICH MIGHT'VE BEEN TRUE AND THEN YOU PUT THEIR PICTURE

UP AS FALSE ACCUSERS.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO GO DOWN THAT ROAD, WHICH I WOULD NEVER

GO DOWN BECAUSE I THINK IT IS A DANGEROUS AND BAD IDEA, YOU

BETTER MAKE SURE THAT YOU COME CORRECT AND ARE YOU SURE

THAT THE NATIONAL COALITION FOR MEN HAS MADE ABSOLUTELY

SURE THAT ALL THESE CASES ARE ADJUDICATED?

LET ME ASSURE YOU THAT I AM NOT POSITIVE ABOUT THAT.

THE MEN'S RIGHTS MOVEMENT, I AM A MAN, SO WHY WOULD I BE

AGAINST MEN'S RIGHTS?

I'M NOT, NOBODY IS.

MEN ALREADY HAVE A LOT OF RIGHTS.

THE WAY THAT IT WORKED WAS WE HAD ALL THE RIGHTS IN THE

BEGINNING, AND THEN EVENTUALLY, IT SPREAD OUT TO MORE

PEOPLE.

IN FACT, THERE WAS AS OF COURSE AS YOU KNOW PROPERTY

TO NON-PROPERTIED WHITE MEN AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON A

PEOPLE WHO GOT RIGHTS.

IT IS NOT LIKE MEN NEEDED SOMEONE TO PROTECTED THEM

BECAUSE OH MY GOSH, THEY HAVE BEEN DISCRIMINATED AGAINST

FOR SUCH A LONG TIME.

NOW THE PENDULUM SWUNG TOO FAR AND YOU COULD SHOW COUPLE

OF CASES, AND THIS DIVORCE PROCEEDING, YOU SEE HOW IT

IS NO LONGER EQUAL, OKAY.

THAT'S A GOOD CONVERSATION TO HAVE AN I'VE HAD THAT

CONVERSATION AND AS IT TURNS OUT, MEN'S RIGHTS GROUPS

DON'T REALLY START THEIR STOP THERE.

THE MORE YOU GET IN THE WEEDS, THE UGLIER HE GETS.

TALK ABOUT HOW WOMEN HAD THIS AND THAT COMING IN THEY

HAVE BEEN TAKING WHERE RIGHTS FOREVER.

TAKING LEGAL RIGHTS?

KNOW, YOU HAVE TO SHOW VERY SPECIFIC EXAMPLES,

OTHERWISE YOU ARE THE ONES WHO STARTED WITH ALL OF THE

RIGHTS IN THE FIRST PLACE, AND THAT INCLUDES ME.

JUST READ HISTORY, ANY HISTORY, BUT OBVIOUSLY, SOME PEOPLE

ARE NINE EMERALD WITH FACTS.

NOW IT'S GOOD TO SOME OF THE OTHER GROUPS.

IN 2012, THE GROUP, LET ME MAKE SURE THAT I HAVE THE RIGHT GROUP

HE OR, THIS IS REFERRING STILL TO THE NATIONAL COALITION

FOR MEN.

OKAY IN 2012, THE GROUP SUPPORTED THE REPUBLICAN

HOUSE VERSION OF THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT, WHICH

REMOVED PROTECTIONS FOR LB DBT Q PEOPLE IN CRISIS CENTERS

THAT THE GROUPS HAVE BEEN VERY WITH THE JUST WHEN IT NOTICES

ADVANCED SPECIFICALLY DESICCATED IS NEEDED IS FOR WOMEN'S.

IT'S WOMEN'S IT'S MEMBERS SUIT A STRIP CLUB LETTING WOMEN IN

FOR FREE DURING ITS LADIES NIGHT AND SAID A COMPANY CALLED

CHIC CEO FOR NOT LETTING MEN INTO A WOMEN'S NETWORKING EVENT.

I'M NOT SURE I WANT TO BUS INTO A WOMEN'S NETWORKING EVENT

BUT IF YOU THAT THE CEO OF THAT COMPANY AND ALL THE

EXECUTIVES WERE WOMEN AND MEN DID NOT HAVE A RIGHT, A

GOOD WAY TO ADVANCE AND ACCOMPANY AS WOMEN HAVE HAD

THAT PROBLEM IN MANY INDUSTRIES FOR A LONG TIME, BUT IT

HAPPENED IN THAT PARTICULAR CASE AND YOU WANT TO PURSUE

THAT, I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE TO PREVENT CASE IN COURT.

BUT NOW WE'RE GETTING INTO SUING STRIP CLUBS FOR LADIES NIGHTS?

I MEAN, MY CONSERVATIVE FRIENDS, WOULDN'T YOU CALL THAT A

SNOWFLAKE?

YOU WERE SO BOTHERED THAT YOU COULDN'T GET FREE NIGHT AT THE

STRIP CLUB AND THEY ONLY HAD IT FOR LADIES AND YOU'LL SEE THE

LOGIC IN THAT AND YOU SAY OH NO, I HAVE TO HAVE A QUALITY AT THE

STRIP CLUB THAT MEN HAVE NEVER HAD A QUALITY OF STRIP CLUBS.

WHEN YOU MAKE A CASE LIKE THAT IT MAKES EVERYONE THINK YOU ARE

A JACKASS THAT IT CERTAINLY MAKES ME THINK THAT AND I

SUSPECT A LARGE PERSON PORTION OF THE AUDIENCE BUT ACTUALLY THE

ONE THAT IS MOST HARMFUL IS GOING AFTER BG'S EQ RIGHTS DIVE

YOU ARE FOR MEN, WHY DO YOU CARE IF IT'S GAY OR STRAIGHT MEN?

I THOUGHT YOU WERE FOR EQUALITY BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN IT

LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE NOT SO YOU HAVE OTHER AGENDAS.

NOW WITH THE REALITY OF THE STATS HERE.

RESEARCHERS ESTIMATE THAT SOMEWHERE BETWEEN TWO AND

10% OF RAPE ALLEGATIONS ARE FALSE, BUT EVEN AMONG THOSE WERE

FALSELY ACCUSED, IT'S REPRIMANDS AND UP IN PRISON AS A RESULT.

THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT IF YOU ARE IN THAT 2 TO 10%,

THAT WHAT HAPPENED YOU IS AN OUTRAGEOUS.

IT IS.

BEING FALSELY ACCUSED OF RAPE IS A TERRIBLE THING, BUT IS

THAT AN OVERWHELMING PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED

AT THE SAME LEVEL AS ACTUAL RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT?

I WANT THE APPROPRIATE RESOURCES TO GO INTO BOTH PROBLEMS,

BUT APPROPRIATE ALSO MEANS PROPORTIONATE SO IF YOU

CALL THAT 50-50, THE STATS DON'T BACK IT UP.

IN FACT, LET ME GIVE YOU THE OTHER SIDE.

FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE FOUND RESPONSIBLE FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT,
