Welcome to ESL Garage where we give you tools to fine tune your American English skills.
The indefinite article is "a" or "an."
But when do you use "a" and when do you use "an?"
Well, how you decide is kind of like how you choose to pronounce [thuh]
or [thee].
The rule is really very simple.
It depends on the sound at the start of the following word.
Remember, what we say matters, not what we write.
It is the sound that matters, not the letter used in writing a word.
I will explain this more after we've learned the rule.
Let's begin!
If the following word starts with a consonant sound, then we say "a."
For example, if the following word has a "b" sound at the beginning, like "broke," a consonant,
then we use "a."
If the following word starts with a vowel sound, then we say "an."
For example, if the following word has a vowel sound at the beginning, like "i" as in "issue," then
we use "an."
Do you remember what I said at the beginning of the lesson?
It is very important to understand that what we say matters, not what we write.
Normally, we pronounce consonant letters with a consonant sound, and vowel letters with
a vowel sound.
But there are some exceptions.
The rule about a /eɪ/ or an /æn/ is still the same.
You just need to think about the sound, not the writing.
For example, if the following word is "honest" as in "honest mistake," would you use
"a" or "an?"
You would use "an."
Why?
Because although it's written with the consonant "h," it's said with a vowel sound, "o."
To review, we use a long "an" before a vowel sound, not necessarily before a vowel.
And we use "a" before a consonant sound, not necessarily a consonant.
Now for some practice fun!
I'll say a word you tell me if it's "a" or "an." Are you ready?
