- This month on What's New on EDU!
(upbeat music)
- [Voiceover] And three, two..
- [Ari] Hello and welcome to another edition of
What's New in EDU.
If you want to learn abut all the latest updates
coming from Microsoft Education,
then you came to the right spot.
- Today we're going to talk all about
Teams, Forms, and OneNote,
plus we'll highlight a new,
affordable device for the classroom
that we think students and teachers are
absolutely gonna love.
- So let's start with Microsoft Teams
in Office 365 for Education.
Our team is excited about Teams,
and it's now available
with built-in education experiences.
We had the chance to speak to Kelly
from Omaha Public Schools,
with Teams,
and this is what she had to say.
- Here in Omaha Public Schools,
we've been using Microsoft Teams for the past few months,
and teachers are really excited about the
transformation that it can make in teaching and learning.
We've realized that our students today
are more social than they've ever been,
and as we prepare them for that future environment,
digital citizenship and literacy
really come to the forefront.
With technology in our classroom,
we can develop skill in critical thinking,
in creativity, collaboration,
and, of course, communication.
So thank you for listening to educators like us
and making Teams such a powerful tool for transformation
in and out of the classroom.
- Like Kelly, schools are seeing the benefits
of Microsoft Teams.
- We're rolling out new features across 181 markets,
and in 25 different languages.
And Rana, the Teams product manager,
has the details on how Microsoft Teams saves time
and simplifies everyday logistics
with Office 365.
- So we've introduced new updates in Microsoft Teams
that saves educators time
and helps simplify the everyday logistics
so they can focus on creating a more connected
and collaborative classroom experience.
These Teams updates in Office 365 for Education include:
Integration with school datasync
which automatically populates classes with student rosters
connected to the school information system.
OneNote class notebooks are also built into every class,
so teachers can organize interactive lessons
and deliver personalized learning right within Teams.
Apps also integrate directly into the Teams experience
so teachers can keep everything their class needs
right at their fingertips.
They can quickly access
the Office 365 apps they know and love,
like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Planner, and so much more,
and customize their classroom with education apps
from partners like Busuu and Flipgrid.
And now, with end-to-end assignments management in Teams,
teachers can move effortlessly and quickly
from assignments creation and distribution
to grading and feedback in a snap.
Back to you, Ari.
- [Ari] Thanks, Rana.
Now, based on your feedback,
we're aware of how important
formative assessment and surveys are in the classroom.
That's why the Microsoft Forms team has been
hard at work on a few key improvements.
First, Excel surveys will now be powered by Microsoft Forms
and will be renamed "Forms for Excel".
This update comes with a modern experience
to make it simple and easy to collect information
in Excel in real time,
and all the Microsoft Forms features are just built in.
Second, teachers may notice the new
grading functionality in quizzes,
such as defining the correct answer
to a short-answer text question, and seeing,
students seeing immediate feedback
once they submit the quiz.
Third, you wanted us to enable Forms connectors
inside of Microsoft Flow,
so now users can connect Forms with other apps
to enable new workflow scenarios thorough Flow,
like setting an email notification through Outlook
for the new responses.
Fourth, and this is really one of the
most popular requests we've introduced,
and it's a new question type called ranking questions.
Users can define a rank or order of the question
and the responses will be aggregated and visualized
for form designers to easily understand.
Fifth, and finally,
we are always focused on making product experiences
that are better for all students,
and so that's why the Forms team has
improved Forms accessibility to help users with
vision, mobility, cognitive impairments.
Anyone with an Office 365 for Education account
can go to forms.office.com today
to create their first form
and provide feedback to the Forms team.
- So the plan is to highlight a new device every so often
here on What's New in EDU,
so here's this month's spotlight device,
the Dell Latitude 3189.
The 350 degree display lets you interact how you want,
either using the keyboard or touchscreen,
or with the Dell Active Pen.
This is one of the cool features,
it's got the front-facing camera,
but also has a world-facing camera right here
so you can make use of certain apps
just like you can on a smartphone.
It's got Gorilla Glass, which means tough,
and it's anti-microbial, which means clean,
and parents are going to thank you for that.
It is well-protected with military-grade
rubberized trim to absorb shocks.
Other things you should know about this device:
Four gigabytes of memory,
64 gigabytes of storage,
up to 10 hours of battery life,
an 11.6 inch high-def display,
this is one of several devices
that'll be coming soon with Windows 10S,
and we have a great selection of affordable devices
from all our OEM partners,
with prices that start at $189, or $279 with Ink.
We're going to highlight a different one each month or so.
Or you can just go to microsoft.com/education
right now and browse them all.
There are some cool new education features
coming from our OneNote team.
The first one I want to highlight
is the ability to solve and graph equations.
You can either type them in or Ink the equation,
which is pretty cool.
You can drag and drop the solution or the steps
straight onto the page.
This is a feature teachers have asked for
and can save them a ton of time.
OneNote now solves for systems of equations,
again either Inked or typed,
and for non-math teachers and students,
Researcher is a feature that we took from Word,
which makes it easy for you to research your essay topic,
create outlines, and add sources,
all without leaving your OneNote page.
(vocal trumpet)
- And don't forget about stickers!
- Right, Ari, thanks!
Never forget about the stickers.
People love their stickers.
It's one of the most popular features
we've added to OneNote.
Now, we've seen teachers use and customize stickers
in lots of fun and creative ways,
and we've just launched two new sticker packs:
Silly Supplies and Cacti Friends.
- Finally, there is a big event at the end of June
with ISTE 2017 and Hack the Classroom.
We invited global educators and Microsoft Innovative Experts
like Stony Evans, to that event.
Let's hear from Stony.
- Hi Ari.
If I had to describe this event in two words,
it would be: overwhelmingly awesome.
As a high school teacher-librarian working in Arkansas
and a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert,
I'm always striving to learn new things
for the learning community I serve.
This conference provided prime opportunities
and I want to share it with everyone.
So follow this link and take a look at the top 10
great education tools I got to know at ISTE 2017.
Back to you, Ari.
- And lastly, we have two online events coming up.
The first is a TweetMeet happening
on August 15th on Microsoft Teams,
and the second is an "Office Hours" live event
on August 16th.
In both events, we want your questions,
and we want to support you in getting your classroom
set up for this back to school season.
So be sure to share
what you would like more help on in these events
in our form embedded in the Microsoft Education blog post.
- That's it for us here,
thanks for joining us on this month's What's New in EDU.
Check out our blog for more details
and links to everything you heard here,
and share this episode with your fellow
educators and administrators.
We like to let students wrap it up for us.
Tweet us if you want your students to help us out
on our next edition of What's New in EDU.
- See you next time!
