How to Make Money as a Filmmaker - Episode 1 - The Dirty Secret - Duration: 4:41.

I invited you guys here today and you have no idea what we're going to be

doing! One of the things that is in the back of my head that always bothers me

is the single least talked about thing in our industry. Making money. And I

think that that's like the dirty secret. We all talk about equipment, it's all

they talk about! Oh look at how good my picture looks and look at how good my

film looks and that really doesn't matter. When you make a project,

whether you're doing in the commercial space or you're doing a narrative piece,

it's really all about marketability. The second thing that I want to talk about

is this thing I call the five year plan because it's very important. So I think

that you get out of school and you've got five years to figure out a

way to make it in this industry. Because that's when life sets in. You have a

girlfriend, you get married, you maybe want to have a kid...this...that...the other

thing. So you've got to be careful that you're not wasting a lot of time

spending two years working on a feature that's not going to go anywhere. Jens

and I took a path where we tried to develop a system where we could make

some money in production and then have time to do other things. You hit it right

on the head with the five-year plan. The smart ones come out and say, okay you

know what, I have to learn this business, whether it be in wedding videos or

corporate videos, and they realize that they cannot come out of there and all of

a sudden be a star director or a producer. They have to go through

that learning process. And I think corporate films especially in today's

society is giving you a lot of latitude as far as storytelling is concerned.

You're seeing tons of opportunity to really craft a story in a lot of the

pieces that are being done that are very similar to creating a TV show or an

experience. You bring up a good point about learning the field because there's

a lot of people that come out [of school] like "I just want to be a DP" or "I just

want to be an editor" and stuff like that. I did some teaching at College of

DuPage and a lot of people were just focused on what they want to do. I'm

like, you know what, you need to learn everything! Because what if a

job is going to open up, it may not just be for DP, it might not

just be for an editor, so if you know audio, if you know how to shoot and edit...

... I'll take that further - what you're seeing out there right now is you see

people asking for "producers", but what they're asking for now is producers who

can shoot and edit. Yeah, it's a "predator!" It's a producer/director/editor.

You're 100% right. I mean, in our day you didn't do that.

I did not know how to work on an edit room that had $9 million

worth of equipment. There were seven people that it took to edit! There was a

craft system, like it's like it is in LA. But this predator concept is really

important because some of the jobs that I think are so hot right now you

need to be able to write a little story, shoot a little video, edit it -

that's a marketable person. I know you want that person! The graduates coming

out of school they can make money right away if they've thought about it or

somebody just clued them in a little bit to have a discipline in each one of

those categories. You could work for a small company like that and start

getting your feet wet in all those areas. Or they could start on their own.

We all started our own. But ok it's getting that

experience and then you can move into the bigger stuff. Well that's their

drawback! When someone comes in and says "I went to film school I already

know how to do it" the first thing you're going to do is say, "I don't want to go near that guy!"

The best one is this girl who calls me on the phone and says, "I want to work at

Zacuto in production." I'm like ok, what do you want to do? She goes, "I want

to be a director." And I'm like, what am I going to do?! What

have you directed? Well it's like you're starting at the top. I think that's one

of the things that's been the biggest challenge for a lot of companies

is that they think that now they can hire their "uncle/best friend"

because he's got a camera and he can come in here and do it. But isn't that

whole thing kind of like creating a monster? Obviously go thru the course and

learn everything, or in every department. but it's also kind of hurting us guys

that have been in the business for quite some time, because they're doing it for $500

we're asking for $2,000. That all goes back to who's paying for it! You got to blame the

film schools on this one. Yeah. There is a business of film schools.

In other words...their selling a dream...yeah, it's American Idol.

As Washington Park's rose garden turns 100, its longtime curator hangs up his shears - Duration: 3:05.

Only once have ever had this garden perfect.

Just once.

At least to my standards.

Other people think it's perfect all the time.

We came out here in 1984 to visit my brother-in-law for Christmas.

We left Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 25 below

landed here at 50 above. It was like the tropics.

And he brought us to the garden and I fell in love with this garden at that time.

And I told my family, "I'm gonna work here someday."

And they said, "Yeah right." But look what happened.

(Laughter).

Here, looks like this one could use some work.

In 1915, the big idea was to save the roses in Europe.

The war was going on. They had to grow food not roses.

So it was between Tacoma and San Francisco and Portland.

And in 1917, we got the official word that

this garden had been chosen then to be the official test garden.

So it's just evolved from that.

I started out with about 32,000-35,000 roses when I first started here

now we're at just under 11,000.

My other job is picking up garbage.

Takes about 100 people a month just to keep this garden dead-headed.

Volunteer: What am I supposed to to?

Harry: We'll just be doing some dead-heading.

And you have a bucket and I don't.

This is in good shape.

Aren't those arches gorgeous.

But it takes me and a volunteer two days to get those roses trained and trimmed in the winter.

And then retied. And we have 229 of them to do.

Our roses grow totally different here. Mostly because our nights are fairly cool

our days are generally not very hot and the winters are generally quite mild

This is one of the roses I was telling you about. It's from Germany, it's supposed to only be three-feet high.

And here, I mean, it's not done growing yet.

I'm always asked which rose is my favorite.

And my reply is, "It's like which child is your favorite?"

This is my favorite rose. One of my favorite roses.

This is Love and Peace.

I just fell in love with the way the whole thing grows. These nice green leaves.

It's straight and it's strong.

And out of 150 points I gave it a 147

only because it had no fragrance.

Otherwise, it would have been, for me, a perfect rose.

I am retiring, yep. That's gonna be really difficult.

I live and breathe this garden.

It's been my life nearly 30 years.

I probably will come back here and volunteer. But only sunny days.

You know, I'm here at 5:30 in the morning. I can be tired from the night before.

But I get here, and it just re-energizes me.

And I come back and just go for it.

Big Brother said: You thought you were being tested by the public, but in fact, there were only two viewers testing you. Immediately, there was speculation that it was Hannah and Dom.

They were then shown the pairs journey, including their fake eviction and entry to the attic where they spied on the houses antics.

Hannah said: Charlotte, I thought she was hypocritical for voting for me when she knew how it felt to take her mother out. While Tom said: Isabelle, as shes nominated me a few times and chose to evict me..

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool are more than happy to spend big this summer, but admits it isn't easy finding better players than he currently has.

It has been a frustrating summer at Anfield in many ways, with deals for key transfer targets Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita struggling to come to fruition.

This inability to get transfers over the line has been met negatively by many supporters, with owners FSG constantly accused of being unwilling to splash the cash.

Klopp has refuted these claims, however, saying he and club will always be happy to spend big on players that can improve the team.

"We are not afraid of big numbers at the club, we are not afraid to spend," Klopp told Goal on Tuesday. "But we have to do the right things, look at the right players and negotiate with the right clubs.

While many managers are perhaps more reckless in their spending, as we are seeing this summer, Klopp has always been one to approach transfers in a more measured fashion.

The boss admits it is not easy to find players superior to those already at his disposal – an opinion that is sure to irk those who feel the squad has too many mediocre individuals in it.

"There's two possibilities to strengthen the squad: one is to get better players, the other is to get players with similar quality to what you have," he added.

"It's difficult to get better players, because the ones we have are already really good.

If you get the same quality, then the age group that they're in means that very big steps are possible for everyone – the new players and the ones already at the club.

"That's what then gives the push in the performance, that's what we're looking for. The next few weeks could be pivotal in terms of Liverpool's season, with concern growing that they will miss out on their main targets.

To be willing to spend approximately £150million on Van Dijk and Keita does show ambition, but universal happiness will only come if both move to Anfield.

know like I have an alcohol problem that's my drug of choice but sometimes

when I used to drink I would indulge in an armed recreational drugs now drugs is

not my thing but sometime I you know I experienced um using drugs but my drug

of choice is alcohol like Charlie so we can relate I can understand how people

relapse relapse but as it stands I'm telling you right now and trying to say

he did go and I'm making that clear in every video for the next probably all up

today into tomorrow he he went in and he basically stayed for seven days so he

wasn't rehab he did go to the rehab he'd rather he'd have campaign why didn't say

I don't know we might never know Charlie too might never even get on and make

another YouTube video again because you know that wasn't his thing in the first

place that's what his brother did and he seen how well it was done for his

brother and he knew that his brother could help you know you know take him by

the hand and bring him to wait here brought him to a hundred thousand

subscribers and you know he had a relapse so he he fell a little bit now

charlie chill was to get back up here I'm a firm believer believe excuse me

there's a comment in the comment section of a youtuber that is on the same page

I had this subscriber friendly and I knew that it was a youtuber that looked

at my video so I said to her I knew that the person was from YouTube I've never

seen the president before but I said who's this person so I asked after I am

looked at their profile I said where do you know me from he said I watch your

videos I'm a fan of Charlie chill angry grandpa and kid behind the camera she

said to me the lady like together so she comes from the same

chronic family that Michael Greene and I'm Charlie challenge Hill aka um

Charlie a Greek come from dysfunctional and but if you look at her page she's

making money she's very successful online she's very articulate was she

talking to you and she just said to me but she moved me in for a hundred years

she said I can relate to those videos I enjoyed watching those videos because it

reminds me of my life growing up I was raised in an abusive household it wasn't

her father that was abusive it was her mother that was abusive so she said she

can relate but she enjoyed it in a crazy sort of a way even though people go to

things that are little rough in their childhood there's still some time

memories little memories that you can hold on to I still make it worth

remembering because they sue your family you know and you think you sooner still

forgive them and you still love them because of your feeling you love them

unconditionally but um she's basically saying that she came from a

dysfunctional home she's very aware of that these youtubers they have made a

fortune off of being dysfunctional that's how they became successful

because they use being a dysfunctional family and it's not acting that those

families are dysfunctional because of years and years of abuse I'm not going

to get into no allegations of no sexual abuse I don't know what went on in that

house but just abuse I mean this listen about angry grandpa talks now so imagine

when they were kids he swings he screams he has tantrums imagine has a kid going

through that all your life how do you expect someone to grow up normal but I'm

not making no excuses up for Charlie or for Mike because he's got issues too now

you can spit you can see it visually see that my dream has issues I've got issues

you know what I'm saying we all have our flaws but they have made Empire

offer they're dysfunctional me dysfunctional is they are a

dysfunctional family and the reason why I keep saying it over and over again is

you have to be careful who you mingle with on YouTube going back and forth

with these people that come out of nowhere that a crazed YouTube fans of

Charlie chill we're talking about not Michael Green right now but Charlie

chill because you have to save yourself just like this lady came to me and she

was honest but the reason why she's so passionate about those families in the

video channels and and being subscribers I'm a subscribe to the channels too but

the reason why she's so passionate is because she came from a place that they

came from there she came from a family that was treated her that way so I

always understand if you're trying to make it up here on YouTube because trust

and believe even if your intentions was never to make a youtube video and get

fake pay for it if you're up here long enough I'm seeing people like myself

starting from the bottom and then you start to see oh yeah I'm getting money

it's gonna make you wanna go and try it out it's just it that's something

positive stuff goes viral just like negative negativity goes viral and I'm

trying to save you you need to be be be with yourself you don't need to be on my

side you don't need to be on that I call them the troublemaker side on that you

know the groupies you know the arm catch me I'm outside groupies you don't want

to be on that side at all because I'm telling you they're up here spot and

mayhem and YouTube notices this and when you mingle with these people they do

foolish things like they hack your channel they wanted community strikes on

your channel they're doing all kind of habit it's gonna fall back on it because

YouTube knows what's going on trust and believe that's why man you see

me doing a disclaimer there's a reason why I'm doing a disclaimer I have talked

to on YouTube and I'm and I'm listening I'm taking off in all the information

that they tell me to protect myself but you got to stay away

from these Charlie killed crazed fans that want to leave these crazy comments

make these crazy videos then they want to properly write your your video but

then they were disagreeing when you originally uploaded the video that what

you were saying it wasn't the right information then you go to their channel

they got your video on their page as dysfunctional is dysfunctional and you

have to understand the reason why they act so like it's personal is because

they have issues themselves they probably come from broken homes they are

not right upstairs you know this is probably going on in videos right now

the stuff that you see on these videos angry grandpa screaming and yelling and

swearing and that's the way they live they're not happy with themselves but

they come up on here and cyberbully because they know that they can't do it

if they've seen you a person because it did cowards they don't they don't they

don't have it in them to do half of the nonsense or say half of the nonsense

that they say on these platforms they're showing out they don't have they don't

have the balls so I'll say that if they see you but the thing is is you can't

beat into it and I was getting something a couple of days ago

and I said to myself you're better than that I don't care what you've done any

arrest and he drugs anything you've done your life you still have more class than

what you're sitting up there arguing a tip that novella here's a way that you

can you can you can get back a letter person no get your point across there's

a way to do something is now what you do is how you do it you understand I'm

saying so you can still get a video across but don't don't don't feed into

it when you you go to the Purser's channel you expose their whole page now

you're promoting them and then you know then yet you know how many opposing who

they are you know giving them a reason to go do some stupid stuff on you

because it they're mad at themselves and not happy with their self have fun any

one of Charlie chills followers the majority have issues themselves they can

release just like this lady astwell on Facebook she knows she overcame she

wasn't she wasn't trying to act like a victim she took a negative situation

growing up and made it into a positive and she's on you not on YouTube she's on

the internet making money and she's probably doesn't even work

she probably stays at home and she's making enough money that is enough to

live off of she made she's successful heat at what

the her tragedies in a misfortune was and to doing something about it not

trying to act like a victim but don't want something about it stay away from

these people that are up here making these Charlie chill videos and they're

trying to make you think that it's the way in that's the only way that it is

you be on your side not their side you were raised we all raised for common

sense let those that supple go I had to let it go I had to say to myself even

when they come on my channel and leave racist stuff will say stuff out

accountant like like YouTube told me you have the choice you're in charge of your

channel you delete them because if you leave them climb instead you you're

looking for trouble because then you're gonna have other people read them

comments then they'll silent it's going to be a viral effect it's gonna get in

your channel gets you have no control over y'all your own channel that's how

your channel gets shut down I've worked too hard to let a bunch of groupies and

on catch me outside kids um tear them um and I'm just I'm just letting you guys

know that because a lot of these people that are making these videos just looked

at a video today I went to this girl's channel is he's still copyright in all

my videos he's literally uploading these videos

and people had given her thumbs up on my video but when they look at the original

video on my page they give me thumbs down in ignorant comments that's how you

know you know common sense the people though is not common sense because they

don't have most common sense so you can't make sense to someone that don't

make sense cuz they don't have no common sense if you if you can get what I'm

saying you can may call myself an essential someone and

don't have any common sense so that's why you just ignore and keep it moving

that's all I can tell you anyway from these people just deliberately trying to

keep you in the Charlie chill he's in rehab he's in rehab

we don't know where Charlie feels that but as far as it stands right now he

left that program and seven days and he's whenever he's at at this point that

also you know brings me back to some of my corners elbow on my page and I and I

read the comments on this is explain why his settings on his Facebook page 15 it

explains why he was able to you know answer my message on private messages it

all makes sense now listen knew something wasn't right it

wasn't in novi and I believe that he went but he didn't stay it was to me I

want it's it's what I think is best for my

viewers and my subscribers if you don't want to look at my video stay off my

channels how I look at I was looking to I'm yesterday it was a little kid she

was up and rising on the trending I seen thumbs down a little kids video I said

to myself

a people with with problems somebody then they have issues that they don't

love themselves if you don't love yourself how you gonna love me respect

anybody else cuz respect your love stops with yourself first if you don't know

how to love yourself and respect yourself how you gonna love what but

spent anyone around you or in the YouTube community I'm telling you right

now stay away from these people and I just want to do some shout outs there's

Slayer 73 you're a stand-up that I hope that whatever you do his father's making

videos that just successful too I had ran across something some young

blonde girl she's kind of got fresh with me with her mouth you asked her a

question about what she friends with the 8 K a groupie and she basically was very

rude to you and I respect you as a man that you didn't reply in an ignorant way

because then you would have been no better than her so I want to say dragon

slayer 773 shout out to you as well and there's another part is a whole bunch of
